Here is the performance order for tonight:

ETA: Caffiend is back from rehearsal. She said things went well, but that everyone, including Debbie the stage manager seemed very tense. All three seem to be in this to win. Caffiend thought that Syesha Mercado and David Cook sounded a little off-pitch tonight. Overall, The Davids had the most memorable performances. Syesha “Broadwayed” her way through all three numbers. There wasn’t a point where she really connected to what she was singing. She’s definitely gone all glam. Lots of sequins tonight.

1. David Archuleta
2. Syesha Mercado
3. David Cook

1. Judges Choice 2. Kids Choice 3. Producers Choice.

  • David ArchuletaPaula Abdul chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“And So It Goesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Billy Joel – Beautiful, best of the 3 songs he did. It was a capella for half the song. he was wearing a tie and leather jacket.
  • Syesha MercadoRandy Jackson chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If I Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Got Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Alicia Keys – She wore a sequiny gold gown.
  • David CookSimon Cowell chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Faceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Roberta Flack – He changed it up – made it a little rocky – almost unrecognizable.
  • David Archuleta – David chose: “With You” by Chris Brown – Audience loved it. Lots of interaction with the audience.
  • Syesha Mercado -Syesha chose: “Fever” by Peggy Lee – She wore a very short sequined mini-dress and sung it very suggestively.
  • David Cook – David chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The World I Knowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Collective Soul   “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot – He played guitar. He explained that he wanted to do something upbeat.
  • David Archuleta – The producers chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Longerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Dan Fogelberg – injected some runs – but still good.
  • Syesha Mercado – The producers chose: “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell – Syesha’s performances were the least memorable of the night.
  • David Cook – The producers chose: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. Strings and violins on this one.

Who’s familiar w/Switchfoot? Will we(I) like it? Is it too “Innocent” like?

    Will people know it??

I like the Aerosmith song okay – at least people will find it familiar. Please no “Innocent” moment again.

  • anibundel

Really?? REALLY??? The first person to go on top three night has gone home EVERY YEAR!
    It’s not Syesha?
    REALLY?!

  • St.Lucia

PIMP SPOT FOR DC!!!! Oh I think he has it in the bag!

I’m not familiar with Switchfoot’s catalogue of songs, but I’m familiar with the song.

Here is the youtube link for the song. I think he could do it well.

ETA: Because I’m an idiot who forgets links

Actually Jordin went first on Top 3 night and she didn’t leave.

Performance order doesn’t matter as much at this stage.

  • cheese

Here’s an awesome version of the Aerosmith song ; )

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=5WLc8S81Kek

The song change is very mysterious, since the two songs aren’t all that different. I can’t believe DC has 3 ballads.

  • Michelle

OMG. OMG. OMG. Between the new songs for DC and him getting pimpspot.

    This is gonna be good.

    Squee!

  • KrazeeK120

Ohhhhhh I’m even MORE excited for DC now! I love “Dare You To Move”!!!!!!!!!

I’m happy to be taking a vacation to Cooktardistan for the week!!!

ETA: Dare You To Move was on the Walk To Remember soundtrack. That movie came out in 2002 and starred Mandy Moore.

I’m a dork and I love that movie. No laughing.

  • http://myspace.com/bigbooty_hoes sarahjean

eh I think the collective soul choice would have been better but whatev chances are he’ll impress with switchfoot. I guess I’m just not a huge fan of that song….

    Grayhound, Here’s a link to a vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK_E7xS7AtQ

The Switchfoot song should (hopefully) go down really well. It’s not quite as difficult a song as Innocent was, but I’m not sure about Cook in his lower register… but it’s a song that builds to a great finish, and that’s his style. Switchfoot is a Christian band, so this is a pretty wise choice for Cook. (tapping into Castro’s Christian fanbase a bit, maybe?)
I wasn’t going to watch tonight, since all my horses are now gone, but I might tune in to see how this plays out. David A. singing Chris Brown should be interesting.

  • anibundel

    idolfan86:
oh, yeah. you’re right. I forgot. I am full of Fail.
I guess I just got hopeful for a minute that Archie wasn’t TCO after all.
Is It wrong of me to hope that Cook goes home this week if Archie doesn’t, so I don’t have to watch the final?

  • star

Gag on the Aerosmith song. I hate it so so so so much. I’m sure David will do a fine job with it, but ugh. Stupid producers. You would think by now I’d know to have lower expectations, but nope…I’m disappointed.

The Switchfoot song is pretty but their singer’s voice is a lot higher-pitched sounding than David’s, so I can’t really imagine how Cookie will sound on it. Interesting about the change, hmm.

Hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an awesome version of the Aerosmith song:

    Oh cheese…lawl!!

  • Trina

OMG am I the only excited about the Aerosmith song? I LOVE that song and I think he’ll sing the crap out of it.

  • Lisa

I guess I just got hopeful for a minute that Archie wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t TCO after all.

Statistically DC is in the much better position. Anything can happen though.

Nope, I am really excited to hear him sing it too! His personal choice is much better than the Collective Soul one too IMHO.

  • Lisa

    Millajoy, top line is:

Performance order, then Season 1, 2 , etc

So the first number of line two would be:
Performance Order #1, Season 1 came in 3rd, etc. same across and down the two lines. The numbers are the placement they came in as.
Next line Performance Order #2, Season 1 2nd Place, etc.

Sorry it did not translate better out of the chart, lol. Yes I’m lame, I made a chart one day of all 7 Seasons from Top 12 on, lmao.

  • Jolene

I was slightly upset about Aerosmith at first too, but I think DC will probably rearrange the hell out of that song, and the lyrics really are quite pretty under all the bells and whistles of the original. If he strips it down, it could be awesome. I don’t see this producer choice as trying to sink him AT ALL.
I’m very optimistic. I think he could shine tonight.

  • jpfan

I like the Switchfoot song. Is that Cook’s pick or the producer’s? There is something funny about Cook picking a song from a Mandy Moore movie.

  • St.Lucia

I wonder if this is the kiss of death for Archie! Or the kiss of death for the initial 1st means your are going home spot.

I’m still a little WTF over his personal song choice….Daddy obviously didn’t okay that one…

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

The Aerosmith song. Two horrifying words:

    Diane Warren

    Wait, make that three..

    Diane EFFING Warren…

Hopefully not a harbinger of things to come…

  • milajoy

I BELIEVE that the person singing 2nd on top 3 night has always been safe…

  • milajoy

Cook picked the Switchfoot song. Producers picked Aerosmith

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

I have a bad feeling DC will sing Aerosmith straight. Ugh. And the Switchfoot song, too. UGH. Rearranging the hell out of 3 songs in a week is tough, so I’ll forgive him if he sings it all straight, but I will be very disappointed nonetheless. Really, the only upside to that Aerosmith hit is the huge portion of the adult swing vote he’ll get from it.

I hope Mindy didn’t start a trend of the last person to go on Top 3 night being the one sent home. :(

  • jpfan

But David A is such a dweeb remember? And his father won’t be there arranging the song. And all he sings are boring old ballads. So why all the worry? So the dweeb picked the Chris Brown song and Cook picked a tune from a Mandy Moore movie. That is pretty funny no matter who you support.

    I edited it a tad.:)

  • NOLA

You can bet David A’s father will be there. He was banned from backstage; but he will be in that audience.

  • milajoy

Thaank you, Lisa! That makes sense! So the 2nd perfromer hasnt ever gone home.

  • daisy

blech blech to David C’s Aerosmith song, I hate hate that song.. the lyrics are pure gooey horrid mess.. and two ballady songs for him, triple blech. I don’t know the swiftfoot song, but why the change and why now?
Am so excited about Archie and his song, I turn this song up every time it’s on the radio, really good r/b song.
I love D Fogelberg, but admit the song longer not one of my favs, very wedding to me

  • http://www.xanga.com/werwanderflugen Preston

From where I am, “Dare You To Move” was VERY popular. I don’t listen to much radio, but it seems like I heard that song all over the place. I didn’t even know until later that Switchfoot was even a Christian band; I think they’re more mainstream though.

    Great choice, DC!

  • Jolene

Thaank you, Lisa! That makes sense! So the 2nd perfromer hasnt ever gone home.

Well, I guess AI really wants to break all “curses” this year.
I can’t see DC going home with these songs, and I can’t see DA going home (yet) with his rabid fanbase.

Can’t wait for it all to begin!

  • Steph

Interesting song choices! I am not going to let myself get all bent out of shape about Cookie’s song choices…or anyone’s for that matter. I just want to sit back and enjoy the show tonight. It should be a good one, and I am sooooo excited! :smile2_ee:

  • St.Lucia

I’ve decided that the Producers either do not watch the show because they have no idea who these contestants are musically, or they just have an overall horrifying music taste.

Maybe a little(or a lot) of both. I cannot stand “I don’t wanna miss a thing” by Aerosmith, and I love the band, but not that song.

  • lovegoodmusic

I think Cook has great song choices, but I am a bit worried if he had enough time to learn and change these songs.

  • sumidol

Switchfoot will catch the attention of some younger fans that might have gone with David A – they are very popular with the 14-18 year olds – Christian or not. Good move on David C’s part

  • Jolene

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve decided that the Producers either do not watch the show because they have no idea who these contestants are musically, or they just have an overall horrifying music taste.

I do agree with that, but I don’t think IDWMAT is a song choice meant to sandbag DC, which is what I’ve been dreading from the producers. I think if he changes it up, strips it down and makes it more about content than embellishment, he could score major points with that. Also, the fact that it’s so familiar could very well draw in the casual viewer, IF he doesn’t get “kareoke” slapped in his face (and I don’t think he will. Knock on wood).

  • sumidol

AND catch some of Jasons Christian fans – Switchfoot’s Meant to Live was very popular and in Spiderman

It was very popular here too, Preston. I had no idea they were considered Christian rock, so mj’s comment (I think it was her) in the other thread calling them God rock left me wondering if I was thinking of the right song. LOL

Anyway, I think David will do great with it. :)

  • Stefunny

Switchfoot is a huge band….and not just for Christian audiences. In fact, they just released a new single on Radio Disney for the new Prince Caspian movie. Dare You to Move is a great song. I think DC will do well on it. And if he is playing strategy, a good move to capture some of the fans that might’ve gone for Jason or Brooke.

    Aerosmith? Not so much. Ick.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Leave it to Nigel to pick one of the most overplayed songs of the last 10 years for Cookie. Just, UGH.

However, I love that Switchfoot song and listened to it all the way home from work to try to imagine how he would do it. I think it could be really great. Switchfoot is one of my favorite bands, so I’m quite excited. And yes, this song was pretty popular on mainstream radio for a while. Not sure where it charted, but I remember hearing it on the radio all the freaking time. And it’s not just a song from a Mandy Moore movie, lol. It was a single off Switchfoot’s album “The Beautiful Letdown.” Which is a GREAT album. ETA: And yes, they are considered a Christian rock band, but a lot of Christian radio won’t play them. “Too” mainstream for CC radio, I guess.

I love that Chris Brown song. That is the only one of his singles that I own. Therefore, I am not looking forward to Archuleta singing “Hey little mama, oooh you’re a stunna, hot little figure, yeah you’re a winner” with his eyes clenched shut and the waiter tray hand outstretched. Just, no. But at least he’s trying to show that he can be “current” or “relevant” or whatever the hell phrase you want to use. Heh.

I still associate “Fever” with Paris Bennett as one of her best (and possibly one of THE best) moments of season 5, so I’m not so keen on Syesha singing it. I will probably need to immediately go watch a youtube of Paris signing it. Oh well.

  • joydrop

That Switchfoot song is amazing! I’m so excited about tonight now that I know he’s singing that and the Aeorsmith song. OMG!!

David Cook should sing “Inside You” by Infant Sorrow.

I LOVE DC’s SONG CHOICES! I hope he owns the stage tonight. Usually, when I don’t like his song choices, he does really well. Hopefully, tonight he’ll do really well even though I like his song choices.

    Good luck, David Cook!

  • Natasha

I don’t think the Aerosmith song is that bad. I was worried Nigel would sandbag him and maybe he tried to but I’m not sure he did. We’ll see.

I love DYTM and it has Cook written all over it. It could be really good for him. I like the Mandy Moore connection because of David’s known affection for her. Heh.

That just leaves Simon’s bizzaro choice. I have no idea what to make of that one.

  • grayhound

maeflower: Belated thanks for posting the vid – I’m not real sure I like that song though, but maybe DC will convince me that I really do (or will).

Sigh. It really smells of “Innocent” to me for some reason in that it seems like a “message” song. I think people tend to like familiar songs and I suppose from what others here are saying it is familiar – but not to me.

  • amber

I just want to know if DA changes up his 2 crap songs he is forced to sing…

  • spanishfan

Good luck David Cook. I hope you blow us away again. We love you and are voting for you to win. You have 3 stunning songs and I know you will do us proud.

  • Colleen

Thank You for the David Cook update. I get serious anxiety on Tuesdays waiting for the song announcement. Hooray for the pimp spot. DC deserves it!

Just listened to Gordon Lightfoots version of, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. It’s beautiful and I can imagine DC working it perfectly.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5CGheZYaMc

David gets all my phone-in votes tonight. I’ve perfected the Two-Handed phone-in method by alternating the calls by a second to maximize the 2 hour time limit. Call it a labor of love. :king_tb:
It’s been along time since I was bitten this hard by somebodys music. Just can’t get enough Cookie!

    DCFTMFW

  • hollygo9

Dare you to MOVE! much much better…it has a good build to it unlike the Collective Soul song. Not an areosmith fan but DC has rocked much worse songs. It’s not like he has to earn my vote anymore anyway.
    I’m forever his girl.

  • folk

this is a wine night. yup. a big wine night.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

Just listened to the Switchfoot song (which I’d never heard before) and I think I’m happy it for Cookie. I do, however, agree with the concern that he may be singing 3 ballads in a row AND going last on Top 3 night. *shudders*

  • joydrop

DC is closing the night with a cheesy love song…..

    He’ll be fine.

  • folk

folkbf just weighed in that cookie has the best song of the night with dare you to move. and now, if folkbf would stop singing it i would be happy:)

  • Jolene

agree with the concern that he may be singing 3 ballads in a row AND going last on Top 3 night. *shudders*

Two of those ballads are rock ballads, which is what DC has shined best on all throughout the season (it was always the harder rocking songs that got him lukewarm comments).
And isn’t getting the pimp spot on top 3 night considered a good thing? I’m confused.

  • Lisa

I think DC will be stellar on all 3 songs. I’m personally looking forward to Yo Face and Don’t Wanna Miss. Yeppers I truly am. I don’t wanna miss a thing either, lol!

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I’m kind of half-scared now that Syesha is going to dedicate “Hit Me Up” to all the penguins in the world who have ever been the victim of oil spills, because their strength inspires her every week on Idol.

  • folk

    oh my god kat….hysterical post.

i am so going to giggle about a penguin dedication now!

  • bambambam

I feel bad for Syesha, I guess 19 could not clear any Rihanna songs so they chose Gia’s knock-off, which has been in a commercial here and there but is not really a well-known song. Unfamiliarity will hurt.

  • colette

This is ridiculous to feel this anxious about @&%*$) TV talent contest. We’re all projecting like mad on a cheesy TV show, aren’t we? Oh well, it’s better than dealing with real life….

I’m getting very VERY nervous for our Cookie. I’m just praying he doesn’t contort “First Time Ever” in ways that disable its power. A lotta people love that song, including Simon, whose reasoning here if he really supports the Cookster to win are a mystery to me.

And I’ve got to take it on faith that the Switchfoot song is going to be better than I fear. It’s a weird batch of tunes, that’s for sure.

Sounds from the rehearsal like DC has to watch his back…..David A may be again’in on him……though it’s hard to imagine Syesha overtaking either.

  • MrsTrep

Ok, so I don’t keep up with the election crap, but I hope West Va is the only state holding a primary today because I don’t want effing politics to interrupt AI tonight. I’ll be pissed!!

Not so sure about the report from rehearsal, scares me. I can’t really imagine how he might have “rocked up” Simon’s pick.

    Guess we’ll see soon….

Thanks, mj for the update, I’d been waiting on it. Now I can get a shower and get situated in front of the TV.

  • Cinemaniac86

Thanks a bunch on behalf of IDF :D . A few people are frustrated at the lack of commentary on the actual performances and what Caffiend thought about each of them, but I’m assuming that the heavy load of 3 songs a piece was a bit much to provide full commentary on. Would still like to know how each individual performance went, if you could, but this on its own is great enough! ;) .

  • folk

you can already predict the comments

archie– randy– that was teh bomb
paula- tears and blathering about how she knew it was the right song
simon- great way to start the show

    syesha-good
    good
    good

    cook
randy- i don’t know man, you changed it too much
    paula- you are you
simon- why did you not sing it like roberta flack?????

it actually could be a rough night for dc.

  • jpfan

David Cook fans need to have more faith. All he has to do is be better than Syesha and I doubt that’ll be a problem. :)

I’m sure he’ll be hearing plenty of “you’re the bomb” and “the most original Idol evah.”

Melinda (T3) and Anthony Fed (T4) are the only people to ever get booted after the pimp spot in a non-finale episode. The pimp spot is a good thing.

  • thebluemartini

    I like your thinking, grayhound!

  • Jolene

Hmm… the comments are making me a bit nervous, as does the thought of Cook “Rocking” Yo’Face. But I did think earlier that to be truly Cookie, He would rock the ballad and strip the rock anthem (Aerosmith – though I do realize it’s also a ballad). I just hope Simon takes it well. Hee.

If he doesn’t, Cook has 2 songs to rebound. Also – it’s good that the producer’s is the last song, because I think Cook has the better song out of the 3 producer choices.

Melinda was the only one booted from a pimp spot for Top 3 finalists.

I have too Trina. lol I just listened to “Dare You To Move” and I really like it. Actually, when the chorus started, that’s when I finally remembered this song. Heh!

Well, it sounds like Syesha obviously sounded like she took to heart what the judges said a few weeks ago on ALW night that she was in her element….although that does not do EVERYTHING over the top.

Oh well. I’m just wondering if she plans on saving the whales tonight.

Or maybe the increase in gas prices.

Colleen, I’m pretty sure that that is just a vid made for Youtube. Elton John wrote all the music for “The Lion King”.

    Ok, here goes:

    1. Archuleta: nice a capella, but why didn’t he play the piano? A bit boring, which is not surprising since he doesn’t know what the lyrics mean. Best part was when Simon told off the annoying waving hand girls.

Hi, everyone: Well, you’re all watching the show now, so you’ll see what everyone says. Rehearsal did go by very fast. Each song is short, and they’re cramming nine songs into an hour. The songs were so short, I don’t think any of them were outstanding. But I don’t trust my read on things anymore. The audience loved Archie and Cook best. I thought Cook had the best songs. Syesha’s songs were too showy; she should have thrown in a ballad to connect with the audience. I’ll be interested to hear what y’all think. I’ll be in chat if anyone has questions.

I am so jealous of everyone on the East coast, who is watching the show right now. MTZ is 2 hours behind you and patiently waiting!

    2. Syesha: Ok, she has a nice voice, but seriously, an Alicia Keyes song? Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s freaking Alicia Keyes. She has power. She has spirit. She has ridiculous animation. You can have a nice voice, but you canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t top Alicia. Not her fault, but it is what it is.

    3. David Freaking Cook. Beautiful. Immaculate. I’m talking about his voice. He knows what those lyrics mean. He feels it.

Why is Syesha talking like a “hot mess”?

  • annoula

    4. Archuleta: Ok, so I’m a Cook fan, so admittedly I’m biased. I’m trying to objective here. It was a good song choice. He was being young. He even had an edge in his eyes. However, Chris Brown sings it much smoother, better, with more heart. Since it’s such a recent song, the comparison has to happen. Sorry. But I will be nice and say that at least he didn’t pick another ballad, and at least he said “my boo” and “little figure.” You know his dad is going to yell at him, so I don’t want to be too mean.

    5. Syesha was ok. But nothing spectacular except for her last notes. Those were nice.

    6. David Cook: I thought it was pretty good. I hate that the song is too short, but I thought he brought some passion back that was missing from the last two weeks.

    7. Archuleta: Uh…kind of stopped paying attention. I guess it’s not his fault he gets elevator music. I don’t know, if he played the piano with it or something, it would give it some oomph.

    8. Syesha: Poor her. She sings nicely. She smiles. It’s not her fault they give her a non-American Idol type song as the last one. Oh well.
