I do recall at one point Diana recording some kind of R&B funk songs that used to be on her myspace page. I think she was trying to go that route before she settled on country. So I'm thinking that she kind of went through a bit of identity crisis after Idol.
I agree and she said pretty much the same thing in the interview. It's tough to achieve a level of fame at 16 or 17 because who you are and what you like a few years later is often much different from what people remember of you. In some ways being out of the spotlight doing musical theater roles the past few years might have been the best thing for her. She seems to have regrouped from AI pretty well.

But being so young and told that she shouldn't do country by big-time record execs will do that to a person. Glad she's found her niche that she knew was right to begin with.

Thanks for posting this, MJ. It's quite interesting to hear the stories of someone who did Idol so young and is a true product of all that is wrong with how 19R used to handle most contestants post-Idol. I don't think it's a stretch to say that she got possibly the shortest end of the stick of any top 2 contestant (Justin might be tied). For what it was at the time, Blue Skies might not have been the best album and certainly wasn't the best fit for her musically (I've listened to her country songs and think she's found her place), but it could have been more marketable had the label invested the time and money in it that other runner-ups have received. As it stands, I believe Diana is the second worst-selling runner-up from Idol, second to Justin G. She had the lowest 1st week sales, but when all was said and done, sold a bit better than Justin overall.

I like Diana a lot and wish her success. She's a true talent and has handled everything much better than one ever would have expected from the chirpy 16-year-old we saw on Idol; she seems very intelligent, hard-working and grounded in reality. It's nice to see her having a lot of success in the Broadway realm. Sometimes it takes a lot for the Idols to find themselves after Idol. The song "Find Me" Diana wrote that was discussed in the interview is quite telling of her journey.

Never liked her on the show and, really, I still don't find her personable. It's too bad about the stalker, though.

It's good to hear how her debut album went. I never saw her as pop-rock. What was RCA thinking? Good grief. Pop-country was definitely more her so I have to respect her for knowing who she was.

Love her. Always have. Her country EP is fantastic, I'm itching for more! I knew back then that she was best for country, hell even Simon said it suited her on country week! She's so talented and a wonderful person.

I've been a fan of Diana's since American Idol. To this day she's my favorite. Having met her I can say she's just like how she comes across in the interview: warm, intelligent, has a great sense of humor, and has a positive outlook that has gotten her through all the bumps in the road since AI.

I also loved her Blue Skies cd but I can see why she has regrets. At least she's been able to continue her career on her terms and has found contentment.

Never put out a video to go with the single, any advertising or promotion.

There actually was this video that they put out, but the less that's said about that the better.

She made me LOL when she described what it means to be a gemini. Her description of David Foster's reaction to all the other songs on her Blue Skies album was also funny. Too bad RCA didn't listen to Mr. Foster because he seemed to have a better handle on Miss DeGarmo's talents than RCA. It's always nice to see how well-adjusted and engaging she grew up to be. I remember coming off of American Idol people had concerns her stage mom would burn her out.

By the way, thank you mj for the non-season 8 entry. Sometimes it's nice to get a thread about an old favorite. :)

Her first album wasn't so bad. I liked several songs on it. The lack of sales was due to the fact that the record company/19 made absolutely no effort to promote it or even let anybody know it was out there. They released 1 single and then didn't bother anymore. Never put out a video to go with the single, any advertising or promotion. Diana didn't stand a chance.

It's hard to believe that personable, funny young woman sitting in that interview was once derided as a pageant bot lacking identity. She seems self-assured and confident, despite her AI experience.

Diana is a sweet young lady and has been through hell with that stalker issue. Plus, she was thrown under the bus by TPTB with her allbum, which was not really her. Glad the truth finally came out and she is free of them and having a very nice career.

Her album was a joke, half of the songs were songs Kara couldn't sell to anyone but 19E.

Wow...I didn't know that 19 and Kara's history went back that far. The power of Paula, back then, I guess...since her and Kara were BFFs back then, too.

What a personable young woman! She gave a wonderful interview. It's really too bad that the label wasn't willing to listen to her as to the kind of album she should make. It's nice that they seem to be giving this year's winners more control over the album content. What a nightmare she went through with the cyberstalker. I remember hearing about it when it happened. Three years is a long time to endure such an invasion of your life!
