Fifty Years of Motown - What Should the Idols Sing?

Submit to redditShare via email

Is there a musical genre more overdone on Idol than Motown? Since we’re subjected to non-stop Stevie Wonder and other Motown greats throughout the auditions, Hollywood and semi-finals, do we really need a Motown week? I say no, but what do I know?

It’s cool the kids got to go out to Detroit to meet with Motown founders, Berry Gordy, Jr and Smokey Robinson–Robinson has appeared as a guest judge and has performed on Idol, but he’s never mentored. Gordy seems intent on imparting life-lessons to his young charges. We’ll see if he’s got useful advice for the Idols.

This should be a good week for the soul boys.   Michigan guy, Matt Giraud could have a breakout week singing the music of his home state.   Ever since Matt’s Coldplay debacle, he’s kept a soulful vibe and been gaining momentum.   Anoop Desai has a strong fanbase ready to support him. All he needs to do is convince others to come along. If he keeps picking the right songs and singing them well, he could be a surprise upset in this contest.   To a lesser degree, Kris Allen could also break away from the pack, but he’s got to assert himself more–if his performances stay at the caliber of his country week “Make You Feel My Love,” he could go deep.

This week should be a cakewalk for the big voiced Lil Rounds, but stranger things have happened.   This week is Lil’s to lose.   I expect front-runner, Danny Gokey, to sail through this week.   He’s got something the people like, I don’t expect the crowd-pleasing Motown to be a challenge for him.   I have no idea what Adam Lambert will do this week, and that’s half the fun.

On the cusp:   Megan Corkrey will quirk her way through something. She could be in trouble this week.   Scott MacIntyre isn’t splitting votes with anyone at this point, he’ll pick a Motown song he can AC the crap out of, and probably advance to the Top 9.   Michael Sarver will go back to singing R&B, and will be splitting votes with Matt, Anoop, Kris and Danny.   If he’s not a standout, he’ll be in trouble. And young Allison Iraheta–I’m rooting for her.   Pick a great song, Allison, and go out there and tear up that Idol stage! I know you can do it…

As far as song choices are concerned, I’m not feeling very inspired, but I’ll give it a go.   Here’s my wish list.   It’ll never happen, but a girl could dream.

What do you think the Idols should sing?

Check out my list after the JUMP…

  • Adam Lambert – “Going to A Go Go” by the Miracles or “Dancing in the Streets” by Martha Reeves and the Vandella–Adam could bring out his inner club boy. Or, “My World is Empty Without You” by the Supremes, or “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” by Jimmy Ruffin. Dramatic!
  • Allison Iraheta – “Your Precious Love” by Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell – Allison could tear this ballad up.
  • Anoop Desai - “My Girl”, “I Wish it Would Rain” or “All I Need” by The Temptations.   I think Anoop should stick to something ballady, but with a little oomph. David Ruffin is just the thing.
  • Danny Gokey – “I’m a Road Runner” by Jr. Walker and the Allstars.   Or if he wanted to get all messagey, “Living for the City” by Stevie Wonder
  • Kris Allen – “Can I Get a Witness” by Marvin Gaye or “I Was Made to Love her” by Stevie Wonder. He can bring his guitar and do it Mraz style.
  • Lil Rounds – “Shop Around” by the Miracles or “You’ve Been in Love Too Long” by Martha and the Vandellas (Cool feminist anthem covered by Bonnie Raitt in 1973)
  • Matt Giraud – “What Does it Take (To Win Your Love) by Jr. Walker and the All Stars or “What’s Going On” by Mavin Gaye or, if that’s a little too hot a topic, “Mercy Mercy Me.”
  • Megan Corkrey -”Walk Away Renee” by the Four Tops   – Check out Vonda Shepard’s version HERE. Or, how about “Don’t Mess with Bill” by the Marvellettes? Could be very sexy.
  • Michael Sarver – “The Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson.   Somebody’s got to do it, and I think it should be Sarver. He could handle the falsetto part beautifully.
  • Scott MacIntrye – “Overjoyed” by Stevie Wonder – This AC ballad would be perfect for Scott.   Plus there’s that whole blind thing.

Going through these Motown songs, I now want TPTB to devote an entire week to Marvin Gaye.   So. Much Awesomeness…

  • lifeisfun

Adam needs to tear up the stage this week! but maybe it will be the first week where he will sing a ballad? who knows, but I hope he is entertaining and really showcases his vocals! Ha ha Does Dream girls count as motown? or maybe “and I am telling you!!!” That should be good!!!!

Scott could go w/ stevie wonder– “what a wonderful world” on the piano?
I like “my girl” for Anoop
“shop around”– too soon after David A sang it last year, maybe not?

    Allison– “it’s raining men”

Matt- anything he can make “soulful”

    idk that many motown songs

in order to get by each contestant either needs to “make it their own” and completely rearrange it and or really amaze us vocally! otherwise this will be a very painful, boring night!

  • Layla

I’m so excited…I love Motown songs…they all just make me feel GOOD.

I do agree with you though MJ, a week of Marvin Gaye would be awesome, and with that love in mind, I hope Adam does something by Marvin Gaye…almost anything except “Let’s Get It on or Sexual Healing.” Hee.

  • wordnerdarchie

Well, I guess we know who the favorite of TPTB is. Front row, center, Lil with Danny, Megan, Adam, and Allison, next in line.

  • b1dev

Danny might do Heard it Through the Grapevine as well

  • Jx223

Here is some suggestions I have:

    Matt Giraud
-Something by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. I think that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ooh, Baby, Babyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I second that Emotion.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would be good song choices for him. He could play one of them at the piano and give a good soulful performance.

I think that Scott should do something by The Commodores. I think that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Three Times A Lady.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would work for him. He could play at the piano at least one more week in a row and do this song. And since he mentioned that he has been losing out on some song choices, that he wanted, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that he would have to worry about that with this song. I don’t think that anyone else would challenge him for this song. And I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s right up his alley.

I think that Scott could possibly end up giving a charming enough performance on this song, to make it through for another week.

Megan- I think that Megan should do something by the Supremes. Like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Baby Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hurry love.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I think that songs like that would be the best songs for her voice.

Lil and Allison can do something by Mary Wells. I think that Lil could have fun with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Guy.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and do a decent version of that. I think that Alison could do something with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Two Lovers.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and show maybe a different side of her voice. And/Or she could arrange it into a more of a Rock version and that could work.

Anoop- I think that this is a week where Anoop could really shine and do well. It is right up his alley. I think that while he could do some of the newer Motown artists like Brian McKnight and Boys II Men(which a lot of people have said they want him to do), I think he should sing a classic Motown song. I think that he could do well singing something by someone like Marvin Gaye, and because ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Motown week, he wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to worry about being called old fashioned.

He could also do something by Stevie Wonder, maybe something off the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Songs in the Key of Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ album. I think that he could also possibly pull off à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You really got a hold on me.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I think that Danny could do something by Marvin Gaye. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if he would sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Get It on.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ But I think a song like that would suit his voice. I think that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be Doggoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ could be another good choice for him. I also think that he could pull off à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I wish it would rain.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by the Temptations.

Kris could do something with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Distant Lover.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Unlike some of Marvinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s other songs, that I feel would be too big for Kris I think that he could arrange this one in a way that will suit him.

I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have any idea what Adam will choose but I think that could something really cool with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tracks of My Tears.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure what Michael should sing, maybe a slow Stevie Wonder song to show off his voice.

  • tanigue

i just hope nobody will do overdone motown songs like midnight train to georgia, for once in my life or ain’t no mountain high enough.

and oh, somebody please do SEXUAL HEALING! Matt, maybe?

  • http://binog.blogspot.com/ binog

Allison can make any material work for her. I hope America sees that. Please vote for Allison! She totally deserves to be in the top 3.

  • geekygirl

Found a website with all the Motown catalogue, had forgetten they signed a few more modern artists so it will be interesting to see if they stick with classic motown. It also made me want to go out and buy a few albums! Showing my age here, I mean cds..

I will LMAO if Adam does “Brick House.” Now how camp could he make that!

We got a lot of balladiers (is there such a word) so I figure they can draw straws for the usual, expect “ohh baby baby, all in love is fair, endless love,” etc. Little nervous about these ballads tho, wasn’t it Kai who sang Jimmy Ruffin and got slayed by Simon?

I can see Matt G doing “Mercy Mercy Me” ala Robert Palmer

I’d like Lil do some Gladys altho I think Allison could rock up “Midnight Train to Georgia” Lil may decide to shout “Ain’t no Mountain”

Lots of songs will suit Danny so no guesses there.

Don’t care what Meg murders. She is so damn frustrating, such a nice tone to her voice, been given a lovely instrument, just doesn’t know how to play it.

So much goooood stuff in the back catalogue of Motown, I am assuming as they are promoting it that most songs will be cleared. NO excuse for picking a dud this week. The upbeat Motown is going to be tricky to pull off, if they don’t bring the energy the songs need they will fall flat because basically they are pretty simple melodies and repetitive.

  • bean99

I can’t begin to guess what they should do this week. I don’t even like Motown but do think several can do well with this theme. I’d like to see Anoop doing something upbeat this week but not gimmicky. Not a fan of “My Girl” so that’s not one I’d pick. I just hope they have some good choices and not from a narrow list.

  • cheese

I’m excited about Motown for some reason. I know they’ve done the same 15 songs over and over, but still.

Adam: “I Can’t Get Next to You” (Temptations) or Shotgun (Vanilla Fudge version)

Lil: “Heatwave” or “Come See About Me”

Danny: “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”

    Allison: “Nowhere to Run”

Megan: “Jimmy Mack” or “My Guy” (Mary Wells)

    Michael: a ballad, not sure

Anoop: “I Was Made to Love Her,” or “You Really Got a Hold On Me” (I don’t think Boyz II Men or Brian McKnight will be on the list)

Scott: My Cherie Amour or Easy

Not sure about Kris and Matt, but I think they’ll do fine.

  • bambambam

Some of the more “recent” songs, relatively speaking, that could have possibilities –

“It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye To Yesterday” – Boyz II Men
“I Love Your Smile” – Shanice
“”The Boss” or “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross

and there are covers that originated on Motown in non-hit versions

“Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home) – Paul Young
    “Dreamin’ ” – Vanessa Williams
“Unitl You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do” – Aretha Franklin

But I’m sure the researched list doesn’t go that deep. So another helping of Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch it is…

  • flicker

In his interview with EW, Matt said he has a surprise for Motown week. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does. I’m cautiously optimistic that he can do really well, since he grew up on this music.

  • t2

Last time Matt had a surprise, it was ColdPlay…and then he went back into the box the judges have built for him…at which point I lost interest.

Would love to hear Megan’s unique style on Until You Come Back to Me. Hey, at least she’s interesting without TRYING to be different.

I love “Oh How I Wish It Would Rain” so someone good better sing it. Kris or Anoop maybe.

Could care less what Little or Mumbles Iraheta sing.

What will the love child of Sam Harris and Joel Grey sing? I hope he goes back to the rock vibe, whatever it is and DO NOT LOSE THE MELODY to a Motown song.

There must be something insprirational for Danny to sing — probably something Stevie Wonder — Livin for the City maybe so Simon can compare him to Taylor again.

Can you tell I am losing interest in this year quickly because at the end of the day the judges will push Adam/Little/Danny (they have already sacrificed Alexis poor girl) and they will dis whoever is coming close to those three in numbers — probably Matt and Kris first, then the others.

  • sr4mjc

Adam really needs to bring on a ballad. Not sure if Motown week is the week to do it, but the doubters should see him actually belt out a ballad. I would love to hear Mercy Mercy Me.

  • idolkiwi

Adam: In his “confessional ” this week, Adam talks enthusiastically about one of his major musical influences—-Mother’s Finest. Speculation is that’s where he’s going for Motown.

He also says he’s “working on toning his music down to an intimate song, it’s a real challenge but he will surprise us in a few weeks.”

On a lighter note…a popular suggestion for Adam – SEXUAL HEALING :lol_wp:

The rest: Don’t have a clue, but now I’m wondering about Matt’s surprise. Sounds like he’s getting on the “keep us guessing” Adam train. Smart thinking?

  • SpenserJ

Cheese kind of already read my mind on a few of these. I was also thinking Get Ready for Adam, and Heatwave for Lil. I think Jimmy Mac is an excellent choice for Megan also. But Cheese, if Danny were to actually sing the greatest of all great Temptations songs – I might kick my tv, so I’ll have to disagree with you on that one.

I’m with MJ that Michael should be the one to do the Smokey – I think he can pull it off.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“What Becomes of the Brokenheartedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Jimmy Ruffin.

This one, I’d give to Kris instead of Adam.

  • lefty

    Anoop: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Was Made to Love Her,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I really like this suggestion, cheese.

If someone does “Midnight Train to Georgia,” I really hope it’s Allison and not Lil. Allison’s the only one of the group that I would trust with that song.

  • bambambam

Oh, and ha! the original Star Search winner, Sam Harris, had his first two albums on Motown, and he did record the Patti LaBelle-inspired versions of “Over the Rainbow” and “The Bells” (written by Marvin Gaye) that won him the prize. That would be a kind of outrageous way of taking ownership of the competition, whoever tried that one on (Adam).

And I’m sure clearances would never happen, but today’s Universal Motown (or I should say post-2K) put out records like “Video” by India.Arie, “T-Shirt” by Shontelle, Akon, Lil Wayne. Ha. Someone do “Lollipop.” Of course there are no vocal showcase songs in there.

  • kimberann

I think Matt and Danny will do a good job this week. They have the soulful voices. I don’t care for Lil, but she will probably do a good job too.

  • sr4mjc

You know, Adam bringing out his inner Funk might be a good choice. Others may do alot of ballads this week, he may not want to go that route. Rumor is that Adam gave Kris is first choice and he’s doing his second choice. He could have given Kris a ballad and there is no way Kris is doing Funk.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

No one but no one should cover “My Girl” or “Sugar Pie Honeybunch” unless they want to go home. That said, I think those two are like Scott MacIntyre magnets.

If Megan takes an Amy Winehouse approach to Motown, she should be fine, I think. I still think she gets most, if not all, of Alexis’ votes. So, between her and Allison, I think she stands the best chance of sticking around.

I would love to hear Danny sing “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” He’s got sort of a George Huff rasp, and a pretty tight falsetto, so I think he could pull it off. He shouldn’t sing “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” because he’ll probably get the “repeat” criticism, as that was his audition song.

This is Lil’s week. The sky is the limit, as far as the Motown catalog is concerned. I’d love to hear “You’re All I Need to Get By” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

  • erennick

    Lil: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heatwaveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Come See About Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Do you remember Kim Locke singing this first week of the finals in S2? They gave her the red flames background and she wore a halter top-like outfit. Her husky tone was nowhere to be seen (or heard) and she almost went home. I hope there is no repeat.

  • ggdoorsfan

For my money, Idol needs to have Motown theme week as a fixture each season. It’s influence on popular culture was as significant as that of the Beatles in the 60′s, and endures into current day. The embedding of the Motown “sound” and influence in pop music and American culture cannot be overstated. What didn’t Motown influence? It’s most lasting and important influence may be the way it bridged the gap between what was at one time two separate entities – black and white music. Still can’t believe at one time our nation classified something as universal as music into such limiting and narrow categories, but different time, different place, thank goodness we’ve moved beyond that…. haven’t we? :cool1_tb:

These contestants would do well to listen and take all the advice Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy have given them. Tonight’s show will be the first one I’ve watched from start to finish, and I don’t care what song from the Motown catalogue any of the contestants will sing. Those songs are timeless, and we will really see tonight just who has “it”, because with Motown you cannot “fake the funk”, or approach these songs half assed… the wheat will be separated from the chaff tonight, and we may get the truest assessment yet of who will be going the distance…

ps.. Like Lefty, I would LOVE to hear Anoop tear into Stevie’s “I Was Made To Love Her” – my ALL TIME Fave Stevie Wonder song… Go Motown, and good luck to all the Idols!

  • poporange

I don’t know much about motown and yes it is overdone quite a bit on American Idol.

Anoop-some odd reason vocals reminds me of Lional Richie thier smooth and he is charming ..

Matt and Danny -personally no connection to them maybe thier vocals, preformances or something else missing maybe not getting a warm feeling(ego?)…Matt–this will be his moment and hope he steps away from the piano I predict high praise from the judges .

  • hollygo9

If Robert ‘Danny’ Jr. is smart, he’s looking at Otis Redding’s catalog. Something he can work that huskiness with.

  • colette

Never enough Motown, ever! The Motown catalogue, like that of the Beatles, runs rivers deep and despite the many times AI has turned to it, they haven’t exposed so many of its riches. Also, hey it’s all about the songs right? And scores of them are terrific.

I love some of the suggestions above. Wow, “The Bells”! (Check out the version by the late great Laura Nyro with Patti & Co backing on Nyro’s wonderful, forgotten covers album “Gonna Take a Miracle.”)

Danny Gokey could take on either Leon Stubbs (“Can’t Help Myself” etc) or some Marvin Gaye, but I too would LOVE to hear him do something with the grit and muscle of “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep” or “What’s Become of the Broken Hearted” or “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” This should be his week with that big manful soul voice.

I still believe in Kris Allen as a sleeper, the guy who could win it all very stealthily. Beside really sly musical chops to me his voice is the sweetest and most agile of the bunch, and he can swing it too. For him I’d go to Marvin too, possibly (“How Sweet It Is”), but the lovable, high young Stevie gives him a goldmine of material: “If You Really Love Me,” “My Cherie Amour,” “I Was Made to Love Her” or “Isn’t She Lovely?” Early songs Smokey wrote too — Kris might really take to something like “Get Ready” or “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” Go Kris, it’s always a pleasure to listen! (ain’t too hard on the eyes either, bro)

Adam could tap the weirder Temps stuff — “Psychedelic Shack,” anyone? Or how about gettin’ wacky with “Do You Love Me?” or another novelty? I’d be really, really careful about “Sexual Healing” or “Let’s Get It On” or the other more graphic stuff. I think people are (hurray) excepting Adam for who he is but if he really spreads the flambo stuff onstage there could be a little prob-lem. If I could have my way though, I’d adore him turning “Don’t Mess With Jim” by the Marvelettes” into a gay mini-opera……

Honestly, the only other one I’m truly curious about is Lil Rounds. I keep waiting to have my aha! moment with Lil, in that black-soul vein she seems to be coming from. But I had it much, much, much earlier (like way back in Hollywood Week) with Ruben, Fantasia, Melinda, LaKisha, Jenifer, et al. I like the Martha Reeves idea — “Heat Wave,” “Dancin’ in the Street.” Or maybe show us some sensuousness with a Marvelettes tune. Don’t know how much there really is to this singer.

Allison can sing whatever, but please don’t shout it out girlfriend. I’d like to see you avoid vocal surgery before the age of 18.

Anoop should stay upbeat, avoiding the pitchy ballad problems. Maybe “Just My Imagination” for Scott? I don’t know, I still really don’t know how much voice this guy has. He does nada for me musically.

As for Matt Giraud, please turn me on with your next performance Mr. Matty! I tend to hear over-gimmicky and undistinguished when you perform, a second rate Jason Timberflake.

And Megan, it’s just a matter of time baby. Maybe if you play your hair right, they’ll save you. But if you want to do me a favor, sing something your little voice can’t touch with a barge pole and then you and your tatoos can toddle off. How about butchering “My Girl/Guy”? that should do it!

The sky is the limit, as far as the Motown catalog is concerned. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to hear à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re All I Need to Get Byà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Thanks Gwendolyn… How did I forget about this one? Marvin and Tammi… IMO, two of the best duet partners in music… ever. And this song? Exquisite…

  • tanigue

is Band of Gold a Motown song? cuz Allison could nail it.

  • abbysee

I am excited about Motown, it’s a diverse catalog if it were fully utilized nobody would worry about song choice as there is something for everyone. I mean Marvin Gaye and the Supremes both did show tunes records in the day. Marvin Gaye did a crooner record, a la Sinatra. I have it, it was good, but Marvin was better being Marvin.

Danny – It’s the Same Old Song or Baby I’m For Real
Matt – Mercy Mercy Me 0r Tears of A Clown
Michael – Hello or Endless Love
Scott – Your are the Sunshine of My Life , or You’ve Made So Very Happy
Anoop – Let’s Get it On, or Tears of a clown
Allison – Heat Wave or Dancing in the Street
Megan – Cruisin or Come and Get These Memories
Lil – Neither One of Us – Don’t Leave Me This Way
Kris – The Bell or Oooh Baby, Baby
Adam – Heard it Through The Grapevine or Tracks of My Tears

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I actually saw a picture of Danny playing piano with Matt. So…I’m wondering if he’ll ever play on the show, or if he’s waiting for Scott (crutch) and Matt not to play?

  • sma11ie

Oh my, I really don’t know anything about Motown. I hear a smattering of songs/artists that are familiar, but 90% of what’s been mentioned don’t ring any bells for me. Cool, this week will be a surprise for me! Fresh ears :). I’m happy to hear Matt has a surprise for us. Scared, but happy, because he needs to take risks or he’ll be in danger really soon. I think he’s the least popular of the vote-splitting soul boys. He’s my favorite based on potential alone– but I see so much potential in him that it’s frustrating that he hasn’t shown it fully yet.

I’d like to hear something from Allison that’s a bit more melodic. I don’t necessarily need to see a softer side ala Paula, just a song that’s not all scream-shout (IMO). Actually, now that I think about it, I’m interested to see what all the contestants do this week, except Scott, Sarver, and Megan. The rest of them all have the potential to knock it out of the park this week. Neat. Too bad it’s on Wednesday, which means I’ll miss the live show.

  • Layla

I am so excited for Motown…hope the list for song selections is a long deep one.

I just thought about a great song for Adam: “Purple Raindrops” brilliant song by Stevie Wonder ..I think he was 12 when he recorded it…one of his first, if not THE first song he recorded.

  • gingerly

I love Mowtown so much more than I love these contestants. I’m going to watch but I’m totally unconcerned at this point what anybody will sing. There’s just not one left who makes me care. Maybe they will surprise me. Maybe somebody will arise out of the ashes and make a season for me…meh I totally doubt it.

  • sunchick

I will LMAO if Adam does à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Brick House.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Now how camp could he make that!

:laugh_tb: That song will forever remind me of Dance Dance Revolution, Level 1. But I kinda love the idea. SHake it down shake it down now. I think I’m on the “bring on da funk” bandwagon for Adam, and save the simple ballad for another week or two.

    Someone on TWoP also pointed out that Motherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Finest covered Smokey Robinsonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Mickeyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Monkeyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ! Hmmmmà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

    Here is their version:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFnkCvP1fto

Love this idea as well. (Which means he’ll probably go ballad. Heh.)

I bet Matt’s surprise involves not playing the piano. I kinda expect him to tap into the whole White Chocolate (was that what they called themselves) vibe from Hollywood.

If Danny tries Lets Get It On I wil throw up a little in my mouth.

Kris needs to be a little more uptempo and work the stage. Lil should probably kill this week.

I personally think Motown is a far better choice of theme than Country lol! No guesses for me but I hope they stay away from Aretha and actually pick up a Jackson 5 song…..that’d be my one wish.

I kinda want Anoop to sing “Let’s Get it On.” I think that could be pretty entertaining.

    “almost anything except à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Get It on or Sexual Healing.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Hee.”

Oh lord Layla, I hope he doesnt do either of these ! I just need Scott to go bye bye next week, the others are all coming and bringing it now, he hasnt yet, dont know if he really can. He is a watered down version of Archuleta, a balladeer without the pipes – I swear I find him just adorable and huggable but not very entertaining, except when he is up there talking, he is precious so maybe that is what is keeping him in? Allison I also need to see a softer yet strong side now, along with Adam – to showcase their crazy good vocals.

“is Band of Gold a Motown song? cuz Allison could nail it.”

Yes for allison and track of my tears for Adam, thats what I’m talkin about!

  • ggdoorsfan

Danny Gokey singing “Super Freak? :devil_tb: Now THAT Motor City ditty from Rick James would be a show stoppah!! He could throw in at the end, a la Dave Chappelle, “I’m Danny Gokey, b____! (ya’ll know the word!) BWAHHHHH

  • SpenserJ

is Band of Gold a Motown song? cuz Allison could nail it.

As in the Freda Payne song? Then no – it was recorded after the Holland/Dozier peeps left Motown on another label. Although, most of the studio musicians on that record are from the “funk brothers” who were the studio musicians on most of Motown’s hits.

So, it wouldn’t be available for this. Although, I must point out that as a small child this was my very favorite song LOL.

Thanks Gwendolynà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ How did I forget about this one? Marvin and Tammià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ IMO, two of the best duet partners in musicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ ever. And this song? Exquisiteà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Agreed. ALthough, I think if Lil’s going that route, I might like to hear “If I Could Build My Whole World Around You”. Love that song.

No one but no one should cover à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Girlà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sugar Pie Honeybunchà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ unless they want to go home. That said, I think those two are like Scott MacIntyre magnets.

For me, these songs are always lame when sung by a single person. Of all of the Temps and Four Tops tunes – these are the two that I believe most require that multi-part group thing to make them work. I’ll be fine if Scott sings either, because that may be his ticket home LOL.

If Robert à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Jr. is smart, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s looking at Otis Reddingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s catalog. Something he can work that huskiness with.

I think Otis would actually be best for Matt. Specifically, “I’ve Been Loving You for too Long”. It pains me to say it – because I’m not a Matt fan – but I think he could actually do well on that one.

  • bambambam

Aretha and Otis Redding are not Motown, and neither is “Band Of Gold,” which was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland after they left Motown in a royalty dispute.

I’m tired of Gokey’s self-exploitation, but he’s the one in the group who could kill “I Can’t Get Next to You,” and sing the vocals of three different Temptations lead singers with his wide range.

I only wish “Come and Get these Memories” would excite the viewership at large the way it excites me. Unbelievable lyric.

And “Stuck on You” would be a fantastic choice from Lionel Richie’s songbook, blues, soul and Ray Charles flavor. The bit about “coming home to stay” shouldn’t scare anyone away. Elliott Yamin broke that lyric jinx by performing “Home” by Michael Buble and staying on.

Can you tell I am losing interest in this year quickly because at the end of the day the judges will push Adam/Little/Danny (they have already sacrificed Alexis poor girl) and they will dis whoever is coming close to those three in numbers à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ probably Matt and Kris first, then the others.

Well it’s not like the same thing doesn’t happen every season.

I’m not very excited about this theme. I think Adam was quoted in an interview as saying his favorite Motown artist is Marvin Gaye, and ever since I’ve been fixated on the idea of him singing “What’s Going On.” I think “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” would be good too.

hmmm I never heard Danny’s “wide range.” Care to enlighten me? I don’t pretend to be an expert so I leave it to those who profess to be experts. But according to those experts at Idol Ranges, Danny’s range isn’t anything at all to write home about. In fact, even with my limited knowledge of ranges, I always felt his claim to fame was knowing his limits.

    Megan: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jimmy Mackà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Guyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Mary Wells)

Hah, I just looked that up…Danny’s range so far is 10 steps. Even Kris’s is 11, and he’s supposed to be incredibly weak by comparison. You make a good point, gingerly.

I like a lot of these suggestions, I guess just because I love the music. I’m hoping for some variety (songs we haven’t heard every season without fail), some crazy awesome from Adam, and something breakout for Kris and Allison.

Oh, and that the show were on tonight instead. Grr.

I find myself wondering if this list is limited to the Motown label– there are many great r & b songs that were from Philly and New York. (The O’Jays, The Manhattans) Also, the rock group Rare Earth recorded for Motown. I Just Want to Celebrate; Hey, Big Brother; and Get Ready could be waiting to be rediscovered by the right singer.

I so agree. But I’d also say that nobody has any way of knowing that a contestant has such an amazing range…unless they sang it. I also said that I haven’t heard an amazing range from Danny. I said his claim to fame, for me, is that he knows he has no range and does well with that fact. I’m not about to back down from that right now.

And yeah, Star, you’re right, this happens every year…sigh…but for some reason, it bugs at the moment. Maybe it’s just the whole predictability of it….

Please no. I know nothing of Danny’s range, but it would be heartbreaking to see Danny dork his way through that song. Plus – you can’t try and perform this song in the fashion the Temps did it. What made it interesting was that all five of them each did a part, completely differently. That would be tough to pull off for anyone. If an AI contestant wants to sing this particular tune – I suggest they listen to Al Greene’s version.

And, I have no clue why I keep trying to convince myself that Otis Redding is an option here. Perhaps because he sits next to Marvin in my CD collection LOL.

Well considering they’re making a big deal about it being the 50th Anniversary of Motown, I’m 99.9% sure they’re only allowing Motown songs by Motown artists that were recorded under the Motown Label.

Why else would they go out of their way to fly the Idols to the original Motown recording studios and get advice from Motown founder Barry Gordy?

  • kerfuffle

GwendolynD: If Megan takes an Amy Winehouse approach to Motown, she should be fine, I think. I still think she gets most, if not all, of Alexisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ votes. So, between her and Allison, I think she stands the best chance of sticking around.

I actually think Allison will pick up the vast majority of Alexis’s votes, rather than Megan. They (Alexis and Allison) both have very powerful voices, and seem, from the posts I’ve read to “share” more fans than Alexis and Megan. I think Megan’s fans are more of a “niche” group, and not really growing as time goes on. But, I could be wrong.

And a reminder to ggdoorsfan: The show isn’t on tonight. The performance show is on Wednesday, and the result show is on Thursday.

  • lizland

I don’t think Danny has a wide range. In fact, just checked Idol Ranges and he has the second lowest. At least that he has showed so far.

Maybe that is why I don’t get all the Danny love out there. I like versatility and he sounds the same to me all the time.

  • Jayd

Where can I find the idol “confessionals”?

Thanks for the heads up Kerfuffle… :bye_tb: …goes to show you how little I’ve been keeping up with Idol this year… But the Motown catalogue will shake me out of my apathy for one night.

  • Jayd

It would be great if they would take a chance and pick something that’s not so obvious. I’m sure Anoop would do fine with “My Girl,” but it’s so overdone. People can’t help but compare him to everyone who’s ever sung it.

I agree, no “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch” please, please, please!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I so agree. But I’d also say that nobody has any way of knowing that a contestant has such an amazing range…unless they sang it.

I think the comments come from the fact that Adam can hit incredibly high notes in his chest/head voice. Those Idol Ranges are surely factoring in their falsetto vocals.

  • http://myspace.com/oakhillfoundation swthompson

Thanks for making my point. Many of the songs being bandied about in chat rooms are r&b, but not Motown. Idol has played fast and loose with categories before (Johnny Cash never popularized Always On My Mind, for instance.) So it might depend on what TPTB have in mind for their favorites.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Willie Nelson was formerly in the Opry, so “Always On My Mind” would count.

I think Motown has to be something once recorded on the Motown label, even if it was a cover of something else or has been covered on another label.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Many of the songs being bandied about in chat rooms are r&b, but not Motown.

I’m guessing that’s because folks not real familiar with the Motown catalog are mixing up songs that don’t belong there.

The Idols might be able to slip in a non-Motown song that was covered by a Motown artist, but I’m betting the list of songs is pretty strict.

  • SREEP22

please ADAM SING WAR OR WHAT GOING ON OR SUPERSTITION OR HIGHER GROUND…the only one that i an waiting for wednesday is you….

  • ggdoorsfan

That may also indicate how deeply the Motown sound has infiltrated the minds of the pop, R&B and in some quarters, hip hop culture…. Motown didn’t have every R&B act or artist on their label from that era, but there are still folks who assume or associate certain “soul” or “R&B” acts with Motown… Stax, Muscle Shoals and Atlantic produced songs with a more gritty and raw soul and R&B sound than Motown – equally stellar, equally influential, but vastly different. Hmmmm… Soul Theme Week wouldn’t be so bad either….. :)

  • Lisa

    My guesses….

Lil: If she does not do Diana Ross I will be shocked. I think the lure would be too much for her big head to resist. My choices: Theme from Mahogany or It’s My Turn.
Danny: Reach Out, I’ll Be There (The Four Tops). UGH but I can see where he might go there. Ok I also have to go here: He could also do Diana and sing “Someday We’ll Be Together” or “The Tracks of My Tears (Smokey Robinson) LOL. Could be another chance for him to whip out the dead wife pic.
Matt: What’s Going On (Marvin Gaye). I think Matt could have a great moment with this one.
Allison: I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye)
Anoop: Mercy Mercy Me (Marvin Gaye)
Adam: Higher Ground or Superstition (Stevie Wonder) although I would pay good money to see him do “Brickhouse” or “I’m Coming Out ” LMAO.
Scott: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough (Marvin Gaye)
Michael: All Night Long (Lionel Richie) have no other clue here.
Megan:Theme from Mahogany because I think she can do it and would rather her do it than Lil.
Kris: You Are the Sunshine of My Life (Stevie Wonder), cause his wifey looked pissed last week over Simon’s comment.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

All I know is that I hope we get more than the Stevie Wonder songbook this week. Variety in song choice among ALL the contestants is good, yet last week we still had 2 Carrie songs, 2 Martina songs, and 2 Garth songs. Not much variety there.

Star, I like those song ideas for Adam too. :)

  • IdolyEverAfter

I’m kind of hoping Adam would sing Tears of a Clown. I just love that song. It’s a Smokey song, so it’s up there in that high tenor/counter tenor range, but maybe not rangey enough for him.

I love me some Obama, but darn, I don’t want to wait until tomorrow for Idol!!

  • cheese

Megan will probably sing She & Him’s version of “You Really Got a Hold on Me.” This makes me sad, since it’s my favorite Motown song. I like the natural tone of Megan’s voice, but I’m starting to hate the “quirkiness” of her inflections, since I think it sounds forced.

I hope they put Allison in the pimp spot this week to save her.

Super Freak… :clap_tb: Middle America would think the devil had truly arrived on their TV screens if Adam did that song. I swear, if it wouldn ¨’t mean Adam would be a goner (would love for him to make the top 3) I would PAY to hear him do that on Idol.

Maybe Anoop could do it…he did do My Perogative”.

  • Layla

I hope NO One does a Temptations song as their songs sound so wrong without the harmonizing and special parts for each of the 4. Shouldnt be touched. David H. did okay with “papa was a rollinstone” but don ¨’t wanna see that repeated.

I hope that they don ¨’t pick songs from the same singers or groups, nor choose songs that have been done ad nauseum.

I vote Adam doing Try A Little Tenderness :smile_wp:

  • bambambam

I’m pretty sure that even if someone turned up “Try a Little Tenderness” as a cover on a Motown album, it would never get cleared because Idol and EMI Music Publishing and Universal Music are putting on this show to celebrate and market the Motown publishing and master catalogue.

As for Gokey’s range, I think it’s more than obvious that his effective range is demolishing every other male except Adam because they are the only two who have strength through their entire vocal interval — the “steps” referred to.

Just because the mostly mediocre males attempt feebly to sing a song through and one can count the interval of notes between the lowest and the highest notes written on the page, doesn’t mean that Anoop or whoever has more range than Danny. I’m annoyed by Danny, but his technique is flawless, and every note he attempts registers strong. Except for Adam, all of the other males have a tendency to weaken and show that their breath or their physical ability to produce and support the note are not there.

So, yeah, on paper, Danny may not have the greatest range. But they are not faxing the arrangement to the judges. They are performing under pressure. And the range of note interval and the dynamic range — the ability to control your note and nail it whether you are singing soft or loud — are two very different things. Danny’s command of all of his voice, low and high, soft and loud, is what makes him a front runner, and the lack of command is what makes us cringe when other contestants sound like they are failing.

I know I’m gonna get sicker still of Gokey’s holy-rollering, but his instrument is better than everyone’s except Adam, and he uses his more tastefully than Adam. I’m not voting for him — or maybe even anyone. Unless there is another completely arbitrary judges’ save and Mishavonna comes back to save this Season of the Damned.

I would love to hear Adam do ANYTHING by the Temptations.

Taking a Diana Ross or the Supremes songs could go well for any of the guys.

If anyone takes, “What’s Going On” and does a respectful job, it would please me.

“Just My Imagination” for Kris might work?

Maybe Danny could get away with doing, The Temptations, ” Get Ready.” Ugh.

Lil might do well with, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

Someone has to do a Smokey song. Best bet, “Tears of a Clown.” Maybe Matt.

Megan should try, “Two Lovers” by Mary Wells which is relatively easy.

I am not sure if Scott can do Stevie Wonder?

Rime for a ballad for Michael…”Three Times A Lady” by the Commdores.

How about the guys taking on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Get Next to You,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or “Papa Was A Rollinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Stone” for the Tribute (group) performance? And the girls can sing the Supremes. I can dream, can’t I?

  • bambambam

Oooohh…if someone sang the Smokey song “A Quiet Storm” it could have the same impact as “Hallelujah,” “A Song For You” or “Solitaire.” A song that was new to the vast majority of the audience, and a real discovery though conoisseurs would know it well. That would be one of the moments we’ve been hungering for.

I knew someone would bring that up! :laugh_tb:

After reading through this thread, I realized how little I actually know about Motown. :blink_tb:

Do they even need a Motown week? It’s so overdone on Idol anyway, they could probably do Sing-Whatever-You-Want Week and half of them would sing Motown anyway.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m annoyed by Danny, but his technique is flawless, and every note he attempts registers strong. Except for Adam, all of the other males have a tendency to weaken and show that their breath or their physical ability to produce and support the note are not there.

I soo disagree. His technique is not flawless, he was very pitchy last week. You could hear some strain in his voice, I certainly thought he sounded like he was running out of breath. And it sounded like screaming.

I really hope Anoop does NOT do My Girl. He sang Let’s Get it On in his high school a capella group, but I want to hear something new from him.

I always get worried when the genre is something the contestant is actually comfortable in. People have such high expectations. They usually always falter when the genre is their forte.

I really hope Anoop and Matt bring it. I’m really excited to hear what Matt’s surprise is. I actually kind of liked his Viva La Vida performance. =/

  • Qcloud9

Maybe Danny will get creative this week & do his thing with
“Super (Jesus) Freak”. LOL, I couldn’t help myself from saying that! :twisted_wp: :lol_tb:

This is inspiring – come on Matt, I am rooting for you to ruin their predictions of the top 3 !!

  • AnoopFan

Anoop Desai has a strong fanbase ready to support him. All he needs to do is convince others to come along. If he keeps picking the right songs and singing them well, he could be a surprise upset in this contest.

    I love that. Thanks, MJ!

  • AnoopFan

That Matt stuff….it’s coming from a radio station in Detroit….Of course they are going to say he got good compliments.

  • hollygo9

Adam, sing ‘I’m Coming Out’ by Diana Ross! that would be awesome!
Kris, how about a jangly guitar version of ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’?

I hope Matt does à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This Old Heart of Mineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by the Isley Brothers. I love that record sooo much!!

Skylark, me too. It’s my all-time favorite Motown song and I think it’s Ronald Isley’s very best vocal ever. I could see Matt, Danny or Michael doing a decent version.

Levi Stubbs had a voice that was powerful, dramatic and urgent at the same time, as though he was begging for his very life. For that reason, I think Adam could sing the snot out of Reach Out (I’ll Be There). I would love to hear Adam cover one of Stevie’s 1970s gems that haven’t already been done to death on AI, such as Golden Lady, Creepin’, You Haven’t Done Nuthin’, Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing — or even All in Love Is Fair or Overjoyed, which could use a Glambert makeover.

It’s too bad that Idol will never have a Phil Spector tribute week. Adam would blow the roof off with River Deep, Mountain High.

edit: and if you do that again, you’ll be put in moderation.

I agree. For me, his vocals are neither strong nor technically sound, or at least they haven’t been when I’ve seen him. (Missed audition, Hollywood, and his semi-, so I’ve seen PYT and JTTW.) Also lacking in performance skills, imo.

I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but he’s bland sounding to me. His voice lacks texture or a tone that I find inviting. (I’m no expert but I’m not tonedeaf either :-) just what I’m hearing or not hearing.) In contrast, Allison oozes vocal texture, Megan’s tone draws me in (but not her quirk), and Adam’s range, vocal technique, and performance skills are top notch.

If Adam sings All In Love is Fair, I would absolutely dial for the entire voting period. I’d forgotten about it, that would be incredible. There is also another song, lesser known by Smokey Robinson, The Agony and Ecstasy. Lovely ballad that Adam could sink his teeth into. I also wouldn’t mind Lil trying one of these.

Oh, I’m thinking we’ll get a whole new pair this week that we haven’t seen yet. I would guess that the fangirls have sufficiently funded the fake charity this week to at least get a new set of frames.

  • glamadamfan

Okay, so I want Adam to sing something by Sam Cooke. I’d like to hear “Bring It On Home To Me” actually. I’d also take “Dancin’ In The Streets” thought if he did the Bowie/Jagger version and added to it. That could be cool. But I’d also love if he did a ballad and showed how really talented he is.

  • glamadamfan

In regards to range, Adam beats everyone out by a long shot, in my opinion. On Ring of Fire, he was hitting unbelievable notes that most female opera singers can’t get to, never mind male singers. I think he hit a C#5 somewhere in there. He’s got a 5 octave range at least! That’s really incredible and pretty darn rare.

Gokey’s range is pretty standard. Just about anyone can sing in that range — if they can sing.

  • onherthize

Adam will sing a Smokey Robinson song. Count on it. He is the only one that could pull it off. Especially with Smokey there to mentor.

  • spacebarshift

    my pick are at idolatoz.blogspot.com

  • bean99

Adam can hit high notes but it doesn’t mean it’s pleasing to the ears.

I’m looking forward to Matt’s song. I think this is a perfect theme for him. I’m really curious what Allison will do this week. I wonder if she’ll take Paula’s hint and change it up?

  • SpenserJ

Cooke never recorded for Motown, so he’s not an option either :(

Very true, but to some ears, it is not only pleasing, it’s damn impressive!
    :-)

We all come with different ears musical preferences, some broad, some niche, some steady, some ever-changing. FWIW, Queen’s Greatest Hits was the very first album I loaded onto my iPod when I bought it several years ago to run with. LOL (Great inspiration, I tell ya – We Are the Champions, Fat Bottom Girls, Bicycle, Don’t Stop Me Now – good for runs!) I think that probably says alot more about where I’m coming from with Adam than anything else. Too bad there’ll be no Queen theme week for me! Not that anyone other than Adam could do it justice, mind you. ;-P

Of course. :smile1_tb: I also liked Queen and Freddy Mercury but think Adam belongs more on a theater stage than concert. YMMV

I doubt she could pull it off, but I would like to see Megan attempt She and Him’s version of You Really Got a Hold on Me.

I doubt she could pull it off, but I would like to see Megan attempt She and Himà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version of You Really Got a Hold on Me.

Yeah, I’m predicting that she does this. I think she’ll do a crappy imitation of it and get praised for her “originality” If she sucks, she can always cough or pout.

This theme is going to be really tough as far as trying to re-arrange the songs to sound more contemporary. As great as the songs are, most of the Motown covers done over the years have stayed pretty close to the originals – I think expecting this group to come up with something innovative and “current’ in one week is probably a tall order.

  • Tess

expecting this group to come up with something innovative and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“currentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ in one week is probably a tall order.

I’ve never understood the “judges…or should I say self-absorbed, OTT, cocky, word spewing, hypocritical, non-realistic, puppets” when they use these terms. And in so many instances if you take an “old” song and make it innovative they tell you that you can’t mess with the original!

These motown hits have stood the test of time, the covers are so close to the originals because there isn’t a lot you can do to change these songs up…they are usually so well-written with fantastic and identifiable melodies that they become excrutiatingly difficult to change. Besides, most Motown hits are identifiable within the first few notes.

I just hope that tonight’s performances embrace the history of Motown and that the kids infuse the songs with passion. I don’t want anyone just to sing the notes, or to use the songs to show-off their vocal gymnastics. I just want to be taken back to a wonderful place that was Motown in the 60′s and 70′s.

  • justshootme

I think Megan could do a good job on Gwyneth Paltrow’s version of “Just My Imagination” (with Babyface).
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaMYSvy3ths

I always get my hopes up on these theme nights, that the contestants will come up with more obscure choices, and then I’m disappointed to hear the same old shit. I’m trying to lower my expectations. Although I’ll never give up hope that Gokey will fall off the stage.

  • just sayin

BTW, it seems to me that there aren’t as many spoilers as there were last season. Is this right or is it just my foggy memory?

  • Layla

Wow! Out of curiosity I listened to Gwyneth Paltrow with Babyface…and really liked it. She’s a far better singer than actress.

…and NO! Megan shouldn’t touch this classic with a 10 foot pole.

  • Heart

A poster from Joe’s Place is going to rehearsal and should provide spoilers this afternoon. He said to check between 3:30 – 4:30pm.

The rehearsal should be longer today because of the Jennifer Hudson taping, right?

I’m dying to know what Adam is singing!

MOTOWN is so important to the cultural and social framework of American music, it will always be relevant. One hundred years from now, the Beatles and the Motown sound will still be discussed in music circles. Every course taught on the Civil Rights movement covers its’ importance.

I did a major thesis on the topic which also included seeing most of the artists perform in person. There is no other word better than AWESOME!

I’m hoping for MOTOWN week 2 next week, I LOVE it!

Tess, your entire post was so right on, I could quote it all. Terrific.

At first I laughed, but then realized that is probably the most accurate description of the judges I have ever read. Certainly worth posting at least once a week. You have a way with words.

I am anxious to find out what Anoop and Adam are singing.
