‘Idol’ winner Hicks minds his manners
Singer takes sunny view of current tour

Over the phone, Taylor Hicks comes across as someone who’s as careful and determinedly upbeat with his comments as a politician on the stump.

“There’s all kinds of people to see and music to play. It’s really cool,” says Hicks of life after “American Idol.”

Asked about his current tour, which lands at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on Sunday, he offers this: “It’s been grueling, but it’s been rewarding, too, to see all the fans.”….

And for his farewell: Take that, Howard Stern

Poor Howard Stern à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ what’s he going to rail against now that it’s bye-bye-ah Sanjaya?

At least the longshot “American Idol” wannabe Sanjaya Malakar went out Wednesday night with flair, flair, flair, tweaking a line in his teary-eyed farewell version of “Something to Talk About” as a parting shot to Stern and the rest of the Sanjaya-naysayers, crooning that they’ll now have “something to talk about, besides hair, hair, hair.”…

Sanjaya Malakar: Big primpin’ no more
The controversial contestant bids a sad farewell to ‘Idol’ but believes he won some real fans.

    AND so it ends.

The Sanjaya saga, destined to go down in “American Idol” history as one of the show’s great subplots, has run its course. Sanjaya Malakar will forever stand alongside such storied also-rans as Kellie Pickler, Constantine Maroulis and Carmen Rasmusen. But the fantasy that this hula-dancing 17-year-old could topple the “American Idol” industrial complex is over and dead…

    Weak songs hurt country-rocker Covington

    …Bucky Covington

“Bucky Covington,” Universal Music. Reviewed by Ken Barnes, USA Today.

Bucky Covington’s image on “American Idol” last year was “the Southern rocker,” but there’s pretty much only one place for Southern rockers to go for a career these days.
So we’re now presented with Bucky Covington, country singer, with a healthy chunk of rock thrown in (as with many modern country albums). He acquits himself ably in the singing department, with an appealing husky edge to his voice.
But despite blistering lead guitar that nearly salvages some routine rockers, the songs — full of stock bucolic images and far more nostalgia than you’d expect, or want, from a twentysomething artist — are the weak link overall.

    Brian McCollum’s music weekend

    Taylor Hicks

“American Idol” runner-up Chris Daughtry has already proved far more viable in the real-world music biz than this Georgia pap-soul crooner, whose championship status on TV doesn’t appear to be translating to longevity on the record charts. While Daughtry’s record rolls strong in the top 10 — the year’s best-seller behind Norah Jones — Hicks’ album has plummeted out of the top 200. Still, like any of the “Idol” stars, Hicks retains an intensely devoted fraternity of fans; they’ll surely arrive with enthusiasm to spare for his first Detroit-area appearance…

    Sanjaya’s career: What’s next?

American Idol’s latest outcast à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and arguably the biggest cultural phenomenon to evolve from the Idol stage à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ is looking for work.
When it comes to the marvel that is Sanjaya Malakar, “I don’t think we’ve seen another character like him in American Idol history,” says Phil Gallo, associate editor at Variety…

…A novelty recording “aimed at tween girls may possibly sell,” Marks says. “A quickie recording and a funny, self-referential clip for YouTube seem like naturals,” suggests music executive Gene Sculatti, a member of USA TODAY’s Idol coaching panel.

But Idol contracts restrict contestants from putting out an album for three months after the show ends.

He’s better off pursuing something like “becoming a host of a variety show on (the kids cable channel) Noggin,” Marks says.

How about High School Musical 3? Gallo suggests. “If he was surrounded by a lot of other singers, maybe he wouldn’t embarrass himself.”…

AIKEN-AIDE: We have not seen Clay Aiken much since his days on the “American Idol” stage, but he has quietly been working as a UNICEF Ambassador since 2004. Today we heard that Clay was visiting women and children in Afghanistan on his first trip to the country. He spent five days traveling in the central region and focused his trip on education. He also visited clinics where he administered a polio vaccine to a newborn baby. While there he launched a campaign to raise $100,000 in 10 days to support UNICEF’s lifesaving programs in Afghanistan and topped it in the first 7 days with $139,778.

    Morning, everyone!

Just to clear something up from the end of yesterday’s thread: If I Can Dream was written for Elvis for the ’68 Comeback Special. Sinatra recorded it, but it was not his song.

Although the revitalized classics form the heart of the show, its unquestionable highlight comes courtesy of a new song written by composer W. Earl Brown. Inspired by an emotional conversation Binder had with Presley in the wake of Robert Kennedy’s assassination, the director commissioned Brown to come up with a reflective, soulful composition that not only crystallized the feelings of its singer, but also incorporated the mood of a country in the midst of one of its most turbulent years in history. Moved to such a point that the performer asked the songwriter to play his new pride-and-joy numerous times prior to the recording session, If I Can Dream became an unforgettable coda for the special, as Presley’s passionate plea for “peace and understanding” resulted in what may very well be his greatest vocal performance, and a song that remains just as relevant 36 summers later.

ETA: Oops! I may have read last night’s post incorrectly. Oh well……still think this is interesting since it appears the song will be featured next week.

Is videotaping allowed at the legendary Beacon ?

Most of the shows I’ve been to in the city itself don’t allow taping.

But if allowed… one request please — if Taylor hunkers down and sings a slow, passionate song like SOMEHOW or THE FALL, please, please — DON’T SCREAM ( like the fans did in Birmingham when he did MY HOME’s IN ALABAMA ). Videotape it and if possible — share it with the world on the Tube or the Fish.

    Thanks.

  • Little Boy Blue

BTW, Here are some blurbs I read in the Papers regarding Taylor’s upcoming concerts …

    THE NEW YORK TIMES :

TAYLOR HICKS (Tonight) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has sent many singers into the shark tank of Top 40 radio, but this smoky-voiced Alabama crooner, who has more in common with Michael McDonald than with Kelly Clarkson, heads in the direction of buttery soul. At 8, Beacon Theater, beacontheatrenyc.com

And then we have this from the Rialto (Chicago) :

    http://www.nwherald.com/articles/2007/04/20/lifestyle/music/doc46284782d81f3205454355.txt

    Taylor Hicks, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Rialto Square Theatre, 102 N. Chicago St., Joliet. $29.50-$36.50 at (312) 559-1212 or http://www.ticketmaster.com.

Taylor Hicks may have won à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ but he has yet to capture Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ear. His debut album has been eclipsed by discs from season five losers Chris Daughtry and Elliot Yamin. Perhaps its more fun to watch a former bar band singer bust his awkward moves for free on television than pay 30 bucks for the privilege to see Hicks in a classy theater.

    ————————————–
NOTICE HOW THESE BLURBERS HAVE TO FAN THE AI FAN WAR FLAMES AGAIN BY MENTIONING DAUGHTRY’s ALBUM AND ELLIOT’s SALES and then inaccurately stating that Eliott’s sales have eclipsed Taylor’s in number.

In effect the Rialto blurb is telling people not to waste their money on Taylor’s concert. Is this advertising or advocacy ?

    TSK TSK TSK…

  • cheese

Taylor sang JTFTW better than he has previously on TV (IMO), and sang The Maze as a follow-up (but got cut off after the first verse and chorus). The Maze sounded quite nice although I think he sang the wrong lyrics. lol

Taylor looks great and didn’t have to spend any time in the chair answering Kelly’s inane questions. They pimped his book and sort of tangentially mentioned that he’s on tour.

  • Little Boy Blue

Donald Trump says on the Regis and Kelly show that his daughter Ivanka is a fan of Taylor Hicks.

BTW, if anyone watches WWF, did Donald’s wrestler beat Vince Mcmahon’s in the Battle of the Billionaires ? I guess his did because he still got his horrible hair ( the loser shaves his hair ).

And why oh why did Taylor have to sing THE MAZE instead of THE RIGHT PLACE ? But then, he got cut off.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

He sounded pretty good, I thought. Did some interesting syncopation with some of the words. It’s still not my favorite song to hear him sing live, but hey, he’s on TV, so who’s complaining? ;-)

  • JustTheFacts

I love how Kelly thought all the applause was for Donald Trump being a co-host. Is she daft or what?

  • sexygirl

LBB, not to many live songs sound like the actual cd singles.

If this person is going to take cheap swipes at Taylor wouldn’t it make sense to get the facts straight. And I thought only the fans were obsessed with their favorites..

  • sexygirl

And why oh why did Taylor have to sing THE MAZE instead of THE RIGHT PLACE ? But then, he got cut off.

Because he just got though singing a ballad. Two ballads in a row..Nope, not a good thing..

  • sammy

Saw Taylor on R&K. I thought he looked particularly good…slimmed down, good hair. I agree, that I would have liked to have heard “The Right Place”. It seems that JTFTW would sound better live in concert.

She says the same kind of thing to everyone filling in for Regis. Just being gracious.

  • JustTheFacts

You call it gracious, Bobbi, and I call it stroking Donald’s gigantic ego. Either way, I don’t enjoy her insincerity. The Clay (hand over mouth) incident was the end for me. I never missed the show until then. Now, I watch Bill Hemmer and his smart lawyer co-host on FOX instead.

JTFTW, meh, but man, does he look great!! The Maze sounded really good. I’m ready to ditch JTFTW and move on the the next single.

And LMAO at the Donald’s intro to The Maze. His hands were doing all kinds of crazy things. Reminded me of Will Ferrell in Talladega Nights doing his first interview, “I don’t know what to do with my hands…”.

Of course the computer I’m on has video but no audio. Guess I’ll have to wait til I get back home to hear these performances. Wonder if The Maze is the next single?

  • Little Boy Blue

This is the 3rd time I’ve seen Taylor do JTFTW on TV and …. nope, didn’t work for me.

It’s like the recorded version of Georgia…. somehow the magic is gone when translated to another medium. Taylor has never duplicated his magical IYT version of Georgia ANYWHERE. This seems to be true for JTFTW as well.

  • Metta

    Thanks, Debbi! :)

  • Ladybug

    Thanks, Big Tay! :thumbup_tb:

BigTayFan…………..thanks for posting that vid of Taylor on R&K. I just don’t like that song so much and will also be glad when its retired. It is just strange. But Taylor looked good and The Maze sounded better.
Watched Bucky on Jimmy Kimmel last night. His voice sounded really strained. He looked really cute though with that purdy hair. And Sanjaya was on Leno and did a good job in the interview with Jack Black giving him encouragement. He is Indian and Italian so that perked Jay up. I just heard a backstory on Sanjaya on the radio awhile ago that I had not heard……….maybe some of you have……….that when he was four, his dad entered a Hare Krishna community and left the family to subsist on $500 a month for awhile, before getting a job and coming back to the family. Then the DJ said that Sanjaya’s mom is liviing with a guitar player in Hollywood right now.

Popping in to say hello. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to the bell tower close to work at noon for our moment of silence for the tragedy at Va Tech.

Really sorry for everyone at the school. Hope this doesn’t happen again.

Latest news is the psycho gunman, Cho, actually mimicked what he did based on two violent Korean films he watched. The videos he sent mimicked the mannerisms of psychos in the movies.

  • patay

I actually thought JTFTW sounded pretty darn good on R&K but I do hope his next single is a more “rockin” one, maybe Soul Thing or Runaround. I voted for Heaven Knows on Grays when voting for the single. Of course JTFTW had the highest votes and I think Tay really pays attention to his fan-base, although I know there were other more important factors in choosing the single.

And does this guy just get “HOTTER” by the day or what???

  • madaboutu

Lu, I know it will take alot of grieving and healing for all of you, so will just pray that everyone will heal and give each other great support. The whole country holds you in our arms!

  • IGetCranked

And does this guy just get à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“HOTTERà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by the day or what???

I haven’t really paid much attention to that aspect of him but, today, daaaaaanggggg! *smears self in chocolate cake and crawls on his tour bus* It is cake he likes right? I’m sure not going to roll around in turnip greens.

Lu, *hugs you tight* I wiped the cake off first.

  • mags

LU- sorry to hear about that sometimes a good cry helps out.

Oh about the benefit w/ Elliot not a really good idea on some levels. Just leave them alone and let them grieve all the need is the media saying so and so from idol cares.

  • Desdemona

Cheese ~ “Taylor sang JTFTW better than he has previously on TV (IMO),”

I was thinking it wasn’t nearly as good as it was on Ellen, but probably better than on Dr. Phil (because of the sound problems there). I thought he was excellent singing JTFTW on Ellen, but didn’t like the way he sang it this morning on Regis & Kelly. Different strokes for different folks, I understand. :)

    But he LOOKED WONDERFUL!!

This is my last post on the Virginia Tech Massacre ( is promise )… just to show how disturbed people sometimes tend to confuse what they see on films with reality :

Cho Seung-Hui & Oldboy: Killer May Have Re-Enacted Violent Film

Police investigating the Virginia Tech killings are looking at whether Cho Seung-Hui was copying parts of a violent film titled ‘Oldboy’ when he murdered 32 people and killed himself in a massacre earlier this week. “Oldboy,” from the respected director Chan-woo Park, is about a man unjustly imprisoned for 15 years. After escaping, he goes on a rampage against his captor. In one scene, he dispatches more than a dozen henchmen with the aid of a hammer, reports the Associated Press….

Lu, am thinking about you – I watch the news and see the pain on all those faces and it just breaks my heart for everyone. I can’t even begin to understand how someone could do something like the killer did…… :(

  • IGetCranked

steve-o-meter, I’m so glad you watched! That is the first finale that I have rewatched a few times. It just felt good! LOVEDDDDD all the guys doing Tobacco Road!

I hope Chris does well with his cd. I’m going to be getting it soon. :)

I wanted to post the front page and article from L.A. Times from this mornings Calendar section, but couldn’t find it as it is in the actual paper. I am flabbergasted. HUGE picture of Sanjaya and Lakisha with two pages of print. This years coverage is unbelievable……..we have celebrity events every day or week and even the Oscar winner does not get such a huge pic.
We are getting our first actual measurable rain since last year, and I am afraid you guys in the midwest and east are going to get another taste after we are through. We really need it though. Three inches in 9 months does not help.

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

IGetCranked – I’m so looking forward to seeing Sligh again at this years finale’…looking forward to the return of Sanjaya tooooooo.

Sligh’s CD is very much worth buying…great CD.

I have a question for all of you music genius peeps!
How long does an artist usualy wait to release a 2nd single from the album. Does it depend on how the current single is charting or is it just a matter of “so may months” between singles???

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

Well, it looks like Phil is leading the “who will we vote for next” poll on VTFW. There’s even a picture of Nosterafu. Sigh. Oh well, I’m sure Phil will take it all in stride – he seems like a pretty laid back guy who is just enjoying being on the show. Sanjaya was interviewed by my local Fox news last night and was asked about Phil (since Phil has OK ties). Sanjaya said that Phil is amazing, and is very energetic and spiritual.

I’m still a proud member of Team Plaid and Team Humble (or is that Melake or Blalinda)? I get confused by all of the teams and blends. Jordin is in my top 3, and Phil moves into 4th after last week’s performance. The other two – who are they again?

  • RollTide

    Avril = blech!

I saw Taylor on R&K, and he did look great. His voice sounded a little hoarse on the first song, but the 2nd sounded better. Saw Bucky last night, and was there a problem with the sound for him? I could barely hear him. It was like the band was overpowering him. Thought Sanjaya handled himself well through all the negative attention he has been getting.

Prayers for everyone involved in the VA tragedy. It is incredibly hard for me to see the killer constantly on tv, so I can only imagine how hard it is for those with friends and family in the area. I can’t watch the news anymore.

  • madaboutu

Rolltide………..I saw Bucky too on Kimmel and he sounded strained. Maybe the additional appearances are taking a toll. He looked great though and has improved on his stage presence. Was that Rocky banging away on the drums? Taylor……….I don’t know what to say about that song. It is just weird to sing.

  • Smiley

Mad, I agree with you. Something about that song just does not flow. The CD version is OK but these times he has sung it live, it just doesn’t translate very well. Or something.

  • FOTIAI

Little Boy Blue – I see that no one responded to your WWE question. Yes, Trump’s guy (Bobby Lashley) beat McMahon’s (UMAGA), and it was actually Trump who got to shave Vince’s head! (I saw the blurb on RAW, I did not pay for the Wrestlemania – I enjoy watching, but not THAT much). I think it’s pretty safe to say that there was never any intention for Trump to lose – maybe Vince has a disease or lice and that’s why he was willing to get rid of his nice hair (compared to Trump, Vince’s hair is spectacular).

  • madaboutu

Smiley………..I don’t know either about that song, it just has too many transitions and I have always hated what I call the yelling part. I am just praying that it will not be the one sung on AI. I am wondering if PIB will be what he sings, just because he hasn’t sung it at all on tour. I don’t know!!!!! :unsure_tb:

  • Smiley

I hope he will use that opportunity to introduce the 2nd single, whatever it is. I think the first one has run its course.

  • vegasdee

Hey peeps! I just got off the phone with an old DJ friend of mine, I’m trying to score tickets to Gwen Steffani’s concert at the Palms this weekend, anyway we were talkin and he told me I just saw your boy on Regis and Kelly, he is not a Taylor fan, and he tells me that he loved The Maze, and that it should be released to radio, he really liked that song, he thinks it could be a major HIT, he said and I quote, “That song could be Taylor’s ‘Irreplaceable’”, he means that it could be a big hit, like Irreplaceable was for Beyonce. He also said he would play it if he could, but the song doesn’t fit the radio stations formant. I thought what he said was pretty cool, considering he is not a fan at all which is kind of weird since Talor’s manager at the firm, is an old friend of his from way back in the day.

Really? I hate the Maze, my favs on the album are still JTFTW and Heaven Knows. I doubt Taylor would release The Right Place next just because it’s two ballads in a row, and first of all the majority of artists don’t do that, but when you’re also known for having energetic performances and not as well known for ballads its also a bit of a killer

Blake singing “All I Want is You” would be thud-inducing.

Erinn who posts at teamplaid.com suggested “Don’t Dream It’s Over” for Blake. Also a great fit for him and maybe more “inspirational.”

  • Metta

Just popping in for a sec to post this link. See you all after the show!

Hicks’ Career Keeps Him Too Busy For Idol

The tour has been selling out, but the media have made a big deal of the fact that Hicks’ CD has not sold as well as those by previous winners and runners-up. “Taylor Hicks” already has dropped off Billboard’s top-selling albums chart. Meanwhile, last year’s fourth-place finisher, rocker Chris Daughtry’s “Daughtry” remains in the Top 10 with a multi-platinum hit and Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood’s debut, “Some Hearts,” has sold nearly 6 million copies and produced three hit singles.

Their appeals are more mass-market music than a 30-year-old guy with prematurely gray hair, a slightly goofy (but charming) manner and a style that leans more toward blues and R&B. One bit of silver-haired lining: Hicks’ current single, “Just to Feel That Way,” is a Top 20 hit at adult contemporary radio.

Did a little research for Team Plaid. Three songs from country night are now charting on the iTunes Top 100.

Blake Lewis – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“When the Stars Go Blueà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Tim McGraw – charting at 22 on the iTunes Top 100.

Jordin Sparks- à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Broken Wingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Martina McBride – charting at 66 on the iTunes Top 100.

Lakisha Jones- à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jesus Take the Wheelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Carrie Underwood – charting at 84 on the iTunes Top 100.

LB2 checked the iTunes Country chart and more of them are charting there. Tim McGraw’s version of WTSGB is at no. 2 behind Carrie’s “Before He Cheats.”

Too bad it’s not the Ryan Adams’ version.

Thanks BigTayFan for the Regis and Kelly clips. I am shocked at how terrific The Maze sounded. I really hope that’s his next single. If it sounded that great on TV, it should sound great on radio also – plus it is very ‘catchy’.

As long as Taylor doesn’t perform JTFTW at the AI finale… anything else would be better than that I think. (Though I do LOVE the recorded version – it just doesn’t translate that well on TV.)

I hope the MJrs have a great time tonight at Taylor’s show!

Does anybody have a link to Bucky’s appearance on Kimmel? I would love to see it. I miss the Buckster.

    Hey Liz unforunatedly

all Idols returning to the show..from winning sings their single they are promoting right now
in my opening taylor should sing it /come close to the breather version of the song and not chop the words.”leave us broken..and wounded but the pain is worth it” when i heard it on my tv radio it sounded if he forgotten the words….and i like it when he passionate with that verse..not the way he chops up those words..but other then that it was a great rendition..but with all the songs taylor has sung on tour..this is the only song he needs to just do it they way the album/or remix is..sing it straight

  • Margie

mad, Can you get on the boogie? Is it me or is it down?

  • PamsterAtl

Lu – if you’re still around – hugs to you and Schmanda at this awful time for VA.

Now on the SQEEEEE side. I got my ticket to Elliott’s concert here in ATL on May 15th. I went early to the boxoffice expecting a line – and I was it. Before the noon box office opening time, the lady came out opening the door and let me in 10 minutes early and was just as excited as I about his upcoming concert. She also was confused as to why there wasn’t a crowd outside…. But – apparently, since I was at the box office before the noon release of tickets, that I, yes, me, Elliott’s forever fan – bought his very first concert ticket for Atlanta show. I am so excited. I had to come share at MJ’s. I don’t care if he doesn’t sell the show out – I am going to see him in a small venue and I will be standing as close as I can. I may have sat in the balcony for Taylor’s show – but I am standing and cheering for Elliott. :clap_tb:

Okay – gotta go now – grandchildren coming over and need to babysit. But – sigh – I am happy, so happy.

BTW – just saw the movie In the Land of Women and it was great. Not at all like the usual chick flick. Very well done.

  • Liz

PlatinumGray – I agree with your assessment… I don’t like the way Taylor has been chopping up the phrasing when he performs JTFTW on TV.

So you think he won’t be able to release a new single in time for the finale? That will suck.

Congratulations Pamster!! I hope you enjoy Elliott’s concert – I’m sure you will, and you must have the best seat in the house. I’m so happy for you!

  • hicksaholic

Did y’all notice Melanie coming in on certain parts of JTFTW? I think it might be because it is such a hard song to sing live that she could balance out some of the harder parts but I am certainly not an expert. I just noticed and wondered whether there was a reason

  • Kirsten

Billboard Boxscores for the week are in. Not much from AI:

Daughtry: March 21: Philadelphia: Sold Out (1000): Tickets $20: $19,060

There were a lot of concert reports for X Factor Live (which I presume is the tour spawned by Simon’s X Factor show in the UK):

    Manchester : 3 Concerts: 31,542 tickets : $1,500,209
    London : 3 Concerts : 27,590 tickets : $1,227,797
    Cardiff : 4 Concerts : 18,800 tickets : $890,411
    Birmingham : 2 Concerts : 18,542 tickets : $873,712
    Glasgow : 2 Sold Out Concerts : 18,154 tickets : $866,591
    Sheffield : 2 Concerts : 17,568 tickets : $847,783
    Newcastle upon Tyne : 2 Concerts : 13,988 tickets : $661,006
    Brighton : 4 Sold Out Concerts : 13,860 tickets : $639,791
    Nottingham : 2 Concerts : 10,669 tickets : $506,158
    Aberdeen : 2 Sold Out Concerts : 8,920 tickets : $428,455
    Bournemouth : 2 Sould Out Concerts : 6,900 tickets : $329,812

  • hicksaholic

I guess it is crazy to hope but if Taylor could do HEAVEN KNOWS or THE RIGHT PLACE or anything with the energy level as his live concerts on AI I can’t believe people would not love it but what do I know? I have taken people to Taylor concerts who have not seen him live and they are floored by how great his show is. This is probably scary to say but I swear I could go see him every weekend and not get bored. He is different each time you see him. I have been to see him live 7 times and am trying to figure out where I can next go short of following his tour and subsequently becoming divorced from my husband.

  • madaboutu

Margie………..the boogie is up now, but I guess it was down for awhile. I didn’t see your message till now, so I am sure you have tried again.

  • PamsterAtl

Hey a quick post before diaper duty calls…. I may have the first ticket to Elliott’s concert — but it is general admission and no seats to be had – not even balcony like I did for Taylor. And btw – totallllly agree that Taylor is fabulous in a live performance. I think that is his forte and for Chris – it’s his recording voice and of course the popular rock music he sings. For Elliott —- it’s his voice and no matter how I hear it live or memorex— it’s exciting and warming and so enjoyable.

  • Liz

Pamster – I didn’t realize Elliott’s show is general admission… I guess you’ll just have to push your way to the front. ;) Which venue is it?

Did yà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢all notice Melanie coming in on certain parts of JTFTW? I think it might be because it is such a hard song to sing live that she could balance out some of the harder parts but I am certainly not an expert.

Hicksaholic – Actually, the back up singing really bothered me in that performance. I thought Taylor sounded great, but the back up singing sounded very off to me, and way too distracting. It didn’t work for me at all. I would love to hear the rest of The Maze though.

LMAO i just read someone liken Chris’ voice to “opening up his mouth and the noise of a kazoo comes out!” And Melinda looks like DW from the childs cartoon show, Arthur

PlatinumGray – I agree with your assessmentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like the way Taylor has been chopping up the phrasing when he performs JTFTW on TV.

See, I thought he sang it pretty much like the cd when he sang it on Ellen. I REALLY didn’t like it this morning.

We are not the only ones who weren’t impressed with it this morning – this blog link was in my google alerts: :(

    What a Hick!

Can someone tell me WHAT the hell is Taylor Hicks doing and why is he on my television?

I’m watching Regis & Kelly right now and he is screaming worse than that drunk guy trying to be a rock star at karaoke on Monday. (No, that wasn’t me…)

Now I don’t watch American Idol (SHUT UP! I KNOW!) , but how in God’s name did he win.

Big Tay.. Thanks for the Taylor videos with Regis & Kelly. Finally he put on some gel. He looked good.

I am thinking he is taking a lesson or two from Blake on the hair department. Ha, ha. You should Taylor, Blake has an awesome sense of style. JMHO.

What a difference the gel makes on Taylor honestly…

I think The MAze is the only song on Taylor’s album that may have a chance of airplay on Top 40 radio. Hope they choose it as his next single.

In other news Go Team Plaid!
I am glad Blake’s songs on AI have been charting high on Itunes. He really going to sell TONS of records. I have a feeling..

I had never heard When The Stars Go Blue which Blake sang last Tuesday. I think it is a beautiful song and I have become somewhat obsessed with it. Here is the Tim McGraw version which someone has made into a video to scenes from a Johnny Depp movie.

This is the version Blake did last week. What a great song.

The African Childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Choir will make an appearance on the American Idol – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol Gives Backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ show, which will raise funds for charities in the U.S. and Africa.

Elliott is at ‘The Loft’ in Atlanta which was where Daughtry sang about a month ago. It is a smaller venue, but Chris sold his show out within minutes.

I have always felt that “The Maze” could be a big hit. That song is a great song for ” summer put the top down and drive around”. And Taylor did look great on R&K this am. JTFTW is a good song but difficult to sing.Taylor really belts it out , maybe if he would go a little softer in the beginning then build to the belting he wouldn’t strain his voice so much. He has the kind of voice I love to listen to.
As for Melinda , I think that she has the most beautiful eyes and I thought that she looked great on country night. She has had a couple of off nights on her attire but she has been so consistant with her singing , I love the gal. She seems to me that she is a person with a beautiful soul.

    To quote a quote:

Now I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t watch American Idol (SHUT UP! I KNOW!) , but how in Godà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name did he win.

I haven’t watched R&K yet, but why he won was so, so evident at the Beacon tonight. I’ve never been a part of anything like that, at his prior shows or any other concert I’ve ever been to.

I thought it was going to be a dead crowd. I was wrong.

The roof? Was ripped off the joint.

  • Little Boy Blue

I thought it was going to be a dead crowd. I was wrong.

The roof? Was ripped off the joint.

So, did he sell out the Beacon ?

  • Kat in NY

So, did he sell out the Beacon?

I don’t think so. They had all levels open I believe, and I was toward the front of the orchestra level. The orchestra seating was crowded but not full, I could not see the upper 2 levels.

You would never have known it was not a sellout from the noise level. The cheers were deafening. New York City loves Taylor Hicks.

  • madaboutu

Kat in NY…………that is really good to hear. Did you meet up with any MJ members?

  • Little Boy Blue

Thanks Kat in NY… What was the crowd profile like ? Age group ? Men vs. women ? And what did Taylor do for an encore ?

  • madaboutu

LBB…………I think Naked In the Jungle, right Kat? I was on the boogie but right at the very end the cellcert went kaput.

  • Kat in NY

The encore was Naked in the Jungle mixed with Sly Stone’s Higher. He played the organ. He dropped the mic, started to leave and came back, left the stage for a bit, and came back out again. The audience was just wild for him. Screaming, cheering, clapping banging on seats. I can’t convey with words how much NYC loved Taylor Hicks.

Crowd was as diverse as NYC :) Good mix of young/old, men/women.

I didn’t meet up with any MJers :( I’m shy :redface_wp: Next time, since there surely will be one after that.

  • madaboutu

Thanks Kat. I read your recap on the boogie. I hope the review is a good one. Have a good night.

  • Metta

Hi all – I was just in chat – didn’t think anyone was still here. I echo what Kat said about the show. For me, it was the very best performance I’ve ever seen from Taylor. The love was mutual – he said we were the best audience of the entire tour.

  • madaboutu

Metta…………was there any a** kicking tonite or did the Taylor love dissolve it?

  • Kat in NY

Thanks mad :smile_wp: I’m going to be up until 5AM I am so wired right now lol.

I can’t imagine anyone giving that a bad review… but even if that ends up being the case I can say without a single doubt that the audience loved the hell out of him. I know i’m repeating myslef but the crowd reaction just blew my mind. I absolutely did not expect that from this crowd going in.

  • Metta

Ditto what Kat said about the audience reaction. It was thunderous. The orchestra section stood for the entire show.

mad – Not even Taylor could come between my foot and JJ’s a$$. Cue the “Had a Bad Day” music for JJ’s a$$.

  • Boulder Soul

I love Metta….glad Taylor was on his game and that you had a GREAT time.

  • Metta

Love you too, Boulder :) Maybe tomorrow I’ll do a recap if peeps are interested. Good nite for now.

  • Boulder Soul

    KatinNY:
Thanks for your comments. Sounds as if the Beacon was rocking hard.

  • Boulder Soul

Night Metta. Yes, interested in Beacon details. I guess ass kicking tires one out. ;) Sleep well my friend.

  • madaboutu

Metta……….LOL re:JJ. We will hear her side tomorrow I am sure. Of course there will be enough interest. Will you post here or at the boogie?

Kat………I imagine that you would be wired. I have a few weeks till I go. How was Toby Lightman?

  • Metta

Mad – I’ll post here. I just posted a short recap on the boogie.

    Thanks and nite all :)

  • Kat in NY

    How was Toby Lightman?

I like her, though I was a tad bored tonight since it was my third time seeing her, and her set list didn’t change much.

She mentioned that his was her last night with Taylor, and her first time at the Beacon, so of course she would get sick beforehand :sad_wp: She definetely looked ill but still gave a solid performance.

  • madaboutu

Kat………….that is too bad that Toby was sick. I read somewhere that she said she might be back for the last shows. Don’t remember where I saw that. I know she has some other gigs next week etc. I would like her to be at our west coast concerts out of the opening acts Taylor has had so far. Maybe it doesn’t matter though. I am going to give it up for tonite. Glad you had such a good time!

  • sexygirl

I stood between Metta giving JJ a good ole fashion BUTT WHOOOOPING.. :wink_ee:

Yes, and if anyone wants to know, SPENSER is the BOMB….

  • madaboutu

sexygirl………..you mean even Taylor couldn’t stop the violence? LOL

  • MaryS-NJ

sexygirl…you mean even Taylor couldnà¢ÃƒÆ’’šÃ‚â‚ ¬ÃƒÆ’’šÃ‚â„ ¢t stop the violence? LOL

Taylor was not present for the brawl. But he did, in the end, have a soothing affect after the freak-on at the Beacon.

Sexygirl did valiantly attempt to keep the peace, but there were scores to be settled, and you know, a$$es to be kicked. It was a force of nature.

Read my fight recap on the Saturday thread.
