As much as I thought the bottom of the field was exceptionally weak this year, I can’t believe nobody outside the top four are charting anything in the entire top 300. Last season lower-placed finalists like Michael Johns and Brooke had performance tracks that sold well enough to make the Billboard charts.

Wow!! What’s Going On is soooo good. I bought it just to be supportive, but it might be my favorite Kris song. Makes me wanna go out and do good in the universe.

MJ it’s kinda funny that Adam’s blurb on Itunes is that his “distinct style and personality helped win take the runner’s up spot”. Wishful thinking by TPTB I guess.

I love both contestants (glad Kris won) but I seriously don’t think I can do No Boundaries by either of them. What a God-awful song that is. If the contestants are as close a group as they profess themselves to be then while they are on tour the whole group comes out and sings No Boundaries with Kris so he doesn’t have to suffer alone. That’s what friends do.

That’s exactly what David said, and what was said in all the press releases. Both audio AND video of the performance were supposed to be available for download right after the show. The Permanent that is selling now is the album version and presumably those sales are NOT benefitting the charity. I’m really pissed off. David sings his heart out for a good cause and these people can’t come through for him? I believe the press release said that these special downloads will be available for a month so there’s still time to rectify the situation, but many people will either erroneously assume they supported the charity with the album version purchase or forget to come back and check for it later. Epic epic FAIL to whoever couldn’t get this up in a timely fashion. They could at least have a link to pre-order! I presume it’s just incompetance and not a mandated delay to give precedence to the winner’s single and album, but still, epic FAIL. :nono_tb:

Ugh, why haven’t the put DC’s performances up there? He’s trying to do something good… and they are missing out on all the short-memoried people who are going to forget to download it. Or, as said above, folks are downloading the album version thinking *that* is going to charity

Will we get the digital sales numbers on these songs next week? Will we get current week numbers and sales to date? How does that work?

Either iTunes or AI’s copy editor didn’t get the memo that the script changed last night.

I was very surprised when Kris’ Celebratory song actually sounded good last night and also on the studio track.

Digital sales numbers will be released next Wednesday. Last year they reported one-week sales only did not reveal totals from throughout the season (actually since the pre-finale S7 tracks were removed from iTunes immediately after the final two performance night, they really only provided 3-days worth of sales data). Since the tracks will be available throughout the summer this year (smart money-making move on TPTB’s part), I’m not sure what they will do about reporting total sales numbers from the season. Maybe they won’t be so secretive with that data this year.

As much as I hate myself for saying it but I’m enjoying the studio version of No Boundaries. I guess my Kris Allen Love has ‘no boundaries’.

I’m a big fan of David Cook, and this year I’m on the Kris bandwagon (DC is still tops though). I could tolerate TOML as it’s not that cringe-worthy (compared to Do I Make You Proud), but I gotta say I’m totally hooked on “No Boundaries”! Have been playing it non-stop since then.

I guess I was the minority few who thought the song was alright on performance night and Kris, in his own way, sang it better than Adam’s messy take. And the studio version of Kris totally pawns Adam’s. (Try listen to Adam’s, and tell me you don’t cringe at its arrangement and the horrible background singers).

Mmm I’ve listened both version, as much as I despise the song lol, and I think I gotta to confess that I disagree with you. I much prefer Adam version than Kris. I love the way he sings it.

I think it’s finally hitting me that this season is actually over. While I am an Adam fan, I will say No Boundaries sounds more sincere coming from Kris.

How does a single song count as an album? I don’t get it.

I think the performance is supposed to be put up but iTunes is retard for not getting it up in a timely fashion. Alot ppl are buying the album track which is great but they better get it up soon so as to raise funds for cancer research!

I was in Davidcookofficial.com now and a girl put up a conversation between her and one of the chat people on itunes. Apparently the reason they haven’t put up the live performance of permanent is because Idol studio has not released it yet. He said they are normally pretty quick about it but to keep checking as it should go up soon.

Just an FYI for all those hardcore DC fans as myself that keep biting our nails waiting endlessly……..

Most of the finale performance videos were not made available at iTunes last season. Cook and Archie’s ‘Hero’ duet was, but none of he contestant’s individual duets with the stars were. Hopefully they realized what kind of $$ they left on the table last year and will make them all available this season.

I’m pretty sure that’s what Ryan said on Tuesday – at least I know he said the winner’s iTunes pass bundle (including pre-order of the debut album) would be available through the summer. I haven’t heard them announce any other cutoff for the S8 performance tracks. Last year they pulled them all on Midnight after the finale (Top 2 performances got the rest of the sales week, and of course the Magic Rainbow just kept on selling), but Ryan announced that this would happen and urged people to buy before the deadline. I always thought they really missed the boat on a lot of potential sales had they left the tracks up through the summer tour. So maybe they’re trying that strategy this year.

I don’t think those billboard numbers were for the run of the show, they were only for the 3-4 days the songs were available that chart week. I also don’t think we ever got the total numbers for the weeks prior to the finale…and probably never will.

Just listening to the studio version of “A Change is Gonna Come” and it’s f***ing amazing! For a changes they didn’t take everything out of Adam’s vocals in the production. And, I want a complete Adam catalog, so I will probably buy his “No Boundaries”.

I love the Queen performance (except where Kris blows the second section). I wouldn’t have like to hear Adam with Keith Urban and I really don’t think Kris’ voice works well with Queen. But it seemed like he forgot the lyrics or something.

Actually, it was just for that week (and only 3-4 days) when he sold almost a million downloads. I can’t imagine what the sales for his entire Idol run.

The Cook/Beatles thing was not about outselling, it was about having the most songs charting on the Billboard 100 at the same time.

And yeah, the only figures we had were from that 3 day period when the tracks were available before they were removed from iTunes. This year the tracks will be there the full week, so not a comparable situation.

This is incorrect. Cook did not outsell the Beatles, but he did place 11 songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100, which is the most in the Soundscan era and the most since the Beatles had 14 on the chart in 1964. He also debuted 14 tracks on the Digital Downloads chart, which also is a record (previously held by Miley Cyrus with 8 and Bon Jovi with 6 before her).

These sales and chart rankings were ONLY for the truncated sales week that the S7 tracks were available after the finale. Cumulative sales data from throughout the season have never been released by Idol or iTunes.

Here’s a chart showing how all 17 of Cook’s tracks sold and charted after the finale.

I think since there was no “deadline” imposed on the purchase of the S8 tracks, the lack of urgency will cause them to move more slowly up the iTunes rankings than Cook, Archie, Castro, Brooke, and MJ did last year.

We will find out the Billboard numbers for this week on Wednesday. They only count for the current week, none are ever cumulative. Remember the Hot 100 combines sales and airplay so not all songs in the itunes top 100 will hit the Hot 100 because they are competing with other songs that get decent radio play as well.

Remember the Hot 100 combines sales and airplay so not all songs in the itunes top 100 will hit the Hot 100 because they are competing with other songs that get decent radio play as well.

Okay, so it’s not where they rank on iTunes, but how much they sold really and how that shakes down when combined with airplay that will determine where they all fall on Billboard. Ahhhh, Bach.

A cynical person might think that the charity version of Permanent is being held back because the suits know that the force of that performance is going to sell a lot of studio MP3s (and albums) while people have nothing else to buy (so long as the live version isn’t up). Even more perniciously, it might be suggested that the execs are hoping that people are buying the studio MP3s, because they think they are donating to cancer research in the process.

I hope this doesn’t end up back-biting DC because all he did was go out and complete his part of the task amazingly well. But, even if this is just ineptitude on the part of AI/ Itunes and not something more insidious, it amounts to an epic fail because potentially tens of thousands of dollars worth of charitable funds are being lost the longer they dally.

Ok, thanks for the Billboard info on who charted where and how last year re: DC. Just confirms that my memory sucks. I hate getting old.

Okay, so ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not where they rank on iTunes, but how much they sold really and how that shakes down when combined with airplay that will determine where they all fall on Billboard. Ahhhh, Bach.

Well, there are lots of different Billboard charts. The Billboard Hot Digital Tracks chart will match closest against iTunes, since that chart factors sales only, and does not combine multiple versions of a song into one for charting purposes. The Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart does combine versions, so more unique songs will appear on this chart once it is published. The Hot 100 and Pop 100 charts are hybrid charts that combine sales, airplay, and online streaming. As noted above, the Hot 100 does not exactly mirror the iTunes bestseller list because there will be lower-selling tracks that make-up ground on the chart based on accumulated airplay and streaming. None of the Idol tracks will have any significant airplay to speak of by the time the first week charts are published, so not as many of these songs will appear on that chart when it is all said and done.

Also, remember that the iTunes top seller lists are simply a snapshot of how tracks are selling relative to each other at any given time. If a track rises high but doesn’t sustain that volume, it will drop quickly and may not chart as high compared to other songs when the full-week’s sales are taken into consideration.

Basically what I’m saying is the fact that Mad World is #4 on iTunes right now or whatever does not necessarily mean that it will be #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. You have to gague the trends and staying-power of a track over time to get a good prediction on where it might chart. We’ll know more about how the Idols are doing as we see how they last through the weekend.

I actually think A Change is Gonna Come is now one of my favorite songs of his. It’s really beautiful. I downloaded that crappy “No Boundaries” song just in support of him, but I didn’t even put it on my iPod this morning as I knew I wouldn’t even list to it. Love Adam, but that song is just too cheesy for me. Sorry Kara.

I remember waking up at 8:30 the morning after the finale and TOML was already at #1 and it remained there.

I don’t see any of the finale performances on iTunes yet so I don’t think its some major conspiracy. Sometimes iTunes screws up with these things and not the label.

I’m so happy that right now Kris has three of the top ten songs on Itunes, I understand that David Cook may have sold better with Time of My Life last year, but I think we all can agree that was a better song than No Boundaries. I don’t really think it is fair to compare sales of idols from year to year either. Jordin may have taken forever to get to a million records sold (if she ever did, I’m not sure) but she had several hit singles, and Cook doesn’t have the numbers of a Carrie or Kelly, but that does not take away from what he has done. I hope this demonstrates to people that Kris does in fact have a lot of fans of his own, and did not win solely on an anitadam vote but has a large contingent of fans clamoring for his music

Actually I’d say there’s a decent chance Kris or Adam could threaten Cook’s records simply because they have the benefit of a full sales-week for their pre-finale tracks, whereas Cook and Archie and the rest of S7 were removed from iTunes at midnight Wednesday. So yes, while Cook performed 20 unique songs and released 17 of them (compared to K/A’s 15 performed and 15 released), they will have more sales days to try to get all 15 of those tracks onto the main charts compared to Cook’s 14. So yes Kraddam fans, it could certainly happen.

iTubes should donate money to ABC2 for fucking this up. Isn’t this like loss of income or something?

I think so, don’t see why not. During the season Itunes has made available live performances, but it always takes them a day (or close to it). It’s probably what’s happening with Permanent.

Btw, I think No Boundaries is a better song than TOML (or other before it). Adam and Kris destroyed it with their live performances, but the song isn’t that awful. I think Kris’s studio version is better, but I don’t appreciate his breathing and phrasing there. (Not that matters when it comes to airplay)

Kris Allen – No Boundaries is the currently the best among contestants of Season 8. Adam Lambert just 1 spot behind. What a close fight!

Impressive list Kirsten. The other one to add is Kiss a Girl by Keith Urban. Last I checked, it was #14 on itunes!!! I’m not surprised. It was my 2nd favorite performance of the night (after Permanent) and I liked it more than the original. Hope they make it available on itunes.

I don’t see the iTunes sales as a fight. The fight was pretty much done when they reached the top two. Now it’s only a fantard fight (which can get pretty ugly nonetheless). It now becomes “my guy shoulda won because of x or y.” It’s all very subjective in the end (as it always has been).

I do, however, totally flove seeing DC chart up there with the finalists. Has that happened in previous years? I remember people saying that DC would get no bump because it’s about this season and not past seasons. Is this an anomoly? I truly have no clue because Mr. Cook was the only Idol who made me pay attention to numbers (lovely things that they are).

I don’t know if it happened in previous years but I love it too. I do know I heard people saying a guest Idol performance on the finale wasn’t as big a deal as during the season because you get lost in the commotion. Happy to see that’s not the case for DC – his album is already higher on iTunes than it got after his CBTM performance.

Last year, during the Idol finale week, Jordin’s “No Air” saw a 2% bump, “One Step at a Time” got a 443% jump. Carrie’s “Last Name” got a 193% jump (but there might have been a country even that week too). For albums: Carrie up 58%, Jordin up 15% and Daughtry up 31%.

In 2007, Daughty’s “Home” was up 17% and “It’s Not Over” was up 12%. Kelly’s “Never Again” rose 26% while Carrie’s Before He Cheats” dropped 16%. Elliott’s “Wait for You” dropped 3%”. Daughtry’s album sales increased by 45% and Carrie’s by 10% (Kelly’s album was not yet out). Taylor’s sales increased by 50% (it was his first time invited back). Others saw smaller gains or losses.

That’s true and is certainly the case with Taylor. I think that another factor is where in the lifecycle something is. If it’s relatively new single, it might have a larger impact than if it’s something that everybody already owns (like “No Air” or “Some Hearts”. That said, Kanye’s “Heartless” and Mraz’s “I’m Yours” are making strides today, so older songs can still be impacted.

Now that I’ve listened to both versions of NB, it’s probably better that Kris won. If I hadn’t watched Idol and only heard one of them on the radio, Kris’ version would have the potential to grow on me, while I can see myself growing to rapidly change the station if Adam’s came up. Kris just has a better mainstream commercial voice. Adam’s probably better off getting/writing a song that better suits him and his style to debut with.

Also … the fact that both of them get to debut the winner’s song makes me bitter that we never got to hear Archie’s version of Magic Rainbow.

The Power of American Idol!

It’s interesting that the all of the iTunes Top 10 Song list currently have to do with American Idol!

Either they were AI’s Top 2 or guest artists whose songs were performed on the show. The Top single is Don’t Stop Believin’ from Glee which was heavily promoted during AI and was sung by the AI contestants on the show!

Adam is not going to show as strong sales this week on itunes because so many of his fans bought his downloads earlier in the season…I am actually surprised he is doing as well as he is….as we saw with the leak earlier this season, Adam had 7 of the top 10 idol itunes, so i would expect less demand now since his fans already have most of his collection…Kris should (and is) get a big bump from his win

Thanks for expressing my pent up frustration with this ineptitude. I lost a sibling to this disease too, and I thought it was great that AI allowed Cook to do something for this cause, but dammit, you’d think that the label, the show and itunes would sacrifice a little space, a little corner to a charity single, to something other than banners for Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and their own self-interests. I was very patient but I take this half-assed effort personally. I’m hoping that more effort is done before the opportunity for this cause slips away.

I would think iTunes would be able to determine how many copies of Permanent were purchased since after the finale and up until the live version was posted. They should take that amount and allocate it to the ABC2.

eh, last year Cook’s songs dominated during the season and still dominated after the finale. Kris is seeing more of a rise now cause he is the American Idol.
Thought it seems to me that both have the same number of songs in the top 100, but many of Kris songs are two versions of the same. (why are there two versions anyway?) So, Adam does have more songs there. Certain Kris’s songs are selling more though.

I don’t know who to blame for the delay, but it makes RCA/itunes look cheap. I’m sure many of those purchasing the regular version assume they’re making a donation.

Well I’m one of those that purchased Permanent this morning thinking it was the right one. I come on here sporadically and luckily read somewhere that I didn’t buy the one with proceeds going to the Cancer charity fund. Why do we get to hear the single from both contestants? Is that because TPTB really wanted Adam to win? And they want to make money off him despite him getting second place?

If I recall correctly, in the past both finalists put out a studio version of the winner’s single, but only the winner’s was released to radio. The only season I’ve watched prior to last season was S3, and I know both Fantasia and Diana have studio versions of “I Believe”.

Seriously, Cook needs to get on the horn with the VIPs at Apple and solicit them for a ginormous contribution to his charity, because they really blew it this morning.

And he’s taken hits (check out the Best and Worst photos in the LA Times coverage this morning) for doing another “power ballad” instead of rocking out. A lot of folks–even in the press–don’t know the Adam (Cook) story or forgot about it (or just want to be snarky).

I think this is how Itunes usually works, there’s nothing strange about this, it’s their method. TPTB made it sound like the performance would be available right away, but probably cause there really wasn’t any other way to say it. I mean, they wouldn’t say “buy it in 14 hours, 37 minutes and 28 seconds”.
I know some videos of performances (if not all) during the season got banners when they became available, so maybe David’s video could get one. But right now the banners are all for Adam/Kris, tomorrow that could change.

Where can I find Adam’s “Is Anybody Listening”? I’m not seeing it on ITunes.

Also any ideas on where I can find some of Adam’s other pre-Idol music. Versions I can put on my Ipod.

MJs link for David’s charity single is sending me to this album version – NOT the charity version. I was able to find it under the “What We are Listening to” portion of Itunes, but I presume that is eventually updated. MJ can you fix the link?

In fact, the charity version isn’t even listed with the rest of Cooks songs. Will there be a video?

I’m concentrating on getting the best results now that the charity version is on iTunes. Hopefully they’ll put up an ad, but who knows.
I think it’s pointless to cry over spilt milk and no one knows exactly who has the power to make “amends” for the iTunes shafu, if anyone does. It’s not as simple as switching a button and redirecting the profits.

I just want to see the charity version get its due (because it’s both beautiful and for a good cause).

Something similar happened with Archie last year. These two songs he did with some guy named Merrick Christensen that just showed up on his contestant page. It was extremely random.

They need to put Cook’s single up in the right place ASAP.

I am really disappointed with how Itunes handled David Cook’s charity single. The press release sent out by David Cook’s management said that the audio and video of the performance would be available after the show. Any rational thinking person would assume at the very least that it would be available the next morning. And fine, they didn’t want to spare a fucking Brain Cancer charity ad space, the least they could have done would be to make sure the song and video showed up when you do a search for David Cook. Now, who knows how many people bought the album version thinking they were donating to charity what a cluster fuck. A multimillion dollar corporation can’t get it right. Pathetic.

Yes this was a rant that has been building all day while I waited for Itunes to get their act together. And they still don’t have it right. No video no correct search function. ARGGGHHHH.

That can be said about a lot of the iTunes content today. Singles and videos showing up in the Album charts, the 18 hour delay on Cookie, no ‘official’ single entry (cover art) for Kris (but one for Adam), the name mixup in Kris’s bio….

They really screwed the pooch on this one.

For some reason when a new item goes up on iTunes the “be the first to submit a review” link appears for a while, even though people are submitting reviews. Then all at once a whole big batch show up, half of them saying “I can’t believe this is the first review.” Do not know why.

The live version of Permanent is simply gorgeous. It’s climbing on my feed and is currently at #61, so people are getting it. Sometimes things don’t run smoothly, but the important thing is that the track is there now and gaining sales. I can’t wait until the performance video goes up – maybe then we’ll get an ad (though I’m expecting nothing).

In any case, well worth the purchase for multiple reasons.

I also went looking for videos (in music videos) and found that a few from last night were available — the group So What and Gokey/Richie duet, maybe another, but nothing I wanted. So it appears that if the celebrity in the duet doesn’t consent, we won’t see other videos. Boo. I really needed Kiss and Queen, dangit!

Ok that was a bit OT, but I say all that to say, I’ve found no charity video of Permanent, even though I’m sure I heard them say that both would be available. Cluster**** is the word alright…

On a positive note, it’s cool that there is this kind of grass roots, viral campaign to publicize that it is indeed finally available, since Itunes and Idol are being next to worthless in that respect. I can’t see it on my Itunes page, but somebody said it’s up to #49 already.

It’s moving very quickly, and the album track hasn’t started to slip yet (which I assumed would happen as the charity version started to climb). It’s still #6 overall.

It’s still beyond shitty that there’s no front page ad, and I’m convinced the only reason there’s not is because they KNOW it will outsell the winner’s song(s). Taken together, the two versions of Permanent may be doing so already.

Jordin and Archie are adorable. I love them. Carrie has a twitter but doesn’t seem to use it. Man, the live version of “Permanent” is absolutely gorgeous over good speakers. One of DC’s best vocals ever. In order to celebrate the end of AI8 have it in a playlist with Kris and Alison downloads. Man, Kris really records well–love “Heartless,” “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Falling.” Still love Allison but her inexperience shows with her recordings but am loving “Someone to Watch Over Me.”
