David Cook To Perform “The Last Song I’ll Write For You” on American Idol May 10

David Cook will debut a brand new song when he performs on American Idol May 10 called “The Last Song I’ll Write For You”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The tune will be available on iTunes on the same day as the performance.  David’s most recent album, This Loud Morning, was released in June 2011.

Yes!!!! Great to hear that new music is being released.

“The Last Song I’ll Write for You” (David Cook / Daniel James / Andy Skib)

    I’ll definitely be watching.

Awesome!  Can’t wait to hear it!  Thanks mj!

Holy Crepes Suzette. Finally, the title –  and there’s a week to go. Between that sound wave picture from Fields and a R&R specialist house doing the master – IDK what to expect…but the truth is – I’m ready to buy it.

  • Anonymous

Well, hell yeah, something happy for me for the next two Idol weeks, which should prove to be two of the most stressful weeks of recent vintage for me IRL. David Cook May 10, Adam Lambert May 17. Thank you Idol gods. :-)

  • http://twitter.com/newbornstarr Wally.

what is this for? a rerelease??

  • Trina

YAY!!!! I’m so happy we’re getting new music! The style of the cover reminds me of a combo of the Light On and the TOML single covers.

Carrie tonight, then Cookie, then Adam. Thank you Idol Gods for this fab May!

Is is stupid for me to wonder if the song title is a message to the record label? Like this is his last chance before they part ways. Basically: either this song becomes a hit and we quickly push another album, or it flops and we drop DC from the label.

I realize how much I’m reading into a simple song title. Just a thought…

  • Garnetstar

Really excited to hear it. Although I will say its odd the song is not attached to a CD or EP. Were is RCA in all of this? Will this get a radio adds date? Or should I just shut it and enjoy the music? Yeah. ;)

ETA: lol Nick I had a similar thought, but I hoped it was more of a kiss off to RCA. Like see ya.

  • Nele621

So, Cook doesn’t have an EP or full album coming out? This is just a single, period.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WGXNZEYZ6COJ6STWNCPRKEAJLY Ana

It can be for the label, the manager, the who knows who… as long it’s not a message for me and he’ll write more songs.

Curious to hear it. Do we know who are the writers?

  • Anonymous

Writers:  David Cook, Daniel James, Andy Skib

  • Anonymous

He’s been talking about the writing he’s done for his next album, so it’s in the works.

  • Anonymous

Sounds like a good one – I like the title, and of course Edward Bear’s “Last Song I’ll Ever Write For You” (pretty!) is running through my head now. Not that I think  Cook’s will be anything like that but I am looking forward to hearing it. Really like David’s voice. Carrie tonight and David next week and wonder if Aerosmith will also perform on the 17th.

  • Anonymous

Really looking forward to this song – love the cover pic.

David likes the word “last” doesn’t he? I heard The Last Goodbye this afternoon in the grocery store!  :-)  Looking forward to hearing the new song. Full band?

  • Anonymous

Interesting title. The cover art is absolutely gorgeous! Can’t wait to hear it next week!

  • http://twitter.com/deborahsmoot Deborah Smoot

Ummmm….remember “someone” singing (and she wrote it) a song called “Not Gonna Write You Another Love Song” or something like that?  Because she didn’t want to write something just because the label TOLD her to write it?  Did everyone “READ” into THAT?  Whatever, people.  David is an EXTREMELY talented songwriter/musician/singer and I will support ANYTHING he does, regardless of WHAT label it IS or ISN’T on.  He deserves much more … he’s the real deal, not synthesized, autotuned or fake and he doesn’t use (nor does he need) gimmicks.  I am DELIGHTED he will be doing a new song on Idol, and it will be the FIRST and ONLY Idol I will be watching this season … Enough said.  Period, end of story.  Thank you.

the title is rather dark. Looking forward to hear it! Great art cover. David looks so good on that

I guess the “Last Song I’ll Write for You” is part II of the “The Last Goodbye.”

To the label? Like this his last chance? “We” drop DC from the label”?

     I’m confused about your comments.

My take? Maybe it’s Cookie saying to the label – BITE ME.

    Good for him.

And damn. DC has the best male lips I’ve ever seen. Just sayin’

  • http://twitter.com/EitWat MADEitTO20nowWAT

He’s so unattractive. Haven’t heard the song yet.

  • Anonymous

I can’t wait! And I love the title! I wasn’t really crazy about his last album, so it’s great to hear that he is working on new material already. He still has one of my favorite voices.

  • CircadianDomination

Really excited to hear it. I doubt it will be much like TLG, except maybe the lyrics will be similar. But, as for sending a message to the label – who knows.

” He’s been talking about the writing he’s done for his next album, “

Yeah, wordnerdarchie, since January 9th , we’ve been getting all sorts of crumbs on Twitter. This may have been written in the past few months, but when it was decided to be the song for Idol, things moved quickly. The “back in the saddle” tweet of April 19th that included John Fields and Dorian Crozier were the first clue to the producer for this track –  the consensus was, this was a one-stop shop to get the New Song ready for Idol.

And then Euphonic Masters – The Home of Rock N Roll – tweets these

    >>Cutting the new David Cook single, produced and mixed by the uber-talented John Fields @strawberrius

    >>New @thedavidcook single, John Fields @strawberrius killed this mix! #dynamicsrule http://pic.twitter.com/IIHx7LpA

The tweet with the sound wave image showed obvious dynamics, and really opened up discussion – til now, when the title entered the mix. Heh.

David said once, (pre TLM)  that most of his songs were about “That Girl” – esp AH, however he meant that – but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s still the touchstone.

    IMO. Of Course.

Guess you’re entitled to your opinion, but so am I.  The cover art is absolutely beautiful.  David is the real deal.  No gimmicks, no fake autotune, no circus act.  A man and his music, which is what it should be.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

I think he looks pretty damn good, and having seen him in person a number of times, he *really* looks like that. No artifice there at all.

  • Anonymous

I am so excited to hear the new single! David just has that voice that gets to me every time!
As far as his looks? Yes everyone has their own opinion, but I could never look at that cover art and say he was anything but FINE!!

  • iani

Because I know nothing more than the song-title, that sounds like “the last message” from him to his fans/listeners and that picture with those sad, dreamy eyes, I have no words to say anything now, but some uneasy feeling and a kind of heaviness in my chest. Hopefully soon there will be more additional informations about the song title and his future music-career, sigh.

I like the title of the song and the picture is gorgeous. What a beautiful man. I can’t wait to hear it. I loved the song we got over the weekend, From Here to Zero.

  • shaman88 shaman

I guess he’s saying it’s the last song about the girl from Analog Heart. He’s completely over her. He’s in love with a new girl in ‘From Here to Zero’. #asstalking

  • Incipit

“that sounds like “the last message” “

IDK, Iani – another last message? Did you have the same reaction to the title of “The Last Goodbye”? – Sounds more like territory revisited to me – from Axium’s “Unlucky” – “here’s the last words I’ll write for you …”

Songwriters often revisit themes until they feel they got them right. – and neither of those songs were to the fans or listeners, for sure.

But I’m sorry for your ‘heavy feeling’ – although, all you may need to disperse it is to listen to this confident, happy guy, presenting us with a new song (FHTZ)  and talking about the future at the Underground Lounge in Vegas.

    Can’t hurt, anyway.

  • Anonymous

Ohhhhh! I like that theory. One door closing, another opening.

Love the photo. And not gonna lie, I hope it’s a barnburner, but I’ll take whatever I get. Happy Fan. :)

  • Anonymous

Well, we know Dave likes his songs to have multiple meanings so we’re already on the right track with all these ideas – the ‘you’ could be a former girlfriend, his brother, his label, even his fans.  Spin the wheel and take your pick.  So we now know the title and that it is full of ‘dynamics’.  I wonder if any version will leak before the performance?  It sure is a relatively quiet release which does serve to stoke the theories.  Why take the time to record a single and perform it on Idol if they’re not going to promote it or just give it a light treatment?  Very odd.

  • http://twitter.com/deborahsmoot Deborah Smoot

And the thing about the cover art is this:  NOTHING fake about him…and he is GORGEOUS.  Perfect actually … feature by feature.  And yes, the BEST male lips I have ever seen, too.  (Sorry hubby, love ya lots, but David’s lips … uh-huh!  LOL!)

  • http://twitter.com/deborahsmoot Deborah Smoot

    Huh?

He looks good in that picture, he’s got such a handsome face, but gotta be honest I’m glad it cuts off at the hairline lol.

Looking forward to the new song, I hope its really good and hopefully different from the sound of TLM. Also hope he’s chill when he performs it.

I am not a huge David Cook fan but after Adam Lambert gave him props on the show I went back and checked him out. My husband likes him more than I do but I have to admit we saw him sing live with Adam in NYC in Central Park and the boy can sing. I also love his personality. He seems genuinely sweet, intelligent, and secure in his own skin. He had an impish grin and joked around with Adam on stage and he was quite endearing. After the awkward Joshua Phillip nonsense on Idol the other night I actually thought of David Cook and how comfortable he was in his own skin and thought I wish we had more David Cook’s in the world. I am happy to see him returning to Idol and I wish him nothing but huge success and happiness. I would love to see David and Adam do something in the future they really did appear to have great fun and great chemistry on stage. Make it happen Cook and Lambert! I will pay good money to see that.

  • Garnetstar

Hmm…after thinking about it a bit I have to wonder if Cook has left RCA. Not saying he was dropped, but RCA has been silent on the Cook front. No postings about his event at Tiger Jam on his own website or twitter. And now no press release about this song or even a retweet by RCA about the song. Isn’t that odd? Either David’s gone rouge and is releasing a single on his own, (is that even possible on a major label) or he’s no longer with RCA. Has RCA changed their MO and are letting David release a song co-written by Andy Skib & their friend Daniel James (basically nobodies to the music industry) and not tied to a CD or EP? Am I reaching? What am I missing that someone who understands labels would know about?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IKAPTNAJ2NDD2P5QWGFWGEY6ME Mary

I am looking forward to new the new song and more new music from David. I love the single cover, very sexy.

  • Listening

Oh man i’m so nervous about this new song. The Last Song I’ll Write For You sounds soooo stupid. Also it makes me think of The Last Goodbye  b/c the last song you write for someone makes me think goodbye note. This association i’ve created just seems like a bad premonition b/c The Last Goodbye never took off so I don’t want any connection between the songs.

I know i’m usually paranoid and pessimistic I got to beat that down and just wait and see what happens, maybe i’ll totally love the song. Yeah I gotta keep repeating that to myself. I just gotta wait 7 more days.

Jordin Sparks sang a new song ” I am Woman” on idol last year and released it as a single without any EP or CD tied.

RCA was just promoting the acoustic This Quiet Night being released in April . . . and his official website even has his upcoming ABC2 charity concerts/events on there.  I don’t understand the handwringing

  • Incipit

“No postings about his event at Tiger Jam on his own website or twitter. “

Garnetstar, I’m not on Twitter – so IDK what RCA or Sony have been tweeting. Someone will. But I can assure you, The Tiger Jam at Mandelay Bay was listed in the Events Calender on David’s Official RCA Website, and there is a 200 post thread for Tiger Jam in the Forums that covers the event, containing pictures, videos, recaps and tweets from people who were there. Great source for every video that was taken! The WebNerds are always slow with updating the front page news – it’s annoying, but that is stuck at April 10th; they catch up, eventually.

Also – No, your ‘rogue’ scenario is not possible on a major label.

And someone already posted how RCA did this with Jordin Sparks – if that’s what’s going on, it’s called a Buzz Single.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

He’s not going rouge. In fact, he looks pretty gray in that photo.

  • Garnetstar

Buzz Single. Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate it.

Heh, Listening, I’m not laughing at you, but I’m thinking you must have ‘loved’ the video for “The Last Goodbye”, where everyone in it jumped to your same conclusion about the goodbye note – and David pokes a little at that whole idea in that video, especially with the humorous ending; he knows people assign their own meanings to his songs.

Hang in there with your mantra, 7 more days, and you can just regard it as a song, like FHTZ is a song, not a prophecy. KWIM?

  • Listening

Incipit you’re right I did like that vid I thought it was cute and funny.

I gotta stay positive. Hmmm when I first read the title of David’s other new song From Here to Zero. I wasn’t to sure of that title either but it turn out fine b/c I loved the lyrics and the vocals. So I guess the same thing could happen for The Last Song I’ll Write for You even though it sounds a whole lot stupider…… Arrrgh it’s so hard to stay positive though, i’m like how can he say that w/out it sounding dumb? I just don’t see it. Man I wish he’d just sing From Here to Zero. I KNOW that’s good.

  • Anonymous

This is an important performance for David – getting concerned with how AI is staging people.  Wasn’t wild, to say the least, about Kris with the whirling piano and now Carrie with the white tornado.   With David hope they just keep it simpler and effective with the emphasis on him and the music.   These intrusive surrounding screens – with giant faces, umbrellas, waving wheat, falling snow – are just not appropriate in his case.

  • Anonymous

I just want him to sing with confidence and energy.  His last AI performances have been lackluster.

  • Karen C

I can’t wait to hear the new single !! Especially since Andy cowrote it, and I love his music too..

  • boooo yahhh

  • Anonymous

i’m like how can he say that w/out it sounding dumb?

I would imagine, if you took a poll of casual music listeners about which is the better lyric, you’d get a whole lot more people saying “From Here to Zero? WTF is that about? That could be really stupid.” than the reverse.

I’m not saying anything against FHTZ, just that what a title sounds like relative to how it is used isn’t always the expected outcome.

On that note, we don’t know that it will be a chorus lyric.  REM wasn’t. Circadian wasn’t used at all in the lyrics of that song.

And from everything we’ve heard (the sound guys being excited about the mix and the dynamics), this sounds like a much bigger song to attract attention on the AI stage.  Which, FHTZ, for all its prettiness, would not be, IMO.

I’m just not worried about it.  Either it will fly or it won’t.  All I can do is give it a fair listen and buy it if I like it.

  • Incipit

“I’m just not worried about it.  Either it will fly or it won’t.”

Yeah, worrying about it doesn’t change anything – it’s like splitting votes – *snerk*, a waste of time.  Otherwise I would be concerned about the infamous unevenness in the sound delivery system on the Idol stage – or the imbalances between the East Coast and West Coast feeds – either of which can raise their ugly heads, and neither of which every Season’s upgrade ‘ever’ seems to address.

Or be really concerned with this new fascination with xfactorish production values that has resulted in Bird Cages, Spinning platforms, and Tornados? (Those were just the ones I saw)  – or “giant faces, umbrellas, waving wheat, falling snow..”because, that can be scary stuff.

I can hope Idol literally keeps their Literalism to themselves with their new toys – and the sound system is having a good night – Heh – but it does no good to worry about any of it.

My favourite performer, songwriter and singer of all time.  I think he is fantastic and very attractive too.   His voice is magnetic and he draws you in.  I have his cds playing permanently in my car.   He is obviously in another place now seeing as he had a whole portfolio of music ready from his previous album, but still went and wrote these new ones and I have faith in David to choose the right song.

  • Anonymous

David looks mature and distinguished in this pic. I’ll hold off judgment on the new song until I hear it. Hopefully it’s of the type that grabs you at the first listen. :-)

  • Anonymous

Having the same line of thought as yours. My guess is at this point RCA is now at a loss as to how on earth to reinvigorate David’s appeal to the masses and has now curtailed any micro-management of his recording activities. I think right now, RCA no longer cares what, when, and how David releases music in the market, just as long as the music is a hit. If it’s not, I have a feeling there could be the inevitable parting of ways. OF COURSE I HOPE I’M WRONG. :-(

  • http://twitter.com/thePeachMango Peach Mango

Is it a cover of Edward Bear’s song It’s the Last Song I’ll ever write for you….one hit wonder from 1972?

  • Incipit

No, difah, it’s not a cover – there’s just a similarity in titles. David wrote the song this year, with Andy Skib and Daniel James.

He sounded pretty stoked to play it for us on Idol – lots of teasing about it at the Night of Hope Concert last night.

  • Anonymous

I tried to reply but could not get a cursor in the reply box. SIGH. Also could not sign in said you did not recognize this email.

  • Anonymous

On further googling I figured out that it is a one word difference from the 1972 song titled It’s the Last Song I’ll EVER Write for You, vs It’s the Last Song I’ll Write For You.

  • Incipit

difah, I see you fixed the problem – but a thought, if it happens again – are you logging in with WordPress? The link for that is in the right hand column, right under the Posting Guidelines. Ought to fix the cursor in the message box and the recognition problem.

Yes, the titles aren’t ‘quite’ the same – and the funny thing is – the title doesn’t even have to be in the lyrics, necessarily…like REM and “Circadian” are not. But David had some remarks about that title at the NoH – funny stuff.

  • Anonymous

Can’t find my original message, I wanted to remember what you wrote to me in reply, what is NOH, can you tell us what he said?

  • Incipit

difah, NoH is the Night of Hope Concert that was held in DC on Saturday night – a charity fund raiser for the Race for Hope on Sunday, and David did nine songs acoustically, with a story for each one.

The remarks were in the banter around the stories. mj has a thread up for it on the front page – go HERE – there’s a link for the whole cellcast, I would have to listen back to recall exactly where the plug for Idol and the new song comes in. I think it was before the story for FHTZ, the other new song.

Basically, he poked some fun at the title – said no, he’s not retiring, and that he didn’t know how to do anything else…well, he could juggle a little.  It’s funny. Lotta good stuff on that thread, check it out?

  • Made Laca

  • Incipit

Just trying to figure out how to get a snippet on endless loop, Made laca.  *snerk* @ Myself.

The chorus stops so abruptly, just when it’s getting good. Snippets are so bad for me. Heh. But I have no willpower, obviously. Can.Not.Wait to hear the rest of this! Is it Thursday yet?

And Idol best not screw up the sound. (Practicing wicked epithets)

*This* is what David was talking about at the NoH – “…the new stuff is kinda taking a different direction, and I know, I know that sounds like a very generic statement. And I firmly believe it purely because I’m getting, I’m getting out to write more with ah, with familiar people, I’m not walking into a room with a stranger [Audience cheers] and saying “Hi, My name is Dave, let me metaphorically take my pants off and let’s write a song.” Metaphorically, calm down.” NoH Transcript

  • Made Laca

I was thinking the same, Incipit! How to loop a snippet? Great minds… LOL
That’s exactly what David was talking about at the NoH. How different it must be to write with people who’ve been your friends for ages vs writing with strangers!!! I think this is the most pure “David Cook” song we’ve heard in a while maybe except for GTTG. Can’t wait to listen to the whole song *jumps up and down*

MJ just opened a thread about the snippet here http://mjsbigblog.staging.wpengine.com/david-cook-the-last-song-ill-write-for-you-preview-snippet.htm
