Album Teaser

  • Joyed

I am super excited, lol! I am liking how Paper Heart sounds recorded – something I’ve kinda worried about is how I’ll feel about the recorded versions compared to the live versions (which I’ve listened to a lot.) I want them to have a similar vibe to the live, but more polished:)

Cool that they actually gave a teaser the first day weekday after the New Year – I was wondering if they would actually post something that soon and they did – yay!

  • ladymadonna

    Why hello there, Clark Kent.

  • fadetowhite

Are you excited for some new David Cook music?

    Yes!

    Where is it?

Seriously – I love this teaser; love the guitar on Paper Heart; love the sound of the new song; love the fact that they have deliberately emphasised him as in the studio, deeply involved in the recording process and in control…

    What’s not to love?

Now – when is it coming out?

  • Trina

OMGZZZ I need this now! Holy crap the glasses *drool*

  • Buffynut

I’d say the promo has begun! Great teaser!

  • CindyM

Congrats to the Cook fans!! Your patience is being rewarded!@

  • Incipit

I’m shocked, I tell you – shocked. There’s been plenty of time for a screencap of that page of lyrics for that DNA song, “Goodbye to the Girl” – what’s the hold up? *snerk*

Seriously – very nice little clip – just Matt Serletic and David in the studio this time – deep into the process…and I do like the sound of both songs that were on the video…cool New Year’s Gift!

ETA: Not just Matt and David – that’s Andy playing the right-handed guitar – no tats.

  • ItsMyT1me

OMG! Yes, yes, yes. So excited for this record. Paper Heart is amazing. Can’t wait for the studio version. Goodbye to the Girl, a DNA collaboration… please say it makes it on to the record (and not as a bonus track!) Love it. So Happy.

Can you tell we Cook fans have been desperate waiting for a bone? LOL. Off to watch a few more times…

  • ItsMyT1me

Incipit, no hold up. You’re just not looking in the right place :)

    http://twitpic.com/3mpsdk

  • Valentin432

David Cook is a tease, if he’s still recording, I won’t expect a release until may.

  • BootStar

Does David wear contact lenses normally? ;-)

Seriously, I think I like what I heard. Which one is the new single?

  • Incipit

Hah!! I knew it – I know how fast the Wordnerds are – thanks,ItsMyT1me, I’m off to disseminate. *snerk* @Myself.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Ha ha…I just capped the lyrics. :).

  • wordnerdarchie

Incipit! LOL! Besides the twitpic, a twitlonger was posted over 37 minutes ago. Do you need glasses? ;)

  • sunchick

Excuse my sudden outburst, but NEWLYRICSNEWLYRICSNEWLYRICS! Be still my paper heart! *off to analyze screencap*

  • fadetowhite

Okaaay – and I like those lyrics too…

The DNA song has to make the album…

  • wordnerdarchie

There are soaring melodies, clear David voice up front & center, PIANO!!!.

    *big sigh of relief*

  • suenigma

I have no coherent thoughts or comments at this time. Flail!!!!!

Great melodies. Check. Beautiful lyrics. Check. Sounds great. Check. Looks mega-hot. Check. Happy fan. Check.

  • cwm

Congratulations to all of you ever-so-patient DC fans!! I like what I hear. Looking forward to this album coming out.

  • ladymadonna

Interesting that the lyrics Dave is singing in the first snippet don’t seem to match the cap for Goodbye to The Girl. Wonder if what we’re hearing at the beginning is actually a third song. Paper Heart we know since they unveiled it at Busch Gardens in August. But all we know about Goodbye to The Girl is that it’s Cook/Tiemann/Skib and they seemed to be excited about it. (Or maybe I’m just suffering cognitive dissonance because I expected Goodbye to The Girl to be up-tempo). No matter, I like what I hear. A Lot.

Much to speculate upon. Love the intensity throughout that teaser. The man is working hard.

  • GreenHippo

FINALLY – a tiny snipet teaser, this should hold me over for a day or so. It has been way too long, WAY TOO LONG.

  • sma11ie

ARGHH, can’t see the vid until I get home tonight :((((.

GLASSES! A DNA song! That is all for now… at least til I can see that damn vid. Sobs. How long is it? Any more deets you guys can offer poor me =P?

  • dhunken

I am a bad fan for feeling…..I want MORE…. How about a whole song. :-) This is great but I want Awesome!!! Awesome = full song

And agree with Greenhippo …..WAY TO LONG!!!!

  • Indigobunting

OK, why is Cookie taking on the Danny Gokey look  When I first looked at the pic I thought it was Danny.

So excited for some new Cook music!

    Thanks MJ for the snippet.

  • Incipit

Incipit! LOL! Besides the twitpic, a twitlonger was posted over 37 minutes ago. Do you need glasses?

*snicker* Just looking in the wrong places, wordnerdarchie, it’s all good now.

I would love to know if the lyric from :18 to :26 is part of the DNA song – or another track – it’s an intriguing little scrap – with the piano too.

Who’s to say you’ll never run
Who’s to say that I’m not already gone
    Who’s to ….

    But it’s a happy day.

ETA – I see ladymadonna has the same wonderment as I do – they seem as if they could be from different songs. More mysteries. I love it.

  • wordnerdarchie

Indigobunting, he’s had those glasses a very long time, we saw them on tour in 2009, and when he visited KC, as well as other occasions.

I look at it this way, Gokey was emulating Cook. ;) Hahaha

  • girlygirl

    I didn’t know David wore glasses :)

The little I heard sounds great! Now, can they just finish recording and release the album? Please and thank you

  • ladymadonna

    Let the Zapruder-level dissection begin…

Is that choir I hear swelling in the background at about 0:26, right after “Who’s to say that I’m not already gone?” Children’s choir perhaps?

  • progression

How long is it? Any more deets you guys can offer poor me =P?

It’s about a minute long. Done in the same style as the first two teasers – black and white, a series of short clips of Dave and Serletic in the studio. Audio is all snips of music, no talking. Dave is all serious business in this one, clearly meant to assure fans he’s working hard not just working out, lol. Looks like a lot of mixing type work going on. Dave is wearing his glasses a lot and making serious Dave face.

  • wordnerdarchie

Girlygirl, he doesn’t wear his glasses when performing, or when out in public. But if you’ve seen his eyes (they can be really red at times which I think gets irritated w/contacts – I think he wears them) he should just wear glasses more often. :)

  • wellhesback

Love everything about this! Thanks MJ for the thread.

was that Dave playing guitar? didn’t look left handed. or I could just be not seeing it right cause I’m so excited.

  • tigervixxxen

I’m loving the new teaser video. I already loved Paper Heart so it nice RCA is letting us hear its existence on youtube. I’d assume the first song is Goodbye to the Girl. David gave us that title and he doesn’t usually offer those types of details. Plus why be intentionally confusing when trying to “sell” the album? I love how that song sounds too with the piano. I’m trying hard not to go batty for details. But this was a nice little treat to start the month and year. Hope more is to come soon.

  • sunchick

Those glasses are more Ben Folds than Gokey. Nothing against Teh Gokey, but I have me a particular weakness for some nerdy Clark Kents. And when you add the fully realized Cookie Neutron ‘do, well… he’s a walking Pixar character or something. <3 Damn you Cook, I'm supposed to be working… *peers over shoulder, then hits play again*

Who’s to say that I’m not already gone

    Subliminal Cookson FTW.

  • HappyDaisy

progression:…clearly meant to assure fans he’s working hard not just working out…Dave is wearing his glasses a lot and making serious Dave face.

Your description made me laugh out loud, progression. Very accurate! :)

  • bridgette12

Love the teaser, sounds like it’s going to be a great album. I just wonder when is the single going to be released.

  • sma11ie

Thanks, progression– just 1 minute? Sigh. Just once I wished David would surprise us and pull a Brooke White-blog or an Archie-vlog style update on us and not be so short and sweet =P. Love y’alls adorable ramblings, Brooke and Archie =P. Still looking forward to it.

I look at it this way, Gokey was emulating Cook.

LOL, no one was emulating anyone. Danny and Cook both wear glasses–seems Danny wears his over 90% of the time, and Cook wears his less than 10% of the time. And I’ve never seen Danny in big frames like that– his are usually more rectangular. If anything, Andrew Cook I think has pretty similar glasses to Danny…

But yeah, Cook’s had those nerdy Wayfarer-style glasses for at least a year, even though he hardly ever wears them in public. It’s actually kinda cool to me that he had that style of glasses so long ago, cuz while those nerdy glasses started becoming hipster cool a while back, the trend has become much more mainstream just in the past year. How fashion forward, Mr. Cook, that you had them so early =P. Heh, I heart those glasses on guys. LOL, sorry, I can ONLY talk/obsess about the glasses because I can’t view/hear the music…

    ETA: Yes, subliminal Cookson FTW!

  • BootStar

Wait, David really *does* wear glasses? I don’t think I knew that (or I forgot). Either way, I am a BAD fan.

Nor do the glasses look anything like any of the thousands of pairs Gokey wears. I’ve never seen Danny in black horn-rims (although David’s brother wears them, I think). Horn-rims project nerd cool. Danny is definitely not a nerd.

  • Chicagolaw

Yay! Sounds good so far; very excited to see what direction David and band end up taking :)

DC looks good, but I am not a fan of the glasses—he looks too much like Andrew.

  • Keel

Loved the blog. Love Cook. Now, how about an announcement about the first single/album release date next, Clark Cook?

  • larc

Great so far! If things keep racing along at the same rate they have been, maybe we’ll have a release date by this time next year. ;)

  • sma11ie

Wait, David really *does* wear glasses? I don’t think I knew that (or I forgot). Either way, I am a BAD fan.

BootStar, I found the pics where I’d seen those glasses- he was wearing them when he visited Kelly Urich’s house in June 2009. That was from when Andrew was working for Kelly hosting a radio show out of his basement, and David went there to be interviewed by Andrew. LOL, now you have enough useless info to be a “good” fan.

  • sr4mjc

Love the piano, love it. Is the repetitive guitar riff an intro or in the middle of a song or looped for the video? It’s very long, 30 seconds of the teaser. Looking forward to hearing more!

  • standtotheright

If this were an official video, I’d be expecting to find out that Apple paid for the product placement. “Serious musicians record with Macbooks!”

These really are very well edited. Good job, crew. Good job, musicians. Good job, Irvin and Emery (I’d say good job Skib and Tiemann but I have to agree that it might be yet another song that we actually heard). Good job, Cook.

Is the repetitive guitar riff an intro or in the middle of a song or looped for the video?

It’s an intro riff. It gets some variations later in the song. And RCA has insured that I’m not allowed to show you how I know that. Heh.

I think it’s one of the best ones he’s ever written.

  • HappyDaisy

Who’s to say you’ll never run
Who’s to say that I’m not already gone
    Who’s to ….

For me, it sounds like “Who is to say you’re never wrong.”

  • larc

    Indigobunting:
OK, why is Cookie taking on the Danny Gokey look  When I first looked at the pic I thought it was Danny.

Cookie doesn’t look as nerdy as Danny. ;)

  • Incipit

For me, it sounds like “Who is to say you’re never wrong.”

Oh good, HappyDaisy. The lyric dissection begins! IDK for sure – that’s what makes it interesting. ;)

Saw a post on DCO that there was a note with this video teaser –
    “…says:
“David Cook is prepping the release of his new album”
So how much do you suppose that writer knows? It doesn’t say “finishing recording” or “finishing up”.

  • Eyeswideshut2

Yes, I am excited (to put it mildly). But as someone on Twitter remarked, this foreplay is going on wayyyyyyyy to long. I need the release *ahem* NOW.

  • oza902

Aww, Cook! Looking forward to the album release.

  • leome

I don’t know what I’m more excited about. Maybe that first song we listen that just sounds awesome. But then there’s Paper Heart that is sounding very good in the recorded version. And I can’t forget the lyrics to that Cook/Andy/Neal song that seem really interesting. However, my shallow side can not resist that look with the huge glasses that are such a turn on. The video is also so well edited, I want to keep watching it.
All in all, damn good teaser! And it’s good at teasing.

  • girlygirl

Haha a lot of the Idol guys need glasses — Cook, Kris, Danny (that’s all that I know of for sure – but I think Clay wears glasses too, right? ETA – I thought Adam did, but maybe not?)

Guys in glasses = hot (shallow thought for the day :) )

  • BootStar

Thanks for that info, smallie! I feel so much better knowing they’re not [shudder] “fashion glasses”!

[Quakers are such good researchers. Must have been all those years at Van Pelt! ;-) ]

  • unidentified

Glasses-smasses, did you hear that delicious warm voice dripping in honey? That’s what I’m waiting for. He sounds so goooooood.

I cannot wait! (but guess I have to huh?)

  • movin2thabeet

I hear a possible choir at both :26 and at the very beginning for a second. Drip…drip…drip…

It all sounds incredibly promising – and of course, I too am jumping up and down in anticipation, internally, that is. Now, for a release date. Dave looks tuned in to every nuance of the music and hard at work creating some major splash hits. Yes! This wait has almost overworked our patience muscles. I certainly hope this is a real tangible sign that the rollout has begun. If so, what a perfect wait to start the new year.

  • sma11ie

Haha a lot of the Idol guys need glasses — Cook, Kris, Danny and Adam

KRIS? Girlygirl, will you return the favor and post a pic of Kris in glasses? Heh, sorry, I know this is a David thread, but it’s topical, right? Male idols in glasses =P.

Quakers are such good researchers. Must have been all those years at Van Pelt!

BootStar, no problem! Ha, I loathed Van Pelt and always tried to get in and out as quickly as possible. That place smelled and felt like a dungeon. A friend introduced me to the fine arts library which was such a prettier environment for studying :).

  • sr4mjc

Adam wears glasses? Not just fashion type ones? Bad stan..

  • tierbee

Um, what all y’all said? I’m all excited, and then exhausted. It sounds so good, he looks all purty, gimme the album dammit. :)

    I never said I wasn’t greedy.

  • sunchick

But as someone on Twitter remarked, this foreplay is going on wayyyyyyyy to long. I need the release *ahem* NOW.

Normally I would have agreed, but damn if he didn’t just find the sweet spot. I’m oddly temporarily content. Check back with me at the end of the week though cuz I’m bound to be back at the tapping fingers impatiently stage. Until then…Did I mention new lyrics? And kinda sorta confirmation that Paper Heart will make the album? And Pixar!Cook? And the, err, short sleevedness?

  • canadiancookfan

So great to hear new music, even if it is just snippets. What a great way to start the year and hopefully a positive sign of things to come.
Love what I’m hearing so far and hope to hear more soon…like a new single and album release date!

  • cookmerized

so, um, yeah -that was pretty much exactly what i needed on this monday morning. gorgeous all around. love the song snippets, the lyrics, the glasses. love focused cookie, all nervous and contemplative as he hammers out his self proclaimed make or break second record. so psyched for album 2. SO PSYCHED.

Who’s to say that I’m not already gone
    Who’s to ….

Hmmmm when I was listening to the clip lyrics at :18 to :26 I thought it was….
Who’s to say you’re never wrong
Who’s to say that i’m not already gone
    Who’s to….

Oh I see someone already mentioned it well i’m w/ HappyDaisy

  • tierbee

Did I mention new lyrics? And kinda sorta confirmation that Paper Heart will make the album? And Pixar!Cook? And the, err, short sleevedness?

If there was a “like” button I’d be “liking” this. Hee.

  • Eyeswideshut2

I hear ‘Who’s to say when I’m not gone anytime’. But that makes no sense at all.

  • tinawina

It’s an intro riff. It gets some variations later in the song. And RCA has insured that I’m not allowed to show you how I know that. Heh.

    What? BOO!!!!! LOL

I liked the song snippets, especially the one with the piano. :D

Adam wears glasses? Not just fashion type ones? Bad stan..

Nope Adam does not wear glasses, not sure where anyone would get that idea. But Kris does.

  • windmills

It all sounds very angsty ;)

The production on the 1st song sounds promising, it reminds me of Vertical Horizon back when they were making hits.

The lyrics on that sheet are eh. But the Paper Heart riff is good. I still think Cook needs to be careful about too much of the sads and post-grungy angst on his record even though I don’t disagree that it fits him. Like maybe if he had a breakup song that sounded brighter, it’d have a better chance of attracting attention. The first song in that clip could be like that.

  • wordnerdarchie

Now I just want more. Is it time for tour yet? ;)

    Blast from the Past

  • BootStar

Is this the riff folks are asking about?

  • CindyM

Me no likey the beard nor the glasses. BUT, I like the sound of his voice and I’m glad for the Cook fans to get some hint of new music!!

  • doggiedr

I certainly hope this is a real tangible sign that the rollout has begun. If so, what a perfect wait to start the new year.

    Great typo

  • Q3

Adam doesn’t wear glasses or contacts for correction — he wore glasses in a skit for VH1 Best Week Ever as a joke and has wore colored contacts as part of a costume. He bought some red contacts in Japan for this year’s Halloween vampire costume. So maybe the fake glasses or cosmetic contacts is where this idea came from.

Regarding the Cook album tease — I like the bits and it sounds like it is creatively inline with his last album — although the clips are so short it is hard to tell. And certainly not simplistic pop (not that I thought that would happen.)

I am not expecting it to be more rock-oriented that DCTA but I am still hopeful — I still prefer live David to album David.

  • Incipit

There’s an advantage to the delay, right there on the video – the very first time we even heard about that DNA song was December 3rd.

    >>Tracking a lil Cook/Skib/Tiemann number called “goodbye to the girl”. Insane vibe creation in progress…
and now it’s featured on the studio teaser….making us want to hear more!

Windmills, I don’t think David does “bright” – that suits lyric and counter tenors, not his dramatic tenor voice. I can’t think of a single example – even in the midtempo stuff from DCTR that turned Rock in concert…and TBH – I never missed it, nor can I imagine it in a break up song. He does uptempo and rock and anthemic ballads, with that sandpaper/bourbon voice, and riffing guitars turned up to 11, and killer drums and bass, with an amazing falsetto from time to time – not “bright”.

    JMO, Of Course. ;)

  • _nyanyanie

thank goodness for the teaser!! i love all what i am hearing so far… short but sweet, and i say, it is very david cook, a more polished x10 analog heart feeling…

  • sunchick

I still think Cook needs to be careful about too much of the sads and post-grungy angst…..

Annnnd I am still sooo far at the opposite end of the ocean on this particular argument, but as I said before Cook’s natural angsty alt rock bent is right up my alley, sooo….yeah. If he branches out in the name of progression, cool. But ngl, I will die a little inside if his first single is a four on the floor dance ditty about partying, hooking up, and/or what he’s wearing and how hot he looks in it.

    Naaah. Never happen.

    I think.

  • tierbee

I am not expecting it to be more rock-oriented that DCTA but I am still hopeful — I still prefer live David to album David.

Live David is hard to beat :) Plus you don’t get banter on the album. Haha.

Annnnd I am still sooo far at the opposite end of the ocean on this particular argument, but Cook’s natural bent is right up my alley which is why I enjoy his music, so….

I love angsty Cook myself. I’m really eager to hear a full song – see? I’m not even asking for the album, how about a single? C’mon, Cookie, you big tease.

  • windmills

Incipit: As far as imagining “bright” in a break up song I was thinking about SUBG.

I like Cook’s voice but I really don’t enjoy most post-grunge style rock and I thought his debut album was too heavily produced and monotonous. Add in the context of all the talk here about getting him a CHR hit and that’s where I’m coming from with my comments. It’s like, Kelly and Carrie are best on the poignant and sad stuff too but I really think part of their success is they’ve been able to mix their moods up and give people some variety.

But I’m a long time country music fan and I can only take so much of the guitars turned up to 11. In fact I like it better when it’s quieter picking. So I’m more an interested observer than David’s target market ;)

  • standtotheright

Add in the context of all the talk here about getting him a CHR hit and that’s where I’m coming from with my comments.

I dunno. In a world where Just A Dream goes #1 (with a pretty obvious guitar riff, no less) and Grenade sells 500K copies in a week, I’d say that CHR has room for angsty breakup songs, too.

  • doggiedr

If he branches out, fine, all in the name of progression, but ngl, I will die a little inside if his first single is a four on the floor dance ditty about partying, hooking up, and/or what he’s wearing and how hot he looks in it.

But if it went Top 20 on Pop I could live with it.
He needs to see commercial success in order to remain a viable artist.

  • Incipit

But I’m a long time country music fan and I can only take so much of the guitars turned up to 11 so I’m more an interested observer than David’s target market

Gotcha, Windmills, although I’m afraid I’m blanking on SUBG…but since my perspective is from a long term rock fan – who is only an observer of country music, love those guitars and what they did to the overproduced DCTR in concert. I hope they cut out the middleman and go straight for the rock – but I’ll take what I can get.

The CHR hit thing? Seems a chancy proposition with the state of the charts. Although I can see why some would wish for it, I wouldn’t want it at the expense of the music David prefers to create….and a lot of fans prefer to listen to. Maybe there’s a magician aboard who can craft a compromise, but if not? Fine with me, KWIM?

  • fadetowhite

Annnnd I am still sooo far at the opposite end of the ocean on this particular argument, but as I said Cook’s natural bent is right up my alley, hence the reason I buy his music, so….

Yeah me too – add to that the fact that the instrumentation sounds far, far more interesting than it was in DCTR – where a more varied approach only poked it’s head up here and there under constraints of time – and I am a very, very happy bunny.

Not every artist has to be the same and produce bright, happy, clappy tunes (and hell, I like those too!) – though there is no denying that not being in with the market trend will make a single hard to sell on CHR.

But I just cannot muster up any angst even over that old argument today.

I like what I see of the lyrics.

    i like what I hear.

That’s got to be enough for a fan.

  • sr4mjc

add to that the fact that the instrumentation sounds far, far more interesting than it was in DCTR

    ditto. Far more interesting already..

  • suenigma

I dunno. In a world where Just A Dream goes #1 (with a pretty obvious guitar riff, no less) and Grenade sells 500K copies in a week, I’d say that CHR has room for angsty breakup songs, too.

I love both those songs. Two bright (but dark?) spots in Pop right now. And no audible Auto-Tune, yay!

And just for kicks, re. the accidental Cookson (FTW)…Not only has Cook cribbed her lyric (JK) but he also recently got a red heart-shaped balloon tattoo on his forearm. KELLY ALSO HAS A RED HEART-SHAPED TATTOO ON HER WRIST. It is meant to be you guys. LOL.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

    thats sooooooooo cool

  • Incipit

    ditto. Far more interesting already..

Yep – David said no “wall of sound” this time – and this time, no studio musicians and long distance involvement – they had the luxury of working out the sound they wanted. Really liking the whole vibe.

  • BootStar

But I’m a long time country music fan and I can only take so much of the guitars turned up to 11. In fact I like it better when it’s quieter picking. So I’m more an interested observer than David’s target market

I’m a hybrid, windmills. I love Cook’s voice and the angsty side of him (along with all the electric guitars), but I’d love some acoustic songs on the new album, as well. Heck, I’d be happy with an all-unplugged album and have always felt he loses out on a big part of the market by ignoring that side of the equation.

I dunno. In a world where Just A Dream goes #1 (with a pretty obvious guitar riff, no less) and Grenade sells 500K copies in a week, I’d say that CHR has room for angsty breakup songs, too.

Funny you mention Bruno Mars. I was just thinking I wish Cook could have co-written with him. That guy is a genius at writing a pop hook. That song “The Other Side” he does with Cee Lo Green and B.o.B. is one of my favorite songs from last year. For me, it manages to be angsty AND “bright” at the same time. I don’t know if Cee Lo constitutes a “dramatic tenor” but both he and Bruno sound awesome on that song. I know this isn’t David’s preferred wheelhouse, but I’d love to hear him do something a little different. And didn’t he do a song with some rappers when he was in Axium?

Whatever the single is, it needs to sound current if it’s going to be a CHR hit, something I think he needs to be more than a niche artist.

add to that the fact that the instrumentation sounds far, far more interesting than it was in DCTR

Yep – David said no “wall of sound” this time – and this time, no studio musicians and long distance involvement – they had the luxury of working out the sound they wanted. Really liking the whole vibe.

    fourth the motion.

i love you DCTR (1), you were the first born (post idol), but you’re daddy was so busy that time. i just like it now he is taking the time (although to Muuuch time). anyway, i love love love those snippets

  • windmills

Incipit: Gotcha, Windmills, although I’m afraid I’m blanking on SUBG…but since my perspective is from a long term rock fan – who is only an observer of country music, love those guitars and what they did to the overproduced DCTR in concert. I hope they cut out the middleman and go straight for the rock – but I’ll take what I can get.

SUBG = Since U Been Gone (Kelly’s song)

I definitely think all records would be better if artists and their producers didn’t worry about producing for radio. But there’s always compromises so I was thinking within that narrower frame of Cook doing a pop/rock record.

standtotheright: I dunno. In a world where Just A Dream goes #1 (with a pretty obvious guitar riff, no less) and Grenade sells 500K copies in a week, I’d say that CHR has room for angsty breakup songs, too.

But what I was talking about was variety within the songs Cook’s done and the danger of sounding like a one note act to people who aren’t paying close attention.

But we’ve got common ground. I am VERY anti-Wall Of Sound (which is why I don’t like Carrie’s producer Mark Bright even though he toned it down for Play On) which is why the Song 1 clip sounds promising. It just depends on what they do for the inevitable chorus explosion.

  • GreenHippo

It’s Monday (and the worst kind – the first of a year) and I needed a laugh, and I got one – THANKS for that post:

But ngl, I will die a little inside if his first single is a four on the floor dance ditty about partying, hooking up, and/or what he’s wearing and how hot he looks in it.

that would be so COOK – well UN-COOK ;) – hehehehe uncooked –
Def NOT what I would want from David Cook. I want the angst break-up song with a heavy guitar riff, right up my alley.

  • _nyanyanie

did anyone hear the choir @ 0:27-0:28? which song would that be?

  • sma11ie

I will die a little inside if his first single is a four on the floor dance ditty about partying, hooking up, and/or what he’s wearing and how hot he looks in it.

LOL, I will die with you… of shock! But I understand what windmills was talking about, I think.

Kelly and Carrie are best on the poignant and sad stuff too but I really think part of their success is they’ve been able to mix their moods up and give people some variety.

This might sound a bit crazy, but I’ve always pictured David sounding great on some of Kelly and Carrie’s more rocking numbers—especially Kelly songs. Lyrical gender problems aside, Cook’s voice would be great on something like SUBG, BHC, MLWSWU…

I kinda felt like musically, it seemed Declaration was the only “bright”, four on the floor song from the main tracks of DCTR, where the main emotion on the vocal delivery wasn’t “angst”, and it was still somewhat/sufficiently “emo” lyrically, so it was still very “David”.

Okay, so I guess I’m not sure I know exactly what “bright” means, but lyrically, David’s shown that he can being sarcastic like BHC with Kiss On the Neck rather than 100% angsty 100% of the time. I understand what windmills means about showing variety to casual observers… but to be fair, his three mainstream singles: TOML, LO, CBTM were pretty different, IMO. And DCTR itself had quite a lot of range considering the rushed job that it was (Declaration to Avalanche to A Daily Anthem to Permanent to Bar-ba-sol to Lie… leaving out Kiss On the Neck and Breathe Tonight as bonus tracks, I wouldn’t place the 6 songs I named as similar to each other. I see how Declaration, Light On, Life On The Moon and Heroes may be similar, and how Avalance and Come Back to Me may be similar)

About the lyrics on that page… I’ll withhold judgment til I hear those lyrics sung. A lot of Cook’s lyrics come off better in song than written or vice versa.

  • tierbee

Funny you mention Bruno Mars. I was just thinking I wish Cook could have co-written with him. That guy is a genius at writing a pop hook.

I would love to hear what would come out of a session with Bruno Mars. My sister and I were just talking about him yesterday (and Cee Lo, who I think is brilliant – and, hey, B.O.B. who I just love, still playing the crap out of his album).

  • standtotheright

But what I was talking about was variety within the songs Cook’s done and the danger of sounding like a one note act to people who aren’t paying close attention.

Yes, but the people who aren’t paying close attention remember that he did a power ballad about a light and/or a straight up ballad about a rainbow. Some of them might remember that he did a mid-tempo shuffler which ends with a lot of cooing oohs. That’s it.

I think PDs pay more attention to tempo than angstiness of lyrical content, so PH (for example) would not come off as one note in the light of previous singles. Anybody who is paying close enough attention to have drawn the same conclusions that you did about the album is probably going to recognize those differences in instrumentation that were already discussed.

Funny you mention Bruno Mars. I was just thinking I wish Cook could have co-written with him. That guy is a genius at writing a pop hook

That would have been quite all right with me. Although I admit that Liquor Store Blues hit me faster, TOS is impressive. (But I just went and looked it up and TOS features Patrick Stump as a co-writer. Hee.)

  • Incipit

did anyone hear the choir @ 0:27-0:28? which song would that be?

Yep, people with good audio have reported hearing it – and that makes me wonder more if that snippet is SGTTG, because the children’s choir was tracking on September 8, and the DNA song was December 3rd. But – David did talk about having fun writing with Neal and Andy on August 20th, and wondered if it would come to fruition. Maybe they had the time, so it did? IDK.

    Mysteries.

  • Brisblondie

eeee!!! Finally a little hint of sumthin!! It sounds pretty good to me so far. *flail* *wants*

Angsty Cook is alright by me. Now get me some Barbasol and a razor… too much beard for me. Hopefully he’ll lighten that back to “scruff” when it’s time to go on teevee so I can see his face again while I’m listenin to that voice. :)

Also…yay for the band sounding awesome too.

  • _nyanyanie

Yep, people with good audio have reported hearing it – and that makes me wonder more if that snippet is SGTTG, because the children’s choir was tracking on September 8, and the DNA song was December 3rd.

    Mysteries.

my guess is they just randomly showed the goodbye to the girl lyrics, cause the timeline of the choir tweet was first and somehow…. thinking of that DNA song on my mind, it will not sound like the first snippet

ETA: mouth breathers keeps poppin up in my mind for the first snippet, but i am sure i am 98% wrong.

  • tinawina

Yeah me too – add to that the fact that the instrumentation sounds far, far more interesting than it was in DCTR – where a more varied approach only poked it’s head up here and there under constraints of time – and I am a very, very happy bunny.

    Ditto.

I don’t dislike very many Idols but I am only really interested in wacthing a few… the ones who, to me, seem to have some potential to do something interesting to me. Usually, I gravitate towards people who seem like they have an artistic point of view, like they have something to say. Even if they don’t write necessarily, but they have a sensibility… I like seeing what becomes of that potential.

I think Cookie has a great pop/rock album in him. Something catchy with touches of real musical creativity, lots of that relationship angst (and sometimes anger) which he seems to gravitate towards, with some quirky turns of phrase thrown in, a sense of humor too. That’s what I want. So far signs are promising, so I am pretty happy.

Coincidentally, Fanny managed to deliver on her promise this year for me. She found a way to make that updated classic soul album that was always in her I felt. And its great! If Cookie did it too I would be thrilled.

  • BootStar

That would have been quite all right with me. Although I admit that Liquor Store Blues hit me faster, TOS is impressive. (But I just went and looked it up and TOS features Patrick Stump as a co-writer. Hee.)

No joke? I LOVE Patrick Stump!

I love “Liquor Store Blues” too, but there’s no Cee-Lo on that one! I also love “Talking to the Moon” and, NGL, I kinda LOVE “Grenade.” Embarrassingly so.

And the first thing I thought of when I heard “Talking to the Moon”? Cook’s “Life on the Moon,” of course.

  • fadetowhite

I love Bruno Mars and Cee Lo Green too…

  • Truthiness

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So excited to finally hear some actual new music from Cookie.

And I like what small bits there were. Oh and I like the glasses and the beard. It’s not my favourite look of his, but I think he still looks hottt.

David said no “wall of sound” this time – and this time, no studio musicians and long distance involvement – they had the luxury of working out the sound they wanted. Really liking the whole vibe.

Thank the goddess for no more more “wall of sound.” I really didn’t like that on his album. But of course it was the typical overrpoduction that has happened with AIers first albums. The good thing about this album taking for freakin’ ever! is that at least he had time this time, to craft what he wanted.

  • Incipit

And didn’t he do a song with some rappers when he was in Axium?

Yeah, Bootstar, he did. It was pretty cool too – but they fit the rapping into the instrumentation of the original version, and it was a very hard driving, in-your-face rock song.
That would be the version of “Feed Your Ego” – Remix – live from the Cain’s Ballroom Recordings, Guest Vocals By Lyrycyst & Godz Disciple, in 2003.

I pretty much ignore pop music, so IDK if this sort of thing would play, or if it’s even what you mean – assuming the Suits didn’t have a total fit, cut out the “F” word, and soften the sound – and what with “progression” and all I have my doubts David would be interested.

I would have to look up Bruno Mars and hear what he sings – I only heard him once, and I forget the song – he made no impression. Isn’t he a lyric tenor? I have no opinion on that without research.

  • _nyanyanie

also, speaking of clark kent, im gettin the superman vibe anthem on these teasers… first time i’ve got the vibe was from NYC blog – right here with you. when i listen to that, i think it will be good for a movie theme,

tinawina, you know I heart you anyways, but especially for what you just wrote, because you perfectly described how I feel about David. And articulated perfectly so I won’t have to struggle to describe it myself!

  • sunchick

I like what I see of the lyrics.

    i like what I hear.

That’s got to be enough for a fan.

Ditto. If it came down to really liking David’s new music vs. an album of disposable top 40 hits that I could take or leave, I want to like the music. If they found the magic bullet wherein Cook can be the best Cook possible, resemble the Cook I know and love AND get top 40 play, hurray, all the better. But I’m not holding my breath. There are the rare great tunes that hit big on top 40 these days but they’re mixed in with a lot of what I call candy coated crap, ie songs that go down so easily you almost forget they are actually pretty shitty excuses for music.

t seemed Declaration was the only “bright”, four on the floor song from the main tracks of DCTR, where the main emotion on the vocal delivery wasn’t “angst”, and it was still somewhat/sufficiently “emo” lyrically, so it was still very “David”.

LOL, in the past windmills and I had a long discussion about Declaration vs. SUBG. I have always thought of Declaration as Cook’s SUBG. So, what you said there was interesting.

And in other news, it just dawned on me that the only straight up country artist I really love is Johnny Cash, who was…wait for it…so angsty he only wore black. Apparently, I have a type. I blame the 90s. ;) But I also dig quirky POVs and would enjoy Cook’s sense of humor finding it’s way into his music.

    Or, basically, what tinawina said.

ETA: Agree with the positive thoughts re: Cee Lo (dating back to Gnarls Barkley though I am more a Danger Mouse fan-now that would be a dream collaborator right there) and Bruno Mars.

  • http://MJO judes

So happy for all you long suffering Cook fans , that you now have something tangable from David to keep you going for now! Sounds good to me so far.

I really don’t listen to commercial radio, at all, incipit, but I have teen boys, one of whom LOVES all that top 40 pop crap and the other who is a rock snob. He loves Cee Lo, though. We both do. So Bruno Mars’s album is one of the few I’ve purchased that has “something for everybody” on it.

If you follow that link I posted for “The Other Side,” Bruno sings first, then Cee Lo, then B.o.B. Not sure if Bruno is technically a “lyric” tenor or not, but he has a high tenor voice. And I find that he sounds eerily like a young Michael Jackson. Kid sings great LIVE and plays a ton of instruments. He’s the kinda “pop star” I can get behind.

I’m not sure that old Axium song would work today, but I liked the idea of experimentation. I’ve got my fingers crossed that DC does more than a little of that on the new album.

  • sma11ie

LOL, in the past windmills and I had a long discussion about Declaration vs. SUBG. I have always thought of Declaration as Cook’s SUBG. So, what you said there was interesting.

LOL, how did I miss this discussion? I love Kelly and SUBG and I love Declaration. Hilariously and somewhat in-line with y’alls discussion, I always felt strongly that Declaration should’ve been Cook’s post-coronation first single– and that it would’ve been his version of Kelly’s Miss Independent. Upbeat pop-rocky “declaration” of him as an artist (Mr. Independent, lol) no longer singing about rainbows or moments, but still positive, so a good transition.

I FLOVE SUBG, and don’t think Declaration is of that caliber of a mega pop hit, but David was riding high off Idol buzz when LO dropped, and a solid, upbeat pop-rock number would’ve had a much smoother ride up CHR, and ended up higher than LO IMO, and paved the way for him on CHR for the second single, be it a power ballad, emo ballad (Lie! or Avalanche!), or a more rock song (Bar-ba-sol!).

    Dear Jim:

I understand that you are married, so I will not propose to you. But do you think you could hook a girl up with some Settlers of Catan tutorials at least? Cause I seriously want to hang with you right now.

Where is the song, the choir, the piano, and the band!

Since this is mostly about mixing the tracks, IMO, it’s “heard and not seen.” The first song has some piano, which I clearly hear, and supposedly some choir sounds, which I don’t. I suspect the close shots on Skib playing the guitar riff for PH are supposed to cover for the fact that it was already recorded weeks ago and he was just doing it for visual interest, much like Cook was “in the booth, doing vocals” on that first B&W studio vid even though they hadn’t started recording vocals yet.

pattycake – maybe try a decent pair of headphones? All of the above (the piano, the voice, the choir) were loud and clear even on my crappy lappy speakers. A little too truncated for sure, but very much there.

Cook is a very talented musician. I’m not particularly a fan of his genre though so unless RCA puts some more pop stuff on the album, it’s not for me. Is that what folks want when they talk about collabs with Bruno Mars? Because Bruno Mars and Cee Lo have zero to do with the kind of music Cook makes.

This music does sound like it’ll do great on HAC though. Similiar to Daughtry but maybe not as Pop. I laughed at the tweet about all the comments about glasses though. ;)

  • smeggingnuts

I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album

  • tierbee

Is that what folks want when they talk about collabs with Bruno Mars? Because Bruno Mars and Cee Lo have zero to do with the kind of music Cook makes.

Yes, it comes up often what he’d have to do to get a Top 40 hit. And then that talk led to some talk about who folks would love for him to collaborate with to get said “poppier” songs… And turns out lots of Cook fans like Bruno Mars/Cee Lo Green. Hooray!

  • sma11ie

I’m not particularly a fan of his genre though so unless RCA puts some more pop stuff on the album, it’s not for me. Is that what folks want when they talk about collabs with Bruno Mars? Because Bruno Mars and Cee Lo have zero to do with the kind of music Cook makes.

It’s not about being more pop, necessarily, at least not for me, but like BootStar says, it’s about experimentation, and cough, “progression”, tm Cook. I would’ve thought back in Parachutes days that Coldplay had zero to do with the kind of music Jay-Z makes, but now that we have it, I think it’s brilliant.

  • standtotheright

Is that what folks want when they talk about collabs with Bruno Mars? Because Bruno Mars and Cee Lo have zero to do with the kind of music Cook makes.

As I said before, Patrick Stump collaborated with them. One of Bruno Mars’ songs sounds like it was a mellow Sublime outtake, IMO. Of course, Cee Lo Green was definitely making some rock music when in Gnarls Barkley (they did a cover of a Violent Femmes song). I think they could write some solid, hooky songs that were still recognizably Cookian if given world enough and time.

  • Incipit

Kid sings great LIVE and plays a ton of instruments. He’s the kinda “pop star” I can get behind.

OK, Bootstar, I found the link and went and listened. Now I remember him – the guy with the piano, and why I checked him out in the first place, Alex Lambert was butchering a song, and the comments said it belonged to Bruno Mars – so I went to see what it was ‘supposed’ to sound like! Still don’t recall the song, though.

Yes, he has a supple voice, and sings on key, and plays instruments, obviously – and I hope he has a lot of success to reward his talent and hard work,

Problem is – I find the high tenor male voice a complete turn-off…and I can’t imagine it blending with David’s unless it were ‘call and response’, like he had to do with Archie for “Heroes”- with David handling the harmonies…the singers even traded stanzas in that song you linked – no one was singing together…and their tones were more closely matched.

So, now I have an opinion – the song was poppy, as I’m thinking it was meant to be – and it didn’t have anything to ‘say’ that I found resonant, the lyric was repetitive, the vocals were pitched too high for my tastes, I couldn’t hear anything in there that left room for David – and I wouldn’t care for a collaboration at all.

BTW – Some of those things are what I don’t like about CBTM…so at least I’m consistent ;)

    JMO. Of Course.

ETA – About the experimentation? We’ll just have to wait and see what WTF!Cook wants to try next.

    what does it mean?

  • suenigma

Jpfan. It’s an easy line for me to draw – Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, and David Cook are all excellent vocalists. It may not be his preferred genre, but Cook would effing slay Crazy, F@@ck You, Genade, etc. And I would pay A LOT of money to hear it. LOL.

I will never forget how great he sounded on “Please Don’t Stop the Music”, and he sang it straight up pop. Loathe that particular song, but he could def. add a little gravitas to a good pop/r&b/soul ditty, IMO.

  • suenigma

I would seriously cut off a limb for a Cook/Ce Lo Green cover of a Violent Femmes (epic live band) song. Three of my all-time favorites.

  • movin2thabeet

pattycake- You can hear the piano in the first song. It’s all or mostly chords, so if you were listening for a melodic line, you’d miss it. Now the choral voices are only there for a couple of seconds, so you have to listen closely to catch them.

I want to echo what others have said about the more interesting instrumentation. To me, its really noticeable on this little teaser of a video, providing more evidence that this could be a truly kickass auditory experience. I have no doubt that Dave has that in him to do – on many, many recordings.

I see that the pop crossover meme has returned. I guess its inevitable, especially on a general Idol site like this. All I want is for Dave to pour his heart and soul into his music, to the best of his ability. I’m sure I will love the results and I also am certain that eventually, so will millions more. Changing his style to match the current fickle trends is a losing proposition in my book, especially if it steers him away from his unique powerful expression. Any benefit would be short-term in nature. A rocker chasing after a pop dream, especially in these times, is a tremendous waste of energy IMHO. Better to blow them away with a truly accessible version of the best of your vision and talents, and have them come to you. It will happen.

  • jpfan

I understand a collab w/Bruno would give Cook a major leg up in getting a Top 40 hit but in the end, it’s not the kind of music Cook wants to make (clearly). I think HAC not Pop is where his music should do well.

I picked up something on that clip. It wasn’t NFT on guitar- confirmed!
“@pinkplainangel: @nealfingtiemann- Nice work on the album teaser! Can’t wait for the real thing! Loving it already! :)” – wasn’t me!

  • suenigma

I wasn’t really talking about generating a Top 40 hit, but rather, just creating a great song. I do think that Cook’s musical tastes, influences and abilites are more eclectic than you give him credit for though. He’s a Hip Hop and Rap fan from wayyyyyy back. LOL.

  • sr4mjc

And I find that he sounds eerily like a young Michael Jackson.

pattycake, Cook landed in LA yesterday, hence his tweet about flying and RECORDING. Maybe he was just stuck in traffic today.

And I agree totally that collaborations don’t necessarily mean moving away from authentic expressions of self, just an opportunity to synthesize new ideas into those expressions. Adding Old Bay to fries does not turn them into crabs.

ETA: jpfan, the only reason we started talking about Bruno Mars is because I made the point that he has a big ol’ angsty hit single. I like PH; have for months. I like the fact that the other has piano, but given the little bit that we heard that’s pretty much all I can say about it.

  • jpfan

Mmm…it’s a little disturbing that so many of Cook’s fans are into imaginary collabs instead of commenting on the samples of music they got today. Not a great sign.

  • BootStar

It’s an easy line for me to draw – Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, and David Cook are all excellent vocalists. It may not be his preferred genre, but Cook would effing slay Crazy, F@@ck You, Genade, etc. And I would pay A LOT of money to hear it. LOL.

Exactly. And I wasn’t suggesting David *sing* with Bruno Mars, just that they write together. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I am, first and foremost, a fan of good music. I’m not so tied to any one genre that I get offended by another. While I consider David primarily a rock singer, I don’t think there’s anything inherently evil about a GOOD pop song. Bruno Mars writes good pop songs. Cee Lo Green sings GREAT music and is a GREAT singer. I loved his Gnarls Barkely collaboration with Danger Mouse. And I loved what Danger Mouse did with the lead singer of The Shins on Broken Bells. All of which got serious critical respect, especially in AAA circles. And, personally, I’d love to see what David came up with working with artists of this caliber. I’m sure there would be some duds, but there could be some genius stuff that emerges too.

Also, forgive me if I’m “misremembering,” but I distinctly recall Cook say he likes a lot of pop music and isn’t opposed to singing pop songs. Hell, he was raving about some Ryan Tedder song a while back, wasn’t he? Doesn’t get much more formulaic pop than that.

Mmm…it’s a little disturbing that so many of Cook’s fans are into imaginary collabs instead of commenting on the samples of music they got today. Not a great sign.

Oh, I don’t think it’s a sign of anything more than the reality that those snippets were really SHORT! I already said I liked what I heard.

  • toonces1966

LOL, at first I thought that was Danny Gokey! I didn’t know Cookie wore glasses. I’m not used to that look on Cook but he looks good no matter what.

From what I heard from this teaser, I think I’m going to love album # 2. Can’t wait.

  • Eyeswideshut2

Mmm…it’s a little disturbing that so many of Cook’s fans are into imaginary collbs instead of enjoying the samples of music they got today. Not a great sign.

I don’t really think that many Cook fans are into fantasy collabs. People were just playing with the idea of how to infuse his music with a more CHR-vibe (on the assumption that’s a desirable thing. Which I don’t.)

Sunchick, I think you’re making it sorta redundant for me to post here. You have a way of saying exactly what I think (if I was funny and smart and kinda awesome) :-)

  • jpfan

People were just playing with the idea of how to infuse his music with a more CHR-vibe (on the assumption that’s a desirable thing. Which I don’t.)

I understand the some Cook fans want him to have a big Pop hit. But that’s getting as much discussion as the clips posted. Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing. Or probably they like the clips AND they want a big Bruno Mars POP hit. ;)

  • sr4mjc

I love Pop and would love a Cookie version of Since You’ve Been gone. that would be fun. But I really like the piano on the first track.

  • BootStar

Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing.

I don’t know where you’re getting that from. I haven’t read one genuinely negative thing about the teaser. (That may be a first, come to think of it!)

And Jim Cantiello is full of sh*t if he says all anybody is commenting on is David’s glasses. This from the guy who rarely concealed his mancrush on Kris Allen.

  • standtotheright

I personally don’t care if the guy has a big pop hit (although a moderate one to keep sales up will be helpful). I’m simply saying that there are acts out there who do have them who are not all sunshine and light, and those people interest me.

I haven’t seen a single comment here from anyone who didn’t like the snippets, and I’m pretty sure Hodges still has the singe marks from the invective sent his way over the “Hard to Believe” song, so it’s not like folks would be reticent if they didn’t like them.

And Jim Cantiello is full of sh*t if he says all anybody is commenting on is David’s glasses

There were a lot of glasses comments on the first page of the post. And the second. I thought it was hilarious.

You never know what’s really shown is an edited video like that however, while producing a record many studio muscicians are involved

jrain, earlier studio vids clearly showed band members performing these songs for recording purposes. They’ve made it clear that they are recording for the album. There have been some studio musicians involved for extra instruments like strings, but in a band with three talented guitarists there really isn’t a need to bring in another one. And Tiemann and Skib have written on at least some of the songs that were/are being recorded, so they are creators of the music. If it isn’t Andy Skib playing, then, as I said, it’s because the riffs were already tracked and they are trying to create some visual interest, not because the band members aren’t working on the album.

  • jrain

I have been reading the comments all day but could not watch the clip until now. color me confused. I didn’t hear any song or piano, no children’s choir, or see any band. I heard a guitar and saw hands playing and they were not Neils as no tats and not Davids as it was not a lefty. Where is the song, the choir, the piano, and the band! I am disappointed dawg.

You never know what’s really shown is an edited video like that however, while producing a record many studio muscicians are involved. With all due respect Neil is a band memebr and the one performing the stuff live, he is not the creator/originator of the music.

  • ladymadonna

I understand the some Cook fans want him to have a big Pop hit. But that’s getting as much discussion as the clips posted.

Welcome to mj’s, jpfan – I think you may like it here. :)

But really – the clips are getting plenty of discussion here and elsewhere. And considering that Paper Heart (which makes up more than half of the video’s length) has been dissected ad nauseum since it first premiered in August, I think the comments have been appropriately musically-inclined today.

  • movin2thabeet

Mmm…it’s a little disturbing that so many of Cook’s fans are into imaginary collabs instead of commenting on the samples of music they got today. Not a great sign.

jpfan, I don’t think many Cook fans dream of fantasy collabs either. It is, however, a subject the continues to rear its head, mainly because of the twin realities of the scarcity of rock on Top 40 along with the same scarcity of Idols on rock radio. Its more of a genre foundational issue that it is specific to David Cook.

And, so that I don’t feed that issue at the exclusion of the peek into David’s wonderful world of music, I’m loving what I’m hearing so far. Absolutely no desires here for collaborations – just more David Cook.

  • CindyM

o/ I commented on the glasses. I didn’t like them or the beard :) I Thought the snippets were pretty alright, can’t tell too much yet, but it interests me and I’ll definitely listen to the album stream when it’s available.

JPFan, I am confoozled. I haven’t seen any real negative here at all and I’ve read the entire thread. Seems like a lot of happy DC fans to me. Maybe I missed something.

  • Balance

I understand the some Cook fans want him to have a big Pop hit. But that’s getting as much discussion as the clips posted. Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing.

LOL…did a bunch of these unhappy fans posts get deleted?

  • Joyed

instead of commenting on the samples of music they got today.

I think that is because the longest sample was the instrumental from “Paper Heart” and most were already able to comment about in great detail months ago when Cook first performed it live (and in its entirety!). Kind of old ground for many fans.

Also, the most anyone can really say about the very short preview of the first song is “yay, piano!” and “yay, sounds like a chorus!” – and “oh, look lyrics on a page (without hearing how they sound)!” There isn’t actually that much to go on, although I have seen people talk about the production / instrumentation a lot – which is talking about the music:)

Also, I like the glasses, lol:)

  • Trina

The comments posted here don’t cover the majority of what’s being said by Cook fans. First of all the clips were short, and one of the songs we heard in full played live and fans RAVED about it. All day today my twitter feed has been filled with comments about how excited everyone is about the music being made, not fantasy collaborations.

Look I wouldn’t mind him having a pop hit, but I have such a huge appreciation for how well he’s done on HAC, and as we saw with Archie it can be a struggle to get ANY airplay today. Frankly I’d be more than pleased if HAC welcomes him back with new music.

  • suenigma

    jpfan:

What? As I said, I am not looking for Cook to get a big Pop hit, just to make some great music. We are just exploring the possibilites here. The very, very little we heard in that teaser (tiny snippets of 2 songs) bodes well for that objective. IMO.

The instrumentation sounds so much more complex and dynamic than on his 1st album, and his vocals sound fantastic. If I have one hope for this album (beyond it selling a shitload of copies) it’s that it have at LEAST one accoustic track, with his vocals & the melody front & centre.

  • listen

I like what I heard; looking forward to hearing much more.
Can’t wait for the first single and of course the album.

Don’t like the glasses; don’t like the beard (but I usually don’t like glasses or beards on anyone…)

  • progression

Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing

Seriously? We’ve heard almost nothing. About 20 seconds of two songs each, one of which we’ve heard in it’s entirety before. It’s not like 20 seconds of a new song gives us much music to discuss, lol. The purpose of the vid was clearly to assure fans Dave is hard at work in the studio, without telling us much more than that. So, mission accomplished. Now, about those glasses……

  • weareallinnocent

Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing.

LOL…did a bunch of these unhappy fans posts get deleted?

    LOL Yeah, that.

Ok, my simple-minded Cook fan thoughts are as follows:

    YAY!

    FINALLY!!

May sound more like Analog Heart feat. Axium than I ever imagined it might. So…

    YAY!

    FINALLY!!

That there’s MY fantasy collab. for Cook. ;-) So let it be done (ALREADY!)

  • wordnerdarchie

I will make this post very clear since I don’t want to be misunderstood. ;)

I love the version of Paper Heart that we heard in the teaser. I’m “over the moon” with delight upon hearing the opening song. The lyrics on the page – me likey – they float my boat.

I won’t mention any kind of ocular enhancement.

I’ve never been much into differentiating between different genres. I know what I like when I hear it, where ever it is played.

Who writes the songs is not something I pay much attention to … I’m easy that way.

Does that cover everything? LOL! Yes, I am very happy! I’ve seemed to have found my rainbow, hee hee.

*Goes back to watch one more time … or two*

  • movin2thabeet

I also think you’re seeing some signs of teaser fatigue. We haven’t had a teaser in awhile, but I think folks are more than ready for some solid news of singles, videos, albums, tour dates. We’ve been living on meager snippets for almost a year now. Many fans are hoping that we’ll hear the new single this month, and there was absolutely no indication of that in this message, not even the name of the next single. If this video had been accompanied by info on drop dates, you would have see major fireworks. As it is, we’re seeing a decent little light show. We’re getting an excellent little appetizer with no indication of the entree, whatever it might be, on the way. I’m hoping that this is a sign that the entree will be announced shortly.

We want the music! We want to hear David Cook’s music!

  • _nyanyanie

haha.. will also make this very clear, i LOVE LOVE LOVE what i heard today… short but sweet, i think i’ve seen it 50 times now… then had it on repeat, listening while doing something else. a very happy david cook new year

  • Curlin

Looks/sounds good to me! :) Now when will he just announce the release date already??!!!

  • competitivebynature

Just tweeted from Andy Skib (DC bandmate): As @nealfingtiemann mentioned, we r heading 2 Austin in a week 2 work on a new ToHaveHeroes EP! I’ll keep u posted on our progress.

I’m happy for Andy and Neal but…This does not sound like they’re gearing up for a DC single radio tour and gigs. Uugggh. What, if anything, does this mean for the DC project?

maybe they were done recording for dc (oh please!) and whatever cook is doing are additional touch up. andy said before on past teaser that his and kyle’s beard will be out once they are done for the recording part?

  • Zastine4974

    And the angst begins again.

My take is that Cook is finishing up with the production part of the record. Andy and Neal still need to make a living while waiting for the DCTR2 release so what a great opportunity for them to make some money. Cook was the one that usually did the preliminary radio promo for DCTR1 so I don’t blame Andy and Neal one bit. Makes me think that March is a realistic release date.

  • movin2thabeet

I’m kind of assuming that Andy and Neal’s recording parts are complete…and that they’re now gearing up for promoting and touring. If a single is due out within the month (which understandably is wishful thinking), likely at least Neal would be joining DC in radio gigs. Maybe they don’t need much more rehearsal time for those type of performances.

ETA: Or maybe Dave would do promos without any of the guys. It did seem like they were gearing up for more band inclusion this go round, but maybe not at this stage. Or it really could be a sign that the single and album are not ready for launching any time soon, in which case, color me disappointed.

  • kmd

I thought that the teaser for Cook’s album sounded good. I like Cook and wish him good luck. It is difficult to get any type of airplay these days.

  • karenc

Love the teaser, love both songs. And I love David Cook’s music. I’m hoping it does really well, regardless of where it charts. And I think an album can be successful even if it isn’t considered a pop album, and a song could be a pop song even if it doesn’t necessarily fit what is considered pop at the moment. Kind of like how Use Somebody did well on pop last year. I could see David having a hit like that.

  • wordnerdarchie

It was said a couple of months ago that Neal mentioned to some fans that they’d have free time but needed to keep their schedules open starting sometime in February. It’s a small crumb, but seems to match up with the fans’ projection of a possible time table for single/album release & promotion.

  • karenc

Andy, Neal, Monty and Kyle did a THH show in Tulsa a couple of weeks ago. I think they are just doing some side projects. It does seem that David is working on the production now, because he did say he was working on the tracking of the album.

  • sunchick

Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing.

See I read it as a linear discussion that progressed like this…

Love the snippets…actual lyrics to the mythical DNA cowrite-must dissect and discuss later….Ooooo, Paper Heart sounds better recorded than I imagined…Evolving instrumentation sounds great! ~ random first impressions, generally positive

Hey, check out the glasses….I like them/don’t like them/thought Gokey was the only AI alum who wore glasses/totally want to be the Lois Lane to his Clark Kent, ngl… ~ various people on a shallow yet amusing tangent

Sounds angsty, which suits him but might not be conducive to pop hit ~ first impression of interested observer who doesn’t usually dig angsty rock

Ah, but I generally I like the type of music that suits him, and the pop crossover factor doesn’t concern me much because sadly, these days a lot of Top 40 radio kinda sucks…Yeah, I think writing with pop collaborators can be a good thing that helps to further hone the hook writing skillz~ to worry about pop radio or not to worry about pop radio, that is the question

There’s some angsty music that actually did well recently pop, though, like Cee Lo and Bruno Mars ~ some other fans offer an interesting observation about pop radio that expands the discussion

You know, you’re right, Bruno Mars is a decent example of Top 40 act that does angst, and also doesn’t suck…Hey, what about a Bruno Mars/Cook collab in the future, that could be cool? ~ annnd the discussion goes off on another tangent

And I loved what Danger Mouse did with the lead singer of The Shins on Broken Bells. All of which got serious critical respect, especially in AAA circles.

Yay, thank you for running with the Danger Mouse reference. Love Broken Bells, especially The Ghost Inside. “Just like a whiskey bottle drained on the floor….she got no future, just a love to endure…” The Grey Album is genius too. Personally, for you for me, Danger Mouse> Bruno Mars, as far as imaginary unconventional Cook collabs go. Also, since someone threw out the Femmes cover idea, I’ve always secretly harbored a desire to hear Cookie do a cheeky cover of Freak Magnet.

I’m pretty sure Hodges still has the singe marks from the invective sent his way over the “Hard to Believe” song

Oh yeah, I think the collective Do Not Want could be heard in space.

ETA: I do not know what to make of the THH news, except that maybe DCTR2: Electric Boogaloo production is finally (!) winding down, and the boys want to give their side projects some attention before they head off on another neverending tour.

  • jpfan

Thanks for the progression. I see that folks do like the clips and the Bruno Mars stuff came in later as an example of a guy who does Pop angst. I think Grenade is really the only angsty song Bruno has done though. ;) Most of his stuff is pretty upbeat.

  • windmills

But…..I was the one who brought up the CHR hit meme in this post. I’m not part of the Cook fanbase because I don’t like most post-grunge rock. Though I like him and am interested to hear what he does and how it plays out against the Idol/major label backdrop.

I think it became a topic because we all know what major labels look for especially from Idols and there’s inevitably issues of compromises and figuring out how to preserve artistic integrity and stuff like that. That’s something all Idol fans worry about so of course it gets discussed. It doesn’t mean people aren’t very happy with what they’ve heard.

I feel bad. Cook fans shouldn’t get tagged for something I brought up.

  • Keel

Well, the Foo Fighters just tweeted that they finished their album. So . . . that’s another album to squeeze into RCA’s album promotion schedule. Damn, Cook. Announce already, dude!

[side note: I cannot freaking wait until FF tours again!! Soooo good. But as with Mr. Cook, I’ve got no choice but to (wait, I mean). Grrr.]

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Sounds like folks aren’t happy with what they’re hearing.

Could we NOT put words in poster’s mouths?

PS: Nobody here needs to explain themselves.

  • Balance

FF just tweeted on 12/18 that Dave G was recording the last of the vocals, so they wrapped the album up pretty quickly after that. Gives me hope that the completion of DCTR2 might not be that far away.

  • sunchick

Windmills, don’t you dare feel bad. Seriously. The CHR hit meme has been floating around since the name of the dred hitmaker Tedder was invoked, before even, and there’s nothing the Cook fandom likes more than to drive a discussion topic into the ground. :D Well, except maybe concerts.

Will never happen, but how cool would it be if Dave and the boys toured with the Foos for a bit? Oh RCA, you big silly label you, why won’t you make me happy already and arrange an accidental on purpose meeting o’ the Daves? I swear I’d never diss you again…much.

  • MollyAnnMay

I have a two year-old niece. When someone does something that pleases her, she clasps her hands in front of her, grins and says, “This is nice!”

I just did a rather embarrassing imitation of my niece.

Hello, new snippit chord progression! Hello, awesome Paper Heart riff, drum line and bass line! Hello, voice that hooked me from the first second I heard it!

Based on the 1 minute and 2 seconds of glee I just experienced, I think 2011 will be… nice.

And based on the instrumentation-done-on-a-shoestring in Analog Heart, I’ve been itching to hear what Cook could do with instrumentation-done-on-a- um, bunch of shoestrings. With some musicians I like the melodies, with some I like the rhythm — Cook’s music I tend to like top to bottom. I always find something interesting *inside* the songs, if that makes sense, which is why I don’t get tired of them, I think (well, that plus the often clever, clever lyrics). These teaser things have been fun for sorting through the innards of what is hopefully going to be a great collection of songs.

Well, the Foo Fighters just tweeted that they finished their album.

WoooooooHoooooooo! See? 2011! A *very* nice year!

ETA: I tend to listen to new music with my eyes closed (which is why I have to listen to new music a time or two before I listen to it while driving, heh), so I just now watched the video all the way through. Thought 1: whoever did the editing is a damn good music-to-visuals editor — they cut on some great beats. Thought 2: I always have to laugh when DC says he doesn’t dance — he’s dancing all the way through this thing. Bwah!

  • tierbee

I feel bad. Cook fans shouldn’t get tagged for something I brought up.

Pfft, don’t feel bad. It was an interesting conversation. And there’s lots of talk, always, about needing a pop hit… so it’s valid. Plus, even if you were in Cooktardistan, you shouldn’t have to apologize for your opinion. Unless I forgot to sign it, there’s no blood oath that all Cook fans must at all times think Cook sh**s puppies and rainbows… Maybe I’m just a bad fan ;)

  • tierbee

Mmm…it’s a little disturbing that so many of Cook’s fans are into imaginary collabs instead of commenting on the samples of music they got today. Not a great sign.

OK, yeah, I read through the whooooole thread and everyone’s pretty darn happy. Which is, in itself, miraculous.

You must’ve missed my earlier comment in the headlines thread when the teaser first appeared – I believe it said something like, “Eeee! I hear Paper Heart!”

And I was so excited that’s all I said, with no reference to what the hell I was talking about. But as said above, we dissected the crap out of Paper Heart after Busch Gardens (was there, loved it even more on day #2). And the other snippet is teeny tiny – though sounds quite promising.

I’m excited. I do have some teaser fatigue. We started teaser-ing last year… and then… kaput. But I am hopeful that THIS time… it’s really starting. Because if it takes another year I’m gonna have something akin to an explosion of my head.

I’d love it if they toured together. Foo Fighters and David are my two favorites.

When I first got my Ipod, which was right after David’s album came out, I used to call it my Davepod, because at first, all it had was David Cook and the Foo Fighers.

That’s what I think too, he did amazing things with Analog Heart. And he was very involved in the recording and production of that. I kind of look to that to see what his true style is, and see a definate progression with DCTR, and expect even more progression on this album. And I know what you mean about his lyrics. I never get sick of listening to his songs.

Had to chime in briefly, I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything I heard. If this is indicative, this is going to be some awesome album. Can.not.wait.

  • loveroftalent

Happy for the Cook fans. You’ve had a long wait. The album teaser sounds great.

  • mon_mon

I think the first song is not GBTTG. It is some other song and I am addicted to that small snippet of it. Paper Heart is catchy. I am so excited for the new album

Oh Good observation! He so is, isn’t he? lol.

ITA on the editing. It was well scripted too. The whole thing was very well put together to address a lot of fan concerns without actually saying anything directly – Dave penned songs, DNA penned song(s), wider range of instrumentation than DCTR, showcasing of vocals – all things fans have been musing over for months.

I can’t beleive nobody has mentioned the oh so artistic/romantic burning candles in the background. Pretty sure those aren’t standard studio lighting. Heh.

I hope that Cook comes out of the gate selling hundreds of thousands of albums, and idol will get some of its mojo back. And I think Cook is the guy to do it.

I’m so hopeful for this album! I love the beginning snippet, sounds soooo good! Hopefully this is the beginning of more info. to come! And I agree the way this video was edited is excellent. Oh, and the glasses look good!

smallie, I don’t know if you got to see the pic. girlygirl posted of Kris, but I’ll thank you for asking because the top pic. is one of my favorite all time pics of him and I immediately thought of it w/ the glasses talk.

    Okay back to the music…

  • _nyanyanie

ok, i just have to say this… i’ve been listening to it all day now… you can say im reading too much in between the lines of this vlog but it pumps me up…

the first line goes “who’s to say you’re never wrong? who’s to say that i’m not already gone..”

then the final line goes “i can feel it in the air”

i hope its a hint of the “coming”

  • daenarys

Another Cook vet surfacing from the trenches to say this: loved the 1st snippet (his tone on “Who’s to say you’re never wrooongg…” unf! and yes, he kept his promise on more Piano (my personal ngh is that Cook plays it live, woo! C’mon dude, wtf!me LOL). Love the opening riff of Paper Heart, you only need to hear that song once and 3 seconds in you already know it’s that song. And the lyrics snippet is freaking me out: “I’m leaning on the edge, of jumping off the ledge,” is my venue right now. Not doing it, but definitely leaning there. Spooky. But brilliant. AngstyCook goes to my head.

And I also loved the snippet of song no 2 which he sound tested at Busch (but didn’t sing) once in a galaxy far far away. Ballady, but definitely vocally challenging. I hope it makes the album. So far, so good.

  • tinawina

tinawina, you know I heart you anyways, but especially for what you just wrote, because you perfectly described how I feel about David. And articulated perfectly so I won’t have to struggle to describe it myself!

I just saw this sma11ie! **hugs** I borrowed our brain yesterday :D

  • 123abc456

I love this video. I like the sound of both songs. I seriously cannot wait until the record comes out. David looks like he is at the end of the process in this video. He also looks nice. :)

  • sma11ie

Love it when you borrow our brain and write intelligent things that I can somehow claim shared credit for here, tinawina :D. Haha.

Yes, cookcricket– Kris in glasses is pretty adorbs. He looks like a little school boy haha.

Btw, watched it finally– erm, like 1000 times. Love both snippets. We’ve heard all of Paper Heart, and I already said I love it, so nice to hear a bit of it in recorded form. Also loved the intro to the other song. Love the piano! Wee!

Okay back to shallow- I like his watch! Haha. Waves to Jim.

  • Incipit

In line with the description for the Teaser at DCO – “David Cook is prepping the release of his new album and we have exclusive video footage of David working in the studio.” - David tweeted today that he was starting on the last batch of songs.

“I feel you closer than you are” is starting to sound very true, with that news of the last batch of songs being ‘prepped for release’ on top of a video packed with positive vibes, inferences and objective facts….expertly edited into one minute.

    IMO.
