Taylor Hick’s recent triumphant turn on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, joining Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon to send up the ubiquitous You Tube meme, “Friday”,   got me  thinking about similar appearances by past Idols that were also, hip, funny and self-referential.

Appearing in the skit was a total win for Taylor because it showcased him as a cool, funny guy, totally able to laugh at himself–pretty much the criteria I used to pick some clips.

I went through my archives and dug up 5:

David Archuleta’s recent cameo on Tosh.0, Clay Aiken’s funny guest appearance on 30 Rock, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen’s post Idol appearance on Best Week Ever, Brooke White’s parody commercial on BWE, and Sanjaya Malakar’s Top 10 appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Have some weekend Fun Fun Fun watching the clips, in no particular order, after the jump.

Video After the Jump…

David Archuleta on Tosh.0

The teenage girls who uploaded a video of themselves freaking out after David Archuleta came in second to David Cook on American Idol took part in a Tosh.0 “Video Redemption”.

The girls are good sports and in a clever send-up of the movie Seven, David makes a very surprising cameo at the end.

Clay Aiken on 30 Rock

Clay Aiken joined Mary J. Blige and Elvis Costello on 30 Rock, in a cameo appearance that showed off Clay’s impressive comic timing.

Coerced into performing at Jack’s telethon for his long-lost dad, who is in need of a kidney transplant, Clay duets with new BFF Elvis Costello on the big, “We Are the World” type number, “Just Give Me A Kidney”! (My favorite moment).

Clay Aiken, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige need no convincing

“Just Give a Kidney”

Adam Lambert and Kris Allen on Best Week Ever

In the days after American Idol wrapped, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert dropped by VH1′s Best Week Ever for some hilarious comedy. Kris shouts the infamous YAY CAPES, and Adam answers the BIG question on all our minds…

YAY CAPES

Adam answers THE Question

Brooke White on Best Week Ever

The super-adorable Brooke White proved she could send up embarrassing moments (like starting a song over in front of millions of people on live TV) in this mock album commercial “Brooke White Stops and Starts the Classics” for Best Week Ever. Super cute!

Sanjaya Malakar on Letterman

Jordin Sparks may have won Season 6 of American Idol, but Sanjaya Malakar was, hands down, the pop culture icon of the season. After he was eliminated in 6th place, he headed to the Late Show with David Letterman to read a Top 10 list, “Things I Learned on American Idol”. No other Idol made a Letterman appearance that season.

  • n3mover

I like Taylor, but can’t stand Jimmy Fallon, so I missed the appearance. Love 30 Rock, and the one with Clay and the “Kidney Now” group was so funny.

  • jeff2683

Taylor did good and really enjoyed Clay on 30 Rock. Thanks for the videos!

  • yksask

I absolutely loved Clay’s appearance on 30 Rock, and he was terrific on Scrubs, too!

It is easy to play yourself but loved how Clay truly acted became these characters on these shows.

  • jammasta

God, I lost it when Adam said “cricothyroid” and when he looked at that one dude after the long smile. I love those videos, haven’t seen them in a while.

LMAO @ Brooke White. I saw Tosh and the Best Week Ever w/ Kris and Adam. So hilarious.

  • Grammie Kari

Taylor’s appearance was funny because of the whole set-up. The best part was him having fun and showing his talent.

    Good selections, MJ! Love ‘em!

I don’t know what it is about that Seven bit.. but everytime they spoof “what’s in the boooox!?” I just crack up. It’s so whiny and pouty.. just funny!

Good for Archie for doing such dark humor. Love it!

I also love Cookie’s man cement and the Kimmel skit. So freakin’ funny!!

  • cwm

Hahaha good stuff MJ! Thanks for these! My favorite is Adam answering the big question on BWE, and Brooke’s was particularly adorable, but they were all great.

  • rhed31

I’ve never seen that Brooke one. LOL the Tosh.0 with David was so strange but funny. I guess funny because it’s so strange.

  • lalaladybug

I also loved Clay’s skits on SNL in ’04. The promos with Megan Mullally in parady of the Janet Jackson/Super Bowl incident were riotous. Then, too, is the SNL skit about the awards show. One of Clay’s rarely seen pieces was in that backstage at The View before he co-hosted last spring. The makeup/hair gal had his hair all up in curlers and the Producer, Bill Getty, was prompting him to put his hand over the ladies mouth if they talked too much. It is such fun to be a fan of these people.

I was very busy over the weekend, so I just found this thread. This is all too much fun :)
I really liked the David Cook Links from the last page, which I hadn’t seen yet at all – ROFL – I was laughing tears.
Thanks MJ, you should make this an annual event and roll out those funny Idol related clips.

  • 1wildegirl

Kelly’s SNL skits were pretty funny. “I’m homeless and blind, but check this out!”

  • Allison

For some reason the Clay 30 rock video comes on all black for me. But I mus say I absolutely loved that “Kidney Now” episode and bought the “Just Give a Kidney” video. I still watch it now and then and just laugh.
Jimmy Fallon is just great with singing skits!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph7H6omcsuY&feature=related in the above clip, Kris was wondering at 1.44 minutes why he gets a lot of batman stuff from the fans… Seems that he forgot about the Best Ever clip he made about the “capes”.
    .
What I also like about Kris Allen at Best Week Ever is the following when he kept on singing “Apologize” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COjM-H2lPpY .start 1.55 minute.. And the host saying to Adam Keep it down you second place hehehe…
    .
But my most favorite Kradam moment is this interview in which Adam tried to say that “we are just friends” and Kris torpedoed Adam’s statement with his arm gesture… Hilarious ! Love Kradam !!
