I totally agree, sma11ie! That’s one of my very favorite things about the lyrics on Analog Heart, and probably one of the reasons I was a little disappointed with DCTR, because I was expecting more lyrical twists like on AH. Let’s hope DCTR2 revisits the lyrical twistings!

I know the occasional lyric was just forced and was like fingernails on slate in mid song on his early stuff, but so many were just great: real song poetry.

Heh. Unless you’re with seriously and sunchick, who think he’s singing, “I’ll be naked with you” or some-such . But no, I actually couldn’t make out the “I’ll be right there with you” part at all so I’m crossing all my appendages that there’s something slightly more profound that he’s declaring there. I have no huge problems with skies falling, worlds turning (or not), but having the big payoff simply be that the guy is just “there”… seems very anticlimactic. I’m hoping it’s “I’ll be [insert something interesting], and each line, the [insert something interesting] will vary slightly, and include some twist of words– just the way we like our Cookie lyrics.

You know, for example, what he does here:

“With your backbone is stuffed inside your purse” vs “With my backbone stuffed inside your purse”,

or “A warning sign of mistakes made/The kind that you learn from” vs “an open mind/For mistakes made/The kind that you burn from”

or “Take me and I’m yours/I only want you anymore/I kiss the ground” vs “You leave me when I’m yours/’Cause you don’t want me anymore/I hit the ground”

Okay… I think I kind of forgot my point there cuz I just got lost re-reading Analog Heart lyrics. Sure, there are some hokey lyrics here and there a co-writer could’ve helped… but 85% of those lyrics are really solid! What was my point again? Oh yeah, I really hope that line isn’t simply, “I’ll be right there with you”.

If you think about it, “Can you breathe tonight as the air is leaving you”, sounds pretty lyrically bland, but some of the rest of that song’s lyrics are pretty cool: “You broke when I just bent/You cried; I never meant to break you down”. Same with Declaration: “It’s my declaration to anyone who’s listening” isn’t very complex, but we have cool parts like: “I’ll take you just the way you are/imperfect words inside the perfect song” (or whatever those lyrics really are since we don’t have official ones).

Uh-huh, uh-huh – I’ll cling on to that. And you’re right Smallie, there were some good lyrics in the verses on DCTR.

I just love DC’s lyric writing, from Axium, through AH and it can be seen in snatches on DCTR, but I wish he’d give it full reins again. That’s where his best artistry has centred so far in his career, IMO anyway…

Maybe I’m just a lyrics gal even more than a music one.

I read smallie’s post above so I’ve been appeased somewhat, but I do have to agree with fadetowhite that the cliche lyrics are kind of disturbing. Like in the first few seconds of the song we hear, it’s not David’s voice. It’s sounds exactly like Andy Skib’s voice.

Interesting… I guess everyone hears differently, but that sounded like David to me– not even distorted David, just soft David. I dunno though, I could be wrong. I’d just be surprised that Andy made it into a demo since I haven’t heard anything about him being a part of this writing/demo-recording process so far.

I did have to go to the bathroom and get myself together. It’s all rather embarrassing, I don’t tend to get all giddy around singers. I don’t know what it is about this guy… I did survive hugging him once. I had a good year last year. I never got to hug Duran Duran OR Michael Jackson… that’s the last time (what, 6th grade?) that I got this invested in a singer. Which makes me feel even dorkier. But what the hell, it made for some really good times meeting some really cool people.

(Then my sister called me a stalker because I went to “so many” shows. Pfft. 5 shows does not a stalker make, and if I’m a stalker I suck at stalking because I didn’t even bother him at the restaurant when he was eating his grilled cheese & chili.)

Someone needs to write an Ode to Dave’s Lips. Because they are purty. There can be a stanza about his skin, too. Because no boy needs skin like that. He looks so young in person, and slimmer. He made me feel a little old. Then I got over it
