David Cook and guitarist Neal Tiemann, not only performed some beautiful acoustic tunes at yesterday’s big Christmas at Rockefeller Center special, but also managed to squeeze in a stop at Sirius Satellite radio where they sang acoustic versions of “Light On” and “Life on the Moon”.

Lucky New Yorkers got to see two performance, as the local NBC New York affiliate expanded coverage of the Rockefeller ceremony. They not only saw David and Neal perform “Happy Christmas (War is Over) but were able to hear David and Neil’s beautiful acoustic rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Videos after the JUMP…

loved the jacket and the scarf!!!
    WTG DC!

  • gingerly

I so love acoustic Dave. He just makes me happy!

  • SashaB

Thanks MJ. That acoustic LOTM is so hauntingly pretty.

  • weareallinnocent

    Gorgeous! Thanks, mj~

  • Ashley19

Oh.. I LOVE “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.. :)
I think both performances are absolutely beautiful.
    Thank you

  • CathyMK

Acoustic Dave and Neal are just magical together. Acoustic Life on the Moon sounds great. He’s done that song live a number of times now. I wonder if it’s in the running to be the next single, or if he just really likes singing it? (Or both?)

  • spencer

Like the jacket and the scarf!

  • Jolene

I just posted this on the Rockefeller thread, only to discover this much more apropos thread!
I made an mp3 file of the Acoustic Life on the Moon, if anyone wants it: Acoustic LOTM.

  • shell29

^^Thank you Jolene! I just love LOTM, and this acoustic version is wonderful.

  • Garnetstar

AcousticDave! FTW. Yeah I love that version of LOTM. Amazing. Loved the falsetto. Wow. Impressed.

  • Jolene

It is interesting to me that we got acoustic LOTM, out of all of the songs he could’ve done. So far when there was room for two songs, the 2nd one was always Declaration, right?

I know David did plenty of acoustic LOs in previous acoustic radio sessions, but were there other acoustic songs in any of them?

Anyway, yeah, I love acoustic Dave alot. I still think his acoustic version of The World I Know on Ellen was his best talk show performance yet.

  • Keel

Thanks mj for the links. Loved acoustic LOTM. BTW, according to David Cook’s myspace blog, Neil Tiemann’s name is actually spelled Neal.

  • weareallinnocent

Not to be too greedy, but anyone have an mp3 of acoustic Light On? Pretty please? :-) And, thanks!

  • hypertwink

So far when there was room for two songs, the 2nd one was always Declaration, right?

I don’t think Declaration works well acoustically…or IMO, there are other songs in DCTR that work better acoustic. Also, I think that LOTM and LO kind of work well together as a set.

Speaking of DC and acoustic performances… :)

The Johnny and Jayde morning show on XL106.7 in Orlando talked to him today, and officially announced that he is the special guest at their XL’lent Acoustic Christmas show next Sunday! Yay!!! The other artists are Gavin DeGraw, Natasha Bedingfield, and Colbie Caillat. Flyleaf was supposed to be there too, but they had to cancel due to some kind of medical issue. Anyway, I am SO totally going. So, if there are any Orlando peeps around here who are going, let me know. :)

Anyway, you can listen to the interview here. He was in the airport when he called in, so there was lots of background noise and stuff, but it was a fun interview anyway. Thank God I was running late to work this morning, because otherwise I would have missed it! :)

  • elisad

Whoa, David & Gavin DeGraw! Nice, I’m jealous!

  • Jolene

Thanks for the interview link, Sarah! And sounds like you have a truly awesome show to look forward to. I wonder what he’s going to sing.

Didn’t we get another acoustic song off the album other than LO, or is LOTM the first one? I’d love to hear acoustic Lie, more than anything.
Hopefully more acoustic sessions are ahead.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Yeah, Elisa, I’d pay the ticket price to see Gavin alone (HUGE fan), so DC being there sealed the deal and Natasha Bedingfield is a bonus. :) I’m not a huge Colbie Caillat fan, but I do like some of her songs. I’m thinking she’ll probably be good, so looking forward to her, too. And I actually fly back into Orlando at 5:30 that night from visiting my parents, so I will be driving straight to the HOB from the airport. But DC and Gavin are sooooo worth it. :)

As far as what he will play other than LO, I really have no idea. I’m definitely crossing my fingers for “Lie.” What I’m wondering is who will be with him. Since it’s acoustic, I’m thinking maybe just Neal. I don’t have a camera that takes video, though, so I may have to see what I can do about finding one. :)

The XL106.7 dj’s really love him, so that’s a huge plus. They’re kinda slow sometimes about picking up songs from new artists (it took about 2 or 3 months for them to play Jordin here), so I was totally excited when they did that first interview with him before the album dropped.

  • FolkFan

I just love AcousticDave performances. He always seems to bring out something extra in them, and confirm that he doesn’t really need studio extras in order to sound really, really good. And I love Neal during these acoustic performances. It’s getting to be where I want a split-screen—one on DC as he performs, and one on Neal so I can see what he’s doing on his guitar.

MJ: I seem to recall from your review of the record that you liked the lyrics of Life on the Moon, but not the music. I’d be interested to know if hearing it acoustically cause you to like the song better.

  • Michelle

Jolene – the Walmart Soundcheck version of “Lie” is mostly acoustic (and lovely!)

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Acoustic Dave wins every single time. I absolutely love acoustic LOTM – especially the falsetto!

  • mac

Thank you for the mp3 of LOTM Jolene!

    Yes, it did. :) .

  • FolkFan

    Good to know. :)

  • Garnetstar

Yes sorry to interrupt. Love all the acoustic stuff David Neal and unidentified 3rd guitar player. But…..I bought my tickets a few weeks ago not even knowing if he would really be there. I am sorry to hear that anyone inf flyleaf is sick but I am happy that David will have more time to sing. :)

  • ShariG

The third guy looked like Joey Clement to me. I love David but thought his voice sounded a little strained in the two Sirius videos. He has had a bad cold. It has to be hard to perform when you aren’t feeling up to par.

  • Shook

I’ll be in Orlando also for the show at the HOB-I spoke to them today and the venue holds 2100 people if sold out. They are also very strict on no cameras and videos and someone said they will even do a metal search. They did say you can use your camera phone.

  • sunchick

    *adds acoustic LOTM to iPod*

Lovely. The “here are my terms” line always gets me, and it’s even more potent in this acoustic version.

  • CathyMK

I hope someone can record the concert somehow. Colbie Caillait and David together has been one of my dream duets. It should be a great show for those of you who can go!

  • khomphuong

Xmas songs are not for Cook, IMO…sorry.

  • FolkFan

I still can’t quite believe that he was suffering from a cold when he performed Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Happy Christmas, and possibly the sirius performances as well. When I get colds, I basically lay around, sounding awful and being lazy. He’s flying all over the place putting out these lovely performances….

  • GEEK4VOCAB

I absolutely loved those two Sirius performances. He’s amazing. Even with a cold!

  • WestiesRule

They showed the early feed here in CT also. I thought the show was 2 hours everywhere. I’m glad he did the John Lennon song in the 2nd hour.

  • Squirrelly

OMG Life on the Moon is my very favorite song!!!!! David Cook needs to put out a video with this song. When is it going single–anyone know???? Please, I want to hear this song playing on the radio–AND PERMANENT, TOO!!!! Please, David Cook!!! Why don’t they put out a Permanent video with the dancers from Canada’s SYTYCD (and do it similar to the video of Light On showing David and going back and forth to the dance). I think that would be killer!!

  • proudmom

He looks great in this picture. No icky guyliner in sight. Hooray!

  • Jolene

Someone asked for acoustic Light On, so HERE it is.

Note – this isn’t the version from Sirius, in which David was sick and slightly hoarse. I had another video of acoustic LO from an interview he did with WPLJ, and I think the version he did there is the best LO of them all. Including the original.

So, in the festive sharing spirit of the holidays… :D

  • FolkFan

I do think that the WPLJ LO is the best one to date. It wasn’t the first acoustic LO that we heard, but he and Neal had it going on, big time.

  • msergio

Sarah I live in Orlando and I am really trying to go to the show but I’m not sure if I will be able…I heard the interview on XL and actually emailed Johnny and Jayde to thank them for having DC on the show and promoting him. Jayde emailed me back which was awesome!!!

Hope to be there at HOB…but I think I would die if I actually saw DC live and I don’t think my hubby would be too happy for the cause of my death! LOL

  • tinydcfan

Jolene, you ROCK….almost as much as DC ;) Thank you!!

  • pinkersweet

glad to hear that people really like DC acoustic performance as much as i do..neal is awesome too..they really makes me cry that day, both of the DC Christmas performance really touching,he just sing it from the bottom of his heart,u can see it through his face…DC looks very cold but he manage put out a standout performance,he even 10x better than beyonce :clap_tb: :snake_ee:…im just speechless…..see both of the performance here

  • BootStar

Jolene, you so rock! Your mp3s are so much better than what I normally can find. Thank you. Acoustic Cook is my favorite! :biggrin_wp:

  • cookcricket

    Jolene, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I really think if DC ever puts out an all acoustic album he’d gain even more fans. One of my closest friends didn’t really like LOTM until she heard the acoustic version!!! Really, imo, he’s unstoppable!

  • Jolene

Awww, my pleasure! Just happy you guys are enjoying it.

  • DivaE

yeah, i agree about the acoustic album would grab different fans- my mom LOVED him on AI and TOML is still her fave song- I bought her DCTR and she says it’s a little too much screaming for her.

  • oceana

Those little girls waving to the camera are distracting. Wish they would turn around and listen to the music. :)

I love acoustic cookie. One gripe with the introduction to this song: Al Roker and the woman comparing Cook’s 55 mil votes to Obama’s 68 mil. No, no, no. Can’t compare them because on American Idol, people vote multiple times. It irks me when the media is sloppy with the facts and gives the wrong impression, even if technically they didn’t lie.

I’ve heard many tv people compare AI votes to presidential elections. I think it further erodes the dignity of the presidency to trivialize it that way … especially when it’s misleading.
