Song Spoilers! Check ‘em out here!

David Cook is interviewed by the morning team at Mix 93.3, Kansas City. He gets choked up as he reacts to the support from hometown fans.

Check out the Video After the Jump

More videos of Cookie here. He performs “Living on a Prayer” and “Always be My Baby” with an acoustic guitar at a mini-concert in KC.

ETA: Read Fender’s first-hand account of David Cook’s morning concert here.

David Archuleta is also having a really emotional day. Here he is speaking about his experience as he’s about to sign autographs for a throng of well-wishers in Murray, UT. He breaks down in tears at one point. Fox Utah is posting videos and pictures here.

ETA: There are a bunch of Archie videos at this blog.

Syesha Mercado arrives in her hometown. She sang “Yesterday” in studio for “Good Day Tampa Bay” and is appearing at her high school for a private concert.

I was at the mini-concert!! DC both sounded and looked amazing in person.

The funny part is during “Living on a Prayer” I thought how nice it was not to have the arm swaying right in front of the stage. The producers must have read my mind though, because they started trying to get the crowd to do it during the “Always Be My Baby.” I resisted though ;)

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Fender! If you have any more deets about the concert, tell us about them! :) .

  • teege

I really enjoyed the two davids videos and i tired to give Syeshas a chance but for some reason she comes off wrong to me. I also can’t stand when people say like you know like and like I mean like so maybe that was it lol.

    Anyway thanks for the links!

Those were some nice Cookie crumbs. Thanks for sharing.

Won’t even bother to check out Jon Benet’s or Civil Rights Girl’s.

  • Fender

    Alright, here goes!

The crowd was very into it, even before Cook arrived and came on stage. The producers gave us the whole speech about how the show would be on TV and cheer like crazy the whole time, wave your arms, hold up your signs, blah blah blah. The crowd certainly didn’t need encouragement though – it doesn’t really come off on the video how intense nearly everyone was. I’m a huge DC fan, but I can’t even come close to most of these people. One women nearly collapsed after the show when he touched her hand. No joke.

Before he came on stage they had a message from the Governor declaring it David Cook Day in the state of Missouri, how happy everyone was to celebrate his success, and then mentioned David’s brother had brain cancer and asked people to consider donating money. The whole thing was very incongrous. Cookie wasn’t on stage yet, but it would have been interesting to see his reaction. Then a city councilwoman came out and declared it was also David Cook Day in Kansas City, and that meeting him was the coolest perk of her job (LOL).

Then he walked out to what seemed like never ending applause. The councilwoman was trying to speak, so DC did the kind of lowering the hands quiet down motion, and it resulted in instant silence. He seemed to think that was hilarious, so he did the pump up raising of the arms – instant chaos. Then he quieted the crowd down again, and was awarded his certificates.

He then talked a bit about how grateful he was for everything and all the support. He said this was the best day of his life (which is pretty impressive, because it was only 11:30), and he was “shocked so many people came to watch me stumble through a few songs.” He sang “Living on a Prayer,” then stopped again to repeatedly thank everyone and just kept talking about how amazing all the support was. He seemed genuinely shocked, grateful, and overwhelmed by the crowd/support (he’s going to be in for a big surprise this afternoon with the parade!). Then he sang “Always Be My Baby.” Of course, this was when the producers tried to get us to “mosh” American Idol style – nothing like a little off-tempo waving. Both songs sounded amazing – I thought he sounded better in person than on my TV.

After that he apologized that he only had two songs prepared, and said he would “make a deal” with the crowd. He pointed to the Sprint Center (which is the big arena in Kansas City, and right across the street from where he was performing), and said he would put on an awesome show for everyone when the tour came there – “And who knows, if you keep voting – which I hope you do – maybe I’ll even get to perform last.”

Then they started taking him offstage on the right side, and everyone surged over toward there. I stayed put, kind of laughing at the madness, when they suddenly changed direction and starting cutting through the audience (I think the producers wanted the video of the insanity). So, through pure chance, Cook walked directly by me, and I didn’t even have to fight the masses. He is even cuter in real life, especially from a foot away ;)

He was pretty well mobbed then by autograph seekers, as the producers/security kept trying to hustle him away. I think he threw their entire schedule off because he kept stopping to sign autographs (I actually think he talked more before/between/after the songs then they wanted him to, as well). During all this I walked around the about 40-deep crowd looking for autographs, and was going to leave, when I actually walked right by his Mom and younger brother, who was joking about how he was also available for pictures and autographs – “I’m the reason he’s here, after all.” It was pretty funny.

As a whole, it was a ton of fun. DC was incredibly happy, excited, grateful, humble – just overall shocked at all the support he was getting, I think. He also seems like a pretty funny guy from all this comments. The whole experience did nothing but add to my DC love.

Sorry about the novel – hopefully someone enjoys all the details! If anyone has any other questions or anything let me know!

He is about to do 3 songs – streaming live:

I’m watching David Cook live right now.
The mayor is giving him the key to the city.

I wonder how that tradition started?

  • JulieR

What Fender describes above is awfully similar to what I’m seeing at the link I provided above. He’s getting the key to the city now and will perform. Could this be a loop?

Fender – did you see him get the key to the city? lol

  • sciencefan

Anybody have a live feed for Archie?

  • Fender

Haha, nope no key to the city. Maybe they just decided to do it the same since they already have the routine down?

Particularly if it’s close the same, I’m glad I went to the event this morning instead of this afternoon.

  • NOLA

Look at the size of that Archuleta crowd! WTG, Kiddo!

  • sciencefan

The crowds appear to think that behaving like the mosh pit wavers is a GOOD idea!!!

  • grrrr

Foo Fighters- awesome! :D Now I kinda wish he’d sing Everlong.

(He sang “My Hero,” btw, for the people that aren’t watching.)

  • ziggy

    David Cook “My Hero” AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

    Just absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!

  • cheese

“My Hero” sounded beautiful. He mentioned that he was going to sing it on the show (and I guess decided not to, couldn’t get it cleared, whatever)

  • St.Lucia

I’m glad to hear that on my local news, a car rental company donated a 15 passenger van to David’s brother Adam, and they drove out to Blue Springs, MO today for the homecoming activities.

I thought that was really nice!

  • Trina

That performance of “My Hero” made me cry. Wow. What a VOICE.

  • gumby

My Hero is my new favorite performance. Maybe he’ll change his mind and sing it on Tuesday instead of Collective Soul. *hopes*

ETA: Archie = Jon Benet tee hee!

  • bean99

I didn’t watch the video but enjoyed your writeup, Fender. It must have been exciting for David and his fans. :smile1_tb:

  • Pam

    Trina,

That performance was just beautiful! I never imagined he could hit notes like that! Amazing!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Wow wow wow at DC’s performance of “My Hero”. I wonder if that was a possible choice for IGB week and he wasn’t able to get it cleared??

  • Jolene

“My Hero” made me cry too. I immediately thought about Adam. I really hope a good audio of that is available soon, because my media recorder screwed up half way through, and I want to hear it again! On repeat, if possible.

What an amazing day for David Cook, and what a joy to be a DC fan on a day like this.

  • cheese

The “My Hero” video is up at the myfoxkc site now.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Wow! David’s version of Foo Fighters “My Hero” was amazing! And I love the original. Too bad he didn’t get to do that on the show. ETA: Thanks Fender!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Wow! Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version of Foo Fighters à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heroà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was amazing! And I love the original. Too bad he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get to do that on the show.

I’m crossing my fingers and HOPING that they can get it
cleared for the tour. Hey, a girl can dream, right??

  • baxter

IF Nigel the Butthead wouldn’t stretch to get My Hero cleared he only has myself to blame for the falling ratings. Step up and pay for the rights to these more recent songs. That version DC did was just fan-freakin-tastic. I’m with Sarah on this, I have a feeling that was the song he wanted to sing during IGB week.

If it was the Foo Fighters that said no…well ya big dummies. Nothing like turning down a bit more exposure and some cash in the bank.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

There’s coverage of Archie’s visit today at this blog

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

“This is rain, and here it is.” LMAO.

Oh, my gosh. I’ve always loved My Hero, and here we are with who is possibly my favorite contestant by a mile to step foot on the Idol stage, freaking performing an awesomely-done acoustic version of it. AAHHH.

I wonder if that was a possible choice for IGB week and he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t able to get it cleared??

Aww, possibly. Sigh. That would have been amazing, to say the least.

  • abbysee

What an incredible day for three very talented people. Glad that they are getting the recognition they deserve. Little David getting so overwhelmed makes me teary eyed. For all of the speculation, this young man loves to sing, and his surprise at the turnout is so innocent and touching.

  • Jolene

Fender, thank you so much for taking the time to give us a full, detailed account of your experience from today. I had a great time reading your post.

Could anyone who’s more familiar with AI than me tell me how much footage from the homecoming makes it to the air?

  • Jovi

Jolene, it won’t be as much as it should be from the homecomings making it to the air. They have to have that stupid senseless banter between Ryan and the judges, namely Simon. They have to have plugs for whatever Fox TV show celebrities may be in the audience. They have to plug the tour, the finale, give some credits to the IGB show and numbers. They have to plug Coke, Ford, AT&T, etc. You are better off watching whatever videos are out there.

  • grrrr

Could anyone whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s more familiar with AI than me tell me how much footage from the homecoming makes it to the air?

Unless I’m misremembering, each contestant’s segment seemed about 3-4 minutes long?

This probably doesn’t belong here, but I’m not sure where I would put it. I’m watching Idol Wrap right now and they had the Top 3 pick their dream mentors:
Syesha- Alicia Keys (interesting considering her judges’ pick song)
    Archie- Stevie Wonder (duh….)
David- Sinatra (leave it to him to come up with the most interesting choice)

  • Chicago-sally

David is NOT bald; so why does he comb his hair that way?

Saw the Syesha school performance and she is definitely a jazz and Broadway singer.

  • Jolene

Huh, I almost forgot Syesha had a homecoming too.

    Unless Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m misremembering, each contestantà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s segment seemed about 3-4 minutes long?

Thank you for the info, Jovi and grrrr. That time frame is actually better than what I would have predicted.

In a perfect world, I would hope that just for one week they won’t have to make a Ford commercial, and that this would be the week. Alas, knowing TPTB, They probably think having homecoming + Ford + Studio version + 3 new songs in one week is quite a reasonable demand from a human being. *sigh*.

  • Lisa

Oooo check out this pic of David tossing out the first ball tonight! WOW!

David is NOT bald; so why does he comb his hair that way?

He is balding. Very much so.

  • Jolene

OMG, someone on the scary boards watched the game, and she said Cookie threw a strike with his pitch!
Is there anything this man can’t do?

And those pics sent me to Cook Heaven. Thank You Lisa!

He is balding. Very much so.

He might be starting to, but I’d hardly say it’s anything dramatic. I think his hairline is just high, and it was looking the same in much older pics.

PS – Anyone seen that TMZ article about DA’s dad being banned from AI now?

  • wfowfowfo

Dad-chaletta in trouble? um… why is that funny to me? What an ass. Not that TMZ is a credible source– but I feel for the kid, Little D doesn’t need that stress and I’m not even a fan.

  • thesheriff

Is it true Simon picked “first time, ever I saw your face” by Roberta Flack for DC or was that a joke on TMZ i saw?

  • GwendolynD

    True, sheriff.

  • Jovi

Lisa, thanks for the link for the pictures.

That song choice is a true one.

so is that TMZ article true and is there a link to it?

  • thesheriff

Thanks. THat’s exciting to me. Any word on the other 2?

“If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys for Syesha (Randy)
“And So It Goes” by Billy Joel for Archie (Paula)

    MLB

Article on David Cook at the Royals game tonight from the team’s website.
I wish they had put up video of his singing Take Me Out to the Ball Game but so far, no.

I In my opinion, Cook’s emotional state today was likely heightened by having Adam Cook and that branch of the family there to share in this special experience with him. (Even though Fox Channel 4 mentioned on air that Adam did not attend all the day’s events with David, but did attend some.)

How wonderful for the whole family and that must have made this wonderful day even more perfect for David Cook. I’m sure he was genuinely moved by his fan support but he seems to be more emotional when Adam is there as well.

I especially loved hearing his Foo Fighter’s song “Hero” today but thought both his mini-concerts were great (I watched online NOT in person.)

Someone said there were three radio interviews today but I have only found 2 online (93 & 95) Thanks MJ for the video of the 93.3 one. Does anyone have a third one with a link?

  • dcismyfav

David Cook singing “My Hero” was just amazing and left me wishing for an acoustic version on American Idol.

If he sang his acoustic version of “My Hero” on American Idol, I think he’d have it in the bag!!!

  • colette

Have to add this YouTube link — it’s a close-up video from a fan of Cookie singing “You’ll Always Be My Baby” (the TV version is a very long overhead shot).

What’s lovely here, beside his impeccable guitar playing and vocals, is seeing him to react to the crowd singing heartily along.

what do you want to bet it was the first time in this guy’s life that a crowd this big listened to him, let alone sang along with him?

  • colette

Also, Rebecca, they put up a video on the Kansas City Fox station of him singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the Royals game, but I couldn’t get the sound to work!! Sometimes major league teams are very weird about letting this stuff be seen. I looked forever to find LaKisha’s version of the National Anthem at a Detroit Tigers game, and finally gave up.

  • judy

Just watched Syesha’s Summertime performance. whew, that was bad. I still can’t figure out how she made it this far.

David Cook rocks, period. love, love, love his voice.

  • dogncatmom

I had the good fortune to attend the Blue Springs events yesterday for DC. I got into the stadium too late to have a seat in the bleachers, so my friend and I walked to the end across from the stage and up a hill to stand and watch. Lo and behold, when Cookie came into the stadium, he walked right past us and waved and smiled at us! That was cool! He looked totally verklempt at the turnout and started crying.

His version of My Hero was absolutely fantastic! I have to say it was very touching and exciting to be part of it all and in some small way, show David the support he so richly deserves.

I think he’s gonna KILL on Tuesday…these events were just the thing he needed to see it through to the end!

Here is a fan video of David Cook throwing out the first pitch and getting an honorary score card from the KC Royals.

Here is a fan video of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” It is a little rough, but its the only one I have seen with sound. The KC Fox video doesn’t have sound, but it is closer up.
