Update: Posted a higher-quality clip

Here’s a not so great quality video of the montage that aired tonight on ESPN2′s Baseball Tonight,   featuring a new song (well, old song–he recorded it last year for David Cook, it didn’t make the cut) from David Cook.

It’s called “One Second to Change Your Life” and well, I need to listen to it a few more times before I give my verdict.

But what do you think? I’ll put up a better version of the vid when it becomes available.

For those who don’t know, this was a song written last year for the album and one of those that didn’t make the cut. It’s not a new song. But it’s still great ESPN was interested in it.

I like the beat, and with those lyrics it goes well for this kind of montage.

  • IdolThoughts

    Good for Cookie. Great drums!

  • hypertwink

Pair this with Declaration and TOML, he’s a sports-montage-y dynamo. =)

    Don’t forget “Heroes”

  • Truthiness

    Let’s try this again….grrr.

Glad to see that Cook’s getting lots of exposure. Cool for him. Also super glad to hear that this song isn’t new or off of his new album, because it’s generic. It’s not a horrible song, it’s just been done and done again. I’m still waiting to hear music I like as much as I like Cook, and with this song? I still have to wait.

  • dragonus456

Cool song, would like to get this on itunes!

need to get it trending on twitter

  • SashaB

Love it. It’s the perfect for sports montages. I am also a huge Yankees fans with ties to the Dodgers and Angels. So to see Baseball set to David Cook’s voice? Epic and FTW!!!

  • sleepyinsomniac

This is his 3rd or 4th espn montage now? Somebody at espn loves them some David Cook.

  • progression

Good job for Cherry Lane getting those Cook penned songs out there! That’s going to be a nice deal for him it looks like. And it’s always great to see Dave getting some promo with the non-AI audience. Those sports guys seem to love them some Cookie, lol.

  • maturin

It’s got that sweet I wanna lead a charge someplace Cook feel, I like it. I also just like having a new toy!

That montage was so happy and sad at once: love the little glimpse of Fenway Park sundown, sad to see the Red Sox crushed by Angels! I hope Dave and guys do this live someplace soon, that would rock!

  • http://www.youtube.com/thenovicepianist TNP

Eeep I hope we can download the song soon!

  • Garnetstar

Hmmm debate as to weather this was really re-recorded. Although there is something very Kyle Peek about the drumming. It’s a nice sports montage song. I can’t really hear a lot of it with the sports chaps chatting away.

  • tierbee

Woohoo, more David Cook! He’s like… Montage Man. Love it. Love sports, love David… works for me!

  • Studio57

    Lifehouse 2.0.
    With crappy lyrics.
    That are cheesy.
Do Cook and Allen have a thing with making each second count?

  • wheezie_v

Not his strongest lyrics (not bad though), but it’s a cool upbeat song. Those ESPN folks like him, don’t they? Watching Yankee highlights while David Cook sings a new song? That’s win right there.

  • SpenserJ

This is his 3rd or 4th espn montage now? Somebody at espn loves them some David Cook.

It reminds me how, in the 80′s every movie you saw had a Kenny Loggins theme song LOL. I have no idea why that popped into my mind, but now Cook is the Kenny Loggins of ESPN to me :)

  • weareallinnocent

I’m drowning in goodness here. New music from Cook and album art from Adam?! Guys, slow down, it’s TMTH! :-)

It’s not his best song, but I like it. Mostly I just like hearing new music from Cook. And I do love sports montages set to his music. They do seem to fit like hand and glove to me.

  • canadiandcfan

i’d be a great addition to the ESPN team, i get the impression I would fit right in!! I’m liking the song, love the context and hoping its available for dwl soon.

Well, I do have quite a few Cooksongs that I love to pieces, but otherwise? Word.

Uplifting, rah-rah Cook is never as convincing or interesting to me as angsty, brooding, and/or bitter Cook.

To be fair, I don’t know that he’s ever written “uplifting and rah-rah” with more than two hours to finish a song. So. (Forestalling the counter: ADAM is not rah-rah.)

It works just fine for the montage, but yeah, I really hope that this stays well away from the next album.

  • wordnerdarchie

Thanks so much DeanaRM, your video is terrific. :)

  • Gus

Do Cook and Allen have a thing with making each second count?

Nothing wrong with that. Life’s too short not to.

Hard to hear the song against the sports stuff, but it sounds like a fitting song for the segment. For good or bad, one moment definitely does change a sports career. Could use this one for the Olympics.

  • shenanigan

It is great to hear new music from David Cook and I personally really like this song. I know he can and has done songs that are more unusual but I love the lyrics and upbeat tempo.

Now if I could only get a version without all the crowds roaring over the words. It is a little like a David Cook concert when at times (Lie) you wish people would quiet down.

  • movin2thabeet

I guess it depends on what the intention for the song is. Is it just for ESPN? Will it be sold separately as a single? Are there any ideas for further coverage as in radio? I think its perfect for the sports montage its being used for. I’m not so sure about releasing it as a single though. It did remind me of ‘Dream Big’.

  • Mark

Yeah, not his best work. I do think his voice elevates the performance above its lyrical trappings, especially on the verses. But it didn’t at any point become anything special, though, hey, it was good montage material… which usually isn”t what you want in a song.

  • HappyDaisy

Huge Cook fan. But have to acknowledge that this one is generic and repetitive. His voice sounds very nice in the beginning of the song. Glad it didn’t make the album. Heroes and Declaration are better.

  • ladymadonna

I’m not really loving the song either, but the continued exposure of his entire catalog is incredible IMO. This is now the 10th individual David Cook song to get some kind of television exposure this past year (list courtesy of FolkFan at DCO):

Magic Rainbow: AI Finale (Fox); AI Top 36 montage (Fox); Today Show (NBC); CBS Morning Show (CBS); The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet (Fox); Leno (NBC); The View (ABC); So You Think You Can Dance (Fox); Olympics opening ceremony and swimming relay (NBC); Oprah (ABC/Syndicated); Today Show end of year montage (NBC); America’s Got Talent montage (NBC); Greatest Loser montage (NBC); General Hospital montage (ABC); SYTYCD Canada montage

  • Sassycatz

I just wish we could get a clean copy. Actually, I’d like a clean, complete copy of all those song snippets Cherry Lane has in their vault.

Thanks for linking my vid. I finally got it to upload to youtube as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yehfRlmLW5o

Thank you. That audio was the best I’ve heard thus far.

  • Balance

This was my least favorite of the leaked snippets, but it works great for the montage. Glad it didn’t make DCTR, but freakin’ thrilled to hear that voice sing something new!

Sigh….what a wonderful day in the Cookverse.

  • dragonus456
  • movin2thabeet

Yeah, I agree that its a very generic kind of song so I hope it doesn’t get too closely connected to the David Cook brand. It will be interesting to see what the team has in mind for the song. It is telling that no one leaked a peep about it beforehand. Maybe it was a quick promo turnaround kind of deal.

  • CathyMK

I don’t think it’s his best work either, but it’s not a bad song. It shows that he can write different types of songs to fit different occasions, which is important if he wants to write for other people or movies, TV, whatever.

Over on the headlines thread, a couple of us said it reminded us of the newish Our Lady Peace song “All You Did Was Save My Life”. Jamaica168 noted that both songs were cowritten by Zac Malloy.

  • EmmaJK

Now that I’ve calmed down somewhat, I’ll agree that it’s not the best we can get from Cookie, but the chorus is definitely catchy and it’s perfect for the montage. It might be that this snippet (cause if this is the whole song, it’s pretty short) was marketed by Cherry Lane for just that purpose.

I’m just excited to hear something new, and it’s so cool to have yet another one of his songs attached to sports. That must just thrill him.

Wow, did we really think we would be bored during David’s 2 week “vacation”?

  • sunchick

Pair this with Declaration and TOML, he’s a sports-montage-y dynamo. =)

No kidding. Don’t forget Heroes. After Heroes was picked up by ESPN way back when on the heels of the Olympics catching Magic Rainbow fever, or no, was it after AI used ADAM for the season 8 audition recap montage, I dunno..but at some point I officially declared Cook the montagiest montager that ever montaged. I’m highly intuitive that way.

As for the tune… I like it aight, but I can’t hear all the lyrics with those voice overs and I’m a lyrics girl at heart so that bugs. Can you pipe down, sports voice? Course, as I recall, it was one of my least favorites of all the sooper sekrity snippety leaks, so of COURSE they released that one. Cuz RCA hates me, clearly, and continues to torment me with their choices. It couldn’t have been Strange and Beautiful, because…um…baseball is strange and beautiful, in a Bull Durham kinda way?

It reminds me how, in the 80′s every movie you saw had a Kenny Loggins theme song LOL.

LMAO. Didn’t Kenny Loggins write that St. Elmo’s Fire song? Haaa…I keed you, David Foster. I think Kruk has a mancrush on Cook.

    Go Phillies!

Yeah, I’d guess this is all about 19M trying to build his presence, not about getting a song out there per se. Great strategy pursuing the sports related opportunities though. It’s a good fit musically and
probably not a huge overlap with the AI audience.

movin2thabeet I also heard Dream Big, lol!

  • spritely

LadyMadonna–and FolkFan–that list is all kinds of awesome. Thanks for the overview of his year of tv song exposure. And the year’s not even over yet.

  • Fergie

Yeah the song does get repetitive at the end but I love hearing David’s voice singing anything.

It’s great that CherryLane is working to license David’s music, music publishing is where the money is at for a songwriter. ESPN has a love affair with DC. All good to me

  • sanduskyday

The song is good as background for a sports montage. Outside of that, it’s a good thing it didn’t make the CD because it is not strong as a stand alone single.

  • tierbee

Didn’t they say it was recorded for ESPN? Could be specifically used for sports, who knows. Nice to hear the voice – the song is fine, nothing spectacular but sure makes a nice montage song! I’ll take it. Cookie crumbs are always good and we’re getting a bunch of them while he takes a “break” (dude, go RELAX!)… hardest working guy around, I swear.

  • spritely

    LOL!!!

  • Keel

Didn’t like it much either after the first listen. Heroes worked so well for last year’s end of year football clips. Why not that song? Because “You’re still standing!” is super hooky.

I wonder if these are his lyrics? He’s talked about the fact that he’s had to make his lyrics more straightforward — but I’ve always liked wordy ass intricate Cook lyrics a la Analog Heart and ADAM.

  • Suzanne

I liked the song. I’m surprised that I’m alone. It’s positive, it’s not sappy, David sounds great. I liked it.

  • spritely

I can barely hear the verses over the sportscasters, so I’m not even trying to judge it yet except to say that I could hear that it has a catchy chorus.

  • SashaB

You are not alone, Suzanne. I like the song. It’s actually quite appropriate for baseball, IMO. How many times did the Yankees change the tide in the 9th Inning this post season? A-Rod was fanastic in the ALCS series. So yeah, as a baseball fan, it resonated.

I love that they are getting David’s “voice” out there, too. It’s distinctive and unique. And I love that ESPN likes him. Good stuff.

  • tierbee

    I liked the song.

I like it, too – don’t think it is spectacular but don’t care, just happy to hear him :)

He’s talked about the fact that he’s had to make his lyrics more straightforward ‘” but I’ve always liked wordy ass intricate Cook lyrics a la Analog Heart and ADAM.

Keel, me too. As soon as I heard the opening lines of ADAM I knew David wrote it… and I love it.

  • sunchick

Uplifting, rah-rah Cook is never as convincing or interesting to me as angsty, brooding, and/or bitter Cook.

Cha, this is a far cry from “stitch me up and bleed me out, it’s over” or “it’s a twisted game, and brief and oft repeating prose that never seems to resonate….” Bitter Brooding Cook is my favorite flavor, which is weird because he seems so far from bitter and brooding as a person. But he writes a good bitter brooding tune. I figure some chick must have really done a number on him once upon a time.

He’s talked about the fact that he’s had to make his lyrics more straightforward ‘” but I’ve always liked wordy ass intricate Cook lyrics a la Analog Heart and ADAM.

Word to ya wordy ass mutha. I remember wishing I could disabuse him of that “must simplify lyrics” notion. And kinda wanting to smack the person who advised straightforwardness. Unless it was Raine, cuz he’s too purdy to smack. Gimme “break your neck for some substance, this is temporary sanity, an exercise in vanity…” any day. I had the same ADAM feeling when I heard Mr. Sensitive. Wordy ass vintage Cook.

  • 123abc456

  • Garnetstar

Ha, I hear a line about an old cliche and arrogance. It’s some of Cook’s lyrics alright. I do like the lyric you blink your eye, day turns to night. I do like that turn of phrase.

ETA: Also the line about breathing the air you held inside. Isn’t that a Cook quote from the end of idol?

  • suebrody

Love Cook, was not overjoyed with the song, but am so happy for him that ESPN is a big fan. It’s nice that a big sports fan gets that kind of love from a sports station. It is better as a background song, I agree, b/c I didn’t hear anything particularly memorable in the lyrics. Where is LIE???

Boy, has Cook been busy these days, even for him.

  • luci

Not the best lyrics in the world but very appropriate for this montage and his voice sounds amazing btw. Very catchy tune I’m like humming it right now.

  • jan

The song works beautifully for it’s purpose – because really in sports it can take one second to change everything.

TPTB are doing a great job of setting David up as a guy’s guy.

  • leome

I liked the song. I’m surprised that I’m alone. It’s positive, it’s not sappy, David sounds great. I liked it.

LOL I like it too. Maybe I wouldn’t have it on the album, but I like the song and it has great parts.
It’s like a good version of coronation songs.

  • smartcookie

Well, maybe they can use it for the Winter Olympics next year. It definitely sounds like Cook in his anthemic mode. Which is not necessarily a good thing, but not necessarily a bad thing, either.

I love David Cook, but I think I don’t love the same music he loves. Which makes me sad, but teaches me a valuable lesson about the entire American Idol phenomenon and how easy it is to fall for someone and then get no kick from their music when they’re out there in the real world.

  • wheezie_v

Heh. I just send the link to my brother (song + montage) and he declared it awesome, and he’s pretty dude-esque. Between sports montages and flirting with Eliza Dushku on twitter tonight, I think David’s working on covering the dude angles tonight.
Very catchy chorus on that song.
ETA: smartcookie, I’m kind of lucky in the regard that I didn’t like Cook on Idol until I heard Analog Heart, but I can see how Idol would create the possibility of making that happen.

  • spritely

See, this is the big problem with his schedule. It doesn’t leave him enough time to hook up with a really great woman, stay with her long enough for her to mistreat him, leave him, and break his heart, so that then he can write more of those lyrics I love.

Take some time off, Dave! You’re never going to write those love-lost lyrics if you’re just hanging around with Neal, Andy, Monty, & Kyle.

  • May

    Lifehouse 2.0.
    With crappy lyrics.
    That are cheesy.
Do Cook and Allen have a thing with making each second count?

Yup this fits into that Magic Rainbows/No Boundaries/TFM category. However it definitely isn’t Cook’s usual style and the guy is usually quite brilliant and edgy when he gets to write his own lyrics (listen to Makeover or Let Go on Analog Heart or Mr. Sensitive, Kiss on the Neck or A Daily Adam in the current record). I’m not sure why so many of those 30s clips from his publisher have that cheesy inspirational/motivational theme…maybe he was under the influence of the Magic Rainbow at the time. Heh. Or maybe they were made on special request.

ETA: Despite the cheesiness of the song, I thought the beginning was gorgeous.. Loved the opening chords and Cook’s voice in the beginning…

  • cookcricket

Yay! Definitely a great sports song!

  • fearbear

Generic, as per Cook’s usual recipe.

  • sunchick

Spritely, he DID seem awfully close to a certain ex bass player. Maybe he can take a cue from Maroon 5 and pen an album called “Songs About Joey” chock full of lots of wordy ass extended metaphors about broken strings and lost rhythm.

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

    Yuck.

  • sma11ie

Wow, ladymadonna, and courtesy Folkfan, that list is so detailed. Very cool to see in one place.

I’m not thrilled with the song– it’s got a catchy refrain but the rest seems just okay. But it definitely works great with the montage, and VERY awesome that he is an ESPN darling ;) .

Uplifting, rah-rah Cook is never as convincing or interesting to me as angsty, brooding, and/or bitter Cook.

To be fair, I don’t know that he’s ever written ‘uplifting and rah-rah’ with more than two hours to finish a song. So.

I agree. So many DC songs from this record/written for this record are very much 90% songs for me. What I mean is that they’ve got great elements, and I almost love them, but they have just those couple things (too long on one part, or tempo isn’t quite right, it;s repetitive here, needed a minor lyric tweak there, etc.) that keep them from feeling like a complete work to me.

I blame the rush job, because the album had so much potential to be GREAT, and fell just a little short. You can tell that the live versions are so much better precisely because he had ore time to refine the arrangements, instrumentation, phrasing, in some instances, even tempo a little. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to album 2– really hope he gets to take a little more time to hone the songs this time around.

Oh, loved that intro from the guy about DC and his “group” laying down that track “late late late” last night. But tremendously confusing for us twitter-stalking fans who thought he flew out of Indiana for a brief trip to KC to hang with his bro. Perhaps he flew out to some studio near wherever they tape Baseball Tonight?

Between sports montages and flirting with Eliza Dushku on twitter tonight, I think David’s working on covering the dude angles tonight.

I squeed. I love Dollhouse. They’re tweeting about Celtics. Too cute!

  • Truthiness

It’s positive, it’s not sappy, David sounds great.

Well it wasn’t sappy, that I’ll grant you. But for me (for you) I just find this an entirely forgettable song. It’s not pretty and it’s not interesting. It’s kind of peppy, in a done kind of certain kind of generic rock way.

Like I said in the headlines thread, good on Cook for getting exposure with this song and hopefully even cha-ching. Very smart on both ends and as I like David, I wish him all the best with both of these.

Aaannnnd it just makes me want his new music even more. Maybe I’m wrong to hope for new things from Cook? I hope not. I’ve read a lot here about how Cook had to compromise himself for his album, so maybe I’m just being naive to hope that his next album appeals to me more. Oh well, I still hope so.

  • EmmaJK

I’m another one who loves David’s literate, wordy lyrics and also wanted to smack whoever advised him to be more straightforward. No, no.

The song is perfect for its montagey intent and Cherry Lane appears to be doing their job well for him.

Good for David Cook! 96.5 in CT loves David Cook, as well. They’re still spinning TOML along with LO and CBTM, without fail. They’re showing Kris Allen a lot of love as well. Well deserved for both.

19/RCA has been and still is very good to David Cook. Don’t think for a minute they’re going to forget about him or any other profitable Idol for so-called greener pastures. Not a chance. Cracks me up when the guys say they love DC. lol

At first I thought, hey I really like this, sounds good. But it was just Davids voice singing something new I liked.

But it’s not a bad song for what it was used for. I do like some of the lyrics, and the melody is pretty. …. So 2 1/2 stars!

  • sunchick

Truthiness, I’m sure David’s sound will evolve and progress over time and I’m excited about that, but I do think you either get a person as a songwriter or you don’t. Do you think there’s one song that acts as a lightbulb epiphany, or something like that? IMO, if you don’t care for Permanent or A Daily AntheM or Mr. Sensitive or Lie or We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping, I kinda doubt you’ll ever be down with Cook’s music because those tunes are a nice cross section of his stuff. Two of those songs, ADAM and WOHWWS, were written before AI but both are now played in concert, so if you’ve been checking out David you’ve probably seen the vids. Mr. Sensitive began with a riff he had floating around in his head and a lyrical concept centered around an allegorical story, so it’s also very vintage David. And the latest live incarnations of Lie are some of the best tortured angsty Cook I’ve heard thus far, back catalogue included.

  • CathyMK

I have to agree with this. WOHWWS and the sadly unresurrected Better Never Than Late are some of my favorites from the entire catalog and they predate AI by quite a bit. I have those as my benchmark for Cook material. I expect some new directions, but not radical departures.

  • sma11ie

sunchick, I think I “get” DC as a songwriter, but I don’t necessarily love all the songs you listed. I love Permanent and ADaM, live version of Lie, but I only like the concert version of Mr. Sensitive, and it’s not on my top favorites. I think WOHWWS is WAYYY overrated in DC fandom. Ditto Souvenir. Those two songs are only slightly better than this one. Better Never Than Late has great potential, but I’d need to hear the complete song to judge. I loved Truth and Silver.

But I get what you mean about getting him from getting a cross section of his stuff. I get him enough that I know that his progression won’t lead to certain areas that have no way of ever being DC music. Like, I’m not gonna expect him to suddenly sound like Jason Mraz with the next album, you know?

Oh, the skating long program to BJ is awesome! That couple’s from the US! Are they any good? Would love to see that long program at other competitions, etc.

ETA: Yay, more EMHE pics! A new one: http://twitpic.com/n88fk

One more post to thank jan for the vid. Figure skating and David Cook are my two great loves (well, not really, but you know what I mean). And I lurve that figure skating pair. That was awesome, and a perfect way to end the day.

  • FridayB

I’m kinda surprised so many people dislike it so much. I really like it, but maybe I’m a little delirious from hearing new DC music. Hell, it even inspired me to delurk. I think it’s cool that it was rerecorded (?) for ESPN. I hope I can download the whole song somewhere soon.

  • spritely

In no universe would anything about Mr. Rick Fox be considered small. Heh.

    Bwah, standtotheright.

I do have to defend WOHWWS’s honor. I love it. I loved Mr. Sensitive from the get-go, too, but having heard him sing it so much more passionately in concert I can’t listen to it on the CD anymore.

    edited to correct a misattribution.

  • wheezie_v

I’m with spritely. The moment I saw that first horrible quality youtube version of WOHWWS I fell completely in love. That’s my kind of song, right there.
That said, I think the diversity of the themes in his music bodes well for his ability to license his music for various purposes. So this is a good start and Ladymadonna’s list supports that.

  • May

For all those people who say that Idol fans will gush over anything that their idol puts out, I would say to just read this Cook thread! Cook had a very eclectic style on idol and won some people over with Billy Jean and won others over with songs like Music of the night. I think that’s why there will always be such a wide difference in opinion among his fans about his music.

ETA: OMG Smallie, I’m beginning to think that you and I have almost the same taste in music. Ditto on everything you said except I love Mr. Sensitive studio and live! And I will never get the Honest and Souvenir love, except I love when Kyle goes completely apeshit on the drums at the end of honest.

  • Truthiness

IMO, if you don’t care for Permanent or A Daily AntheM or Mr. Sensitive or Lie or We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping, I kinda doubt you’ll ever be down with Cook’s music because those tunes are a nice cross section of his stuff.

Wasn’t a fan of Mr. Sensitive live version because I hadn’t really heard of it before I heard it live and couldn’t understand what the heck he was saying and the relative crappy quality (sorry mj) of the audio didn’t do anything for me. But I was okay with the album versions of Kiss On The Neck; Mr. Sensitive, and Bar ba Sol. Not fond of the other ones you mentioned, sorry. And things like “We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping,” are just the live versions? And yeah, it all sounds the same kind of tone and guitar and lyrics(?) to me.

    CathyMK said:

I don’t think it’s his best work either, but it’s not a bad song. It shows that he can write different types of songs to fit different occasions, which is important if he wants to write for other people or movies, TV, whatever.

So um, here’s a thought…maybe…DC should write the next AI winner’s song!! 19, an AI winner can write a great winner’s song! Are you listening?

  • sma11ie

The moment I saw that first horrible quality youtube version of WOHWWS I fell completely in love. That’s my kind of song, right there.

I get ya, different strokes, ya know? FWIW I felt like that with the first Anodyne video. It killed me, gah. I was so happy to know DC cowrote it with Neal cuz that is my kinda song, right there. And for context, I don’t even flove too much MWK stuff. Make Me is just aite. I wish DC would do Anodyne in concert more. I fucking love that song, such depressing lyrics. I even bought the song on iTunes just because I needed a good quality version of the song, even though I don’t love Andy’s voice on that song (sorry, like I said, different strokes).

Ooh, Truthiness, have you seen Anodyne? Someone help me provide a better link if this isn’t the “best” one. This is from Conway.

ETA: May, tell me you flove Anodyne and we can be besties ;)

  • SashaB

I love that Billie Jean ice skating clip. I love that athletes, Olypmians, baseball players, swimmers, football players love his voice and love his interpretation of songs. Go David!.

See, I loved WOHWWS from first listen. Loved. Mr. S happens to be the first song on the album I fell in love with. It’s not radio friendly, no, and the chorus is jarring and not particularly melodic, but the progression of the song so works for me. I think it’s Silver (ETA: and Souvenir) that is WAYYY overrated in DC fandom. Agree on Truth.

And, oh yeah, I love basically all the songs on the album — with the exception of CBTM and IDIFY and medium like only for Avalanche (nowhere near the love that others in the DC fandom are bestowing upon it; don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it as a superior piece of songwriting but it’s just doesn’t grab me).

  • seriously

It would be cool if Cook could write the next coronation song. But I think I would be too nervous it would do badly. Not that I doubt his song writing powers.

About the song, it’s very sports themed. Ummm the lyrics are fair it’s Cooks voice that made the song IMO.

  • Trina

This is pretty funny, wheesiev_v. I would love it if David could charm Eliza as much as he has apparently charmed ESPN, but I guess there’s that small matter of her boyfriend? Damn, no lyrics coming from that one, either. Sigh

Though I figured he must have pissed himself when she tweeted back .

holy crap. I just about passed out laughing when I realized how much he actually likes Oreos.

So um, here’s a thought’ ¦maybe’ ¦DC should write the next AI winner’s song!!

Or, how about One Second to Change Your Life as the boot song? Maybe he can become their in house songwriter. He’d definitely do a better job than Kara.

  • Garnetstar

Ha at Eliza tweeting him back. Although I wish he would crush on a girl that was actually available. Katy Perry now Eliza. Too cute for words.

Ehhh the more I listen to the song the more I think that I might like it. It’s a weird song like that. I do like moments like another poster said. It just needs a few tweeks. Although I could swear that is Kyle drumming.

  • EmmaJK

Not in bed yet. Have to defend WOHWWS. Love it. Have from first listen. And the lyrics are SO him. I agree with you on the Anodyne love, though, sma11ie. It’s the only MWK song I like.

Re: Silver. It’s a good song. Not my fav either. I think it’s that one line “second place will never carry me home”, that struck a nerve during his AI season. And I like Avalanche, mainly because he sounds so pretty singing it. LOTM is and has always been my fav on DCTR.

I’m hoping for more AH-like lyrics on CD #2.

  • s3rious

ESPN LOVES David woohoo :D Thanks for posting this mj :)

  • wheezie_v

sma11ie, FWIW, we can completely agree on Anodyne. Amazing song. That’s why I love his diversity as a songwriter. He can give you so many different themes and styles.

  • sunchick

I think WOHWWS is WAYYY overrated in DC fandom.

Honestly (ha, for some reason I’m horribly puntastic lately) I don’t know about overrated in DC fandom. I only know what I like, and why I like it. It took the a capella reworking, for example, to really make me feel the poignancy of Lie, but now it hits me like a punch in the gut. Other people seemed to have fallen in love with that song right away. OTOH, I floved WOHWWS the instant I heard “you’re a broken thing, your cracks are showing through your best attempts at making nice with the world..” and by the time it reached the kickass drum work at the end, I knew it was going into the sunchick’s favorite tunes playlist on my iPod. Sometimes I rewind the “amidst the chaos in the mirror, the lies in lipstick reeeeedddddddddd…” part to hear it again, which is a thing I do with favorite songs. Doesn’t mean it’s necessarily Grammy worthy or for everyone, I guess. It does have a lot of the elements that drew me to Cook’s stuff…interesting percussion, extended metaphors, insightful glimpses into a broken relationship…

Anyway, I probably should have listed more songs to make my point as KOTN is another good example. ANd Anodyne, GUH. Instalove. And yeah, Make Me doesn’t do much for me. The point was, though, that if there’s nothing that Cook has put out thus far turns you on even a wee bit, it’s good to keep in mind that it’s unlikely that he’s going to become someone drastically different as an artist in the future. More evolved, yeah, of course, and more experiemental, I hope, too, but just like I’m pretty sure Ryan Adams is never going to become the male version of Colbie Callait no matter how much married life may mellow him, David Cook is always gonna be David Cook. If that makes sense. I do hope you check out his second album, Truthiness, because if nothing else it will benefit from the luxury of more time to work out the arrangements with the band.

  • spritely

Oh, I just thought. . . .he’ll probably start playing it in concerts soon. And jacking it around until it’s both hotter and cooler, just as he does with all of his songs. I wish I could hear right now how this new song will sound in six months, after DC and NFT have fiddled with it endlessly.

I love Anodyne so much. And Til I’m Blue. I wish he sang them more often.

I wasn’t able to follow the timeline but I think Eliza tweeted first? Anyway, it’s cute.

I didn’t love Mr. S, not until I saw it live. It’s such an unbelievably great song to hear live because of the sudden shift of energy between the verse and the chorus and then into the bridge. I still don’t listen to it as much as the other songs on DCTR, but I have great appreciation for it live.

And I do love me wordy Cook, hence my undying love for all things Analog Heart.

    RE: Oreo twitpic. Bwah!

  • sma11ie

Or, how about One Second to Change Your Life as the boot song?

Noo…it worked great for a sports montage, but that song doesn’t sound appropriate as a boot song to me at all.

But I was okay with the album versions of Kiss On The Neck; Mr. Sensitive, and Bar ba Sol.

Actually, I agree with those choices, Truthiness! I was okay with the album versions of those songs as well. I kinda have to backtrack on what I said about only liking concert version Mr. Sensitive. I meant that I didn’t love it for a while, until I heard them kill it live, but in fact, the studio version is pretty close to their live version (that’s a good thing). There many songs that I can’t listen to on the album anymore, like IDIFY, Lie, LO, CBTM, because the live versions are so much better, that I do appreciate that there are a few songs like Mr. Sensitive, BBS, and KOTN, and ADaM that sound the like the live versions (again, a good thing).

Though I figured he must have pissed himself when she tweeted back

Oh yeah. I’m sure he did. I’m thinking he got out of the movie to tweet us about it, saw Eliza’s tweet to him, crapped himself, and immediately tweeted back. I know he likes the Celtics, but c’mon, the “GO BOSTON” and “they’re my team” bits were a bit of sucking up, no? Hehhehe. I say this very lovingly.

I wasn’t able to follow the timeline but I think Eliza tweeted first? Anyway, it’s cute.

Here’s the breakdown from [one of] your resident twitter stalkers. DC, for whatever reason, started following Eliza last week. She tweeted about two of her fantasy football team players, and DC tweeted to muse that he wouldn’t want to be in that league (she was doing well). Today, Eliza tweeted about the Celtics going all the way. DC is a Celtics fan (has to do with Larry Bird and Adam Cook’s alma mater), and tweeted that Eliza’s tweet about the Celtics made him smile. So Eliza tweeted him back while he was in the movies. This is the tweet that Trina and I think probably made him soil himself before tweeting back to clarify his support for the Celtics.

Ha at Eliza tweeting him back. Although I wish he would crush on a girl that was actually available. Katy Perry now Eliza. Too cute for words.

See, DC doesn’t only go for blondes. Brunettes have a shot, they just have to be INCREDIBLY HOT. Haha. But yeah, unavailable seems to be a theme here. He had a huge crush on Mandy Moore during Idol and now she’s married lol.

May- aka my BFF, awesome, we rock! Hahahha.

Isn’t this Kris Allen’s new song? Or is it a Kris Allen reject?

Honestly, once again I have to convey the HUGEST apology to Rob Cavallo for all the flack I gave him in the past. Because considering the pile of drecky songs he had from which to construct an album, he did a superb job coming up with ten (or so) decent quality ones and a record that is listenable and doesn’t make you want to stab yourself in the brain through your eyesocket (like this track does).

But, seriously, who was brought in to “write” this “song”? An illegitimate offspring of Diane Warren and John Tesh?

  • Garnetstar

But, seriously, who was brought in to ‘write’ this ‘song’ ? An illegitimate offspring of Diane Warren and John Tesh?

I think you give Cavallo way too much credit.

I agree. I think the album ended up with mostly good songs, which is great, but I still blame Cavallo for not being able to love it as much as I wanted to, because I hate the production on more than half the songs. He’s responsible for making 2/3 of the album sound the same (ok, hyperbole, but making a point here) by making them the same tempo, such that it sounds like they’re one long slogging song. And I blame Cavallo, because live, those songs all sound so much more dynamic and different from each other! /end Cavallo rant.

Score! Eliza is now following David. LOL first time it’s happened for our boy. Wipes a tear from my eye. No matter how many times he tweets Katy Perry, she sticks her nose up and never responds or follows. I knew there was a reason I like Eliza and her show Dollhouse. LOL

Yay for DC! Wiping tear from my eye as well. So happy for him haha. Poor DC, Christina Applegate even tweeted him back and still didn’t follow! Katy just ignores him. And he’s met these two. How can they do this to him? Eliza just got mucho points. I think I’ll follow her :)

Well, the melody is pretty forgettable, especially for use as a sports anthem. Give me Magic Rainbow any day over this. It was a good call to leave this song off DCTR.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

Hey, before you guys completely annihilate Zac Mallow (co-writer of this new song), remember he co-wrote “Lie,” arguably the best track on DCTR. Although I do think David is responsible for Lie’s amazing lyrics. So he’s done some good work too LOL! When you guys hear “Lie” done with the band’s arrangment on Carrie’s holiday special, you’ll kvell. It’s a version David worked out on the tour with his band and it’s stunning.

  • sunchick

    Cook/Maida >>>>Cook/Malloy ;)

  • Trina

Why do I get the feeling he’s suddenly going to be tweeting an awful lot about the Celtics now?

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

    Cook/Maida >>>>Cook/Malloy

Absolutely. Lie may be one of those great songs, but on the whole, my favorites are all the Cook-Maida songs: Mr. Senstive, Permanent, Heroes, IDIFY (I even like the album version LOL! LOVE the live version). Totally get Cook’s love for OLP.

I think OSTCYL sounds like a cross between Dream Big and WOHWWS. I like it a lot, but on the whole, I’m glad it didn’t make the album. I do think it’s perfect for ESPN. Very well marketed by Cherry Lane Publishing.

  • Keel

Between sports montages and flirting with Eliza Dushku on twitter tonight, I think David’s working on covering the dude angles tonight.

Dushku’s dating Rick Fox, isn’t she? Sounds like Eliza and David have more than just the Celtics in common. He dated a cougar. She’s got herself a he-cougar.

I’d say it was either this or Heroes on the album, and between the two I think I like Heroes more. But this one really gets me moving too. lol

Isn’t this Kris Allen’s new song? Or is it a Kris Allen reject?

To me the song sounds more like Dream Big than Allen’s new song, but I like Allen’s song melody more. OTOH, I’m more into this one’s lyrics.

  • oceana

Always nice to hear something new from David Cook :)

and it’s fun to read people’s thoughts about his songs. He definitely has a lot of songs out there to talk about, and his lyrics are worthy of discussion too.

  • spring2009

If it was not good enough for David Cook last year, why would it be good enough now? Is it really that hard to either write yourself a song or have someone write one for you? Meh. Would need to hear it without the crap in the background.

  • incarcerate

Love me some new DC and love the song !

  • oceana

“One second to change your life” on one hand sounds too much like Norman Vincent Peale, you know, positive thinking and all that.

But then again, it’s true that one second can change your life, for positive or negative, it’s kind of a profound thought actually. Life is full of “one seconds” and we make split second decisions that sometimes affect the rest of our lives. The driver who leaves the scene of an accident, for instance, changes their life in a bad way.

David had that one second when he was encouraged to audition for AI, and he could have said no, as a rocker he might have thought it was too cheesy, etc., but he said yes, and the rest is history.

Sometimes cliches are not so bad. Inspiration is a good thing.

I’m glad the song wasn’t on the cd, but it’s perfect for a sports montage. And it’s kind of like Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb”, an inspirational song. We can’t be jaded all the time, got to have some inspiration too. :) Actually to me the song sounds something like Daughtry’s “No Surprise.” Got a similar bouncy peppy vibe. Not DC’s deepest song, but not everything has to be deep, angsty, and meaningful. Nice to hear a light song from him.

  • Jolene

Can’t really judge the song with all the noise on top of it, but it does seem very Sports-montages-appropriate, albeit a little repetitive towards the end. I like it, but I like pretty much anything that involves David singing.

I LOVE the favorite songs discussion. Man, I’ve been away from the fandom for a good few months since starting my current job, and this discussion just reminded me how much I really love the songs this man writes. Anodyne is definitely a favorite, and I love that it has a darker vibe than most of David’s other songs. I FLOVE his wordiness on AH (and most of the Axium catalogue) and I miss it somewhat in DCTR (Except for ADAM), so I really hope he turns the lyrical gymnastics back on for album #2. I do love most of DCTR though, with Lie, Heroes, ADAM and Avalanche at the top of my list.
And I still hope against hope we’ll get to hear the whole unreleased album that WOHWWS came from. Someday?

  • tierbee

OK, first of all, twitpics with Oreos and twitpics with hardhat & boots? Love.

Made hubby listen to song without telling who it was, but of course he guessed (hee), he liked it, thought it was great for sports. So, it reaches new non-Cookified ears, this is good. It’s fine, it’s not spectacular, but I like it. Go Cookie :)

Hmm, very late to party but I LOVE Anodyne & ‘Til I’m Blue and will take angsty, dark Cook anyday. Though I’m happy for him if he’s happy and doesn’t have so much dark to draw from, lol. I absolutely love The Truth from AH, I love We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping too. I’m in inordinately fond of Straight Ahead but maybe that’s more because the first time I heard it live I was SO excited to hear something off AH… plus he wanders during that song at many of his shows. So it brings back fond memories of WanderingDave. Still in love with Therapy by Axium… and several other angsty ones :)

Give me back Wordy Dave because I like. I love Mr. Sensitive and ADAM. I do love his current album, though, at least a lot of it… Lie, Avalanche, Heroes, Permanent, ADAM. We also play Declaration a lot, it gets my kids all happy, hee! The songs I don’t like so much? I Did It For You (concert version is GREAT, though), Come Back to Me… hee. Light On is just ok for me.

  • wordnerdarchie

Back to the song “One Second to Change Your Life”, I looked at the original lyrics as posted at Cherry Lane Publishing (that I posted in the yesterday’s headline thread) and realized that Cook changed them for ESPN. So typically David Cook. Yeah!

Here are the revised (ESPN Version) lyrics (minus one verse and additional chorus that was in the original posted lyric. Minor changes made to match what was aired, based upon my hearing the song).

Note that there are some minor little twists that are usually present in a Cook penned lyric. :)

A hundred signs, choices at every turn
hours stacking up with time to burn
this road will keep on going it only stops for you
it’s up to you so make a move

it only takes one second to change your life
    everything can turn
when you blink your eye and day turns to night
one second to change your mind
finally breathe the air that you’ve held inside
one second to change your life

a million skies and all of them are fake
behind your eyes, man you got it made
every guess is young at heart but I’ve been right where you are
it’s the only shape take your own today

it only takes one second to change your life
everything can turn when you blink your eye
    and day turns to night
one second to change your mind
finally breathe the air that you’ve held inside
    one second’s too long

it only takes one second to change your life
    everything can turn
when you blink your eye and day turns to night
one second to change your life
finally breathe the air that you’ve held inside
one second to save your life.

Written by: David Cook, Zac Malloy

ETA: So I don’t know why a verse and chorus repeat were dropped. Maybe for time constraints of the clip? But I found it interesting.

Million skies and all of them are fake
Behind your eyes man, you got it made
Every guess is young at heart but I’ve been right where you are
It’s the old cliche, take your own today

It only takes one second to change your life
    Everything can turn
When you blink your eye, day turns to night
One second to change your mind
Finally breathe the air that you’ve held inside
    One second’s too long
It only takes one second to change your life
    Everything can turn
When you blink your eye, day turns to night
One second to change your mind
Finally breathe the air that you’ve held inside
One second to save your life

-David Cook, “One Second To Change Your Life”

  • BootStar

David Cook sings the hell out of another remarkably mediocre song, but for whatever reason, folks love some cheese with their sports montages, so I think it works well enough. And as a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan, I just loved having David’s voice sung over images of my team. Chase Utley, Jayson Werth and David Cook. It don’t get any better than that! :-)

  • seriously

I think the Maida/Cook colaborations are superior to anything else. Maida knows what hes doing.

  • sma11ie

I like the other Zac Maloy collabs with DC (Lie, LOTM). This one, not so much. Also don’t like his non-collab (CBTM).

  • wordnerdarchie

    s3rious,

You are correct. “it’s the only shape take your own today” , was what was originally posted at Cherry Lane, but he seems to be singing “It’s the old cliche, take your own today” as you’ve stated in your post. Thanks for the update. :)

I want more Neal/David… Neal brings the angst :)

  • sunchick

Yeah, lyrics, finally. Wordnerdarchie and s3rious, you rock. I couldn’t make out anything beyond “one second to change your life, blah blah blah, day turns to night, dah dah dah, Phils win!” I have been holding out for the lyrics before deciding how I feel about the song. On one hand, it’s a little too motivational speakerish for my tastes, and yet, not half as cheesy and pointless as something like No Boundaries, which is pretty much every metaphor you can think of for overcoming obstacles strung together haphazardly. I do like that the one second to change your life concept of the song touches on the age old philosophical fatalism vs. freewill debate (the central theme of Lost, for all you Lost junkies.) “In a blink of an eye, day turns to night”=bad twist of fate=fatalism, while replacing change with save in the last stanza kinda says you still have choices to make to change things, which I guess means in the end, the song comes down on the side of free will. I dig that because fatalism has always seemed so depressing to me.

And as a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan, I just loved having David’s voice sung over images of my team.

Ditto. Also, the Kruk love for Cookie is woo hoo worthy.

Yah, more Neal would be good too. I wish I knew more about Neal, he seems so mysterious.

What happened? Did we Flash Forward here??? It’s now 4:00 pm???

Count me among the Til I’m Blue and Anodyne fans. And I’ll never get the love for WOHWWS, but I like Souvenir. And I actually prefer a lot of the old Axium stuff (faux Eddie Vedder voice notwithstanding) to Analog Heart, which (with the exception of a few songs) doesn’t do a whole lot for me. I love wordy Cook, too, but only when he’s not mixing metaphors and misuing words.

I saw David Gray perform last night at the Tower Theater, and that’s a dude who knows how to write songs. They’re pure poetry, but it’s poetry that works. DC really should listen to his stuff, because he covers a lot of the same themes (heartbreak, death when you’re an unbeliever, etc.).

Oh, and somebody threw DG a Phils cap at the end of the evening, and he put it on for about five seconds, but clearly wasn’t feeling the baseball drama. At. All. Not much on banter, either. That’s what I think makes Cook so exceptional; he’s incredibly personable and comfortable making small talk. Not all artists are. Love me my Davids (Gray and Cook)!

What the eff is going on? What’s with the new user interface re comments?

    Anyway:

I want more Neal/David’ ¦ Neal brings the angst

Yup — Lyrics to Anodyne were all Neal according to Dave. Dave only wrote the music. Neal also brings the rocking jaded bad boy (KOTN) when he writes with the Cook. So yeah, more Neal please. (And yeah, Maida rocks my socks too, because . . . he just does and I lurves me some Mr. S, Heroes and Permanent.) Don’t get the Malloy haterade given that he helped with Lie and LOTM (even if he did also give us CBTM).

  • tierbee

The lyrics to Anodyne are awesome… so are ‘Til I’m Blue, is that all Neal too? I love MWK stuff, helps that I like Andy’s voice but I think it’s Neal’s lyrics that really draw me. While I’m currently in a sort of laid back acoustic vibe sort of mood I really like the darker, moody stuff too. So Neal + David would be a whole lot of win for me. And stuff with Raine Maida is good, too. And pictures with David and Raine because… well. They are kinda hot, you know.

I wish I knew more about Neal, he seems so mysterious.

Doesn’t David call him an enigma? What’s funny is I’ve heard a few times that he’s really accessible and friendly as far as talking to fans — and when we were in Charlottesville he was the one at the end of the bar (yes, I was stealing peeks at them, I mean, could I help it?) chatting with the fans. Seemed really friendly and there’s something oddly… cute about him. I know you’re not going for cute, Neal, but with your extra fuzzy hair in Charlottesville you were cute. Sorry :)

and I actually prefer a lot of the old Axium stuff (faux Eddie Vedder voice notwithstanding) to Analog Heart

I like a lot of Analog Heart but there is a lot of REALLY good stuff in the Axium catalog. Wouldn’t you love to get some of it recorded now?! I love the broody, slower stuff. I f’love Therapy but this is my latest love…

I second that. He is cute in a weird way. The more he trys to look tough the cuter he gets IMHO. Maybe it’s just me.

Awww tierbee and BootStar, my fellow Cooktards I mean fans. hee. WAAAAHHH I can’t listen or watch anything at work on here right now. Boo. BUT I just wanted to chime in on the Cook songwriting etc discussion. I’m listening to Close Your Eyes right now. Love that Cook, especially the YEAH after the 2nd verse-like part. I listen to Incarcerate a lot as well.

I really like the writing on Analog Heart too, the lyrics especially. Fall Back Into Me has interesting lyrics and interesting music & rhythms. Like that one a lot. I like angsty, dark, moody Cook. And Neal Fingtiemann too. I would love some more Cook/Tiemann penned songs, please, on this next album. I think I agree with you guys about Neal’s looks…I do find him attractive! So, I like rockin’ snarly Cook too. Oh I like pretty much all the Cook I’ve heard…EXCEPT, I just realized, some of the rambling, very wordy, vague Axium songs (from the Veder-tone days). OOOO I really like his take on Creep!

I like MWK Anodyne, love Cook’s singing lead too. Circles Anthem, Stuck Under Wheels, One True Thing, Make Me…probably my faves.

DCTR least fave is probably…ummmmmmm…Come Back To Me? I dunno. I like the whole album, but I will often skip that one. I like LIVE Cook & The Anthemic best, over the recorded version!

    OK back to weeeeeerk. Blah.

I like Cook’s songwriting, others do not. I doubt at this point whether either group will ever change opinions about it, a year after the record drop. That’s just fine with me. There are certain posters here that I skip over now anyway, since I know basically what will be said. I’m happier that way, too. :)

  • sma11ie

cheesehead, I say this lovingly, but fearbear has every right to “bother listening” to DC’s song and commenting on hating it here. So she doesn’t like it, doesn’t like DC’s stuff in general. No biggie. I’d comment/respond if I felt there was something worth discussing, but in this case, not so much.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing this tonight– is that confirmed btw?

Wait, there’s a chance we could hear it tonight? I’m excited if that’s true.

  • FolkFan

Thanks for posting my list, LadyM! I was having trouble getting on the internet last night and definitely could not have done it.

I like the song, and do think that it is a nice fit for sporting events. Thank you also to everyone who hunted down the lyrics. I had a feeling that there had been an edit leading to a repeat of one of the choruses, but that was just my sense from it. Anyway, I love that these ESPN guys seem to really like DC, and that he’s getting more chances to have his music be a part of big sporting events—nice for getting his music and voice out there to sports fans, but also, let’s face it, as a sports fan himself, DC has got to be geeking out in a very, very big way.

One other thing: Hey, Tierbee! Didn’t get to say this the other night before the Extreme Makeover thread closed, but it was great to meet you in Charlottesville! Here’s hoping that DC adds a Washington show….

  • tierbee

let’s face it, as a sports fan himself, DC has got to be geeking out in a very, very big way.

That honestly makes me happier than anything — that he gets to do all this cool stuff when he’s such a sports fan. Love it.

Here’s hoping that DC adds a Washington show’ ¦.

We could have a reunion! Shazzer and vascot… good times. Charlottesville was one great day, wasn’t it? So nice meeting everyone.

Wait, there’s a chance we could hear it tonight? I’m excited if that’s true.

Ooh, we might hear it tonight? Yeah, I’ll be watching. My hubby is a Philly fan anyway. He’s going to be like… “Damn, girl is *biddable* tonight letting me watch baseball all night long.” Then the song will come on and… eyebrow raise exasperated look comes my way. Ah, well. I could squish him anyway, he let me go to five shows this year and though I think he was worried I was flinging panties (giggle, no way dude)… he was cool and let me have some fun.

  • wellhesback

Can someone with cable tell me – Did ESPN use the song again tonight (Weds)?

  • offside

I’m in the group who thinks the song is perfect for the sports package it showcased but am glad it didn’t make the record. I’m also in the group that was disappointed to hear the advice given to him that he needs to be more straightforward in his songwriting. I love wordy, metaphorical Cook. IMO, it’s what makes his songwriting
unique. I hope TPTB don’t squash this gift in exchange for a more ” radio friendly ” sound.
I’m also hoping for some Cook/Tiemann collaborations on the next record; even Neal’s harder stuff such as ” Call To Arms ” is really melodic.
