Barely crowned the American Idol, David Cook is already at work on his upcoming album for RCA records.

David tells OK Magazine that one of his collaborators will be Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace. After he performed their song “Innocent” on American Idol, Maida “reached out to him” and they’ve been corresponding via email. Says David, “I’m really excited I get to work with Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace because I’m a huge fan of that band. To be able to work with Raine is huge for me.”

And if y’all are wondering about the fate of David’s pre-Idol album, Analog Heart, some of those tunes might be making their way onto the album. David has submitted some of the songs to be used on the record, “Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re going to see where the vibe goes with the new stuff and see if they fit.” Will the album be re-released? “I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think there are any talks right now. That record was great; I had a lot of fun making it, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d rather not dwell in the past.” David adds, “I think if the songs fit in with what Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m doing currently, great, but if not, that was just a moment in my life.”

Analog Heart was available as a download on Amazon and a few other outlets before it was yanked offline in the middle of the competition.

Last item: Part 2 and Part 3 of the David Cook TV Guide fan questions interview is up. What was the most difficult song to learn for Idol? Surprisingly, to me at least–”Little Sparrow” from Dolly Parton week. The combination of working with a mentor for the first time, and re-working the female-centric lyrics posed a challenge for David, but in the end, he was pleased with the results…

• JessC77

I’m happy for David! I’m sure the album will be great!

• candie

He is so cool when speaking about the songs on Analog Heart. If they don’t fit with what he is doing currently then that’s okay because it (Analog Heart) was just a moment in his life. He is so down to earth and intelligent. Darn I love this guy!

• star

That’s cool. Raine did some work with Kelly Clarkson on Breakway.

• smartcookie

I guess that explains why Analog Heart was pulled and never put back — because they’re thinking of maybe using some of the songs for the new album and they don’t want the old, under-arranged (or however you would explain the difference between the way Cook put them together on his own time and what a major studio can do) cd out there competing or comparing to fully produced, professional takes on the same songs.

Interesting. He also supposedly has songs from the half-done, unreleased album he was working on before he tried out for Idol, and I guess those may be in play for the new cd, too.

I would love to hear “The Truth” and “Optimistic to a Fault” on the new Idol cd.

So Dolly Parton week was his hardest. Also interesting. That was BloodPressureGate week as well. Maybe it was a combination of all those things.

• candie

I wonder, does he have to share proceeds from Analog Heart which he wrote, recorded and produced himself, with the people he is in contract with now.
Seems like that should be all his. Maybe, they own him and everything he has ever done? I have been curious about Analog heart for some time. I don’t understand how they could yank it off of Amazon when it was produced before AI. I guess I don’t understand all that contract and legal stuff.

• Pam

I got a chance to read that last night and I’m really excited about what he had to say! I can’t wait for the CD! :D

• mar_4DC

As much as I really love his music on Analog Heart I do agree with him that he should move forward, or as he was fond of saying to Simon on AI, it’s all about “progression”. I feel this is the reason we won’t see any of the covers he did from AI on his new album either. As much as I loved all his songs he did on the show, I agree those were in his past as well. I’m happy for him no matter what he does.

• http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

That’s interesting. Little Sparrow is one of my favorite Cookie songs. I liked both his live performance and the studio version.

• Trina

He must be so ecstatic to work with Raine!

How weird is it to have so much information this soon? Last year we still knew nothing about the record deals.

• awilliams

I think songwriting and any kind of writing is really meant to be a cathartic thing for the writer. Once it’s out and done there’s no need to go back.

I think Cook will be a different type of Idol winner than we’ve seen before.

• Hoothere115

:D :D :D Raine Maida, oh yeah! Your dreams are coming true, Mr Cook.

• candie

I agree he should move on and do new. I don’t think putting some of the songs that he had done on AI is wise because most of his fans already bought those songs off of itunes. Why buy them again?

• Hoothere115

What I think he will do with the AH songs is re-work them. Maybe change some of the instrumentation and re-record the vocal (his voice has kind of ‘evolved’ since this album – he could probably make the songs even more stunning now) You know, make it seem a little more fresh and updated… progressed.

• Layla

Really enjoyed parts 2 and 3 of the TV guide interview-some rather good questions. He seems to be now rather annoyed by the Kim thing, which I completely understand.

His responses to the sexy/Cougar (hate that bloody word) questions were well-answered.

Loved seeing his tat up close.

Can completely understand his response to using songs from AH on his new record. He’s older now and has the idol experience under his belt. His head is probably in a whole ‘nother space and time. Although from selfish point of view I can see “Silver” being reworked and being a big hit.

Totally agree with who said that he will be a different kind of Idol-and that’s a good thing!

• Haunt

Are you there God? It’s me, Haunt.

Please, if David gets to bring any of his Analog Heart material over to the new album please let it be “Straight Ahead”, “Searchlights” and/or “Makeover”.

Thank you. Umm… Amen. :)

• Duke

So I’m interested in finding out, would anyone on here classify themselves as a “Cougar for Cook” because that’s all i’m hearing about on the news.

• Layla

With 2 teen daughters I guess I fall in the age range to be considered a Cougar but I hate that bloody word and I think it’s misleading-people shouldn’t think that is his only fanbase!

• Pam

With 2 teen daughters I guess I fall in the age range to be considered a Cougar but I hate that bloody word and I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s misleading-people shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that is his only fanbase!

Thank you for saying that because it’s true. That is truly misleading for sure. His fanbase covers men, women, and children of different ages.

• Haunt

Well, I’m a 38-year old man… but I do have something of a man-crush on him, so does that count?

• GwendolynD

Yay! Raine Maida, huh? That’s kinda awesome.

Well…if Analog Heart never reappears, I’ll just be thankful that I bought it before it was too late. :)

And as for the “cougar” thing, well…it’s out there because they do strange things, like make big signs for the live show, or they tell him they’ve had dreams about making out with him and he’s a good kisser, or they ask to touch his earlobes and tell him that his earlobes are “meaty”. Yeah. There are some crazy cougars out there, for sure.

• JessC77

Cougar…hate the word!! How old do you have to be, to be a Cougar? I do love David though!!

ETA: I much rather perfer Cookie to Cougar!!
So, I’m a Cookie!! :)

• sleepyinsomniac

It’s terribly misleading to say that Cook’s fans are mainly Cougars because he has so many fans that are not. I myself am Cook’s age and most of the other fans I know are of the same age.

Having said that, it is for me very interesting that the media focuses on that segment of his fans. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it is not very common that such a large group of fans will focus on one particular contestant on AI. In this season’s case, instead of going with the younger and what many would consider, more family friendly David Archuleta, many of what the media considers “cougars” went instead with Cook.

I refuse however to believe that this is all about him being attractive and all that. A lot of it has to do with the fact that these older women grew up with music that are more in line with what is considered “rock” these days. To a certain degree, maybe even more “rock” than what is “rock” these days.

Of course it doesn’t hurt that he is attractive. As OK! said, sexiest idol ever. But let’s also not discount that a lot of it has to do with him being just a great artist that appeals to a broad spectrum of fans that just happens to include older women.

• jan

This just makes me happy – collaborating with someone he admires – songs from Analog Heart considered for the album – I like to think he is going to do it his way!!

• candie

To me it is somewhat of a put down for the media to keep bringing up that only older women like him (Cougars). To me it is insulting because its like insinuating Cougars are dirty old women that want his body. It really bugs me. I have an 11 yr old son who likes David Cook. A 20 yr old daughter who is in college and loves DC. And me who is barely under 40 and I am a big fan also. Does that make me a “Cougar”?? I mean how old do you have to be to be considered a Cougar. I love his music and the awesome person he seems to be but that doesn’t mean I want to go to bed with him. I get so excited when a new artist like David comes along on American Idol and can just win us all over. It doesn’t hurt that he is totally attractive looking. I know he will do great in the future!

• candie

Sorry for the confusing post. My brain goes faster than I can type sometimes.
LOL

• Layla

RE this Cougar thing…it is something the media has picked up on and can’t let go. I think that DC knows that he has fans of all ages and of both sexes. When he performed during the press junket that was pretty obvious. Plus they went crazy at TRL for him. I’m sure his fan mail reflects his wide appeal.

• skylight1219

They let Taylor put a few of his own songs on his album, but, they were watered down versions.

• Pam

For those that are curious, here is the Mediabase ad for TOML here.

• justic

i hate the idea of using AH songs in the new CD.
This CD should not be a greatest hits album.
he need to put only new music in his album-songs no one heard before
if he wants an album that will stand the test of time he should not recycle his own material. he can do so much than that.
the man is a music genius for god sake!
look at his previous CD’s with Axium and AH. he demonstrated growth from CD to CD. now There should be growth as well, not going backwards.

• langslowblack

I think the statement about using previous songs has more to do with the unreleased album. It would make sense, as that was more where he is at now than Analog Heart. But who knows?

Well, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a 38-year old manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ but I do have something of a man-crush on him, so does that count?

LMAO :lol_tb:

I just turned 45 last Monday, and though I am in the so-called “cougar” age group, I resent being labled so. I thought he looked a bit creepy in the beginning (MJ was my pick from auditions), then he reeled me in with his music. THEN, I reached the stage where I would do him in the middle of a crowded street in front of my husband. Just kidding.

He’s very mature for being 25… more like 35. So, only a ten year gap. Does that still make me a cougar?? (like my logic?)

Anyway, always a fan of the music first! I was lucky enough to get Analog Heart before it disappeared from Amazon, and I strongly believe that we are in for lots of tasty musical treats in the years to come. He writes some great lyrics, and that voice…..!

PS-just kidding about the just kidding part…..

MJ’s gonna beat me for getting all fangirly…

• http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

The whole “Cougars” thing reminds me of the Soul Patrol BS and we all know how that played out for Taylor. DC would be wise to discount this quickly or else he’ll be stuck with a bunch of Bedazzled creatures in heavy makeup yearning for his bod!

• Jolene

I really hope that if the album has any previous work by DC, it’s from his unreleased 2nd album, and not AH. The fans heard AH, there’s no need to take space in the new album with songs we already know and love. Not even for better production value.
I guess I wouldn’t mind 1 song, at most. And that song should be “Silver”. But that’s about it.

I do hope they let him use as much as possible from the unreleased album, though. He finished that one right before AI, so it’s pretty fresh, and represents his artistry at this point in his life (well, at the point he auditioned, but that’s close enough). Plus – he put two years into that record, I hate the thought of it rotting away somewhere.

• cheese

The work on the album begins this week, and David needs to show the label his strengths as a songwriter. Unless he had time to write a bunch of songs during his time on the show (seems unlikely), of course he’ll have to submit stuff he wrote pre-Idol.

David is probably just putting forward what he considers to be his best songs from both of his solo albums – I would expect 0 to 1 songs from Analog Heart to make the cut (based on his own statements on his old blog, his sound had already evolved quite a bit by the time he finished the 2nd CD in 2007). He does have a whole album full of songs that no one heard before, which is something that none of the previous Idol winners have had, as far as I know.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see whether the label actually likes them, but the fact that RCA included a mention of his accolades for Analog Heart in his press release makes me think they’re prepared to put him forward as a real songwriter and not just The American Idol.

• Layla

I love reading these posts…makes me so hopeful for the album he’s going to be dropping in the autumn.

I really love his vocals on “Silver” and although I understand how he wants to go forward- that song, with a bit of tweaking- is radio ready now!

Sorta off topic- does anyone know if we get news coming out of rehearsals and the tour itself?

• Haunt

While I agree with what most are saying about not wanting this to end up being nothing more than a “greatest hits” album, I’d also point out that not everyone managed to get their hands on AH before it was torn away from us. Fortunately I was one of the lucky ones and I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it for months now. But like cheese says, David is looking for examples of his strongest writing, which likely doesn’t include anything he could have possibly gotten done while competing for the last nine months. If any of his previous work is being considered for rerelease or reworking on his newest album, I personally prefer just about anything from AH to any of his Axium work, and the three titles I mentioned earlier are my favorites.

Assuming his new album will feature the fairly standard 12 to 15 tracks, I don’t think fitting “Searchlights” (or even “Silver” since that seems to be the overwhelming favorite for everyone but me) into the mix would really qualify as treading water and not moving forward.

Having said all of that, I’m also looking forward to hearing completely new material.

• yf7184

Great news. If any of the analog heart tunes is going to reworked, I hope it is Stitches. I like the current raw-ish version but also think that it is a kind of track that will be even better with a high degree of production.

• awilliams

RE: the Cougar nonsense.

My husband and I are early 50s. We’re both products of the 60s and 70s music scene. My husband is a musician and has played with a number of bands. Our kids 21 and 17 and both have been involved in the arts. We were cheering for Cook as the ‘winner’ of AI but were equally cheering on the others. It takes nerve and confidence and alot of rehearsal to do what they do. I don’t think I could memorize songs, learn choreography, know which camera is on, etc.

The media needs to get over the age-difference crap in music. Like Cooke we had an eclectic musical upbringing, listening to big band, and Broadway and Classical music that our parents played. Then there was the rock and pop of our own time. I remember when FM radio was considered the “cool” radio to listen to. Now I’m finding that NPR, as much as I love their programs, is retreating into the past and not addressing current music much. Shame, because they could be giving some airplay to the upcoming Indie artists.

Good music and lyrics are not age-related. Talent and a good song transcends any age. That’s why so many songs stand the test of time and that’s why my kids love Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I remember when my father heard “Yesterday” he thought it was a lovely, poignant song, even though he wasn’t a fan of the Beatles. My dad took me to see Benny Goodman at a jazz fest and I just loved it.

I’m looking forward to following the top 10, just to see where life takes them. In particular I will follow Cooke, Archulata, and Jason Castro of the lads because I sense they are the most invested in the music. Not sure about M. Johns – he seems more showman to me and I am led to follow the musician/songwriter more.

I sense alot of potential in Castro – he could be an “outside the box” musician, drawing on many genres and I would really like to know more about the Columbian influence. If you have not heard the traditional music of Columbia please check it out. It is beautiful and complex.

Of the laddettes I’ll follow Carly and Brooke, again because they seem more invested in the music and the process, and not just themselves.

Music rant over. :)

• http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I like “Silver” well enough, but my faves from AH are definitely “The Truth”, “Straight Ahead”, “Makeover”, “Let Go”, and “Fall Back into Me”.

I don’t really think anything from AH should be included on his major label debut just for the fact that they are already on an album, and as has been mentioned, this is about a progression. He’s certainly grown as a person, musician, songwriter since he wrote and produced AH, and I’d like to see some fruits of that. Revisiting the past, even with work on the songs and better production, is taking a step back, imo.

The unreleased album that he’d finished recording at the end of last year is a different story. I can see some of that being included on the album if TPTB like it enough. They’re still new songs that we’ve never heard. The selfish side of me wants the strongest tracks from that, combined with collaborations between David and some hit songwriters (Raine Maida is a great start! I really liked the tracks on Breakaway that he worked on, and what a thrill for David to be working with one of his idols!). All of that could easily make for a really fantastic album.

All that said, if none of his pre-AI work makes the album and submitting the songs for consideration serves no purpose except to convince TPTB that he has the talent and vision to have a big say in the creative process of making this album, I will be happy.

• Margaux

If a man over 40 is a fan of a female singer in her 20s, it’s not even newsworthy. I dislike the implication that a woman over 40 who finds a young male musician attractive is desperate or failing to go gracefully into her nursing home. I’m with awilliams, I still love the music and have never stopped seeking out good new performers. The ones I grew up with are getting up there in years, and I welcome fresh energetic young men, and women, to keep the music going.

(Granted, it would help if we didn’t behave like fools).

As for Cook’s pre-Idol music, there may be legal reasons he wants to keep his old recordings under wraps for now. Wouldn’t 19 own anything he released now?

• JessC77

Excellent point Margaux!!

• http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Re: the cougar thing – as a simple answer, no, I am not one. I’m only 2 years older than him (so, Dave, when you’re done with Kim Caldwell, call me. ;) ).

I do think it’s rather silly and short-sighted for anyone to be lumping his fans into that one general category though. From all I’ve seen, he has fans of all ages, both male and female. The more *ahem* vocal ones may be from a certain age demographic, but that does not mean that they’re the only ones who will buy his music and merch and go to concerts.

I do think that his team would be smart to get control NOW of whatever craziness there is, though.

• Michelle

The whole cougar/tween thing with both the D’s is insulting cause it implies females only appreciate them as part of some age-inappropriate crush.

IMO analog heart >>>> axium stuff so if we get the same sort of growth on this album I’ll be really happy. 19/RCA do *not* water him down!

• reinharv

I refuse however to believe that this is all about him being attractive and all that. A lot of it has to do with the fact that these older women grew up with music that are more in line with what is considered à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ these days. To a certain degree, maybe even more à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ than what is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ these days.

I can attest to that. I am an older fan and I was brought up on rock and particularly liked the kind of rock I was brought up on then and not what people call rock today. That is why I was first attracted to him as a competitor not just an attractive man. I picked him up from the start as one of my favorites for the fact that he was a rocker. I mean who doesn’t like a rocker??? Is he easy on the eyes? Well yes he certainly is. He was just “cool” to me from the start though I thought his hair was ridiculous and felt he quite possibly cut his own hair without using a mirror LOL. I thought that definitely needed improvement if he was going to appeal more to people as having the whole package so to speak. I didn’t like ugly rockers in my day so why would I like them today? I mean look at Bon Jovi–that man is still hawt looking and still going strong.

You see we older female fans know he’s “hawt” because we are not blind, nor dead yet but most of us are realistic and still have our feet firmly planted in reality. He’s brought us back to when we were younger and enjoyed rock then and still can enjoy rock today and reminded us what we felt like when we were younger listening to that kind of music. I just love his music first and foremost and so we voted for him in droves because he was fantastic first and foremost and he made us feel young again enjoying our rock days.

David knows he has “cougar” fans and he’s flattered. I prefer to be a Cookie fan and only jokingly use the term cougar but am not in the true sense or meaning of that word and what it implies. Cook also has male fans who enjoy his type of music and in fact his music appeals to all ages and both genders and that’s a very good fanbase to have and he knows it. :clap_tb:

Am I in the minority that would rather have stuff from OTAF on the new cd instead of AH? I (along w/ alot of other ppl) already have AH, so want the OTAF stuff more!

Am I in the minority that would rather have stuff from OTAF on the new cd instead of AH? I (along w/ alot of other ppl) already have AH, so want the OTAF stuff more

I actually think that’s the majority. I know if I had it my way, Songs from AH won’t make it to the new album. I want room for things I haven’t heard yet! Or, possibly, a double disc.
Yeah, that would do nicely.

I think not many people know about the 2nd album, so that might account for why it’s mentioned less.

• Joey507

Hey everyone. Been a reader for about a week now and posting for the first time.

Honestly, I’m torn about Analog Heart songs appearing on the new album. Analog Heart is an awesome album in my opinion. I could see several songs being hits (The Truth, Let Go, Porcelain, Straight Ahead to name a few). Bringing those songs more mainstream by them appearing on the new album would be great.

But at the same time, I look at it from the persepective of greed, in that I already own those songs, and want new music! I’ve purchased everything of his that I could get my hands on (iTunes performances, Analog Heart, and the Axium albums Blindsided and The Story Thus Far). All are on regular rotation on my iPod, and I don’t think there’s been a day since the very early weeks of the competition that a day has gone by without my listening to at least one of his songs.

I’m more bummed that we may never get to hear much off that second solo album that was to be released until he appeared on Idol. Can’t they just let him release that album to hold us all over until the tour is over and new album drops?

• candie

PrplDva – LMAO !! Just kidding about just kidding. Love it.
I was just kidding about not wanting to jump him too. LOL

Okay no more MJ sorry just had to have some fun!!

• candie

Darn, I am having a hard time typing today must be my cougar nails. LOL

• awilliams

I really wish I had heard some of Analog Heart before it was taken off. Oh well…will have to wait I guess.

One last afterthought on the music and older people (women?) silliness.
My kids’ school has a deal where the older arts’ students mentor the young kids coming in. This facilitates a nice atmosphere of kids helping each other out.

That is how I feel about the music world. We keep ourselves alive and current by listening to what the newer upcoming musicians are doing, otherwise we atrophy. Plus, these kids need encouraging.

Sheesh, I shoulda been a music teacher.

• CooksCookie

Chris Daughtry was able to re-work one of his pre-idol songs on his cd (Breakdown) – but imho, Cookie’s pre-idol stuff is way stronger. So, I wouldn’t mind hearing a song or two from Analog Heart on the new disc – because they are actually pretty good, and I’d like to hear them (and the rest of the world to hear them) be great.

• http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I doubt they’ll include more than a pre-Idol song or two. Can’t wait to see what new stuff he comes up with…

• Mackie

I am a 30 yr old married wife, no kids yet and I am a fan of both Davids. I have 3 other female colleagues about my age who are fans of David Cook and I have 1 male and 2 female colleagues who love David Archuleta (late 20′s). So I don’t think we are categorised as cougars or tweens or teens. So just you know. :happy_tb:

• reinharv

I don’t think David Cook should include any of his stuff from Analog Heart. He doesn’t like to dwell in the past as he’s proven when he decided not to reprise a song he had already done for the final 2 night. Maybe he’ll look at something that he did on the CD he had finished prior to becoming a contestant but it would have to fit into the “vibe” of his new Album. I’ve already bought Analog Heart and a few people have already posted some of that stuff on YouTube and elsewhere when they had it pulled.

Chris Daughtry included a pre-idol song but I don’t think he wrote it by himself but he took it and re-worked it and then released it as his own for his debut album.

All Cook needs is to find lyrics that he can really get behind and the arrangement will follow. He obviously has an eye and ear for stuff like that. He wants this album to be something that will withstand the test of time and be something he is very proud of. People are expectly a lot from him–just like they expected from him every week during Idol when he raised the bar.

That first album can make or break you. It has to be outstanding.

• candie

I did get the chance to buy Analog Heart, but thought, I like what I am hearing now from David Cook. I really wasn’t interested in the album he wrote, recorded and produced himself. Not until I started hearing how great it was and then it was to late to buy it. I wouldn’t mind having the chance to purchase it, since I missed out before…

• hollygo9

A cougar – see Samantha Jones, Blanche Devareaux, SueAnn Nivens, etc.

If you do not share qualities with these characters, you are not a cougar.
I would define us as fangirls, music lovers and people who appreciate art and music.

That said, am I the only one rooting for ‘Fall Back Into Me’?

• reinharv

With two daughters who are actually older than Cook I might be called a cougar; but by strict definition I am not. I was brought up on rock and he happened to do rock. Sure he’s “pretty” and that helps because I am not dead yet! I still liked him when he had that funny spiked red-streaked hair because he still had great features and who doesn’t like a rocker? I didn’t like ugly rockers when I was young so why would I today. Packaging does make a difference but isn’t that true anytime? I mean it’s hard to like an ugly male actor even though they are fantastic. It helps when someone has that “hawt” type of appeal.

I would prefer to be just a Cookie fan who appreciates his music and it’s nice to feel young again knowing I could still be cool and enjoy rock music and go to concerts and stuff. Just haven’t felt that way about any artist lately and never inclined to buy their music like I have with Cook. Now add to the fact that he’s a rocker who isn’t afraid to cry and show his soft side, that he is genuinely a nice person, etc., –well that just pretty much did me in. He has “it” and the whole package.

Ladies, ladies ladies, I do not think that age alone defines a cougar. In addition to being over a certain age, I do believe you also have to:

- Color your hair in a shade as far from its natural state as possible.
- wear your teenage daughter’s clothing.
- Have plastic surgery to correct anything that may reveal your age (ssshhh, don’t tell them we can tell that their lips really aren’t that plump.)
- Go to bars often in you best hoochie mama gear.
- Dance provacatively like all that you’re missing is the pole.
- At said bar, you must chase after only men at least one decade younger than you.
- You cannot date men your age or older.
- And, I’m pretty sure you’re only allowed to use your younger men for one night stands, throw them away like yesterday’s garbage, and move on to the next frat boy.
- I also think it’s pretty important that you have no shame.
- Important Note: In order to be a Cougar for Cook, I think it’s imperative that in addition to liking his music, you must also want to abandon your families and have hotel sex with him.

Sound like you? No? Thought so. If you do not meet the above criteria, I’m afraid that you do not qualify as a Cougar for Cook, and you are just a plain old David Cook fan.

• JOJOSIE

He has a short period of time to put together an album and hampered by the fact that he has a tour to headline I feel it would be smart to included some of the songs from his previous albums. Very few people have heard any of his previous music except for some of his Internet fans. He needs to appeal to a lot of folks who never go on the net or if they do don’t go to fan sites. From my previous experience with other Idols, some people are actually disappointed that they don’t include some of the songs they did so well on the show. We have downloaded them on our computers but most folks haven’t. I’m sure I’ll buy and like whatever he does, I’m a fan.

• Haunt

I’m amused by the number of people that say they don’t want David to use anything from Analog Heart because it is dwelling in the past and he’s all about “progression” now, and in the very same post will say that him using something off of his other previous album would be okay… presumably just because not as many people have heard it as have heard AH. Now I’m pretty sure I get the sentiment here, with folks understandably wanting to hear new stuff rather than something they already have. But let’s not dismiss AH as being a step backward and pretend that another album from basically the same period, whether released or not, isn’t the same thing.

• Jenn_AI Fan

If you haven’t heard Analog Heart, you can listen to it at: http://www.davidcooktheamericanidol.com/music/.

It is not terribly unusual to have an artist who independently released a record include a song or two from that record on his/her major label debut. It will just be a question as to whether it fits into the new CD.

• http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Haunt, to me, the difference between the two albums is that one was released, one was not. In the case of the unreleased one, that’s what he was doing immediately preceding AI. And, if his time on AI hasn’t drastically changed him, I’d say it’s closest to who he is as an artist today. As I think cheese said way upthread, per his own words in an old blog post, this album had a different sound than AH. As someone else pointed out, you can hear the progression he makes from his Axium stuff to Analog Heart, so I’d think you’d be able to hear a progression from AH to the newer stuff too. And that goes back to what I said about it being most representative of where he stands today as an artist.

Also, the two albums were not quite during the exact same period. Analog Heart was released in early-to-mid 2006. From what I understand, those songs were mostly written during his college years. The other album was just finished recording in December 2007. Sure, same general period – it’s not like there were any huge life changes for him at that point, except maybe graduating from college and moving away from home. But still at a point in his life where things were changing…

Also re: Chris – he had at least one pre-Idol song on his album as mentioned, “Breakdown”, which was originally two songs on the Absent Element cd – “Breakdown” and “Conviction” which WERE his originals. The verses of the new version are from “Conviction” while the chorus came from “Breakdown.” “Home” was also a song he’d written pre-AI (though not far in advance, since it was about him leaving home to go be on AI in the first place), and there is one other song on the album that he has sole credit on – “Gone.” I’m not sure when that was written.

Taylor had, what, 3 pre-AI songs on his album? So, just saying that it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility for Cook to have one or more songs from his pre-AI work on his album.

One thought I had earlier for a potential collab – David Hodges and Ben Moody. They worked with Kelly Clarkson on Breakaway (“Because of You” and “Addicted”), wrote “What About Now” on Daughtry’s album, and David Hodges and Mike Elizondo wrote “1000 Miles” with Blake for his album. Just a thought. Could be an interesting collaboration.

• cheese

But letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not dismiss AH as being a step backward and pretend that another album from basically the same period, whether released or not, isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the same thing

My understanding is that Analog Heart was recorded during the middle part of 2005 (three years ago) and not released until May 2006 because David didn’t have the resources to get it distributed. He finished the second album in November 2007 (and the song line-up changed a bit between August and November, maybe suggesting that he did a lot of writing in 2007). He was planning to release it in March 2008 so it’s not exactly ancient history. It’s probably fair to assume that something written in the last year is going to be different from something David wrote when he was 21-22 years old. David said that the album has a different vibe, and unlike Analog Heart, it wasn’t self-produced.

Sooo, I’m going to cling to the promise of the mystery album if the alternative is, say, a bunch of Diane Warren songs and magic rainbows.

• hollygo9

Well, I’m a total fangirl so not only will I be buying his CD sound unheard, I’d love love love it if he’d fulfill Lionel Ritchie’s request to release a full version of Hello. Maybe with Always Be My Baby, too? Something to feed the fever between now and then?

• Haunt

Yeah, alright. You guys got me. I knew what y’all meant, but I just couldn’t resist pointing out the irony. I think some of this is more about wanting to hear new music rather than being genuinely concerned with him treading water or not progressing (god that word is gonna get real old real fast). Which is all fair, I know.

Personally, I’m really hoping he hasn’t grown… er, I mean progressed TOO much beyond Analog Heart, ’cause I effing LOVE that thing!

• candie

Okay, so I too am a fangirl and not ashamed to say it. My whole family is a fan girl/boy/teen. And I love everything about David Cook. His singing the way he performs, the way he looks so sexy and draws me in with the way he looks at the camera, and the way it makes me remember “things” in my younger years.

Haunt, I passed up the chance when it was very available to get Analog Heart.
I hope I get that chance again. And I love what you said, I have something of a man-crush on him does that count. You know David Cook has gotten to us all! I have a women crush on him, my family would probaly go ewww if they knew that. LOL I love what he has done to me. It’s like something new to look forward to, since I love music and I love handsome men… :-)

• candie

You know I belong to another blog that is totally, I mean totally about David Archuleta. The only reason I keep going there is because every now and then there is a tread about David Cook. However, at that blog people are able to talk to one another and discuss things. You don’t have to sound robotic and only say things that are intelligent and pertain to the topic of the thread. It’s like real people talking and laughing with each other. I think MJ has hurt her blog by not allowing people to be human and laugh and share what they think. We are only allowed to say what is expected of us on this blog.
However, Thank You MJ I will come here to check on David Cook and what he is doing. in the future. I know you will tell us. Thanks…

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love love love it if heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d fulfill Lionel Ritchieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s request to release a full version of Hello. Maybe with Always Be My Baby, too? Something to feed the fever between now and then?

If he’s going to reprise anything, it’d have to be in the vein and feeling of the album. It doesn’t seem like he’ll do things just to do them. I can see him putting together a stronger ABMB since it is HIS arrangement and not tied to twenty other people like “Hello” was. The last thing he needs to revisit that debacle.

I actually like AH a whole bunch. It’s as good as Daughtry’s latest that is for sure and is very radio friendly. The “Edges” need to be trimmed, but it gives it character. I’m one of the few who doesn’t like Optimistic to A Fault for various reasons: too plodding, too formulaic, not hooky enough for radio. What I mean by hook is when you listen to it once…can you sing the chorus back? That’s how you get a best seller. If his new album was going in the more indie direction, I don’t think it would end up on his new album. I envision RCA going for a sound very similar to what he had on AH…a very hooky, poppy album. He can go for artistic cred later. For now, he has to fulfill his obligation as Season 7 American Idol. To do so…he needs to sell BIG.

dulce – Ahhh what. I am just a normal person here wanting to talk about how awesome David Cook is.
You see this is just what I was talking about. You all here are all way too intelligent for me or try to make us think you are and I just want to come here and talk about David Cook. Not the statistics of it all. F**k I don’t have a masters in music. I just know good music and a great artist when I hear one. David Cook is that person.

I don’t have a masters in music either. *waves* Normal person, here! But that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to talk about music instead of how warm David makes me feel inside. I’d find a fansite if that’s all I wanted.

Aaaaaand, I’m WAY looking forward to DC’s album!!!!!! The way it’s being talked about, I can’t imagine it being anything other than utterly amazing. I think it will burn up the charts!!

Somewhat OT, but DC-related.
Just checking out itunes and TOML is #3 in US, #1 in Canada and #2 in Finland, of all places.

Well I am torn about AH and the new cd. I want new songs…DUH, but what I wouldn’t give to hear a fresh well produced version of Makeover. Now songs from his unreleased album have me curious. I have no doubt that the record label already has that album in their hands. WOuld love to hear some new 100% David Cook originals. From the ages of 21 to 25, a persons life changes drastically and I could only imagine what DC wrote about during that time. Whether is happens or not, I just want a great album to listen to.

To hear that DC could be working with Raine has me freakin giddy. Ryan Tedder….no problems with this…..Jesse McCarthy…..not so much (I could be wrong, but that won’t be the first time) Just to throw this out there for all those interns and record label peeps that are reading this (LOL) I want a DC/female duet and I want it NOW. hey here’s an idea…..Kelly Clarkson is on RCA….make it happen. I think DC and Kelly would sound incredible together. How is that for press….two AI winners dueting together…GAH!!!

Spense….Girl…you crack me up. I checked your list and thankfully I couldn’t agree with any of your points. Then again I haven’t cracked the 40 year mark yet so give me time. :) Must not be a fan of DC’s if I’m not a Cougar….dammit!!

Candie- THis is MJ’s blog and she can run it as she chooses. If you want to CHAT….then either use the chat function or stay over at Rickey’s. The great thing about MJ’s is that it is topic specific blog that doesn’t deviate into OTT fangirliness and comments on an idols “HAWTNESS”

I think David Cook should go with all new music. I tried to like Analog Heart,
but I couldn’t get through it. Every song sounded the same.
Teaming with Raine might be a dream for him, but doesn’t sound good
here. His performance of their song was hands down his worst
one. He has alot of decisions to make. Hope he makes the right ones.

• Lera

WOW, Music of the Night was his favorite as well as mine. I liked all his songs but MotN left a long lasting impression on this older lady! I think he is cute but I enjoy music more then a face.

I like his AH CD but I have to agree, don’t add any of those song’s DC. Do some new stuff, because most already have heard AH….we want NEW stuff!

I’m so happy that he stated Music of the Night was his favorite!!!!!!

Can I say it again…..!!!!!!!!!

Music of the Night was my favorite too!

Love it, Love it, Love it!

I guess I’m so happy because I feel validated in my taste and thought process of music.

PS
TY MJ for keeping things on track.

• Thea

New album– would prefer no AH songs too, for all the reasons mentioned above.
I hope he can include some of the stuff from the new unreleased album (would hate for all those certainly amazing songs to go to waste).
Ultimately, I hope DC can find the right balance between following his taste/use his music, and benefiting from the musicians/writers he can work with now. As he said, he’s just 25 and has a lot to learn, but he’s pretty darn good on his own as well….

On a separate note, about the other interview: 3rd thing to get to make him happy is a DOG? are you kidding me? how more PERFECT can he get???

Did you hear his studio version of this song? It was pretty awesome.

• spritely

I flove “Fall Back Into Me.” It seems so “him,” somehow, both personally and musically.

While I’m mostly in the New Stuff camp, I would really like to hear a few of his old songs with better production values, etc. He might even work with other writers to tweak the arrangements of some of them, which would be cool to hear just for the inventiveness of it.

If he put, say, two old ones on the new CD, I’d vote for FBIM and “Call Out.”

• spritely

Original post deleted by me because DC’s choice of a dog has nothing to do with Raine Maida, as far as I know.

• jpfan

I tried to listen to AH but it’s just not my kind of music so I can’t judge it fairly. They could probably throw in one or two covers on the album but AI almost never does that for the first album. Plus they seem to hate sharing $ with anyone, so I doubt they’ll put Hello on the album. This is crunch time for Cook. It’s one thing to have a hit with a classic song and it’s another to turn something completely new into a hit. But Cook is super radio friendly so it’s hard to imagine the label screwing it up too badly.

Just had to laugh at the progression from “I’m not a cougar” to why are are talking about boring music stuff? Cook should announce his engagement to KC and shave his head ala Daughtry. That should separate the music fans from the fan gurls pretty quickly.

• mar_4DC

It’s funny you just mentioned the studio version of Innocent. I just heard it last night and it was incredible. I’m kicking myself for not getting it. Also the studio of Little Sparrow was great, hadn’t heard that before either. I think we all need to have faith that whatever he does on his new album will be good. He hasn’t let us down yet.

• carson

I find it curious, for lack of a better word, that Raine Maida has such a connection to American Idol. He co-write the coronation song for the 2006 Canadian Idol and was involved in Kelly C’s second album…

• wfowfowfo

We’re old parents with 13-year old boys at the wfo house. Hubby was a Pink Floyd fan, I’m more of a Journey gal, and we too bought Thriller on vinyl. That being said; studio-Innocent is our favorite. We’ve also totally enjoyed AH – it makes for great driving. Unfortunately, my sons need a PG-13 version of Creep, I won’t let them have it on their iPods. I also won’t admit to how often I fire it up blasting when they’re out of the house.

Hopefully his new CD will be full of great new music. I would really like it to be new stuff, not re-vamped AH. Now that doesn’t really prevent songs from the new/unreleased CD to show up — but I hope they’re awesome. I really want this guy to be successful.

Unfortuatenly the withdrawals have set in and it’s going to be a long summer.

I need a new hobby.

• jpfan

OT but I still think Cook would have been better off not winning Idol.
A shocking boot at 3 or 4 would have been perfect. That would have fired up the fan base and kept interest at a fever pitch during the period before the album release. Since he won, the Idol machine goes full blast and the fans don’t have much to do. And he has to sing about rainbows.

• AInoob

I must be one of the very few who actually enjoyed Innocent (both the live version and the studio recording) because I hear many people say that it one of his worst performances. So for that, I’m happy he gets to sing with one of his personal idols and since I liked the sound, I’m hopeful for something really good from that collaboration.

I didn’t realize that Lionel Ritchie said he’d like to hear a full recording of Hello. In one of the interviews last week (WAY too many of them for me to pinpoint which one!) apparently Mariah Carey has stated she would like him to record ABMB. How cool, it must be gratifying to a singer when the song you cover gets that kind of reception from the original artists. That being said, I hope he includes neither on his CD, I’d like all the songs to be his (but if he had to do a cover, can I kindly request “Creep”? lol). I wouldn’t be opposed to one or two of his AH songs (even though I have them all already) but I would prefer all new tracks.

• Trina

I don’t agree. Daughtry till this day remains the exception in terms of being a shock boot and being a huge success. There’s no guarantee going out in 3rd or 4th place would have done the same thing for Cookie. I would much rather see him as the winner and get full support from TPTB.

Since he won, the Idol machine goes full blast and the fans donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have much to do

The fans have to spend money and support him no matter how much the Idol machine does for him.

• http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Since he won, the Idol machine goes full blast and the fans donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have much to do. And he has to sing about rainbows.

Hm. I’d say the Idol machine went full-blast for Daughtry, winner or not…

Anyway, the topic of this post is not Daughtry, or whether David Cook is better off winning or not.

Please don’t post just to stir up the pot.

• GwendolynD

This show’s like high school. Whether you’re the valedictorian or ranked last in your class doesn’t matter. It’s what you do afterwards that makes all the difference. So, this is one album I’m actually looking forward to…with little or no apprehension. I’m trying to worry…but I can’t.

• Jolene

OT but I still think Cook would have been better off not winning Idol.
A shocking boot at 3 or 4 would have been perfect. That would have fired up the fan base and kept interest at a fever pitch during the period before the album release. Since he won, the Idol machine goes full blast and the fans donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have much to do. And he has to sing about rainbows.

I cannot for the life of me see that logic. The fact that DC has the Idol machine fully behind him is the best possible thing for his fans – note the official myspace, the site that’s in the works, the fact that we already get to hear speculation about collaborations… DCs fans are getting plenty, all things considered. I don’t think the fire for him died down at all, and I don’t think it’s going to. It seems to me that TPTB know exactly how lucky they are to have him as their winner, and would feed the fans with just enough to keep everyone interested until the tour starts or the first single comes along.
If he would have been voted off earlier, that definitely would have fired up the fan base, but I don’t think the current situation lacks any fire, nor do I see the upside of having angry, infuriated fans. Will that really make them buy more records? I don’t believe for a second that anyone but rabid few would need that kind of motivation. This isn’t power-voting, it’s album buying.

And the “sing about rainbows”? well, it’s part of the deal, and this too shall pass. It’s better than having no song at all out there, and at this point, most of his fans actually learned to love the stupid rainbow song.

• Pam

Honestly, and I’m only speaking for myself, I’m not going worry about the CD until I hear it because once it is finished, there is nothing I can do about the finished product because worrying isn’t going to change anything. I look at it this way, if Cookie can make “magic rainbows” sound good, then I think he could do ok with just about anything that is thrown at him. No, I’m not found of Jesse McCartney at all being involved with this project, but if his involvement with the album doesn’t hurt the integrity of it and David along with RCA are pleased with the outcome then I will be too.

• jpfan

Oops. Wasn’t trying to stir the pot. It’s just that voting on the show gives the fans “ownership” in a weird way. The ones that don’t win just end up “needing” the fans more. But winning does make the wait for the album a lot shorter and more pleasurable.

But I’m sticking with a good outcome for the album. Unlike Bo, this is one Idol rock album it’ll be very hard to screw up. I still hate the coronation singles and wish they’d stop doing them. ;)

I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t realize that Lionel Ritchie said heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d like to hear a full recording of Hello. In one of the interviews last week (WAY too many of them for me to pinpoint which one!) apparently Mariah Carey has stated she would like him to record ABMB.

Wow, really? Can I read the source for that?? What if Mariah Carey record a whole album for Cook?? That would be a whole track of songs making a hit like ABMB!!!!

AInoob, I LOVED “Innocent”. In fact it’s currently got the top spot on my 25 Most Played list on my iPod.

I love the studio version of Innocent. It’s one of my top faves too.

I also LOVED “Innocent.” I thought he was off in the live version, but the studio version got such rave reviews that I bought it. Wow. As Simon would say, I think it would be on the charts today. It’s perfect. If he does songs like that on his debut, watch out.

I was a bit upset by something DC said about “Analog Heart”. He said he was going to “submit” a couple of those songs for inclusion on his new record. It is sad that they appear to be taking his artistic freedom away from him. I know, he is getting paid to do the record and the Producers want to make money too, but it just seems like they will interfere too much and the album will be way too sterile. I hope I am wrong.

Because of shortening of songs, DC started out in a strange place in the song and it started then a little strange. He did blow away the chorus. Simon was just stupid in his comments centered on the jacket (sorry!)

I didn’t read ALL the comments here before posting but here goes… I really liked Innocent too! Especially the studio version. I did not know that song or OLP and I loved David’s song choice for IGB week and I loved his performance. But then, I love David hahaha! ANYWAY, I am not surprised by anything that has come out about the making of his album. He’s under contract now, working with a record label and other writers and such. Come on. AND I am NOT surprised in the least that he wants this NEW album to be a progression. Are we surprised at that from him? Again – come on, folks. I will buy his album. I would buy Analog Heart in hard copy if it were reissued, even though I got the download (thank goodness!). He’s gotta do what comes next, not go backwards. And look at the OPPORTUNITY he’s got to do what comes next! I can’t wait to hear it. Love you, David Cook!

• Haunt

I’m trying to let it go, but I’m just the tiniest bit frustrated by the constant “he can’t go backwards” talk. I don’t think it’s even remotely unique for an artist that has struggled for years to get their foot in the door to be excited about bringing some of their favorite “old” material with them once they finally break through. David could very well feel that one or two (or more) of the songs he’s written in the past are still worth attention, and for all of us obsessed fans that managed to snag downloaded copies of AH before it disappeared we hardly constitute a wide market. If David wants to give a few of his older songs a chance to reach a larger audience than that doesn’t necessarily equal taking a step backwards. He shouldn’t be forced to ignore everything he’s ever written in the past just because he has a shiny new recording contract. Old songs and new contract do not have to be mutually exclusive.

• AInoob

Mackie, I tracked it down. Michael Slezak mentioned that Mariah would like Cook to record ABMB here, at about the 3:00 point.

• kathrynTX

Hi Haunt. Well yes, I agree. I just wasn’t surprised that he wants to do some new material on this upcoming album. He DID submit some of the songs from AH for the new album, after all. Whatever he wants to do, I’m excited about it! I’d like to hear whatever he wants us to hear on this new album. I certainly hope he’s not “…forced to ignore everything he’s ever written…” before AI. Everything he’s done has made him who he is now. I can definitely hear changes, starting with Axium material through AH to Idol performances. Yeah, I didn’t mean to say he CAN’T “go backwards.” He can do what he wants to do, which is what I’d expect from him. I sure hope that if he wants to put some of his own material, which he wrote before AI, on his new album, it will be on there. Also, note for some others on here, it seems that I read that DAVID is the one who pulled, or THOUGHT he pulled, AH from all websites. He was surprised when it popped up on Amazon and there was some confusion about taking it down, til they finally complied with his request.

If he wants to take songs from Analog Heart or the unreleased album and redo them for the new album, I have no doubt they will be different from the way they appeared before. To me, that’s still going forward, since he can remake the songs with all the lessons he’s learned on Idol. That’s IF he decides to use those songs.

As far as “submitting” stuff for the new album goes, I am guessing they will put together all the material they’re considering, including Diane Warren’s entry (if she sends one) and Jesse McCartney’s and Raine Maida’s and whatever old songs David is sticking in there, and then (maybe by committee, with all the various interested parties together, including David as the deciding vote, of course) decide what fits together best and showcases what he wants to showcase as well as what 19R and Clive Davis (or whoever is producing him) think would sell best and make an impact on the radio and in stores. It may not be the best choice for creative freedom, but he’s already done it the solo way. Now he’s got all this “talent” working with him to make his album something bigger and more popular, so he might as well use the weapons at his disposal.

I don’t care what he does on the new CD, old, new, just know I will buy it.

I have Analog Heart. I think it is very good, there are some songs on there he could do his cookie “thing” to, he has written since then, I just want to hear more.

I have already rejected the cougar nonsense on ‘nother thread so I am not going there again.

Innocent is one of my absolute favorites!!!

If I learned anything about Cookie through this whole experience– it is to expect the unexpected. I looked forward every week to being blown away by his song choices and arrangements.

The same goes for the new album. I expect the unexpected.

It does not get much better than that.

Add me to the list on Innocent. It is one of my favorites of the season. Then again I am an OLP fan. As for the upcoming album, I’ll be buying it regardless of what is on it. In fact I have already pre-ordered it on amazon =)

If he uses songs from Analog Heart that is fine with me. I would imagine he will be submitting songs from the album he was working on prior to Idol as well. What ever the man wants to do is fine with me. He made the Skittle Song work – I got no fears =)

I wonder how many people Raine has written songs for .. I know from this clip it’s Kelly Clarkson, Pink, and.. well, watch..

I just wanted to say that I loved DC form the start… I looked forward to heaing what song he would do next.. and never knew he was a fan of OLP til he did innosant.. so it was a nice suprise for me, being a OLP and Raine Maida fan. Especailly hearing a Canadian artist on an American show! (BTW I am Canadian) Raine is a great person, and a great musician… He has inspired me in so many ways, so I hope Raine colaborates with David.

Oh.. and for artist Raine has written for… Him & his wife (Chantal Kreviazuk) have written for a few artists.. one i dont see mentioned (maybe cause it was Chantal) was Gwen Stefani.. Raine is also writing and producing for some indy artists… Billy the Kid being one ( She opened for him on his last Canadian solo tour)

I would LOVE to see David on the road with OLP across Canada… that would be one show i would HAVE to see
