ETA: Check out this brand-new interview with David Cook from Entertainment Weekly.   It’s pretty in-depth and covers everything from that 2nd indie album David nearly had finished before his Idol stint, to giving Simon the what-for during the Idol finale, to recording his first major label album.

David also elaborates on the themes of some of the songs on his album.   We’ve got a lyric thread going on here.   See if your interpretation matches David’s! One song “Bar Ba Sol” is from the Atlanta band Injected.   A poster from DC-42 found the original song online:

I’m liking that a lot!

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

  • About making his first major-label record   – I only hated having to change mindsets. I enjoyed touring and I enjoyed recording, and I hated having to rewire my brain between the two. That was tough….But it helped that [producer] Rob Cavallo and I really hit it off. And I was able to bring my guitar player aboard early. Neal has an idea where my head is at musically, so it was nice to have somebody in the studio, when I wasn’t there, who spoke for me and spoke accurately….I’m still kind of in awe of it. To do what we did in this amount of time is no small feat. We essentially put a year’s worth of work into three months.

David Cook continues to promote his single “Light On” in a couple of radio interviews from this morning, and I have them right here for your listening pleasure!

The listeners of WKZL in Greensboro, NC give “Light On” a thumbs up during a “Make it or Break it” segment. David talks about writing “Permanent” with Raine Maida.

This interview, from z99.5 out of Indianapolis has David describing his stage fright before he took the stage on Saturday Night Live. “I remember just being really nauseous and dry heaving, I was so scared…it’s a different vibe from Idol for sure…”

Nevertheless, he says he had a “blast” and that the cast couldn’t have been nicer. He attended the after-party with host Ben Affleck, his wife Jennifer Garner and the rest of the SNL cast.

Cookie sounds so sexy and sweet in these interviews. Thanks so much for posting them, MJ.

  • Trina

Might as well put this here..

Fantastic interview EW’s Chris Willman conducted

I love the part about Wayne Ishman meeting him for the first time.

  • Michelle

Wow! So Analog Heart was supposed to be an Axium record?

I had Bar-ba-sol as my guess for the Cathy Dennis co-write. Oops, scratch that I guess–

  • FolkFan

That’s a great interview, Trina. Thx for posting.

  • leome

One day we’ll get a Cook/Carrie duet. Rock country stuff.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

    He is simply wonderful.

  • cheese

Great interview! I love his sense of humor.

I also loved getting some more insight into a couple of the songs. Although, I must admit I feel like an idiot for trying to interpret the lyrics for Bar-Ba-Sol and Mr. Sensitive as deep reflections on his Idol experience, lol. (Mr. Sensitive is pretty cool and weird now that he’s explained it). I guess I’ll never know what Bar-Ba-Sol is about.

  • Michelle

(Mr. Sensitive is pretty cool and weird now that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s explained it)

Yeah, what was that all about? And here it’s one of the prettiest snippets of the bunch. LOL. As for who wrote what and where, I guess all mysteries will be solved on the 18th.

  • bluejeans

Ugh, I fucking love every answer he gave and props to the interviewer for asking good questions.

I wouldn’t blame Wayne Isham (and the interviewer) for gushing over Cook. :)

  • CathyMK

MissKatieLeigh at DC42 found the original version of Bar-Ba-Sol, by the band Injected:

    http://www.injectedfans.com/music/ttay/Barb-a-sol.mp3

  • Laurie

I don’t believe for one minute that the guy that did the interview didn’t know David was going to be on SNL. Give me a break. I had it on in the background. Yeah right!

  • http://www.myspace.com/laurskaos laurskaos

I think Mr. Sensitive could still relate to his Idol experience, just in a weird kinda way. He says “I wanted to write about something outside myself and get a little metaphorical. He lives in a village devoid of feeling. They get so afraid of this child who has feelings that they kill him. It kind of took on this Tim Burton-like, twisted vision of James and the Giant Peach for me.”

Maybe the “village devoid of feeling” is like Los Angeles, and the child who has feelings is David…he’s this Mr. Sensitive in this cynical town…I don’t know I’m probably way off, but who knows!

  • littlepark

Oh. One song I liked and thought was interesting is a cover? I’m … disappointed. :(

  • meme

OMG I didn’t realize that z99.5 did the interview. Indianapolis loves our Idols. :exclaim_ee:

  • smartcookie

Ooooh, loving that sample of Bar-ba-sol.

  • hypertwink

I’m a little disappointed that Bar-ba-sol isn’t written by DC. But I do liked what He and Neal/Andy did to the original. Whereas Injected got all angsty, David sounded snarky (especially with the perked up melody).

  • waffle

On the EW interview – good questions, great answers! Once again, I’m in awe of his personality and character that can’t help but shine through when given the chance to speak. David is certainly very articulate and he organizes his thoughts so well. I swear, everytime he opens his mouth, whether to sing or answer questions, makes me proud to be his fan. :)

  • Mia

Bar-ba-sol is David’s song now. So much better. I loved the whole idea of him asking an Indy band and working his magic on a song that did not have much going for it.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I’m liking that Bar ba sol!

  • cheese

Bar-Ba-Sol is a really cool song. I have to say I prefer David’s more manic sounding version of it, but listening to the whole CD, I guess it should have been obvious that this one probably wasn’t his. I think we all thought that Light On was the only song he didn’t write.

I don’t mind him doing a cover of a fairly obscure song from a fairly obscure band. I would be disappointed if he had put something from AI on his album.

  • cookcricket

A great songwriter (I know he hasn’t been proven to be great yet…) shows his smarts when he chooses and covers another great song.

I really liked it and I think it will be sooo much better when we hear DC’s full version. I could hear the difference already in the little snippet.

  • leome

I really like that original. Smart move to get it… It may very well be the best song in the album.

  • wordnerdarchie

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mind him doing a cover of a fairly obscure song from a fairly obscure band. I would be disappointed if he had put something from AI on his album

I need something explained. When is something considered a cover? I ask that because Injected never released the song on a CD, so wouldn’t David’s recorded and released version be considered the original? (I think David talked about a demo.)

Could someone more knowledgeable about the music world please weigh in on this subject. This song has been discussed at DCO and people were wondering if DC would get co-writing credit for changing it (if that’s what happened).

    http://www.injectedfans.com/music.html

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

This song has been discussed at DCO and people were wondering if DC would get co-writing credit for changing it (if thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what happened).

I just heard from someone who compared both songs (has heard Cook’s album) and says Cook’s version is more polished, but that the versions are nearly identical. If there are any differences, they are probably due to Cook’s phrasing.

If Cook did take the song and change it, he could get co-writing credit.

  • Deejay

Well, it does sounds like Dave changed some of the words from the original version… I look forward to comparing the final product to this Injected demo because I have to say, it’s one awesome song.

Color me surprised, though. It really sounded like something he could have written, although it stood out in style from most of the song samples. Just shows yet again how good he is at finding songs that suit him, as he did on AI.

  • waffle

I, too, would appreciate some clarity on the issue of covers. Would “Light On” be considered a cover as well? I’m thinking that, most likely, a demo was also sent to DC to consider if he would want to record the song for his album.

  • wordnerdarchie

I just assumed that if a song was never released, when done by another artist it would not be a cover. All of the songs in the song writing contest were recorded as demo’s, the release is considered the original recording. Correct? So the same would hold true for Light On and Bar Ba Sol. They would not be covers. A lot of songs have demo copies made when sent to singers for consideration for them to record. If selected for use, they would be original recordings and not covers. Right? Or am I wrong.

  • sherryw

Kudos to Cook for giving such intelligent answers. He is all kinds of awesome. I’m sure he is aware that LO is underperforming and that the general public has moved on, so this promo period can’t be all that easy. I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to promote this album for him. The lack of radio response and the second-tier release schedule make it rather doubtful that RCA will put much effort into a second single. That is a shame because from the snippets I have heard, damn near every other song on the album will be better than LO.
Perhaps Sony will start treating him with some more care, but as of right now, a second album looks doubtful.

  • mac

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m liking that Bar ba sol!

Me too! I freakin love that song. I don’t care whether David wrote it or not. it is a great song!!!!!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Perhaps Sony will start treating him with some more care, but as of right now, a second album looks doubtful.

Sherry, his first album hasn’t even been released yet. Honestly, I think it’s impossible to make a prediction like that at this point. I mean, knock yourself out with the doom and gloom, but I think I’ll postpone the dire predictions until I see the album numbers.

  • FolkFan

You know, sherryw, a lot of us have responded to your various posts ovver the last several months predicting DC’s imminent demise. Instead of responding to you, I will merely say that I disagree with your conclusion and then let DC’s grounded statement from the EW article be the remainder of the response:

It must be hard to have perspective on what really happened with the show, even this far out from it now.
It’s strange. I don’t feel inherently that there’s a justification for it. I realize that a lot of people watch the show, and I get the idea of the celebrity aspect of it, I guess. But I still feel like that awkward musician; I think I always will. That’s a huge component of me staying kind of humbled and grounded about the whole thing: I get the flimsiness of it. I get that it could all go away. I mean, fame is fleeting….But I’m at peace. I’ve got guys that I’m playing with that I love to death, and I’m playing music that I think we all really get into, and as long as we’ve got that and a place to play, I’m good.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I will merely say that I disagree with your conclusion and then let DCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s grounded statement from the EW article be the remainder of the response:

    Good stuff.

You know peeps, I think we should avoid the inevitable dogpile and just leave it at Folkfan’s perfect response.

In other words, let’s move on…

  • john_socal

yippee. MJ finally likes one of David’s songs!

  • JOJOSIE

I’m from a whole different generation than most of you so I have a hard time with this current trend where lots of people feel singers have to write their own music. Actors don’t write their scripts, you can read someone elses poetry and feel it. In my day no one cared who wrote the songs as long as they were good songs and sang with feeling. I still feel that way. Good music brings out feelings no matter who wrote it if the artist connects. I love some original music , I love some covers even more. I think there are very talented singers who can’t play instruments and talented singers who can’t really write good music. As long as they do their part and sing the crap out of the song I really don’t care, but that’s just me. I would have been fine with David having several covers on his record but I’m sure it’ll be a great recording anyway he does it as I really like his voice.

  • elisad

It’s not a cover, otherwise any non-singer/songwriter artist would be considered a cover artist LOL. Oh I’m loving it. I can imagine David’s version, I’m good at this, deep down inside I know what his I’ll Be sounds like HAHA. LOVE.

What an awesome day! Apparently that interview will in the next issue of EW, love it, made of win. Finally someone asks some real questions. Aw that Twilight dude…that OST is GREAT especially the Blue Foundation song, but that album’s cover is just…wrong LOL.

I still think Mr. Sensitive is about Idol. He’s been saying Idol was like an “out of body” experience for a long time. Tim Burton? Yes, very, Big Fish.

The USO tour news is unbelievable. I mean I just don’t believe it. Epic, Sir, EPIC.

ETA: This is not the first time David goes to Carrie’s concert, hee he likes her.

I heart Neal too, FLOVE, after I heard he produced David’s second solo album. And he’s an amazing songwriter, and he’s cute. And I Love his coldness heehee. It’s a Capricorn thing.

  • sma11ie

Wow, I LOVE the Bar-ba-sol demo! It just needs a little polish, but I may have to check out Injected now. DC’s always turning me to new music, awesome! I don’t care that it’s not his. I’m glad to see that DC is humble enough to recognize that his best work is not done on his own, and that collaborations, interpreting others’ songs, etc. can yield great things. I’m glad he got to use those major label resources and not just make Analog Heart 2.0 (did he really make AH on 1 grand or was that hyperbole?)

So many great responses from DC in that article:

I watched that one and I watched my week 1 performance of ”Happy Together” by the Turtles, just to see the absurd transition. It was night and day, man. I changed more during the four and a half months on that show than I changed the 25 years prior.

That just makes me smile, because I’m like, yes, we know, we were right there with you during that progression, and it was awesome to watch, as a viewer. I guess that encapsulates why I’m so invested in DC unlike any other musician– it sounds cliche/hyperbolic, but for the first time IMO, AI has given its viewers this gift to quite literally see a star be born.

Neal has an idea where my head is at musically, so it was nice to have somebody in the studio, when I wasn’t there, who spoke for me and spoke accurately….I’m still kind of in awe of it.

Aw, I heart Neal. Doesn’t hurt that he’s a badass guitar player either. I’m just glad DC got people in his band he trusts.

  • cookcricket

The USO tour news is unbelievable. I mean I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe it. Epic, Sir, EPIC.

This is so like him to go entertain the troops! OMG, I can’t help but think LO will be so well received there! I’m so proud, as always, to be a fan!

  • daenarys

….But I’m at peace. I’ve got guys that I’m playing with that I love to death, and I’m playing music that I think we all really get into, and as long as we’ve got that and a place to play, I’m good.

Love this. As long as you’ve got all that, we’re at peace and we’re good too, David.

  • ShariG

Awesome interview on EW and also on the radio. How sweet that he called his dad after recording Permanent. I am so impressed with how close he seems with both of his parents though divorce and living in separate states and all. It is a testament to his mom and dad, but also to him as a person. Very good news that the radio audience overwhelmingly liked Light On. I am still just not getting why it is new. The MIX in Chicago plays it during new music hour also. Seems to me they are just behind.

  • ShariG

I’m sorry, but could the Indianapolis guy have known less about David? Seems to me he should have done a little bit of homework. How could he not know where David is from or when the album is going to be released. David was gracious as ever. At least they played Light On, so I guess I can’t fault him too much.

  • Dlynne

Thank you for the Bar Ba Sol link. It’s a great song. I can’t wait to hear David sing the whole thing.

One thing I’ve noticed is that he gives GREAT radio interviews. Some of the best info has come from them, even if the DJ is sometimes clueless.

  • stephen

edit: I asked that the subject be dropped. Please don’t lecture your fellow posters. Read my guidelines before you post again. Thank you.

ETA: This is not the first time David goes to Carrieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s concert, hee he likes her.

Two American Idol winners. Mmmm, just thinking out loud here, but maybe David and Carrie could hook up, get married and then have little Idol babies!

  • Deejay

edit: please don’t criticize or mock your fellow posters. Thank you.

Still listening to the awesomeness that is Bar-ba-sol!

  • sunchick

Yay, Covergate III…the legend continues. I keed. Okay, so does this sound right: A bed track is basically music sans lyrics and a melody, and a demo is a rough version of a complete song with lyrics and a melody. The finished product can differ from the demo to varying degrees. Yes? So, from what we heard and comparing lyrics, it seems like the Bar Ba Sol demo has been Cookified. THe exact extent of the Cookification, if any, will be subjective to the listener and open to debate. ( I have to admit much of what I know about songwriting I learned via the songwriting clinic on Rock Star:INXS and the controversy surrounding the cowriting credits of Pretty Vegas, so, giant grain of a salt and all that.) Another question..I’ve seen the Injected version referred to as Spun Again. Did David and his faboo entourage of creative awesomeness (otherwise known as Neal, Andy, and Rob Cavallo) rename it, or was it renamed before it came to them? Anyone, anyone, Bueller…

I come back to the by line of the article…I just think this record is me. A song about the pains of reinvention with a shaving cream title on an album by the guy who got a huge kick out of those “he doesn’t even shave” girls on Youtube? That’s some coincidink no matter how it happened, is all I’m sayin. And ha, the story surrounding Mr. Sensitive complete with Burton reference…awesome. Tim Burton is made of win in general and Burton fans are always finding recurrent themes in his movies that might be autobiographical in a weird round about way. Characters plagued by loneliness/alienation/being misunderstood/not fitting in, yada yada, those kind of themes are associated with Burton like, oh, say, being branded Mr. Sensitive is associated with Cook. I think he should be as vague and confusing as possible when talking about this song, and then maybe it will be his Hotel California and people will still be debating the true meaning twenty years from now. :tongue_rolleye_ee:

  • Deejay

The song is listed on that Injected fan website with both names:

Here is a list of songs recorded for The Truth About You, in no particular order (with working title in parathesis):

  • Michelle

So still wondering about the James and the Giant Peach reference, and having last read it when I was about 10, I went to refresh myself on the plot over at wiki. Wow, that was one hella trippy story… Is it stretching to suggest the potion= his earlier music career? The peach = Idol?

“Among the things they encounter before reaching the city are a swarm of sharks and air-elemental creatures called Cloud Men, who are responsible for painting rainbows.”

He’s this mix of earnest and thoughtful and weird and silly, and it’s irresistable :) I can’t help but want to try and figure it all out.

And then I’m sure that was some throwaway reference that I just put 10x as much thought into as he did. But it’s fun!

but maybe David and Carrie could hook up, get married and then have little Idol babies!

…a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll? :D Sorry, couldn’t help it.

I’m liking Bar-ba-sol, the original flavor…but I love what David did with it in the snippet, sort of swaggered it up even more. The little change to “Oh, where I’ve been/sold and spun again” takes it back into Idol-experience territory imo. I think it’s gonna be one of my faves on the album.

  • LK08

Mac, funny you say that about Cook and Carrie. That is what the DJ said around Halloween when David Archuleta and Jordan were at the Boo Bash. He said that they were in the back room and that they could have idol babies.

I was struck by him saying how nervous he was before his SNL performance. I can’t even imagine the pressure on these idols, especially on him to perform and deliver. I expect it will get much easier when they have done it a few times in various places, especially when these new songs feel more comfortable.

  • stephen

David Cook is generally not nervous about performing. He doesn’t suffer from traditional stage fright and his comfort level actually goes up with big crowds. Rocking an arena was kind of home for him. But there are situations that rattle him a little. The SSB at the NBA finals (esp. with Jack Nicholson staring at him) and then SNL are the two that seem to have made him nervous. SNL was is first time out with his new band (not counting the trial run at The Viper room). He’s the 100% top dog for the first time… with Axium he had long time buddies as co-founders. MWK he took a back seat. Idol he was managed and handled by producers. The tour had him taking the leadership role and headlining, but even he admitted they all found it unnerving that when it ended, they were on their own. So here he is, a band that’s just 6 weeks old, with him singing a very difficult song that’s just 4 weeks old (Light On), for the first time live. And it happens to be on a highly promoted, highly publicized, highly anticipated SNL – an NBC institution. A television institution. And yet Cook did what the very best pros do… he got on stage, tuned out the distractions, and focused on the job at hand – the music, and hit it out of the park. You could see by the time he did Declaration that the nerves were pretty much gone. The man has never backed down from a challenge. He’s freakin’ gutsy and puts himself out there. It always pays off for him in spades.

Boston Herald – David Cook, The Grungiest Idol

As heavy – at least compared with Aiken – as Daughtry is, Cook may be heavier. Most of the record is pretty generic stuff akin to his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ peers as influenced by Audioslave, Creed and other bland bands. But it undoubtedly rocks: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bar-ba-solà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has a metallic crunch unheard in any of Simon Cowellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s other offspring.

  • elisad

Someone on Australian Idol sang Billie Jean again. Oh people, stop trying.

  • CathyMK

That Boston Herald article is kind of bizarre, like the author felt he didn’t even need to listen to DC’s record to critique it. It’s mostly about other Idols, and there’s nothing very specific about the actual music. Ah well, I suppose this is only the first of the snobbish reviews from big city newspapers. Those types of reviews didn’t seem to affect the tour much, so I’m not going to worry about it.

The 30 second sample of Bar-Ba-Sol has been stuck in my head all evening. Need David’s full version ASAP!

ETA: Uh-oh- I didn’t hear anyone on Australian Idol mention Chris Cornell OR David Cook. Do you suppose they’ll team up to make a big fuss about it? LOL ;0)

  • Deejay

I love how that guy didn’t just use the Chris Cornell version…he also borrowed David’s AI performance arrangement down to the modulated glory note toward the end. It was good all-in-all, but unfortunately, we heard/saw David’s first, and he can’t belt it or sell it like David can.

  • elisad

Oops, okey I was wrong. It’s not the interview that’s in EW, but a Very nice article. He played at the Viper Room before? Wow.

  • stephen

CathyMK I agree, that was a bizarre article in the Boston Herald. I found this particularly mean:

Taylor Hicks would probably take offense at this, if he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t busy cutting a ribbon at a Wal-Mart somewhere in Alabama.

I don’t think the writer really listened to the album, nor is a rock fan. I’m not sure what point of any significance he is
trying to make. Idol peers? I don’t get it. He says Cook is different because he’s a rocker on the “heavy” side but then compares him to “all the rest.” Makes no sense. I’ve dismissed it. And I don’t live in Boston.

  • redridinghood

I’m not sure I liked that article at the printed EW. His attitude is more cocky than in the one online. I want people to like him. Oh well, his album will speak for itself once it’s out. (although I’m one of those that find it difficult to overcome my dislike for an artist)

  • daenarys

But I really love the printed EW article! From his mischevious ribbing of Kyle the Animal (LOL) in the beginning, through all his blunt and honest insecurities and shortcomings, and then his simple pride in what was achieved in that hellish timeline (like he said:

“It’s not being cocky – it’s my kid”

I get what he means completely. If a parent is proud of their baby, is that cocky? My mom calls it love and pride. No matter how I do in life or how I stack up against anyone else, I’ll always be her baby. Hee. What he said. Love it.

  • hypertwink

I didn’t find it cocky but then again, I’m one of the few who said WTF?! Simon when he accused Cookie of being smug. I like the snapshots that we see of him: fun, serious, insecure…

  • Deejay

I like the printed EW article, too.

  • redridinghood

Ok, so I guess it’s just the first part (where he calls the drummer b—- ) and the end part that I don’t like. But still :(

Since he’s going to the USO tour, does that mean he’s not gonna drop by the philippines like he mentioned before?

  • Deejay

That’s understandable. I’m not fond of the profanity, but I know he’s kidding, so I let it go… I see how someone who knows little to nothing about him could be thrown off by parts of the article, though.

  • daenarys

Growing up in a male dominated family, that’s just the way they roll.

    You’re at work, b****!

is actually (believe it or not, LOL!) a term of endearment! It’s like we gals saying: “We have to get going, sweetie” *giggles*. They would NEVER say that sort of thing to women (at least the good guys), but will not hesitate to unleash it to their male object of affection!

  • elisad

Oh, we girls say bitch instead of sweetie as well, LOL.

  • daenarys

    Affectionately? *ducks for cover!*

Have a feeling the article is aimed squarely at the Y chromosomes.
And the pics are aimed at the XYs (hope I haven’t screwed the science here!).

  • bluejeans

Eh, lol. I call my girl friends bitches all the time. Not in a mean way, a term of endearment. I would only do that to my CLOSE friends though. Even in his old myspace blogs he talked like that. I love that side of him, actually. I’ve been missing it. But I’m one of those who floved his Creep’s intro and I understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. :)

Love the part about the record being his baby. AW.

  • sunchick

    Affectionately? *ducks for cover!*

You bet your sweet ass, honey! No need to duck for cover, though. Let’s hug it out, bitch! Seriously, though, Entourage? Massive catchphrase, says the pop culture junkie. I don’t think the word bitch is all that provocative anymore.

    But Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m one of those who floved his Creepà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s intro and I understand that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not everyoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cup of tea. :)

Is it okay if we play a cover? Heh. I would like to thank EW for the mental image of David standing on the Viper Room stage, soaking it in, and flipping that old A&R dude the bird. God love him. This is my favorite article to date. It embraces the conundrum that is Cook: a really sweet, goofy, down to earth guy who’s fully aware that he’s the reigning American Idol but also a very proud man and serious about his music, a guy who likes to occasionally rock his face off with introspective lyrics that are not the typical ode to testosterone that usually accompany the phrase “rock his face off.” Best example of that to date is the Axium song AC. It’s a hard rockin sound with lyrics that grab your heart. Sounds like this record will have a little piece of that Dave, which makes me happy because I think AC is brilliant, if not easily marketable. (My sig O and I have this running joke that most of the songs on his favorite classic rock station are about one of five things : chicks/sex, rocking out, being a badass, alcohol/drugs, or being ticked off. Seriously, there’s one song they play wherein I swear the only lyrics are shotgun…and flaa aaa ammes. ) I like how the Daughtry reference is approached in that EW piece…cautiously, because yes Daughtry is the only touchstone for post-AI rock sucess yet Cook is a completely different animal. I hope radio is ready for him, I really do, and I hope his label knows what to do with him. Time will tell, though. Walks off humming “how do you solve a problem like Coookie…”

”There is this one video on YouTube that I’ve gotten into a habit of…well, not a habit, but I’ve [watched] it a couple of times. It’s these early-teen girls watching the finale, and they filmed themselves, and they’re all Archuleta fans, which is fun. My name gets announced [as the winner], and the girls just lose it. It’s painful to watch in that sense, because obviously I don’t want to feel like I’m upsetting anybody. But these girls said something that’s so funny, to me: ”How could they vote for that guy? He doesn’t even shave!” I love that.

LOL! He’s seen that video? I watch it all the time for a good laugh. Dang! I need to watch it again. LOL!

Actually, there’s one of a preteen who totally loses it when David Cook wins. She’s so excited…even mutters under her breath “Watch Archuleta win….” He should watch that to balance it out.

If that Boston Herald review is the worst thing that we see from a critic, I’d be pleased. It may not be a glowing review, but it does suggest that it is a real rock record and a sign that rock is back. I’ll take it.

Thx for posting the EW article. Should be interesting to see how the EW review comes out.

My friends and I (guys and girls) call each other bitch all the time, so I’m cool with that. That said, I have to agree with redridinghood…

His attitude is more cocky than in the one online. I want people to like him.

The part that bothers me is that I’ve seen his banter on stage, and it’s great because even when he jokes about how he used to play at that club down the street, or being turned down by band auditions or whatever, you can tell right away that he’s not being cocky because of his delivery. What I don’t like about Chris Willman is I’m just not a fan of his writing. I don’t think the way he described the Viper Room banter did DC any favors, and I have a gut feeling it came off much better in person.

I liked the online version better because it was mostly Q&A so Willman couldn’t screw up, and I’ll grant that he had good questions, but even there, I found his intro paragraph to be a drag to read. He just doesn’t do a good job capturing the essence of DC and why he’s so likeable, even when he’s got good material, IMO. The Wayne Isham gushing and DC joking about being an A-hole– I just didn’t think he wrote that part well, with the abrupt transition between DC “demurring” and the subsequent joke– I want to know how he demurred first! I dunno, I hate to go on a rant, but Willman’s writing irks me– it’s flowery and unnecessary:

he man doth protest too much…Cook proves unflappably affable, all promises of diva fits to the contrary… the singer is proving quite sanguine under pressure

Even when he’s nice about DC, he’s not convincing any haters because he sounds like he’s just fawning when uses nice words without backing it up. Stop telling and show, dammit! Okay, end rant on writing, haha.

Have a feeling the article is aimed squarely at the Y chromosomes.

No kidding. Most of the David-Cook-related-comments on EW and TVGuide reviews of SNL were from guys generally saying, I can’t believe that guy won American Idol! They’re pretty good. Trying to cut the apron strings, I presume.

And the pics are aimed at the XYs (hope I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t screwed the science here!).

    XY=Male
    XX=Female
    YY=Dead

I’m guessing you mean article aimed at the XYs and pics at the XXs?

This quote has endeared Cook to me a little. I also love to stay up at night alone and watch videos of early-teen girls crying. They weep and weep, and I love that.

^Can anyone post a link to the video he’s talking about?

  • daenarys

Thanks Kirsten, that’s what I meant. Pretty sure that Bar-ba-sol could wake up the YYs though…..

Aaaw, I really wish we could get a hold of the Viper Room sessions. That is one gold-plated Cookie crumb.

    And sunchick:

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hug it out, bitch!

I tried that line on some friends. There was dead silence for 4 seconds (I counted), and they just started howling and gasping!! LMAO. Uh oh, I think it’s catching.

  • FolkFan

If it was friends and family only, that would explain why there have been no leaks. I couldn’t believe that, if it was just a show-up, that no one would have identified him and videotaped the performance for youtube posting.

  • Deejay

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think the word bitch is all that provocative anymore.

I still flinch when I hear it, but I’m in the minority.

    Thanks for finding the link!

I guess the Boston Herald is saying even though it’s generic rock, they think it will be a big hit. Or rock is coming back because Cook won Idol. It’s kind of tough to figure out. So it looks like Declaration will be the second single.

I’m interested to see how the Cook promo pans out. Its sort of a two pronged attack establishing rock cred and pushing the hottie thing for the ladies. It’s a little tough to pull off because usually the males buying this music aren’t into the sexy guy stuff.

I wish more males posted here. I’d love to hear their take on Cook’s album.

  • Trina

Couple of new interviews this morning with Mix in Chicago and Z104. Nothing really earthshattering but he bought a Lexus ha!! Declaration he co-wrote with Johnny Rzeznik. Here’s the Mix interview. Yes to “Declaration” for next single please!

I love that EW print interview. It touches on some very good points and it sounds like they realize it may be tough to establish rock cred while catering to the AI fanbase. I agree upthread the article targets the male demo while the pictures are more targeted to women.

  • CathyMK

I think it’s more that they don’t like guys who are pretty-boys, which David is in no danger of. He’s not all glossy and overly groomed like he’s in some boy band. Most frontmen for popular rock bands end up being sex symbols, no matter what they look like. Take Mick Jagger as an example. I’ve always thought he’s ugly as hell, but even in his 60′s, he’s got women screaming for him. The Rolling Stones have always been popular with guys too, to say the least. As long as a rock singer as seen as masculine (whatever the current version of that is with young guys), attractive to women, and sings music guys like, he’ll be admired and looked up to by other guys. Sort of another version of the alpha male thing.

I listened to the Mix interview. I’m so glad the host, Eric didn’t get him confused with Archie. He did that about a month ago after they play TOML. But He was annoying as he always, he was talking over Cook, like he does everyone. But I that my little beef with that show. Sorry

  • FolkFan

It’s hard to do that sort of conversation over the phone. When you do conference calls, people inevitably talk over each other, particularly if they don’t know each other’s speech patterns. So, I’d give the deejay a bit of leeway on that.

  • http://www.myspace.com/veronique0882 llamacook

Normally I would, it’s just that morning show drives me nuts. And it’s the only station that plays music I like. So I know I should deal.

  • FolkFan

BTW, as someone who has always been amused by llamas (I totally blame Sesame Street), I love your userid, llamacook.

I agree! I thought it had some really good things to say! The first line was awesome! IMO. Maybe I’m missing something….

    Reset your coundowns guys.

    Wwwwhat’s today’s date? The 13th can.not. come soon enough!

So much to read, watch and listen to…I’ll have to come back later. Thanks EVERYONE for posting.

  • sunchick

I’m not sure it’s the rock cred factor and the sex symbol factor that might have difficulty coexisting. Rock is often pretty sexy. I think it’s the rock cred factor and the nice, accessible, family loving, heart on his sleeve Midwestern boy factor that are going to be a bit of a sticky wicket to reconcile. Can RCA successfully market a senstive rocker who is musically equally influenced by Temple of the Dog’s Hunger Strike and Collective Soul’s The World I Know? Well, people seemed to dig Cook’s take on Hello well enough, so maybe it’s crazy enough that it just might work. The thing Cook has going in his favor, IMO, is that I don’t get the impression that he’s you know like a dog constantly straining at his old AI leash. I think he really is all of those things and if the record buying public can dig it, he’s golden.

I agree. OMG. Thanks for the link to that video. I have never seen that before! That is just hilarious. How over the top are tween fans? LOL. Geesh, was I ever like that? Probably…but it was too long ago to remember!

The big if is the public beyond AI.

  • kathrynTX

Radio interviews are lovely, print interviews are lovely, photos are LOVELY! He IS golden. The Golden Goober from the Midwest Who Won The Lottery…and can SANG like nobody else. And who is talented, smart, witty, kind, sensitive…oh sorry, was I getting OT and/or fangirly? Heeheehee…LOLOLOLOL more like it!

Come on, he’s a GUY, a 25 year old man who just made the big time after working towards it for 10 years. He’s incredibly talented and smart, but he’s still just a regular GUY. Did we all think he never spoke a curse word? Well, I didn’t think that about him. And it doesn’t put me off one bit. Probably the opposite effect – makes me feel like he’s more like ME, ordinary weirdo that I am.

I have no idea what radio will do with Cook. I haven’t heard Light On on ANY of the )#(*$)#( stations I attempt to listen to in hopes. Even though it was on their front page banners online, NO hear-y song yet, oh dumba** stations. SOOOO I will bring along my own music, thank you. I keep hearing all kinds of songs on this AC/HOT AC station and I think “Light On could come before or after THAT….” But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I do know that I’m buying whatever he’s selling. Oh gotta go shoe shopping! Look, something shiny…listen, it’s David Cook, gotta go!
