Jesse Langseth – Kansas City – 25 – Minneapolis, MN – Â   Hollywood “group” - H’wood “chair” (singoff with Frankie Jordan) – Semis Week 2AI Hollywood VideoAI Top 36

While much was made of David Osmond (son of Alan Osmond) and Michael Castro (brother of Jason), another contestant with familiar family ties stayed under the radar, until she was leaked as part of the Top 36.

She’s Jesse Langseth, little sister to Grammy award-winning blues singer/guitarist Jonny Lang.

Jesse fronted a band called the Jesse Lang band back in Minneapolis,   her brother thanks her in the liner notes of his album, “Lie to Me” and she’s also done some acting and modeling.   Plus, it’s been reported that she was arrested and put on probation for a DUI a few years ago.

I was impressed with her blusey style in Hollywood, where we finally got to hear her.   But since, we haven’t heard much about her beyond “winning” a singoff with Frankie Jordan in the Chair episode with a song that wasn’t very impressive.   She has to Wow in the semis to move to the Top 12.

I really loved the brief snippet we got of her last night. And if she’s anything like her brother, I will probably LOVE her. I don’t know how she’ll do when it comes to lame-o theme nights, but we’ll see. If she can make it all her own thing, she might be a big surprise in this competition.

MJ– I think the Osmond dad you mean is not Jay but ALAN OSMOND. (Alan also has MS.)

  • St.Lucia

I loved her. I thought she has such a beautiful tone to her voice. As of right now, she’s the only girl I’m even remotely rooting for in this competition. I think she has a lot of talent(must run in the family!) and I hope they feature her a bit more next week.

  • BootStar

I really liked what I heard, but didn’t remember her from the auditions, so I was kinda confused when she sang this week. Based on her background, I think I’m going to love her. (And I think it’s kinda cute that she was born the day before David Cook.)

I really liked what I heard. But then again, I’m a little biased, because I absolutely LOVE Jonny Lang. I don’t think her connections are the same as the Osmond connections, so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt for now. She looks promising.

  • MaryS-NJ

I think I have a little bit of a girlcrush on her, actually. Great voice from the little we’ve heard, and if she sings blues like her brother, I can’t wait to hear what else she does!

  • justshootme

She’s pretty much the only girl in the competition I’m interested in at this point. I thought her snippet sounded great. And I’m hoping she’ll make good/interesting song choices. I am kinda surprised she’d choose to go the AI route. I’d think her brother could do all the string pulling she’d need to make it in her genre.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

With all of his “string-pulling,” if he in fact has those strings to pull, I doubt her brother could have given her the exposure that this show has the potential to do.

  • J.S.G.

In that video, Jessica is over shadowed by Adam Lambert’s over singing, so it is hard to know how she will perform. Hopefully we will get to hear her sing a solo before she given her walking papers.

  • gingerly

I think she shows great potential with the 10 seconds (I’m stretching it) we got to hear her.

  • Dr. Tracey

She didn’t make an impression on me from the tiny bit I saw of her, i’m interested to hear more though.

  • justshootme

With all of his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“string-pulling,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ if he in fact has those strings to pull, I doubt her brother could have given her the exposure that this show has the potential to do.

That’s why I said “in her genre”. And “exposure” can be good or bad. Bad if it means losing credibility. I guess “string pulling” was a bad way of putting it, maybe “connections” would have been better. And I think Johnny Lang probably has plenty of connections to help a sis out.

  • daenarys

Love her. She’s got that bluesy soul thing going on. Let’s hope her song choices hold up.

  • abbysee

Truthfully I haven’t heard enough, and what I heard didn’t bowl me over. Mildly interested, but just barely. I do think that recent Grammy winning brother trumps famous a generation ago Osmond though. That being said, string pulling isn’t enough anymore. Just ask any Jackson not named Michael or Janet, or and Osmond not named Donny and Marie.

  • snuffles

I liked her. She should bust out her blues guitar in the semi-finals if she wants to stand out from the rest of the girls.

  • janerazor

I was so happy we finally got to hear a bit from Jesse. I’m hoping she goes far…if only for the fact that I’ve actually seen her sing before (in a dive bar in Apple Valley, MN, a while back). All the contemplation about string-pulling feels funny to me…even with the family connection, she was just a bar singer who gigged around town. Heck, she was even far from being one of the bigger bar singers in the Twin Cities.

I really did like her tone, though. Good luck, Jesse!

    There ya go!!!

  • primeminister

I’m looking forward to hearing more from her.

(But I’m a huge fan of Jonny Lang, so I’m a little biased.)

  • t2

To me Jesse and the Osmond guy are way more planty plants than someone like Joanna Paciti or Carly from last year. These last two tried and didn’t make it, so I don’t have any compunction about giving them a second chance.

Having said all that–if you can sing and you aren’t under contract, then, it’s all’s fair in love and AI

  • Jx223

I definitely liked the snippet that we saw of Jesse singing. I think that her voice sounded pretty good. I think that she could end up being great and I am definitely interested in seeing more of her. I think that if she has only a third amount of the talent that her brother has, she could be very talented and entertaining.

I read that she plays mulitple instruments, so I would like to see her play at least one on the show. I think that it could be awesome if she played the blues guitar on the show. If she did this, not only do I think that she would probably sound great, but it would also make her stand out from the rest of the pack. Right now Jesse is the only girl that I really like in this competition.

I do think that recent Grammy winning brother trumps famous a generation ago Osmond though.

Donny and Marie Osmond are all over TV…today. Actually, they never really left show business. They have multi-generational fame–they are household names.

Jonny Lang won a Grammy in the the Gospel category. I’ll bet if you stopped random people in the street and asked them if they knew who Jonny Lang was, most wouldn’t know.

I’m not sure how deep Jonny’s connections in show business go, but I would imagine the Osmonds go deep. They aren’t only singing stars, but television stars as well. Donny and Marie had their own talk show. Donny was or is the host of 10,000 pyramid. Donny also has an extensive theater background.

So, I think the Osmonds trump the Langs by miles.

To me Jesse and the Osmond guy are way more planty plants than someone like Joanna Paciti

Not to me. Especially compared to Joanna Paciti who has had national exposure, but hasn’t “made it” prior to AI.

I am truly looking forward to seeing more of Jesse! Plant or not, from the short snippet, I like her style and confidence!

I guess lil ol’ me, who apparently lives under a rock, needs to check out Jonny Lang.

  • primeminister

I guess lil olà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ me, who apparently lives under a rock, needs to check out Jonny Lang.

If you need some place to start, Red Light and Breakin’ Me are my favorites, but Lie to Me is probably one of his most well-known.

And if you don’t mind Christian music, Only a Man is a must-hear. It’s so personal, so heartfelt.

  • cookcricket

^^^Thanks primeminister! I just went to the tube and checked out a couple vids. I saw his younger(?) performance of “Lie to Me”. I like him a lot!

No, I don’t mind Christian music AT ALL, as long as it’s good and he’s good! Thanks again!

  • cookcricket

Wow, “Only a Man”, no words! Thank you!

  • Hoppy

Cookcricket, Jonny was only 16 when he originally recorded “Lie to Me”. He’s just that awesome. :D (I am biased, yes.)

I’ve seen him a few times live and he’s FANTASTIC. (Best double bill ever? Jonny with Jason Mraz. Long night, but SO worth it.)

  • seattle_girl

So funny, I was listening to a few of his YouTube songs thinking he’s like a grittier bluesier (?) Jason Mraz. What a double bill that would have been! I’ve loved Jonny Lang but have to admit I’ve kind of quit tracking him. Time to load up the iPod with some new tunes…

  • americanidolfan102

She’s amazing and from what we’ve seen of her
she would be in my top 12, of the top 36 we have anyway
    joining her are
    1.Danny
    2.Kris
    3.Adam
    4.Anoop
    5.Ann Marie
    6.Brent Kieth
    7.Casey Carlson
    8.Matt Giraud
    9.Kristen McNamara
    10 Stevie Wright
    11.Meagan

easily replacing Kristen though is Stephen Fowler

even though I doubt half of these people would make top 12 because of people like Von, Joanna, Nathaniel, Nick/Norman, etc
mostly (except Joanna) because of the Worsters

  • bean99

I liked the snippet we heard of Jesse but can’t say I’ve ever heard of her brother. She’s one of the few girls I’ll be interested in seeing in the top 36.

  • dancingqueen

I own every Jonny Lang CD – love him! Didn’t really get to hear enough of Jesse, but, if the talent runs in the family, I’ll be rooting for her. Plus, they’re from my hometown, though I moved long before they grew up & started singing.

  • spanishfan

I really was struck by Jesse ´s voice. I liked Kristen too. But it really is a man ´s competition. Very unusual and striking voices. Danny and Adam and Matt leading the pack.

  • stover33

Reminds me of Claire Fisher from Six Feet Under. Very cute, seems cool.

  • NYCSlain

OK, here’s a really stupid question – is their real last name Lang or Langseth? ( I suppose it would make more sense that Jonny shortened it to Lang.)
