David Cook Still At the Top of iTunes, and Other Chart News

According to Rickey, who has been keeping track of the Season 7 Idols on the iTunes charts, David Cook’s “Always Be My Baby”, as of 4/20, has been #1 on the iTunes Top 100 4 days in a row.

Also, I posted the Billboard charts on Friday. The chart has its own header tab, check above, or use this handy link. As you can see, the Idol Gives Back performances did very well on the charts this week.

Daughtry’s “What About Now” debuted on the Hot 100 at #18. It helped move his album, Daughtry, from #36 to #15 on the Billboard 200 this week. Jordin Sparks, Jordin Sparks moves to the #17 spot on the Billboard 200, no doubt helped by her appearance with Chris Brown on the Idol Gives Back week results show. “No Air” climbs to #3 on the Hot 100. Not too shabby!

Other Idol IGB performances on the Hot 100 this week: Carrie Underwood, “Praying for Time”, #27, Top 8, “Shout to the Lord”, Annie Lennox, “Many Rivers to Cross”. And, The Top 8, “Don’t Stop the Music” is #23 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles Chart.

“Over the Rainbow” by Brother Iz debuts on the Hot Digital Tracks chart at #20 and re-enters the Hot Digital Songs chart at #11.     I can’t get enough of “Always Be My Baby” and I mean – I love many of the present and past Idols but Cookie is stealing the top spot in my music heart away from Taylor and I NEVER thought that would happen.

    ‘Hello’ got me too. I’d never seen anything that, um, interesting before on Idol. Yep, I hope he wins the whole thing because he deserves to. He’s got my vote, that’s for sure.

    If this has been discussed in the past forgive me…but, do the Idols get paid anything for those sales on Itunes? 1 penney or two even?? Anyone??

    No one seems to know if they get anything from Itunes sales. I do know that Amazon generally pays about .60 per song/6.50 per album for their downloads. Since DC doesn’t have a middle man for Analog Heart he probably isn’t doing to shabby.

    I think that DCook has a great chance to win this whole thing. I don’t vote split, so right now I’m only voting for my favorite (Jason), but once he gets the boot, all of my votes will be going to DCook. (I hate to be pessimistic, but I doubt that Jason will outlast DC.) I think (and hope) that a lot of Jason’s fans are in the same boat, plus, DC obviously has a huge fanbase already.

    Here’s my question about all of this…

    Given Simon’s off-the-wall propensity to praise or damn him randomly, wouldn’t it be best for Cook to be voted off, and then try to preserve the option of being signed elsewhere?

    Can’t you (and Cook himself) see him in an constant battle with the label over the same issues as Kelly Clarkson? Constantly battling over how pop to be, whether to cut songs written for him by this year’s pop-rock ghostwriters?

    I won’t be surprised if his next secret message written on his palm is: “Help! Send Me Home!”

    I’ve been noticing that none of the Idols has made it to the top of Yahoo search this season including Micheal Johns. It’s a way to measure buzz. However, Kristy Cook made it to #1 today. Never underestimate the power of a pretty girl. Doesn’t mean she’ll sell CDs but maybe magazines.

    This was the case for me. before, I would look at David and see only a more pleasant-faced Chris D and then, one night, I was struck by how good-looking he suddenly seemed to me (and no longer Daughtry-ish). I am not quite in Cooktardistan yet, but I may be getting there. ;)

    As I posted in the other threads, in my country, it was a hit by day 1 (#2 on the daily countdown on Thursday) and an even bigger hit by day 2 of that countdown (#1 as of yesterday). The local DJs love it. :)

    I think the Top 24 signed contracts this year that really lock them into the Idol machine whether they win or not. I remember reading about it earlier. If they have faith in Cook, he’ll record the music he wants. Sometimes it works (Daughtry) and sometimes it flops (Blake Lewis).

    Weren’t they joking around two weeks ago about doing “Islands In The Stream” for the tour (with Cookie doing Dolly’s part, LOL)? Maybe they’ll release that as an iTunes recording? I’d totally buy it just to get a laugh, haha.

    The only ones that seem to be the ones to take the title of the “shocking boot” at this point are any of the two Davids. I think Archie’s more in stake of being this year’s real shocking boot, though — his fanbase, in terms of growth, has probably been completely stagnant since the semis, while Cook seems to be picking up new fans left and right with his performances…and transformations. Lol.

    ETA: Btw, MJ, I like the screenshot you have. Cookie’s hands are like…slabs of flesh, or something. It’s funny to look at either way, hah.

    While I am not a huge fan of his, I like him and Idol could certainly do worse than have him win. He has that built-in voice for recording and, to me, far more charisma than, say, Daughtry.

    I think a David-Off for the final 2 might be veeerrrry interesting, indeed.

    i have been assuming that cutting it much shorter and coloring it darker (along with some hair product and a stylist’s touch) made his hair look thicker, but you might be right about that.

    Congrats DC!!! Way to go. This truly is a fantastic accomplishment. I just hope that the Idols are getting something for each download. I have a feeling that DC, if they do get compensation for the downloads, is going to have a nice bonus check coming his way.

    I’m having S5 flashbacks to the Hicks-Yamin fan base overlap, except that CC don’t seem as close as CJ are or Taylor and Elliott were. T-H-E-Y (Taylor-Hicks-Elliott-Yamin) were my favorites, but my votes belonged to Elliott until Taylor’s seemingly inevitable victory. Likewise, my votes belong to Jason and Cookie is the only other contestant I care about.

    It seems like one of the Davids is inevitable, but I’m not sure which. It depends on how the remaining dominoes fall and where Jason fits into that scenario, doesn’t it?

    The rumor spreading across Jason’s fan boards is that he is sick and on antibiotics. :unsure_tb:

    I do think there is some fanbase overlap for CC. A lot of Jason fans I’ve seen have Cookie as their #2 fave and a lot of Cookie fans have Jason as their #2 (that’s the boat I’m in). I don’t know how MUCH of an overlap there is, but it could have an effect at the end.

    At this point I think a lot of it depends on the swing/popular vote and how that goes from week to week.

    The media pounds Cook incessantly over supposed “controversies” that are in reality a whole bunch of nothing. And they can’t even get basic facts straight. That Friedman hit-piece was off the wall.

    I don’t remember it being this bad for anyone else either. The press has passed ridiculous and are headed for absurd.

    Brooke’s album is actually available at Amazon, but though re-sellers. It’s currently out of print. I’m not sure Michael Johns has much control over the selling of his band’s CD. I’m not sure what’s up with Carly.

    These things can be done–selling albums during Idol–but they have to be done carefully. If there was a problem, I’d think TPTB would have pulled it already.
