    Stems Fatale
Haley Scarnato, the latest ”Idol” evictee, talks about the secret to great legs, her wedding plans, what she would have sung next week, and more

What’s that sound you hear? Men around the country weeping because they won’t be able to watch Haley ”Legs” Scarnato get on stage in the shortest of shorts anymore. Turns out the leggy songbird couldn’t move to the Latin beat: The 24-year-old got the boot last night. One could even say she didn’t have legs after all. (Okay, I’ll stop creepily putting the word ”legs” into every sentence now. Until I ask her about them, because frankly, we’re not gonna talk about vocal range, people…)……..

    Diana’s destiny

There’s still time for the diva to polish her tarnished star

…For her solo work, Ms. Ross has a mere two platinum and four gold albums in a recording span of 37 years. With the Supremes, she collected a paltry three gold albums. She’s never won a Grammy.

That’s downright embarrassing, especially for such a well-known, successful multimedia star. Blame former Motown visionary Berry Gordy. During the label’s ’60s and ’70s heyday, when such legends as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Commodores and Ms. Ross (with the Supremes and without) were releasing landmark albums, Mr. Gordy was notorious for refusing to pay for the certification of his company’s releases. He ignored the Recording Industry Association of America, the organization that certifies records for platinum (1 million) and gold (500,000) in sales…

…Her guest spots on the monster ratings staple American Idol last month didn’t help push I Love You one iota. While Ms. Ross got good notices for her constructive coaching techniques with the show’s contestants, her performance of “More Today Than Yesterday” was a resounding thud…

Taylor Hicks keeps it largely concise and bluesy

…But Hicks & Co. made some good songs great and some lame songs good, and even punched up bad tunes by Rod Stewart and Traffic. More important, they held themselves to three shout-outs to the “Soul Patrol.” Damn impressive.

J Lo didn’t get the ‘Idol’ fire burning

So, how’d you like Latin week? Not so much?

The warm and loverly Coach J Lo tried her best to add some spark, but there have definitely been more exciting weeks on American Idol. The proceedings lacked that fire, that passion we’ve come to expect from this stage of the …

    Latin flubbers flop on ‘A.I.’

Despite coaching from the Bronx’s own Jennifer Lopez, a woman who could inspire a pile of bricks, the elite eight showed as much Latin flair as Taco Bell. As in the West Village Taco Bell with all the rats. Even Melinda and Lakisha fell flat, with helmet hair and a so-so Gloria Estefan rendition, respectively. Nevertheless, we love them and hope for more next week. There will be no more from Haley, however, whose skimpy shorts and zebra-print top could not keep her on the show. She joined Phil and Chris Richardson (paramour of Lauren from “The Hills”) in the bottom three. It’s no wonder: “You can’t do well in this competition,” Simon had said Tuesday, “Because there are much better singers.” Haley glared……

    SI’S ‘MOOBS’ SCOWL

SIMON Cowell was not breast pleased when a youngster at an African school drew a picture of him with manboobs.

‘Idol’ finalist Covington shows heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s best when he rocks

    …Unfortunately, as with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Nashville likes its newcomers to try a variety of styles. Covingtonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s weaknesses, such as his limited vocal range, is glaring on ballads like the tender family tale, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll Walk,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the corny oil-and-water romance tune, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Good.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

He sounds like the star he could evolve into on the funky Southern rocker à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t No Thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the upbeat depiction of a poor young couple finding joy in their life together on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Good to be Us.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ On those cuts and on the thunderous, rousing closer, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Bible and the Belt,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ about growing up with a devout mother and a disciplinarian father, Covingtonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gritty growl comes alive…

We win when kin can come– say that fast 5 times

    On the TV

I don’t mind Simon being honest about American Idol performances, many of which aren’t good, but often when he’s on camera and someone is singing, he’s not watching at all. He’s also petulant, dresses poorly and says AI is only about singing. Of course, it isn’t, you nitwit. Big stars are stars not only because they can perform but because they have charisma, are pleasant-looking and inspire. Of the ones left in the contest, I wish I could like LaKisha better because she has a good voice, but she has become too full of herself. Right now, I’d go with Jordin even though her parents couldn’t spell her name correctly — although Simon says he may quit if Sanjaya wins the contest, meaning I have to root for Sanjaya too. Blake and Chris don’t have a chance; they each look too much like Ryan Seacrest.

    ‘Forever Plaid’

Long before “American Idol,” long before “Star Search,” there were four singers with a dream. A big dream! A dream dressed in plaid! Plaid? You will be treated to some of the great music of the 1950s, combined with a hilarious stage performance when the St. Johnsbury Players present the Broadway musical smash, “Forever Plaid,” during the last two weekends in April. An ill-fated harmony group, Forever Plaid, has been given the opportunity of a life-time. Just as they were about to get their big break, they were killed. But a rare alignment of planets and converging forces of nature have returned them to Earth just long enough to perform the show they never had the chance to do in life. This musical takes you back to a time when harmony groups were in, like the Ames Brothers, the Four Aces, and so many more. They thrilled us with their versions of “Shangri-La,” “Chain Gang” and “Love is a Many Splendored Thing.”

    IDOL BANTER

Overlong? Wednesday’s who’s-out-this-week episode took the sadistic side of “American Idol” to a new low, stretching the inevitable lopping of one head to an excruciating extreme over a full hour, one that required more padding than Lindsay Lohan in a Santa suit. Simon Cowell can be harsh, but as this season of “Idol” continues its redefinition of heroes and villains (first, Sanjaya bad; now, Sanjaya good), host Ryan Seacrest is emerging as the kindest cast member à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ if you believe Nick Lowe’s admonition that you’ve got to be cruel to be kind….

He didn’t know who Saddam Hussein was, but I suppose in 1990 a lot of people would have been the same.

    Bucky Covington Goes to Camp

…”It’s a good thing to do, first of all,” Bucky, a former “Idol” finalist, told The Tennessean about his participation. “‘Idol’ has done a lot of good things for me?and if they need something, as long as I can get it in the schedule and it’s feasible, I’ll do it, especially if it’s something nice like this.”

Bucky, whose album debuts on Tuesday, said, “I’m going to just tell them about the things that I’ve learned on ‘Idol,’ like how to perform and the way the show helped me out, and I will perform for them. I would have never thought anybody would ask me to teach anything!” …

    J. Lo on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ : Like the Blind Leading the (Tone) Deaf

This was Jennifer Lopez week on American Idol, and the results speak for themselves. In case youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re too young to remember, Jennifer Lopez was a popular movie/music personality from the early à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢00à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, starring in movies like The Cell and Maid in Manhattan. Her hit records included Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Real and My Love Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Cost a Thing. Her singing voice was kind of like Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, but not as pretty, and if you heard à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Realà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for the first time today, you might find it hard to believe it got played on the radio a heck of a lot, but it did, for reasons later elucidated by the New York attorney generalà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s office. But suffice it to say that inviting Jennifer Lopez to spend an hour telling other people how to sing better is brilliant à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ like a Billy Joel driving lesson or a yoga class with Mo Vaughn. Could you hurry it up, Jen? Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m meeting Wesley Snipes later, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gonna help me fill out my 1040-EZ form. Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t worry, Halle Berryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s giving me a ride….

‘Meh’ joins ranks of little words that do grunt work

…However it got started, “meh” has given our culture a handy interjection for its default mood of smug indifference. So handy, in fact, that now we’re starting to turn it into an adjective.

“Nowadays ‘meh’ has become firmly established in [online] TV fan forums, very often extended to adjectival usage, as in ‘that episode was meh’ or ‘that was a meh performance,’ ” Zimmer wrote at Language Log.

Zimmer has also spotted several instances of “meh-ness,” a noun meaning the state of being “meh.” He found “meh-ness” in fans’ descriptions of the third season of “American Idol”: One singer “started out well but then faded into meh-ness,” one fan wrote. “Utter mehness,” said another. Last year, an “Idol” fan described a contestant as a “meh-ness to society.”

If you ask me, any word that gives English speakers more fodder for puns is a welcome addition to our language.

    Sanjaya is an ‘Idol’ dream

Syndicated columnist Eugene Robinson and local reporter Michelle Theriault both denigrate the performances of Sanjaya Malakar on “American Idol,” suggesting that the show’s producers must be appalled at his popularity. I doubt it.

I suspect that they are ecstatic about the enhanced ratings that controversy over his talent has produced. If they didn’t love controversy, why would Simon Cowell be a judge?

    For my money, Sanjaya

    Hair today, back tomorrow

Ratings giant “American Idol” is not above pinching a penny here and there, it seems.

Haley Scarnato, who was voted off Wednesday night, says she wore finalist Katharine McPhee’s old hair extensions from last season. But she’s not complaining about it…

Interesting articles today, Lisa B. My personal favorite was the one where they talked to Chris D’s teachers. Thanks. :smile1_tb:

Thanks for the article on “meh,” Lisa! My friends and I have been using it for a long time (LONG before TWoP), but we never knew where it came from. Maybe it WAS from “The Simpsons.” :-)

Funny you bring up Mr. Plummer again. There was a review in my newspaper this morning about him currently starring in a broadway play “Inherit the Wind”.

That same paper had a contest this a.m. to win 2 Taylor Hicks at the Beacon front row seats, along with a meet and greet and round trip transportation in a limo. I tried to enter, but their site was not working so I called and a very nice woman entered me manually. This is not nice, but maybe the site will stay down, they won’t advertise again and I’ll win. Since today is Friday the 13th and 13 is my lucky number…………….

  • Smiley

Little Debbi, I’ve got my fingers crossed for you!

Good luck, Debbi! Gah! Taylor needs to create a special meet/greet for his international fans. What are we, chopped liver? lol

    RE:

Taylor Hicks, the soulful crooner crowned the 2006 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner, classic rock staple The Steve Miller Band, and a host of hair and tribute bands will perform as part of the 2007 Kent Brown Toyota Concert Series on The Summer Stage at Tagà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s

Two other American Idols are also scheduled to perform at The NorVa à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Chris Daughtry, whose June 4 show is sold out, and Taylor Hicks on June 27.

Austin funk trio opened for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner Taylor Hicks at the Majestic in March

All I can say is Taylor’s statement that “American Idol” is fizzling out for him isn’t turning out to be true. Wherever he goes, that label ( for better or worse ), will follow him.

How exciting! Diane Sawyer was just reporting from Afghanistan. She’s been there all this week. On this morning’s show she said “Guess who I just ran into, Clay Aiken on his Unicef mission” and she showed some footage of Clay talking to kids at a school and he was wearing the Afghani men’s clothing with the long tunic shirt and pants they wear. He grew a beard for this trip too because it is traditional for adult men to have them.

Good luck winning those tickets, Little Debi. Friday the 13th might be your lucky day! I sure wish I lived near the Beacon. It’s such a great venue.

  • Little Debbi

Morning Metta. You know how much I “cough” love “cough” going to NYC. The only reason I decided to enter was the limo ride. No trains, subways, crowds, etc.

I might actually get two shows in one. Never thought I would have a chance to witness “the blog fight of the century”.

Metta, I just had a brainstorm. When the next Taylor chat thing comes up (have they given a new date yet?), you and JJ need to go on there and ask him this:

Do you like to watch beautiful women wrestling? And explain what you have planned for the evening.

I’d bet a lot of money that you would receive personal back stage passes and JJ might even get to sit on the man’s lap.

All I can say is Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s statement that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is fizzling out for him isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t turning out to be true. Wherever he goes, that label ( for better or worse ), will follow him.

Of course it will. For years and years and years. People only know him because of Idol, therefore to quickly identify him in news items it is natural to append “American Idol”, otherwise, believe it or not, the average reader will probably be sitting there thinking “Taylor Hicks? Who the heck is he? Where do I know him from?”

All former contestants have the Idol label added now and then. I just Googled for news items on Kelly Clarkson and the very first one, posted yesterday, began “Last week SI writer Richard Deitsch interviewed singer Kelly Clarkson for the magazine’s Q&A.The American Idol champ is a spokesperson for NASCAR.”

If Kelly Clarkson hasn’t “outgrown” the AI association in the five or so years since she won the title I think it very unlikely that Taylor would manage it in less than a year – if ever.

ETA: Thanks for the links, Lisa – today and every day. Much appreciated :smile1_tb:)

Did people see this post from Taylor re. yesterday’s chat that wasn’t?

    Thursday, April 12, 2007

I never claimed to be technologically advancedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Hey gang, I just wanted to apologize for the “chats” that haven’t happened twice now. I have been sitting at a computer twice now (a very nice MAC too!) to answer all the questions you might have but I have been unable to log on to the network. We aren’t really sure what the problem has been. The first time I think it was because my hotel was blocking or “firewalling” my entrance into the chat room. And today, I think it was because we were traveling on the bus and the internet connection was spotty. But, for whatever reasons they were, I was bummed I couldn’t directly connect with everyone.

I promise I am going to make this work in the next few days again! Maybe we will do some practice connections before hand. Please check back to the sites to see when I have rescheduled my “chat” and remember I don’t type that fast so don’t go too hard on me with the questions. ;)

steve: He also went to the Chris Daughtry concert last night, you can read about it on his blog.

Sligh is BIGGER than Michelle Pfieffer!!!!!

“One of the guys that worked there asked us if we were going to see Daughtry, since he was playing in Charlotte tonight. I didn’t even know the band was there tonight, but I was interested. Then the dude said the show had sold out in 16 minutes, and there weren’t any tickets. Now, this is where I am going to show that I am a bad person: but I decided I wanted to see how big a celebrity I was by going and seeing if I could get me and Don in for free to a sold out show.

Short answer: Yes. I am. Free tickets, baby!!”

Rumour has it that Michelle couldn’t even get into a Daughtry concert in SF when she was willing to pay. Poor Michelle.

And today, I think it was because we were traveling on the bus and the internet connection was spotty.

You know I was thinking it’s strange that Taylor was late to the chat because he was taking care of some things at the venue and then “traveling on the bus” when he finally tried to get on the chat 45 minutes later. How far could the hotel possibly be from the venue? Where was he “traveling” to? Lancaster isn’t that big. I wonder if he just didn’t want to answer any more questions about his underwear. :dry_tb:

I would like Sligh to get me VIP seating for Taylor’s Sunday night show so I don’t have to wait outside in the cold, wind and rain. Call me, Chris!

Elliott Yamin is here May 23, the night Sanjaya is crowned . . . I mean, the next winner is announced.

Why do I like this quote? Oh yes, it’s the “Sanjaya is crowned” foreshadow.

I guess it’s safe to say Elliott won’t be in the audience during the AI finale . Good for him..I’m hoping Taylor comes down with a case of laryngitis and won’t be able to show up either. Just like Fantasia during Season Four’s finale…

Lil Deb, don’t encourage JJ and Metta. I would like to continue my Taylor high from Tuesday at the beacon. Not spend the night separating two women, GORGEOUS as they are, wrestling for his attention..

Since we were on the naughty trend this morning. I was looking for corny country videos yesterday for next week’s theme and came across this one. I thought that it was a shame that Haley is no longer on the show because I’m sure some of the male viewers would have enjoyed her singing it wearing one of her victoria secret outfits.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_kL3XydzBo

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

Haley could have worn a pair of Daisy Dukes. What a shame she missed that opportunity.

Anyone see her on the Tonight show last night. It was kind of comical, actually. Leno asked her some questions and that “announcer guy” (In a world…) interpreted her answers.

  • Lisa B

I personally think that Haley’s attire was ok, I’ve seen girls go clubbing with less than she had on.

If you’ve got it why not flaunt it.

She at least didn’t have to spread her legs to get attention like someone I could name.

I just wish Simon would tell Lakisha to put her jugs away, one of these days they’ll pop out and knock someone for six.

    Chris Daughtry wows Charlotte

After canceling a show in Tallahassee, Fla., earlier this week due to illness, Greensboro’s Chris Daughtry made a triumphant return to the stage Thursday at Amos’ Southend…

…His departure from the stage seemed a bit abrupt after only nine songs in 40 minutes. He could have stretched out his set with one of his many “American Idol” covers, but chose to distance himself from the reality series by only performing songs he’d written or co-written for his debut album. That sort of uncompromising spirit is one reason fans are drawn to him.

After a five-minute break — during which recent “Idol” castoff Chris Sligh (of Greenville, S.C.) entertained fans near the club entrance, from where he watched the show — Daughtry returned for a single encore: “There and Back Again.”

With his band headbanging to its metallic groove, Daughtry made bulldog metal expressions as he sang one of the album’s heaviest tracks. In that moment, he seemed more like a graduate of rock n’ roll high school than a member of “American Idol’s” class of 2006. That’s probably the impression he wanted to leave fans with.

J Lo’s ‘rightness’ word use sparks off Scientology rumours, again!

It seems that pop diva Jennifer Lopez is considering turning towards Scientology.

Lopez’s ‘American Idol’ appearance on April 11 has fuelled rumours that the singer might be taking Scientology seriously.

When asked about her comments on the judges’ critiques of the contestants, Lopez said that in contrast to the harsh statements of Simon Cowell, she believed that “concentrating on the rightness brings more rightness.”

The word “Rightness” appears frequently in the glossary of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard…

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hmm, what would have cost him to go see DAUGHTRY, twenty bucks or like some of Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s concerts, FREE to begin with..He does not feel DAUGHTRY is worth twenty dollars.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

What an incredible rude and stupid thing for Sligh to say, but not surprising in the least, considering his track record for lame comments.

Just to clarify, Sligh did not say that in his blog. That was Sexy’s interpretation of the fact that he got in free. I have to disagree with that interpretation, given the fact that the concert was sold out already so he couldn’t have paid $20 in the first place.

Yep Metta. I’ve been to that restaurant. It’s about 5 minutes from here. It’s a Belgian Bistro. We weren’t impressed, but it’s in an upscale neighborhood and is one of those “high class hoity toity” places. Nothing against that if the food is good, but I don’t see any reason to pay too much money for mediocre food.

Just think Metta, if you weren’t trying to get everyone those cd’s, we could have actually “gasp” watched Taylor eat food. That would have made some glitter people green with envy.

His departure from the stage seemed a bit abrupt after only nine songs in 40 minutes. He could have stretched out his set with one of his many à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ covers, but chose to distance himself from the reality series by only performing songs heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d written or co-written for his debut album. That sort of uncompromising spirit is one reason fans are drawn to him.

It’s amazing how much Chris can get away with snobbing AI. Selling cds for the machine does come with it’s perks..

I posted it and it was done more in light of Chris S sense of humor. He wanted to see if his “FAME” from being on AI could get him into seeing DAUGHTRY FREE despite the fact that the show was sold out. Just because a show is “sold out” does not mean one cannot “cop” a ticket..They may just have to pay a very high price. Chris S. just wanted to see if he had any real clout..

EUROVISIONà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢S GOT AMERICAN IDOL BEAT

As I sit here in Moscow and read about Sanjaya and American Idol, I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t help but be amused. Here in Europe (yes, Moscow is part of Europe. At least it is for this blog à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ but more on that later), singing and controversial performances have long ago been elevated to an art form known as the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held next month.

The Eurovision was first held in 1956 in Switzerland with 14 countries participating and the winner selected by a jury (surprisingly, it was Switzerland). The Eurovision has since become more democratic in voting — now by viewers calling in and sending text messages — and the definition of Europe has expanded — 42 countries will compete this year, including Israel and Georgia.

Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s at stake? The winning country hosts the Eurovision (and the assumed tourism euros) the following year. OK, so ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not the Olympics. But letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s face it –Andorra, Malta, Albania, and Belarus donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a shot at 2016 anyway, so hosting the ESC isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t such a bad consolation prize……..

    FCC Fines Broadcasters Millions

After waiting for more than a month for the final settlement to be announced, the Federal Communications Commission released the final details of the payola settlement Friday morning.

According to the settlement, four of the countryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s largest broadcasters are paying the government $12.5 million in fines in response to allegations that they accepted money and gifts to play certain artists, a practice known as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“payola.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

This is the largest collective fine in the history of U.S. broadcasting. Officials declined to say when Clear Channel Communications, CBS Radio, Entercom Communications and Citadel Broadcasting will pay.

On top of the fines, the radio companies voluntarily agreed to launch a new program for independent artists…

…In addition, companies are supposed to maintain a database that identifies any item they receive from a recording company worth more than $25; they are also going to establish a payola hotline to report violations. The companies also are required to appoint compliance officials in the home offices as well as people in local offices throughout the country to address the issue…

Sound Check: When times were cosmic
New Riders return to the good old days of psychedelia

…Today, Clive Davis may be known principally as the Svengali behind à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢sà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ slew of ready-made recording artists, and the head of J Records, but Davis has a great track record prior to all of this saccharine nonsense, and it includes signing the New Riders to a Columbia recording contract back in 1971. (Davis, back then, was a real innovator and had a positive impact on the careers of artists as diverse as Miles Davis and, later, Aerosmith.) The eponymous NRPS album is now rightly held to be a classic and received an impeccable remastering from Columbia/ Legacy a few years back. It was followed by a string of pretty much impeccable records throughout the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢70s and early à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢80s, with Dawson taking over the reins in full after Nelson and Cage signed off in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢82…

http:// I did not remember Simon telling Taylor that it was not just about the voice but the looks.
    _______________

I don’t recall him commenting on Taylor’s looks either.. He did disagree with Paula when she interjected the words personality and good character though, after he made the statement it was not just about the vocals…
The look of his face indicated that he did not think much of Taylor’s personality or his character.
I thought to myself at the time, how do you know what his personality is like or his character… I think it was a DUMB statement..
Also, seeing both Taylor and Simon frequently looking at the camera though indicated to me that it was ALL staged for our viewing pleasure..
I will never believe that Simon thought that Taylor should be singing background.
Ironic now that they do have a background singer on board and that they are pushing her to step up to the plate…. To be perfectly honest, I find it ALL quite amusing…

His glance to the side indicated that. But, by Levon, he had changed his mind? That was an awful big switch. And he even said he thought Taylor should be in the competition. I do agree with you that there was/is alot of manipulation going on behind the scenes, and someday we will find out how much. I have my theory. Little did Simon think that Taylor would actually win it though.
This season, with Sanjaya’s popularity, he had to concede that he knows nothing about this competition.

    From VFTW’s hompage:

As if having Kevin Covais guest star on her album wasn’t proof enough, TMZ.com reports that Paris Bennett is indeed a Worster who is voting for Sanjaya. Paris said on the Tone E Fly Morning Show in Minneapolis that Idol is a “joke” and that she and a few other contestants are helping VFTW screw with the show. “We want to see him [Sanjaya] win because it’ll kind of prove that ‘American Idol’ is kind of losing its taste,” says Bennett. Fans of VFTW may remember that we weren’t fans of Paris last year at all, but if she’s supporting us, we’ll support her. It’s always nice to see past contestants agreeing that the show is a joke. • Little Boy Blue

The Taylor Hicks audition seems to have certain parts cut out and not every scene was shown.

I can remember two auditions last season where the judges specifically asked the auditioners to sing ANOTHER song in addition to the first one they presented.

One was Taylor Hicks and the other was Paris Bennett.

Paula said — “I didn’t expect that honestly. You definitely can sing… can you give us 20 seconds of something else ?”

Randy — “C’mon dude shake it out, shake it out”

By which Taylor did SWANEE RIVER ROCK.

Randy then remarked — “WOW, You know I really like you man. You’re a little Ray, that’s a very good throwback.”

To which Simon replied with his famed — “My problem is it’s not just about the voice, and you proved that.”

then the argument ensued where Simon said three things :

    1) In response to Randy, he says he doesn’t believe Taylor can be commercial ( and of course, Simon is ALL ABOUT COMMERCIAL, as in — SELLING RECORDS ).

    2) This is a man who should be singing backgrounds, not in the spotlight. ( Randy was incredulous and said — “C’mon, backgrounds moving like that ??!!”

( I THINK THE SCENE WAS CUT AT THIS POINT )….

( Taylor then remarked — some of these folks probably don’t know who Joe Cocker is, which leads me to ask myself how Joe Cocker got into the picture, since Taylor did Sam Cooke and Ray Charles. The previous scene was probably cut — something related to Joe Cocker ( did Taylor sing a Cocker song as well ?) ).

    3) Simon then said to the other two — You are not going to put him in the finals to be judged by the public.

    ( Randy protested — that’s not true, that’s not true ).

I find it ironic though, that inspite of Simon’s dislike for Taylor, some of the best praises for Taylor’s vocals came from Simon himself. Not just on one occasion, but on many.

Count them — LEVON, LIVING FOR THE CITY, TROUBLE, SOMETHING, IN THE GHETTO, YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL ( Simon actually applauded here ).

All in all, I still believe that Simon doesn’t want Taylor to win mainly because he isn’t a fan of his particular genre, not because he thinks Taylor can’t sing.

Why is Paris Bennett hell-bent on “takin’ down Idol?” Does she think she should have won? Fifth ain’t bad, you know.

    That piece puzzles me:

“We want to see him [Sanjaya] win because it’ll kind of prove that ‘American Idol’ is kind of losing its taste,” says Bennett, “it kinda isn’t going for talent anymore and more for popularity.”

American Idol is losing its taste? It isn’t going for talent? What “it” is she talking about – the viewers. Granted, the judges and producers picked the top 24, but after that “it” is the viewers voting. This is real “follow the herd” thinking.

  • madaboutu

LBB, I always thought that Taylor made his Joe Cocker remark because of his quirky moves while doing Swanee River Rock. Though Randy didn’t mention Joe Cocker, I felt that in Taylor’s own mind that was who he was channeling.

During the auditions when it’s 2-to-1 judging, like in Taylor’s case, I always feel like it’s a bit staged for drama. The cynic in me believes they set up (planned) some of the contestants as early frontrunners and others as underdogs, based on the judge’s voting and banter.

I have to say, I’m kind of surprised that Paris was quite so “forthcoming” if that’s what you want to call it, about her reasons for voting for Sanjaya. It’s one thing to say “I’m voting for Sanjaya” it’s completely another to say that she’s doing it to be subversive. Not very diplomatic. Chalk it up to being 17, I guess.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Simon’s critique was that Taylor isn’t commercial. He pretty much persisted with it throughout the competition. He also complemented Taylor on his voice many times (but less than Chris’ and Elliott’s).

I think Paris’ audition was the best one in season 5.

Keep Season 5 talk to what the Idols are doing in the PRESENT. No rehashing of last season, please.

    Sorry MJ…

  • Lisa B

Sorry Coco he just doesn’t have the ‘chops’ for it.

  • Shannon

I loved John Stevens version but I think Blake could pull it off in a totally different way. But I personally would like to see him do Keith Urban’s “Jeans On”
I would also like to see Jordin do Taylor Swift’s “Tim McGraw”

  • MaryS-NJ

Granted, the judges and producers picked the top 24, but after that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is the viewers voting.

and one way the viewers can make their feelings known is to abstain from voting or more to the point, abstain from watching. I can’t quite bring my self to stop watching, and I may be unhappy about things related to AI politics and its treatment of certain alumni, but I won’t be voting subversively or any other way. I won’t be voting at all. My favorites will have careers when this is over, but I’d rather they get my support and money than the weasels at 19.

    Team Indifference!

My reason for asking had more to do with Simon getting what he wants in Sanjaya. So, why is he not pushing him. Some keep saying that Simon is an honest person but is he really honest or does he just say what will benefit the flow of the show not the contestants? No one here is seriously going to tell me that Blake and Chris is cuter than Sanjaya and are much better singers.. If Taylor proved to Simon that it’s more than just singing, then why did they allow Lakisha, Melinda, Chris S. and Sundance into the competition. Do you guys really believe that they are more marketable than Taylor? Or did they get through to be used as underdogs or gimmicks, like Taylor, for the show?

This is just an open discussion. It’s not meant to pit one idol against another but to more focus on the show and it’s dynamics. Plus, it a slow Friday..lol

  • sexygirl

Granted, the judges and producers picked the top 24, but after that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is the viewers voting.

But some viewers do listen to the judges, especially Simon. IMO, this season seem to reflect that more than any other. I think that Sanjaya is the only one who has beaten the odds. So they kinda gave up with him. What I find funny is, Chris has been receiving a lot of praises frm the judges but he has been in the bottom three within the past two to three weeks. Their praises aren’t helping him much.

  • jersey

*raises hand* I think Blake is cuter than Sanjaya (sorry Sexy).

  • AFan

The audition process is nothing but entertainment. The producers pick who they want to get through to Hollywood before hand and the judges just have to play their parts. I’m sure there are discrepancies here and there, but for the most part its pretty much a done deal for the people they want to go through. I may even go as far to say that they know who will get into the top 24 at auditions.
Taylor was a shoe in to the top 24 and probably even the top 12 from day one. Why? Because he was a 28 year old guy with gray hair that sang old soul. What a perfect character for this show. And now Sanjaya is the new character. The one that will probably win. As for Paris’ remarks, I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I can see how she would have a cynical outlook. They molded her into a little character as well and didn’t sign her. Also, she was good friends with Kevin Covais who was also kinda screwed from the beginning. She’s 18 years old and is smart enough to realize what this show is all about. She’s not contractually obligated to kiss their ass anymore so why not say what she feels. No harm done.
ETA: Chris R and Blake are cuter than Sanjaya.

  • Shannon

My opinion – Blake and Chris are both cuter than Sanjaya and better singers.

  • jersey

Afan, I don’t disagree with what you said. She has every right to say what she feels. I was just surprised she did, that’s all. Most ex-idols who are asked (JPL, Lisa Tucker, Kim Locke, Ace, Anthony Federov among others), all pretty much toe the party line and say he shouldn’t be there etc., whether or not they personally find it amusing. So, like I said, she has every right to feel it and say it, I’m just surprised she did.

  • Kirsten

AFan: I may even go as far to say that they know who will get into the top 24 at auditions.

I have heard that is true. I’ve read a few reports from failed contestants (and granted, it may just be bittercakes), but they say that the cameras spend more time following the successful contestants than the failed ones. If you think about it, for instance, Hollywood tends to have about 150+ contestants…150 camera crews would be tripping all over themselves (though, that is probably one of the reasons for the group numbers). So, they focus on who will likely have a long-term story. There are probably a few back-ups in case criminal records/identify fraud takes out a few of the characters they have cast. By the time they get to the S/P/R auditions, they contestants have been fully vetted by Ken and Nigel.

As for Simon not backing Sanjaya…well, he was pretty awful in the semis. Simon does include singing talent in his calculations (it may not be weighted highly, because pro-tools can change things up). Simon, I feel, also lacks imagination sometimes.

I would say that Sanjaya is the cutest, but Blake is more attractive. If that makes any sense.

  • MaryS-NJ

    Hee!

I think Sanjaya (like Wil Makar and David Radford) is a pretty boy. I think Blake and Chris are cute, boyish men. I think Chris Sligh is a cute, boyish, chubby, slightly quirky man.

I think Ace is a pretty man. I think Daughtry is a rugged-looking pretty man. I think Taylor, Bucky, Elliott and Bo are handsome, rugged-looking, slightly quirky men.

I like handsome, rugged-looking, slightly quirky men. Your milage may vary.

    ETA: Happy Birthday Chris Sligh!

  • Kirsten

sexygirl: Some keep saying that Simon is an honest person but is he really honest or does he just say what will benefit the flow of the show not the contestants?

Simon is a free spirit. He is not afraid to contradict himself, even within the same show. One contestant can be told that they should have modernized a song while another will be chastized for having the audicity to modernize another song. Sometimes it is “a singing competition” and sometimes it is “more than just a singing competition”. Simon is wonderfully unconcerned with looking like a gigantic hypocrite.

Simon is flexible in his opinions. If he likes an artist, they can modernize, sing off-key, wear ugly outfits and pick indulgent songs. If he does not like them, even when they perform well, he will find some oddball thing to complain about. It is all a means to an end for him.

Sanjaya’s face skeers me.I keep thinking those two big black bushy things above his eyes are going to start crawling. He does not actually smile he just pulls his lips back, in some distorted way, and shows you his teeth. Maybe he is trying to show his mom he is being a good boy while he is away from home and doing a good job brushing.

    One thing about Simon..
You can always bank on him being consistantly inconsistant..

I think that is direct hit on the nail head with a hammer! The part about quitting if Sanjaya won was just to draw attention to a boring season with lower ratings.

I vote for number 2à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Simon IS A GIGANTIC HYPOCRITE. He will say anything to bolster his own manipulative opinions even when it contradicts something he has said previously.

I actually think that Simon can be a hypocrite because of his strong opinions. I think he has to play the puppet a lot and you can see it in his face. But I also think he is being manipulative at times. I think he’s also an honest guy as his interviews have shown. He’s the first one to admit that he can smell money from a mile away. He made a career out of molding people into popstars. That’s where he’s coming from. There’s obviously a hidden agenda behind the judges words but I think Simon has integrity for the most part.

did i seriously just read a transcript of taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s audition?

    seriously???

lol, I would call it an investigative report.

What I find so funny is Paris expressing her feelings this early in the game. While watching Dr. Keith Ablow this week, I noticed that all the Idols except for Niki pretty much agree that AI is fair in it’s meanness to the contestants. I was surprise to see her actually go against the flow. They had someone from every season represented, by the way.

Here is another something to think about. Do any of you feel Blake and Chris share the same voters and that will eventually cancel out one or the other the way some felt would happen to Melinda and Lakisha? Is that why Chris, who is receiving just as much praise from the judge as Blake, has been in the bottom three twice so far?

Don’t worry Jersey, I will not hold it against you for thinking Blake is cuter…LOL

  • madaboutu

Question about season six contestants. Will the rest really step it up now, or will we see alot of nerves from this group? I have only observed them singing a couple of times and don’t keep up enough to know their habits or character.

  • shar

Mad, I think Melinda,Lakisha and Blake seem to have fantastic control of their nerves and their voices. Chris and Phil seem to be vulnerable, Jordin is iffy and Sanjaya is way past nerves into the next universe and laughing all the way there. Did I forget anybody?

  • madaboutu

KOST just gave away tickets to HOB for Taylor, so I guess they are through with those to the Grove in Anaheim.

Blake could really do good with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“King of the Roadà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..after watching it last nite with my fellow chatters I think Blake could do it more Justice than my heartbeat JAYA couldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Blake can jazz it up and do his thAng.

I agree, Coco. John Steven’s version was incredibly boring. Blake could absolutely do more with it. I hope he picks a fun country song to do and not a slow one.

I think Blake should be one that the producers/judges are pushing even though he isn’t for the most part. He & Jordin are the most marketable imo. I do think that Blake & Chris R share a certain # of fans but think less are splitting the vote as time goes on.

  • emeralgem

Sanjaya is way past nerves into the next universe and laughing all the way there.

The only reason I would want Sanjaya to win is to show AI that America votes — and not them. However, I really would like to see Jordin win, but I’m not voting for anybody.

  • Botay

I am streaming KOST.FM and they said the latest from Taylor coming up!! And it is rush hour in LA..lots of listeners..lol!

listening to taylor on KOST NOW WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Little Debbie, I totally agree with you about Waterzooi. I have been there twice. Although trendy for the local upscale crowd, I did not enjoy it at all. There are so many better restaurants in another upscale community very near GC on the south shore.

  • sammy

Unless someone actually believes Sanjaya is the best, it would be more unfair to a deserving contestant than to AI to vote for Sanjaya just to “show AI”.

Also, I got my copy of this week’s EW with the top 8 on the front. I’m pretty sure the article is the same as what is posted at ew.com, but I’ll flip through it and see if they included anything not available online…

db…………is that for real? Oh my, the life of a celebrity. No wonder Taylor said he felt like he had a camera up his you know where, following, following…….
There is a lowkey place that lots of stars go in Santa Monica, and they dress scruffy and the guys always wear baseball caps. Some can’t get away though, like Adam Sandler. He has such a strong face that you can’t miss him.

  • db*

Too late to edit this into my previous post, but there’s nothing else AI related in EW.

    ETA:

Oh, I certainly hope those pics are real. As pathetic as it sounds, they’ve made my evening – as did Taylor’s comment about the placement of Hal the camera. Sometimes I have the humor of an eleven year-old boy. That being said, I don’t envy the life of a celeb in this respect. Although it comes with the territory, I’m sure it’s not enjoyable (unless you’re a fame-whore).

  • givein

Commercial or not? We don’t see what the judges see so let’s be fair. I love Blake but each time they show him full view I cringe. He looks like a jockey! Don’t forget that’s the view the judges have all the time.

  • madaboutu

givein………….height doesn’t matter. Like I’ve said before, half the guys in Hollywood and in music are 5’8″ or under. If AI thinks they can get Blake to become the next JT, he will be.
