I believe they do, Trina. I think that soundscan now covers all record sales. I don't have a cite for that, though.

sleepyinsomniac, we've been talking quite a bit about that today on DCO's Chart Thread. Long story short: the five weeks starting after the New Year should be ugly for the entire music industry. They always are, and this year, if anything, could be worse, given how badly the music industry has been doing and what's going on with the economy. So, a record selling around what DC has been selling now that manages to scrape out 100K during those five weeks would be doing very, very well.

That said, DC is making the most of this high-selling time by increasing his sales in December, so while Platinum is extremely unlikely in January or early February, he is at least creating the possibility of it occurring by the end of March. Which would be awesome.

Oh, and the Today show used Magic Rainbow as a montage song. We could be seeing a rebound of the Rainbow, and/or some Rainbow-connected increases in record sales. Man, I love Magic Rainbow. It really does not know the meaning of the word quit.

That's hilarious because a couple of weeks ago I was in Bloomingdales and his CD was on a display near one of the registers. I thought that was a total WTF thing. I wonder if sales from these stores count in Soundscan?

I was shopping at Nordstrom yesterday and what was prominently displayed at the cash register in the Women's Shoe department? None other that Mr. David Cook's cd...only one copy left I might add. Now that's product placement!

These numbers are fantastic. I had thought before that the good numbers for the year end would be in the vicinity of 650-700k, but am I glad to be wrong. Just 85k short of 800. And he'll hopefully be ending the new year with 800k. Are the any projections here or elsewhere of sales and when he'll end up with platinum based on these numbers?

714,500 (give or take, we'll see when the final numbers leak) with one more strong week projected (though not as strong as this one has been). I think he could possibly still bring in around 100k this week (fingers crossed), and if he does, he'll have less than 200k to make up for Platinum in the new year.

AWESOME!

Fabulous! 132K? That's well over 700K with another week of sales for 2008, right? I was estimating 750K by Jan 1, but I may well be too low!

I like that. More of that!

I totally expected David Cook's new album to do well, and he has even exceeded my expectations. RCA doesn't even want to apply for gold certification since they know he'll be going platinum soon, and he would have to wait an extra 5 months if they had applied for the gold certification. His single TOML went platinum in no time, too. I wonder what the #'s are for Light On. I know it's doing well, too, with being one of the top videos of 2008, and all. Cook against Britney, West, Beyonce, all the big hitters. It doesn't seem to phase his numbers any at all...WOW! This guy is already a SUPERSTAR!

I agree, Folk Fan. DC's numbers are nothing short of great, especially in our troubled economy. Top 10 is great, but if he moves 125k units and is ranked 11th, um, yeah, I will not really mind or care. Seriously.

I don't think it would in any way be bad if DC is not in the top 10. I do think that it would be great if he made top 10 again, not only in and of itself, but also because I suspect that we'll be likely to get his numbers faster if he's in the top ten.

The following week's numbers should also be strong for the music market (well, insofar as anything is "strong" in this particular music market) because it will include (1) the last three shopping days before Xmas and (3) the first three shopping days after Xmas, when people are using itunes gift cards and otherwise buying stuff at various sales that they didn't get for Xmas.
