David Cook

David Cook performs “Time of My Life” on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno as part of their summer concert series. It was untelevised, but he also performed “My Hero” as a tribute to one of his favorite artists, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. You can see that performance later this morning on the Tonight Show website. Check this site out beginning at around 3:30 am.

  • Trina

SQUEE that’s the Cookie I know and love! That was awesome! Loved the tee shirt, too. I prefer that look much more to the blazers he’s been sporting at all his appearances.

  • cooktard76

God I love that man. That being said….

Abigail Breslin = fangirl. How cute!

The Mariska Hargitay shirt was cute.

    I love Cookie in a t-shirt.period.

As for the performance: He looked so relaxed/happy, awesomeness. Cant get enough of the mic stand love. He hit the glory note. TWICE! Return of the swagger I’ve been missing? Thank you Mr. Cook for that.

The best part? The wink. Indeed.

And lastly, this has been by far my favorite post-Idol performance yet. I like it better than Walmart. The rocked out version of TOML is simply.the.best. He brought it 2nite!

  • Jolene

Awesome stuff right there! How I’ve missed a well rested, joyful Cookie! This performance just screams “I was meant to sing in front of people”. Love DC.
Now I can’t wait for that other video to turn up. Countdown anyone? How long do we have to wait? (I’m in a different time zone, can’t figure out what 3:30 am is compared to NOW).

  • Lisa

    And he’s back! Loved it!

I also loved Hero, different version than the one he did in KC.

Hero is up at Leno site now…

  • Jolene

Hero is up at Leno site nowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Wow. Thanks for the heads up Lisa! Off to watch!

  • Trina

Oh my gosh! My Hero – I have no words. Cookie was on fire tonight!

  • skylight1219

I liked the little smile when he sang the words, “Magic Rainbow.” LOL

  • lovegoodmusic

It was such a relief to see happy David again. Welcome back David Cook!
    Bravo!

  • http://randomlyyoursbouffe.blogspot.com/ Bouffe

Cookie was hot! Cooking was rocking! Cookie brought it!

This was so great – TOML was really nice with the band, and Cook’s voice was great on it. He looked so happy! And “My Hero”? WOO HOO! A bit, tiny bit disappointed it was not that gorgeous version he played at his homecoming, but still, it totally rocked. DC was on FIRE tonight!

  • voteDC

Finally, no black jacket but a simple and relaxed tee. Happy happy!

  • jan

He looks so happy singing My Hero – the energy is back.

  • AInoob

Great performances! And Abigail Breslin’s quick turnaround from being bummed over her lost iPod to saying “David Cook is here!” was so cute, lol.

After seeing My Hero I can tell why Cookie was so pumped during his performance of TOML. He just wanted to rock out, not sing a ballad!

David was sporting one of those shirt’s he’s been wearing under the sports jacket in his pre-performance interview but fortunately he changed into the gray t-shirt – what a pleasure seeing him wear a color again (even if it was only gray).

  • Layla

Hee! Hee! Had to watch my boy TWICE before I could even comment!!!!
You RAWK DC!! That was awesome. He looked so happy and worked that stage! I bet he is going to be fuckin’ awesome on the tour.

The swagger, oh yeah the swagger….

  • Layla

I too wanted the beautiful acoustic version of “My Hero” but am quite satisfied with the rocked out version-bloody great! Tee-shirt and vest- oh yeah!
    I. love.him.

  • Jenn_AI Fan

Those were both great performances (although the mix was a bit off with ToML). Great energy, spot-on vocals, fun with the guitar….

I think that he’s trying to set a new record for different versions of Idol Coronation Song done by one person. There’s been at least 5 now, no?

  • Dlynne

I can’t wipe the smile off of my face…and I really don’t want to. That was fabulous. He’s back!

  • Trina

Who said we were going to have Cookie withdrawal?
    http://abc.go.com/latenight/jimmykimmel/index?pn=upcomingguests&t=0&d=113163#t=0
Jimmy Kimmel’s primetime special this coming Sunday. GO COOKIE!

  • weelassie

Those performances were amazing and he looked like he was having a ball.

  • Jolene

Jimmy Kimmelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s primetime special this coming Sunday. GO COOKIE!

I’m doing a happy dance right here! How awesome is that?! No Cookie withdrawal for us, the boy is all over the television and magazine stands! LOVE IT!

As for tonight, after watching “My Hero”, I’m just so thrilled. I missed David just having fun on stage, and not holding himself back in any way, and that was really one molten hot lava bomb. Oh, and have I mentioned the *arms*?
Guh, it was just plain fantastic. TOML too.
    Happy happy. Really happy.

  • Layla

Can anyone tell me where to find DC’s backstage interview on Leno?

  • Jolene

Can anyone tell me where to find DCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s backstage interview on Leno?

    Here it is: DC interview
Loved the interview too. Loved everything about this Leno thing, pretty much.
I need an mp3 of his version of “My Hero”. Anyone?

  • JudyOhio

Just saw the video on The Tonight Show site of “My Hero.” Very, very good! Way to go Cook!

  • Layla

Thanks again Jolene. Got your post on Rickey’s blog.

Loved the relaxed interview. He looked so rested and centered. Think I’ll wander off and watch the two performances again…makes me feel that I’m at a DC concert.

  • sherryw

    OK, now THAT was awesome!!!
    Go Cookie Go!
I have loved the Foo Fighters forever (loved Dave Grohl since he was Nirvana’s drummer) and DC’s “My Hero” tonight honestly rivals Dave’s. It was that good.
He looked and sounded like a star. Fabulous Cookie is back in full force!
    A few things I noted:
1.) The range of ages and genders in the audience (I believe that is what is meant by “broad appeal”)
2.) The men in the audience who looked rather blah during TOML were totally rocking with MH.
3.) DC knows how to work the crowd. I loved it when he motioned for them to put their arms up and clap and they followed direction like good little minions!

Welcome back DC (not that I’m completely sure he ever really went anywhere).

Now, if I could just hear that first “real” single from the album…..
I’m sure I will flove it….just. must. be. patient. What a shame I wasn’t born with that virtue.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

I love him beyond all reason!

And I love that he has “Marishka Hargatay” on his tee shirt.

  • Thea

Now THIS is David Cook!!! *broad smile*

I was lucky enough to hear MH last week live (Wembley- 86,000 people screaming it with David Grohl…) and… well, I won’t go so far as to say they’re on the same level, because they’re not, but Cookie sounds like a rock star. That’s all I’m sayin’.

I look forward to his record, but even more to when he will finally tour with his own music. I have a feeling he’s going to be one of those acts that sound even better live (like Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam…) – and i love that.

    I need an mp3 of his version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Heroà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Anyone?

    My Hero mp3
    Magic Rainbow mp3

I understand they are compliments of the DC.org peeps. ;)

  • Thea

    Thanks purplesmile!

I wonder how many versions of Magic Rainbow is it considered acceptable to have on one’s ipod…

  • bluejeans

Yay Swagger! I’ve missed it so much. As much as I love acoustic Dave, I love rock star Dave even more. *swoon*

Btw, that audience has no life. C’mon people, move a little!

  • http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

I understand these are the “cleaner” versions (by the same person who uploaded the others) to download… :)

    My Hero
    TOML

  • Jolene

I understand these are the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“cleanerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ versions (by the same person who uploaded the others) to download

    Thank you, purplesmile!
I am now officially addicted to Cookie’s “My Hero”.
Could he just cover every song there is? Is that possible? Because I like his version better than the original on pretty much everything he does.
Damn. I need some Cookie rehab.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

was nice to see rocking cookie :) ty for the clips mj and purple:)
i can’t wait for his album
i’m still wearing out my idol7 tunes and analog heart lol

  • Jovi

LOVED both performances. He is amazing. I wish the Tour was coming to Maine. :(

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

How’s that for charisma, Nigel??? Huh? Huh?

  • gingerly

I wonder how many versions of Magic Rainbow is it considered acceptable to have on oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ipodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

As many as will fit as long as he keeps changing it up which I believe as a true artist he will do.

Love the interview. Love the songs. Love the voice. Love the man!!! I’m happy :wub_tb:

  • grrrr

“My Hero”? Hellooooo, nurse! I hope that’s the 5th song on his tour setlist because that would be awesome to see live.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

Dude!!! How cool would it be if he did this song on the tour!

    Dave Grohl are you watching?

Can he open for Dave Grohl one of these days? Is that acceptable? I don’t know from band etiquette.

  • Thea

Here in the UK Jimmy Page “opened” for Dave Grohl…. I’m afraid DC is not there yet….but he will be!!! :jittery_tb:

  • hollygo9

aw, anyone have the files in a format other than sendspace? I can’t access that at work and I’m dying to hear My Hero.

  • AInoob

And I love that he has à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Marishka Hargatayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on his tee shirt.

I’ve seen a few people mention this, can someone tell me what the significance (if there is any) is? Isn’t she an actress?

I’m hopeful that maybe Cookie will get his wish and be able to work with Dave Grohl at some point in his career, them being on the same label can maybe work in his favor for that.

  • k4dc

“Marishka Hargatay” (who is an actress) was what Mike Meyer’s character “The Love Guru” kept saying (a salutation, I guess) during his skit during the Idol finale.

I LOVED “My Hero”!!!!!!! That is the David I know and love. I loved the energy! As I watched it I started crying, knowing how absolutely AWESOME he’s going to be in concert. Wow! This man turns me into a silly, crying, drooling fangirl at the drop of a hat!!! It’s insane. And I love him for it!! :)

  • Trina

That interview on the NBC site is great! I really liked what he said about feeling like RCA was the right fit. I’m confused about the exchange where he makes it sound like RCA is Simon’s label. I didn’t get that at all.

  • Thea

Hollygo9– you can go on the nbc site and find both songs + the interview

    Tonight Show

  • wfowfowfo

AInoob — it’s a reference back to the Love Guru — Mariska Hargitay is an actress — but Mike Myers uses her name as his chant or greeting — something like that I think.

Anyway — why my dearest and darling husband felt that watching the end of the Celtics game was more important than letting the DVR tape Leno last night is beyond me, so thanks MJ for the video and links. Much to his surprise, I didn’t freak out on him as I had all confidence in the world that you would have these up quickly. You.are.awesome.

(As are your readers — thanks for the links for the downloads — you all rock.)

    Go Celtics!

  • grrrr

    My Hero
    Magic Rainbow

Can he open for Dave Grohl one of these days? Is that acceptable? I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know from band etiquette.

Well, he certainly couldn’t find cooler touring mates than the Foo Fighters….

Mariska Hargitay is an actress à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ but Mike Myers uses her name as his chant or greeting à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ something like that I think.

Sort of like a malapropism of “namaste.”

  • AInoob

Aha! Thanks for ‘splaining the Mariska Hargitay thing.

Thanks for the Jimmy Kimmel link, Trina. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to catch it on Sunday but now I know to look for it either here or on youtube (fans are so good about uploading stuff so everyone can get their fix lol).

Did anyone catch the interview after the performance with John Melendez asking the fans what their most embarrassing moment was? Some seriously lame responses, but I got a kick out of seeing several men there, regardless of how the media keeps trying to pigeonhole Cook’s fanbase.

  • http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

    My Hero on youtube

Cook will be interviewed in a while at WTMX Chicago (live streaming) (in case anyone has not heard about this).

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Was he playing a different guitar…?

  • spanishfan

Gosh how good was My Hero. I think he is so great on stage. He comes alive. Also loved TOML. I would love to buy a physical copy. David would have been platinum if TPTB would let the International fans buy his single. Merely on the American fans he went nearly gold in 2 1-2 weeks. Absolutely love this guy. And what is more my hubby loves him too. Besides being a ladies Man, he is a Man ´s man too.

  • http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

David is on at WTMX now.

  • Jenn_AI Fan

He did the rock god guitar in the air move (twice, so maybe he needs to a second rock god guitar move to the repertoire).

It still cracks me up how pissy Simon got about the guitar in the air move during Daytripper, but then that clip ended up being a big part of the ads in the run-up to the finale. Heh.

  • Patchchat

Ya know what’s weird? I’m not a rock music fan. I’m not a hater — it’s just not my genre. But man…comin’ out of him? Let’s just say that rock music is growing on me. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t seeded a new appreciation of rock music in A LOT of people.

One benefit of not being familiar with this music is that I had no comparisons to make. The first time I’d heard Innocent or The World I Know or the song with “move” in the title or even this “My Hero” song was when David sang those songs. I liked them immediately.

Now…to last night! He was just great. Really. He was happy, relaxed, ready to have some fun and he just did what David does. (I volunteer to be a living mic stand!) Bet you’ll never guess what the first-ever rock album I’ll purchase will be. Go ahead — take a stab at it. :)

One last thing….Mariska Hargitay is and has been for a LONG LONG time my favorite actress on TV. I LOVE looking at her. There’s something about her. She plays this hard-edged cop when in fact, she is SUPREMELY goofy. Don’t mind givin’ her a shout out. She rocks.

Ooooh…look at me. I said “rocks.” Wait…one more time. David cooks RAWKS. I feel a change a-comin’! :)

  • nick

does anybody know who the guitar players behind david cook were on “my hero”?

  • kathrynTX

AAAGGGGHHHHHH that’s it…I died…on the floor. He killed me. Fan-f-ing-tabulous. Left it on the stage (as usual). How beautiful is he? WHERE did he come from? OK sorry FANGIRL here! Seriously, both the songs were just WONDERFUL. We still never know what he will do next, do we? And we LOVE it that way! He sounded really great, looked great, I bet he had an incredibly good time doing that! PATCHCHAT, I lost interest in rock for about 20 years. Cook has revived my rock-n-roll soul! OK he has revived ME, body & heart & soul! Too much to go into here but that’s the short story. Can’t wait to see you on the Idol tour (TWICE!) and even more so, on your solo tour, Mr Cook. Love to you, David Cook.

Damn, he KILLED that. My Hero was the best I’ve ever seen him as far as stage presence. It was like he was free to be as cocky as he wanted. Damn, he is sexxaayyy with balls. LOL.

  • IGetCranked

I don’t think I would like that song if anyone else sang it. He looks great!
    What’s next? The View?

OH Btw, I was in my car the other night and one of the stations did one of those fight outs between two songs and poor Dave got beat………….. by Miley Cyrus! *snick*

  • AInoob

I think before The View is Kimmel and the charity event. It scares me that I know this offhand.

  • aidc08

Thank you! Thank you! Cook is back! He is just so AMAZING…swoon…

Thanks to all of your for the videos and mp3. I have my Cookie fix for the weekend!

  • Jolene

David is on at WTMX now.

Did anyone hear it? That was a great, great interview. He was funny, relaxed and very upbeat. I think I fell for him just a little bit more.
If someone wants it, a kind soul on TWoP ripped it and you can download the interview here: http://www.mediafire.com/?xlbymdzdfbh

  • jpfan

Wow, I guess as a non-Cooktard I’m all alone out here.
If anyone wasn’t already a Cook fan nothing in that performance would have made them one. The crowd looked dead and he sounds like every rocker on the radio (minus the usual rocker charisma). I guess I’m not wearing the rose colored glasses because he didn’t look particulary “hot” either.

This is my opinion so no need to convince me of my wrong headed views. To me he’s another one of those winners who stands out because he’s “original” on the show. Off it, he doesn’t seem like a star to me at all. I’m starting to even doubt that he’ll sell the multi plat they seem to think he’ll move for them.

  • rockchalk

Wow. He was fantastic. He looked good, he sounded rested and awesome, he worked that stage as if his life depended on it…I am so excited to see some of the ol’ Cook swagger back. I am not sure how many times he is going to rework TOML, but I don’t care. That song has absolutely grown on me as he has put it through this “progression”. “My Hero” was incredible. Nice to see him rock out to a real rock song and sound like a pro doing it.

  • SpenserJ

If anyone wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t already a Cook fan nothing in that performance would have made them one.

Well, I’m already a Cook fan, and I do think he sounded really good. But…

    I guess Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not wearing the rose colored glasses because he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t look particulary à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hotà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ either.

yeah, I don’t ever get the hotness factor from him either. So, apparently it’s just my ears that are rose colored LOL.

    The crowd looked dead

Well, to be fair, Leno’s crowed is always dead. Mostly I think, because Leno is lame and not actually funny. :twisted_wp:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Regarding Hero: It was awesome to hear Cook sing an actual, you know, ROCK song. LOL. I’ll be a real happy camper if the music on his album is less magic rainbows and more kick ass rock. Cookie’s reverential performance was very well-done. I’d love to hear him sing that live, with maybe a few more twists to make it more his own.

I love the Foo Fighters. The album the song is from The Colour and the Shape is a classic now. One of my all-time favorite songs from the album is “Everlong”. I’d love to hear Cookie cover that one.

  • Jolene

To me heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s another one of those winners who stands out because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“originalà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the show. So far, so good. TOML will go gold this week, and he did move close to a million iTunes downloads in the one week we actually got the numbers. The media is eating him up, so far the frenzy around him only seems to be growing.
As for the future- We’ll have to wait and see what happens. No one can predict anything, really.
There’s no need to wear rose colored glasses, but I think there’s a gap between that and wearing black shades… LOL

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

What does “rose colored glasses” have to do with it? Who is hot and who is not all comes down to a very subjective opinion.

This is a general reminder for everybody: I would not assume my fellow posters motives. Please keep your thoughts to your own opinion. Thank you.

Wow, purps, thank you for that… I am a Cooktard, and my rose colored glasses are really shiny right now.
That first and last one? Hmmm…. Yummy.

  • jpfan

I guess I should have said using my regular glasses, Cook didn’t look “hot” to me. I’m obviously in the minority here so to each his own. Whatever floats your boat, etc.

I don’t want to come across as such a downer on the guy. He’s got talent and he seems like a decent person. I’m just always surprised when so many people see an artist one way and I see them differently. What’s interesting about Idol is that you can see if they can cross over as true recording artists and not just Idol winners. But since I’m the only “doubter” here I’ll just keep away from future Cook threads and not spoil the fun.

I didn’t mean cooktard as an insult. I’m a recovering archtard myself. :)

I understand those were taken of the TV screen/glass (most probably clear, not rose-colored, lol). Pretty nice, huh? ;)

I forgot to say the non-cooktard in me wasn’t particularly crazy about My Hero (not much of a rock fan, remember? heh). *peace*

  • cheese

I loved the “My Hero” performance – I really hope that’s the “missing link” on his tour setlist. If it was something he just threw together with an unfamiliar band for a one-off performance on Leno, it was really good, but I’d love to hear it after he’s worked on it a little more.

I am all TOML’ed out at this point, but bless his heart for trying to rock the rainbow a little.

I’m not going to tout OR doubt DC’s post-Idol prospects until I see and hear him sing his own music. All of this stuff is basically filler until the album is out. In the Chicago radio interview, he made it sound like things were moving right along on the CD, RCA put him in control, and he’s happy with the results so far. That could be a bunch of BS, I’ll have to wait and see how many Diane Warren songs are in the liner notes, but it sounds promising.

I’ll take this “My Hero” or his homecoming acoustic performance. Both are pretty awesome. I’m particularly glad to see him actually having some fun onstage. As someone said before, he hasn’t been this loose since “Day Tripper”.

Just as a general note here:

I hope people with dissenting opinions post in this thread. It keeps things lively. A bit of a mix up is more interesting to read. It takes all kinds to make an interesting thread.

The important thing to remember is not to be judgemental or condescending as you offer your opinion. Generally, people can handle negative opinions, if they feel they aren’t being insulted or condescended to. That’s been my experience on the blog, and that’s why I mod the way I do.

And those who can’t handle criticism of their favorite in any fashion? Are immediately shipped off the nearest fansite. ;) .

well the originality thing is debatable cuz the same thing goes for doughtry or even leona lewis which i personally think is a young mariah .. what made them successful is not their sound or their originality but their songs and how well they fit in their genre .. what i mean is maybe cook does sound like most rockers but what will make him or break him is his first album or record as he always say :P ..

i loved what he did on the show but we have to wait and see what comes next and then judge based on it ..

sorry for my english im not a native speaker .. :cheese1_ee:

Personally, I would love to see him sing “Creep” live. I’ve been looping the mp3 of when he covered it live at a show in Tulsa when he was with Axium for weeks now. I was never much of a Radiohead fan but I thought he totally rocked out on that song. “My Hero” has never been a favorite of mine, but he did a great job on it. My favorite FF song is “Best of You”, I would’ve enjoyed seeing him cover that.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m just always surprised when so many people see an artist one way and I see them differently.

jpfan, what a boring world it would be if we all saw things the same way! Trust me, as a WordNerd, I see plenty of posts elsewhere online that are not kind to him so you are not alone in not getting his appeal. There’s plenty of room in music for everyone and their different tastes. And I’m not sure how quickly you’ll be a recovering Archutard, he’s got a CD coming out this year too just to set you back a few paces in your recovery, lol.

  • hoodathunk

“My Hero” was terrific! Now that right there is rock, and it’s definitely where he belongs. This is his niche for sure, but I’m afraid they are going to want him to go more pop in order to push his songs to top 40. I am familiar with the FF version of “My Hero” and I can tell you that song got plenty of play on Rock radio but never saw the light of day on top 40. He will have to walk a fine line, but this is the David Cook I like to see.

  • Layla

    Purplesmile,
Thanks for the screen caps…he looked especially good in the last photo..beautiful in fact.

As for the music and potential selling power…he is going to kick ass when his record comes out..not doubt.

Of course not everyone is going to like him…so the fuck what? Definately a matter of taste. There are plenty who love him and his artistry and will buy his music so it’s all good.

  • Thea

    He’s a sudoku-nerd too… love him.

  • wfowfowfo

    According this this site:

Senator Obama’s going to be on Kimmel Sunday night — with our David. Imagine that?

As for the music and potential selling powerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he is going to kick ass when his record comes out..not doubt.

Everything so far points to Cook being successful. However, his success will depend on the record he produces come fall. All of the post-Idol hype (and I’m thinking of Taylor, who had a tremendous amount of buzz and hype right after the show) in the world won’t help if Cook doesn’t make a record that sells. So, like Cheese, I’m withholding any sort of definite prediction until I hear the album.

  • spanishfan

I just adored to see Cook doing his thing and loving it up. I for the love of me never saw anything in JP namely Jon Peter Lewis and I have never been a fan of David A. So it does take all kinds to make a world. David C was phenomenal on Leno and My Hero is so good for his voice. What he has that others do not have is a radio friendly voice. The more one listens to TOML, the better it gets. In fact I love the song and each time he performs it it gets better. Nearly on the top 40 (in two weeks) at 42 and nearly gold in two and a half weeks in sales without the benefit of the international fans being able to buy, like they did in the past, as there are no physical copies. The best any AI has done with a coronation song. I do see him selling multi plat as they predict. He has the voice people want to hear.

  • Jenn_AI Fan

On whether Cook gained new fans with these performances: I don’t know that he broadened his audience, but he might have deepened it, specifically with rock fans who may not watch Idol. If you watch the My Hero performance, there are definitely some people in the audience reacting like they are at a rock concert, and not at a stop at the American Idol’s coronation tour. Some views of that performance, plus the Rolling Stone interview, plus the displays of sports knowledge could bring in some new non-Idol fans in the area of rock. Just a thought.

On the band: I would not be surprised if that is the touring and/or recording band. They seemed a bit too unified to me to have just been spliced together for this performance.

One final thing: I’ve never actually followed the Idol winner like I’ve followed Cook. How does his number of appearances compare with other winners? And the different kinds of outlets? I get the sense that they always run the winner ragged—is this any different, or pretty similar to past years?

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

Loved, loved, loved My Hero. I love the Foo Fighters and he did them justice. Though I prefer the material from Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. I’d love to hear DC do some The Pretender. They also did an amazing cover of Prince’s Darling Nikki that would crack my shit up if DC ever felt it was “safe” to do a cover of a cover again. I’m guessing that one is many years off, mostly because of the nature of the song, lol.

The interview was great, too, despite the guy getting confused about Simon’s label. He seemed at ease, and I really enjoyed it.

  • reinharv

Well I actually liked Cook’s sound and music during his audition. I can’t say I liked that weird hair but he was in the top 4 at top 24–him being 2nd from Michael Johns but Cook pretty much took over and became #1. Appearance (hair) aside, I really was drawn in because of how he makes you feel and really listen to the lyrics–he draws you in. He sings with so much passion. You can see his soul. I hardly listened to music at all and pretty much gave up on rock but that was my favorite type of music–just not too hard rock. Listening to Cook doing rock just makes you happy and you are having a good time. I seriously would spend money going to his concerts just to experience the whole thing live. I can’t say that I have ever followed any Idol winner since him. Once the season is over–that’s it for me.

What really makes this different is that his story is the “All American Dream” and it’s so nice to see such a great guy take home the prize and people actually loved his music. I never listened to any other Idol winner or bought their music and was content to catching Daughtry (who didn’t win) on the radio now and then. My experience is quite different with David Cook. I purchased everything off of iTunes and his Analog Heart and that’s all I listen to.

Cook always was “sexy” looking to me if I didn’t concentrate on the comb-over. I think he looks even sexier because he’s such a nice guy and isn’t afraid to cry (that did it for me for sure). His vocals came first and now the added bonus is he’s definitely not bad on the eyes.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I’d say the coverage is about the same–maybe a little more than what Jordin got and not as much as Taylor. Taylor landed some very lucrative deals after he came off Idol, including a Ford commerical, a book deal and he was People Magazine’s Sexiest Bachelor, or whatever that is. It’s still a little early, maybe Cook will get some of those deals.

The best any AI has done with a coronation song.

The jury is out on this. Kelly’s “A Moment Like This” sold a lot of copies and was a hit in many radio formats. I wish I had the stats at my fingertips, but I think it’s too early to call “Time of My Life” the most successful coronation single of all.

  • cheese

The jury is out on this. Kellyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Moment Like Thisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ sold a lot of copies and was a hit in many radio formats. I wish I had the stats at my fingertips,

Kirsten posted some stats in this week’s Mediabase update:

Kellyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Moment Like Thisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was a huge hit. It was #1 on the Hot 100 for two weeks running. It also peaked at number 4 on the Top 40 Mainstream and the Hot Adult Contemporary Track. It got to 8 on the Top 40 Tracks, 27 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks and 58 on the Hot Country Singles and Tracks. There are a lot of Billboard charts out there and they keep changing them up.

TOML doesn’t have a chance of doing better than AMLT, but I think it’s doing better than the other coronation songs in terms of radio play.

  • jpfan

The Billboard Hot 100 charts the top 100 singles using a complicated formula of sales and radio play. Here’s a chart (from Pulse Music boards) comparing Idol coronation singles:

Kelly Clarkson – A Moment Like This
    60-52-1-1-2-3-5-5-9-11-22-25-36-65-77-79-80-82-86

Ruben Studdard – Flying Without Wings
    2-2-13-18-38-55-70-71-85-91

    Fantasia – I Believe
    1-6-18-34-44-54-66-80-88-98

Carrie Underwood – Inside Your Heaven
    1-3-4-10-17-26-37-53-63-79-94-98

Taylor Hicks – Do I Make You Proud
    1-3-14-27-39-55-78-98

Jordin Sparks – This Is My Now
    15-25-72-95

Right now Cook’s chart on the BBHot 100 is:

    3-9-20

BB Hot 100 formula has changed so much over the years, it’s not really fair to compare the songs. Cook is def doing very well getting radio play.
AMLT is exceptional in that unlike every other coronation single, it started slow and then hit #1 in the third week. All the others start big and then slide down the charts. It also stayed in the top 100 songs longer than any other coronation single.

Jordin’s single had the shortest stay on the BB Hot 100. Of course, she’s turned into a multi platinum seller of singles.

  • spanishfan

I found these details on David-Cook.org

David ´s coronation song has nearly gone gold in 2 1/2 weeks and is nearly gold on top 40 at 42. So request as much as possible and we need 20,000 itune sales to get certified gold.

Here is a list of how other coronation songs did

Just to compare to the coronation singles of the past seasons:
    Jordin’s never went gold.
Taylor’s went gold in 5 months.
Carrie’s went gold in 8 months.
Fantasia, Ruben and Kelly all went gold but I am not sure how long it took.
Clay’s almost went platinum (his was the closest to platinum).
Cookie’s will be one of the quickest to go gold. Another thing to keep in mind: Since his sales are all digital, there are no multiple copies to be counted as legitimate sales. And, there are songs receiving a lot more airplay selling a lot less right now.

As for mediabase he is 42 on TOP 40 and looking to get to top 40 next week and 21 on Hot AC.

  • blueisyou

Love this guy. Hate this song.

  • jpfan

It’s really hard to compare the sale of physical singles that probably didn’t go on sale until week(s) after the finale in a store and for $3 – $8 to a download available right after the finale in your home for 99 cents. Just like it won’t be really fair to compare Cook’s album sales with the 600K that Clay Aiken sold his first week. CD sales have fallen off a cliff in the past two years. So take all these numbers for what they’re worth. They’re interesting but only a very music savvy person (Kirsten) can really interpret them(not me).

Please don’t request that peeps spam radio stations on my blog. I’ve banned that kind of street teaming here. Taylor’s fans bugged the PDs so much, the label had to step in and tell them to cease and desist. Program Directors don’t like fans bombarding them with requests.

Fantasia, Ruben and Kelly all went gold but I am not sure how long it took. Clay’s almost went platinum (his was the closest to platinum).

According to the numbers I have on Clay–1.01M–Clay went platinum. I have more stats, but I’m not going to post them here. I don’t want the thread veering too off course. I’ll post the numbers I have in my next Billboard report.

By the way, I hope JPFan doesn’t mind me speaking for her, but she’s posted here long enough, and I know that the JP in her name doesn’t stand for Jon Peter Lewis. LOL.

Also, I’m a Cook fan, and if he outsold them all, I’d be delighted. But I am not going to start making hyperbolic predictions about his success this early in the game. I’ve watched the Idol game long enough to know better. LOL. Also, the record business these days is a volatile, tough business. You just never know.

  • Virgii5

I didn’t feel a thing watching his performances. Like somebody else said.. he’s just another average rocker out in the rea world. I’m sure WHATEVER he does pleases his fans from AI, but to be real… he ain’t nothing special. I’m trying to like him, I really am. I love rock too.. love LOVE the foofighters, but sorry, this was a plain old karaoke version to me… and whoever said it is right.. the crowd was dead looking.

  • ginger012

David looked like he was going to jump out of his skin singing TOML… My hero was much better and he looked like he was enjoying himself.. CANT WAIT until he releases his album with his own music…
Does anyone know if his other indie albums will ever be released? I know he was working on a second album before Idol.. I wonder how that works now that he is under contract…

I guess he was right when he said in that video blog it wasn’t about him but about us :lol_tb:

  • lg

Well, I am not a card carrying Cooktard either. I agree that he sounds like so many other rock singers out there.

Having said that, I think David Cook has the potential to attain great success in the rock genre. I lean more toward hard rock and metal, so it is my hope that, in the vein of Daughtry, he will be able to appeal to rock fans across the board, with both ballady type songs and hard driving rock. I am really looking forward to hearing his band.

  • baxter

Uhhhhh NO….WHATEVER David Cook does, does not please all his fans all the time. That kind of statement just makes me ANGRY!!! And as for the ‘Real World Rocker” I agree this isnt it, but then again DC is singing 2 songs in the late afternoon at the Tonight Show…..not what I’d compare to OzzFest. Doubt DC was gunna bite the head off a bat and surf the mosh pit at the freakin TONIGHT SHOW. Good Lord. I was delighted he seemed so happy to be on stage and had his swagger back. Sure has been missed, but I still don’t think anyone, including his fans, have even seen what DC can do while in his element, with his OWN music and out of the AI bubble he is still wrapped in.

  • Pam

As a fan of Cookie’s, seeing people do that even gets under my skin honestly. Being apart of other AI fandoms in the past myself, I’ve seen evidence countless times where that ends up backfiring in the faces of the fans and hurts the artist. It accomplishes nothing IMO.

  • KrazeeK120

    Bax….I love you Boo!

I’m so glad that DC is doing so well. I can hardly stand to wait for an album.

I guess I need to learn that virtue they call “patience.”

YES! Angry Bax is in the HOUSE! Keep it comin’ girl! ;)

And yeah, a big. fat. WTFever. on the “no matter what he does will please his fans” shit. There have been performances of his that I don’t care for, and there will be in the future too, I’m sure. So yeah, that big generalization sorta pisses me off too.

Thought the Foo Fighters cover was good, but yeah, I’d love to see a more rehearsed version of it. I really like the acoustic version from his homecoming. That version is in regular rotation on the ipod. Preeeeeeeeetty.

And that’s why, in my guidelines, I ask that people not generalize about fanbases. It’s rude, it’s wrong, it makes people angry, it starts arguments.

So deep breath everyone. Let’s move on.

ETA: Please don’t generalize about fanbases or fans, or engage in talk about the boards on the board. At this point, I’m deleting and editing posts that don’t meet the guidelines.

Doubt DC was gunna bite the head off a bat and surf the mosh pit at the freakin TONIGHT SHOW. Good Lord.

Surely he will be doing this on The View next week? Or maybe at the Cancer Center benefit? He probably has to pick and choose his bat head biting moments or the animal rights people will be after him.

Plenty of people think David is just an “average rocker” and “nothing special” and to this day this is exactly how I always felt about Chris Daughtry and almost every rocker on mainstream radio. There seems to be a big market for average rockers, and one person’s average is another person’s favorite band in the universe. I don’t think David’s going to start a rock revolution or anything, but I don’t agree that he has zero appeal in the “real world.” No idol’s future can be prognosticated from their post-Idol interviews and coronation songs, imo.

  • Jolene

As for Cookie – Between the 3 radio interviews today, Leno last night, and Kimmel on Sunday, I’m almost Cookied out!
I don’t think it’s wise to make assumptions on his future success for better or for worse, and I think it’s wildly Unwise to spam-call radio stations. But hopefully the Cooktards aren’t going overboard.

And I doubt that message came from David – it just doesn’t sound like him. I agree. I left my response on Rolling Stone two days ago. It went something like he won, now we get to see how he plays it out.

I’m thinking, and hoping, he plays it out well. I have issues with his people for doing that. Just doesn’t hold water in the real world…

I fear some of us, myself included, are expecting the moon and the stars from the kid. He is just 25 years old, dealing with his first big break. His best work is a few years away.He needs to live a little, lose a little, love a little.

What cannot be doubted is the joy he feels in creating music. I love that purity of purpose. It is infectious. However I am struggling to keep my objectivity regarding what he can do. He deserves better, not this build him up so high that we can rip into him when he proves human.

  • Trina

I had read on another board that Z100, which is I believe the #1 radio station in the country actually played magic TOML earlier today. Did anyone else in NY happen to hear it? If this is true color me shocked. As much as I’ve grown to like it I couldn’t imagine that station touching magic rainbow with a 10 foot pole.

In this case, though, unlike request-bombing a radio station (which costs the radio station time & $), you have to register at RS to comment, increasing the RS site user count, plus they get increased hits and ad impressions on the article itself, with basically zero cost except some intern skimming to clean up any hateful/obscene comments. They’re likely entirely happy with the result. (Of course, they should also be able to see that a lot of their traffic coming from Cook’s myspace just from their referrer logs, so it’s also kind of unnecessary. I guess it has the benefit of letting Cook’s myspace people get a read on what kind of response they can drive without access to RS’s stats.)

ITA. Personally, I think he’s done amazingly well given that all that he’s had to work with in terms of musical promotion is the mediocre-at-best TOML. That alone is proof positive that the guy in fact, has “real world” appeal. The fact that he’s been gaining fans post-idol singing that dreck is indication to me that he can sell and given the right material, sell really really well. But while I am one of those who do believe that he has the potential to be a platinum selling artist, I agree that it’s no use predicting anything at this point given that we have no idea how good the album is going to be. At best, I’m going by Analog Heart and the kind of mass appeal I think it has, which IMO is huge.

Wow! Some thread. I’ll simply say that I really liked the performance, thought he definitely looked pretty hawt (imo,) and agree that it’s too early to predict ultimate success.

It takes more than a good album (first step). They have to release the right song from that album first. If there is a good (or better) album and they release the “right” song first, he should do well because the press has been pretty receptive and kind to him, and he will unlikely say or do anything to make people stop liking him ala (insert your favorite big-mouth from seasons past).

Thanks for posting these (and for moderating) MJ!

I agree. I think that might a lot of what has generated so much ‘good feeling’ for this fella. With the exception of some obviously biased ‘the other guy shoulda won’ articles, I haven’t seen too much negative written about the boy.
There’s something warm and likeable about DC that makes you root for him.

The whole thing has been refreshing since our culture seems to prefer tearing people down.

  • spanishfan

Sorry MJ – but this is a matter of principal. I did not ask – that was part of the stats I copies together with the statement about buying more which was all from the same post at David-Cook.org. I could not ask fans to buy because I am an international fan who unfortunately cannot download from USA itunes.

  • spanishfan

The most important part of DC ´s talent is his ability to arrange mundane tunes and make them into current hits. I listen now to Always Be My Baby and All I Ever Need is you and cannot believe they are the same ordinary tunes. They are so currrent and could easily be used on a tv programme. That is what makes a true artist and that he really has. I am so mesmerised by this ability. In so far as other people ´s remarks, I really do not care what other people think – what is important is what I think and believe and I know music, having been involved in opera for so many years and in all aspects of music.

What I do know is that if I am not interested in another musician and do not like their music or voice, I would not bother to participate in any discussion at all. about them, but each to their own.

  • Layla

DC has an amazing headstart over any other Idol winner. How many former AI winners have a back catalogue of well-written and well performed songs that are pleasing his fans and garnering him new ones?

He’s in a good place now and with the general media respect and great like for him as a person and artist, his performances on Idol and post-idol, his former work on AH and with Axium, it is quite obvious he is much much more than an “average” rocker. Here, and other places on the internet, there are people who have huge expectations and those who love to tear him down.

He will be successful…there is that vibe and aura about him- but success can be playing to huge crowds, or finding a niche for himself and playing to an appreciative audience in smallish clubs. There are several artist like this who are wonderful…doing what they love and making a living from it.

I think DC as an artist is here to stay..don’t think he will ever have to go back to bartending, painting apartments or playing to an audeince of 5.

  • Duke

I’m so sick of these idol winner’s songs. GOD THEY SUCK

  • Layla

In agreement. I don’t undertand this either. I’m an internet whore since discovering DC so I’ve been around various blogs and boards. Funny (strange) how some people expend so much time and energy slagging him off. I don’t mean that everyone should like him; I have read some well written (and funny) critiques of him which do not hit below the belt or reek of jealousy (their fave didn’t win sorta stuff). But a lot of it is petty and mean-spirited.

    Oh well….

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so sick of these idol winnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s songs. GOD THEY SUCK

When I invest hours and hours of my time watching the show, I think its in my right to at least expect a decent song.

  • Layla

you are right…generally speaking the songs do suck, but blame it on the producers and their stupidity for giving such lame-ass songs to the winners.

  • littlesparrow

I don’t think David Cook’s CS is any better or any worse than any of the other songs that Idol winners are forced to sing. Yes, including AMLT.

As far as biting heads off of bats, that was never going to be his style. David Cook weeps manly tears, is gracious to his opponents, and invites cancer patients to see him on morning shows. He’s rocking more of a sweet, sensitive John Mayer vibe than anything.

And as far as “average rockers” go, I don’t think people like Daughtry/Nickelback are much respected for their style, but they are hugely successful, and Cook may be as well. We’ll have to see, of course, but I think he has a pretty good shot of being that successful winner that AI churns out about every 3 years.

YES! Angry Bax is in the HOUSE! Keep it cominà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ girl! ;)

Dang, see what happens when I try to have a life, I miss Angry Bax!

When I invest hours and hours of my time watching the show, I think its in my right to at least expect a decent song.

I feel ya on that Duke. But, unfortunately I don’t know if the AI peeps would know a good song if it hit them in the head. That being said, I do think Cookie has done a great job of covering up Magic Rainbow’s suckitude. For me, he’s performed this song better than I ever thought it could be done.

  • Duke

Layla, oh i wasnt taking a shot at Cook at all..if anything, i sympathize with him because he deserves better than that (as do all the winners)

And littlesparrow, I agree AMLT isnt a great song, but I think it became a great song because KC sang it like no one else could and her voice alone sent it to No1 (and the power of Idol of course).

Sorry to go off-topic, but I need some tutoring. I’m new to the site and relatively new to posting comments.

What does ETA mean? What does ITA mean and what does “after the jump mean?” I think “atj” means after the next picture?

I know I’m gonna feel like a ninny when y’alls tell me, but I just havn’t been able to figure these out.

Sorry — blame it on my fossilized feline brain (couger, here).

  • SpenserJ

ETA = Edited to Add (when you come back to edit your post because there was something else you wanted to say)

    ITA = I totally agree

After the Jump = After you click on the link (when MJ posts an article on the front of the blog, you need to click on the link to read the rest of it – that’s the jump).

And, Welcome to MJ’s Patchchat :)

I am SO FRUSTRATED with modding these threads, posting reminders and finding people ignoring the guidelines here OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

If you are so sensitive about your favorite, that you can’t handle criticism with out replying in a rude and sarcastic way, then you need to find another place to post. It really is as simple as that.

    My guidelines AGAIN:

    http://mjsbigblog.com/?page_id=1172

I’ve been banning people lately. I’m on a tear, in fact. Just so you ALL know.

By the way, I’m a fan of David Cook. NOT a fan of Magic Rainbows. I’m pretty sick of sucky coronation songs myself.

  • Mackie

David would have been platinum if TPTB would let the International fans buy his single. Merely on the American fans he went nearly gold in 2 1-2 weeks.

I’m not from USA, I’m from Asia. I bought his ABMB, Little Sparrow and Billie Jean from Itunes. So, it is open to international fans. However, I won’t buy his TOML, I tried to buy it but that song just don’t dig me enuff to buy it.. :(

  • Patchchat

    TU, Spence.

  • Jenn_AI Fan

On Can You Duet (also run by Fremantle), the label chose songs for the final two pairs that each pair was honestly thrilled with and that seemed like something they might actually want to use as a first single. Not sure why AI can’t do the same thing for their contestants, especially as the AI winner single gets so much publicity.

I’m not sure if anyone will even be looking at this thread now, but…..
    Trina,
Yes, Z100 has played Magic Rainbow 3 times today(according to Mediabase).

  • Layla

    Sorry MJ,
that response slipped out. And it wasn’t “said” in a sarcastic way, but with a “shrug” of the shoulders.

Won’t happen again. I’m only human.

  • Trina

Thanks sherry! I actually heard it myself on Z100 tonight in the car! My daughter and I both shrieked! I didn’t realize they played it three times today though..and that’s even more crazy. This station is really big and very popular so I’m very surprised. I can’t remember the last time I heard a winning song on there (maybe Kelly’s song) It’s also getting played like crazy on the big Hot AC station WPLJ. Go magic rainbow go!!
