Season 7 American Idol, David Cook is set to appear on an upcoming episode of the ABC TV show, Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. The air date is yet to be determined.

David will be joining Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover team to re-build a house for a Miami, Indiana family suffering from “sick” house. According to this item, the team will be in Indiana today to meet the family:

Today, Ty Pennington and his team travel to Miami County, Ind., to meet the Cowan-Brown family. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will rebuild the home of Andy and Heather Cowan, factory workers who struggle to support their four children Ryan, 16, Trevor, 13, Mason, 8, and daughter Kori, 12, who is battling a congenital blood disease.

David and the team, which includes a local builder and a slew of community volunteers will rebuild the Cowan-Brown home while the family vacations in Disney World.

Twelve-year old Kori, the family member who is battling a blood disease, has raised over $35,000 dollars for the American Cancer society, inspired by another little girl she met during a hospital stay. There’s your David Cook connection right there. David has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research, in honor of his brother Adam, who died of Brain cancer earlier this year.

Kori has suffered the growth of polyps in her nasal cavity and behind her eyes, a painful condition that has resulted in 17 operations. Doctors believe Kori’s disease has worsened due to environmental issues in the home that include an extreme mold infestation. One of the boys is now living with his biological father to avoid becoming ill.

David Cook is not the first Idol to appear on the show this season. Kellie Pickler filmed a segment, which is set to air on Sunday November 7 on ABC.   There’s no air date yet for the David Cook appearance.

My first thought was thank God Cookie is getting a makeover!!

  • SashaB

David Cook is a mensch. I think that’s awesome. And this little girl has raised $35,000 for the American Cancer Society. Go David.

  • seriously

If he is performing I wonder what song it would be….. CBTM possibly?

  • baxter

Hey MJ- Another connection is the fact that a large majority of David’s extended family ( Grandma, Aunts and Uncles- David’s Mother is from that area also) all still live in the Kokomo Indiana area.

  • tinawina

Well good for him. That’s a nice thing to do.

  • leome

I have never watched this show, what will he do there? I guess he’ll sing, but anything more?

    Good thing to do.

My first thought was thank God Cookie is getting a makeover!!

LOL When I read MJ’s title I though “can’t wait for the hair jokes”.

  • JRB5776

I don’t think he would be satisfied to just perform. Wonder if he’s been shopping for a tool belt yet? I bet he’ll be cute in a hardhat too. heh

    Can’t wait!

I love the show (makes me cry every time) and he’s an awesome person to have on there.

  • sma11ie

Adam’s wife and kids live in Indiana as well, right? Hope he gets some family time as well. This is so awesome. Kori sounds like an amazing little girl who won’t let her own illness affect her love of life or desire to help others. Reminds me of Lindsey Rose a little.

The air date is yet to be determined.

DC mentioned during concert that he was taping a “surprise” that would come out in January. So I’m guessing it’ll air in January. I wonder what song he’ll sing? If there’s no new single by then (sobs), I’m guessing CBTM?

  • SashaB

MJ, the family is going to Disney Land in California.

  • seriously

I’m gonna cross my fingers that he plays Lie and announces it as the new single. I’m optimistic….. sorta….not.

  • incarcerate

    Love him !!

  • sfbb

I don’t think he’ll perform, maybe one of his songs will be played in the background?

Great cause, this is such a good show that does great things for good people. David is such a rock-solid human being. (pun intended). ;-)

  • ggdoorsfan

My first thought was thank God Cookie is getting a makeover!!

rotflmao!! i kinda did as well… this is a good thing for him to be involved in…

  • wellhesback

Yeah, Cookie has lots of family connections in Indiana, and I bet he’s happy about helping that girl who raised all the money for the Cancer Society.

  • eloquent_graffiti

I don’t think it’s any guarantee that he’ll sing. Some musical guests have, some haven’t. (Or at least, some have sung on screen, some may have performed only to have that footage left on the cutting room floor.) I would think that if he were going to perform, then the band would be there, or at least Neal Tiemann.

Regardless, it’s a nice thing to do and hopefully the girl, her family and her community will get a lot out of the project.

  • jumpstart

So this is what DC was excited about in Georgia. Good for him. It’s a great cause and I’ll love seeing him again on TV. Yay!

  • tierbee

Looking forward to seeing this… makes me cry every time, but always happy to have David Cook on my TV!

  • Sassycatz

I don’t think he’ll perform, maybe one of his songs will be played in the background?

Everytime that I’ve watched it and that they’ve had a musical guest, that guest has performed. But, granted, I haven’t seen it as much lately.

By the way, since David is going to be taping Carrie’s X-mas show on the 22nd and 23rd, I’m assuming he’s coming into the Homebuilding project halfway through?

  • rfb

David will do great, he will probably not only sing but will
help with the building process also. All the stars that I have
seen on the show since new season has started (month ago),
has helped in some way with a project. They filmed an episode
here with Ashley Tisdale that aired 3 weeks ago. David will be good
because he has a lot of compassion for sick children. Can’t wait for
    this episode. Go David!

  • movin2thabeet

I have never watched this show, what will he do there?

Well, David has painted apartments before, I believe while in Tulsa, to help pay the rent.

  • gigglesmo3

I would think that if he were going to perform, then the band would be there, or at least Neal Tiemann.

Cook has performed by himself many times, including recent concerts. I don’t think that just because his band will not be there means he definitely won’t perform.

  • sma11ie

Cook has performed by himself many times, including recent concerts.

I think the only times he’s performed by himself (without Neal) since the album dropped has been the recent acoustic performances of Living on a Prayer and Avalanche. As much as I wish for a new single, any new single, I’d be kind of shocked if he does Avalanche… and as much as I love his performances of Living on a Prayer, I’d be disappointed if he did a cover.

I agree there’s no guarantee DC will perform on the show, but I hope he will and I hope we see lots of him :) .

Also, some relevant info from the Headlines thread:

Here’s some info on Kellie’s appearance. I think it’s awesome that Cookie is going to be on there. I’m excited. I’ve watched this show for years. I remember when they built a house for Boey, Chris Daughtry’s little fan.

then the band would be there, or at least Neal Tiemann.

Cook has performed by himself many times, including recent concerts.

I hope he does perform, and yeah, he’s more than capable of performing all by himself.

David is a great guy, and this is just another example of how he’s using his newfound celebrity for good causes.

  • SashaB

So, MaryJBlige was a celebrity volunteer on the season premier of EM:HE. This was from her site

In each episode, the iconic “EM:HE” bus will pick up a new volunteer to join the team and help during the build, providing a rare chance to visit America’s heartland and connect with real people who need help. Celebrity volunteers will pull up their sleeves, create a design project and put their personal stamp on the home. Future announcements will reveal more names of celebrities participating.

The celebrity volunteers will actually roll up in the bus and surprise the deserving family. They will get to know the family’s circumstances and needs one on one. In between pouring foundations and framing walls, the celebrity volunteers will jump right into the center of the town — connecting with the locals, hanging out with the design team, spearheading a community project and bringing their unique personality and talents to the project. It’s not all hard labor and sweat — every episode has plenty of room for good times with good people. Getting on the bus will allow America to get to know the celebrity volunteers in an entirely new way — as a real person who wants to make a real difference.

So it looks like more than just a performance then.

  • eloquent_graffiti

He’s certainly capable of performing by himself. The question is whether or not he would choose to do so when he’s positioned himself as a band frontman and when 99.9% of his arrangements, including acoustic ones, involve at least two guitar players.

The guy is a perfectionist. And he has said repeatedly that his band members make him look good. It’s reasonable to wonder if he might choose simply to participate as a volunteer rather than provide further stripped-down versions of his songs.

The important thing is that he will be there. I’m sure that means the world to these people.

  • hypnoticwhisper

Cookie <3. I hope he gets to help out with the re-building. He's got a heart of gold =)

  • IndyMuse

Edited because SashaB is too fast.

    I’m in Indiana. Must.resist.urge.to.visit.

  • incarcerate

It really doesn’t matter to me if he performs or not….just glad he’s using his celebrity status to do something good. Can’t wait to see the show.

  • Sassycatz

Celebrity volunteers will pull up their sleeves, create a design project and put their personal stamp on the home. Future announcements will reveal more names of celebrities participating.

Since David’s a graphic artist, maybe he’ll leave a nice piece of art work behind.

  • sma11ie

He’s certainly capable of performing by himself. The question is whether or not he would choose to do so when he’s positioned himself as a band frontman and when 99.9% of his arrangements, including acoustic ones, involve at least two guitar players.

One more variable– which song could he perform solo that would be appropriate for the show. When past musicians performed for this show, what songs did they do? Do they have to be, I dunno, uplifting type songs? I know Gavin Rossdale did Love Remains the Same, which is kind of appropriate. What did Mary J do? The DCTR songs that seems most conducive to a solo acoustic performance seem to be Lie and Avalanche, and I don’t think they’re that uplifting. Declaration and Heroes and A Daily Anthem are uplifting, but they’re not conducive to a solo acoustic rendering. TOML maybe but I think I will seriously shoot myself if he does that, heh.

  • gingerly

I don’t think David would do TOML. He’s so done with that song. I think Heroes is the most appropriate song but I disagree that it’s not conducive to a solo acoustic rendering. Any song can be done unplugged…especially if they get the crowd to sing the “You’re still standing” part. They get the crowds to cheer on cue, so I don’t know why they couldn’t get them to sing on cue. I wouldn’t mind if he did LOAP either. It fits the story and he sings it beautifully. But then I never heard the song until David’s audition so I don’t mind it at all.

  • EmmaJK

TOML maybe but I think I will seriously shoot myself if he does that, heh

    .

Ha, TOML would SO fit, but somehow I don’t think we’ll hear that one. I haven’t seen any of the celebrity shows. How have the musicians been set up; are they on a stage, or just sitting on the lawn?

Even though I would like to see him perform, I won’t be disappointed if he doesn’t.

  • IndyMuse

    Nice picture choice, MJ!

  • jumpstart

Since David’s a graphic artist, maybe he’ll leave a nice piece of art work behind.

Awwwww Dave, you don’t need an Extreme Makeover! Oh OK you’re helping with the homebuilding thing? Cool!

I’ve seen other celebs on this show and sometimes, they do a little benefit show. They charge some kind of admission to do a little show and the proceeds go to the family or the home or whatever. Maybe David will do that. He could help paint. He could do some artwork for the home. He could pick up lunch for the crew. hee.

He could sing anything, I think. Maybe Kori has a favorite David Cook song! If he does sing and they show anything on the aired episode, we probably just get a snippet anyway. But who cares, ANY Cook on my TV…it’s all good! When when when? YAY for David taking time to do this. My sweetestheart boy.

  • Sassycatz

Is there a mistake in this article?
    http://www.kokomotribune.com/local/local_story_294105053.html

The family will go on vacation to Disneyland while “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Pennington, designers Paul DiMeo, Didiayer Snyder, and Xzibit, celebrity volunteer Platinum-selling artist David Cook, local builder Hallmark Homes, and community volunteers rebuild their home.

Since I didn’t know what or who an “Xzibit” was I looked him up and he’s a rapper/actor/former host of “Pimp My Ride” who was on Extreme Home Makeover on October 11. It said in one article that the producers like him so much, they invited him back for a show they are doing in Kentucky that airs on November 1 with Clint Black.

Made me wonder is this guy *also* going to be on the show David’s on and does that mean David does less because they already have this other celeb there or has this guy become a regular.

  • 123abc456

Made me wonder is this guy *also* going to be on the show David’s on and does that mean David does less because they already have this other celeb there.

I am not sure, but I don’t think it matters whether “Xzibit” is there. The more the merrier. It is for a good cause.

  • gingerly

This is perfect…Xzibit can do the “You’re still standing” part. OK, Heroes it is.

  • Sassycatz

I am not sure, but I don’t think it matters whether ‘Xzibit’ is there. The more the merrier. It is for a good cause.

No doubt, but I was thinking more about how much David is going to take part. I’m selfishly hoping for more than just something tagged on to the end.

  • houstonrufus

It’s a great cause and Cook’s a great guy. I’m not surprised. I don’t watch the show, but a lot of people do. Seems like a good thing all around.

  • sma11ie

Another thing I’m curious about– I thought usually the celeb volunteers are there for the big surprise, but I heard this happened this morning, and I’m thinking he wasn’t there yet (boo)… cuz isn’t the Carrie special being filmed tomorrow and Friday in LA?

designers Paul DiMeo, Didiayer Snyder, and Xzibit, celebrity volunteer Platinum-selling artist David Cook,

That original quote made it sound like Xzibit is one of the designers, not a celebrity volunteer… weird. Sounds like he’ll be on at least 3 shows this season. Hopefully he doesn’t hog DC’s airtime hehe. I’m selfish too :)

  • SarahBeth

David Cook + Ty Pennington = my naughty dreams come true. yum.

    Ha. Yes. This. Exactly!

I’m so excited to hear about this! Can’t wait to watch the episode!

  • SashaB

Xzibit was also there when Mary J Blige on the season premiere. So I think he’s a regular celebrity that now appears throughout the season.

Mary J. Blige and Xzibit are the first two stars for Season 7 to volunteer on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition…When the new season begins on ABC with a two-hour episode SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 (7:00-9:00 p.m., ET), special guests will contribute far more than special appearances throughout the season – they’ll be part of the design team.

I believe it was MJBlige who performed.

  • Pam

This is a great cause for anyone to be involved with. I’m not surprised that David is doing this at all. It makes me wonder if this is the January surprise he was talking about since the air date is unknown. It’s not something I normally watch, but I’ll make an exception. :)

  • cheesehead

My first thought was thank God Cookie is getting a makeover!!

    lol me too !

  • Trina

Another thing I’m curious about’“ I thought usually the celeb volunteers are there for the big surprise, but I heard this happened this morning, and I’m thinking he wasn’t there yet (boo)’ ¦ cuz isn’t the Carrie special being filmed tomorrow and Friday in LA?

The celebrities are there for the actual unveiling of the house and in this case that’s happening on the 27th so he’ll probably be there. Most of the episodes I’ve seen the celebrity jumps off the bus before they scream “move that bus”.

As far as performing, since he’s not even in an active album cycle I’m not terribly concerned. If he does, great, if he doesn’t no biggie. What he’s doing and what the show is about isn’t about singing anyway. However I’m in the camp that thinks he can take on anything with a simple guitar with or without Neal and/or the whole band and IF they were to ask him to sing a song I can’t imagine him saying no if it means doing it without the band.

  • SharB

yak Cookie’s going to be on my TV again. Can’t wait. he such a sweetie.

  • reinharv

As a spare job, Cookie used to paint houses/apartments to make a few extra bucks. So maybe he’ll actually help spruce it up.

I think people don’t fully realize what an incredible guy David Cook is. He cares deeply about people & he does what he can to help & he’s done some very nice things without the need to advertise it. When Luke Menard went to the hospital during A.I., Cook gave him money to help with his medical bills & Cook sure didn’t have much – whatever he had already made during A.I. Luke spilled the beans on that one after the fact. He still keeps in touch with Lindsay Rose too. Lord knows what else he’s done.

In any case, since Cookie’s going to be on TV again, I can’t be happier.

I honestly didn’t know this show was still on TV when I heard the news this morning, so I looked up the ratings to get a sense of the audience size for a typical episode. It’s typically up against NFL football (sometimes on two networks) and 60 Minutes, but it looks like it still draws solid ratings for a show in its seventh season. Last week’s episode (featuring Trace Adkins) pulled 10.4 million viewers, which isn’t shabby at all.

I really hope Dave performs on the show, but even if he doesn’t it’s great exposure and a lovely thing for him to be a part of. I’ll bet he’s going to have a blast doing it too.

  • sma11ie

Wow, 10.4 mill? I’m impressed and pleasantly surprised as well.

    thedavidcook tweets:

Off to dine with the guys, then practice for tomorrow. Gotta keep up with Underwood.

Ha, he calls her Underwood. What, she’s like your sports bud now, DC?

  • sunchick

I’m sure this will mean a lot to that little girl. I wonder if he’ll steal Ty’s bullhorn? I imagine he could have fun with that.

And lol at Carrie being one of the guys.

  • kathrynTX

I had to say this…since we know Adam likes to raise money for good causes too, could he be on “Extreme Makeover: Homo Edition?” hee. Now now all meant in totally good humor! I love Adam to pieces. (OK honestly, it was my gay little brother who said it when I told him about Cook being on EM:HE!)
