ETA: You Tube clip of David singing “Time of My Life” during the Oprah taping today, as the Olympians file out into the crowd. You can’t see him but you can hear him: HERE.

A review of today’s show is here.

There was a surprise guest at the end, when à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner David Cook came out to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Time of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to the departing athletes, who high-fived members of the public as the medalists exited through the middle of the pavilion.

David Cook will appear on the season premier of the Oprah Winfrey Show, Monday September 8, according to FOX News:

It’s all about Oprah right now. The first news is that Oprah will tape her big Olympic special in Chicago on Wednesday with all the Olympians. “American Idol” winner David Cook is going to be the only musical performer on the show, which airs Sept. 8 and kicks off Oprahà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new season.

Oprah’s Olympic-themed show features 175 athletes and is taping today at the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicagoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Millennium Park.

Cook skipped the after-show party last night in Green Bay, WI so he could fly out to Chicago to tape the show today.

“Time of My Life” has managed to stay on the charts all summer, assisted by NBC using the song in their nightly re-caps during the Beijing Olympics. The little coronation song that could, “Time of My Life” will get yet another sales boost when David performs it on the mighty Oprah Winfrey Show.

It fell off of the Top 50 downloads chart this week, but look for it to possibly re-enter the Top 50 the week after his Oprah appearance…

Sidenote: I’m hearing that David Cook won’t be making a live appearance on next week’s charity telethon Stand Up To Cancer. He’s made a taped message that will be featured on the live broadcast…

I love Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park… it’s a great venue! But this show is actually filming this morning and effed up a lot of people’s commutes! Oprah, what about the little people! LOL.

  • gingerly

Just think if and when the olympics come to town (yeah, I’m hoping we get them). Chicago is a great city and I’d love to see it showcased for the world to see.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Gingerly, I think we have a good shot! :)

  • Jolene

This is amazing exposure for David, and even if I’d rather he got it with his own music, TOML is his current single and does get his name out there. Plus, all the Olympics tie-ins are truly giving the song a second wind, something I could’ve never guessed when Magic Rainbows first came out.

Anyways, hope we get some spoilers out from today’s taping.

Sidenote: Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hearing that David Cook wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be making a live appearance on next weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s charity telethon Stand Up To Cancer. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taped a pre-recorded message that will be featured on the telethon

Son of a… Really? He was supposed to be in the celebrity phone bank. Did it get cancelled because of the Oprah appearance?

  • Trina

It really is amazing. I feel like a proud mama. I would be happy if he went on Oprah any day this season doing anything at all but getting to sing on the season premiere is mindboggling. Reggie Hamm must be FREAKING out.

Son of aà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ Really? He was supposed to be in the celebrity phone bank. Did it get cancelled because of the Oprah appearance?

I heard that from someone who talked to his publicist. The publicist didn’t exactly say that he wasn’t going to appear–just that he made a taped appearance. The Idols don’t have a show that night…maybe he’ll be there anyway…

  • grrrr

The publicist didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t exactly say that he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t going to appearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’just that he made a taped appearance.

I suppose that could be the thing the Top 10 was doing?

    maybe heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be there anywayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Well, I hope so, in any case! =)

  • mac

OMG! OPRAH! That is huge. I know that a lot of fanbases write and try to get their idol favorite on Oprah. Congratulations David Cook. Has any other Idol contestant been on Oprah? I think maybe Carrie was?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Carrie, Kelly, Fantasia have been on Oprah. I think Ruben and Clay were on Oprah. Jennifer Hudson has been on Oprah.

Usually an Idol will make an appearance once they’ve established themselves as musical artists. Fantasia starred in Oprah’s Broadway show, so she’s made a couple of appearances to promote “Color Purple”. Jennifer Hudson appeared to promote “Dreamgirls”

Are there any Oprah fans out there who can shed some light on this subject? Has Oprah ever had an Idol on her show right after their win?

  • Jolene

I would be happy if he went on Oprah any day this season doing anything at all but getting to sing on the season premiere is mindboggling.

Indeed. I didn’t even know it was that much of a bigger deal until I saw the special commercial they made for that episode, and some of the press coverage for it.
Magical stuff happening to that rainbow.

Plus, You know, two Cookie appearances to look forward to in the coming week? I sure ain’t complaining! LOL

BTW – Someone elsewhere said Oprah hand picks all her guests. Is that true? There is nothing substantial linking TOML to the Olympics… It wasn’t on the official soundtrack and NBC only used it twice. Someone picked David for that show for some reason, and I wonder who that was.

    Nice going, Cookie!

  • Aileen

I think Ruben and Clay were on Oprah.

You’re right MJ. They were both on in June of 2003 when their singles dropped on the same day. They were there to promote the singles. At that time, Idol was new and the Ruben/Clay drama was interesting.

Great news for Cookie! I can’t wait to find out in what context TOML will be performed. I have so many “perfect scenarios” in my mind and don’t want to be disappointed, but any Oprah exposure is a win in itself.

  • shell29

Are there any Oprah fans out there who can shed some light on this subject? Has Oprah ever had an Idol on her show right after their win?

I’m not a big Oprah fan myself, but I can’t remember any other Idol winner appearing on her show so soon after their win.

This is great exposure for DC!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

As a matter of fact, Justin Guarini appeared on Oprah September 16, 2002, two weeks after the first Idol finale. I cannot find anywhere that Kelly appeared after her win, though.

  • spritely

Wow! I just watched that commercial for the Oprah show. She will have a HUGE audience for that. This is such an honor for him. His mom and Andrew will cry. :)

  • http://mjsbigblog.com lucyfan

Way to go, Cookie! So happy for him. :clap_tb:

  • cheese

It’s great for the rainbow, but part of me sort of wishes they would just play the studio version of the song over a montage or something! Oh well, I guess Oprah gets what Oprah wants. It’s not as if David even has the day off today. He’ll probably have to be back in Michigan by 4:00 for the M&G or even earlier if he has press. Geesh! Still, it’s cool that they chose TOML over something from the official NBC Olympics soundtrack.

I’m a little disappointed about the SU2C thing, since it was suggested by previous press releases that he would be there in person working the phone banks. I’m not sure how they plan to cram 12385 celebrities into a one hour show anyway, so I guess I wasn’t expecting to get more than a glimpse of him.

In other David news, Amazon.com has put up a mysterious November 14 release date for the CD (Friday? Really?) I know that November is crammed with new releases, but this would really make no sense. Way to give your Idol 3 days to make his first week sales! I can see the “Worst selling opening week for an Idol evah!” headlines already. Hopefully, it’s just an error or the people at RCA don’t have an actual calendar or something.

  • blove

    David Cook Updates:

CD Release – I received this notice from Amazon about my order:

David Cook (Artist) “New Release (featuring “The Time Of My Life”)
    (2008)” [Audio CD]
    Estimated arrival date: 11/19/2008 – 11/21/2008

Oprah Show – I expected this to happen, I think he is teetering on potential equivalent success as Carrie Underwood, and he has a lot of celebrity fans. As for Idols on Oprah, I believe he will be the first Idol to appear so soon after his win with the exception of Reuben/Clay. I believe Oprah puts her stamp of approval on the production staff’s line up of guests for her shows. Moreover, Oprah’s show is most often thematic (I Tivo it because I love Oprah!) So, I’m sure the production staff first thought to have TOML play as a lead in and background music track and the lightbulb went off to get Cook on board. I would have loved to have been in that production staff meeting. I’m sure Reggie Hamm is over the top thrilled as well – the song has universal themes that we all can relate to.

I’m soooo happy for David Cook! I love the guy!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

I can see the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Worst selling opening week for an Idol evah!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ headlines already.

cheese, you’re on that ledge again! lol

    Not gonna happen, methinks. ;)

So I was down at Grant Park Saturday night with my parents for the Jazz Fest (my dad is a huge jazz fan, I go for the company and the awesome food and wine my parents bring). They started talking about Oprah and the Olympians. They don’t watch Oprah, they don’t watch much but sports and documentaries but they’ll be watching this show…Yeah this is freaking huge!!!

  • Trina

The Amazon date is an error. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a new release date on there in the past for a day that’s not a Tuesday. Supposedly Kelly Clarkson’s CD has been pushed back to December so I could see him getting her inital 11/18 date.

Re: SU2C. I’m just happy he’ll be a part of it at all. His name is still being used in the articles that mentions even a small portion of the stars and the SU2C website updated this week with this

A spectacular line up of talent including Jennifer Aniston, James Taylor, Scarlett Johansson, Meryl Streep, David Cook, Christina Applegate, Lance Armstrong, Jack Black, Kirsten Dunst, Charles Barkley, America Ferrera, Halle Berry, Hilary Swank, Forrest Whitaker, Jimmy Fallon, Keanu Reeves * will make personal appearances on the show. These celebrities and more will educate you, move you and entertain you. They will also be on hand to answer your calls in the celebrity phone bank.

Of course things can change but I do like that he’s highlighted.

ETA: Team Cookie sent out a MySpace bulletin just now

I believe Oprah puts her stamp of approval on the production staffà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s line up of guests for her shows.

Oh, you better believe she does! I’m just so thrilled for him. But what a hectic day today. And this means I now have to watch Oprah on Monday. I haven’t watched her show in forever.

Just read this on d-c.org, from a Chicago fan who drove over to listen:

11:25am CST: He just finished singing TOML!!

He is wearing faded black jeans and a black shirt. Penny is parked NEXT TO HIS CAR!!

    Link:

    http://www.david-cook.org/index.php?showtopic=13354&st=40

(wonder how they know it’s his car, lol!)

  • AInoob

WTG, Cookie! I’m happy with any positive exposure he gets, particularly if it gets his name out there to an audience that may have no idea who he is. I’m looking forward to the SU2C and Oprah shows (which I’m thinking, because she’s got all those Olympians there may pull in some viewers who normally wouldn’t watch).

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

(wonder how they know ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s his car, lol!)

Apparently, the one giving the update is a cop. :laugh_tb:

this is such a HUGE thing.
the oprah show is broadcasted world wide and it’s the season premier for god sake.
i live abroad and oprah’s season premiers always make the news here too. it’s a media event that is always talked about.
    this is beyond AWESOME
i’m so glad it’s happening to david because frankly i don’t think that there is an artist out there that deserve it more than him.
the entire music industry has failed me over the years but david’s music showed me that there is still hope.
i’m certain that this man will never dissapoint me and from now on i will support what ever he puts out there.
    i’m his fan for life!

  • aidc08

This is HUGE! So Exciting! Whenever Oprah waves her magic wand over something it has amazing success. TOML will reach Platinum soon no question!

  • mac

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure Reggie Hamm is over the top thrilled as well

It would have been amazing if Reggie had been able to be on the show also to tell his wonderful story about the song.

  • gingerly

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jy_qA93nYLA is his performance today :) Can’t see him though.

  • spritely

Well, that was gorgeous. I say, after listening 4 times. :) I never did spot him, but I hope we will on tv. In one of the comments on the vid the person who posted it says, At the end, Oprah just said “Here’s David Cook”! The crowd went CRAZY!
    Yay!

  • Jolene

You can’t really see David, but oh man can you hear him… He sounded amazing, and TOML was slightly changed up yet again.

I’m so very proud of him right now, that was a great performance, and the actual visuals on the show itself will only make it better, I bet.

BTW – reports from D-C.org state that he did indeed get to interact with the Olympians. He also had his red hat available, so mayhaps it has some new autographs?

  • EmmaJK

Dang it, he gets me teary more often than even my own kids. He sounded absolutely fantastic. I love that quote up above. Just plain “Here’s David Cook” – even better that the crowd went crazy. Gah, I’m so freaking happy for him.

Methinks Platinum may not be too far off.

  • jpfan

Is he actually on stage singing in the clip? It looks like the Olympians are walking into the crowd and everyone else is filing out. Is this like where’s Waldo because I can’t spot him at all on the stage.
I’ll bet a better video turns up pretty quick of him singing since I do see tons of cameras.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

    http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2008/09/oprah-mayor-dal.html

Oprah, Mayor Daley and David Cook pay tribute to Olympic champs

There was a surprise guest at the end, when à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner David Cook came out to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Time of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to the departing athletes, who high-fived members of the public as the medalists exited through the middle of the pavilion.

  • AInoob

If you watch at the very beginning, he is right in the front of the stage with his guitar (below the flag on the left). He is right behind the woman in red that goes across the front of the stage.

  • Joanna

I was in the same location of Millennium Park as the person shooting the video about a month ago for an opera concert. I would have much rather seen David Cook and Olympians, even if The Oprah was involved.

  • gumby

Thanks, AInoob, I can spot him and his left-handed guitar strumming. He’s just to the right of the “Believe” banner in the very front of the stage wearing a black shirt.

I’ll bet this is part of the closing credits of the show, I just hope they don’t have to cut too much of it off. Pretty awesome gig for Cookie.

ETA: And by “right”, I mean as a video viewer’s right.

  • Jolene

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll bet this is part of the closing credits of the show, I just hope they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to cut too much of it off.

Yeah, that’s pretty much my only concern.
Elsewhere I’ve seen some disappointment that David wasn’t interviewd, but I guess I was never expecting he would be. To me, this was obviously more about TOML and it’s fit with the Olympics theme, than it was about David. And that’s fine – the exposure will be great, and if it gives TOML a sales bump – even better.

I don’t even care that they’ll probably not show too much of David during the performance (likely they’ll cut away to the athletes in the crowd) because much like the use of TOML in montages, this is about the song and the context, and I truly feel like this is far above anything we could hope for from a coronation song.

  • AInoob

ITA, Jolene. I doubt he’ll get much screen time at all since the show is supposed to be about the Olympians and he’s not even mentioned in Oprah’s commercial for the premiere. But as long as his name is mentioned, I’m a happy camper :)

  • sma11ie

Wow, this is exciting news for the magic rainbow!

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even care that theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll probably not show too much of David during the performance (likely theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll cut away to the athletes in the crowd) because much like the use of TOML in montages, this is about the song and the context, and I truly feel like this is far above anything we could hope for from a coronation song.

Aww, I agree that the cameras will likely pan out to the athletes in the crowd, but I do hope he gets a significant portion of camera time during the few minutes of the song. I mean, if they’re not even gonna show him on camera, what’s the point of flying him out there for a live performance in the middle of his grueling tour schedule– on a show day no less? I’d be pissed if that were the case. They could’ve accomplished much the same by playing the track in the background like the NBC montages. I do get what the poster upthread said about “what Oprah wants, Oprah gets”, so I’m managing my expectations, but still… what does Cook say? Hope for the best, prepare for the best (by watching it), but expect the worst.

  • ptslittlecomment

Thanks, AInoob, I can spot him and his left-handed guitar strumming. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just to the right of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Believeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ banner in the very front of the stage wearing a black shirt.

That could be him I guess, but I think he is on the left. (stage right). If you look closely at the video, just before Oprah says “say hi to the crowd” someone walks in that direction with what looks like a guitar. They then move behind the camera as the athletes walk offstage. Cameras in the audience point in this direction as well. I could easily be wrong of course, but it looks like the guy on the right is talking to the athletes.
The real problem is the videographer isn’t staying on one place long enough to get a fix on what’s happening onstage :sad_tb:

  • Hazehel

It looks to me like AInoob is correct. You can see him standing there with the guitar from the beginning to the end – for example if you freeze-frame at 2.31, he is still there after all the athletes have gone from the stage. Must be watched in high quality mode to see though.

  • Trina

That article posted above mentions he was a surprise guest, so I would assume that’s the reason he’s not being mentioned in commercials..or this may have been a last minute thing. I have NO concerns because for me just the fact the fact that he was asked to do this is far beyond anything I could have imagined. I don’t think he will be cut off because it’s not like it’a a live show, they will have time to edit properly.

  • gingerly

I had to run to the store this afternoon. As soon as I got in the car, TOML starts playing. After they were talking about David Singing for Oprah’s show this morning. They said how awesome he was and how great it was that he got asked to sing (of course, I’m in Chicago…probably wouldn’t be mentioned elsewhere).

Are there any Oprah fans out there who can shed some light on this subject? Has Oprah ever had an Idol on her show right after their win?

Until recently, I was a pretty regular watcher of the Oprah show. I cannot recall any Idol appearing after their win.

Actually Ruben has been on twice with Clay and Clay was on once on his own.

May 13 2003- Hour long Special with Oprah on the AI lot and backstage for the taping of the Final 3 Results show.

June 10 2003 – Full hour with Ruben & Clay on the date of their first singles release.

June 10 2003 – Ruben and Clay spend a second hour with Oprah on her “After The Show” program on the Oxygen Network.

May 10 2005 – Wildest Dreams Special- Clay, Ty Pennington and Derek Jeter fulfill some dreams. Clay visited a high school in Lincoln Nebraska and in front of the whole school he surprised a set of twin girls with special needs by inviting them to travel on the Wildest Dreams bus with him to the Oprah Show. Clay sang “I Will Carry You” during the show with the live audience and surprised the twins with full college scholarships and then Ty Pennington offered to furnish their dorm rooms from his line of furniture.

  • spritely

Thanks for trying, reinharv. :) For some reason I’m still not seeing him. I’ll just wait for the show–or one of the dozen other vids that may pop up.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

I see him! Middle right. Mostly I see the guitar. Look for the woman blowing kisses in the beginning. He’s right behind her!

I hope they don’t cut this off on TV… He took the trouble of flying all the way there in the middle of touring. I hope they give him the respect he deserves.

I realize it was an honor that he was asked but he’s no slouch either, and it’s an honor to them that he is showing up in person to sing the song!!!

(Not a fan of Oprah, can you tell?)

  • Jolene

I hope they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t cut this off on TVà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ He took the trouble of flying all the way there in the middle of touring. I hope they give him the respect he deserves.

It’s been speculated that since the song is already a shortened version and the show is pre-taped and not live, that they probably timed it so the song actually fits… We’ll wait and see. As long as they give DC a proper introduction and show enough of the song (all of it, preferably), I’m good. For me, it’s more about the sales bump for TOML than about winning over new fans… let’s just say that most likely the fans who will love David for TOML are not his target audience for his own music, IMO.

  • dv
  • AInoob

Nice find, dv! I checked out Nastia Liukin’s myspace pictures, its so cool that she’s a fan (I love seeing celebs/athletes be fans of other celebs). Well, I’m assuming she’s a fan because aside from the photo with Oprah and the other gymnasts, she only posted pictures from the Oprah taping of her with David, Kobe, Jason Kidd, and Cullen Jones.

  • Trina

He’s in the commercials for this now! I just saw it a little while ago. YAY!!

  • Jolene

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s in the commercials for this now!

Really? Yay! Wish I could see that. Do they just say his name of show him perform too?

  • Trina

It happened so quick and I think my brain froze! I was in the next room and heard the commerical come on so I figured it would be the commercial I saw previously, then I heard “and a special performance.. American Idol David Cook” (or it may have been a special guest) I ran quickly into the room and I did see a flash of some type of shot of him.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Yeah, they’ve updated her website. You can see a clip at the end.

  • Trina

EEEE! I missed the Oprah hug in the one in the one I saw! Oh my god I’m giddy :jittery_tb:

  • reinharv

Wow. Ophrah announced on the show that the 2008 American Idol, singing the “signature song of the Bejiing Olypmics, David Cook singing Time of My Life. David also got some high-fives from a couple of the athlethes. I bet he loved being able to sing that song for them!
