Diana DeGarmo to Join Cast of Off-Broadway’s Toxic Avenger

Diana DeGarmo, a Season 3 finalist on “American Idol,” will join the cast of Off-Broadway’s The Toxic Avenger in August.

DeGarmo will step into the role of Sarah, “the sexy, blind librarian,” beginning Aug. 14 at New World Stages. She will succeed Celina Carvajal, who currently plays the role.

DeGarmo, who has been seen on Broadway in Hairspray and in the national tour of Brooklyn, said in a statement, “I am so excited to be coming back to New York to join the cast of The Toxic Avenger. When I saw the show, I laughed my head off. I can’t wait to start rehearsal ‘“ and to be blonde again!”

The campy rock musical is based on Lloyd Kaufman’s 1985 cult film of the same name.

But first, Diana will begin a run as the narrator in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat with the Lyric Theater of Oklahoma on July 21. Season 4 Idol, Anthony Federov plays Joseph in the production.

    This is not to be missed. Trust me, as a longtime fan of Diana’s I can tell you that she does comedy very, very well. She’ll be a hysterical “blind, sexy librarian.”

    This was such a strange season of Idol for me. Fantasia was so much better than everyone else I really didn’t pay that much attention to Diana or Jasmine. To me Fantasia’s best competition was elimiated earlier. So, I am really happy for Diana that she is making a career in music. She has a great voice for theater. How fun for both of them that Anthony is also in this show. They both have fantastic voices, just maybe not contemporary pop/rock voices.

    How old is Diana now? 23? It has been so long since she was on AI that it is tough to consider the person in the above picture our “little Diana.” She is doing so well, working steadily while so many others from the show are struggling.

    I think Diana is to be saluted. At a young age, she’s become a genuine theater pro. And if anyone thinks that’s easy, or second-rate or something, boy are you wrong. The discipline, hard work and energy required to do a touring musical, or one on Broadawy, are immense. Many pop musicians simply are not up to the task.

    If AI turns out some folks who become excellent Broadway performers, it’s done a great service. Not everyone is gonna be a pop start…
