    Daughtry delivers
The “American Idol” finalist, set to play at the River Festival, discounts talk that he’s a grump.

….For the record, Daughtry says, he’s a pretty happy guy. That’s to correct the impression given by an article in Entertainment Weekly, which implied that Daughtry — in spite of a sold-out national tour, a multiplatinum album and the hit singles “It’s Not Over” and “Home” — is a self-absorbed crank….

Back home, local ‘Idol’ hits the airwaves

Former “American Idol” contestant Chris Richardson is back in Hampton Roads and making the rounds at local radio stations. He stopped by the WNVZ-FM (Z-104) this morning and is scheduled to drop in on Joe Fu’s show on WNRJ-FM (Energy 106.1) at 5 p.m. today.

“We plan to let him take over the station and play whatever he wants,” said WNRJ operations manager Jay Michaels. “It should be fun.”….

Coors triple bill dials back to 1980s radio

…Kelly Clarkson seems positively classic these days compared with most “American Idol” champs. Mezhgan Hussainy keeps ‘Idol’ contestants beautiful
Mezhgan Hussainy’s tools of the trade are lipstick, foundation, bronzer and a knack for making it look natural.

As the civilized world (starting with me) reads significance into the “American Idol” contestants’ every hand gesture and raised eyebrow, there is one member of the “Idol” family who lives as close to the contestants as it is possible to get without actually inhabiting their skin.

Walking the floor of the Idoldome at every show is the contestants’ (and the judges’) most important ally, the keeper of their faces à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the “American Idol” makeup artist, Mezhgan Hussainy, with whom I spoke after Wednesday night’s show….

LaKisha Jones commands the spotlight to the very end

…Initially aloof from the other contestants (she told one interviewer quite plainly that she hadn’t come here to make friends à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ although in the end she broke down and seemed to make some pals), LaKisha was a locomotive charging through the well-mannered, good-humored group. She was a force of pure determination every time she took the stage, to the point that on at least three occasions, most recently with Barry Gibb this week, she brazenly flouted the mentor’s advice….

‘Girls’ get ready to rock the night away

…Fergie looks to prove she can make it as a solo artist, Duff wants to shed her teen queen image, McPhee aims to work her way out of the “American Idol” shadow and Allen, well, she might just be trying to prove she can show up…

…McPhee knows a little about the public eye. She was runner-up on the biggest TV show around, “American Idol,” last season. Like so many other “Idol” runner-ups, the show was just the launching pad McPhee needed.

“After the season finale … Simon Cowell came up to me and was like, ‘You’re going to have to really stretch your wings and show your personality more, because I really don’t think America knows, like, really who you are,’ ” McPhee says on her video blog. “I think (this album) shows a different side of me, a more current side of me, a more young side of me.”

What could possibly put Blake Lewis in the same sphere as Charles Gibson? Friday’s Mariners game.

Apparently Charles Gibson is a baseball fan. Before leaving Seattle, he plans take in Friday’s Mariners game.

Don’t worry, he will be cheering for Ichiro. Gibson makes it a point to root against the Yankees at every opportunity. But how’s this for a bonus? On that very night, “American Idol” contestant Blake Lewis is singing the National Anthem — a perk of making it to the final three.

Local American Idol Blake Lewis Still, Somehow, in the Running

…However, the real local winner so far has been Blake Lewis from Bothell à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or, as he was sardonically dubbed by Rolling Stone writer Jenny Eliscu, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Blech Lewis.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Lewis has made it all the way to the top three, outlasting LaKisha Jones, who was booted last night. Despite his rather creepy kiss on the cheek for LaKisha last week, Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s feelings cooled rapidly after her last performance, judging from his eerily accurate prediction in advance of the results.

And what does Simon think of Blake? Not much, apparently. Not only can he not sing, but à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹his beatboxing is absolutely terrible!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m gonna have to side with Cowell on that one. Honestly, what is it about the American Idol viewers and their consistent inability to discern real star-worthiness from the puerile efforts of fame-hungry (but talent-poor) wannabes?

LaKisha on Kissing Simon: ‘I Would Do It Again’

Immediately spotlighted as one of this season’s early favorites, big-voiced LaKisha Jones, a single mother with a dream, rolled with the punches week after week as the competition grew more grueling and the genres moved further away from her diva-like R&B style. Last night, America voted and Jones just didn’t have enough to top beat-boxer Blake Lewis’s performance. So it was goodbye to American Idol after making it all the way up to the final four. Our ‘Idol’ is coming home

…The tour will mean at least several months of paydays for Richardson and the nine others. They were not paid for taking part in the Coca-Cola music videos seen on the show. “But we are compensated by the producers for performing live on television,” he said, although he wouldn’t discuss the sum.

Even as he was sent to the sidelines, Richardson heard talk of recording contracts, television appearances, tours and endorsements swirling all about him. One minute he was a kitchen manager at Hooters in Chesapeake. The next minute heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on national TV, blossoming into a singing star.

It would seem that appearing on “American Idol” is the start of something big in show business for the 23-year-old.

I suppose it depends how much you have to pay for cds normally.

CDs here normally cost from about $7( ) (most local artists’ and “Special Philippines Editions” of foreign albums) to about $12( ) (most imported CDs).

[Of course, they don't have Taylor's signature, which, perhaps, in itself justifies allowing myself to be divested of my precious $39 (CD money transfer fee; exclusive of shipping cost, which was so generously shouldered by dear Metta). ;-D]

    For reference purposes:

They asked her who she thought would win, and she was like “Best wishes to them all!” and the interviewer was like c’mon give us some more, and LaKisha was like “You want something more dirty? Well i’m not giving it to you.” I think if she let onto more of that personality earlier in the competition, she could have stayed a bit longer.

LisaB-Thanks for the articles as always, you are awesome! :)

I loved the Bo article/interview. I am so excited for his cd in the fall and will be one of the first in line to buy it.

I am anxious to see what Clive and the judges pick for next week. I’ll have to tape it again. My girls’ elementary school is having an art show that evening. We’ll get home in time to get the numbers though so Cecilia can vote like crazy for her Blake ;)

I have to say I am really disappointed in this year’s contestants. We’ve heard from several of them “we knew who the judges favorites are” “I knew I wasn’t going to win”, etc. SO WHAT!!! You knew the judges and TPTB didn’t want you to win–get over it. Pull a Clay Aiken/Taylor Hicks/Diana DeGarmo/Nicki McKibben/Constantine Maroulis and give us the “I don’t care what you weenies think–I’m doing this for the fans” performance.

No backbone this year. Yeah, I think that’s what’s missing.

I had to search hard to find that Jersey, seems Melindaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s homecoming is going to be pretty low key.

Interesting. I remember last year that Kat’s low-key homecoming looked kind of pathetic. Meanwhile, Taylor and Elliott looked like returning heros/music gods. I totally don’t want to get into the debate about why this happened (all power to Kat and her fans, but I’m just using this as an example of perception to the average viewer and not trying to call her a loser). Those hometown videos probably gave Taylor a little extra oomph going into the finales (and would have done so for Elliott had he not been elimnated the night they showed them). Kat just didn’t come over as looking as popular. If your hometown can’t even muster up a parade or thousands of people in a stadium/mall, you can’t be that great (is the general perception….Kat fans, I know it is not the reality…please no debates about why it was wise and it did leave her more rested so that was a good thing).

So, this year, Melinda appears to be getting the small crowds and little attention home-coming. Meanwhile, Jordin’s home town is dragging out every sports team in town for a rally. So, not only were her fans be there, but also the sports fans. Seems to me we know who is going to look like the returning hero/music goddess this year.

    Adjusts tin-foil hat.

Okay, forget the conspiracy theories. We don’t even know how much control AI/the towns/the Idol have over the schedules. Maybe these things are self-selected and Melinda wants to look all humble and un-loved (and maybe these events are bigger than they seem. Plus, wide-angle lenses and quick cuts can make crowds look larger than they are….who thought the AI audience was a mere 274 people?)

Let’s talke generalities. Do people think that the hometown visits have any effect on people’s voting patterns the next week? If so, what has a postive effect and what has a negative effect?

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Do people think that the hometown visits have any effect on peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voting patterns the next week? If so, what has a postive effect and what has a negative effect?

I think it definitely has an effect, and I think it’s part of the reason why we haven’t gotten a lot of backstory this year. I think TPTB are still smarting over last year’s results. After all, Taylor was the struggling musician from the down-to-earth Southern town, while Katharine was the pretty Los Angelino with the big house who only had to travel 10 minutes to go home. In the end, Taylor won, and I think TPTB probably attribute that in part to people being drawn to his backstory and being turned off by Katharine’s. I think that’s part of the reason we haven’t seen backstories this year–if Jordin is really the TCO, how many people are going to say “oh, her father is a bigtime football player? And she’s been singing since she was a child? Well, she really doesn’t need my vote then, does she?” Getting people invested in the contestants is great, but getting them invested in the RIGHT contestants is crucial, at least from TPTB’s standpoint. So I think that showing Jordin going home to visit her family becomes a bad thing if she’s returning home to a party thrown by the NFL. It’s a good thing if they show her hanging out with her mom, dad, and brother like they’re any other normal family in the world, and don’t ever mention the connections.

One thing that has been really bugging me about AI….WTF do the judges seem to beg for a “Glory note” on every damned performance?!?!

Not every song needs a big dramatic line to be a great song…..in fact, most of my favorites are very subtle……..”it’s the song stupid!”

Melinda has more subtleties and nuance in her singing than anyone in recent memory, but suddenly she’s “too predictable and boring”….WTF?!?!

  • Lisa B

I think the Homecomings have more of a positive effect on the contestant than the tv audience. Remember TPTB can edit a small gathering to look like a large crowd (Katharine supporters on the finale).

Re Tour colours, perhaps Katharine fans could use up the glut of orange glowsticks they purchased but weren’t allowed to use.

Or is there still a strange orange glow in LA?

In addition to local artists such as those mentioned a few pages ago, many regional and national performers will also appear at Dewey Beach’s Chickfest on Saturday.

Former “American Idol” soul diva Paris Bennett had to bow out. “So did Carmen & Camille from Canada,” Walls said. “They just wrote me saying their guitar player had to leave their tour to do some dates with Alice Cooper.”….

It’s all about the ratings and I think people nowadays want things to be “extreme” all the time. Almost as if it isn’t exciting or thrilling, then something is not good. And I’m okay with someone being known for a particular type of music. For example, if I am in the mood for soothing music, I am not going to play a Led Zeppelin CD. :jittery_tb:

Does she have a song that starts slow and has a build up in the middle, more often then not. Does she shake her head and throw her palm up to the roof while filling the songs with ACH!’s? Yes. Melinda is a great singer, but lets be honest, the only reason she doesn’t have a contract right now is because of her face.

Exactly. I hate when people are like top 40 sucks!!! While I admit most of it’s just the quick buck, there’s a lot of artists out there that are talented and make great music, and still are on the top 40. It’s been that way since the 1950s. Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean it sucks.

Melinda is paying the price for being too good. She nails it every week, and predictable=boring. Carrie Underwood had similiar complaints at this point in the competition. But, since melinda has gone on record saying the judges comments this past week about her not giving a “wow” performance was a wake up call for her, I think she’s rise to the occasion on Tuesday.

If true, that is just stupid. Here she is, one of the stars of America’s most popular television shows. A person who is there because people have voted her to stay on their televisions for the last 11 weeks. Television is a visual medium. Radio/CDs are not (and videos are rarely even shown these days). If she is attractive enough for TV, then she is attractive enough to make an album.

And, I don’t think that Melinda has an unattractive face at all.

Okay guys, let me add in IMO to what I said about the taste of people. I am not one of those top 40 sucks people. I just listen to some music that comes out and I wonder who thought it was good. And I am also talking about music that came out years ago. I hear some music now that came out when I was growing up in the sixties and just cringe.

As I said it is my opinion, not a standard that has been written in stone. Besides, isn’t there music you’ve heard and wonder how it got made?

  • LB2

Besides, isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t there music youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard and wonder how it got made?

Surprisingly, no. I believe there is an audience for any type of music. To me, it’s similar to the way I feel about some art. I may not understand a Picasso or a Pollack but I know there are people out there who do and who love it. So as long as it is appreciated by someone or means something to someone, I think it’s a welcome addition to the world.

Thus, I may detest Akon but as long as vegasdee loves him, I know why his music got made. It may make me slightly hokey or weird, but whatever.

DIVA TALK: Chatting with Color Purpleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Fantasia

    http://www.playbill.com/news/article/107979.html

IMO, the most interesting part of the article posted by LisaB is not the 1000th discussion of Summertime but this:

Fantasia brings her dynamic vocal prowess and a touching sincerity to the role that was created on Broadway by Tony winner La Chanze. In fact, the singer is currently offering one of the most exciting moments on any Broadway stage when she delivers her second-act epiphany, “I’m Here.” Fantasia builds the song to stunning climax of vocal and emotional power, and the audience à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ at least the night this writer attended à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ responded with a thunderous and lengthy ovation.

Also, she was offered the lead role without auditioning:

The Grammy-nominated singer was actually on tour with Jamie Foxx when she received the call about joining the cast of The Color Purple, the award-winning musical at the Broadway Theatre that is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, Roy Furman and Quincy Jones, among others. “We left the tour and came to New York, came to see the show,” Fantasia explains, “and we went out to eat after that with Scott Sanders and [director] Gary [Griffin]. They were sitting down and they said, ‘We think you’re our Celie.’ It was crazy to me because that was my first Broadway show. I’ve never been to a Broadway show, and I didn’t audition for the part. They just felt like the part was for me.

This whole statement really gives me pause. Tell me…who *is* the ideal visual for a singer then? Are we talking Britney who is more of a washed-up entertainer? Gwen Stefani who is more of the same? Hoochie Mama Mariah Carey? Or are we talking Alanis Morrisette who has an awesome set of pipes but isn’t conventionally attractive? I don’t think most music-buying public really gives a hoot what the singer looks like as long as they sound good.

Well…I call myself ignorant then b/c I don’t listen to much Top 40 or R & B. Maybe it’s an age thing? Maybe it’s a MTV thing? I just can’t believe that people after the teenage years would care what a musician looks like….it’s not like they are *seeing* them as they play the CD in the car.

Also…to bring this back to AI. Radname said Melinda was unattractive. To use a cliche…”beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and I find Melinda absolutely adorable.

If Melinda is such a great and flawless singer and has sung background for many established artists, why then is she not signed?

Maybe because she had a confidence problem or b/c she was happy being a backup singer? I don’t think signing is so easy as all that…or else Taylor and Chris and just about everyone who tries out for AI would’ve been signed already…that logic doesn’t work for me.

Did the Contra Costa reviewer express only his personal opinion about the concert, or did he go on to attack and stereotype the fans? I forget. Are we talking Britney who is more of a washed-up entertainer?

Britney is planning a comeback according to what I read at the new York Post. She’s hiring a trainer and hitting the gym.

Also, she appeared at the House of Blues in San Diego I think, lip synching through 3 songs in a 15 minute set just to “test the waters” ( so to speak ). Good music depends on your age, experiences, and preferences. I truly feel there is no single “right” type of music. I was driving my little brother and his friends to school this morning. Snow Patrol came on and the kid with the blue hair said “this song is creepy. Have you ever seen the video. It’s got this guy laying on the floor and he is asking you to lay with him and forget the world. Just creepy.” I started laughing so hard. I love this song but never thought about it from a kid’s perspective.

This means Milli Vanili should be able to make a comeback as well

Ummm, that’s going to be a bit tough. :-|

Melinda certainly doesn’t have the looks of Kat (and how in hades did she get dragged into this?), but she’s definitely not Quasimodo’s little sister. To claim that Melinda’s looks are the sole reason why she isn’t signed is a bit ridiculous imho. While she may not be signed to a major label and treated as a “pop princess” because she doesn’t have that marketable “pop princess” look doesn’t mean there isn’t a smaller label which would be more interested in signing her for her talent. Believe it or not, there is a niche market for really good singers regardless of their physical appearance.

Did anyone catch Billy Joel’s daughter singing on Jimmy Kimmel last night? I thought she was terrible but she said her father tells her she is great and he wouldn’t lie to her, lol Again, a matter of perspective.

This means Milli Vanili should be able to make a comeback as well :)

Britneys lipsynching to her own voice (which sounds exactly like it does on record, i’ve heard her sing acapella before and i was amazed anyone actually sounded like that) which is a lot different then lipsynching to some else and passing it off as your own singing (which is often what i do at my own house and pretend i’m this great singer) Britneys always lipsynced at concerts, i don’t get why its such a big deal now

I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt if she can sing the National Anthem live without lip synching.

So, I’m jumping a bit ahead here, but in terms of grandiose production, I’m wondering what this year’s finale will be like due to IGB. Is it supposed to be “smaller” per Nigel and co.?

And I have the unfortunate problem of a friend’s birthday falling on the 23rd. Last year his birthday fell on the day of the top 2 performance, and I excused myself early from a small dinner gathering saying that I wasn’t feeling well so I could go home and watch AI. (I am a horrible, horrible person.) This year it falls on the day of the finale, so I’ve taken matters into my own hands and am planning a group outing in honor of his birthday on the following Friday. :)

And here’s the concise version, but I had my first AI related dream last night: A bunch of celebrities were going to accompany a few astronauts on a shuttle mission and Kelly C and Taylor were among the celebs. There was a huge televised event before the launch, with singing and lots of confetti.

If music makes the top 40, it means it’s popular and people are buying. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s crap.

While I admit most of ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just the quick buck, thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a lot of artists out there that are talented and make great music, and still are on the top 40. When a singer has to cancel a whole tour because of a twisted ankle there’s something wrong. Get a stool! She isn’t a singer. She’s only selling tickets for people to watch her do her hoochie routines to backing tracks. I’ve seen high school cheerleaders dance better, but they don’t simulate sex on a bed in their routines.

Wow, doesn’t get much better than that than.

Anyone remember what Elliott and Taylor sang? I remember they were all great.

What an outstanding show that was.

    Anyway, I’ve moved on.

Looking back at the start of AI6 to where we are now..Jordin, Blake and Melinda are a pretty good final three in terms of demographics and styles.
I really think Blake’s the underdog and is going to have to spend hours re-arranging two new songs.
Next Tuesday’s show could be terrific.

Hi all………..I am going to ride sarahs coattails and mention Taylor. He did a radio interview in SF yesterday, and it is amazing how good his vocals are at 7 AM. He sang Runaround, JTFTW, and Take Me to the Pilot, with harp. It was on Star101.3 and will be posted for listening sometime but in the meantime, Gypsee has it to download. He did a good job on JTFTW but I still hold my breath on that one. It is a tough song to sing.

It was a great week. I loved watching the homecoming videos and having all three reprise one of their songs on the results show (won’t be time for that this year with Leona and all the contests they have to feature).

One minor correction, Kat sang BHACT on finals night and Billboard night (final 5). Clive selected “I Believe I can Fly” for her to sing for her third song on final three night.

Taylor sang “Dancing in the Dark”, “You Are So Beautiful” and “Try a Little Tenderness”. Elliott sang “Open Arms”, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“What You Wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Do For Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and “I Believe to My Soul”.

Blake can mingle in my pants if he so wishes

    Muahahaha. :-)

The Top 40 debate is very interesting to me. There are always going to be people who think that everything on the Top 40 is carp, and there will people who think that the artists on the Top 40 are the only talented artists out there, and no one else is worth listening to. Sadly, I have a lot of friends (ADULT friends) like that.

When I turn on my radio to the Top 40 station, I don’t like what I hear. Much of it is just too canned and formulaic for my tastes. Occasionally there is a gem, but it’s not for me. That doesn’t mean that all of it is BAD; it’s just not my thing. But interestingly enough, when I turn on, say, VH1, there is some interesting music to be found on their video countdown. But the interesting artists they’ve been showcasing have rarely hit it big, at least in the States.

So I guess I don’t get my panties in a twist when someone likes Top 40 music. I like some of it. But when someone ONLY likes Top 40 music and is dumb enough to think that the Top 40 is the final arbiter of who is talented and what is worth listening to…well, yeah, I’ll giggle and point behind that person’s back. Maybe that makes me a music snob. :-)

  • Lu

I’ve got all kinds of music set on my radio dial but mostly bounce back and forth between top 40 and ac stations – NOT country. I’ve started listening to more top 40 since Elliott is getting play there and find myself liking some of the songs a lot. Then there are others that I can’t listen to when I have my kids in the car – that irritates me – don’t like dirty music – no matter what genre.

LOL. No. We are going to have to set MJ up with a song chart so that people can easily check who sang what when(although, wiki is pretty good for that).

You are right about the first song (Clive’s pick), but Levon was sung by Taylor Final 24 and Final 2 nights (second song on Final 2).

So, the ratings for Performance night was 25.5 million and for Results night was 27.4 million. Results shows manage to snag 7.5% more viewers than Performance shows.

Last year, for Final 3 week, the ratings were 28.3 million and 27.8 million respectively (or a 2% rating drop from Performance to Results, 10% and 1% drop respectively).

So….what lessons are Nigel, Ken and Simon Fuller going to learn?

    1) Spend more time/effort into making the contestants interesting to shore up ratings on both nights. Select workable theme nights and diverse contestants.

    or

    2) Get Robin Thicke on speed dial so that you can talk him into giving you another pre-canned performance for next year’s results show. Contestants? What Contestants? Do you think if we shorten their songs to 1 minute on performance night we can fit in another song from Fergie?

I agree the musical tastes are subjective. I don’t find much on Top 40 to love, but of these:

    PINK
    AVRIL LAVIGNE
    TIMBALAND
    GYM CLASS HEROES
    FERGIE
    GWEN STEFANI
    AKON
    MAROON 5
    JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
    DIDDY

I like Pink in general, but then she can SANG and has a little bit of edge to her music. I like some of Maroon 5. I used to like Gwen when she was with No Doubt. I’ve never heard of Gym Class Heroes. The rest? Meh. YMMV.

I find that the songs I like enough to buy that get played on Top 40 can be usually heard on on AC or Hot AC and sometimes AAA radio. They seem to have cross-over appeal. John Mayer’s songs comes to mind. So, yes, not all Top 40 is “crap” whatever that means to individuals, but it’s often repetitive and limited in terms of genre, and in recent years, more fabricated than organic. Again, just my opinion.

As for Britney, she has never been a “singer” so much as an entertainer. I would think her fans expect to see her entertain them, which apparently she does. Of course, I could be wrong because I wouldn’t go to see her live if someone gave me the ticket for free. I don’t find her that entertaining and her “music” is just not my thing.

OK, this is too funny not to share. I know that there aren’t too many Clay fans here, it’s ok.

So, apparently some of the AI producers made some comments about Clay’s recent interview with Yahoo News where he mentioned that IGB could have done a better job if they focused more on education instead of just throwing money at hunger. One of them said Clay was getting on his high horse and talking like Jesus, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day but teach him how to fish and he’ll fed himself for life”

Watch these clips from Kimmel last night if you want to see Clay’s response to the criticism. He cracks me up!

“Other valuable consideration” maybe. The artist gets valuable promo in a high profile format, and American Idol gets big name artists to perform for nothing.

I’m surprised Pink agreed to have her performance on American Idol given what she has said about it. I’ll bet she agreed to for her recorded performance to appear for the IGB, not “just because”.

Exactly – would it not have been the correct move to, say, broadcast, via satelite one of Taylor’s performances of JTFTW in concert, rather than having “Pink”!??!? on the show in a pre-tape clip? Taylor is the reigning American Idol for heaven’s sake. Wouldn’t that have been a more interesting and ‘help their own’ segment? Geesh, I don’t get it at all.

AI has REALLY gotten away from the original idea of the show and has turned into a showcase for, like you said, who needs a sales boost arena. And while their doing that, how about giving a spot to ‘their own’ and not bring in performers who have no affiation with the show, who apparently don’t need much help anyway, and who never worked with the idols and for all we know, hate the show.

And it’s not even subtle – their greed and self-promotion is blatant.

Good luck to whomever Paula picks the song for this week. Shes not the best at that.

She can be good when she puts her mind to it.

Paula picked Clay’s finals song — MACK THE KNIFE. That was a good choice IMHO.

I’m not sure if I liked Clive’s choice of Dancing in the Dark last year. What did that highlight ?

However, Clive’s choice of Roy Orbison’s CRYING for Carrie and DON’T CRY OUT LOUD for Diana Degarmo were superb. Really showcased their vocals and range and ability to sustain the high note.

I know we’re not supposed to talk about radio play but indulge me a little today. Elliott was added at Z100 – BIG station in NYC. If you’re following Elliott’s progress at all this is a very big day for Elliott. That station add is a big deal. Couldn’t be prouder of my hometown guy!

  • LB2

    Two things:

    1. It seems like the contestants know their songs before they leave for their trip because Melinda said in an interview this morning that she knew all of hers but wasn’t allowed to reveal them. This actually makes sense because they would want to prepare in the little time they have (during traveling, etc.). I’m anxious to know the choices.

    2. Blake, on the radio this morning, made it seem like he didn’t really care too much about Randy’s criticism because it was contradictory to other things he said in the past. He imitated Randy’s confusing comments (to everyone’s extreme delight) to prove the point. So I think he’s going to do whatever he wants no matter what they say. This makes me happy because my attitude was that he should go out and do what he wants to do because no one can predict how the judges will react – they’re even more inconsistent than Jordin.

Lu – that’s awesome. Z100 is the biggest station in NYC!!! Congrats to Elliott.

RSF, I don’t think he does give a damn anymore. In an interview today, he said he thinks Jordin will win. So he’s not dumb. He sees what’s going on just like we all do.

A few years ago, Josh (AI2) said he knew exactly who would be the last two and who would win. Many ex-contestants say the same thing; they figure it out quickly. It doesn’t mean they don’t try their hardest (they still want to make it far and do enough to get a deal), but they know who the judges and producers are backing and know it’s hard to change that.

He said this morning that one of his favorite producers ever contacted him so he’s way excited and just hoping he’ll get signed.

Way easier to be negative….hmmm…Jordin finishes shrilling through a power ballad….

Randy: Yo! Check it out. Check it out. I can’t believe you’re 17, Dawg. 17! Wow! You blew your face of dude. That was hot! Yo! Paula, can you believe who great she is at 17? SEVEN-TEEN! Mariah wasn’t this good at 17. I can’t believe it. 17.

Paula: Jordin, you are like a beautiful tangerine. When you are on stage, you open up and there are all these wonderful pieces inside. And then the koala bears smile.

Simon: Simply fantastic. What people have to remember is that this is a singing competition. Not a beat boxing competition. Not a gimmick competition. You, my dear, can sing. You are what this competition is all about.

  • sarahinwv

How far did Nikko Smith get?

Nikko made it to the third round of the semi-finals, but was voted off on March 9 along with Travis Tucker.

Days later, Nikko got a phone call from the producers asking him to come back in place of Mario Vazquez, who left for “family reasons” ( we now know the real reason).

After returning, Nikko was dubbed “The Comeback Kid” by judge Paula Abdul after a performance of “One Hand, One Heart” ( on “musicals” night where almost everyone (Bo included) sucked. I still don’t understand why they thought of that theme night).

However, in the same week, Nikko was voted off the show, placing 9th overall.

Nikko’s version of Georgia is next to Taylor’s, the best version I’ve heard ( of course Taylor never sang it on the show ).

  • Kirsten

    Okay…now Melinda…

She is given some boring old show tune to sing which she handles in her usual flawless manner…

Randy: [sucks air in through his teeth] I don’t know dude. I mean, the singing was okay, but…there..just…wasn’t that “Yo” factor. I mean, do you know know what I mean? I just expected something different from you at this point in the competition. It was just a’ight for me. I dunno know.

Paula: I like your shoes. Uh…you know Melinda, you always sing well, but I want you to forget singing well, forget all the techniques and start remembering the oil filter. You know? Think about what the oil filter does for your car. Without it, your car wouldn’t work. You car needs to work. And right now, your car’s not working.

Simon: Melinda, Melinda, Melinda. Melinda, you know what I’m going to say. That wasn’t your best performance. What people have to remember is that this is more than a singing competition and you just proved that. Great vocals, but so what? You know, I have to give you credit. You’re a back-up singer. Most back-up singers never have the guts to sing out front because they know they don’t have what it takes. You gave it a shot. You did the best you could. I applaud that.

Sixty-Four Year Old American Idol Contestant Sherman Pore Releases à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢For My Lady Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ CD

LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts/ Capitol Records) – Every once in a while an American Idol contestant touches the hearts of viewers in a very special way. The latest contestant to pull off such a feat was none other than sixty-four year old Sherman Pore. Even though Sherman was thirty-six years over the American Idol age limit twenty-eight, he showed up at the auditions with a petition to be an American Idol contestant. Sherman then told a touching story of losing his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ lady loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ of twenty years to ovarian cancer.

A year later, Pore has recorded amazing standards CD entitled For My Lady Love, set for release on Z-Entertainment on May 22, 2007. Part of the proceeds from every CD will go to City of Hopeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s programs in cancer research, treatment and education, Pore has also been named as an ambassador for the organization.

In my never-ending quest to provide numbers — whether anyone is interested or not, eh? — here is the t-shirt math, according to The Musician’s Handbook (2003):

    $25.00 (cost to customer/fan)
    - $ 1.00 (4% taxes on average)
    = $24.00
    – $ 8.40 (35% hall fee; Clear Channel venues charge 40%)
    = $15.60
    -$ 5.00 (20% cost of goods)
    = $10.60
    -$ 1.00 (4% miscellaneous)
= $ 9.60 (profit to the artist or act; subject to management fees)

So why not some lipo on the Moobs…They were even an on-air joke this week.

  • MaryS-NJ

Why is Clay riding a horsie?

Kirsten, It’s incredibly hard to hold in my guffaws here in the office after reading your parodies. I wouldn’t be surprised if they prove to be true.

As for Blake, maybe he’ll remember that Chris Daughtry was supposed to be the winner (well, I mean for real – not just the revisionist history “winner”) last season, but Taylor won. Blake is more entertaining than Jordin. He has a shot, I think. I’m worried about Melinda – because I do believe she is this year’s designated Elliott.

    ETA:

Simon is (was) a pretty important music exec. Last year they wanted Chris to win because they knew heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d sell CDs and guess what, they were right.

That’s true. He is/was an A&R guy. He has a good idea about what will sell at a particular moment, but I don’t think it’s the real point of American Idol. It seems to me there are competing goals: (a) an entertaining TV show that kills all the competition in the ratings and brings in massive ad revenue, and (b) a viable Idol “product” at the end of it. They’re not necessarily aligned. What may make for a quick and dirty profit in terms of sale of UNITS and radio play may not be the same thing that “America” wants in terms of entertainment on the TV show.

If the PTB are concerned about the product, they should just stack the Top 24 with singers who fit neatly in a “marketable” box and not pick contestants like Taylor, Bo, Melinda, or Elliott who may not have conventional “pop star” looks or Top 40 sounds. It might cause the ratings to drop some, or a lot, but they’ll get the end result they want.

  • Kirsten

Why is Clay riding a horsie?

It’s a joke…evidently the snipers from AI — the ones who miss no opportunity to take a shot at any former Idol finalist who doesn’t toe the party line — suggested Clay was on his “high horse” for comments he made about IGB.

So Clay rides in on his high horse…

People who were there reported that he dismounted with ease. I doubt it’s his first time on a horse, he was way too relaxed. He isn’t at all uncoordinated. He ice skates well too. The loose ankles make him walk with out turned toes and he has really big feet but that has little to do with coordination.

    ‘Idol’ Finalist Visits Alma Mater

Back before she was an “American Idol” finalist, Melinda Doolittle was a Belmont University mascot. She wore a hot, sweaty bear costume and jumped around in the name of school spirit.

The tables were turned on Doolittle in a big way on Friday when she returned to her alma mater to film a segment for the hit show.

Thousands turn out to hear ‘Idol’ Blake at Westlake

Blake Lewis, “American Idol” finalist and favorite hometown son of the moment, attracted several thousand fans for a 45-minute concert Friday at Westlake Center.

Knees bouncing and right hand “air mixing” in his trademark dance style, Lewis performed five songs, including, Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane and Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity.” He also did an original song, “She Loves The Way,” and he backed up special guest Sir Mix-A-Lot on the rapper’s famous “Baby Got Back.”

After taking the stage, where he performed with local band Ari Sawkadoria, Lewis looked at to the crowd and said, “Seattle, say hello to ‘American Idol.’” And a cameraman on stage turned his lens to the cheering throng……

Thanks for explaining the Clay thing. I’ll try to watch the clip later if I can.

    And WTF is a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“designated Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

I said early this season that I thought Melinda would end up being this year’s Elliott. By that I mean she has a fantastic voice (i.e.: called “Masterclass”) but often gets faint praise for it compared to the others, is deemed extremely likable but you can just tell that the PTB don’t favor her for reasons that probably have to do with her perceived “marketability”.

She’s older, she’s old-school in her music preferences, in fact she picks “obscure” songs to sing. She’s admitted to being not “sexy” (although I think she is) and she’s not a teen princess or glamour queen. I’m not saying that I agree with the PTB, but I think it figures into their reasoning. All the judges genuinely liked Elliott last season, but they never treated him like he could win.

The difference is, Melinda is the front-runner vocally this season and there weren’t many bigger personalities (except Sanjaya?) or better performers (except, arguably, Blake) in the season. Jordin (IMO) has no star power but they can make her into a PopStar more than they can Melinda. Blake is considered “current” and has hot boy potential, although they probably like Melinda personally better than they do Blake based on some their comments.

If I’m right, she’ll get the “we’re proud of how far you’ve come from being a background singer” and nothing like – “see you in the Finals”. Or read Kirsten’s parody for Melinda. I think it will go down like that with respect to comments Simon makes.

I hope I’m wrong, by the way.

In my never-ending quest to provide numbers à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ whether anyone is interested or not, eh? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ here is the t-shirt math, according to The Musicianà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Handbook (2003):

    $25.00 (cost to customer/fan)
    - $ 1.00 (4% taxes on average)
    = $24.00
    - $ 8.40 (35% hall fee; Clear Channel venues charge 40%)
    = $15.60
    -$ 5.00 (20% cost of goods)
    = $10.60
    -$ 1.00 (4% miscellaneous)
= $ 9.60 (profit to the artist or act; subject to management fees)

At the concert I went to, Taylor’s t-shirts cost $30 – it adds up. His merchandising table was packed to the rafters after his SD show. Good for him!

I think we’ll see who “the frontrunner” is, by the lineup on Tuesday. I agree with the person who said the top 3 are lined up by their season vote totals. This certainly explains why the contestant singing first always goes home. The votes just aren’t there.

I can’t believe Simon picked that song for Jordin. I’ve never heard it before and it’s boring. Hasn’t he been saying she should do more contemporary songs? Yawn. :dry_tb:

  • xoxoyc

Blake singing “Roxanne”- I’m cringing already. I detest that song so that could have something to do with it.

Also for those people who are convinced that Jordin will win because Blake says so. The other contestants are not always right. One example: LaToya London (season 3- 4th place) in all her exit interviews said Diana DeGarmo would win.

Diana did not. So I personally don’t hold too much stock in what the contestants perception are. They are after all looking at it from their biased angle- just like thier fans are.

I don’t have the link but MJ put it in the homecoming update, Dave.

I don’t think Daughtry was pimped anywhere near Jordin. He was criticised quite a bit and didn’t get favored in getting the pimp spot like she does. Blake gets compliments from the judges at times but usually when he deserves it but gets plenty of critiques also. I don’t think anyone said that Blake knows for sure she’ll win, it’s just his opinion which a lot of us share. I’d rather Melinda or Blake win but we’ll just have to see. I certainly don’t expect Jordin to go home this week.

    Nola,
Simon really dug deep for this one. I’m impressed that he probably spent a good bit of time picking something for her. Unlike, Randy who is really setting Melinda up to do poorly. Whitney has a huge vocal range and sing really high. Mindy Doo sounds best to me in a deeper voice. ugh.
Oh, Sanjaya would look sharp with the hair do from Rose Royce and the feather headgear:)

  • t2

Simon is evidently completely committed to Jordin winning. It is the perfect song for her.

    It’s:
    1. Slow because does anyone remember Hey, Baby (ugh)
    2. Can be R&B’d up with no real effort
    3. Gives her the opportunity to fake cry again.

It’s a beautiful song and a lot of soulful singers have covered it. If she really is going to sing I Who Have Nothing, it could be a problem though because it’s two slow songs.

    Nola,
just watched it. yep, much better. I can see her putting the Mindy Doo twist on it. She is so incredibly talented and so nice. Imagine not winning because you are too good. Wonder what she would sound like doing a duet with Elliott. I would pay for that one. Two incredible talents. I like Blake because he does his own thing and is entertaining and I appreciate that-but she is such a perfectionist and has amazing phrasing. She can sing anything and I hate that they expect so much more from her. She also has been looking amazing. Hope she puts it all out there. Hope they put Melinda and Jordin back to back. But, newsflash-i bet they don’t. They don’t want to put a mature, seasoned talent right up to a voice that isn’t on the same level.

  • NOLA

wee, I will be sick if this gal loses because she is too good. LOL

  • Stefunny

Yanno…I’d rather hear the Whitney song than Jordin’s song. Just listened to snippets of both on iTunes and the Wish song seems a bit blah and one-note. I think Melinda has the opportunity to prove she *can* sing Whitney’s stuff and knock it out of the park. Plus there’s a recognizability factor to the Whitney song which can, possibly, help Melinda.

I’m eager to see what Mindy and Blake have chosen for themselves.
