One of Fantasia Barrino’s homes is going up for auction Monday, and according to the NY Post, she’s been ignoring attempts by the Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, sheriff’s deputy’s to contact her.

Mecklenburg County sheriff’s deputies, who are responsible for enforcing civil court orders, have tried at least a dozen times to reach Barrino at the home and by phone, said Sgt. J.W. England, a supervisor of civil judgments.

A deputy spoke a couple of times to Barrino’s mother, but never reached the star, who appears to be ignoring attempts to save her house, officials said.

“We try very hard and give the defendant every opportunity to pay,” England said yesterday.

Fantasia owes $65,000 of a $75,000 loan she got from Broward Energy Management, a Florida credit company. She borrowed the money in 2006 to pay back taxes she owed the IRS. Due to the outstanding debt, the company won the right to auction off her 1.3m home in Charlotte.

Over the course of about a year, Fantasia has been unresponsive–ignoring court documents and not sending a lawyer to appear in court to represent her. Says the attorney for Broward Energy Management, “I certainly don’t want anyone to lose their house, but as far as I’m concerned, we have a judgment.”

According to the Post, Fantasia has had prior financial problems:

In 2005, Barrino nearly lost another home she owns in Charlotte as well as her red $240,000 Mercedes Benz.

She apparently ignored a lien on that home, valued at $740,000, brought by the neighborhood association after she failed to pay fees and other costs. The case was eventually dismissed, according to court documents.

Last year, Barrino failed to pay a promissory note on $187,809 she borrowed to buy her Mercedes. The dealership that sold her the car sued, but the matter was resolved.

Sounds like Fanty is out of control…

Typical. Let me guess. She went to her pastor to guide her in managing all the money she was (supposedly) raking in. A record contract is a loan and one must pay back the record company, even though they give it to you upfront. So she went to the pastor or family friend and fill in the blanks … here’s a young woman who at 19 or 20 y.o., little education, came into a lot of “fame” not necessarily money….and then she went conspicuously consumption crazy….which is what happens when you give a kid money to buy candy. They overdo it. She stated at one time she was the only one earning money in the household….not her mom, not her brother — she was the one. This is a big lesson that all the AIs should learn from…and others going into show business.

Be frugal. Live modest. Pay your taxes and your bills. But overall — work! work! work! Daughtry and Carrie didn’t get to where they were by sitting at home and waiting for the jobs. They networked, they wrote songs, they toured….that’s how you get the money.

I haven’t seen Fantasia do anything notable besides the Color Purple Broadway show….and believe me …. you read it here first — I betcha she’s going back to the CP, possibly on the road show.

As for the mortgage company that lent her the money….they are equally to blame….because she had no appreciable work background, no tax background, and they gave her a liar’s loan (that’s what I’m guessing) hoping to rake it in when she became a big star.

Honestly, those amounts cited in that newspaper story are too big for me….and I’m a baby boomer.

    Hi MJ,

I enjoy reading your blogs, but you need to stop posting these negative things about people this is false, and i know for a fact that it’s not true, it’s not fair to read something and without checking if it’s a fact you hurry and post it on your blog, don’t you think you should make sure it’s true, beforeyou post it?? well i know for a fact that all of this is a made up story and until you here it from the horses mouth, you shouldn’t believe it what happen to innocent until proven guilty huh? FANTASIA is doing fine and will be back before you know it, all those who are talking and wishing bad for her will eat there words.

  • weareallinnocent

I’ve got to say, I’m all about being circumspect and cautious when referencing news stories. And, I’m no fan of the NY Post either. BUT, when the original story cites court docs and law enforcement officials as sources…. Many stories are rumor and innuendo based, I’ll grant you that. But something like a foreclosure, or collecting on a judgment debt, is very easily confirmed by docs in the public record.

I feel for Fantasia, this sounds bad and she appears to have been young and irresponsible — even assuming she may have been taken advantage of by others, and she probably was. That said, you kind of have to step up and face your obligations, particularly when it comes to taxes and legal action!

  • ohreli

How does Shelly22 “know for a fact that it’s not true”…??

Good Lord — A $240,000 Mercedes is way over the top for somebody that doesn’t have that much money.

I think that she is a “pistol” and I hope she does well and gets thru this but do I feel sorry for her? NOT ONE TEENSY LITTLE BIT. Oh darn, she is losing ONE of her houses, so many would be happy with just one – the girl seems to have gone crazy with her money and I hope that she has learned a very expensive lesson with all of this. Also, I have NEVER known Mj to put things up for spite or to be mean, she states “just the facts, just the facts mam” as she finds the info

and i know for a fact that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not true,

If your facts are more than fanwanking wishful thinking, I’d love to know the deets. I’ll post them right away if you email the info to me at mjsbigblog at gmail.com…

    Sally,

This stuff is a matter of public record. No way is this made up. You might want to learn something about public records before potentially slandering people. Words can come back and bite you.

Well, I don’t know anything about her debts, but that chick was everywhere on the adult r&b circuit promoting both albums when they were out. It’s all about where you look. If you don’t listen to that kind of music maybe you didn’t see her, but she definitely wasn’t sitting around eating bon-bons until the Color Purple. For real, for a while I couldn’t get away from Fanny. Not to mention the 8 million tribute shows she did. Seriously, just you tube that girl and up will pop performance videos from everywhere. LOL. But you know, to each his own.

  • SallyinIllinois

Jimmyboyd2: That wasn’t me….I believe the story…it’s Shelly who thinks it’s all made up. The NYP cited names and records….and it is PUBLIC Record. You can go online or to NC court records and get the facts. These foreclosures of the stars are not made up. The newspaper have their facts because they go to the court records.

I’m just saying I’ve seen this happen over and over….even Will Smith had a big tax bill back in the day and had to work hard to pay it off….it happens to a lot of entertainers who don’t get the right management, who don’t get a certified accountant and who don’t live modestly in their first years of “stardom.”

  • nomi

This is not strictly a “newbie” phenomenon; this sort of thing also happens to established entertainers who trust the wrong people who rob them blind.

Excess spending IMO is no different than any other excess — drugs, sex, alcoholism. Plenty of examples in the news of new as well as established, successful entertainers who are either mismanaged by others or fall victim to their own excess.

Whatever the case, I hope Fantasia can rise above it.

In the case of Will Smith, I was amused by a 60 minutes interview that he did where he spoke to the giddy, new-fame spending he did at the start of his career. He took his lumps (the IRS took a HUGE portion of his “Fresh PRince” earnings as payback,) and said he had no regrets over the fun he had as an 18-yo millionaire.

Fantasia may have been working more than we think.

Many Idols have private events and corporate functions lined up. Almost all of them can sing live very well, and chat easily with folks after the performance.

Her management has never been good about listing her upcoming concerts, either. I know sometimes she appears with the comedian Rickey Smiley. Last month, I saw one or more dates on Ticketmaster under Smiley, but it was indeed Fantasia who was headlining. What an odd deal.

I know. I can never find info on Fanty. Sometimes a listing will show up in a local paper, but that’s about it.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

If nothing else, I hope she learns from this that this type of thing doesn’t just disappear if you ignore it. It certainly sounds as if she’s in desperate need of a good business manager!

  • abbysee

I feel for Fantasia, she’s very talented. I hope she gets some sound advice and follows it. The rest will take care of itself.

Tinawina, you are indeed correct, Fantasia worked the R&B circuit very deligently, she is not this lazy, bon bon eating slacker that people are alluding too. R&B artists never get the ink that pop artists do, yet they work hard too in most cases. Most of the time when R&B artists who aren’t topping the chart get ink, it’s because of stuff like this. Anyway, like I said, I hope she comes out better for this, she is far too talented to be noted for her financial woes.

  • snuffles

I don’t think anyone is saying Fantasia is lazy. They’re saying that she hasn’t been handling her financial business and acting irresponsibly in doing so.

  • hoodathunk

The trouble that most of the Idols get into is that they think the $1 million advance they get from the record company is theirs to keep, when actually they might only see 1.00 per record, and out of that the record company takes promotion costs including expensive music videos, tour costs. Unless they sell big like Kelly, Carrie, or Daughtry, chances are they won’t make much on a record deal itself. The real money is in touring and endorsements, and I don’t think ‘Tasia has much going on in either arena, at least not to support a lifestyle on that level. I’m pulling for her to get herself together because she is a big talent.

  • gingerly

I don’t think most Idols have the problem with thinking the $1 million advance they get makes them rich. I think a couple have had that problem. I also think it’s a who you are and where you came from thing. I happen to think that after what has already happened to her she would have learned. Maybe she was too deep in already…maybe she’ll never learn. I can’t know the answers to those things.

  • Niall

I can’t muster any sympathy for Fantasia. This is a 24 year old adult who is acting like an irresponsible child. She had the world placed at her feet in 2004 and could have used that opportunity to finish her education (even if only a GED), increase her literacy, and educate herself about the business. Instead she CHOSE to stay ignorant and irresponsible, buying two expensive houses and expensive cars. She’s chosen to be a party girl who portrays herself as a hood rat, for lack of a better term, takes risque pics of herself that end up all over the internet, goes around looking like a hot mess, and dates pot head rappers. There are so many cautionary tales out there that surely she’s aware of, and she’s even had the benefit of Oprah freakin’ Winfrey as a mentor.

Nope no sympathy. This girl brought it all on herself. Next stop bankruptcy.

  • jimmyboyd2

I don’t know if she’s blaming anyone for this, but she has played the blame game before. She said her schools were so bad that they didn’t teach her to read. LOL. I agree schools in the US are terribad, but if you really didn’t learn how to read, you have a serious learning disability that needed to be addressed. It wasn’t the quality of education, as even a non-teacher can obviously teach someone to read.

Of course, passing people through grades when they don’t even know how to read would be the problem, if anything.
