Diana DeGarmo on The Set of The Young and Restless – PHOTO

Entertainement Weekly has a first look at Diana DeGarmo on the set of the Young And Restless.

The Season 3 Idol alum is playing…get this…a Jersey Girl! The southern belle (she hails from Georgia) will don some big hair and an accent to portray Angelina, “the ambitious daughter of mob boss Angelo Veneziano (Mike Starr). His little angel wants a career in music, but she’s not exactly the next Mariah Carey. ”

She plays a girl who can’t sing?  That’s going to be a stretch for the songbird, who as already proven her mettle not only on Idol, but in Broadway roles in Hairspray and Hair.

Diana debuts on Y&R on October 31

More about Angelina, from an interview Diana did for this weeks TV Guide:

“She’s an over the top, gum smacking, tone-deaf princess whose hair is as large as her attitude-and I’m having a blast,” says DeGarmo. “Angelina believes she’s Barbra Streisand crossed with Celine Dion and her father-who thinks she sings like a choir of angels-really puts the pressure on Devon to show her the ropes and make her a success. It’s hilarious because it puts the poor kid in a horrible predicament.” Angelina’s not merely content with superstardom-she will also develop a mad crush on Kevin Fisher. And she wants him bad “Angie has her eyes, her heart, and her body set on landing Kevin-and it scares him to death.” says DeGarmo with a laugh.

Who would have thought little 16 year-old Diana DeGarmo would be playing such a role on a soap opera? Go get ‘em, Diana!

The twists and turns of an former idol’s career are interesting to watch, especially when they are years removed from their season. Diana seems pretty fearless in her career choices (Hair, anyone?), and even if she’s not the most well known of the AI alum, she’s got a great career that really seems to have gained momentum over the past couple years. I have a ton of respect for her and I hope being associated with CBS daytime leads to an opportunity to do a pilot or some guest spots in primetime.

I wish her the best. And my own experience with the Y & R is that my mom watched this soap when I was a 5th grader. It’s the only soap I have ever watched. But I haven’t watched it for years…..more than years….. lol…

Good luck Diana. I was hoping you would win AI. :)

P.S. I also saw her in the last show of Hair in NY.
