In case you didn’t see the announcement in the So You Think You Can Dance results re-cap, it was announced tonight that FOX will re-run the the American Idol Season 8 Top 13 episode featuring the music of Michael Jackson.

The episode will re-run on Monday at 8pm.

    So, this is the first time Fox has ever re-aired an Idol episode, I believe. I am looking forward to rewatching. I remember really enjoying (in order of performance) Kris, Allison, Adam, and Matt in this episode. For Anoop’s sake, I will skip over his performance.

    This is a nice idea. I hope the idols can dedicate a song to MJ during the tour. To me, Adam’s performance of Black/White was a standout. I have posted before that the song never grabbed me the way Adam’s version did. And I like MJ very much.

    I’m super excited to see the replay of all of the idols singing MJ’s songs. I love this group from season 8.

    It would be even more awesome, if they were allowed to sing their MJ songs live and not a repeat from the show.

    America will get to see the moment, about halfway thru Black or White when Adam Lambert became a star.

    He started out the song like a solid Idol wannabee and something threw the switch while he was performing.

    It was during the bridge, when he hopped down in front of the judges and started singing like the devil had possessed him, singing like a scalded cat.

    I’m happy that most of the Idols did really well on Michael Jackson songs, so we’ll be able to appreciate the songs instead of cringe at the thought of them being mangled. Even Jorge and Jasmine, who were eliminated, sang perfectly passably – the only issues being they were not very memorable. Kris, Allison, Adam, Danny, Lil, Matt, and Alexis all gave extremely strong performances IMO.

    However, the thought of having to listen go through two hours of show that I’ve already seen before is terrifying, I think I’ll skip out on the rewatch.

    I wonder if they’ll show it commercial-free, that would be really classy of FOX.

    It was a terrific show. The one where I officially became an Allison fan(tard:). Give In To Me was just magical, and Michael is to thank for that. In addition to being a great singer and dancer, he was also an incredible songwriter, as six of these songs attest. He is almost certainly the foremost performer of the last 50 years. It is so sad that he had such a terrifying, brain-wrecking upbringing. RIP.

    I hope that they’ll check the judges’ comments beforehand, considering that it’s supposed to be a tribute. At least Kara’s “I hope Michael Jackson is watching!” comment on Adam’s performance should be reconsidered.

    It would really be a lot better if they took out the judge’s comments–those make it more about the show, whereas just showing the performances is more of a testimony to the enduring power of Jackson’s songs–I remember Kris (and Matt?) being very good, and then Allison and especially Adam being truly amazing.

    This is the one where Adam looks very emotional during the judges comments. It was that moment that I knew a) this guy is effing amazing and b) he REALLY wants it.

    That whole Adam performance was made of win- from him giggling and losing his breath when he went to touch hands with the swaybots, to him putting his finger in the air when talking about equality, to the high kick. And then the switch from stage performer to humble contestant when he teared up at the judges comments.

    He kept topping himself after that performance but that was definitely the start of it all!

    And when you watch it again on Monday- just REALLY listen to the first line of the song when he comes out. He sounds EXACTLY like MJ ( the singer, not the blogger, lol.)

    And wow- I just realized how fangirly that sounded. Sowwy. I guess the song just has even more meaning now, ya know?

    I am looking forward to seeing that show…it was one of my favorites from the season! (and THE time I sat up and really took notice of Adam)

    As I was listening to the news this morning I got to thinking about how the other side of the world loved MJ…(the scandal that hurt him here in America didn’t hurt him Internationally). Simon thought Adam had the chance to become a big International star…..(reports are that he(Adam) already is popular there in spite of his *differences*.) With the loss of MJ, there will be a void and perhaps a chance for Adam to fill it.

    There is no question that MJ was a great talent and Adam has yet to prove just how great his is……………the big difference between the two is that MJ was someone never comfortable in his own skin….Adam, on the other hand, seems to be winning that battle.

    Black OR White was he performance that cemented Adam as a star in a lot of people’s minds. It’s the most played performance on my Ipod, and I’m glad it’s being re-run. Adam should pick quite a number of new fans next Monday night.

    To be honest I don’t remember any of the other performances, since I never downloaded any but Adam’s, it’s been months since I’ve seen them.

    So last night, I was enjoying the link posted by someone here (Thank you!) to MJ’s youtube of his Motown Anniversary performance where he “moonwalked off with the show…” (AP article, I think.) My daughter who was already in bed heard the music and came running out to dance all the way through it — slightly differently from MJ, as she’s only 4 and has not yet seen a lot of his work. LOL

    Then, this morning I had on MTV (MJ has finally worked yet another miracle of putting music back on MTV with their overnight tribute) and they showed his Black or White performance with Slash (fantastically entertaining BTW.) She looked up at me midway through the song and said, “That’s not Adam.” Whoops, seems I’ve dropped the ball on her music history appreciation education. I’ll get right on that! :-)

    Meanwhile, I’ve sadly confirmed that I still only own Thriller and Bad in vinyl. Dangerous is all that I have on CD. Time to update…

    ETA: Well, now that I think about it, I do have the Jackson 5 Christmas album on CD too. That’s definitely a fav around here! :-)

    I am so glad they are doing this! I agree, cut out the judges comments, I think that will take away from the tribute this is supposed to be. And I hope iTunes puts the downloads back up (I only have Adam’s from that show), maybe they could donate proceeds to some fund for his kids or something.

    This performance establish Kris’ knowledge of Michael’s music catalogue, not only was his second time performing Michael Jackson after “Man in a mirror” in semifinals, but he also took time to help Allison choosing a song that fit her style and personality “Give into me” instead of going with the more well known “Beat it” that Anoop ended up singing (with terrible consecuences).

    From the days when he, like many other kids, used to dance to the beats of Michael’s songs in the privacy of his room, to the performer who treated the material with great respect, MJ was an important influence in Kris’s life.

    This was the show where I offiicially fell in love with Adam and Allison. Watching it back, this one of Kris’s weakest perfomances, IMO, but who cares, and Kara complimented him on helping the other contestants because he knew MJ’s music well. Adam did tear up during Paula’s critique, and we first met Kris’s wife Katy (so cute!).

    While I would love to cut out the judges’ banter, and there was a lot of it, shock, it was also the episode where we first got to meet the Idols, which is cool (yes, I have this on DVR, so I have re-watched it already, ha ha). It would be terrific if each Idol got to speak about MJ had personally impacted their music, but I am not going to quibble. This is a very classy move by FOX, so kudos to them, and RIP, MJ. How refreshing to get back to the making of music again.

    Sudden loss, very sad day. It would be a perfect tribute if Fox will select the best among the Michael Jackson song performances across all American Idol seasons – that will be more meaningful . It would show Michael Jackson’s influence over the years of American Idol rather than just being the theme for the week. And Kara’s comment and Adam’s reply at end of his performance would be perfect to cap it all. Not that I am biased ,but it would make sense.

    Anyway, it still great to have the rerun.

    Shallow it may be , but I really love Adam’s outfit for Black or White. Cobalt blue jacket and the shirt which is like a modern geometric painting picking up on the color of the jacket. It was actually the outfit that called our attention first, and of course the singing sealed it all. The falsetto and the rock snarl and crescendo jolted us. Double take moment.

    I think the show should just be as it was….that is the real tribute, warts and all, judges and all. Everyone was celebrating the “music” of Michael Jackson that night, and isn’t that the purpose of re-airing the show. To let America know how the stuff that Michael did 20 to 30 years ago is still affecting the new young singers of today.

    Interesting side note…I tunes is all about Michael today. I am sure many people who had forgotten how much they loved his music and didn’t update their records or tapes to CDs and MP4s are doing it today! He was an integral part of our musical lives and should be remembered that way.

    I have already stepped up to the plate and asked Adam if he could please be our next Michael Jakson – it was Adam’s performance of Black or White that caught my attention that night as I was not watching American Idol until that night. I had to take a seat and watch the rest of the show, but Adam did a fantastic job of singing that song – I hope since he is a new star that is born and we have lost a legend, that in the passing of Michael Jackson the torch has been passed to Adam Lambert to keep us entertained and be our Michael Jackson. I can’t say anything more than this I am too grief-striken, bursting into tears, in disbelief. I was hoping it was just a bad dream, I was hoping he was just in a coma, I was hoping he was still with us and someone got the news wrong, or maybe he had a panic attack and he will be fine. I watched one channel which was saying he was in a coma, then I switch to another one and it said he was dead, I was hoping the former was more true than the latter. I wanted to live to be able to compare his first moon walk to his new to be performed in his upcoming comeback tour next month, I wanted to compare his hips gyrating back in the earlier days to his new moves now that he is 50 – I was so looking forward to his performances – now I cannot compare anything, Michael Jackson is no longer with us – having to put that into same sentence is unfathomable (if there is such a word). He can never be replaced but I hope Adam can mirror his musical ability and keep us entertained – the music industry will NEVER BE THE SAME – NO ONE ON PLANET EARTH CAN REPLACE THIS GENIUS.

    My prayers go out to his kids and his entirely family.

    Oh that’s a very nice tribute from FOX, and a gift to Idol fans too. These are the artists, who grew up loving MJ, who will carry his music forward for future generations, whether to large audiences or small local ones. It all works!

    My fantasy is that they have Ryan Seacrest host a retrospective show that largely is a re-run of the Top 13 episode but starts with Ryan saying “AI’s tribute to Michael Jackson started in the semi-finals with eventual winner Kris Allen singing Man in the Mirror” and then they show that performance too. I love it, and it’s no where on the internet.

    That was a great show and I remember vividly the exact moment I fell hardcore in love with Adam Lambert. It was during the judges comments (if they can weed out the negative ones, that would be great, but some of the positive ones were interesting assessments of Michael’s profound power). What I call Adam’s “fierce vulnerability” was never more evident than in that performance-to-critique transition. He goes from this explosive, confident powerhouse and then immediately morphs to this sweet, adorable guy with a GORGEOUS smile, completely overwhelmed by the praise he was getting.

    That moment: me = dead (holla! Ellie2). It’s been Adam-loving, web crawling, full blown AI obsession for me ever since and it’s not a stretch to say life-changing. It has certainly reignited my passion for all types of music and my interest in the music industry.

    And I too wondered if MJ was watching and what he thought about his influence on this next generation of recording artists.

    Yes, I would love to hear the idols pay tribute to MJ.

    I realize that Adam may be the performer who has most demonstrated MJ’s style, but I believe his influence has had a huge impact on most of the idols.

    I love and own Matt’s, Human Nature. The same with Kris’s, Remember the Time. From the beginning, the fact that MJ made such an impact on Kris stood out to me in such a surprising way. He and Matt made MJ’s songs their own and Kris helped Allison choose her song for that night, which also fit her so well. In addition, it was MJ’s Man in the Mirror, that earned him a place in the top 13 by voters choice. Kris is who I want to hear from most in tribute to MJ. However, I also believe the others would have some amazing things to say as well. :)

    Can’t wait for this! So sad about Michael’s death, but Nigel gave a wonderful little tribute to him on SYTYCD, and ended by saying we should all celebrate his amazing contributions to music and dance, which is so true.

    Part of me was wondering if having some of the (mediocre) top 13 singing his work was really the best way to pay tribute to him (sorry, Anoop, but I just heard the original Beat It, and was reminded of how amazing the original is)

    But it is definitely appropriate to play his music and showcase what an amazing talent he was, and how much great music he gave us (all the radio broadcasts this morning have inspired me to buy about a dozen MJ tracks on itunes this weekend).

    Also, it will be really interesting to watch the top 13, knowing how it all played out. I remember Paula declared “See you in the finals” to Adam and Danny during this one, and I couldn’t even remember what Kris sang, but I’ll be reminded of how awesome Alexis was, how awesome Adam ALWAYS was, and how over-rated some others were. I definitely won’t miss it!

    That was a great show and I remember vividly the exact moment I fell hardcore in love with Adam Lambert. It was during the judges comments (if they can weed out the negative ones, that would be great, but some of the positive ones were interesting assessments of Michaelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s profound power). What I call Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“fierce vulnerabilityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  was never more evident than in that performance-to-critique transition. He goes from this explosive, confident powerhouse and then immediately morphs to this sweet, adorable guy with a GORGEOUS smile, completely overwhelmed by the praise he was getting.

    Didn’t we hear in interviews that Adam was choosing between this and Thriller, and chose BoW in part because of the social message, especially since it was right around the time of the picture release/Bill O’Reilly crap, etc.?

    Knowing all that in his post-show interviews just makes BoW that much more relevant and moving (his “saw you kicking dirt in my eye” is really potent) And I LOVED his little laugh at an audience member in the beginning of the song :-)

    Vicon, thanks for that 1995 MTV awards clip. HOLY CRAP!!! That was fantastic. I didn’t watch it at the time and I remember only seeing snippets, but that was the very definition of FIERCE. Absolute stellar, mind-blowing, timeless Michael Jackson.

    I don’t think this is an appropriate way to give tribute to Michael Jackson. This seems more like an attempt by Fox to capitalize on this tragedy and get attention for the AI Tour right before the AI Tour begins. At the very least, they should edit out the judges comments and replace it with a real tribute to Michael Jackson’s talent, but I think there are better ways to pay tribute, it’s too soon after his death for something like this to seem even remotely appropriate, IMHO.

    Making a buck remains important. It would be nice if more money from this rerun went to the contestants (and the band), who do the heavy lifting. Just hope they get a share in the proceeds (even though it wasn’t the best night for the Idols, really.)

    Ironically, Who’s Bad, billed as the world’s foremost MJ tribute band, is playing the 9:30 Club in DC tonight. They were having trouble selling it out but now they’ve added a second late-night show.

    As often happens, I guess we don’t know what we’ve got till it’s gone.

    Hopefully they’ll have Ryan Seacrest re-introduce the show, include David Cook’s “Billie Jean” as a prologue (with a new LOUD Chris Cornell shoutout), and then just show the actual S8 performances sans critiques.

    If it’s being rebroadcast as a tribute to MJ, then they should clean up the original (especially the sound, which typically sucks on the east coast feed) and make it the best television they can.

    I think this is a wonderful Idea – it just so happens it comes right before their tour – FOX sure as heck didnt plan and hope that Michael would be gone in order to get some free promo’s for the Idol tour – I think it is a wonderful tribute. They are not getting any extra money from it, commercials and things that were already scheduled to air in House and Lies will still be in this show.
    There isnt time (or space) to run around getting people to pay for new commercials to throw in at the last minute. If they were hoping for more revenue they would have scheduled this to air in a week or two not monday. Some People always seem to try make something beautiful into something ugly, it is the nature of the beast

    IMO, the show Monday will be heavily edited. The judges will of course add more comments.
    There may be 2 or 3 good songs, but mainly the show will be boring. Guessing about 35 million people will be watching. Or more.

    I don’t think a replay of Gokey singing PYT could be considered a tribute to anything other than bad karaoke. Although there are parts of this episode that I would like to see again, I believe there are probably a million better ways that Fox could pay tribute to a musical legend.

    “Everybody” is doing Michael Jackson tributes. The airways were full of them last night…CBS, NBC. And they all showed snippets of Michael’s songs.

    Just to be clear…somebody will be getting money for any videos aired during all of the other “tributes” and it won’t be the Jacksons. And all of the other stations, especially the “news” stations are staying with the story because it brings in viewers which translates to revenue.

    “Altruistic” is not a word that is often used in the entertainment/news industry.

    I disagree. Part of a tribute to him means showing how his music continues to resonate, to be enjoyed, to be interpreted, and to be introduced to a whole new generation. How many youngsters hardly knew anything about MJ before hearing these songs on idol? And just as so many of these singers state him as a major influence, showing them sing and interpret his songs is just a testament to the power of them.

    I’ll be at David Archuleta’s summer tour during this time, so I won’t be watching…but I think it’s a really nice gesture for FOX. I’m still slightly in shock.

    I feel a little cynical about Idol airing its MJ repeat in that it seems self-serving. But then, not any more so than MSNBCNNHLN, etc. round-the-clock coverage. As such, it is a tribute, as entertaining as any other and worthy of a second look.

    Although, I also feel like saying that comparisons of MJ’s talent to that of any notably talented Idol contestant of choice or wishes of MJ superstardom for that favorite Idol should be made with caution.

    MJ was a legend in the making from an early age. There is no comparison — none — in my opinion, to any American Idol contestant. The way Idol spawns its “stars” is very different than the way MJ evolved (and probably healthier for the performers, although association with this corporate monolith tends to rob them of their “cred”), groomed for performing stardom from an early age (in not the gentlest of ways) and nurtured by the Mowtown machine that was very different from, but probably equal in power and influence over time, to AI.

    Michael’s talent was a gift that was exploited by others, and gave him fame and power and twisted him to the point that it ruined his career that ultimately impacted his health (again, my opinion). Think Judy Garland, among others gone too soon, and tragically. Elvis, too, but not so much since he was not known to have been exploited as a child performer and rose to fame as an adult.
