    Finally something concrete…
    BRING IT!

  • istersay

I’m so ready, hurry David! :)

  • wordnerdarchie

Now I have an idea of when the “madness” is going to start … my work might suffer, though. ;)

  • ladymadonna

Camp Cook has deactivated the cone of silence! It’s on like Donkey Kong.

  • Lauren88

I can’t sleep which is annoying. Lol. I read this and felt better instantly. This is great news! Hopefully a single announcement is coming any minute!

  • karenc

That was a terrific interview. It’s great to hear he’s so close with the album, and I think he genuinely feels excited about it.

I can’t wait until it comes out, I think I’m going to love it. I just love the snippet in the video.

And since this is a David Cook thread and I can gush as much as I want to, just want to say, I love his music, and I think he’s an amazing person also. He’s really becoming my favorite artist. There is just something about his voice and style of music that I love so much amd really connect with, it’s like he’s everything I always liked in music in one person. He has inspired me to do so many things, even listening to music more and going to concerts. There are others that I am a fan of both from Idol and not from idol, but not to the extent I like David.

Ok, I’ll stop gushing now ;)

  • wordnerdarchie

karenc, just gush away. It’s been a long drought. LOL!

  • jennyl

I’ve been waiting for this album since June last year. Guess I can wait another 3-5 months. lol!

  • luly

Good to hear that the album is about to be finished. I hope that this album will be a big success for David.
I wonder when the first single will be released.

  • karenc

    July,

I think the first singles are release 4-6 weeks before the album, so probably Feb- April.

  • Suzanne

Way to take advantage of promo on Am Idol. I don’t know why every 19 artist doesn’t release every album during the season so the can get a performance of the first single in from to 20 to 30 million. I bet David Archuleta’s cd would have sold more if it hadn’t been released in Oct with no Idol machine promo.

Can’t wait for Cookie’s single. It has been too long.

  • cheese

    Yay, quasi-news!

I refuse to wait until May. I’ll give Cookie an April 19 deadline for the album release, haha. I’ll expect the single by mid-March. And a tour date in DC on a weekend when the time comes.

  • Fergie

Thank goodness. Actual timeline FTW. The fandom angst simmers down to a dull roar, lol. On the shallow side, he looks sooo pretty. Gorgeous eyes, perfect skin that no man should even have……and lips. Ok, I’m done gushing. I can’t wait for this record, he seems really happy with it. I think with DCTR1, David was giving the party line about it being exactly what he would have done even if he hadn’t won idol ( he wasn’t going to bad mouth some of the play it safe choices of the label), but I get the feeling DCTR2 is his baby 100% and he can’t wait for us to hear it. I hardly ever do this….but…..SQUEEEEEE

  • Joyed

I am glad he mentioned some actual months as a time-frame – I think this may be a first. In the past I think we’ve only hear seasons or quarters mentioned.

He looks so happy and excited – I can’t wait to hear what they were able to come up with. With many of the new songs, I have been really into the instrumentation – it is so obvious that he had more time to compose for this album.

On a shallow note, he looks great. I’ve always been into him for the voice first and foremost – thinking he was cute was a nice bonus. But he does need to master a look for when he goes out to promote the album and I think he has found it.

Also, the interviewer did a great job getting the video she needed and doing some research – I’m impressed that she used the teaser vid within her video to add additional context. Way to go, online reporter!

cheese, with such power, as you clearly have, comes great responsibility – be sure to use it wisely! ;)

  • fadetowhite

OK – March to May…I can wait…I can wait.

But I can’t wait to hear the damn thing!

Oh – and he does look really good there.

  • IndyMuse

Yay, straight from his own mouth! I am going bonkers waiting for this record. What little we’ve heard has me super excited.

  • sma11ie

WHEEEE!!! MARCH.TO.MAY! MARCH.TO.MAY! MARCH.TO.MAY! Everyone, chant! Haha. I have to go watch this now.

  • tinawina

Some solid news! I don’t believe it! Cool.

  • Trina

If I were RCA I’d be doing my damndest to time the album drop to coincide with an Idol performance. IMO that’s even better than a November/December release given he was a popular winner.

    pleasepleaseplease!

  • tierbee

And a tour date in DC on a weekend when the time comes.

Yes, please :) I mean, I’ve seen him a bunch of times so I’m greedy but it’ll be new stuff! Gimme!

This makes this sick girl feel ever so much better. Thanks, Cook, haha.

Camp Cook has deactivated the cone of silence!

Haha, yes – hooray! So ready to see things get rolling. And yeah, gushing is perfectly understandable, we’ve waited a really, really long time, dammit. He’s looking so good. Sigh. He’s going to be ready to run at the Race for Hope — we’ll see if it is rainy/cold like the first year he did it or 300 degrees like last year, lol.

  • mon_mon

March to May! March to May! I am joining the chant now Smallie :)
I am just so so so happy with anticipation.

  • unidentified

I am so looking forward to David’s new album, then the tour. He does look extremely happy, his eyes are sparkly. So I am taking that as he is really excited how the album is sounding. March-May, hopefully do the single on Idol. So yay!

  • cookmerized

march to may?!!?!? what a great piece of news to wake up with today. i wish it was january-february, but i’ll take it. what’s another couple of months between friends. damn he’s looking handsome.

  • Incipit

He does look extremely happy, his eyes are sparkly.

^^This! Even in the little snip from yesterday, he lights up when he says “I gotta record comin’ out.”

MARCH.TO.MAY – Good chant, sounds like the rally cry to a parade for new DC&TA music…for “Everything they want and more.”

I have to join in that march – may it come soonest! ;)

  • tierbee

He looks happy (and sparkly haha) and we get the laugh, which is always a bonus. Love that laugh.

    Aw, David. Hurry up, ok?

  • 123abc456

I am more excited about this album than ever. Basically because he seems so happy with the end result. He was glowing. Can I just say Gah. Anyway as far as a release date March to May sounds good but it was tentative. But it is a timeframe to look forward to.

  • Curlin

Too bad she didn’t ask him about a release date for his first single off the album but I like the edit job on the interview/video posted. Oh yeah, Cook is lookin fine!

  • music78girl

I am SUPER excited for this! So ready to hear the new album and (hopefully) seeing him on tourrrrr fairly soon after. I’m demanding like that lol.

  • MollyAnnMay

    Well. Good morning!

Fearless prediction: we will get a single drop around Valentine’s Day and it will be Paper Heart. (Who else but Cook would put out an anti-romance anthem for Valentine’s Day?) That riff is the earworm of all earworms and as it’s bounced around the internet as part of that little promo clip, I bet it’s subliminally lodged in quite a few ears.

Now all the experts can tell me why I’m wrong. *g*

In all seriousness, yay for new music! Finally!

  • ohnonotagain

Turning cartwheels here, he looks great and very pleased with the album. He likes to tease us but he does keep up with what we want and I think these months he gives us is the real deal. Yes, finally new music.

  • pattycake

Not to rain on any parades, but I heard “spring” release in 2009. He did not say March-May of 2011. I cannot hold my breathe anymore as its causing brain damage.
On another note, like the hair!

  • tierbee

I cannot hold my breathe anymore as its causing brain damage.

Haha, that sounds like what I say – “I’d hold my breath, but I don’t want to turn blue!”

Believe! You must believe! Because if it’s another year the fandom will implode and eat each other like a bunch of cannibals anyway so… we just won’t make it another year ;)

  • Incipit

Fearless prediction: we will get a single drop around Valentine’s Day and it will be Paper Heart.

Heh. I would Flove the Album being titled Paper Heart, and that the first single – and I’ve had the same fleeting idea of Valentines Day – mostly because of David’s fondness for “bookends” and symbolism, and the 1500 Valentines he signed and had put into the cup holders at Beau Rivage Casino on Feb 14th of ’09. Paper Hearts, all.

  • GreenHippo

OOOOOOOOOOHHHH SQUEEEEEEEEE – Happy Dance Happy Dance Happy Dance. Why do I feel and behave like a Teenager again???
Oh yeah news from David Cook!!!
    March to May!

  • MollyAnnMay

the 1500 Valentines he signed and had put into the cup holders at Beau Rivage Casino on Feb 14th

See, this is reason 3,782 why I could never be a celebrity famous someone people want autographs from (or whatever Cook is at the moment). When I have to sign my name more than 5 times it makes me want to cry. OTOH, that’s a very nice gesture — I hadn’t heard that before.

I didn’t experience the ramp up to the last album — came to the party too late. This is fun.

  • ladymadonna

They were Winnie the Pooh Valentines! Paper Hearts indeed. That was the second night of the neverending tour. Damn – has it been two years?

A Valentines-week single release would indeed be nice symmetry (and we know how much Mr. Analog Heart –> Paper Heart likes his symmetry). It’s slightly early for the presumed timeline, but not out of the realm. It’s traditionally a strong sales week too, and one where Dave in particular has seen a lift the past few years. Of course that’s when Gaga is releasing, but a nice angsty Cookian rocker could be smart counter-programming.

I’ll call this one plausible (though my gut says the single will drop a bit later – like to correspond with an Idol performance early in the finals).

  • tierbee

Aww, I loved his little Valentines. I wish I had one :)

Paper Heart would be a lovely album title…

I need new Cook music on my iPod. Yup.

  • _nyanyanie

    finalllllyyy…

but i was like.. “MaY”? that was too far!! LOL whatever, i forgot that he’ll do possible media rounds before that and a new single…

    bring it on!!!

  • standtotheright

If I were RCA I’d be doing my damndest to time the album drop to coincide with an Idol performance

I agree. I would much rather let the single build on radio before the AI appearance (which would also allow for getting some steam at HAC before moving on CHR, a strategy that a big splashy single performance launch would make awkward). Then a performance would occur when it is hopefully getting airplay in multiple formats and more recognizable to the casual listener and would serve as an inducement to check out the rest of the album rather than just buying the single. The boy moves albums; far better to capitalize on that when the album is commercially available product, IMO.

This is certainly how I would prefer to see it play out – I’d love to see them get the single out first, gain some traction, and then perform on Idol to get a bigger bang the week of the album release. The boy does indeed move albums like a mofo, but with the industry continuing to trend towards singles (even if I feel the tiniest bit of backlash to that trend bubbling under the surface), I wouldn’t be surprised to see them attempt to leverage the Idol stage on behalf of the single rather than (specifically) the album. I think both scenarios have their benefits, and its certainly not as if an Idol performance slot is the only variable at play in determining the promo strategy.

  • aga

    OMG, exciting!!!

  • MollyAnnMay

Ahaha, not just any old Valentines but Winnie the Pooh Valentines? He is diabolical.

And ooh, a “plausible” from Mythbuster ladymadonna! I’ll take it.

It’s traditionally a strong sales week too, and one where Dave in particular has seen a lift the past few years.

Huh. That’s interesting. I never know how what is popular intersects with what I like, but do any number crunchers know if the band Alpha Rev has made any impression at all? They’re a lot more rhythmically mellow than DC and his band, but the melodic part of their music reminds me of some of the newer DC melodies. (They’re also still an Indie band I think, so the push for them wouldn’t be comparable, but I’m still curious. They’re very good, btw.)

So yeah, I like them and I like DC, but it seems so difficult for more than 1 non-pop, non-dance, non-techno, non-rap song at a time to get any traction these days. (And thus begins the angst portion of our program.)

ETA: Just to be clear, my Fearless Prediction is for the single, not the album. I’ll only go out on a limb for the single. Heh.

  • Truthiness

    Yay! timeframe! and soon.

Excellent news and glad DC is beginning to get the word out, about his album, so people can now know to expect it!

I certainly wouldn’t use Alpha Rev as a reason to angst about Cook. I’m from Austin and have followed Alpha Rev casually since Casey McPherson left Endochine. They are a good live band (the 7-man lineup with strings and keys makes for really interesting instrumentation) and have a solid local and regional following here, but it’s a whole other ballpark.

They signed to Hollywood records a few years ago so no longer indie, and I would say Hollywood gave them a good push (they toured with One Republic and Sara Bareilles amongst others). Their song ‘New Morning’ broke into the very lower reaches of the Hot100, went Top-10 on AAA, and made some inroads on HAC as well. VH1 was supporting them strongly for awhile as a You Oughta Know artist. Haven’t heard much of anything out of their follow-up single (‘Phoniex Burn’). Successful mid-level band but I don’t see them as a template for Cook and his upcoming release.

  • MollyAnnMay

Thanks LadyM. I didn’t realize AR had been signed — I should have guessed since it was with Sara Bareilles that I first saw them. They *are* good live.

The different contributions to success that label push and the actual music itself make are interesting topics for speculation. Until I started reading here I knew nothing about the former, but my opinion on the latter hasn’t changed.

    I like some of what is popular, especially the new, more melodic pop of Bruno Mars and Cee-Lo, some of the rock that mixes well with rap (Paramore FTW) and the success of Florence + the machine and Sara Bareilles (er, I think they’re successful) is encouraging, but I still loathe the bulk of popular music, which sounds like anti-music to me. It will be interesting to see how Cook intersects with it. Given a good single that is fully representative of him, maybe he’ll drives a stake right through it. {/dreamer}

  • tinawina

One thing I found interesting from the interview was the use of the term U2-esque to describe the snippets, and DC’s agreement with that. NOTE: I AM IN NO WAY SAYING THIS ALBUM WILL BE AS GOOD AS A U2 ALBUM. :) It matches what he said early on about this record having bigger choruses and a more epic sound, and about pushing his voice. Add that with the piano-driven thing and I’m starting to get a sense of where he may be going with this project, This sounds like it may be building off the sound of a certain DCTR bonus track I really liked, so I am happy. :)

  • ladymadonna

I caught that too tinawina. I’m on my phone so can’t look up the quote, but didn’t Shirley Halperin make the U2-esque comparison when she sat in and got a sneak-peak of 2-3 of the new tracks early in the recording process? It definitely does dovetail with everything Dave has said about experimenting with dynamics and more complex sonic architecture. I think I’m going to love hearing how Dave’s vision for the sound of this album was translated in the studio (scissors on guitar strings, children’s choir, and all), and then to hear how he and and the band strip back that sound to take these songs out on the road.

  • Incipit

Tinawina, your post made me think of “Everything they want, and more.” What a way to raise the bar! Something David has never been slow to do – but still, one wonders if he’s fully cognizant of all the ponies out there in the fandom – the various, and sometimes completely opposite directions people are wishing for? The one bonus sort of track I would flove to hear more like is KoTN – the other two, I came to like IDIFY very much, but only in concert – never got into MLR. It’s true that I don’t worry about this – just wonder….and marvel at how well he juggled all those ponies in the air last time, once he got to touring.

Since I’m burned out wondering about the song tracks, with little to no factual input – and I’m intrigued with the instrumentation – but can’t go any further there without hearing more either – maybe I’ll switch to wondering about the feel and direction of DCTR2…with marginally more statements to be going on with. Need to do something besides go on a March to May, after all.

    *Snerk* @Myself.

ETA. Doh. IDIFY isn’t a bonus track – it just felt like one after the way it was morphed in concert into a whole other song, sorta kinda. And Breathe Tonight, with My Last Request, are the two that never connected with me – we won’t even talk about CBTM. *snerk*

That’s what I meant by different ponies, Tinawina. It’s gonna be interesting, but WTF!Cook always is.

  • FolkFan

Awesome! Waiting for a single announcement….

  • tinawina

Ladymadonna, I’m on my phone too! Yay for smartphones! LOL. I do think you are right about Shirley Halperin. And I love your description of the hoped for instrumentation.

Incipit, the bonus track I was talking about was Breathe Tonight, but I would really like to hear a few things in the Kiss In The Neck direction as well. That and a few pretty ballads that could sound good stripped down and I will have gotten all my ponies. Honestly just getting one pony is enough at this point!

  • MollyAnnMay

You all hear echos of Breathe Tonight? Huh. That song seems very organically part of the DCTR1 sound to me. I haven’t listened to it for a while (though I do like it), but it has lots of wall of sound guitar, no?

The 2 songs on the clip, plus You and I, sound very different to me, with the much more prominent keyboards, especially, but also more complex instrumentation all around. Maybe it’s the vocal in Paper Heart that has the Breathe tonight feel? ::listens to Breathe Tonight:: Okay, I can hear that.

That may be a good thing, that the vocal will feel familiar enough for casual fans to recognize but I think (hope!) the instrumentation is going to be significantly different.

I do agree that in the best of all possible outcomes, I would *love* some KOTN-ike rockers on the album. These guys do that sort of song SO well, though integrating them with the more melodic, hooky stuff will be an interesting challenge.

That’s a lot of ponies. But if anyone can herd them together…

  • tinawina

You all hear echos of Breathe Tonight?

Well I can’t speak for anyone else, I just meant that Breathe Tonight has that epic big chorus U2-ish feel to me, albeit with more guitar than he’s been talking about. So in some ways I think the descriptions he’s been using for his music point to something more in that vein than say, a Light On vein, which is what I actually didn’t want. So I am happy. That is all.

  • MollyAnnMay

the descriptions he’s been using for his music point to something more in that vein than say, a Light On vein

Oh absolutely! I see what you’re saying.

It feels almost traitorous for me to say it, because Light On played in the AI S8 promo clip is actually what hooked me into DC’s music in the first place, and I do still like the song. But I also am hoping for something a step more… musical? than that. And I think we’re going to get it. Yay!

  • fuzzywuzzy

the 1500 Valentines he signed and had put into the cup holders at Beau Rivage Casino on Feb 14th of ‘09.

They were Winnie the Pooh Valentines!

I didn’t know that David did this. What a sweetheart! Very nice interview and I’m glad that Cook fans have a “quasi” release date for his new CD. :)

  • Keel

This is what happens when I go on (a short) vacation. After two straight days off the grid skiing (finally activated the internet at our ski house), I come back and find out he’s FINALLy started talking timelines? I should go on vacation more often.

If I wasn’t so physically exhausted, I would be flailing like a monkey on caffeine! *flails mentally*

  • fadetowhite

Yep – me too: It’s what’s got me excited, because I think it’s the area of his song writing that needed to develop the most, to raise it to the next level and it seems to be what they have focused on…
