Missouri native and American Idol winner, David Cook, sang the National Anthem before the Home Run Derby yesterday at Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City. The game was part of the festivities leading up to Tuesday night’s MLB All Star game airing on FOX.

The game aired on ESPN, but unfortunately, not the National Anthem–although a Zac Brown Band performance prior to the game did air.

Luckily, we’ve got a video of the song taken by a fan inside the stadium. Check it out.

    Very, nice job !
I was hoping he would go up (not down) in that one part where he sings:  ”that our flag was still there” , and he did :-)

David has become quite adept at hitting this song out of the park ;-)

I really like that one small change too, seldomused. It’s as if that’s the heart of the song – and he emphasizes it by giving it the highest note. (someone who speaks music could say what it is – I just like the way it resonates.)

David always sings the SSB respectfully – gotta say, though – I love the adjectives the sports reporters use for David’s NA, and you just know they have heard plenty of people sing the “Star Spangled Banner” in their careers. So far I’ve read, “Pristine”, “Stunning”. and “Superb”. I think I’ll start collecting them. Heh.

I thought David Cook sang the National Anthem as he always does, Respectfully and with feeling. The sound was awesome on that video. Thanks to whoever recorded.

Did anyone notice that he appears to be wearing the jacket from the CBTM video?  Very handsome!

Well, you can’t say he doesn’t recycle. #environmentalist

Gorgeous singing, gorgeous dude. His voice still melts me. What a nice way to wake up on a Saturday. Wish I woke up everyday with a cookie serenade.

As always, a great rendition. The man can sing anything.

Very nice job. Too bad ESPN didn’t air it.

Love the way David sings the National Anthem! Goes to show you don’t have to have all the thrills and trills for this to sound incredible!
Fantastic job, Mr. Cook! Proud fan!

Woulda been some contender for Fielder this year as Cook always knocks it outta the park too!   ;o)

Close up of the jacket from an MLB photo – it looks similar, but not quite, IMO.

Incipit, extremely similar, enough that I think it’s the same jacket.  The only thing I can’t see on the video because of lighting but clear on the photo, is the stitching line across the front (above the pocket area).  But the 2 tabs are the same on the shoulder, the same flash of red around the top button, the front button pocket on each side, even the same setting of button holes down the front. IMO of course. ;)

Thank you MJ and whoever took that video! Oh when, when will I have the chance to hear and see him live?!

  • Incipit

wordnerdarchie. on second thought, you may be absolutely right – I was relying on memory, instead of checking on the video, And that little bit of color around the top button is distinctive. He ‘does’ recycle, as Sassycatz said! *wink* (Or maybe that jacket was in his home in KC – and everything else was in Nashville? Moving can be tough that way. Heh.)

It’s also true, As David noted in the FOX4 interview mj linked -  if the performance had been less than superb – there would be plenty to say – but a good job is taken for granted, or something.

I wish people with musical knowledge could comment on ‘why’ a performance is good – as easily as we comment on what we don’t care for. Share the knowledge, as it were. I have some idea for this one, but I don’t “Know”.

    IMO.

ETA: For DCAIfanHelsinki – Videographer credits go to @vikkerskc, great job!
