Frenchie Davis, The Voice Season 1 semi-finalist who was notoriously disqualified from American Idol Season 2 when producers discovered that appeared on a porn website has come out as lesbian to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

“I love the gays,” she says. “I love the gay boys. They have that awesome, masculine energy, but there’s also something else going on as well.”

There’s also something else going on with Davis. She’s been dating a woman for the past year.

“I wasn’t out before the relationship, but I wasn’t in,” she says. “I dated men and women, though lesbians weren’t feeling the bisexual thing. Now I’m in love with a woman I think I can be with forever.”

Frenchie’s  is spending June hitting the Gay Pride Circuit, including PrideFest in St. Louis. She is also about to drop a new single, “Love’s Got a Hold on Me.”

“I owe ‘The Voice’ for figuring out what my sound is,” says Frenchie, “Christina (Aguilera) had me signing dance pop. That’s something I initially would not have chosen, but it took off.”

Congrats, Frenchie, on both your personal and professional life coming together in beautiful way.

    What’s not to get?

“I still don’t get it; why is someone’s sexual orientation an issue?  So what if these celebrities are straight/gay/bi. They are here to entertain us on stage and tv/movie screens not in our beds.  So what’s the bother?”

That argument is a two-edged sword. On one hand, it shouldn’t be an issue. In a perfect world, people would go, “she brought a date, what a nice looking woman, hohum.”

On other hand, (as we don’t live in the perfect world where it would be normal to “not get it”,) saying that what she did isn’t a big deal, and thus shouldn’t be treated as such, is belittling the issue. Maybe she is calculating, maybe she decided that it would be a vise career move to start cater for gay orientated circles, but I don’t particularly care about her ulterior motives. Coming out in entertaining world is still a huge risk, it can kill a career.

But there are “happy ends”, too. After Neil Patrick Harris came out, what was his next gig? Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long-Blog, an internet series directed by Josh Whedon in 2008. Many, myself included, thought that as a milestone for the end of both of their careers. But in 2012, NPH is more celebrated than ever, and Whedon went and directed Avengers.

Frenchie, I don’t give a crap about your sexual preference.  In fact, I didn’t really want to know that.  For God’s sake, just entertain us and keep your private life private.

Emmuzka, I agree, it shouldn’t be an issue, and there’s never gonna be a ‘perfect’ world. But the less this is a big deal – the closer we get. IMO.

if Frenchie Davis is dating a woman, she has every right to say so – just as Kelly Clarkson had every right to say she was dating a man, and I actually don’t care who either one is dating. Celebrities often don’t have the option to keep their private life completely private – how much beyond what can be publicly seen they decide to share is their choice…but no one ought to be expected to live a lie, not for the sake of their career, or for other people’s comfort.

And Neal Patrick Harris wasn’t even on my radar (Though Joss Whedon certainly was) until he did Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog.  That was a weird, quirky, funny, entertaining show – and I loved it – been paying attention to his work ever since.

She was interviewed because she was there for Pride parade. And she’s giving thanks to her “most loyal” fanbase, the LGBT community. It was the focus of half the interview how the LGBT community contributed to her career. That’s why it’s relevant. Just like when Kelly says she lost weight because she has a boyfriend, they print it. And it’s no secret that LGBT children, let alone adults, have a tough time being open about their lives and are targets of hate because of their orientation. It’s not about sex.

I wonder. If she had mentioned her past and current relationship with men, would people still be telling her to shut up about her “private life?”

No, they’d be commenting on her weight :)

Well, you could have easily avoided the article; the
headline was pretty clear about the subject.

But if you don’t want to read about celebrities’ personal lives, you should avoid most articles and posts.  We often hear about Carrie’s husband, Ace and Diana’s engagement, Gokey’s widowhood and new marriage, Taylor Hicks seeking a date on TV, Kris Allen’s marriage and so on.

After Neil Patrick Harris came out, what was his next gig? Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long-Blog, an internet series directed by Josh Whedon in 2008. Many people really thought that?  I assumed that after H&K and HIMYM that NPH had made it so obvious that he could “play straight” (and the most outrageous, uproarious, sleazy version of that, if need be) that he was going to keep working no matter what. (Not that that would be the only thing to recommend him! Just that no executives would have the excuse that he couldn’t be convincing in a range of different roles.)

And by the time Dr. Horrible came out, I thought Whedon had been greenlit for Dollhouse.  He was also going to keep working no matter what.

But mostly, I want to see his version of Much Ado About Nothing.

Anyway, I’m happy she’s in love.
