Did he write the last song aftr the last goodbye?

  • Anonymous

    Liked it – bought it.

  • Anonymous

The last Goodbye was written pretty early in the last album cycle, so I’m sure this was written much later.  He wrote it with his band mate Andy Skib and friend Daniel James.

Once again David shows why he won Idol.  Vocals are wonderful and music doesn’t overpower his amazing voice.  Glad he’s not going the dance pop route.  That’s just not him and that’s fine with me.

  • http://twitter.com/xdarkcupidx Brittney

Just bought it! Haven’t listened to it yet though.

  • Anonymous

I downloaded this immediately after it was available.  The intro caught my attention right away.  I’m loving the guitar work, and it’s always nice to hear David’s falsetto.  And the ending… love Dave’s lower register.  I’m really liking what I’m hearing on this song.

This is such a random release.  But I’m a big Cook fan, so I hope it does well for him.  Is it being released to radio?

  • Anonymous

I absolutely love, love, love this. IMO it’s one of his best songs to date. Love how his vocals are front and center. Love all the nuances in his vocals, and absolutely love the lyrics! I am a happy camper tonight.
Now Idol…make sure the sound mix is good for tomorrow night! Can’t wait to hear it live!!

  • Anonymous

Why is he releasing this dirge and even worse making sure that everyone knows about it by singing it on Idol? Sigh…

  • http://twitter.com/alamodame Alamodame (Tess)

All I can say is this song is infinitely listenable. Beautifully wrought– the lyrics, instrumentation, catchy melody. I will be back to comment with more details, but felt compelled to give this song a shout-out tonight in my excitement: Great writing, David Cook, Andy Skib, and Daniel James. Superb band mates in Skib, Monty Anderson, Devin Bronson. Matchless vocals by Mr. Cook, backup by Andy Skib!

Reminds me of Goodbye to the Girl?

  • Anonymous

Some fans said you should play Goodbye to the Girl, This is the Last Song… and From Here to Zero in a row.  That they fit together.  (I don’t recall the order they had them in, though.)  I haven’t tried it yet.

  • HappyDaisy

BEAUTIFUL, nuanced vocals.  No surprises there.

Poignant lyrics, also somewhat intriguing right now.

Appealing melody.  Type of song to listen to during a drive at night.

A fine work of art.  Thanks David, Andy, and Daniel.

Very excited to see the performance on Idol!

This is nothing like Goodbye to The Girl, in my opinion. GBTTG has an alt vibe, this is a mediocre AC song with predictable lyics and melody. And he needs to move on from the funeral mask pics for the artwork.

this is a mediocre AC song with predictable lyics and melody

Then it should go platinum, since that’s a perfect description of Time Of My Life.

  • Anonymous

Liked the longer snippet so I bought it. On iTunes it’s the same as Amazon, copyright 2012 David Cook. Looked at the other songs and they say copyright 19r and RCA. Maybe MJ was on to something.

I really like the song, should never judge bu an amazon snippet.

  • Anonymous

Love the acoustic version of Goodbye to the Girl on his EP.

  • Anonymous

A lot of David’s fans like this song. What you call Dirge, I call a vocal masterpiece! Lots of happy Cook fans tonight!

  • Karen C

I love the new song, vocally it sounds wonderful and it does sound more current.

I did noticed that the copywrite is still David Cook.  The other thing I noticed is that it is classified as rock on Itunes.  So I do wonder if he is releasing it himself.

I’m wondering if that’s what the Hollywood Reporter Idol Hangover interview is about.

Whatever it is hope it does well.

  • Anonymous

His voice sounds great and the production is better (the chorus is a bit repetitive). Though it’s a more current-David-Cook, I’m not sure if it’s current enough for radio.

I hope he sings it well tomorrow.

OK – I love this song. It’s a Cook single and I love it! What is going on?

Bah to the naysayers – can’t wait to hear it on Idol.

And now I have to go to work…

  • Anonymous

Told you on the other thread that david will give shirley halperin an exclusive on her show IDOL HANGOVER. He’s on for this Friday.

  • Anonymous

Liked the snippet, freaking love the song! Damn snippets. LOL. Excited about tomorrow night.

  • Anonymous

See? All you have to do is give David Cook the reins and you have a great single.
Just like with David’s idol journey, David ALWAYS knows best.

I know, right?  Not used to this.

OK after 3 listens, I really love this. Great melody, voice front and center. This was mixed really well. Can’t wait to see David tomorrow on Idol!

eta: Love, love love that last verse where the music is dying out, and David, yeah………….that.

  • Anonymous

Holy Ryan Tedder drum track! That’s an interesting choice. I wonder how that will sound in live performance.

I love the melody and I love, love, love the vocal. He has such an incredibly expressive voice and that’s definitely on display here. That makes me happy.

Some fans said you should play Goodbye to the Girl, This is the Last
Song… and From Here to Zero in a row.  That they fit together.  (I
don’t recall the order they had them in, though.)  I haven’t tried it
    yet.

Well, logically, I would think From Here to Zero should be first since it’s a love song. The Last Song I’ll Write for You should be next because it has a break up message and Goodbye to the Girl last because it deals with the aftermath of losing someone important to you. Proviso, though, I have not tried it yet. ;-)

  • Garnetstar

Well I’m liking what I’m hearing. Finally we have interesting production that doesn’t overwhelm the vocals. And the melody has been stuck in my head since last night.

  • Anonymous

I’ve just been reminded again why I love this guy so much :)

  • Anonymous

You know me and my love of that lower register heh. So the end of it? Heck yeah. I just listened quickly but I totally love how the vocals are front and center. Since I love his vocals and all. My favoritest song of his ever? Nah, not going to make me break up with Makeover quite yet… But that’s good stuff, and I don’t really care what label he is or isn’t on if I like the good stuff I can get from him.

  • Anonymous

Of course now it’s totally stuck in my head and I want to listen again (this is good!!). That will be my reward for completing all my morning tasks in a timely manner ;)

  • http://twitter.com/teaadaily teaadaily

I love The Last Song I’ll Write for You!  From the very first listen I love this song. It has an Analog Heart sort of flavor to it.  It has a distinct David Cook sound to it. I am listening to it over and over.  I think it would make a great radio single too.  The vocals are to die for.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Audrey-Lefkowitz/691909415 Audrey Lefkowitz

Just listened to the longer snippet and it brings tears to my eyes.  I forgot how David is able to emote and to make his audience feel.   He is superb.  Now I will have to wait until tomorrow night to see him on tv here in Marbella.   Two shows together.   Hopefully I will find him on utube.   God I love his voice.

  • http://twitter.com/poppetawoppet Emily

well this is definitely interesting. I love the musical direction this is taking (and definitely in the GTTG/FHTZ style, which is good.)

Lyrically I’m not sure I’m completely on board, but David can sell a lyric like no other (can anyone say ‘magic rainbow’?)

either way, love love love this song

  • Anonymous

Interesting this is listed as being published/released by David Cook. No mention of RCA. Was he dropped?

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

susielovesgoodmusic, after the lengthy speculation about Cook’s label status in the TLSIWFY snippets thread on Tuesday, I’m hoping Cook will clarify his situation when he’s on Shirley Halperin’s Idol whats-it show on Friday.

As for the song… yeah. Good stuff. Got the complex interplay of instrumentation that we heard in TLM, but with a fresh and different feel, and it’s hella catchy.

Finland fans are great. Check out #1 and #9 in their Rock iTunes listing:

Still loving this this morning. Whew! that last verse gives me chills. I can’t get over how well this was mixed.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

This song is beautiful and song masterfully.  David is so good at emoting and making the listener feel.  Something this years contestants miss IMO.

Hopefully tonight David can show the 3 stoogies that there is more much more to exceptional singing that screeching, yelling, runs etc.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I’m waiting for tonight to hear this if full. :)

  • Anonymous

Come on Tinawina… download the song, it’s only $.99.  You won’t regret it, lol. ;)  It’s currently #11 in iTunes Rock.  You could bump it up to #10. hahaha.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

LOL!!! I will buy it tonight!!!! I’m trying to be unspoiled here!!!!

Lol, stay strong woman! I was going to wait and I caved. Weeeeaaaakkkk. :)

LOL!!! I will buy it tonight!!!! I’m trying to be unspoiled here!!!!

You should listen to it as it was meant to be heard. Lord knows what American Idol’s infamous sound “experts” are going to do to his performance.

  • Anonymous

Haha, well *wink* you wouldn’t HAVE to listen to it yet.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

The single is better than I expected it to be although it’s not to far off from his usual stuff. I purchased it to show my support for him. Good Luck to him on Idol tonight.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Thanks for having my back tierbee! LOL! He will get my dollar, I’m just trying to experience it like a normal person this time.  Ha!

  • 123abc456

This song is great. The intro makes it instantly recognizable. It has a catchy chorus. I love the guitar solo and the lyrics. The song is not overproduced and shows off Dave’s vocals.  :)

    Ok, one goal attained:

    iTunes-Rock
    10. The Last Song I’ll Write for You – David CookThursday, May 10, 2012 11:08 AM

    “iTunes-Rock
    10. The Last Song I’ll Write for You – David Cook “

wordnerdarchie, Cool!! In the Top Ten on iTunes Rock. It was just at #11 twenty minutes ago.  And David hasn’t even performed it yet.

Good Karma for Idol’s infamous sound – there’s gonna be a full band on that stage – get someone who knows how to treat that right, without burying the vocals!

  • iani

I was a big Cook fan during AI7, but this is pretty meh. Nothing new. sounds very Nickelback-ish.

Really? Because I like Nickelback and they sell pretty well with their music . I’m really looking for non hard-core fans comments too  because I can’t buy it now :(. Any more details? So, it has a nice beginning as well the ending, a good guitar riff(could be Devin’s? and it is in the middle or the end of the song?), great vocals; does it have a bridge or it has a new formulistic structure? I feel like I have a big rock in my stomach for the tonight performance, hope everything goes smooth and well, not watching tonight AI.

  • Incipit

” Any more details? So, it has a nice beginning as well the ending, a
good guitar riff(could be Devin’s? and it is in the middle or the end of
the song?), great vocals; does it have a bridge or it has a new
    formulistic structure? “

iani, I’m not too familiar w/Nickleback – not my preferred style – but I don’t hear much relevance there, really, I don’t.

As far as details, since you are waiting to hear – I can offer the opinion of someone who knows music structure and has the language (not me) who says it’s in the same musical territory as the TLM tracks – insofar as there are strings, (does Nickleback use strings?) there is some musical distortion, the instrumental mix is pretty thick, but it’s a ‘progression'; the percussion sounds fresh, there are dynamics between the big moments and the tender ones, and it showcases David’s vocals in a way that was not evident in the prior singles. Also. Falsetto.

The song is written Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Coda. The choices made at the end are very effective.

I’m waiting to hear what Nick does with that drum pattern (which I like) in a performance,  and the bass line is very cool…I’ve always enjoyed the way David uses the rhythm section of his band to have conversations with the guitars. And it doesn’t take much to get that opening riff stuck in the head, But that’s just my impression.

    Does that help?

  • iani

Thank you so much! From the snippets I don’t hear Nickelback, more like a combination of Lifehouse? and Adam Lambert’s? some ballads. But if others hear different, great. For me, from those snippets and FHTZ, it’s definitely something changed in his style. Can’t wait for the song and I will see what my “gut” say, lol. Definitely listening to 30 sec. I was relieved, even though the song doesn’t scream of hit, being in the category of “pretty” you can’t say anything bad of a “pretty” except maybe the old “meh’ that make 80% of the radio-music today and sell well. Man, how can he go to radio though and have a video? Friday maybe we’ll know more from that interview with SH.

  • http://twitter.com/ljrTR LJR

Love it! Dave Cook sounds great. Love him, love his music.  His appearance best be available on the net somewhere later since I have to work tonight – boo.
Hope he and the band have a great night.

  • Anonymous

Wow.  I think some of you folks are really drinking the Kool-Aid.  This song is derivative, formulaic, and hookless.  Cook is an insanely talented vocalist, but he’s totally hit and miss as a songwriter.  This song would have no chance on radio with a major label behind it.  It has less than no chance if he’s trying to push it independently.  If he really is getting dropped by RCA he better come up with some much better material if he wants to so much as stay afloat in the current marketplace.

  • CircadianDomination

I’m not hearing Nickleback in this song at all… It is a pop-rock song with some alt elements (like the awesome guitar intro). But it’s good… Easily his best single so far. Hopefully somehow it’ll be a success.

  • CircadianDomination

Heh, I genuinely like this song, and I haven’t liked a Cook single since Light On.

  • Anonymous

I suppose from your post you like the dance beat drivel that permiates the radio today.  If you do then you will always be “disappointed” in Cook because that is not where he is and has said as much.  I personally think it is very “hooky” and an earworm that I already have memorized and can’t get out of my head.  As long as Cook seems happy then I’m a happy fan.  Will it be a big hit and make him a “superstar” that so many here thinks is necessary to be successful, I don’t know.  I know what I like and that’s not “drinking the kool-aid”.

  • Anonymous

Once again Nickleback is getting a bad rap.  I could only hope that Cook sells like they do.

  • Anonymous

I agree that David is very good at emoting and also that for me at least, maybe this is what is lacking in this group of very talented singers.  At this late point in other seasons, I have a favorite I am passionate about (Cook, Adam, Casey J., Haley) and am voting like crazy.  This year I like them all, but am not in love with anyone.  Anyway, since David is one of my favs, can’t wait for tonight’s show.

  • iani

“Wow.  I think some of you folks are really drinking the Kool-Aid.  This song is derivative, formulaic, and hookless.

Have you listened to it because I didn’t. You deleted though the remarks of Adam and Lifehouse but I go because I’ve made them listening to the snippets. If I hear some nuances, beat, some sounds in from some of their songs, I don’t think they will be seen less talented by people or offended by the DC song “comparison”, I’ve even put “?” marks till I get to buy/hear it. Heck, every song has similar sounds with many others, only the birds are original and have original sounds. And no, I don’t drink dyed-drinks, enough chemicals for me! Cook is aware of his talent and limitations and he’ll manage to do something with them and take some advantage from, not everyone is born to be a star but to work more to get a small ray of it.

  • http://twitter.com/xdarkcupidx Brittney

Love the song! There are very few artists were I like the song on the first listen. David Cook is one of them. :)

  • http://twitter.com/xdarkcupidx Brittney

Just checked it’s #6 on iTunes Rock charts. Also #134 on overall charts.

Wow, @thedavidcook just confirmed: he’s without a record deal. New song is self-released and the road ahead is wide open…

Guess it’s official… the rumors and speculating were true.

Wow.  I think some of you folks are really drinking the Kool-Aid. ”

No we just know what we like.  If that’s “drinking the Kool-aid” then give me a double.
