I just got a press release announcing David Cook’s appearance on FOX’s New Years Eve Live show. The show is set to take place at the Mirage in Las Vegas on New Years Eve:

AMERICAN IDOL Season Seven winner David Cook and Grammy Award-winning musician Scott Weiland are set to perform at The Mirage in Las Vegas on NEW YEARà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢S EVE LIVE airing Wednesday, Dec. 31 (11:00 PM-12:30 AM ET live; CT/MT/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

This year, NEW YEARà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢S EVE LIVE goes coast-to-coast with hosts Spike Feresten of TALKSHOW WITH SPIKE FERESTEN and Mark Thompson of HOLE IN THE WALL when they report live from the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip. Feresten and Thompson will count down to 2009 with celebrity guests and performances by some of the yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hottest musical artists. As 2008 comes to a close, the annual celebration will move to New York City to ring in the new year as the world-famous New Yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Eve Ball makes its descent into Times Square. Additional musical guests and artists scheduled to appear to be announced.

Not a giant bulletin–FOX’s New Years Eve special typically features an Idol or two.

However, this totally caught my attention:

Shortly after midnight, world-renowned daredevil Robbie Knievel will attempt a death-defying 200-foot jump over the recently renovated Mirage Volcano. Knievelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s New Yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Eve jump marks the 41st anniversary of his father Evel Knievelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s bone-shattering jump at Caesars Palace.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How better to draw the worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s attention to the new Mirage and our fiery main attraction then with a spectacular stunt on one of the hottest nights of the year?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Scott Sibella, President and COO of The Mirage. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Having Robbie jump our new Volcano on New Yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Eve will provide the perfect cap to our multi-million dollar transformation.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Seriously?!!?!

Thank you for sharing this MJ. I know I heard Cook say in an interview that he requested a couple of weeks off during the holiday, so I wonder what happened?

All in all I’m happy that he is performing at this event on New Years.

This certainly is outstanding news, thank you for posting this.

    Crazy Knievel.

  • Jolene

Wait, so last year both Jordin and Blake performed in this event, but the year before only Daughtry did it? I guess they really did always see him as the winner and Taylor as… well, not.

I thought he was talking about Christmas, which as far as I know he does have off. I guess New Year’s wasn’t included.
Does anyone remember when exactly in January David is going off to the Middle East ?

Maybe New Years is the end of his two weeks, or perhaps the performances will be pre-taped? I know some of the performances for the Dick Clark New Years Rockin’ Eve are always pre-taped, so that could be the case here as well.

I remember speculating the year Daughtry performed that this gig might have had something to do with being managed by 19 since there are ties between them and Fox. Jordin and Blake who were also with 19M this time last year makes me think it’s a real possibility.

When he mentioned requesting the time off I thought more than anything he wanted to make sure he could spend Christmas with his family. Something like this, especially in Vegas I can see him having fun.

    Makes sense, Trina. Thanks!

It seems in the past years these have been in New York. I remember Blake, Jordin, Carrie and Daughtry singing in the middle of the humongous crowd at Times Square. Is this the same show?

  • YankeeFan08

As much as Cook needs time off, this event is huge exposure for him. Millions of people will be watching Fox on New Year’s Eve.

  • SashaB

LOL MJ. The apple drop in Time Square is kind of lame, because I want crazy crazy fireworks, etc. I am actually thinking that Robbie Knievel’s stunt might make the west coast celebration and the Vegas feeds a major draw for the audience. Cheestastic. Thanks for the breaking news, as always.

Jolene: “Does anyone remember when exactly in January David is going off to the Middle East?”

Let me find the link for David’s Middle East tour to confirm the date, and I’ll post it here if someone doesn’t find it sooner than I can get it posted.

Oh sorry…nevermind my stupid question above. I see the description that MJ posted says that this year it is going Coast to Coast instead of just being at Times Square. Duh!

  • Jolene

    Thank you, lovegoodmusic!

    19 – 26 Jan 09

So, a week at the end of January. I wonder what the rest of the January schedule will look like. I’d imagine the label will wait with a 2nd single until after he gets back, but maybe I’m wrong on that.

  • lovegoodmusic

    Jolene: Your welcome!

I hate to say this, but I am a bit worried about David doing the Middle East tour.

  • Kirsten

Congrats to Cookie on getting the gig!

    Dec. 31 (11:00 PM-12:30 AM ET live;

So they are going to get the crowds in Las Vegas to cheer in the New Year 3 hours before it happens? LOL. Do parties even get started by 9 pm in Las Vegas? Man, it sucks to live on the West Coast.

Let’s hope Scott is a little more sober than he was at the AMAs and that Robbie makes his jump. Otherwise, this show could feature more than one crash. Cookie may be the only thing holding that show up.

Yeah, me too. I remember vividly when the ABC anchorman Bob Woodruff went over and got a serious head injury. He left the safer areas though, and went out into the country-side. Hopefully David and the band will be better protected.

David’s SNL episode is being rerun on 12/27. Between New Years Eve, SNL, and the Xmas parade, that’s 3 times he’ll be on our TV screens during the last week of the month. Hopefully all of that exposure will keep sales going into January.

David mentioned that he’d negotiated for a couple of weeks off for the holidays. My guess is that his time off starts soon, and goes until a couple of days after Christmas, then he’ll go rehearse for a few days before the NYE show. It seems like musicians pretty much always have to work NYE, at least if they’re popular at all, even regionally.

LOL that’s what I was thinking… How many times will the crowd in LV celebrate the New Year?
If I was in the US I’d tune in to see the jump.

I think Cook said he negotiated the last two weeks of December…

  • smartcookie

I seem to recall that the Vegas thing usually does hoopla for three time zones (skipping Mountain Time). Or maybe it’s just rerun after the first one. Or maybe I’m misremembering. I’m pretty sure Conan is the only one on a major network to *only* celebrate the Central Time Zone’s midnight (with dancing ears of corn and cheese and things).

  • SashaB

I hate tape delayed live shows. Seems stupid. But then I grew up in California. The only live stuff were the four major sports, everything else was taped. Maybe that’s why I became a huge sports fan. Am on the east coast now, so “live” is “live” except when it’s the Olympics or international.

Am glad the Vegas is starting to represent the west coast nationally. Since LA and Seattle didn’t step up, Vegas had to. It also makes sense that artists/celebrities might, personally, want to be in Vegas to ring in the new year. So it might be an easy draw for big names as well as the newbies.

  • smartcookie

Plus it’s a lot closer to LA and a whole lot warmer if you’re in Las Vegas (as opposed to Times Square).

  • Dr. Tracey

Thanks for the info, i’ll tune in to see David for sure.

  • Jane62

Can anyone verify is he actually doing his performance ON NYE? I think it could be pre-taped on a different day and just the coverage of the strip and such is live. See this link – it doesn’t mention David but does mention Scott W. and the title of the show being New Year’s Eve Live.

Any travel incurs risks, and these days, no where or place is really safe from harm/attacks these days. Mumbai. Madrid. NYC. So I’m just going to hope and pray like crazy that DC and anyone other performer who travels over there to entertain our troops be safe. USO trips were still populated with well known stars even during the Vietnam War. I don’t recall ever hearing of a performer getting injured during Vietnam – and those bases were a lot less secure than ours are now in the Iraq and Aghanistan. Again, no guarantees. I understand the potential risks and dangers, and will also be releasing a sigh once he gets back to the US, too.

Regardless of politics and one’s stance on both those wars, I admire DC for wanting to go. That’s awesome. On a more reassuring note, I think DC will fly into an airforce (therefore) secured base, perform on base, not ever leave the protected base when he meets the troops, and then fly out on safely.

LOL, kirsten. yes, it does. but we’re used to having to do stuff on east coast time. sometimes that’s preferable to having to wait until three hours after the east coast sees something, anyway.

thanks for that link, jane62. i live in vegas, so i’m trying to see what i can dig up, because i sure would like to go to this performance.

More chances of having to have what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas.

  • SashaB

Livehead, will you be videotaping DC? That would be awesome. Thanks for all the tubey goodness.

  • oceana

Me three, worried about David going to the mideast. I’ll be glad when he comes safely back home.

I’m really going to miss him when he stops being on tv twice a week.

  • Jane62

Anyone found out any more info about the Vegas gig? Livehead16?

  • http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=livehead16 livehead16

    you’re welcome sashab. :)

as for nye, i still haven’t gotten any information. am working on it. if i can get my camera in there, i will absolutely record it, but i suspect that may be difficult. it depends what type of show it actually is.
