    The man is all about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“imageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . He has a set à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“market templateà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  in mind and isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t flexible enough to move beyond that comfort zone.

    It’s even worse than that. He’s all about lowest common denominator, fast food, music-on-a-stick with cheese. I don’t think, from reading his production discography, that he has a clue about music at all…he seems to be a whiz at a narrow band of pop culture commercialism…sort of the mood ring/pet rock division of slam, bam, take the money and run marketing. Snake oil for the new millenium.

    If Simon were in the business of promoting artwork, he would be the king of “dogs playing poker”. If he were in book publishing, he would be responsible for celebrity tell-alls, harlequin romances and choose-your-adventure books.

    Which is rather apt, as AI is not a talent contest but a comedy/drama with a choose-your-adventure component.

    I don’t even believe that the judges have anything to do with choosing the contestants at all. It is the producers who make all the decisions and those decisions are based on television entertainment value not singing talent. You cannot make me believe that of all the thousands of people who auditioned we get the total crap that is the top 24. I wouldn’t go see most of these people if they were playing at a bar right across the street with no cover charge.

    First and foremost, AI is a television show. They’ve created a magic mix that brings in millions of viewers, and rightly or wrongly, singing ability is not the primary component of that mix.

    The thing I keep in mind is that, while the pimping and casting of “characters” rather than talented singers can be frustrating at times, without the producers’ machinations AI likely wouldn’t be the success it is…and appearing on the show wouldn’t then be able to give the contestants such an incredible boost to their careers. It all goes hand in underhand.

    Seraphina………good analysis, and then there is the other component. No competition!!!! Reality (so called) television is going to become more invasive because itis cheaper to make. NBC has already thrown in the towel as far as dramas and comedies and said they will go with game shows because they are cheaper to make.

    Thanks, mad…and yeah, sad isn’t it that networks are turning to reality TV more and more? Just because it’s cheap. AI and Survivor are about the only ones I can stand watching. The rest of the reality crop I try to leap over when channel surfing. ;)
