UPDATE: David Cook’s team just surpassed 140K! Plus, once again the David Cook team were the #1 fundraisers! Congrats! The Race for Hope raised 2.3M dollars to help fight brain cancer.

David Cook is running today in the 13th Annual Race for Hope in Washington DC, raising funds to battle brain cancer.   More info HERE. David’s Race Page HERE.

David ran in the race last year. Sadly the morning of the race, his brother Adam, who had been battling cancer for years, succumbed to the disease.

David’s teams, so far, have raised over 139K for cancer research.

Go David!

UPDATE: Added David’s post-race speech after the jump…

So proud to be a David Cook fan today !!!

Yes, so so proud of David Cook & his fans for raising money for brain cancer research. I’m there in spirit in memory of my father who we lost to a brain tumor.
    #Race4Hope is trending on twitter
Here’s a really cool tweet from Ryan Star – the people he mentions are in his band –
2 hours sleep and we are ready to run. @IdoLion @DylonDylonDylon, even my mom and dad. #raceforhope http://tweetphoto.com/20790803

The stream of tweets coming in from David Cook’s Team for a Cure has been a blast to read this morning. Here’s a timeline of the fans who are at the race – lots of Twitpics and observational tidbits:

    http://twitter.com/#list/FoolsApril64/race-for-hope-dc

They played Heroes over the PA as David led the survivors out to start the race. He apparently ran the 5K first and then doubled-back to walk with his Dad. Now he’s standing near the finish-line cheerleading the runners/walkers as they come in. He gave a very emotional speech after the race last year, and I imagine he will be speaking again this year. Vids to come I’m sure. As of this morning the team had raised $139,381.10 towards a cure, blowing past last year’s record total.

  • wellhesback

I read yesterday that Cookie planned to run the race route, then walk it with his father. Lots of photos showing up on twitter; wonder if David will be making some remarks later.

ladymadonna – I remember so well hearing the news about David’s brother’s death, and then hearing David’s incredible brave & heartbreaking speech at the race last year. I am so proud of him for sticking with his committment to come back this year.
Nice that his brother Andrew and his father are with him.

  • poporange

Can someone explain this team thing for raising money more please? Do they take donations for how far the run or how does it work?

  • ladymadonna

I think it’s great too that so many of his musician friends like Monty, Phil Marshall, Ryan Star & his bandmembers and family are also there participating in the race. I love how tight all those guys seem to be.

  • weareallinnocent

Awww, yay for David, Andrew, Dad Cook, and all! :-)

  • ladymadonna

Can someone explain this team thing for raising money more please? Do they take donations for how far the run or how does it work?

Poporange – it’s a fixed 5K charity race with to option to make flat donations (in any amount from $5 up) to team members who are physically running/walking, or who have signed-up to be “virtual runners.” So it’s not like you are pledging a dollar per mile or anything like that. David Cook signed up as the team captain and ran the race himself, with people donating to support him. Over 400 other people joined his team as runners and are soliciting their own donations – the money they raise goes towards the team total. Lots of other teams are fundraising in the same way – many representing corporations or family members running in honor of victims/survivors of brain cancer.

Here’s a link to see the team page for David Cook’s Team For a Cure

Donations can be made through the end of August. Last year Cook’s team was the #1 fundraising team – they had brought in about $97K by race day and $136K by the time donations closed in August. This year the team is already at $140K raised with four more months of fundraising to go.

  • summersnow

Kudos to David Cook and his fans for such an impressive amount of donation! It’s really nice to know that David is also very involved in giving back to the sociey.

The photo of David with his brother, Andrew, and their Dad got me. Go Cook family!

@JJenniac Over 11 million raised in 13 years – 2.3 million raised this year and over 11,000 participants today #race4hope

I’ve been getting choked up all morning looking at all the pics and tweets. That speech last year had to be the most brave yet heartbreaking thing to listen to :( The first anniversary of a loved ones death is always the toughest and I’m so glad he has this race to help him, nothing like helping fighting to kick cancers ass!

Ryan is one hell of a friend. So glad he has him..Monty too. That is one terrific friend.

Cogratulations to David for beating his old time, considering the heat in DC today. It’s not an easy thing to do, when the temps are as high as they were.

So happy for all the people who’ve put months into the Race: for DC and his family, to be able to do this together, in the sun, in memory of their lost guy; for all the families there, those who lost loved ones and the very brave folks living with the disease; all the folks who practiced and got their dogs moving to run or walk; and all who came up with $, little or big.

    Yaaaay!

  • suenigma

While we all wait patiently for footage of this year’s speach to materialize, let’s watch last year’s profoundly moving speach again. I still can’t watch it without choking up – so funny, so articulate, so brave.

ETA: Damn! I can’t figure out how to link. Can someone else please do so, for new visitors to this thread who haven’t seen it already.

  • MollyAnnMay

He apparently ran the 5K first and then doubled-back to walk with his Dad. Now he’s standing near the finish-line cheerleading the runners/walkers as they come in.

That’s terrific. Thanks for the link to the twitter feed ladymadonna and the photos everyone.

David’s speech last year was the first time I really figured out what he’d been going through the previous year — I found him so late after AI I never knew much about him personally and was mainly just following the music. I was so blown away by that speech that I went back and found out more about his story, which is weird for me — I’m not much of a celebrity fan. I’m still not, but I’m very much a fan of David now, as well as his music.

For anyone who’s lost someone or knows someone who’s struggling with this @#$%^&* disease, even a little bit of hope goes a long way. I’m glad he — and now his family and friends — have discovered this organization. It seems like a really positive, energetic way to *do* something.

oh cookie, i just watched the speech… i could tell he’s gettin choked up but tryin not to… race4hope event was done in perfect timing of adam’s… cause, it is something that dave will always cherish and something to turn sadness into hope.

ah my heart, i didn’t watch back the speech last year, it is a vid that i avoid coz it breaks my heart so bad…

anyway, proud david cook fan here… not only by the music. but also because he’s a great human being.

  • tierbee

We’re home – amazing, inspiring morning. My husband and my 6 yr old saw David and my son got a brief “Hey, buddy” that he is so excited about :). It really is such an amazing event and the fundraising this year is absolutely amazing. Even the husband had to admit that David is pretty special. It was a great way to start the day, even if the front tire of my jogging stroller did break 5 minutes into the race and I had to push it popped up on the back wheels the whole way! My 4 yr old thought that was fabulous :)

  • BootStar

Brava, tierbee, for getting out there and running with them all. David Cook is the best idol ever, and he also has the best fans!

ETA: Just watched the video. Well. He held it together a little bit better than last year but I didn’t. It’s so obvious how much having his friends and family there means to him. So glad they are there.

Pretty amazing that the DC RFH team was able to beat their total from last year.

Tierbee, you’re a great role model for your kids as well!

ETA: I’m a little teary eyed after watching his speech. Loved how he gave props to Ryan Star at the end and then the hug with his dad. awww

  • tierbee

Curlin, he inspires me, too. He really does. And bonus that my kids love him and can be inspired by him as well. I somehow managed to hold my 4 yr old the whole time David was speaking so he could see him and my legs held up by some miracle (man do my feet hurt!) — I wish I had a free hand to film the little guy singing along when they played “Light On” after David finished. It was cute :) My little guy was also thrilled to see Ryan Star, he loves “Breathe.”

Okay, I never thought I’d do this, cuz I always thought talking about what city I live in or giving specifics about where I’ve been on a blog was a little creepy (YMMV– this is just my personal hang up!)… but I’m gonna break my rule and speak up, cuz this event was in a word, awesome. I actually ran at the R4H today (pretty sure my chip time beats David’s time since I started a little ways back, and I think David started up front, but I gotta check ;)). Anyway, I went to support a friend, but showed up early to catch a glimpse of David, and stayed for his speech.

I just have to say that I’ve been to my share of charity races, and this one was by far the most emotional, moving, and well-done event I’ve ever been a part of. I was pretty emotional as soon as I got there, just seeing the Wall of Hope, looking around at all the survivors in their yellow shirts, seeing the various teams and all their team spirit, and just the friendliness and good vibes of everyone all around. And then the speeches– not just David’s but everyone else’s moving stories. And omg, all those kids. I’ve been to cancer races before, where everything seems much more race-oriented and impersonal, but even though there were 11,000 participants at the R4H, it felt like the most personal race I’ve ever been to. I totally get what David meant last year when he described the experience as “uplifting”. So many survivors, so many teams, so much HOPE, even for those who are racing in memory of lost ones. I’m still, so so verklempt. Truly amazing morning, I will be happy to come back every year.

Okay, shallow time: David is like, really pretty in person. His face is so… I dunno how to describe, but kind and sweet and warm? Haha, what every rockstar wants to hear, I’m sure. Even the beard is pretty. And while I totally see a little (cute) gut in a few pictures posted, in person, you don’t notice at all I think because he’s got a tall enough build (and I’m kinda small). Random question: What color are his eyes?
    http://twitpic.com/1kd8vy

This is exactly the color they appear in person, even from farther away. They’re kind of striking in person, but I can’t decide what color they are. Are they grey? Greyish-green? Blue-green? Oh yeah, Ryan Star is pretty hot. And Beth is totally the prettiest mom ever.

Oh, and tierbee, I totally remembered noticing a little boy get really excited when they started playing Light On after the speeches as I was leaving. It could’ve been your son?

  • tierbee

Oh, and tierbee, I totally remembered noticing a little boy get really excited when they started playing Light On after the speeches as I was leaving. It could’ve been your son?

Mine was a little blonde boy, I was holding him so he could see David. He was loving it :)

And that… I’ve done other 5ks for charity before but this one? This one is just amazing. The whole *vibe* is just so hopeful and inspiring. My husband was really moved by the kiddie survivors – made me give my boys a really, really big hug. And being within a few feet of David again reminded me that, yeah, he is awfully purty ;) I’ve always found him “smaller” in person, too – more slender? Purty. I saw him go by when he was running, with that fair skin the was so flushed and hot – it was *warm* out there today. I didn’t see Ryan but did see Andrew walk by a bit later, pornstache and all. Heh!

Beth is totally the prettiest mom ever.

She is, my husband was asking who she was. He couldn’t believe she was David’s mom ;)

  • tierbee

    And, ooh!

    http://twitpic.com/1kd8vy

    I hadn’t seen that picture yet – nice :)

  • tierbee

And sma11ie, good job running today in that heat! I’m a walker. Maybe next year I’ll get in shape enough to run it!!

  • Garnetstar

smallie thanks for the great recap. Is it odd that Neal and Andy didn’t show up? Maybe not. But to see how much it meant for Monty and Ryan to be there it just seems odd that they didn’t come. Shrug. No big deal not trying to start anything. They probably have their own commitments and family stuff to do.

  • tierbee

Garnetstar, I can’t imagine Neal running – does he ever work out? He doesn’t strike me as a big athlete sort of guy. I had wondered if Andy would come, too. Glad David had Monty along, though, who always seems to happy and sweet. I love his smile!

  • sma11ie

Mine was a little blonde boy, I was holding him so he could see David. He was loving it

I think he was blonde– I just caught a quick glimpse and thought it was cute– he wasn’t being carried though.

I saw him go by when he was running, with that fair skin the was so flushed and hot – it was *warm* out there today.

It was flipping hot and humid. Not ideal running weather at all– David (and I) would’ve likely gotten better times if it had been cooler. At least the sun stayed hidden for most of it, but I’m pretty sure I looked like a tomato for a while after I finished. I actually saw David’s parents walking the other way as I was finishing– if I had known David was gonna loop back to walk with them I might’ve hung around to stalk a little. LOL, just kidding.

While you didn’t run, I gotta commend you for pushing a stroller with a broken wheel though. That’s a lot of extra weight!

Yeah, it was so great that Ryan showed. Wish I could go to his show, but I’m knee deep in finals week… boo. And yeah, I’m sure there’s a good reason Andy and Neal couldn’t make it. I wouldn’t read into it to much.

  • tierbee

I’m still hoping to get out to his show (Ryan’s) – not 100% sure since I have oodles of proofreading to do, but if vascot will enable me, I’m in. Heh!

  • tierbee

And speaking of oodles of proofreading – it’s really hard to proofread when I keep nodding off sitting at the computer!! That heat really wore me out. My 4 yr old fell asleep the last mile so at least he got a nap ;)

  • SashaB

Damn, that Race for Hope speech was so touching. So glad that David’s family and friends could be with him this year. After watching that, it’s remarkable how he was able to run last year. Wow. David really is an incredible guy. Really, really inspiring.

  • hypertwink

    Cookie, I love you.

Ryan Star, I want to lick your arms.

    Andrew, why the unfortunate pornstache?

  • tierbee

    Andrew, why the unfortunate pornstache?

LOL, when I saw him walk by the first thing that popped in my head was, “Hey, it’s Andrew! And the pornstache!” Hee :)

And I’m laughing that you just posted “Cookie, I love you” ’cause I was watching the video for his speech and, well, that’s what I was thinking too. Love him. Can’t quit him, don’t want to.

  • SashaB

@BrazilianWNs David Cook (@thedavidcook) interview with Tommy McFly from MIX 107.3 http://ow.ly/1G1ix

  • tierbee

Aw, that’s cool to see a Tommy McFly interview, I had emailed him last year to thank him for covering the race and he really spoke highly of David.

  • Sassycatz

I want to break my self-imposed silence to say that, despite the built-on-a-swamp heat and humidity of Washington, the race course was so lovely and Washington looked beautiful today. I wanted to take pictures of everything, and *I live here.* I could take pictures any day!

David amazes me. I wish I had had my sh*t together, like he does, when I was his age. Hell, I don’t have it together now. I alternately want to take some time and talk with him, on the one hand. And, on the other, I would not want to impose myself on what is a personal hero’s journey for him. (And, I’m not talking about his music career.)

He makes me feel that I should look more into the organizations and associations that are trying to eradicate the diseases and health issues that have affected my own family. I am blessed not to have anyone in my family or amongst my friends who have had a brain tumor, but my family sure has been hit by strokes, for instance. God knows, I should probably be in the front lines of a race to eradicate that horrific affliction.

As for Neal and Andy, I have no idea why they weren’t there. As someone else said, for all his current slimness, Neal does not strike me as athletic in the least. (Heaven knows how he keeps his “figure.”) But, this race isn’t about athletics. There were people walking today with canes and braces and in wheelchairs. (I couldn’t let the guy with the cane beat me, so that really sped me up and shortened my time. Thank you, guy with cane!)

Regarding Andy, I don’t know. Don’t have a feel for what might keep him away other than another obligation. But, considering his wonderful photographic and video abilities, I think he would have loved posting lots of pictures and twitvids of the race.

Kyle has a young son, so I imagine every spare moment he has is spent with family. He was away so much from them last year.

  • tierbee

There were people walking today with canes and braces and in wheelchairs. (I couldn’t let the guy with the cane beat me, so that really sped me up and shortened my time. Thank you, guy with cane!)

LOL, this amazing guy in a wheelchair blew past me and I never did catch up with him! I would blame it on the wheelie stroller but… I’m just not very fast, I guess :)

  • Trina

Monty also flew out to the BTE event in New Orleans, and of course I’ll never forget how he dropped everything to be there for David when Joey left. Like I said, that is one amazing friend..and why I think David is always mentioning him on Twitter. Neal and Andy are the ones the fans go nuts for but I bet David would love for Monty to be really be embraced by the fans.

  • Sassycatz

Well, Monty was certainly embraced at the Phil Marshall concert. Long line to talk to him and give appreciation and regards.

But, you’re right. If Andy, Neal, and/or Kyle had been there, I don’t think the line would’ve been quite as long. He’s not as “cute” or “edgy” as the other guys, so doesn’t attract as much attention, but he’s a real sweetheart.

  • SashaB

Yup, and Monty fixed David’s drywall. He was also in David’s Eleanor Rigby (AI hometown visit) segment. Monty and David go way back. Big fan of Monty. Go Monty!

  • tierbee

I love Monty, prefer him to Joey actually. He looks like a teddy bear :)

  • Sassycatz

    He was!?

I don’t miss Joey, per se, but I do miss his random leaps in the air.

  • Garnetstar

Monty is a treasure. He really is a clutch player. He might not be as technically gifted or showy like Joey is but I think you know he will always have your back.

Bass players seem to be the wild card in bands they are always the band member that leaves in many bands but I think that is because they play other instruments and have other aspirations.

That interview was nice. So a late summer early fall release for DCTR2. hmmmmm.

  • offside

Ryan Star, I want to lick your arms.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with us.

  • Balance

What an awesome, awesome day. Thanks so much to everyone who was there and brought back pics and recaps for all of us that could only be there in spirit.

Nothing against Joey ’cause he was fun to watch, but I like Monty more too. I don’t know enough about bass to tell which one is more technically gifted, but I felt like the whole dynamic of the band changed when Monty came on board..in a great way. He’s like David in that his genuine spirit just shines through both on stage and off. The fact that he’s obviously such a great friend to David is just icing on the cake.

Can.not.wait.for the for the next phase of David Cook and the Anthemic’s career.

  • competitivebynature

I absolutely LOVE Monty, he is such a sweet guy. So is Cookie. And Ryan. Hell the whole Cook entourage is amazing. It is so great to see genuine people working to find a cure. I donated but feel like I could have done more. It is so inspiring to see David and his family do this and seem happy even after they lost Adam. David is just awesome.

  • progression

Thanks to everyone for sharing stories and pictures from today. What a great event for a great cause. The race turnout and record fundraising is a real tribute to Dave, that he inspires the kind of loyalty he does in people. Amazing guy.

I got to see Monty live for the first time at the second show he played with Dave, and liked him right from the start. The other four all have a lot of intensity on the stage, Monty just looks like he’s having a blast. He’s a nice addition to the overall dynamic of the group. And clearly a good guy and a great friend as well.

  • tierbee

I am headed out now to Ryan’s show – figure a) I like his music and b) the guy ran the Race for Hope today with his friend so… I can certainly get on board with supporting him :)

  • sma11ie

Have fun and bring back reports! I really like Ryan’s music too, but I really need to study. Tried to nap earlier but couldn’t, and still have a pretty bad sun headache. Don’t think a concert would be wise. Tell him fans who couldn’t make it hope he comes back soon!

Will do, leaving my camera behind but if the lighting is good enough will have my iPhone and may just tweet a time or two ;)

  • mandabutter

Yay, kudos to everyone involved in the race/fundraising!! I donated last yr, but unfortunately could not this year.
David is soooo generous and his team is incredible also.
    A great day for fans!
I wish the media and entertainment-driven shows would report on this more often and show this side of our Idols. Such an inspiration.

  • wellhesback

Popping back in to give a HUGE Thank you to everyone who shared their photos and videos from the event today. It is wonderful that through this generous fandom I can feel like I participated too, if you know what I mean. So many great photos of the beautiful Mr. Cook.

Oh – one little thing. Neal & Andy appear to be great friends to David, but that doesn’t mean that have to be part of everything he does. Monty used to play for Phil Marshall who was in DC last night playing a concert (proceeds to RFH), so he had an extra reson to be there.

Thanks once more to everyone who was there and shared their stories!

Ryan Star, I want to lick your arms.

    Hypertwink, WTH?

I’m not Hypertwink, but what? He’s got sexy arms. Noticed it at my first concert ;-)

Smallie, I think David has said his eyes are hazel. They look kinda gray in that picture, maybe with a hint of green. So pretty.

Thanks everyone for the stories and pictures and videos.

Also, I love Monty. He’s a big sweetie. I love Joey, too, but I’m happy we have Monty.

I’m not sure if this picture has been posted already or not, but even if it has, it is so pretty that it bears repeating.

Really? I’ve always wondered what he thinks they are… but hazel doesn’t sound right. Hazel eyes, from my understanding, usually have a light brownish base with golden and greenish flecks… David’s eyes appear to be pretty much a solid grey-green/grey-blue/blue-green depending on the picture… Oh well, it’s not that important, but I just always wondered cuz I don’t feel like it’s a very common eye color, cuz I haven’t seen his eye color very often. Does Beth have the same color eyes? I thought her eyes were blue for some reason.

  • AIaddict

WOW! 140K, go Team! that is awesome and we can still donate till August? Is that right? Congrats to David and thanks to everyone for the great videos and pics. Much love to Cookie and the band.

  • wellhesback

suenigma – Thanks! I hadn’t seen that photo before, and what can I say but wow. If there’s anyone who doesn’t understand why I think Cookie is good looking that’s one of the photos I would show to explain. Exhibit A, as it were. and now I’ll exit the shallow end

Well, it might have been Beth who said it. I think this might have come from a fan report, though, so take it with a grain of salt. It’s what I remember, anyway. But I think I’ve seen pictures where his eyes have golden flecks. I’d google some and post them, but it makes me feel kinda creepy to analyze pictures of him in minute detail, tbh, even if it’s just his eyes, so I’d rather not, lol. His eye color is hard to pin down, though, I know that much. They’re always a different color depending on the picture or what he’s wearing, so it’s like guessing the correct shade only to have it change on you. Frustrating.
I don’t know what color Beth’s eyes are.

  • sma11ie

it makes me feel kinda creepy to analyze pictures of him in minute detail, tbh, even if it’s just his eyes, so I’d rather not

LOL, point taken. But considering there was a hilarious wikipedia entry dedicated to “Chris Pine’s Eyes” that stayed up for quite a while, I’ll say this level of “detail analysis” for lack of a better term, is not unique to “creepy” Idol fans (/sarcasm), and is generally innocuous and just-for-fun. As an aside, Chris Pine has really pretty eyes, sure, but they’re a pretty common baby blue. No deep analysis needed, right? David’s eyes, on the other hand, I cannot pin down the color! LOL. Okay, I’ll stop being creepy =P.

ETA: I was joking, no worries. We’re not creepy! (hehe, I doth protest too much? j/k j/k)

  • Zarita

Oh no, I wasn’t calling you creepy! I think you’re kidding, but if you’re not I hope you didn’t take it that way. I know it’s just for fun, and it really has nothing to do with Idol, or with me thinking no one else should do it. It’s just my own weird line for myself. I just don’t like looking at pictures of anyone for extended periods of time. I feel like they’re looking back at me and it freaks me out. You can analyze to your heart’s content and come back with what you decide, I won’t judge :P

  • seriously

He has gray eyes. It wasn’t hard for me to figure out. Y’know gray is an eye color. LOL (They are beautiful though) (It’s kinda wrong for a guy to have such a pretty eye color) ha

My eyes are hazel, they have a brown base and green flecks. They kinda look like milk chocolate or muddy water. Somedays I like my eye color and other days I wish they were gray. LOL

  • Sassycatz

The other four all have a lot of intensity on the stage, Monty just looks like he’s having a blast.

Andy may have intensity, but he doesn’t always outwardly express it. I always thought, especially with Joey hopping about, that Andy tended to keep to his corner of the stage. When Monty came on board, I noticed immediately that Andy moved about the stage more. I don’t know whether that’s because, in the past, Andy was afraid Joey was going to slam into him or that, since Joey’s gone, Andy is stepping the dynamics up a notch.

  • progression

David’s eyes appear to be pretty much a solid grey-green/grey-blue/blue-green depending on the picture…

IIRC Beth said his eyes change color depending on his mood and what he’s wearing. Which makes sense since there are pictures out there with eye colors rangin from dark brown to light apple-green and everything in between.

  • http://whited-79.livejournal.com WD

So proud of you guys and the team and those who ran! Go team and Dave! Hopefully the money will be distributed resourcefully for the good cause.

It was so nice to see all of Dave’s family at the race with him today. Everything seemed to really fall into place perfectly especially with today being the first anniversary of Adam’s passing. It’s hard to forget David’s emotional speech one year ago. That’s something that I think will stick with most of us forever.

13 months ago today, Dave was here doing his first show after leaving the road for the 4 days to visit Adam. I was so amazed that he was able to put on the show that he did considering all of the emotions that he must have been feeling at that particular time. The emotion really started coming during Lie. I’ll never forget that as long as I live. Near the end of it, he just stopped and that point I realized he was crying. I thought I was going to get emotional. Of course with the shows that came a month later in the days between Adam’s death and the funeral, it became apparent that he couldn’t just couldn’t bring himself to perform Lie in some of the vids that surfaced. It just made you want to reach out and hug him. I can’t imagine the pain that both him and his family must have been going through. I don’t think any of us can.

It’s been so wonderful to see what Dave has been able to do since with his celebrity since his idol win to raise awareness not only for brain tumors but for all cancers.

It was great to see that Monty and Ryan showed up as well. It’s been great to see the bond of friendship that has formed between Ryan and Dave since the never ending tour came to a close. :)

seriously, I know grey’s an eye color, haha, but his definitely are not always just grey. I guess they have bluish and greenish undertones that get brought out depending on mood, what he’s wearing, etc. I guess that settles it, but I don’t mind staring at more pictures for research haha.

Thanks, everyone, for this wonderful thread! What a powerful day for David, his family, and all who participated in person, in thought, and through donations.

p.s. David looks fit and handsome, indeed. :) That’s a beautiful photo.

Great quotes from David in the People article. Really nice to see them focus on a cause that’s worthy of some national attention. Great pic from Jeff Kolodin. Seriously broke my heart to see all those little ones in the yellow shirts. So amazing that 2.3 million was raised to fund much needed research. The statistics are staggering. Number 1 cancer killer in young people under 40, surpassing leukemia, and 600,000 people afflicted today. And researchers don’t know what causes it, and often don’t have the information needed to prescribe the best treatments.

So I just found out that David crossed the finish line RIGHT around the same time that I did, but I totally did not see him. I was actually looking out for him for much of my run, but I figured he was further ahead since I started out behind a large pack of people and lost him early. And by the time I crossed the finish line I was busy trying to a) kick it in and b) not die LOL. And then I went straight for water. It was sooo muggy. But if I had hung around the finish line for a little bit, I would’ve seen him. Oh well, no complaints. I did see him from like just several feet away, just with lots of other people surrounding him. It was a great event.

The looks on people’s faces in this photo — I admire what they’re doing, just doesn’t inspire me to want to get up early and go for a run. :)

Yeah, good quotes in that People article.

ETA: I heard “Come Back To Me” in the grocery store this evening. And I kinda sang along a few lines of it out loud. Couldn’t resist.

  • OmahaCookie

Go back and check out the people.com link again if you did before they updated the photo – now it has a picture of David with some of the brain tumor survivor kids.

Whew, finally in for the night – man do I have some tired feet. Ryan Star’s show was awesome, first time I’ve seen him headline and play a longer set. If you get a chance, catch one of his shows – he’s really tremendously talented and so passionate about his music. This was one seriously awesome day, starting out with the race and sharing that with my family, and then ending it with Ryan’s show and some girls’ time ;)

When I was 9 I met a girl at camp and she told me her mom’s eyes change colors with what she wears. Like from blue to brown, and she was African American. So I don’t know if that’s possible. And I was 9 so maybe I recall incorrectly. Anywho, David’s eyes seem to be gray 75% of the time. Maybe it’s the lighting. :)

  • sma11ie

Tierbee, glad u had a good time. I’m still trying to study :/. I still can’t believe I’ve never seen Ryan live cuz I really like him. Hope he comes back- he seems to tour nonstop- maybe after his album finally drops!

seriously, I definitely know people whose eye color changes with what they’re wearng, if they’re watery, etc. It’s cuz their eyes are not one color, and so different colors get brought out depending on light reflecting off nearby colors, etc. That seems to be the case with David, but for whatever reason, I was wondering what to call his particular eye color =p

I know a lot of pics/vids have already been posted here, but I thought I would just link the RFH thread page from DCO because there
are a ton of items listed there (mostly by the great pweller) and I know not all folks frequent the same sights.

I’m thrilled that it went off so well, and that DC represented itself accordingly (less the disgusting swampiness). The focus on the survivors is amazing and beautiful.

I thought I would just link the RFH thread page from DCO because there are a ton of items listed there (mostly by the single-minded pweller) and I know not all folks frequent the same sights.

    Fixed. Heh.

Also, the guy’s eyes are green. Sometimes grey-green, sometimes blue-green, but unless he’s highlighting with tinted contacts, I don’t think there’s another primary cast.

I hope he comes back, too. Seeing him headline was really special, and I think it was a special night for him, too.

There aren’t really any videos popping up yet though I suspect there will be, but there are a couple clips floating around. I’ll pop over here with better ones if I can find them. He played some songs I wasn’t familiar with and they were beautiful. And as a side note, his parents were there and they are adorable. He had cousins and parents and his beautiful wife all there. Really nice night, especially capping the Race for Hope day which he did talk about. You could tell he was really moved by it. Hopefully a video will pop up of him talking about the race.

  • sma11ie

Tierbee, sounds like a great show, did it have a good turnout? Hope more
    vids turn up :)

  • tierbee

It was a really small venue and I’d say most of the people there were pretty devoted fans. He had asked at one point who had done the Race for Hope earlier and pretty much everyone cheered. There were scattered random people in there who seemed to really be enjoying it. The one guy standing by me said, “Wow, they really like this guy!” heh. It was a good vibe, though. Sunday nights are tough, I think, and it was still a pretty good showing and definitely an awesome sing a long on Breathe. I’d love for him to come back and play a better night. I know I *shouldn’t* have gone but I couldn’t resist a $10 Ryan Star show, especially a headlining one. Well worth it, and this really is a guy who wants it, who is passionate about his music, and who just seems to me to be a good, good guy who loves his fans and is completely unpretentious. Not hard to root for him. I even went over to VH-1 and threw some votes at him for the countdown. I like the people David surrounds himself with :)

  • Brisblondie

I love this thread! Thanks for all the goodies. David is really living out that “Dash” tattoo of his in an inspiring way.

By the way, I’ve met David 3 different times up close now and all three his eyes were extremely green, even in the pictures I have from those meetings. His eyes do change colors as I’ve seen other pics were they look darker or murkier green/gray, but never really hazel, as they seem to have no brown in them up close.

  • sunchick

I’m a couple days late, but I’m so glad to read David’s team surpassed their goal and then some. Congrats and much love to all here who participated. Whoever said the entire Cook entourage is made of mensch (paraphrasing) pretty much pegged it. Those videos got to me.

Random aside….biologically speaking, what I was taught was that hazel is not an eye color per se. Green, blue, brown, amber, grey, all distinct colors that are a result of the amount and type of pigment. Hazel, however, refers to an iris that is not predominantly one color but is a pattern of those colors. For example, I have hazel eyes which are brownish around the pupil and green toward the edge, with flecks of amber. Eye color does also reflect the light from the surroundings, which makes it look different in different light, etc. All that said, I have no idea what color Dave’s eyes are, but they sure are purdy.
