The Race for hope begins with David Cook leading the brain tumor survivors via @SteveCase.

David Cook ran and completed the 5k run/walk  Race For Hope in Washington DC this morning! His team were the #1 fundraisers, raising over $150,000 to help support the brain tumor community.

David runs in honor of his brother Adam Cook who died of brain cancer on May 2,  2009,  just hours before he ran in the 2009 Race for Hope.

“Such an amazing day!,” tweeted David after the race, “Thanks to everyone who came out and/or donated. And don’t forget you can still donate!”  (Donate to David’s team HERE.)

After the race, David spoke to the crowd.  As soon as video surfaces, I’ll post it here!

Congratulations to Cookie! What a great cause. I run 5ks when I get the chance, always so heartwarming.

  • fadetowhite

Congrats to everyone who took part in the race – the fundraising total was brilliant and for a great cause.

  • Curlin

Already posted in the headlines thread earlier, but Congrats to David and everyone that participated and/or donated to this worthy cause!

Results are already posted for anyone interested.

    Nice, so fast!

And it was great to meet you sma11ie – and to see you again tierbee. So when’s the next show?

Not soon enough! Hee. Enjoy the Friday vids. They’re good. Friday’s show was sooo good, sigh.

  • HappyDaisy

Thanks for the great video, smallie!

TwigLA and iani, thanks for sharing, wishing both of you peace.

    Thank you David Cook.

  • Pam

Seeing that vid especially with the younger participants taking pictures with Dave is very heartwarming to see. He takes this race and cause very seriously and I admire that about him. Congrats to all of you here who participated in today’s race. For all of you who saw Friday’s show, well sorry but I’m a little jealous. Hee

ETA: Thanks for the vid sma11ie. :)

Aw, I had fun you guys, we need a tour ASAP so we can take our good times on the road ;)

I have to work all evening but I’m gonna have to spend some time on those videos… that show was just so so good.

  • weareallinnocent

Dang, the dude makes me cry all the time. At least I usually can count on him crying with me. :-)

Thanks for the video. Congrats to all who participated!

This is probably my favorite pic from the whole event

  • Sassycatz

Some people may point out his relatively underwhelming album sales but I love how he has been active in such worthwhile causes.

What album are you referencing here?

  • sunchick

Oh gigglesmo3, that pic is just :D. His shirt. *sniff* Congrats to David and all involved.

Pssst, SteveAI, the album hasn’t even dropped yet, LOL. Unless of course you have seen the future, in which case you need to spoiler font those clairvoyant sales numbers, dude.

SteveAI, so do many, Flove David’s commitment to things that make a difference –

I’m thinking you have a little confusion there, re the last Platinum album, and the new one doesn’t drop til June 28th – – but it’s OK – Even if David doesn’t sell 1.3 Million of the next one – there will still be love and support for the man, his music and his causes.

    KWIM?

Haven’t had time to read the thread yet, but just wanted to say that picture up top made me cry. Seriously, I am SO impressed by David and his committment to this cause. Dude’s a keeper!

Congrats to all those who participated, too!

That picture is all kinds of win, from his facial expression (hee, love his many expressions) to that shirt (sniff).

Yeah, I mean, I’d be a fan of his anyway because I love his music and his voice but I admire him so much for how giving he is with his time and his heart. I had a good vantage point off to the side while the speeches were going on and was able to see him for quite a while and when he’s interacting with the survivors, the kids especially… well. Heartstrings tug. He has such an expressive face, so it’s all there, you know?

Unless of course you have seen the future, in which case you need to spoiler font those clairvoyant sales numbers, dude.

    That made me giggle ;)

Hey now, that’s my thing! His expressive face is my favorite thing about him, lay off =P. You’re all about the lips, right? His expressions are my thing ;). Hee.

But seriously, word to everything you said. I’m always on the verge of, or tearing up during the post-race speeches, it must be even tougher for him to listen to them side-stage every year before going up there. I saw him consoling his little niece for a while, and at the end when the Cook family and friends got on stage for a picture, Kendra (Adam’s wife) was still crying and her eyes were all red, and I started tearing again. Man… heavy day, but also really uplifting to see all the survivors’ bravery and resolve. There was a teenager survivor next to me in the crowd and she was all shy about going up at the end for pics with David, and I was like go go go!

I found some great pics that you can click (unlike the Wenn ones) on contactmusic.com. Here’s a great one, aww: http://www.contactmusic.com/photos.nsf/main/david-cook-at-the-race-for-hope-starting-line-at-freedom-plaza_3319649

Ha!! See, it’s your fault, you made me pay more attention to his face-other-than-lips ;)

Man… heavy day, but also really uplifting to see all the survivors’ bravery and resolve.

It is, isn’t it? I find it heartbreaking and hopeful all at once – it inspires me, makes me want to give back even more, and breaks my heart all at once. I was over by the Kisses for Kayla folks when the survivors were walking out with David and everyone was crying all around me, then here comes “Heroes” and… well. *Sniff*

Was a great race. Very emotional when the Survivors and David walked up to the starting line (we were right behind the mobile van, so we had a great view of them all) but it made us run that much harder to fight and support those still with us and honor those that we’ve lost. Will definitely be doing this again next year.

  • wordnerdarchie

I had a great time in DC. It was my first time running in any race since high school, let alone a 5k, and at my age, I was satisfied with my experience. I definitely will try to do it again.

David was kind & gracious to all the people that he met. Of course, I expected nothing less.

The concert was unbelievable. It truly felt like we were all family and working towards a common cause. If any of you have not had the pleasure of participating in walks/runs for any cancer fundraisers, I urge you to give it a try. It is inspiring.

  • sma11ie

I can’t stop listening to Time Marches On, and it’s permanently stuck in my head. Whoever said it could apply to R4H totally ruined that song for me, in a good way. Its melody and words are so poignant. I know there’s a line about packing bags, but regardless, the song still vibes like it can apply to losing someone for any reason.

Up at the starting line and out in the crowd after the speech, I heard a lot of people who were at the race to support their own loved ones talk about how much they like David, and how they liked his music, and how cool it is that he uses his celebrity for something like this. It was pretty cool hearing such good things said about David by non-diehards IRL. Speaking of IRL, I need to come down off these clouds from this crazy intense, wonderful, inspiring, fantabulous weekend and get back to it… ack, FINALS.

Heh, I’m having a little trouble getting back to regular ol’ daily life ;)

The vibe was amazing, wasn’t it? He was feeling it, too… which is awesome because he feeds off the crowd and I think that’s one reason we got such an amazing show. My favorite yet, and I’ve been to a show or two (or seven or something, cough).

  • weareallinnocent

I’ve not focused on the song’s lyrics enough to speak to this, but I do recall that David was packing/unpacking bags in DC for the first Race for Hope just as/after he learned of his brother’s death. So, it’s still on/near the point. :-)

  • Curlin

Thanks to everyone for the additional pics posted. Tierbee, SEVEN concerts?? I’m super jealous! Oh, I think Steve honestly just had Cookie confused with Archie.

  • tierbee

And I don’t travel to shows, either, more than a couple hours! I’ve been *super* lucky how often he’s come to VA/DC. My longest trip was from Northern VA to Radford and that one was my “bonus show” because my friend knew I was a fan and got me free tickets. That was my first show and the only one where I met him, haha. I started off with a bang!

    He’s kinda addictive… :)
