Send me fashion tips for the finale

There are a few possible reasons for the ouster of resident pro Melinda Doolittle from American Idol this week. One, she was too much of a pro from the start, and voters love to see the most- improved contestants go further. Two, Mel didn’t reach the very important little girl demographic the way Blake and Jordin do. And then there’s my (correct) theory, that boy-girl showdowns are simply more interesting.

Whatever the reason, Doolittle is dunzo … until next week’s grand finale, when everyone including Sanjaya (kill me) will be back on the stage to sing those dreadful medleys. And there’s no telling who else will show up at Wednesday’s extravaganza. Michael Jackson? Madonna? A hologram of Abraham Lincoln? Guessing seems pointless.

One thing’s certain, though: I’ll be there, in the thick of it. Yes, folks, I got a golden ticket to Hollywood, and I didn’t have to sing a note! This isn’t a gloatfest, but rather a heads-up so that you can look for my unbelievably silly on-the-scene coverage next week.

But let’s move on to more important matters à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the Idol questions yet unanswered…….

It’s not the same without Melinda

The analysis I heard most often this week from Idol fans was that if either Melinda Doolittle or Jordin Sparks were eliminated, next week would be no contest — that whichever one survived would walk all over Blake Lewis, because he’s just not in their league as a vocalist — or, particularly in Jordin’s case, a personality.

So now that theory gets to be tested…

Melinda Doolittle looks to recording soul music

Fans were stunned that Melinda Doolittle was ousted from “American Idol” Wednesday, but she seems to be taking it in stride.

It happens, Doolittle said Thursday. “I was probably getting a little of the older voters . . . They may not have spent a full two hours voting for me, which was OK.”…

    A better-than-ever Robert Plant

…I haven’t had a chance to comment on “American Idol” since the competition started heating up.

Melinda Doolittle and Blake Lewis definitely deserved to make it to the final three, but Jordin Sparks should have been gone a few weeks ago. Yes, she’s perky and fun, but doesn’t hold a candle to Doolittle.

That was evident this past Tuesday. Lewis’ take on “This Love” by Maroon 5 and “When I Get You Alone” were both rock solid.

Then Doolittle really strutted her stuff on Ike & Tina Turner’s “Nutbush City Limits.” Sparks, meanwhile, was just so-so on Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard For the Money.”

LaKisha Jones’ diva attitude always bugged me; I wasn’t sad to see her go. The two-part season finale airs next Tuesday and Wednesday on Fox…

    ‘Idol’ alters finale format

American Idol producers have switched plans for their broadcast of next week’s season finale, which will feature Glendale’s Jordin Sparks competing against Blake Lewis for the title.

The city had announced Wednesday night that portions of the show would be broadcast at a free viewing party at Jobing.com Arena, with an early feed of Idol and a celebrity host. But on Thursday, a city spokeswoman said the show had canceled the segments from the contestants’ hometowns.

The weekly viewing party for Sparks’ fans will continue at Westgate City Center, off Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue, with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

With Blake Lewis in the finale, ‘American Idol’ should be filled with surprises

And unlike many of others Lewis hadn’t studied the show.

“The cool thing about Blake is that he never watched ‘American Idol’ before,” said Gina Clocksen, who finished ninth. “He just came and he’s Blake.”

While others fretted about details he seemed to be enjoying himself…

Kenney-Marshall: In mourning for Melinda Doolittle

When will the madness end? First there was that woman with teeth the size of bathroom tiles and a name that sounded like a place from a Disney movie.
Sure Fantasia could sing, but she was also a bit scary to watch. I imagined she somehow angered the natives on the set of ‘Lost’ and they shrunk her head just enough to make her teeth appear large, allowing her singing to remain strong.

With Blake Lewis in the finale, ‘American Idol’ should be filled with surprises

    By Mike Hughes
    Gannett News Service

For “American Idol,” this was supposed to be the year of the women.

The female singers drew raves and the guys drew shrugs. One judge, Randy Jackson, called for “a girl-girl finale”; another, Simon Cowell, insisted that “my girl Melinda (Doolittle)” be there.

Then things turned out the way they do most years. The finale – Tuesday and Wednesday on Fox – has one female (Jordin Sparks, 17) and one male (Blake Lewis, 25) with two hugely contrasting styles.

Is it too early to start talking about what Blake and Jordin should sing next week?

Last year, they had Taylor and Kat re-do two songs and then sing their coronation song. From Nigel’s comments, it sounds like that was what they were told to do, but perhaps they only chose to re-do two songs. Who knows what the rules will be this year since rules seems to be a little different. And who knows what the deal with the coronation songs will be. From the fact it was a voting contest, one would think that there would be only one coronation song, but the contest seemed to have fizzled (even amongst us hardcore AI fans, few admitted to having had listened to the song choices)

Repeating song choices is tough. You will always be compared to your original. It’s hard to recapture the moment of surprise and delight again. And, if you do it too close to the original, it cheapens both performances because it seems to practiced. I think that Diana made a mistake re-doing a song that she had done in the Final 3. It was a memorable performance, but people had just spent 2 hours the previous week voting for that performance. The voters have already paid their dues. And Fantasia had overdone “Summertime” by the end of the season. We’d heard it too many times (at least 3). (BTW, these are just examples to illustrate some of my reasoning for picking songs. Let’s not re-hash previous seasons.).

So, what two songs do you think that they should reprise next week?

For me, Blake’s three best performances are: Somewhere Only We Know (24), Time of the Season (11), You Give Love a Bad Name (6). I think that Blake has to avoid beat-boxing all of his songs because that will annoy some people. One song must be sung through. I also think he needs an up-tempo number because the coronation song is likely to be dull. “You Give Love A Bad Name” is probably his “moment” in the competition, but is it too recent? I think “Time of the Season” was his best, but if he twins it with “Somewhere Only we Know” it will be 3 slow songs. So, I’m stuck.

Okay, I say, start of the show with “You Give Love a Bad Name”, sing “Time of the Season” 2nd and end with the dire coronation song with no beat boxing.

Jordin’s three best songs are “I (Who Have Nothing)” (11), “A Broken Wing” (7), and “To Love Somebody” (4). I think that “A Broken Wing” is a no-brainer. She’s been singing that one for years and it’s a home run. “I (Who Have Nothing)” should not be sung three times. “To Love Somebody” is too recent.

So, I say, start with the dire coronation song (get rid of that thing off the bat). Then, reach back for that long-forotten Final 24 performance of “Give Me One Reason” (show you too can update an arrangement) and then bring it home with “A Broken Wing”.

    What say you?

Fantasia is a hit on Broadway. I have read at least 4 reviews of her performance as Celie in the Color Purple and they have all been overwhelmingly great. If you get the NY POST yesterday, they not only gushed over her singing, but her acting as well. Her sophomore CD might not be making platinum, but so what ? Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s rakinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ in the big bucks on Broadway. Here is todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s review in the New York Newsday :

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no fantasy, Fantasia is the real thing
    BY LINDA WINER

    This is no casting gimmick. Fantasia Barrino – high-school dropout in ninth grade, single mother at 17, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner in 2004 – makes a phenomenal stage debut as Celie in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Color Purple.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Much as fellow à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ discovery Jennifer Hudson swept into the Oscar books as Effie in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dreamgirls,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the 22-year-old known as Fantasia steps confidently into the demanding role in which LaChanze won last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Tony Award. With a startling mixture of subtle delicacy and raw power, she dares us to take our eyes off her.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Color Purpleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is not merely Fantasiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first musical. This is the first musical the self-described à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“little country girlà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from North Carolina ever saw. She caught Broadwayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first big black-supported and black-attended hit after the producers (Oprah Winfrey, we assume) recently offered her the role without an audition.

    Making Memorable Music, More Money
The Loudoun Summer Music Fest kicks off June 3 at the Belmont Country Club.

    By Erika Jacobson

With musicians like The Black Crowes, Pat Benatar, Peter Frampton and Taylor Hicks, this season’s Loudoun Summer Music Fest promises to be bigger and better, Tracey Parent, president of the Loudoun Foundation, said.
“The level of the bands has definitely surpassed anything we’ve ever had,” Parent said. “Each year it just gets better and better.”

Kat not showing up at all this season (if true) is annoying. Especially this season when they have just being going nuts with guest performances. They should have had her and Taylor back to perform during the semi-finals just like they had Carrie and Bo the year before.

Elliott is like any other contestant on Idol and is open to criticism. I hated the snark when it seemed like he was out of the scene for good but now snark city. To All Parisians ( is that whay they call Paris Bennett fans ? ) and Interested parties :

Paris is #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers Chart
Paris is #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers (West North Central) Chart

Paris is #15 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums Chart

What on earth is Heatseekers you might ask ?

Well, here’s what Wikepedia tells us :

Top Heatseekers is a weekly albums chart introduced by Billboard magazine in 1993 whose purpose is to highlight sales by new and developing musical recording artists. Albums appearing on Top Heatseekers may also concurrently appear on The Billboard 200.

Top Heatseekers contains fifty chart positions. Although the chart’s policies have changed slightly over the years, its current rules for an album’s eligibility to enter Top Heatseekers are as follows (per Billboard):

“The best-selling albums by new and developing acts, defined as those who have never appeared in the top 100 of The Billboard 200. If a Heatseekers title reaches that level, it and the act’s subsequent albums are immediately ineligible to appear on the Heatseekers chart.”

( full disclosure : I love Paris but dislike this album ).

  • Allen

In what universe does E (unsigned by Clive) get to come back and Kat does not? I thought it was all about the $? Someone explain this please.

I am glad Elliott had a chance to come back as well, but it is just weird. Kat has said several times that she would love to come back so I don’t think that was an issue. There appeared to be plenty of time in her schedule she could have fit an appearance in. There has been no indication the producers don’t like her. Ken Warwick said she was his favorite last year. Nigel has generally spoken favorably of her. Simon Cowell when asked earlier in this season who he would like to see come back and sing he said Kelly Clarkson and Kat. If Chris does appear on the final two next week then they will have had the 3rd, 4th and 6th place finishers back but not the 2nd? It is just strange.

Exactly. That’s what makes it so strange. Katharine has never bashed the show and by all acounts, the people behind the scenes liked her a lot when she was on the show. It’s just very odd.

  • Kirsten

Kat not showing up at all this season (if true) is annoying. Especially this season when they have just being going nuts with guest performances.

I agree. They have time to slot in all these other artists, but completely ignore last year’s runner-up? That’s nuts. They have forgotten their roots.

In what universe does E (unsigned by Clive) get to come back and Kat does not? I thought it was all about the $? Someone explain this please.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension of vast cheese and is as timeless as Simon’s hairdo. It is the middle ground between fame and obscurity, between talent and manipulation, and it lies between the pit of train wrecks and the summit of great TeeVEE. This is the dimension of WTF. It is an area which we call the American Idol Zone.

More Fantasia reviews on Broadway trickling in … She has single handedly made Oprah’s production a hit !!

This one from the Associated Press’ Drama Critic :

Fantasia scores in `The Color Purple’

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070517/ap_en_re/theater_color_purple_revisited

NEW YORK – Funny how a new star can jolt a long-running show. In a good way.

Consider Fantasia, one of the ubiquitous “American Idol” alums who have traveled to Broadway in the last several seasons. The performer is now starring as Celie, the put-upon heroine of “The Color Purple,” a musical version of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. She gives the production new heart, soul and star power.

More important (at least for the producers), her engagement at the Broadway Theatre, where the show is now midway through its second year, has helped the box office. And you can see why in the woman’s performance.

Fantasia has a natural stage personality, a direct, sweet charm that gets her à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and theatergoers à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ through the more bumpy, convoluted aspects of Marsha Norman’s overstuffed stage adaptation. The story follows Celie’s four-decade journey from horrific childhood to abusive marriage to independence and self-esteem.

The actress exudes a gentleness that makes the woman’s stoicism, some might say passivity, seem palatable and, what’s more, heartbreaking. And we haven’t even gotten to her way with the songs.

I’m a little upset about Kat not being on AI, just because..why? I don’t really understand why she wouldn’t be invited back? I’m sure they could have had her on there doing a canned performance instead of Robin Thickes ultra creepy performance.
It seems like a win-win situation all around for AI, RCA, and Kat so I am just boggled as to why they didn’t ask her back at anytime in the competition.

  • sarahinwv

Do We know for sure that Kat won’t be on next week? Was Bo on the finale ? I don’t remember.

  • Lisa B

MJ, any chance of setting up the thread 3 hours earlier tomorrow as I will be out for most of the day?

Unless someone else would like to do the honours with the news links, any offers?

  • radname

Bo wasn’t on the finale last year, and Peisha has said Kat won’t be there.

  • sexygirl

They should have had her and Taylor back to perform during the semi-finals just like they had Carrie and Bo the year before.

I agree but from what I’ve witnessed every year seems different as far as who returns. In season two, I believe only Kelly returned from Season One, not Justin. In Season Three Kelly, Ruben, Kimberly Locke, Tamyra and Clay returned. In Season four Fantasia returned but she did not for the finale. I don’t remember if any other Idol from the previous year returned at season. And in Season Five Carrie and Bo returned to perform and Carrie and Clay returned for the finale. This year, it seems as if most of the top six from Season Five returned or will return in some capacity, as well as Carrie and Kelly. Who really knows why Kat isn’t returning.

As far as I’m concerned only the winner should be returning because it does get to the point where every fan feels their favorite should return just because one of the non-winners returned to perform. Or even worst, feel their favorite should always be on the same platform as the winner.

  • Lisa B

    Remember to Enjoy this week!

On the bill with her will be Bowling for Soup, Mat Kearney, and local “Idol” contestant from this season — Marisa Rhodes…

    http://www.pennlive.com/lehighvalley/index.ssf/2007/05/remember_to_enjoy_this_week.html

  • Lisa B

The only performer who will always be brought back is the previous year’s winner. Any others are just a bonus.

  • Kirsten

Was Bo on the finale ?

Bo wasn’t on the finale, but he did sing earlier in the season during a results show.

  • Kirsten

Hey, tour tickets go on sale tomorrow

The tickets for Toronto went on sale today.

  • radname

I don’t think i’ll go to the concert this year. I would love to see some blake, melinda and jordin sing. But i do not want to see haley or sanjaya.

  • skylight1219

But, you know how American Idol is. Who knows which one might be the next J. Hudson? They sure don’t want to miss the back patting if that happens again. Kat should be invited back, or maybe they will have her on as a surprise. She sure can sing better than the has beens they’ve had on so far this year. Not a Kat fan, per se, but, this is just all wrong.

  • Lisa B

They are probably flying in Leona Lewis instead.

  • Paula

Maybe Kat will be on as a surprise but Peisha isn’t allowed to say that she will be there. Bucky was in the audience once, and they didn’t acknowledge him either, so one never knows what they’re thinking.

  • sexygirl

Not every runner-up was brought back. Neither Diana Degarmo nor Justin G. ever grace the stage of AI since they left. So, honestly it’s not out of the ordinary if Kat does not grace the stages of AI with her presence. I personaly could not care less if Taylor did not return but that would seem odd since he is last year’s winner. I never thought this show was like a beauty pagent but it is. The winner from the previous season has to be present to welcome the current year’s winner. The only time that did not happen was Season Four. When it was rumoured that Fantasia was sick on Finale night.

  • Kirsten

I believe only Kelly returned from Season One, not Justin.

I’m not sure when he returned, but I’m positive that Justin returned to sing at one point in some season. I distinctly remember some horrible song about “hips” or something. Granted, it might have been a nightmare.

  • sexygirl

Okay, to end all of this, why don’t AI just invite all of last season’s top 10 contestants back. Not only will it make their fans happy but it would also make for great tv. After all it would be the first time it ever happened and I’m sure a lot more entertaining than anything happening so far this season.

  • Kirsten

They are probably flying in Leona Lewis instead.

I heard that she cancelled an interview this morning on British TV and they reported that it is still possible she might be on the finale.

  • sarahinwv

U know what ?… how good was that finale last year? I mean , even the Kelly segments were cute… and the Clayfan/ Clay surprize thing… OH LORDY !!! That’s classic cheesy TV and I loved it !!!! :thumbup_tb: :laugh_tb: :cheese1_ee:

  • Tracy

Last year’s finale was awesome! I STILL listen to the guy’s medley from last year. It’s pure bottled joy for me.

To backtrack a little, I finally heard Wait For You on the radio last night. Yay Elliott!

  • Boulder Soul

OK, it is a shameless repost from over a week ago but, it fits nicely into the conversation.

    *** wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t appear on the AI finale becauseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

    1) We just might be THAT lucky.

    2) Her MAXIM cover photo shoot just happens to be scheduled the same day as the AI finale.

    3) Her fake case of bronchitis and/or laryngitis returns.

    4) Peesher demanded equal camera time.

    5) Her father is STILL crying.

    6) She canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t find a dress that is short enough to wear.

    7) She will be too busy tending to three new fugly dogs while her BFF, Paris Hilton, is in lock down.
    8) After more nose-picking photos surface, all the musical guests and the two finalists refuse to hold any microphone that *** might touch.

    9) AI producers rebuffed her request to install a stripper pole for her performance.

    10) There really is a God.

  • radname

I loved last years finale because of Kat. I just loved how she sounded that night, the nerves were gone and she was finally singing without them for once on the show. (also Elvis medley she sounded great.)
I wonder what big star they’ll have this year?

  • Allison

  • Kirsten

She has a concert the day before and the day following the finale.

I’ve always thought that if Idol came calling, any or all of these Idols would skip a concert. Sure enough, Elliott cancelled one or two concerts to appear this week. His album and single sales have skyrocketed. Worked out well for him. AI is great exposure. Even other mainstream artists have caught onto that.

I think that Kat should have been invited back.

(Please, let’s not make this into an Idol fight. I just think that concerts can be rescheduled. Avid fans will understand).

  • Boulder Soul

um… there was one part of the Finale , where Kat seemed totally nervous as she was singing……………… can you say MeatLoaf ?????????? ..freaky scary !!!!

  • Allison

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m positive that Justin returned to sing at one point in some season.

He definitely returned. I believe he sang “Unchained Melody” during Season 2. He may have performed another song at some point. I have bad memories of muting him.

  • radname

I don’t think Kat was nervous at all during the Meatloaf performance, during rehersal it freaked her out, considering in rehersal she just stands there and makes sure all the moniters are working and everything while he goes all out.

  • radname

But it’s not just as simple as showing up the day of and putting on a show, there’s rehersals that take time. And she’s not touring by herself, so I don’t think getting added on to some pretty big radio events and then saying nevermind we’ll go on AI last minute is pretty carpy.

Home with a cold and listening to Z100. Kat and Daughtry both performing tonight on their big radio concert. Elliott just came on as the #5 top song played at noon. Elliott was obviously a last minute thing but they should have planned to have Kat at the finale or singing instead of Pink/Akon/etc. Still don’t get it. With the exception of DAUGHTRY, they could all use the boost for album sales. Wow, Home is #3 top song …Idol domination. (Home is a better song that WFY but I like E’s album alot.)Good God. A huge gallery followed Taylor Hicks around at the Pro AM golf tournament in Birmingham:

“According to Hicks, who pulled a harmonica out of his pocket and played a quick tune after his thunderous first tee reception, hitting that first shot of the day was more nerve-wracking than his next big gig, appearing on the season finale of “American Idol” Tuesday.

“That No. 1 tee shot is tough,” Hicks said. “That’s a lot more pressure than going back to the `American Idol’ stage.”

What a sweetie! He gave his harmonica to a child.

“But it was Hicks who seemed to have the most fun, finding himself featured in a tournament that he’d had to sneak in to watch just two years ago.

“The thing about being inside the ropes is to try to make a positive impact on people,” he said. “I got that chance when I gave my harmonica to a child out there with cancer. I signed it and gave it to him, and he asked me what it was. I told him to blow into it, and when he did, you should have seen his eyes light up.

“Who knows what that could lead to? But that’s when you realize the impact you can have on people.”

I only really liked Chris singing with Live and the guys medley from last yr’s finale. My least favorite things were most of the celebrity duets because other than Live, they didn’t make sense. Triple Threat: Holmes Drescher = McPhee

As I was hanging out during the cocktail reception at the BMI Pop Awards last night, I could have sworn I saw Katie Holmes walk by me.

But no, it wasn’t Mrs. Tom Cruise.

When I got a better look, I realized it was American Idol songbird Katharine McPhee.

Looking at the way AI has treated/is treating Taylor and Kat, I now think voters did Melinda a big favor.

Wow, now it’s the way AI is treating both Taylor and Kat. Man, does this stuff ever stop. I thought technically only the winner was to return. This is such reality that this show is really a joke. When every fan feels their favorite it entitled to the same treatment as the winner the show really does start to lose it’s purpose.

Might as well hand out recording contracts to the top 10 and might as well invite them all back the following year.

Naughty Boulder, you know Katharine and plane flights donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go well together, especially if there is a concert.

Yeah, considering the one that caused her not to attend a concert was because of poor weather. But then again Katharine does have unholy powers and is able to control the weather with her mind.

My favorite duet of last year’s finale was Elliott and Mary J. “One” is an amazing song. I know a lot of people thought Mary hogged the spotlight too much during the performance, and she probably did, but I loved it.

weirdest performances were definitely Tony Braxton gyrating all over Taylor and Meatloaf and Kat. Kat looked like she was scared sh*tless! She said later she was just trying not to laugh. The whole performance was just soooo uncomfortable to watch. I don’t care if Meatloaf is a “legend” (i persoanlly wouldn’t categorize him as such), he is one creepy dude.

Technically there is nothing saying that the winner has to return the following season either. It is all up to whatever Idol wants to do. They don’t have to have either of them back, but they typically have and I think it is kind of a shame if they don’t. I am not going to lose any sleep or anything over it if they don’t, but I think it will just be one more thing they messed up this year.

  • sammy

What is with this “winner take all” stuff? Who made up that rule? AI has the right to ask any of the contestants back that they want to. If someone has out a new CD that might be doing well, it looks good for the show…we produce winners. As for Kat, she definitely would have been a logical choice to bring back and maybe it will happen.

  • pj

Thanks, Steveo! Sounds like Sligh and the gang are having a great time. I can’t wait for the tour! Glad to hear Blake hasn’t lost his sense of humor!

Kirsten, I think Blake should do “Time of the Season” and “You Give Love a Bad Name”. I like the Keane song too, but you raise a good point about the coronation song being a ballad.

As for Jordin, your suggestions sound good. “Give me One More Reason” was fun and we haven’t seen a successful fun side of her lately. Considering it was one of three songs she reprised in her hometown visit, I bet that’s her choice.

    Interesting.

For next week, the three songs both performers will be singing are 1) a song from the songwriting contests, 2) a song of their own choice, and 3) a song from earlier in the season.

I wonder if Blake will do an entirely new song?

    and

When asked about singing a Maroon 5 song, Blake admits that he has know Maroon 5 for about six years, and used to be close friends with the drummer. He called them a week before he performed their song and asked “for a solid”. They told Blake he could perform whatever he wanted.

So maybe he really did call them and get clearance and arrange for them to be on the show. ;-)

The show was cheesy even for AI’s standards, but I do remember that Nilsen pulled of a fantastic version of U2′s “Beautiful Day.”

Just realizing that Kat is putting out another single at the end of May. So her not being on idol is even odder since she could use the promo. Doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t AI make $ from Clive/RCA? I guess they try to keep the TV show and the music part more separate than I thought. I guess thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a good thing???

Yes & no. In 2005, Sony BMG’s contract with 19 for the music rights to the Idol finalists expired and — faced with competition from the other major labels (Universal, Warner, and EMI) — Clive’s crew had to pony up some cash as an incentive to get 19′s new owner Robert Sillerman to sign on the proverbial dotted line.

It does not appear, however, that American Idol, the show, gets a percentage of profits from the album sales of its finalists forever after…

When asked about singing a Maroon 5 song, Blake admits that he has know Maroon 5 for about six years, and used to be close friends with the drummer. He called them a week before he performed their song and asked à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“for a solidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

I can believe this happened. I just don’t understand why the producers picked a song for Blake that they hadn’t cleared. What’s up with that? Did he have such great choices for two of his songs, they just picked one of his two choices? Or did they pick a song for him hoping it would clear at the last moment and risking that they would have to assign him a new one? Or, was it serendipity that Nigel was planning on assigning him a song he had already managed to clear himself?

Interesting….is it possible that the deal has expired again? Could that explain why there was no Clive this week? No “guys in suits” like last year? Is this the reason behind there being no compilation album?

Could, horrors of horrors, 19R be planning on signing the Idol winners all by themselves? Some other entity?

    Any buzz?

    * “Guys in suits” – last year, the behind the scenes reporters noted that there were a bunch of music execs at the show with Clive. Even if Clive was too sick/bored/evil to show, perhaps the “guys in suits” could have shown up to survey their new acquisitions.

The level of sophistication of this year’s potential winners surpases anything of past years. Yes, Taylor was slogging it in bars with his own band, but did he have friends in high places? Kat was a nobody as well. This year, Jordin had made the rounds of all the talent shows (Star Search, American Juniors, and America’s Got Talent) and she already has an album, not sure about Blake, but he seems to know people and was a full-time muscician.

    Update from HRwH:

Way to end TRACK 1 of Highrollers with Heart’s campaign with a bang!

Because of your continued generosity, we were able to end the Jaguar project
with a total of 243 jags! While fan contributions covered jags for 224 of
Children’s 243 beds, Ace himself purchased the last 19 to put us at goal.
This will be enough for Ace to hand out one to each child at the hospital
during his next visit. Good work!

We also ended the May auctions with a total of $1580 raised from them that
will go towards building the FAA. Way to go!

We will be ordering and mailing out Jags to our donors during the end of May
and early June, so pay attention to your mailbox for your special delivery.
During June, we’ll PRESS PAUSE while we take a brief hiatus and gear up for
TRACK 2 when we relaunch in July. We will still be accepting donations
throughout June, so feel free to drop by the website any time you have the
urge to give! Ace and Children’s appreciate both your generous donations and
your efforts towards spreading the word about our cause and promoting the
HRwH website with your family and friends, making our future for TRACK 2
    look brighter every day!

See you again in the summer!

Yes, Taylor was slogging it in bars with his own band, but did he have friends in high places?————

Depends on your definition of “high”. Taylor opened for many larger acts; when I saw him in Chicago & he brought Keb Mo up on stage, he introduced him to an old friend who had been a mentor to him for years. Musicians on circuits like that for years like Taylor do make connections. But connections don’t necessarily lead to contracts. I don’t see how Blake having musician friends makes him any more “sophisticated” than Taylor or Jordin entering every contest ever made makes her more “sophisticated” than Kat. They just all tried their own different paths to success, that’s all.

Last year’s “American Idol” runner-up is coming to town with a sexy new look and sound.

Last year’s “American Idol” finalists are working it harder than any of their predecessors. Taylor Hicks is headlining clubs and casinos. Kellie Pickler is opening for Brad Paisley. Chart-topping Chris Daughtry is gigging all over the place.
Now runner-up Katharine McPhee is hitting the radio-concert circuit

Okay, something is wrong with this picture. When the comments that Sanjaya was 17 and inexperience there were responses of “so is Jordin.” Jordin has more stage experience than any normal 17 I know..

Also, after reading that post about Jordin, does marketability alone make a person record deal material and if so, why wasn’t Blake, with all his inside connection, or Jordin, with all her stage experience, get signed. I can understand Taylor and Elliott being turned down but we keep saying that Blake and Jordin are more marketable than Melinda, so why weren’t they not marketable before?

  • radname

Well supposidly Chris R has connections to, it could be just you aren’t a sound the record company is looking for. Jordin is not your typical pop star look, but if you appear on AI you have an already built in fan base by the time your first record is out, instead of slugging it like you would have, had you not been on the show.

  • griz

    What’s new, Pussy-Kat?

“…..The Californian with the big, Broadway-ready voice gave herself a musical makeover, serving up a collection of dance pop, R&B and pop. Coupled with her new sex-kitten image, the sound suggests she’d be a strong candidate for the Pussycat Dolls’ reality show.

Q Your album hasn’t been a blockbuster and neither has Taylor Hicks’. How do you feel about that?

A I think the record industry is in a weird place right now. Considering that Taylor didn’t have anything on the radio, he’s done pretty well for himself. I have to say I’m very satisfied where I am right now. Coming off a show where everything happens so fast and you rise to the top so quickly, [it's good] being able to kind of be on the other side now and see how other artists have to start out. I can certainly say now that I’ve had to do things to try to work my way to the top; it wasn’t just all handed to me. I kind of appreciate this way my music is evolving. We have three more singles to go. As far as sales go, I don’t pay attention to the weekly reports nor do I want to know about them….”

    Sigh.

I should never rely on memory when discussing the Byzantine structure of the American Idol machine. From 2005:

As part of the deal, Fox also announced that it had reached a new five season agreement with Cowell that will keep him on Idol through at least American Idol 9. As part of the joint agreement, Cowell’s Sony BMG label will continue to be the designated record label for winning American Idol contestants — a right that Fox, not Sony, will pay 19 Entertainment $5 million a season for Sony BMG to maintain. In return, 19 Entertainment will begin receiving a larger percentage (a 4% royalty increase) of the recorded music sales revenue of future American Idol artists.

    Thus:

    (1) In 2005, although Sony BMG retained the music rights to Idol artists, it was FOX who paid or agreed to pay 19 $5 million per season for those rights on behalf of Sony BMG.

    (2) 19 has indeed been getting a portion of record sales all along; and starting with AI5, negotiated a 4% royalty increase for future AI artists.

Boy, when I’m wrong, I am spectacularly wrong!

No, Elliott’s deal is with Sony/ATV, and although Sony/ATV is part of the Sony Entertainment group along with Sony BMG, each functions independently of the other.

19 is not getting royalties from Elliott, or Bucky, or Paris, or any other Idol finalist who signed with a record label other than those owned by Sony BMG.
