Update: GLAAD has issued yet ANOTHER statement. The latest is in response to the news that Adam is booked for an appearance and performance on The View December 10. GLAAD says:

“ABC has taken a step towards fairness by inviting Adam Lambert to perform on The View. GLAAD has been advocating against the double standards that have been applied to Lambert as an openly gay performer. We thank community members and allies for voicing their concerns with ABC so that entertainers like Adam have the opportunity to be broadcast into living rooms across America.”

According to a tweet from Adam, he’ll appear on The View Thursday, December 10. The appearance, which will feature an interview and performance, will be pre-taped, due to a scheduling conflict (per Adam’s peeps). GLAAD is taking credit? I think Barbara Walters waved her big stick and got her way. via LA Times

Jarrett Barrios, GLAAD president, explains to the LA Times why the organization felt the need to keep clarifying their stance, and I have to say, I’m still left confused.   He claims the first statement was taken out of context. But that first, wishy washy statement had no criticism of ABC in it whatsoever. When GLAAD   got some heat, they ramped up the rhetoric, once and then twice.   via LA Times

GLAAD has released yet another statement on the Adam Lambert controversy, and it’s a complete turnaround from the first two statements they released yesterday.

Today’s statement:

‘We appreciate ABC’s commitment to gay and transgender inclusion in other programming,’ said Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. ‘However, let us be clear that GLAAD remains steadfast in our assertion that Adam Lambert is being subjected to a double standard by ABC as an openly gay performer. We do not support ABC cancelling Adam Lambert’s past and future performances. We urge the community to reach out to ABC and express their concerns that Adam Lambert is being subjected to a double standard.’

Queerty has a pretty scathing critique of the way GLAAD handled the Adam controversy HERE, with quotes from GLAAD’s ever-changing prior statements on the controversy.

GLAAD must have gotten their asses kicked to have turned around so completely on the matter in such a short period of time…

Well, ha. Internal pressure? Either way, somebody wasn’t happy with the complacent answer. I’m not surprised; this whole thing is pretty high-profile for such a half-hearted stance. But no matter what now, they’re going to look pretty stupid.

  • larchcat

Wow, they sound like such boneheads. Get it together GLAAD! ALthough I am happy they have revised their statements . . .

Lose/lose, GLAAD. Too little, too late, me thinks. (Although, compared to ABC, these guys look like saints. OTOH, they should have been right out there with their support for Adam, and they just caved under pressure.)

  • Gigi3

My head is spinning trying to keep up with their position. However, I’m delighted that they are sounding more supportive of Adam and less like corporate lap dogs.

  • melirose89

GLAAD is looking like a bunch of morons right now! Make up your minds! Which one is it? As per yesterday’s statement, if they wanted a clarification to “caught of guard” they should’ve discussed that in their first so called lengthy discussion before issuing the first statement supporting ABC. Now they’re completely turning everything around? Give me a damn break! they’re hurting the gay community because now it looks like any network can take advantage of gay artists, and they’ll get full support of the organization that’s supposed to defend gay people. It also gives the haters more ammunition to attack gay people.

But then again I shouldn’t be surprised by such stupid reactions, considering, as the article states, ABC is a sponsor of GLAAD. Money talks! They’ll throw their own under a bus quick if it means more money in their pockets.

The only person looking good right now is Adam because he’s taking everything in stride while these idiots make fools out of themselves whether it’s ABC, GLAAD, the FCC or CBS after defining the very double standard Adam was talking about.

This is total bullshit’ ¦.I just emailed and urge you to do also, the guy above from GLAAD demanding GLAAD release a press statement stating why they turned there back on Adam yesterday, throwing him under the bus, and making him look unsupported by the gay community..Such a load of crap..!

  • weese

The most important thing that came from Adam’s AMA performance was the exposure of a double standard. The next was GLAAD’s lack of support for one of their own. ABC, the FCC, GlAAD, the entertainment industry must now really look at themselves, what they stand for, and rewrite their rules. Thank you Adam Lambert–we have to know problems exist before they can be made right. Now we know. We can exert pressure to help bring about change.

  • hwc

They threw him under the bus because ABC is a corporate sponsor of GLAAD, i.e. ABC bought and paid for the little doggie in the window to be its pet.

  • oceana

I don’t think there was a double standard and don’t think it was due to Adam being gay that it all happened. I think that’s why GLAAD was kind of torn in their decision making. Perhaps they ultimately caved in to political correctness. I think there’s been a lot of knee-jerk reaction to buzz words in this matter. LOL I sound like a conservative and I’m far from it, really. Just how I see it.

  • alaadam

I emailed the guy from glad too. Friday night news dumps get lost in the shuffle. THey know that! So what are they going to do besides issue a late night statement to satisfy their constituents?

Lose/lose, GLAAD. Too little, too late, me thinks. (Although, compared to ABC, these guys look like saints. OTOH, they should have been right out there with their support for Adam, and they just caved under pressure.)

Agree. I wonder though if GLAAD might have been responding to mixed messages from ABC. If ABC was telling GLAAD that this was all about a personal dispute with Adam, maybe GLAAD decided to back off. Then perhaps they saw through ABC’s claim and GLAAD decided they better stand behind their own. The quickest way to have gotten answers would have been for GLAAD to say this looks like discrimination and until ABC is willing to explain exactly why they are banning Adam from their network, that’s what it should be called. Adam has been queried and queried about his actions. When is ABC going to be held accountable for their actions?

Who cares what GLAAD thinks anyway? These groups sit in their cushy offices and grace us with their comments about who should get a wrist slap and who shouldn’t. Whatever. The reason ABC canceled Adam’s appearances is because he veered way off his rehearsals, they have every right to be angry if Lambert strayed, that is the way TV, especially live TV works. Adam has handled it with grace and dignity, he got carried away, I buy that completely. He took responsibility for it and it’s done. However, it’s their network, and ABC has every right to put on or take off whomever they feel like.

Despite GLAAD’s shifting positions to victimize somebody, there isn’t one here. Sorry to disappoint them.

  • will

Oy vey. This new statement had to be issued because of the horribly worded and confusing one they sent out yesterday that, for some unfathomable reason, said GLAAD was satisified that the same-sex kiss didn’t factor into ABC’s blackballing of Adam, when nobody ever said that had anything to do with it. That then resulted in the completely wrongheaded story by the idiots at TMZ that GLAAD was actually supporting the cancellations, when GLAAD’s statement said nothing of the sort. It’s all just a perfect storm of miscommunication and incompetence.

But I have to admit it’s pretty entertaining. I thought I was done with this whole mess, but now I’m getting some fresh popcorn. Adam must be laughing his ass off.

Either they actually got new information just yesterday or they realized that this was a bigger controversy than they’d first thought and they should be on the right side of it for publicity reasons. They probably didn’t like the press interpreting their statement as “GLAAD backs ABC.” Either way…this is random! And it makes GLAAD look majorly bipolar and/or indecisive, which can’t be good for its image. But I’m still happy they got their shit together and released this statement.

My biggest hope is that Adam Lambert just goes away for good. What a train wreck he is. Frankly, I think Lambert has just set back the gay community 10 years. Where gays were featured more on TV, it was always respectful, & nothing that made me spill out the contents of my stomach. Being gay does not mean you have to be vulgar. I am sick to death of the “Britney/Madonna…blah blah doing stuff on TV. I didn’t like it either. He should never be the poster boy for gays that’s for sure. Even if he was not gay, I still think what he did was disgusting.

The one positive thing about this is that Adam doesn’t have the title “American Idol” because that he is not. I think he’s hurt the franchise itself with their blatent support of him – but then they didn’t know what he was capable of did they? He fooled them good. I knew this was going to happen when I saw some of his picture off his website after that information hit the internet and felt that sooner or later the true Lambert would rise to the surface. Well, that “No Boundaries” song was prophetic. What a sleeze bag & now Lambert, who didn’t want his “gayness” to be what he is all about – lands up that is what it really is about. What he did wasn’t artistic to anyone’s standard. It was just vulgar. In addition, I’m not into the sex slave thing, so I guess I’m old fashioned.

I think gay people have just as much right to be disrespectful and vulgar as straight people. No one is saying Adam’s AMA performance was tasteful. But he too has the right to turn people off just as much as Eminem, Janet Jackson and Rhianna. Seriously, I don’t like any pda, whether straight, gay or with a puppy so I can’t really differentiate between the OTT AMA acts in regards to the taste-o-meter.

It will make no impact on the general public, who will still think GLAAD sided with ABC. All of Adam’s fans will cheer and feel good, as they think they had a small victory. But, Adam will not be on NYRE and won’t be on Jimmy Kimmel for months. All that happened is the tone of the emails hitting GLAAD will go from enraged to thankful. I really wonder how many outraged fans of Lambert’s are truly concerned about the gay community (or just about Adam), or are even involved in any rallies/events/fundraisers for them?

Maybe if you fans/activists put some of that energy into really campaigning for the gay community where it counts, ie gay marriage for example, you could really do some good.

I’ve seen the “open letter” of outrage that is being posted all over the internet for everyone to sign.

Was it sent to GLAAD yesterday?
    Yes.

Now, I have no idea if the author is involved with the gay community proactively, but it seems as though the majority of fans involved in this could give a hoot about the LGBT community as a whole. Is this really about gay rights, or is it another excuse to drum up more unmerited sympathy/media promo for Lambert? If this is true, I find it not good @ all.

Interesting results from that Access Hollywood poll. 82% said ABC went overboard in cancelling Adam from Jimmy Kimmel and only 18% agreed with the decision.

Folks here in the bubble may be oversaturated with Adam news but in the outside world, judging by the articles in the media and the results of polls like this one, the tide has definitely turned in Adam’s favor. His recent comments have been understanding of ABC’s position or at least neutral towards them, and the network has retaliated with more cancellations.

It’s gotten to the point where people will remember the retaliation more than they will remember the incident that triggered it.

While on some level I agree with you but I also think that for every person who maybe doing this just for Adam, there are just as many doing it because of the double standard. I know that is me. I did not like his performance (except the beginning of the number and the last vocal run which was off the hook) If there was outrage at him and say Janet, Eminem, and Rhianna and all of them where called out for explicitly crude behavior I would be first in line to agree. I don’t like the double standard. Though he did have a vulgar performance why is his consider more vulgar or the only one inappropriate for children and he went on the latest.

I also think that if some people are not doing this exclusively for the LBGT community that does not matter a double standard was evident and in the long run the outrage will help the cause. IMHO

Third thought: Damn, that Barbara Walters has clout! I have to believe she’s been pushing her network to make nice.

    THIS! :)

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

I bow down to Babs if The View really does go down and Adam PERFORMS!

  • zzatrms

adamlambert Hey friends! I will be performing and hanging w the ladies of ABC’s The View Thursday the 10th!

and LKL that night… busy day for Adam.

  • Chicagolaw

Well, all heck will break loose now, lol! Adam on The View. Gotta love Barbara Walters. But, shoot, they have only talked about him EVERY day since the AMAs, having him on is the least they can do.

  • PattyH

I really wonder how many outraged fans of Lambert’s are truly concerned about the gay community

Probably more than you think. :)

  • zzatrms

I can’t wait to see what elizabeth has to say.

  • LaurelG

Hmmm if indeed he is going on the VIew then he must not be performing otherwise all of ABC’s recent cancellations will not make any sense. Unless Barbara Walters does indeed run ABC as I surmised all along

Oh, he’ll perform. I doubt he signed a contract with a Lambert clause, but I’d bet he gave Barbara his word and she’s fine with that.

  • bridgeymah

I really wonder how many outraged fans of Lambert’s are truly concerned about the gay community

I for one have many gay friend and have supported them for years, attended fundraisers, marched in parades and danced the night away at gay clubs, laughed, played and celebrated with them and cried with them. There are many kinds of support and concern. You don’t have to be at the barricades… just sayin.

  • Truthiness

I really wonder how many outraged fans of Lambert’s are truly concerned about the gay community

I can only speak for myself, but I was volunteering with my community’s AIDS Foundation while Adam was still in short pants.

Yay! the only thing more fun than proving one’s fandom is proving how committed one is to gay rights. Huzzah! Suffice it to say, yes, I’ve been actively involved in one way or another since I was in high school. Then it was giving more of my time, and now it’s more my money/organized political actions.

My Adam standom is a recent thing, my commitment to social issues was something I was literally raised with and is an intrinsic part of who I am.

Anyhew, can’t wait to see Elizabeth and Adam. Okay, I’m rooting for some Scanners level action going on there. So barring that, I would like to see Adam and Whoopi and Adam and Joy.

  • karenw

When Boy George first hit it big with Culture Club, was he openly gay?

not openly .. I recall that he was very non commital and kind of avoided the question .. often implying that he wasn’t interested in sex (the cup of tea quote) .. or that he was bisexual. .. I can just remember growing up with his music and it being blatantly obvious to me.

  • dhunken

Oh, I think he’ll perform. I doubt he signed a contract with a Lambert clause, but I’d bet he gave Barbara his word and she’s fine with it.

Well I am sure he is as that is what he said in the tweet. I am more interested in the Hanging with the ladies. That may mean he maybe the special guest host. (like Kate Goslin was) (Wonder if he will have Kate hair that day J/K) Which will mean he will be on the whole time. OMG

adamlambert Hey friends! I will be performing and hanging w the ladies of ABC’s The View Thursday the 10th!

And GLAAD issued another statement…They are sure busy these couple days :)

[Updated: 6:41 p.m. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which in the last two days has issued three statements regarding its position on this issue has now issued a statement from its president, Jarrett Barrios: "ABC has taken a step towards fairness by inviting Adam Lambert to perform on The View." GLAAD has been advocating against the double standards that have been applied to Lambert as an openly gay performer. We thank community members and allies for voicing their concerns with ABC so that entertainers like Adam have the opportunity to be broadcast into living rooms across America."]

I think doing The View has everything to do with Barbara Walters.

  • iluvai

He’s gonna sang on daytime TV????? Lock up the kiddies!

    Lock them up indeed! :)

Mine won’t be home, but I will let them see the video on MJ’s. My 9 year old has almost memorized the lyrics from Adam’s album. I kid you not.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/12/adam-lambert-to-appear-on-the-view-next-thursday.html
ABC declined to comment about the decision but sent out a release confirming that Lambert will appear on Thursday’s show.

Lambert will be interviewed by “The View” hosts and will perform. Both will be pre-taped because Lambert has a scheduling conflict and cannot be in New York on Thursday, sources said.

  • PattyH

Was wondering how he was going to do, Larry King and the View on the same day.

I really wonder how many outraged fans of Lambert’s are truly concerned about the gay community

Depends what you mean by concerned. I am not an activist. For anything. And I am unlikely to be emailing ABC about this. But I offer both my opinion and knowledge freely in conversations. I have patiently explained my stance for gay marriage, what the letters LGBTQ mean and a bit about history and discrimination. My feeling is that if we all do our part and are friendly and talk and share knowledge, progress will follow one person at a time. If I achieve nothing but putting a chink in someones prejudice, I figure it’s progress. So, yes, I’m concerned, but only in the way I’m concerned about all people and all forms of discrimination in America.

ABC mission: commence backtracking (Yay Barbara Walters!)

this is all good, and if he makes nice to the ladies (which he will), there will be more appearances on ABC

and WWFM single will be with us for a while (think how long it took Lady Gaga’s singles to work their way up the charts- new artists don’t just jump to the top)

    jms,

    Am I being too cynical?

Yup, I believe you are. Barbara is the executive producer of this show. Why would she have him on, knowing that the ratings will be sky high, and then make him look bad? Makes no sense.

Adam was politely not interested in talking about the AMA thing in San Diego, so it will be interesting to see what they do talk about. I know it will come up, of course, but can I hope that they will discuss the album, even if it is in vain??

  • Truthiness

I find it interesting that ABC in their statement make it clear that it is being taped but that is because of a Adam Scheduling conflict so no one misinterprets it as they don’t trust him.

So fascinating that they acknowledge the taping and give an excuse for it.

lol he’s not the only one. to whoever pointed out that babs is executive producer, thank you. Now I can look forward to Adam taking apart Hasselhof’s “logic” while simultaneously seducing her to his side…she’s sure to undergo spontaneous human combustion.

  • Truthiness

This almost seems Kabuki on ABC’s part at this point.

How playing both sides against the middle.

Try and placate the Conservative groups who were going to go after you for Adam’s AMA performance no matter what. Cancel his GMA performance! (when even the PTC said it was going too far and dude, those people are nuts). And even after perfectly safe and fine peformances on CBS and the Ellen show, cancel taped and/or late night performances on Kimmel and NYE.

Then after getting flack from the Left as well, then allow Babs to have Adam on her show and then during the day.

Lots of placating and power plays all around, I feel.

    Very interesting.

  • KLI

I’m putting money on the table right now that Adam kisses at least one of them on the hand and then they all beg for him to kiss their hand.

I’m thinking the 10th is when it will be recorded to be aired on another date. It’s obvious that it hasn’t been pre-recorded yet from the way they are talking on the View and on Joy’s show.

For the pre-recording to be shown on the 10th, when would he pre-record? He’s performing for Spielberg on the 9th in CA. It’s already the weekend. So he’d have to come to NYC Mon or Tues, fly back for Spielberg, and then back to NYC for Jingle Balls. Makes no sense. He’s prob recording on the 10th to be shown at a later date.

Really, I thought it would take at least a few more weeks or even months, the way ABC was acting before we’d see him on that network again. • student_Inlove

This is my first time writing in this blog. I wan to apologize in advance for any English grammar mistake. I would like to introduce myself. I am a PhD student, focused always in my studies and research. However, since I watched Adam Lambert in AI8, something changed in my daily life. I have not been a fan of anybody, I have never read blogs, and I have never followed any singer. Now I read everyday this blog, I Google Adam everyday, I got his CD, and some magazines with his photography. My husband sometime makes jokes about my obsession with Adam, but he also loves his voice and music.

The AMAs performance was Ok for me, but his vocals was my main concern because he is a spectacular singer. My husband did not like his AMAs performance, but our preoccupation was the negative opinion about his OTT the next day.

In our opinion nobody else can sing better than Adam Lambert. There are some good singers out there, but nobody can top Adam with his amazing vocals.

I am very happy to be alive and be a part in some way with the birth of a star of music. My dream is to travel to USA to enjoy a concert by Adam Lambert and live many years listening to his music.

  • Cookiebr7

WTF? ABC, you are not off the hook! I want to see Glamgod rescheduled on Kimmel and NYRE. I also want to see him on Oprah, who did ask him back when the album was to come out. Then I will assume everything is okay.

And is it just me, or did anyone else watch the Realite interviews with M. Slezak, the final one in particular? M said to him, “Don’t worry, you will be on The View before long.” And Adam said that he and BW had already discussed when it would be. Did you happen to see the expression on Adam’s face? Priceless!

With the time change, from East to Pacific, it’s entirely possible to tape The View in the morning and do the Spielberg honor that night. However, isn’t Adam also free on the 8th to tape The View?

That’s been my whole problem with this mess right along. ABC could have avoided this if they had bleeped/blurred it out. Why didn’t they. I have no answer for that.

  • dhunken

Maybe since Barbara Walters The Queen Bee of ABC got Adam to be on her show. The Empress of the Universe Oprah will get him on her show.

  • PattyH

During the tour, he flew back to LA just for the Details photo shoot.

Heck, he performed at the Ford event, in Detroit in Sept., and flew back in time for the P!NK concert at Staples that same night. :)

The only day left to pre-record is Mon, 8th. And that would mean NY/LA/NY in 4 days. Doesn’t make sense.

But he’s hosting that pop thing on Monday

I am sure they want him on The View to air Thursday. This makes the most sense since he will have just been on the Barbara Walters Special the night before.

I think the pop NewNowNext thing on Logo was taped while Adam was in NY, so it’s airing on Monday. He’s wearing the blue plaid shirt in the promos.

Totally makes sense for Adam to be on the View – they’ve been obsessing about him.

I am sure the PopLab thingy has been taped already like when Kris and Adam did Ryan Seacrest’s show.

There’s a chick on Twitter that has no idea what she is talking about. I think she was the one to spread the rumor that Adam was no longer going to be part of the Kris/Adam/Allison concert with Ryan (the one where we vote on the city).

Now she is saying that ABC owns FOX. Yikes. Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch. She previously said that Jive and RCA were the same company.

Lesson: (as if we already didn’t know this) be careful what you believe on Twitter.

  • will

I find it interesting that ABC in their statement make it clear that it is being taped but that is because of a Adam Scheduling conflict so no one misinterprets it as they don’t trust him.

Did ABC make a statement about The View being pre-taped? It was unnamed “sources” who talked about a scheduling conflict, according to the L.A. Times, and “Adam’s peeps.” according to MJ. Actually, I have yet to see the press release from ABC about this, even though one is mentioned in the Times. Is it posted somewhere?

Just put in for tickets on the 10th. Don’t know if that’s the taping date or the air date. Will definitely line up for standby as I doubt the tickets are easy to come by, especially on such short notice.

Since The View is normally live, and Adam’s pre-taped show airs on the 10th, I doubt there will be a show for you to attend on the 10th.

  • sidewalkstory

The singer sits down with the co-hosts Thursday, December 10. He’s been a Hot Topic since his controversial American Music Awards performance last month — now he’s taking a seat on the couch to answer questions from our co-hosts. The View will show a taped interview with the the American Idol runner-up and a performance.

Will it’s funny but I promise you that this is the exact same place I went to and read about the schedule conflict. Right after it says the show was taped it said it was because of a scheduling conflict by Adam. Strange that now they took that part out!

I don’t think it is that amazing that BW has Adam coming on The View. She wants her special to get awesome ratings. So it makes sense that she would lobby to get Adam on The View.

Except Dec. 10 is the day after her special airs, so there’s no promotional value for Barbara in having Adam on. It appears she’s doing it purely as a matter of principle. Weird as that may seem.

  • revcat

I wonder if they fly Adam first class? He’s gonna need to catch some zzzz’s on the plane ride(s)… well unless he flies coach I’ll never sit next to him. My husband and I sat next to LL Cool J once though and it was coach. His grandma had just passed away and it was the only flight he could find just before Christmas to get back to Queens. Perfect gentleman and serious eye candy to boot.

The whole ABC/Adam/The View gets curiouser and curiouser. Maybe they are getting ready to go on Christmas hiatus and for whatever reason wanted to rush him onto the show before their winter break??? Who knows, but Barbara evidentally got a bee up her bonnet. I just know she fell for him like every other interviewer, who could resist?

Now I’m totally confused. Is the 10th the airdate or the taping date? The ABC statement isn’t all that clear, but Adam’s tweet sure makes it sound like it airs on the 10th. And the Times says:

ABC declined to comment about the decision but sent out a release confirming that Lambert will appear on Thursday’s show.

I am starting to think that ABC and GLAAD worked this out together. Strange that First GLAAD does a 180 on the treatment of Adam by ABC. They encourage everyone to contact then. Then mere hours Later we find out that Adam is going to be on the view. Moments after that GLAAD issues another statement acknowledging ABC is taking a step towards in fairness by inviting Adam Lambert to perform on The View. Then GLAAD claims it has been advocating against the double standards that have been applied to Adam as an openly gay performer. They go on to thank the community and allies for voicing their concerns so that Adam can be broadcast into our living rooms.

As if a few hours of e-mail or phone calls solidified the ABC change of heart. The whole thing smells of pure BS. IMHO I am very glad that Adam is no longer “banned” from ABC but this is too contrived.

  • BM2587

She previously said that Jive and RCA were the same company.

Well technically they almost are. They’re considering merging RCA and Jive

I am starting to think that ABC and GLAAD worked this out together. Strange that First GLAAD does a 180 on the treatment of Adam by ABC. They encourage everyone to contact then. Then mere hours Later we find out that Adam is going to be on the view.

Most likely no. Adam was cut from programs airing on ABC Primetime. The View is part of ABC Daytime which operates under a whole different person

  • Bowie1

Arrived late to the thread to see Adam will be on The View and will perform. Ok! Guess Barbara rules at ABC. Let’s see…The View is on during the day and Jimmy Kimmel is on late night, right?! So now…Adam’s ok ‘performing’ during the ‘day’ but not at ‘night’? ABC makes no sense to me. Just glad Adam will be performing.

And GLAAD is now changing it’s tune on Adam. Well…I definitely do not need GLAAD to tell me there is a double standard in this country.

I went to dinner with a friend this evening at a neighborhood cafe and all of a sudden I hear WDYWFM playing! I was so excited to hear Adam’s music being played. It made my evening!

  • alaadam

Dhunken I agree about ABC and GLAAD working this out but I think ABC was fine when they thought GLAAD was taking them at their word and backing them. When things starting going downhill for GLAAD, they started backtracking to the point of calling on its members (thousands) to complain to ABC about the double standard. I think that is when ABC blinked. IT was about to explode in a bigger issue……way bigger.

  • mistyluv7

“Now she is saying that ABC owns FOX. Yikes. Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch. She previously said that Jive and RCA were the same company. ”

She is partly right. Jive and RCA are affliliated with 19……it’s 19/RCA and 19/Jive. Adam is signed under RCA…Kris is signed under Jive….they are both under 19.

ABC is a Disney Comapany….that’s another reason for all the flack.

  • alaadam

NO! Remember Adam was first cut from daytime-GMA! Primetime came a week later.

  • dhunken

Most likely no. Adam was cut from programs airing on ABC Primetime

GMA is during the day. That is where he was canceled first and the original talk was he was canceled because his performance would not be appropriate for daytime. But I really don’t know was making more of an observation that it is all too neat and clean too quickly. I guess you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

I am very happy to be alive and be a part in some way with the birth of a star of music. My dream is to travel to USA to enjoy a concert by Adam Lambert and live many years listening to his music.

Awww – that is so sweet, and I feel the same way – except that I would travel abroad if I have to. I’ve seen Adam perform 4 times and most fun I’ve ever had (well maybe not so much at the AMA). And I met him which was almost as thrilling as hearing him sing. Welcome!

  • sidewalkstory

She previously said that Jive and RCA were the same company.

Well technically they almost are. They’re considering merging RCA and Jive

Technically, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. There is no “almost” in corporate structure. They are two separate corporations. They have a common parent, Sony. Until a merger, they are independent of each other and there are statutory consequences for acting as one corporation.

This woman not only said they were the same company, she called them divisions. She has no clue how a division is different than a corporation. She also called the parent company a “mother” company. hahaha, that was my first tip off.

And she was correcting people with this misinformation.

You weren’t confused when you tried to correct me.

sidewalkstory I hadn’t yet seen the ABC statement provided by dhunken when I made that post replying to yours. Both the Times and Adam’s tweet say pretty clearly that it airs on the 10th — why would Adam tweet that date if it’s not the air date? Then I saw that the ABC statement is indeed somewhat ambiguous, thus the source of my confusion.

“So you think that since they’re getting the bad press, they blinked? Valid.”

Thanks, hypertwink! I appreciate it. In no way do I think Adam has any power in this game. He needs TV more than they need him. However, the press has been so anti-ABC, that they might have had to take a second look. I’m not sure who they bowed down to in the first place. But, I don’t think it was the FCC (I seriously do not think any FCC complaint has merit.) I think it was either a powerful sponsor or someone at the top. And it was one of those publicity gambles that might have paid off. Except it didn’t. So, now, they are going to use Adam to get back in the public’s good graces.

Maybe this can be the official end of the ABC “story.” The View will def talk about the AMA performance on the 10th and ditto Larry King. Really hoping that ends the whole thing because that drags this story on one more full week.

By next weekend, I hope people are talking about something else dealing with Adam. I’m done talking about the politics but it doesn’t appear that publicity around this story is promoting sales.

WWFM isn’t going to really break out as a hit until after Xmas. So the timing of the whole AMA thing is really hurting. Or at least not helping
because FYE -the album seems headed for a major 2nd week drop. If the publicity was helping sales, it would have cushioned the drop somewhat.

  • Pixie Baker

I have resisted commenting on all this debacle with the AMA performance and aftermath but I just want to say this. Adam has more talent then I have seen in a very long time and I am so saddened that his music is being overshadowed by this controversy. I am so excited to hear his music and watch his fame grow but not in this way.

I have listened to Adam talk about his performance on AMA and I think I hear him loud and clear that he gets it….he understands where his judgment was wrong that night. In a way I am glad this lesson is learned early in his career and now I hope his music becomes the focal point. His performances after the debacle were amazing….loved, loved, loved his Ellen’s show….and his presentation perfection (loved his outfit, too!)

Adam seems like a real smart guy…he will pick the right performances for the venues and he will do well. I just hope *this* hiccup will be forgotten and his music and talent become the STORY!

  • PattyH

    Or at least not helping

I am in the camp that agrees with this. I think the AMA performance hurt sales. The first week was probably his fanbase and the AMAs did not pick up the new fans that an amazing vocal would have done. I’m OK, with FYE, the vocal just needed to be killer. Oh if only we had the video choreography instead!

  • larchcat

Geez – I just checked in. I don’t even know what thread is active right now. But having glanced back at the thread, there was some talk of entertainer support of Adam, which someone mentioned includes Rod Stewart, Melissa Etheridge, and Rosie O’ Donnell. I didn’t see any mention of Rob Halford, who has also been quoted in print saying very positive things about Adam. I don’t have the link, but its out there. To me, that is one of the best endorsements. As Halford is one of the original metal badasses, a phenomenal rock singer, and gay.

Yup. I agree. ABC needs to re-schedule Jimmy Kimmel and then let Adam do the NYE gig for me to think they’re trying to “make up”.

Agreed on it all. Which is why I was so pissed at Adam for the missed chances at the AMAs and his immediate interview didn’t help. Nor did I think the performances of WWFM help enough off-set those things, either on Letterman, Early Show or Ellen, or else that would have helped the album more.

It’s why I was hoping for things like the Kimmel show which would be all about the music, several songs of it, same for NYE. And not just this stuff because it is demonstrably not helping Adam’s music sales. I know it’s not Adam’s fault, per se, that ABC’s decisions have continued this drama, but the drama is still being dragged out and Adam isn’t getting a chance to just be about his music. Adam’s music is getting lost in this, which makes me sads.

There is no “reason” in my opinion to why they had to cancel Kimmel. It’s late night and it’s pre taped. The only reason would be if they’d banned him. And since they haven’t rescheduled him I say he’s still banned.

The View seems to have a different stand than the other programs since BW can pull strings. I think it’s not really their style to keep on talking about a person over and over again and not inviting that person to give their point of view put maybe I am wrong about that.

  • clearone

So basically, Adam is in the same company of everyone else who has a big drop in week 2 sales. Good to know.

Most albums are going to have a significant drop their second week – around 60% is normal. That would have given Adam a 2nd week sales number of 80K. And if all the publicity was helping, his sales would have even been higher.

According to HDD, FYE will sell less than 55K albums. That’s a pretty steep 75% drop. That’s more than the usual drop and no sign that the publciity is helping. (Again HDD is only predicting,)

(SuBo’s album looks to be dropping in sales around 40-50% which is pretty awesome considering how massive her pre sales were.

ITA with this! I was just typing a similar post when I saw that yours was pretty much echoing what I was writing/thinking! Yes, he has an amazing voice, and yes, I hope people will get to hear it and buy his music because of it, but I think that what Adam has that most other entertainers out there don’t today is a great voice AND a charismatic and a down-to-earth, yet entertaining, personality. Anyone who sees these shows will quickly see that he’s not the “scary” guy they saw on the AMAs. Plus, on “The View,” people will also get to see him perform, and I’m sure LKL will show clips of some of his performances. I don’t know if it’s this way in every market, but “Larry King Live” airs three times each day here in the Chicago area: once at 8 p.m., once around 11 p.m., and again in the middle of the night, so those people who aren’t yet fans and therefore wouldn’t tape or Tivo the show have more opportunity to catch it while channel surfing. I, too, think that all of this notoriety Adam is garnering will translate into sales.

Oh, and I don’t think the controverse hurt sales. He is an idol, they always drop like a stone the 2nd week right? Hopefully the last week sales will give him some respite with RCA!

I agree, and ALL artists drop in the second week. As long as the percentage drop is in line with others, I think it’s fine. Not that there weren’t opportunites lost, but the drop is to be expected no matter what.

  • Teri63

adamized: Thank you so much for collecting all of those dates. I’m not sure, though, but I THINK Larry King Live is on this Thursday night, December 10. Forgot all about the Spielberg thing!

Well, Adam will drop more than Kris since we’re coming from a very intense shopping week.

  • jpfan

All Idol albums do drop in sales the second week but the % is still important. It’s always good to maintain a position in the Top 10. I think Taylor Hicks had the biggest % drop of all Idol albums the second week (79% – maybe I made that up). But actually week three of sales will be key.

I just think the publicity from this incident isn’t necessarily leading to
higher sales. Hopefully by next week, the media will have moved on.

  • larchcat

Uh, sorry crazy block quote action on my last post and I can’t edit – second part was my statement.

Adam didn’t win idol (I think Taylor was a winner right?), he doesn’t have the large idol fanbase like Cook had and he is a bit polarizing. So I expect him to drop.

I wish Adam would sing some of the other great songs on the album instead of the same two. I love all the songs, and I think doing a slow one plus a different fast one would show new viewers the vocals that mesmerize all his fans.

According to HDD, FYE will sell less than 55K albums. That’s a pretty steep 75% drop. That’s more than the usual drop and no sign that the publciity is helping. (Again HDD is only predicting,)

I think that in the long run the publicity will help, albeit maybe not in the near term. WWFM seems to be taking off and fame plus hit record should translate into decent sales in the first half of 2010. I think he will at least do well enough to record a second album and remain in the public eye for a while. Regardless of whether Adam becomes the AI alum with the highest record sales (I dont think this will ever happen — I just think he is too polarizing to ever have the widespread appeal of Kelly or Carrie), I do think that he will go on to become one of the biggest pop STARS AI has ever had.

    Hey-
You know what just occured to me?

Adam spent last year’s NYE at the Upright Cabaret singing “What’s Up?” by Linda Perry.
Don’t think he dreamed that less than a year later he’d be with an album out with her, among other respected figures, writing and producing on it…
And I’m sure he’ll find some other televised gig for NYE… and even if not- think how his life has skyrocketted.
He’s singing for f***ing Stephen Speilberg!
He’s being buzzed about internationally and domestically.
Stop worrying about 2nd weeks sales!!!! He’ll be fine in the long run, I am pretty sure- he’s already a star.
Just putting things in perspective :-)

Huh? Never have had this happen with itunes before.

I had the same thing happen (altho i sent it as a gift to a friend and got an email that product was not available and my money would be refunded). I emailed itunes and got a response that the deluxe version was currently unavailable per the record company — unclear whether they are pulling the deluxe version or revising it.

  • jpfan

Well, coming off Black Friday will def increase the % drop. Anyway, since the exact numbers aren’t available, it’s really too early to discuss. My only point is that the publicity wasn’t helping to reverse the big drop. And Adam got alot of publicity this week.

  • aa618892

I have no doubt Adam will be a huge star in time. His insane talent, fascinating personality and a truly killer debut album will guarantee this. I am not expecting instant success however, in fact I didn’t even expect him to sell much more than Kris his first week. Adam will continue to do promo in the next year here and internationally and eventually many more people will fall under his spell. The fact that he is on so many international iTune charts without any promo is amazing and I believe an international promo tour will allow him to explode. I am happy to see WWFM doing so well but I don’t believe FYE is dead yet. That MV is killer hot and will also help promote it.

  • YankeeFan08

Well, Adam will drop more than Kris since we’re coming from a very intense shopping week. Exactly”

That’s true when you look at the percentage, but in reality Adam has sold way more albums than Kris.

  • saga

My only point is that the publicity wasn’t helping to reverse the big drop. And Adam got alot of publicity this week.

Yeah I agree, I don’t think he will reverse it until he has a few hitsingles under his belt. I don’t think the publicity has hurt him or his sales but I also don’t think it will help his sales in the short run either, he is still on the idol track. He is becoming a household name (I guess some might disagree) but I think to sell a lot he needs at least 2-3 hit singles.

  • saga

The international market is an unknown factor when it comes to Adam. They will clearly market him since they have announced an international release. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

  • luval

Thank you mr for the uplifting thread. I’ve had the same thoughts about “one year ago where he was”. Thanks to Pixie Baker too and the rest of you . Positive thoughts everyone. I always thought that book The Secret was a bunch of hogwash, but now after Adam saying he followed it and the basic theme it talks about, I feel that we must be positive. I know it’s only music , not international politics but man he and his music make me happy!!!!

Well, coming off Black Friday will def increase the % drop. Anyway, since the exact numbers aren’t available, it’s really too early to discuss. My only point is that the publicity wasn’t helping to reverse the big drop. And Adam got alot of publicity this week.

True, there was a lot of publicity surrounding Adam this week, but mostly just articles about the AMA fallout with ABC, GLAAD’s reactions, etc. None of that really would have sparked sales, I wouldn’t think. The only actual Adam appearances (unless I’m forgetting something) that the general public might have seen were The Early Show, Letterman and Ellen, and he only performed on Letterman, so the general public watching that didn’t get to hear Adam’s thinking on the subject. I think his personality is, in the long run, going to help him sell records. Other events at which Adam spoke, like the costume dedication to Hard Rock, were likely things only already established fans would have paid much attention, IMO. I think his GREATEST opportunities for (hopefully) positive press are yet to come with Larry King Live, The View, and Leno, as I believe he’ll be talking on all of these while also performing on The View and Leno. I’m assuming he’ll only be singing on Conan (which is great — but for those who saw the AMAs and were freaked out, I really want them to get to know Adam’s charming personality!)

  • clearone

GLAAD is to busy tripping all over themselves to make any sense.

ABC has taken a step towards fairness by inviting Adam Lambert to perform on The View

I personally don’t think this speaks to ABC being fair. I think it speaks more to the power of Barbara Walters.

I think Taylor Hicks had the biggest % drop of all Idol albums the second week (79% ‘“ maybe I made that up). But actually week three of sales will be key.

Taylor’s 2nd to 3rd week drop was actually quite low. He went from selling 298,199 in his first week to 201,881 in his second week which was a tiny 32% drop. Combined with street violations, he went gold in two weeks.

It’s his third week which was tragic. The lack of single support along with the post-Christmas sale’s environment led to an 81% drop. And they never recovered.

  • Izzie2

Someone mentioned the deluxe version of Adam’s CD is not available on itunes…I wondered about the dramatic drop down the chart. Is the regular version still available? It has dropped also.

I’m not so sure the continued talk show attention to the AMA performance is a good thing.

I’m glad you are back to being happy with Adam again. I think a lot of us shared similar “confused” feelings right after the performance. It was less than the stellar performance (for a variety of reasons) that we had all been anticipating for days. It all seems so silly now that I look back and rewatch that video (which I still do from time to time). I now feel that all this hullabaloo has been much ado about nothing.

  • BeckyMD

Didn’t HDD predict Allison’s album debut would sell 25k-30k? I see FYE is behind Just Like You on itunes the whole week. Does that imply FYE will sell even less? I couldn’t find Kris’ album in the top 200, maybe I miss it. iirc Kris’ ablum sold 25k? How many will it sell this week?

  • lucy

Well, coming off Black Friday will def increase the % drop. Anyway, since the exact numbers aren’t available, it’s really too early to discuss. My only point is that the publicity wasn’t helping to reverse the big drop. And Adam got alot of publicity this week.

Seems to me that hearing your music, especially a variety of your music, over time is what sells records. And, at this point, this hasn’t happened with Adam’s music. He does seem to be getting radio play now, so we’ll see if that changes.

At the same time, I still think that, in the long run, having people know your name and be familiar with seeing you around and such *will* help boost your career down the line, once people have decided they like your music. (if they decided that, of course, and whether that’ll be true of Adam is unknown …) …. I’m convinced that there is a benefit to being a celebrity, *if* you’ve also got some goods that people want.

So I really don’t think it’s a problem that these past couple of weeks have been all about Adam’s name. I really doubt that that’ll be a loss, in the long run. I think it’ll have some effect in helping him sell, *if* people discover over the next several months that he puts out music they like.

If people turn out not to like his music, of course, nothing will help. … But that’d be true if he *hadn’t* had a bunch of non-music-related publicity recently, as well.

  • Mary102

I’m assuming he’ll only be singing on Conan (which is great ‘” but for those who saw the AMAs and were freaked out, I really want them to get to know Adam’s charming personality!)

I agree those opportunities will help, but I think the big key is getting a strong single out there on the radio for more people to hear – and thus getting them to buy either more of the singles or the album. It looks like WWFM is doing better every day, and shows a lot of promise (not to mention, I personally think it is an awesome song that should be a big hit).

A lot of the press now is making Adam more famous to the general public, to be sure, but it’s not necessarily getting people to say, “oh, I need to buy that album.” But I don’t see any of the press as a negative, because just look at any up and coming artist, say Lady Gaga – she was an unknown last year, but slowly became a household name due to all the publicity, plus a hit song on the radio, and that helped her become such a big artist this year.

Oh, and I don’t think the controverse hurt sales. He is an idol, they always drop like a stone the 2nd week right?

No actually. If there’s going to be a massive drop, it’s usually week #3.

Week #2 usually has a lot of straggling hardcore fans picking up the album. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Adam – it seems like his entire fan base bought their copies in the first 3 days and after that, the album started to drop fast.

You can tell when an Idol is really going to be huge because they don’t see big drops from week #3 on. That happened with Carrie and with Daughtry.

Usually if an idol album plummets, it doesn’t recover. There’s always a first time but so far the track record is not good.

Again I am perplexed that numbers are so important in the AI bubble. I will never understand this and will never comprehend how they “prove” anything. But then, I am old and withered and can only look back on music history and see how things have played out before and I know numbers are never the true measure of anyone’s success or failure.

I’d be surprised if Adam sold any albums this last week. He has been villianized so often and black balled by a major network that it will be a wonder if anyone thinks his stuff is worth purchasing. That being said, our illustrious idols that are wearing their white hats proudly should be selling like hotcakes. So for every Adam album that is not purchased the other idols should be picking up a sale….so I would expect out of this world numbers for the rest.

  • jpfan

Maybe SuBo is picking up Adam’s sales. There has to be some reason people are buying that album :)

The View seems to have a different stand than the other programs since BW can pull strings.

Yes, Barbara is not only the executive producer of “The View” but she’s also the CO-OWNER with ABC. I have read that she has final say as to who will appear on “The View”.

    http://theview.abc.go.com/staff/barbara-walters/bio

Ms. Walters is also co-owner, executive producer, and co-host of The View

This would seem to presume that Pat Boone is still relevant. Seriously, the music biz does not favour white hats unless you are talking Christian Music Sales. Rock and pop music have long been free of the domination by goody-two-shoes.

Nor are sales a zero sum game. If people don’t buy from artist A, it doesn’t mean they will go buy from artist B. They may go buy a latte at Starbucks and a new lip gloss instead.

  • Mary102

Thanks Kirsten for the Taylor numbers. Week 3 did him in that year.

Tess, numbers are not just important to AI fans, they are important to record executives too. I can’t imagine they are pleased with a massive drop by Adam, it shows right now he has limited appeal outside of his AI fanbase. He needs to pick up record sales, otherwise he will stop getting all the support from the label he is receiving now. Record companies aren’t going to put money into an artist if all he sells to his a rabid group that will buy anything he puts out. I’m a fan of Adam. I’m also a big fan of FYE the album. Now Adam has his name out there and he also has a fantastic album. What team Adam needs to do now is to connect these two. Well, I think more telling for Taylor was that he never got anything on the radio.

His album was released in December and his single in February. His sales were already gone by that time and there was little motivation for the label to push the song. That and his songs were only suitable for AC which doesn’t move a lot of units. His single did reach top 20 in that format.

People need to keep hearing the music ‘“ so if Adam can get something to stick on radio, the music sales will (likely) benefit from that.

Yes. That’s what we’ve been arguing about all these months on the Mediabase thread. There are several people that think that radio play is irrelevant, but I think an examination of relative iTune single placements this week does indicate that airplay can help. Single sales don’t always translate into album sales, but if we presume that radio airplay is driving single sales, it may also help with album sales. Television appearances can trump airplay (provided the viewing audience is large enough), but the effect is short lived. We can see that with the bumps in sales for WWFM after Ellen appearances (it has now nestled back into it’s spot prior to that appearance). Radio tends to result in a more steady sales because it creates long-term exposure.

I have to say something about the iTunes rankings which are only part of sales. Right now on the overall chart there are about 20 Christmas Song Albums. I couldn’t believe how many there were so these are definately seasonal numbers. If you substract those Adam’s drop is not so severe. Also he is still high up in the Pop chart which is music he is directly in competition with. I agree that we will see the normal drop but he still has a ton of promo coming and I know RCA is moving forward with an international promo. He has managed to chart in several countries Top Ten without any promo so I think he will only improve there.

Susan Boyle is selling a story. She owns the Chicken Soup for the Soul crowd right now. Heartwarming stories can be a method to sell music for a while. Plus, the press she is generating is creating a self-sustaining feedback loop of sales. The more press she gets for sales, the more people who are interested in being part of her feel-good story.

I don’t think that you can generalize her story to the entire market. I don’t think that anybody would argue that Lady Gaga appeals to the same “white hat” crowd as SuBo (I’m sure they share fans, but Lady Gaga isn’t trying to be a feel-good story), yet she’s still selling.

I don’t think that one can create linear equations with sales in this way. The market is just too heterogeneous. There is room for lots of different artists in different formats all at the same time. Some people will be drawn to the “bad guys” and some to the “good guys” and some will just want “good music” (with the definition of “good music” dependent on the listener). I think most people just buy albums when they want to and if they happen to dislike somebody who put out a CD this week, they may just not buy anything at all. There is no state mandate that we must purchase X number of CDs each week (although, that is probably something 19 could get behind).

But you just proved my point, Clay is making money because he has a rabid fan base that buys everything he puts out, but because he isnt selling outside of that rabid fanbase no effort has really gone into any of his recent albums.

Yep. Clay is caught in a vicious feed-back loop. Because his fans will buy anything he puts out, the record company can’t be bothered to find anything good for him to put out (why bother, they’ll buy it anyway?). Meanwhile, he can’t get any new fans because he isn’t putting out anything good or getting label support.

Record labels can either try to grow you or just milk your existing fan base. What they do depends on what they think they can do with you. They are in it for the most amount of money for the least amount of cost. Like most businesses. There are a few projects they take on to build credibility, but those are few and far between.

  • saga

I dont know, I am not so worried. I have listened to the CD and it’s solid. There are lots of potential hits there. I am pretty sure he will drop like a stone the coming weeks but if Adam can get airplay then he’ll do alright.

I don’t believe the time limit for the success of the album is restricted to the first three weeks.

  • Mary102

Kirsten, if you’re hanging around here, could you provide the link to the quickcut mediabase summary charts? (The ones that show the summary of spins for a song)? I’m fighting with the mediabase page right now trying to find that info. Thank you!

  • saga

And let me just say, that there is a HUGE difference in the kind of music Adam has created on his album and what Clay is producing. In the end it all comes down to that.

  • lucy

Record companies aren’t going to put money into an artist if all he sells to his a rabid group that will buy anything he puts out.

Well, alrighty then. So lets call out the mourners for the rest of Season 8. If Adam is dying then Allison and Kris are totally dead’ ¦and Allison hasn’t even come out of the gate yet. If Kris and Allison don’t sell more than Adam this week and since their is no controversy surrounding them’ ¦.then its time to pack their bags.

Well, I don’t know that a lot of people are saying *that.* … There just hasn’t been enough time, for any of the three of them, and I think everybody realizes that …. None of them has sold like Daughtry or Carrie out of the box. But I think most people realize that some people are slower to take off. And Daughtry and Carrie fit precisely into current very popular niches, and while these three all have qualities that make them potentially a fine fit for popularity, they aren’t *exactly* like stuff that’s mega-popular right now, and when that’s true it might take you a bit longer to carve a niche. It doesn’t mean it’s impossible, though. …. It’s more like the way non-Idol pop starters go than Idol ones, but I don’t see why Idols can’t start off that way, too.

Kris is beginning to get radio play — so he’s proven that he can get at least some of that; it *is* buoying his singles sales some; and if he can keep on getting played and he tours so that new people become familiar with his songs then his album may start selling. Modestly but steadily would do. (For this, it would be preferable if people started hearing two or more of his songs, but actually just one will do well for you if it becomes a *really* big hit — don’t see LLWD doing this, but still…) It’ll take some time before anybody knows whether this happens or not. He *is* getting played on Top 40, though, and his music is in line with quite a few potential listeners, including college-age people, for example, so he’s not like Taylor, appealing mainly to an “undesirable demographic.”

Adam is just starting to get some radio play and video play. They cut it a little close with this, started a little late. Nevertheless, at this point we can see that stations are beginning to play him, VH1 is picking up the FYE video, etc., and if that continues solid, then people will get the exposure to his music that can drive sales if they like it. …. Hopefully — and it looks like this will happen – WWFM will get high enough on the radio program directors’ agendas so that they’ll continue playing it at a reasonable level in January. … And, again, like Kris, he will probably start touring in the New Year. And, like Kris and unlike Taylor, his music *does* seem to have potential to appeal to the “desirable” demographics. So, as with Kris, it may well start selling steadily in January, as people start hearing it more.

Allison has awful numbers, currently, and hasn’t started getting radio play yet. So maybe she’s in the worst trouble. However, I’m sure they know that she’s 17 and is mega-talented and also has the potential entryway of the fast-growing Hispanic market. So she has more time to get more chances than the other guys.

I think they all have a chance to do *very* well. But I guess the fact that it’s only a chance doesn’t bug me as much as it does some people, since I see that most of the previous idol finalists *have* managed to carve out at least small careers in some niche in the music industry. And most of them seem pretty happy with that. And I’m absolutely certain that Kris, Adam, and Allison *all* have the talent, work ethic, and level of appeal to do that. …. There’s nothing wrong with a smaller career, and since they can all get that, I won’t be miserable (nor, I think, will they), if things pan out so that that’s all they get.

  • Mary102

His album was released in December and his single in February. His sales were already gone by that time and there was little motivation for the label to push the song. That and his songs were only suitable for AC which doesn’t move a lot of units. His single did reach top 20 in that format.

Yeah, that timing just seems like all kinds of wrong. But then I think we talked about how Taylor represented a sort of transition period in how 19 dealt with AI alums, and how the album/singles had to be sold. Since then (and even with Daughtry), the singles were either out before the album, or right at the same time (Daughtry case). So they were more in the forefront of people’s minds and reached more people outside of the AI bubble. In Taylor’s case, to have that much time (and Feb being a pretty dead period) between the album release and single was just asking for trouble.

Those are no longer publicly available. If you have a Mediabase account. Go to the Mediabase Chart page, 7 day chart tab, Song Analysis. Either enter the artist you want or the name of the song. Then, a list of songs will appear. Change the pull down menu on the right to read quickcut and press go.

Yes and no. I understand what you are saying, but on the other hand I don’t understand why Daughtry isn’t making more money when he has been touted as a big seller and seems to be pretty popular and not just within the Idol circle. It kind of floors me that Clay is making more money than Daughtry (for now).

It kind of floors me that Clay is making more money than Daughtry (for now).

Wasn’t that money list kind of a snapshot of one year over the past several? And wasn’t it the year that Clay had his really big Broadway role and some other stuff, while Daughtry was touring but his album wasn’t new any more and thus selling more moderately, etc?

Fantasia, for example, has had a couple of very high-earning years recently. She’s done some theater, like Clay, for one thing. But this particular snapshot didn’t pick up her big money times, either.

I’m pretty sure that if you were able to total up their incomes over their whole careers, and then prorate it for how many years each had been working, you might get rather a different listing.

In entertainment, your income tends to fluctuate a *lot* so no one-year snapshot is going to really tell the tale, at all.

I’m not a numbers person AT ALL ‘” Is this good or bad at this point, considering it was released around Thanksgiving?

It’s a very solid start …. It has to go up a *lot* to become a hit. But it’s very new and has risen pretty quickly and is still rising, so that can definitely happen, given these numbers so far.

(It can also go into a dead stall and drop like a rock at this point, of course! But so can any song…at any point.)

So far, so good, is what this number says to me.

  • Mary102

lucy - you’re long analysis made some good points. I like it. In the end, I really think the radio play is huge for these guys. With any major artist, it really is a huge factor in just getting people more in the forefront. Daughtry blew up, in large part, because It’s Not Over became a beheamoth on the radio – that thing was EVERYWHERE – even in DC, where we hardly ever hear anything until 3 months later :-) So that got him a lot of exposure and cred outside the AI bubble. Then he had a number of other successful singles all coming off of that one.

Artists like SuBo, Andrea Bocelli, etc. sorta follow different rules, especially this time of year, because they sell like hotcakes without a hit single, or radio play. They sell because of their niche as a great holiday gift, holiday fare, etc. Plus SuBo with her added publicity and backstory on top of that. So not every artist needs radio play to sell a lot, but for the niches that Adam, Kris and Allison are in, that is one of the big factors of success.

ETA: And I agree that WWFM seems to be doing well on the radio – it is increasing spins and adds rather rapidly, and jumping up the charts quite a bit. So hopefully that forward momentum will continue.

We have some really smart, good writers on this blog. Thank you for your posts, don’t want to mention specific names as I would leave someone out that should be included.

BTW the other day when some were concerned that fans contacting ABC would just make the situation worse – crazy rabid fans and all that – looks like enough of us contacted ABC in an intelligent manner to make a difference. It wasn’t just about Barbara as she wouldn’t have rushed to get Adam on her show so quickly if no one was interested. I did email ABC once and don’t consider myself “rabid” but I am a fan and thought one cancellation proved their point. All of Adam’s ABC appearances for quite some time may be taped, but I’m okay with that.

UPDATE: We just spoke with one of Barrios’ senior underlings at GLAAD, who tells Queerty “the whole situation has been embarrassing” for the organization. GLAAD “fucked it up ‘ ¦ from the beginning” and is now “trying ‘ ¦ to cover our ass” with statement after statement. Barrios “is not happy with ‘ ¦ how this played out. We’re all sort of just trying to pretend this was successful.”

You don’t say? Think anyone noticed?

  • Chicagolaw

All Adam needs is radio spins and a Top 40 single. Obviously, the label realizes this and has scrambled to get Adam involved with the Jingle Balls to push WWFM on radio. The album will be be fine, 19/RCA was just way late out the gate, imo. They should have had WWFM released back in October, and it could have been soaring right now while putting the album in a better position. FYE is a great CD getting great reviews. With the slow single start, people will just have to be patient.

  • Teri63

Chicagolaw — Because I’m a genius (LOL!), I’m assuming from your post name that you’re from the Chicago area. Is WWFM playing on ANY stations in the area? I keep flipping between The Mix and 103.5 (KISS FM), and I haven’t heard it yet. Am I listening in the wrong places, or is it just not playing here yet?

  • saga

Someone said it was playing at some Boston station for the first time yday. Chicago seems slow.

  • Mary102

FYE is a great CD getting great reviews. With the slow single start, people will just have to be patient.

FYE really is a great album – The first day I got it – I listened to it twice (on a long car ride), and immediately I had EVERY SINGLE SONG stuck in my head – that is very rare for me. Usually, I struggle to remember anything but 1 or 2 biggies from the album, but everything on FYE is so unique, hooky, etc.

I think that fact alone is kinda what ticks me off the most about not only Adam, but of course Kris and Allison struggling so much with album sales. IMO – these three represent three of the strongest debuts from AI alum, and that they’re not doing as well as previous years (which included a lot more dreck from the first albums), just makes me sad :-( But I believe in them all! They will do well :-)

  • DLee

I really agree with this. The trick is getting people to listen to it all for the first time. There is probably a lot of really good music/albums out there that I would really like but have never heard….how do you get people to take the time to listen?

  • Teri63

    Chicago seems slow

OK — That’s what I was hoping, that Chicago was just lagging behind the East Coast and that the stations hadn’t just decided not to promote it for some reason. I do know that a couple weeks ago, I just heard LLWD every now and then on The Mix, and now I hear it pretty frequently, so that’s just now really picking up spins around here. Since it’s been out since late Sept/early Oct., I guess I just have to be patient.

    Me, too.

This is the first year where I’m not making excuses to myself for why the debut album of a favorite of mine kind of disappoints me. …. I know that a lot of people love Cook’s and Daughtry’s albums, for example, but to me those albums kind of sucked too much of the juice out of the guys, for the most part, and I loved both of them on the show. I find a lot more of the juice of Kris, Adam, and Allison in their albums.

  • lucy

That’s what I was hoping, that Chicago was just lagging behind the East Coast and that the stations hadn’t just decided not to promote it for some reason.

Obviously, there are no real rules here, but I seem to remember that, in the past, Chicago, like DC, has often been pretty slow to pick songs up. Some stations are just more (business!) conservative in that way, I guess.

  • Mary102

I really agree with this. The trick is getting people to listen to it all for the first time. There is probably a lot of really good music/albums out there that I would really like but have never heard’ ¦.how do you get people to take the time to listen?

Yeah, it’s hard to say what exactly makes an album sell. Singles are so much bigger nowadays than album sales, especially in the pop genre. The albums that have sold the best are usually by established artists who are already well known, or new artists who have a lot of hit songs out (Lady Gaga comes to mind). This time of year, too, is also being impacted by holiday cds, which are selling so well now.

I very rarely even buy albums now – I usually just buy singles. Lady Gaga is one of the only recent artists where I’m seriously considering buying her album, simply because I already know that I like a lot of her songs, based on having heard them on the radio.

  • Chicagolaw

Hi Teri, I don’t think WWFM is playing yet on The Mix or the KISS station. Which is a little puzzling. I could be wrong, though, maybe I will check on the Mix website to see for sure. It seems like at the very least it should be getting some spins in the 9PM and later slots. I do know that FYE initially was getting a few (very few) spins at night, then nothing. The Mix is notoriously slow to add new music, but WWFM really should be getting something on there at this point. I hope things change soon, because the single really needs this market, and The Mix, at least, seems to love the Idols.

  • KLI

I’m also In the Chicago area and I still haven’t heard a single adam song. Right now 101.9 (HAC) is playing Kelly clarksons already gone. I hear lady gaga constantly and BEP. Nothing on 103.5 either. Still waiting!! I’ve heard LLWD several times but not recently. Now John Mayer is up. Still waiting!!!!

  • Mary102

I know that a lot of people love Cook’s and Daughtry’s albums, for example, but to me those albums kind of sucked too much of the juice out of the guys, for the most part, and I loved both of them on the show.

Lol – so true. Cook and Daughtry were my two favs from those years, and I was really quite obsessed with Daughtry his season. But, I hate to admit this, I don’t know if I even listened to his album all the way through when I first bought it – I certainly had no where near the enthusiasm for his album as I do now for Adam’s. All the songs just seemed too safe and bland – no personality to them, imo (unlike FYE, which is just oozing with personality and different moods). I didn’t even bother buying Cook’s album.

And on the flip side, Adam is by far my fav this year (big surprise – lol), but I really really loved listening to Kris’s cd – it has some excellent songs on there. And Allison’s as well.

  • KLI

I’m hoping a Chicago jingle ball with adam is announced soon. Kris was just here for one last night maybe there are no more. Booo!!

  • Chicagolaw

Hey KLI, I don’t know how frequently you listen to The Mix, but I have gotten a weird vibe a few times from a couple of the morning people when Adam’s name has come up in the conversation. Have you noticed anything? While The Mix is super slow, WWFM should be starting to see a few spins in the late night slots—that is their pattern. I don’t think there will be any other Jingle Balls since Miracle Near St. Street just went off. I do know that Kris participating in the concert, as well as that Vineyard thing in CA because The Mix was somehow affiliated with this as well, has given him a huge boost with the station.

  • Teri63

Although I’m sad they haven’t begun spinning WWFM yet, I’m glad I’m not going crazy. Thanks to all of you who answered my question. I’ve been fanatically flipping stations since Thanksgiving (not counting all the flipping I did before hoping to hear FYE) to no avail.

I wouldn’t worry as much about your own station – because they really do behave entirely differently in different parts of the country. More important is to look at the adds posted each Monday and Tuesday, plus the spin charts to get an idea of how many spins he’s getting, the increase, the audience impression numbers, etc.

Thank you. Although I’ve watched Idol since Season 2, I’ve never been at all invested in the show after the finale. I mean, I was casually interested in how my annual favorites were doing post-Idol, but until this year, I never even purchased a single, let alone follow charts/sales. It’s all pretty interesting, but frustrating, too! I’m really glad, though, that WWFM is gaining popularity in some parts of the country. Hopefully, we’ll follow here soon!

Yeah, in DC they are also very slow to play new artists, so, case in point, we are only JUST starting to hear LLWD, though other parts of the country have reported hearing it much earlier. So that’s why I’m being a little more patient about when I expect to hear WWFM here (though I did hear the last few notes the other night, and I was in HEAVEN – oh, man – to finally hear his voice on the radio was just beyond cool :-) )

I’m putting money on the table right now that Adam kisses at least one of them on the hand and then they all beg for him to kiss their hand.

No seriously, is there ever an interviewer who has been able to resist the charm offensive that is Adam Lambert.

Truly, resistance is futile. World domination is within reach!!

ITA! He loves to hug the ladies, but I thought he might keep it to kissing their hands – which actually I love! Maybe he’ll kiss the hands when he first comes on and then give them hugs at the end of the show.

I don’t know if anyone (19, RCA or Adam) had to make any concessions, but I do think it’s pretty interesting that ABC states that the reason his appearance is taped is because he had a scheduling conflict. Will be interesting to see what comes of this appearance, i.e., future ABC gigs.

Just when you think things are calming down a little re: Adam, here comes something else! I think his being on The View is great!

  • Teri63

oh, man ‘“ to finally hear his voice on the radio was just beyond cool :-) )

I can only imagine! I’ve heard both FYE and WWFM on radio, but only over the internet when I KNEW stations were going to be playing it from links here on MJs. I’m not really a Kris fan (appreciate that he has talent, seems really nice, but just not my taste, yada yada), but I get really excited when LLWD comes on. I’m just always so happy for him and his fans that his first single is taking off. I’ll probably jump through the roof when I eventually run across Adam on a radio station!

  • crazylady

I don’t know when they are taping The View, but I have DirectTV and I’ve already set it to record because it lists his name as performing on the 10th! Woo hoo!

  • Teri63

Thanks, LittleAngie. I think you posted this once before some weeks back, but I didn’t write the info. down and then couldn’t find it. I’m heading out on errands here in a second, so I’ll experiment to see if I can get it all the way out here in the western burbs! Even if not, it’s good to know that ONE STATION IN THE AREA is with the times! LOL!

  • DLee

I honestly don’t mind that fact that it is taped. When they tape don’t they sometimes tape the song a few times and then pick the best one? Didn’t someone say when they went to the Letterman taping they sang it more than once? At least I know that if he accidentally trips – they will do a retake. It really is much easier on my heart this way.

  • dcglam

I am not very happy with our radio stations right now.

Well, the good thing about Hot. 99.5 is that, if they do pick up a song and start playing it, they can often get to the point where they play the *heck* out of it….

I remember going through this with Elliott’s Wait for You. They didn’t play and didn’t play it, and then they started … just a little … and people started requesting a bit (just a bit, because they spook easy), and then gradually they played it more and they ended up playing it a *lot* for a long time…..

So they’re loyal to songs that they decide work for them!

I just noticed that LLWD is up to #27 on their playlist, so it’s rising pretty fast over there. Let’s hope the same happens with WWFM…. More good news is that they really aren’t prejudiced against Idols, which some stations kind of seem to be.

  • crazylady

I’m glad Adam is going to be on The View even if it is ABC trying to calm a lot of angry fans, extend the olive branch, etc. (but my gut keeps telling me it’s a little more than that but I’m not sure what). And–I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Adam’s management team hasn’t made it clear to him that this is a very good opportunity (to be on ABC) and not to “smack” this gift horse in the mouth again! He doesn’t have to apologize for the performance itself, but it wouldn’t hurt if he said he was sorry for all the problems it has caused ABC – or something like that.

At least we get to see Adam (and he will charm the socks off the ladies) and we get to hear him sing!

Being on The View will help calm a lot of folks, but only for a while. They will still expect ABC to reschedule him on Kimmel in 2010 like they said they would in their cancellation e-mail.

We can always hope that if ABC likes the responses he gives on the show that they will reconsider his appearance on NYE. That would be a great way to start the new year – for everyone involved!

Hey Luvadamlambert, dcglam, and gigi3…. I am also totally frustrated with the DC metro area stations and have never heard FYE or WWFM on any station. Today my internet was down until a few minutes ago (very painful) and I listened to Hot 99.5 from 8:00 am till about 5:00 pm and just about wanted to kill myself. Believe they played the same 8 songs over and over and over again. Sometimes they talk about Adam on the morning show, and don’t seem to hate him, but what does it take to hear his music? I am so glad that someone out there has heard him.

Like DCglam said, I just eventually turned it off and put the CD on instead.

Oh, I was also out in LA all week last week and listened to Ryan Seacrest on 102.7 kiis fm on the way to work and back every day and never heard any Adam (or Kris) music.

  • Ellessay

Yeah, it’s hard to say what exactly makes an album sell. Singles are so much bigger nowadays than album sales, especially in the pop genre. The albums that have sold the best are usually by established artists who are already well known, or new artists who have a lot of hit songs out (Lady Gaga comes to mind). This time of year, too, is also being impacted by holiday cds, which are selling so well now.

I have to laugh a bit about this. When I was a teen, I’d skip lunch at school to save enough money to buy music. I could only afford the 45 singles. The only albums I bought were the Beatles, because I knew I’d love anything they sang. As I got older, I hated to buy a whole album when there might only be a couple songs on it that I really liked. But 45s disappeared in favor of cassette tapes and then CDs. Now with iTunes, we can purchase those singles again and make up our own playlists. Adam was pretty smart in putting together a nice playlist for us.

Yes, I think the holiday music is impacting album sales right now, and surely that will cease to be a problem in a couple weeks.

My theory is that invested fans who have been keeping on top of things via the internet were impatiently waiting for Idol albums to drop and were out buying as soon as possible. Casual fans will buy as soon when they see it’s available at the stores, but with money being tight, it may not be until after Christmas. I know when I’m Christmas shopping, I don’t buy music CDs for others. I don’t know what they may have already bought themselves. However, I will be getting a couple of iTunes gift cards for grandkids.

Hopefully after people are tired of the holiday music, they’ll be ready to buy something different and sales will improve.

    Chicagolaw–

What? They are playing WWFM in Lake County? I’m here in DuPage county and nuttin’. How can they play it in one county but not another??

By the way, I’ve never heard Adam mentioned on any of the early shows here in Chicago so I can’t really confirm whether they have an attitude about him. I only listen in the car so it’s easy for me to miss though.

Here’s hoping 101.9 does the right thing and start playing WWFM soon!! 103.5 is a top40 station though so I don’t expect to hear it there anytime soon.

  • KLI

Chicagolaw–sorry, my post sounds like I’m challenging u. I’m not at all, but I’m on my iPhone and can’t edit or type too well. If u say it’s playing in Lake I believe u!!

Happy to say that here in South Africa Adam’s FYE single is now No 1 on radio pop chart – apparently thousands of requests are coming in!!!

So we seem to be a bit ahead of you, USA! YAY!

Hey Gigi3, lucy, schufly, and luvadamlambert~
I’m so glad to hear that there are quite a few of us from the same area.
My favorite radio station in the Washington DC area has always been MIX107.3. I am a big fan of the morning Jack Diamond show. When FYE first came out, I called the station quite a few times to (politely) request play time. They were always very polite back to me over the phone by saying, “If we have it, we’ll play it.” Of course, I never heard it. I’m still thinking about e-mailing Jack Diamond directly. I haven’t done that, yet, but that is definitely my next trick! I’m not that shy…. ;)

  • Teri63

OMG ‘” The Mix in Chicago is actually playing FYE right now!!!!!!!! I’m jumping out of my skin in excitement!

As I was listening to Open House Party with headphones, my hubby got my attention to hear that FYE was playing on the Mix in Chicago. THEN, I put the headphones back on just in time to hear some lady calling in to request WWFM on Open House Party. So it’s playing as I type. What a fun night. Of course, my family thinks I’m totally insane because I keep squealing, but that’s a small price to pay for such auditory pleasure!

  • Teri63

Mainegal — you definitely win in the FYE purchase dept., but for a good cause! I wish I had someone who would want it as a gift. I’m alone in my Adam fandom around here. My friends who watch Idol were all Kris fans. We’ve had fun sharing updates on our favorite Idols, though!

  • mila3

Hi, more lurker than poster but can’t resist – have my iTunes deluxe (iPod), collectors edition(unopened), & 2 cds (1 car, 1 home) & will be gifting to 2 people who do want it. Yep, doin’ my share to keep Adam in dimmers (ha!).

  • sidewalkstory

    I have 4 CD’s. So far.

  • Teri63

mila3 — Wow! You surely are doing your part! I had ordered a regular CD (without bonus tracks) from Best Buy way before the AO offer came out. So then I ordered it and the I-tunes version for my I-Pod. My intent was originally to return the original CD at Best Buy, but then I decided to keep it for my car. So glad I did! I listen to it on the way to and from work every day!

Congrats on a very successful night of auditory pleasure!
(oh, the many pleasures of Adam!!)

Thanks! Hearing him on The Mix in Chicago was soooo exciting because I was just commenting on here earlier tonight that I hadn’t yet heard Adam on the radio when I didn’t already know he’d be on (like, on Open House Party, you can guess you’ll hear him at least once). They just haven’t been playing him yet here in the Chicago area. Then, within just a couple hours of my complaining, the Mix spins FYE. I would have figured they’d be more into playing WWFM, but maybe it was a request or something. I just caught the tail end of the d-jay saying something about new music at 9. So it might have been a request show.

Ahh, so happy for you (yet also jealous :-)) DC is so slow with the music adds, and I only heard a portion of WWFM the other day. But I know that squee feeling when you hear his voice on the radio :-)

Hi Teri63 (fellow squealer) – my loving hubby quietly placed a pair of headphones (nice Bose ones) by the computer very soon after Adam and I started seeing each other on youtube (ha!ha!). He has the funniest, most bemused look on his face whenever he has to get my attention while I’m fangirling away (with headphones on), it makes me laugh so hard. But the most jealous one is my dog, who purposely jerks the headphone jack off when he thinks I’ve been on mjs too long – but he does listen when I turn the speakers up and seems to like it.

  • Teri63

BeckyMD: I couldn’t find OHP on a Chicago station either. I just looked it up online and am listening from God knows where! Here’s the link, if you need it: http://radiotime.com/program/p_40639/Open_House_Party.aspx

I’ve been online trying to figure out how to make a request from the Mix — If I figure it out, I’ll post it here! As far as gifting from Amazon goes, I have no idea — sorry!

  • Mainegal

BeckyMD….I have only gifted thru itunes. pretty easy there.

My favorite radio station in the Washington DC area has always been MIX107.3. I am a big fan of the morning Jack Diamond show. When FYE first came out, I called the station quite a few times to (politely) request play time.

Another DC fan here – oh, sorry to tell you this, dcglam, but Jack and his morning show are now on my bad list – they talked crap about Adam last week (basically taking some of his quotes out of context, and making it sound like all he wanted to do was shock like he did at the AMAs, and that that would lose him all his fans, etc.) – it was pretty stupid on their part. Sorry, but they just weren’t very fair to him, whereas 99.5 (yeah, Kane Show) have been a little nicer (despite the usual radio snark, of course).

And yeah, DC is always slow – they are super conservative on radio, which means they only play the same 8 songs (Britney, Gaga, Miley, Taylor, BEPs) ad nauseum. But I am hearing LLWD on 99.5 now, and I think WWFM will break through soon :-)

  • mila3

Teri63 – listening to your Open House link (thanks), says its from Sioux Falls S Dakota. Wish I could say I like what they’re playing now but oh well…maybe will be Adam soon

  • Mary102

I don’t use Amazon much, except to buy physical cds – so you could always just get one of those, and even have it shipped directly to your friend.

  • BeckyMD

Mary102~Thanks for the heads up about Jack and his morning buddies. I’m actually glad I happened to miss that show — most likely listening to my CD instead. What gets me is that they can devote time to ripping Adam apart, but not play his music. And you are so right about the DC stations playing the same songs over and over again. Mix 107.3 plays Daughtry constantly!

  • mila3

That’s better…”Bad Romance” …you’re so right about finding other music once we started following the Fierce One…I really like Lady Gaga…what do you think Teri63, Mainegal?

  • mila3

Sorry – this is OT but how do you do the ” quotation” thing?

  • Mainegal

Mila3….today I can not stop playing Master Plan. Tomorrow….who knows..

ETA that’s what I love about FYE – so many different sounds and moods..I can’t imagine ever getting tired of it. Makes it hard to switch gears and put on a different CD. I’m gonna wear this one out! Good thing I have extras!

  • BeckyMD

That’s better’ ¦’ Bad Romance’ ‘ ¦you’re so right about finding other music once we started following the Fierce One’ ¦I really like Lady Gaga’ ¦what do you think Teri63, Mainegal?

Talking about Lady Gaga. She will come to Chicago and give 3 shows here. I just check out the tickets. The cheapest ones are 200+. I don’t know if I should squeeze a chunk for that.

  • Teri63

mila3: I like Gaga a lot! Hate “Fireflies” and can’t imagine how it got so popular, and agree that “Music Again” and “Broken Open” are favorites on FYE. My VERY favorite, though, is “Pick U Up.” I love “Whataya Want From Me,” too, but I wish he could sing something else on The View. It’s already getting to be like “Mad World” did for me; I loved the song, but it was ALL he played for every daytime talk show, so I actually got a tad tired of it. I loved how he sang “Music Again” on the Early Show. That’s the real bummer about his being axed from the Jay Leno mini-concert gig. We might have heard him sing some new songs live. Oh well….

  • GaGaGlambert

Talking about Lady Gaga. She will come to Chicago and give 3 shows here.

I’m a big fan of Lady Gaga and Adam. She sold out 4 shows in NYC at Radio City Music Hall this coming January – that’s @23,000 seats combined. I wasn’t able to get seats, but will keep trying.

FYI – this is a 2006 live performance Lady Gaga did of “Fever” in NYC – what a duet it would make with Adam.

…”the cheapest ones are $200…” BeckyMD

I imagine its all those props & dancers…still that is what Adam is dreaming of doing, isn’t it? When he gets his wish, it’ll probably be pretty costly too…watch me get a second mortgage to go (only half joking)!

  • Teri63

Wow, that would be really amazing to see her there!

Can you believe 8 months ago, she was performing at the House of Blue and the tickets were only $20+?

That makes me want to start checking out some of the young talent at House of Blues. You never know what stars of tomorrow you might see! I’ve always been envious of the California area people who saw Adam at Upright Cabaret. How amazing that must have been then, and even more so now to know that they saw him when…!

  • revcat

Ooooh, Gaga at the Chicago Theatre! That’s a landmark. Was there when I was a kid, but now I live out west. Still, my dream is to see Adam at Madison Square Garden, but I’d also “settle” for the MGM Grand Arena in Vegas (I’m thinking big!).

    Mainegal
I also feel at times rather alone in my fandom..do we all have that experience to some degree in RL?.. Ah well, they will all catch up to us shortly!

My only Adam fan contacts are on facebook and here. In RL I only know 2 people who liked Adam on Idol but they are not following his every little move like some of us here and I don’t think either one bought his CD. Losers! (j/k)

  • Teri63

what?!?!?! The MIXX in Chicago played both FYE and WWFM an hour ago and I missed it?

I think the Mix only played FYE at around 9:00. I heard WWFM on Open House Party right after that.

  • Mainegal

BeckyMD/mila3…I think Adam has affected my music taste in two ways.
His “out side the box” style has made me more receptive to artist like Lady Gaga…loving her! (I wonder if I would have given her as much of a chance pre-Adam.) The most interesting music tends to be acquired taste.
As Adam says: “she is so brave”. I really appreciate her originality and artistry.
Secondly, I am more and more bored by the (Teri63 words).. “total crap” that passes for popular music these days. I can not take another listen of taylor/miley etc. while I wait for HH to appear.

  • mila3

    Thanks, BeckyMD

I went to link but it’s not playing. It wants to run a MediaPlayer Ext and am hesitant to let it

  • ScorpioBSB

BeckyMD/mila3/Mainegal: Since Adam, I’ve noticed just how many of these artists cannot really sing all that well. He has ruined me in that respect. And, that is why I can sit and listen to his album for hours on end, because I LOVE his voice. He is amazing and stands out so far from the norm!! Well, you guys know what I mean…..

Also, I have not listened to this much music since I was in college, back in the 70′s. He has definitely re-ignited my interest in music. I also agree that I am listening to people that I would NEVER have listened to before, but I give them a chance due to Adam’s recommendation. I end up liking some of it!

  • Teri63

I can not take another listen of taylor/miley etc. while I wait for HH to appear.

Here’s where I hope WWFM gets picked up by Mix stations because I’m not too crazy for a lot of pop (Lady Gaga’s a rare exception). To be honest, though, I’m kind of bored with a lot of the soft, alternative stuff that’s out there that the Mix stations seem to love, too. That’s why I think Adam piqued my interest so intensely, and why I’m hopeful he catches on with others. Even his “pop” songs have interesting music and lyrics, which is more than I can say for the majority of the stuff I heard on Open House Party tonight!

  • revcat

Hey I know it’s getting late on the east coast, but if anybody is still awake I just found this on the internet. Somebody took a bunch of Wicked clips and spliced them together but the “soundtrack” is Kelly’s My Life Would Suck Without You… Watch for Adam especially @ 42 seconds :)

  • Mary102

Count me as someone who has found so much more new music because of Adam – heck, I even discovered Led Zeppelin thanks to him :-) Plus Lady Gaga and Muse – need to listen to more, but those are the two big ones for now.

The sad part is, I’m starting to sing along with songs I actually despise

Lol to this! I’m a sucker for a good catchy hook, but I’m a classical musician first, so it took me awhile to actually be ok with most pop music, which is incredibly repetitive and stupid (well, most of it). I’ll sing along to Party in the USA, and then a part of me will kind of die inside – lol. I have very eclectic tastes, but I tend to go for music with a bit of an edge, above all else (why I like Adam so much, plus acts like Muse and Gaga).

Mary102~Thanks for the heads up about Jack and his morning buddies. I’m actually glad I happened to miss that show ‘” most likely listening to my CD instead. What gets me is that they can devote time to ripping Adam apart, but not play his music.

TBH – Jack’s show tends to skew more conservative/safe imo – I think he tries very carefully to tred that line too – to not tick off his fans. Also, a part of me thinks I remember hearing that that radio station is owned by ABC/Disney – which could explain his reaction to Adam (essentially, they were discussing the recent cancellations, and they were definitely siding with ABC on the issue).

ETA: Ahh, in fact, just confirmed it – 107.3 is owned by ABC radio – there you have it – they were never going to side with Adam on the cancellations :-)

  • Teri63

    Thanks for the link, revcat!

Since Adam, I’ve noticed just how many of these artists cannot really sing all that well. He has ruined me in that respect.

revcat – I too feel alone in my fandom, … though I have some friends who know and like Adam as a performer, they are casual about it. Coming here is a real treat.

Funnily enough, a friend who is indifferent to him became more interested when I mentioned that he had read the book “the Secret” and it had helped him to weather the AMAstorm…I think it made him more human and appealing to her…maybe she will even become a fan.

Mainegal – yes, Adam has really expanded my musical horizons and I thank him for it.

  • BeckyMD

I’m experiencing the same regarding Gaga. And Queen and Muse which I would’ve thought of as too theatrical before. My preference surely leaned away from easy-listening toward heavier flavor. In FYE the album, DTRH is my all time favorite now. I’m also looking forward to Suburban Decay and Voodoo. I have a feeling that I’ll love all these bonus tracks (except for TFM).

  • ScorpioBSB

Taylor Swift, while a gifted songwriter, is NOT a good singer either. Shocking when you think about how many awards she has won for singing.

Mainegal – thanks for the last laugh…feel the same and would definitely shown up in “uniform”…goodnight …the puppy is cross-eyed and falling over by my feet…it truly was a treat “talking” to you all

Taylor Swift, while a gifted songwriter, is NOT a good singer either. Shocking when you think about how many awards she has won for singing.

The first time I heard Taylor Swift singing was on a Jay Leno’s show where she sat down with Jay for an interview and then performed in a concert outside. Something I thought the now-canceled Adam on Jimmy Kimmel show would have been. That’s why I was so mad that the show was cut, let along NYE concert. I know it would be too late for Jay to set up a similar one for Adam, but I’m dreaming about that.

Brought this link over from another thread. Here is someone that has a voice, doing a partial cover of WWFM.

Alll I want to say is Adam is the most gutsy honest guy, sweet yet sexy, strong yet vulnerable guy and personally, I think it’s we st gals who have done more for him than Glaad. -I don’t have any respect for wishy washy. Besides, Adam is doing his thing, with or without permission from anyone else. It is always one person , one individual with a great spirit- that makes a difference- think Ghandi, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy. It is Adam Lambert I admire and I am concerned he is too naive for his own good, despite his native intelligence.I love that kid.

BeckyMD: I am so with you on the disappointment at Adam not getting a chance do make those appearances. I’m just hoping for really exciting New Years Eve news early next week.

This Adam experience is beyond a roller coaster ride. I’m amazed at how up and down my emotions go with the daily Adam news. I don’t think I have been this invested in a performer EVER!!

ETA: Ahh, in fact, just confirmed it ‘“ 107.3 is owned by ABC radio ‘“ there you have it ‘“ they were never going to side with Adam on the cancellations.

VERY interesting, and great detective work, Mary102!!

DTRH is my all time favorite now.

Oh, I LOVE DTRH – I love the lyrics and chorus especially! And I get majors lulz out of the fact that Adam must be the only AI alum to use the word “hos” in a song :-)

I’m hoping he gets onto one of the big NYE shows, too. It would be great in terms of exposure for him. I like the sounds of the one with Elton John and Caty Perry! That would actually be cooler than NYRE, IMO!

IA. I wanted to stay cool and refused to admit the obvious fact that I was invested, well, not until last night when I got Adam’s tweet that he would be the View and I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear in an accounting class. The professor must have thought I was driven crazy by the numbers.

I’m not a fan of these controversies. I would have walked away if these were about any other singer. But the album is so good that I feel I have a solid core to root at and to go through all the craziness with Adam.

I had to admit my Adam compulsion when I realized I was anxious about leaving my computer for fear I would miss something important. SAD….

Can someone explain to me how they can continue to boycott Adam on ABC after The View appearence? Won’t it look like they are just “picking and choosing” shows to cancel at that point? Or even worse, won’t it appear they are simply using Adam when it suites them for ratings (Barbara Walters Special, The View) while cutting him off randomly. I have heard a lot of people say that this View appearence is a one-time thing, but I don’t see how ABC can pull that off without losing any credibility they might have had.

    No.

    Absolutely!

ABC … credibility??? that train has left the station loooong ago.

I have Adam’s CD through Amazon but that one doesn’t come with Master Plan. Could someone tell me which of the versions’s of FYE have that song on it? I’m addicted!

  • Mainegal

adamized…the itunes deluxe. and I am obsessed with MP! vocals are killer! (as we would expect)

ETA – you can buy just the single off of it.

Both Lambert’s interview and performance will be pre-taped, and they say its because of a scheduling conflict, but maybe the network was afraid Adam would repeat his AMA performance as an f-you to the network — which would basically be the most awesome pop culture event of this decade. Oh well. [

mmb…..thanks for the link. loved the comments even more.
    esp. this one:

But look at how great he is taking this stress and pressure. Do you know anyone else who could stand this much heat? And he is doing it while plugging other artist’s work. He gushes about Lady Gaga who I never cared for but I am now starting to notice because of him. He urges us to listen to Kris Allen. I had all ready forgetten about him. He tells us of Allison Iraheta’s new song which to me sounded like Avil L. BUT I wouldn’t even had pulled it up to listen to it had he not brought it up. He tells us Pink wrote him a song and now I am buying Pink’s last album. The guy has influence. He may be the new kid in town but folks listen. And we all can’t wait to see what he does next.

Lol – though somehow I seriously doubt Adam would ever do that, at least not for a year or so ;-) He’s way too gracious and good about it all. But it would be awesome!

Well, the unofficial word is that it was really Barbara Walters’ weight that got him on The View, not ABC specifically. However, I’ve said since the cancellations were first announced that they made next to no sense – especially to cancel two late night appearances, which aren’t even regulated by the FCC guidelines. ABC has gotten a lot of flack for all of it, and right now I almost feel the whole thing is a game of “who will blink first” – they want an apology out of Adam, and a lot of press is saying ABC is more in the wrong. Now, their hypocricy is just continuing – they’ll keep using him for ratings, yet feign indignation at his “wild antics” by cancelling him from smaller shows (like Kimmel).

  • Mary102

BUT I wouldn’t even had pulled it up to listen to it had he not brought it up. He tells us Pink wrote him a song and now I am buying Pink’s last album.

Argh – now if only fans of Pink, Gaga, Muse, etc would check out his album in turn. Must. Be. Patient…
