Elliott Yamin sings “Rock Around The Clock at the Competencia Internacional in Viña del Mar, Chile.

Competencia Internacional is the largest music festival in Chile and is broadcast live across the country. Notice the lyrics beamed on large screen behind him. Pretty random song choice, there Elliott.

    awww elliott!

I liked him on the show, but have only seen this plus one other vid sometime ago. If he commanded the stage and had this look way back when.. I swear he would have been a top 2.

Can anyone tell me what he’s been up to in the past few years?

  • lucy

Yeah, *very* random choice. That’s what I thought when I first heard about it, too, mj.

I hope that he did research and found out that Rock Around the Clock is a top 10 all-time favorite song in Chile or something, to account for the choice!

Doesn’t show off his voice to the extent that he probably should have, in my opinion. Nice and energetic, though, as always!

On Elliott’s career — He’s got three fine albums out. The first kind of a mishmash of things, with some standout songs, including Wait for You, a still-oft-played hit that was a top-five song of its year on top 40 radio, among other honors. The album went gold-plus.

The second is a great Christmas album (not religious, of course, but with one of my favorite renditions ever of Merry Christmas, Baby, for example) — which I think a lot of people love because it really showcases the R&B, old-schooly, raspy Elliott. It came out first as a Target exclusive and sold very very well in that capacity, and then he released it again the next year on his own. If you like old-school Elliott, it’s a great album to have. I play it all year long.

Then he’s got a third album, a pop one that I think is really a beautiful, coherent piece of kind of neo-soulish pop with some R&B flair. That one has sold pretty badly, even though I think it’s a much much better album than the first. His mother’s death in the middle of the album process probably didn’t help the album much. I think he pretty much crumbled and lost track of what was going on for a while, understandably, to me, during his grieving period. He and his mom were extremely close, and he knew how much she’d gone through with him during his kind of misspent youth! Mostly, though, I think the problems have been — the Idol second-album curse; his being on an indie label; and his not having much “edge” but singing mostly songs that I think are just too sweet and positive for the top-40 radio vibe … (this last idea may be just me, though — I like him a little edgier, which he mainly gets when he’s doing older-school stuff — like Train Wreck and Cold, Cold Heart — while his more contempo pop stuff tends to be much sweeter and, I personally suspect, therefore somewhat less radio friendly and saleable! — Who knows, of course!)

He’s made significant inroads in Japan as being a pop favorite over the past couple of years, as well. Has had a few songs that hvae done quite well on the radio there, has toured a bit, and has some very solid album sales.

And he’s blossomed into a fabulous live performer. On his tour with his first album, he was also backed by a great great band that really pulled behind him. He’s also done some USO tours, has gotten quite involved with malaria and orphan relief in Angola, and has worked very hard on juvenile-diabetes charities. He’ll be back at least briefly on Idol this year since he recently went back to Angola with Kara to follow up on the IGB stuff over there.

Anyway, he’s trying to get his career back on track this year. Sure hope he can gain some of his lost momentum again.

Nice. An Elliott thread. I hadn’t seen one of these in a while. Thanks, mj. :)

Elliott really can’t dance. Heh. Love him still, though. :P

  • MOMster

Thanks for posting this, MJ. The song was chosen for him – the contest is theme-based (historical songs for the contestant’s country, I believe.) Man, he must have been tired – he went straight there from Africa where he was working for Idol Gives Back. That guy has energy that doesn’t quit though – he’s amazing.

  • Karen

I think the song was Clive’s pick LOL. He sounds really good though. I guess this song was chosen by the festival committee to represent the US in the competition. I think they choose a winner tonight. Thank you for the Elliott thread, mj.

  • koshka

Lucy Thank you so much for taking the time to post all this. I’m going to have to go back and pull up his music (hopefully on iTunes). I hope he gets his momentum back too, but if not I hope he is pleased with his success so far. :) Hopefully IGB gives him some exposure.

  • weese

I believe there has been talk of an acoustic cd from Elliott in the near future so be sure to look for that as well.

  • jpfan

He’ sporting the mountain man look.;) Past week has been pretty solid for Elliott. The Olympics used his song Free and he’s filmed footage with Kara for IGB. Elliott just needs to keep his music other there. But I’m not sure he’s the kind of guy who works his career 24/7 which you really have to do in the music scene.

    Great!

He’s said recently that it’s definitely harder to keep a career going than it is to start one! But I think he’s absolutely very happy with his life and what he gets to do for a living. I think it’s beyond his wildest dreams, actually, even in the kind of doldrummy area he’s been in lately. And he’s surely *very* grateful for the opportunities he’s had to do charity work in several areas and advocacy work on diabetes and so on. Elliott remains the same sweetheart with stunning vocal ability that he was on the show, I think. He knows that he can find *some* kind of work in music going forward, no matter what happens, and it’s clear that he’s very grateful for that — although I think it’s the audience who should be grateful, because, What a voice.

  • Javi4Real

He perfomrs again tonight, I would say around midnight here in Chile. I was so excited when I found out it was him, I cound’t believe it!!!

Lucy, nice recap of Elliott’s career. I think his most recent album sold 45K or so. Absolutely no TV promo at all. Just for a reaility check Kat McPhee’s recent album where she got promo on lots of TV shows has sold 25K to date. It’s a tough world out there for an indie with no promo.

I also think Elliott made a ton of $ from his first album which in a way is a bad thing. He’s not exactly a Type A personality. :)

  • Javi4Real

Also, it’s broadcast around THE WORLD!!!!! You can watch it here http://festival2010.canal13.cl/2010/html/ where it says “Señal en Vivo”. Tonight the show is gonna be awesome if you like dancing.

Yeah, I think that’s right. I agree that even his second album has sold remarkably well, considering that the indie status kept them from getting *any* national promo for it or any radio play (even though it’s *dripping* with excellent, radio-friendly material). (and because of his major non-Type-A-ness!) Tribute to his talent.

I actually think he looks and sounds great…. and while the song choice might be sort of random, I think he does a great job with it.
Hearing Elliott makes me long for the good old Idol days… you know, the ones with great singers and song choices… Thanks so much for posting!

  • tierbee

He’s so adorable, lol. I’ve always liked Elliott – I have his latest album and really love it. Wish some of the songs could get some radio play, they really are quite radio-friendly.

  • Suzanne

After that Top 12 guys last night, Elliott sounds like the best singer on Earth!

I wonder if the song fit in with some theme on the show. I understand that it’s been popular in Chile, but it’s 60 years old or something. Maybe tonight he’ll sing something else and we’ll get to see that.

I voted my fingers down to bloody stumps for Elliott but I haven’t liked the albums; I’m not an R&B fan. The only song I have on my ipod by him is Moody’s Mood for Love from the compilation album. Personally, I’d be overjoyed to see Elliott move into jazz.

  • lucy

Yep, and I can’t help but remember how, on the very first night of the semifinals, while he looked like he was about to drown in his own flop sweat and his body language (and his Amish beard — *not* a good stylistic choice!) clearly revealed his relative dearth of performance experience, his vocals were still fantastic. It *can* be done, even with nerves and inexperience.

  • Madman

The audience at Vina Del Mar is usually extremely rude. If they don’t like anything about your performance, they will boo you off stage lol. If you have a bad rep in their country, they’ll do the same. I’m not watching the video, but if Elliot didn’t get boo’d off the stage… well that’s a good sign :P.

    My thoughts exactly.

Cool…because he didn’t! Not at all.

i heart elliott yamin… he was my guy in s5, all the way, and remains one of my favorites singers… his ”moody’s mood for love” in top 24 week told me all i needed to know about his vocal skills, and he hasn’t disappointed me since… mainstream ”success” has been a tad elusive, but it’s of no importance to me when i can still enjoy hearing him sing… i hope he continues doing just that for a long, long time… he’s got a one-in-a-million voice, and he’s one heck of a nice guy too…

eta — not trying to start nothing, but i still love watching s5 top 4 night, and the performance from elliott that helped knock daughtry of the running for the title… elliott was on fiyahhh, lol

He did the Stevie song If You Really Loved Me, top 24 and Moody’s for Top 20. Elliott’s a great singer but I think even Kevin Covais would look genius compared to 90% of last night’s hot mess. Haven’t seen anything that bad since S6. :)

I do this, too, and I was actually a big fan of Chris’s on the show … I love rewatching Season 5 just in general because both Elliott and Chris were great just about every night — and you also had a good shot of getting strong performances from other people too, each night. Paris, Mandisa, Kat, Taylor, Ace, Lisa, and even Bucky and Pickle all had some fine moments.

Somehow I’m not expecting to feel that way about Season 9!

thanks 4 the memory refresh jpfan :P

I think it’s cute. Can’t help but think about Potsie and Fonzie combing their hair in the mirror when I hear it.

It’s hard to imagine how terrified Ellott looked when he first took the idol stage when you see him now. I’ll always love him. He’s real, down to earth and treats his fans like long lost buddies. I hope somehow, someway, someday his fabulous music gets the recognition it deserves.

  • MY IDOL ELLIOTT

I think season 5 also had one of the best TV rating ever with over 60 million viewers!!!! These passed 2 weeks are some of the best 2 weeks ever in Elliotts life!!!! Elliott & Kara going to Angola Africa & raising $100,000 with Exxon Mobile & handing out nets was incredible. Then Elliott gos to Chile for the very first time. He’s performing in the International Singing Compitition at the 2010 Del Mar Music Festival!!!! This little guy on this huge stage with a very huge R & B smooth raw powerful voice!!!! On Tuesday 2/23/10 Elliott’s first performance of “Rock Arond The Clock” was PHENOMENAL & INCREDIBLE!!!! Elliott up there on that huge stage lookin brilliant with that watching gray vest, gray pants & gray Converse shoes!!!! He also looked soooo great wearing his Fedora hat!!!! His dancing was soooo brilliant too!!!! Elliott’s voice was incredible & Emazin!!!! Overall it was the best performace of a life time & the best performance of the night!!!! I know Elliott will go all the way to the finals & WIN & bring home the “Chilean Bacon” to the U.S.!!!! All Elliott’s performances in this siging compitition will be the best ever!!!! Elliott’s also soooo excited because this is his first time ever in Chile!!!! Elliott alway’s sing like YAMIN it!!!! Thank you very much for everyone that’s supporting and seeing Elliott perform at this great festival!!!! I think this is one of the hugest crowds Elliott has ever perfomed for!!!! Elliott never ever missed a word of “Rock Around The Clock”!!!! I know Elliott can sing anything & everything now matter what the song is!!!!

  • MY IDOL ELLIOTT

HI Yall, I forgot to say after Elliott was on 2006 American Idol Elliott’s learned to become very relaxed & more confidence up on the stage in front of big crowds & after he got his teeth fixed Elliott smiles alot more now & has alot more confidence in himself!!!! After American Idol till now I can see a big differance in Elliott!!!! Elliott’s like a whole new person now!!!!

  • dreamz

LOVE Elliot, and love his voice.

  • lucy

By the way, Elliott has advanced through two rounds of this competition, getting good audience responses and votes, so he now gets to sing Rock Around the Clock a *third* time.

Maybe they should do Idol this way — “Here is your song; now sing it over and over again until we decide we don’t like it any more!” lol. Kinda strange. But, nevertheless, Elliott is pleasing the Chileans so far.

Yep. You could see that he didn’t catch “Estados Unidos” and the others all knew before he did that he’d made it. Funny. Keep rocking, Elliott!

The last I heard Elliott is trying to get to an airport for a flight out. He is talking about the after shocks.

I would imagine Elliott will be part of the Idol Gives Back show in April. I am sure funds will be raised with the possibility that he will be going back to Chile. How many people who are involved in fundraisers have actually been in the horror of the event?

Prayers for all affected by the earthquake.
