The things I do for you kids! I suffered through FOX’s awful New Year’s Eve Live in order to record David Cook’s performances. You’re welcome! Ha ha.

Robbie Knievel jumping over fake volcanoes at the Mirage? Seriously? And that poser “Mind Freak” dude Chris Angel? What?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Daughtry performance was taped back in April at the Revolution Lounge and can be found elsewhere on the net? Yes?

Anyway, David Cook and band filmed “Light On” and “Declaration” last night in front of a crowd at the Mirage. No “Declaration” on the show tonight, though. No, it was more important to watch a crappy video about Cirque du Soleil that was mostly recycled video from American Idol.

Cook was also presented with his platinum record for “Time of My Life” in a rather awkward exchange. A bit later, his performance of “Light On” aired. Check out the video, after the jump…

Wow! He looked and sounded great! I missed him so much! This was a good way to start the year.

Thanks for posting, MJ! This international fan really appreciates all you do. Happy New Year everyone!!! :)

  • caringgirl

The show was crappy, but cook looked and sounded awesome. Love the shirt he had on. Thats one good looking man i tell ya.

  • mac

Great performance. He looked cute in the hat. That girl that handed it to him is going to have a great souvenir!

  • gingerly

I ummm slept through the show, so thanks for the youtubes. I think having watched the youtubes, I’m not all that disappointed that I slept through the show. I’m more disappointed that my daughter woke me because she didn’t know how to uncork her champagne…oh where did I go wrong?

  • cookcricket

Okay, watched this on TV, while celebrating with some friends and their families, and I thought the presentation was awkward. Now watching it again, I figured out part was due to the way the guy presented it – as if DC didn’t even know that TOML had gone platinum.
Also, the guy asked about NYE this yr. and here DC was sitting with about what, 20 other people, who seemed to be just sitting there…

LO was good, not his best one IMO, but really good and probably the highlight of the entire show.

We had a bunch of kids all excited about the “big” jump and the build up. After it was over one of them said, that was just a practice jump…

Thanks for taping and posting mj, it was nice to watch again without the distraction of other peeps around.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

So….David Cook was on the wrong network tonight, apparently.

I actually recorded this, but…thanks for posting the video so I won’t have to subject myself to that other torture. :D

  • gigglesmo3

No à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Declarationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the show tonight, though. No, it was more important to watch a crappy video about Cirque du Soleil that was mostly recycled video from American Idol.

    heh, they are probably saving that footage for next yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“liveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ NYE show :rolleyes_wp:

  • Barbariba

David was the only saving grace for Fox’s New Year’s Eve Show.He sounded great and … well we all know about how gorgeous he is.
I can’t believe the show was that bad!
Thanks for posting the video of LO, mj.

  • hypertwink

That was good. Not his best but a solid effort from Cookie. I heard that the other NYE show was better, just for the fact that Ryan had both Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas a few feet from each other on stage. Awesome move, Ryan! :lol_tb:

ETA: The picture with the platinum Rainbow’s pretty.

  • phyllis_0227

This guy is made for live performances. Compared to Daughtry and Stone Temple Pilots, IMO, he outperformed and out sang by a mile. Those getting to see his college tour will see a fantastic show I bet!!! Oh and from USAtoday IdolChatter it is written that DC’s album sales have hit 812,000 and is ranked #7 for Christmas album sales. http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/

  • Keel

I thought that was an outstanding performance of LO. He sounded great as usual. But man, did that stage look tiny or what? Thanks for the heads up about the lameness of the rest of the show MJ. I was at a party and didn’t know whether it was worth it to watch the other performances (S. Weiland especially) via my DVR.

  • oceana

That was the worst NYE show I’ve ever seen. It was horrible. The man talked through half the show, and it was all about boring Kneival. Nothing seemed live about it. The stages people performed in were tiny and obviously not real concerts.

DC band was great as always, but the odd camera work and cramped stage, not to mention the poor acoustics didn’t do it justice. Neal seemed to be standing way off to the side and we could only really see him once. This was the worst looking of all their tv performances to date.

I rarely watch anything on Fox. They know how to butcher any show. AI is the only thing I usually watch there.

Even Chris Daughtry didn’t sound good and he usually sounds good live. And Leonard Skynard, what a joke, they only showed a bit of them as the show ended. What a ripoff. The only good moment was Bill and Hilary in the crowd dancing and hugging.

The Dick Clark show in contrast was marvelous. Taylor Swift did a medley that I had to immediately play back and watch again, I liked it that much, and Kellie Pickler was warm and funny as always. Ryan kept that show hopping.

I kept thinking, next year, David Cook, next year you get to be on the Dick Clark show. Screw Fox, those idiots.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

omg that had to be the worst show ever egads

but was awesome to see davidC :)

  • MagazineFreak

Worst. NYE. Show. Ever. Fox really should be ashamed of themselves for passing that off as entertainment. DC was the only part that saved it. Would not have killed them to show “Declaration”. And horrible camera work. You would not have known Neal was there except for his solo.

And quite deceitful of them to pass off that Daughtry performance as new. It didn’t even sound very good (unfortunate, b/c I’ve seen them live and they’re great).

  • jpfan

Only caught bits of this, thank God. What happened to Cat (from SYTYCD) hosting it in Times Square as in year’s past. That must have cost more than $10 to produce I guess.

The platinum record thing was extremely awkward and cheesy. Hopefully, they’ll do a better job when he returns on Idol and they can give him one for the album. What a trainwreck. But the good news is that probably few people actually watched the whole thing.

  • reinharv

And quite deceitful of them to pass off that Daughtry performance as new. It didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even sound very good (unfortunate, b/c Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen them live and theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re great).

I too was not impressed with Daughtry’s performance but they must have used that performance because it looked like it fit into the setting to fool you. I sure didn’t realize it wasn’t new.

The only saving grace was Cook on that show and he sure got a lot of face time–4 separate incidents–Wow! That little bit of “dead time” right after they presented him with his platinum album was awkward. Who the heck was producing this and or directing it? I thought this was taped on the 30th so why didn’t they clean that up. Even if it was “live” there is always a slight delay between what is actually happening and what the viewer sees on TV. That is why when you do watch something “live” and someone says something inappropriate (swear) on air–they can quickly edit it out or bleep it on the fly.

I have to admit though that the host & co-host were very lame and amateurish.

  • elisad

ETA: The picture with the platinum Rainbowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s pretty.

I know, right? I want that picture.

  • kathrynTX

AACCK! ITA FOX had the WORST New Year’s Eve show EVAH. GEEE-ZUS. And that host guy, not Spike, the other guy. I kept hitting mute when he would talk, which really just made it funnier! And I’ve read Spike F’s name but I’d never seen him. He really needs a new name cause he is NOT a “Spike.” Come on.

Yes yes the only saving grace and the ONLY reason I watched any of that horrid horrid show was Mr. Cook & the EEB. The one performance we were privileged to see was fabulous, thank you, boys! Loved Cook “borrowing” a hat from the girl in the audience. Awwwwwwwww. He sounded really good, I thought. Yes, the presentation of the platinum record thing was just…weird. WTF? David will probably save that as a WTF moment eh? And he didn’t even create it!

I have to say that the Dick Clark show looked better and it looked pretty bad to me. Ryan was just lovely, as always, though. I just love him. But I don’t really like Taylor Swift that much, the Pussycat Dolls are a friggin’ JOKE, and the Jonas Brothers sing about as well as Miley F-ing Cyrus. Plus they have scary hair, eyebrows, and pants.

I would like to say that having listened to country music for about the past 20 or so years, until 2008 A.C. (After Cook), that Taylor Swift is a breath of fresh air. Her songwriting is just a little too sophmoric for me, although the songs are catchy (OBviously!), she is beautiful, and she has a pleasant voice. Haven’t bought anything by her and don’t plan to though. She’s about 1,287X better than F-ing Cyrus though.

ETA: Was that Kristen, the video goddess, whom I saw in the audience? LOL!

Oh HAPPY NEW YEAR, mj buds! And mj, of course. Looking forward to 2009 with you all! :drunk_tb:

  • ohnonotagain

DC-the things we do for our love of you.. Most disgusting show I have seen, that host was awful (the one with glasses did an OK job). Evil was cheesy and self promoting and boring, fake jump.
Daughtry was bad, sorry for him, he is good. DC saved the day, but we should have seen ” Declaration”. I felt sorry for him in the presentation, how awkward, he always does a good job. I still think he is the best Idol we have ever had. Go DC for 2009 and the next plat. song and album. Shame on you Fox for doing a crappy show except for DC.

  • ShariG

I agree with all of the previous posters, so probably don’t have anything much to add. I was so thrilled to see David Cook that I overlooked how horrible the entire rest of the show was, but my family didn’t miss it. One son said, “So let me see David Cook performed with Robbie Knievel and some ventriloquist? What’s with that? Good thing he can sing.” I tried to point out that Daughtry and Scott Weiland also performed, but he only watched from David forward so missed the other passable acts.

However, that being said, David Cook rocked. He is so cute and the entire band was awesome. We turned on Ryan right after the ventriloquist started to sing and never looked back. Glad I didn’t miss anything. Loved the picture on the platinum plaque. What a hottie!

  • Lisa

DC was the only reason to watch that mess last night, he was good! It was one mess after the other. Who was the host? He kept talking to people off screen & he does not have Seascrest’s skills to take the audience along with him for that chat.

Why did Kneival jump through a Bic lighter? I only saw a few flames no volcano, cameraman sucked.
I felt bad for DC getting his plaque during all this mess, it was extremely awkward. The best thing Fox could have done would have been to present DC with his plat’s for TOML & Album, plus Gold for LO during his AI upcoming performance. Now that would be a showstopper.

DC was the only reason to watch the whole POS show that was on last night & I agree with everyone else who says “the things we do for that boy”. I could have spent the whole hour instead ramming toothpicks under my fingernails.

  • jumpstart

That was absolutely horrible. It was, by far, the worst show (of any kind) that I have ever seen. And that’s saying a lot. FOX should be ashamed of themselves for putting that dreck together and having the audacity to air it. I thought they were trying to increase their ratings … not send peeps screaming and running for cover. :flush_tb:

  • luckeee55

As everyone has already stated, horrible show and I don’t think anyone came off particularly well but that is because of production, not the performers.

Cookie, would it have killed you to be gracious and thank your fans?

  • IGetCranked

I have to say I was really dissapointed in that platinum presentation. It didn’t fit with the show and he really didn’t seem that excited about it. I wonder why they didn’t wait for AI to do that?

  • hoodathunk

Hang tight, I believe they will be able to award a platinum album to Cookie on an American Idol show this season.

Y’all are right the presentation was awkward, but “Light On” was the best performance of the song I have seen so far. I’m a casual fan, but I really like that song.

  • cookcricket

Cookie, would it have killed you to be gracious and thank your fans?

Yes, I’ll probably defend DC to my dieing day, but I felt as if the presenter just set the whole thing up to be awkward and DC was taken off guard. As a fan I myself wondered what this “surprise” was since I already knew he had achieved platinum for TOML and the presenter made it sound like something unknown to
DC. I just truly think he was completely caught off guard and didn’t respond as he truly would have liked to. JMO.

  • caringgirl

I too think cook was caught off guard, and didnt know exactly what to say at that moment. There really isnt a doubt in my mind that he is appreciative of his fans. Hes shown it too much in the past.

  • gingerly

I just have two words to say…faux network.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Why the hell did I waste DVR space for this? This was possibly the lamest NYE show ever. Thanks for suffering through it, MJ. At least DC and the EEB looked and sounded great!

  • itsalleternal

Can DVR space be deleted or overwritten?

  • Lisa

I did not know where else to put this so here goes.

We get Knieval jumpin a Bic lighter while “elsewhere” in Las Vegas this happened???? Now THIS is a motorcycle stunt!

    http://www.grindtv.com/video/moto/robbie_maddison_nails_it_jumps_120ft_to_top_of_arc_de_triomphe_1/

Of course that cameraman nailed it. Bottom line here is epic Fox Fail.

  • cheese

Thanks for the video, mj. I didn’t even consider watching or recording that POS when I saw they were going to feature Robbie Knievel. Maybe I would have been interested in 1979 when I had an awesome Evil Knievel bicycle and thought that stuff was cool, lol.

I haven’t seen the presentation of the platinum record, but I can say as a David fan that I’m not looking for him to thank me for buying his rainbow song and voting for him at every turn. At some point, I hope he gets to be just be a normal artist with normal expectations as far as the fan interaction goes.

  • CookieLove1983

I agree that the presentation was awkwatd. I was a little drunk while watching it though. The guy presenting it was stupid. I mean seriously David knows TOML went platinum. David Cook the Record will be next. The performance was really good.
On Daughtry, I am a fan of his but could they not record another performance and i really didn’ t like this song on acoustic guitar. Maybe its me.

  • SashaB

As far as I know, this debacle of a show was not an awards show. Did y’all watch another show? I thought it was a NYE show where some guy jumped a volcano. Was Dave given a grammy or a AMA? No. He was presented with a platinum plaque in the stands with his brother seated next to him. Did you see the girls who brought the plaque? That green dress looked like a retread of a bridesmaid dress. Shudder. DC wasn’t even dressed for it because he was noticeably without guyliner. I think it’s safe to say that DC would be wearing guyliner to a big event. He had guyliner on at the Jet segment.

But seriously, how many times does David Cook have to thank his fans? Should he thank fans every time he appears on national tv? “I’d just like to take a moment to thank my fans for allowing me to be on this show. ” I think that’ll get old after a while. Oh, there goes David, thanking us again. Since we’re critiquing his acceptance speech, boy his mom and dad should be awfully upset that they weren’t thanked. How ’bout Mrs. Gentry? Fuller and RCA must be so peeved. The expectations on this guy are oftentimes too much. Mileage.

I thought David and his band were great. FOX, not so much. I mean, could the crowd shots have been any more lame or rudimentary? Isn’t there a dress code for clubs in Vegas? Usually for pretaped segments, they’ll have shots of people in club wear. That was not the case last night.

  • Michelle

LOL, thank God I was out and DVR’d this show, so I could fast forward through all the crappy parts (meaning, any non-musical part of the show.) Jeez! Next time at least pay to fly Cat Deeley out to Times Square as a correspondent, Fox. And the editing and audience shots etc. were pretty lame considering most of the show was pretaped!

Unsurprisingly, DC was the bright spot of the show. I’m almost embarrassed that he had to be on this one though. I squeed a bit when the presenter mentioned a platinum *album* (I mean, I know I haven’t been online much the past few days but wow for a second I thought…) then I realized it was for ToML. (still all good though, go magic rainbow :)

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

The expectations on this guy are oftentimes too much. Mileage.

Well, his reaction was super awkward. His response “I want more of those” even took David himself aback, as he quickly amended his statement with “but I’m happy with this.”

It wasn’t one of the better Cookie moments. And as some folks have said, it’s a good thing not many people were watching. lol.

But on the other hand, in the grand scheme of things, it’s really not a big deal. One can’t expect to be perfect at all times, especially those times when a camera is stuck in your face, and you’re expected to react on the spot.

  • forlife

I thought this show was lame. I love Daughtry, but it was an old clip from last April. And he is really great live. This wasn’t his best performance of the Revolution performances that night. And I have to agree with some others that Cook seemed like he was expecting that plaque. It came across a bit arrogant to say he wanted more. Sometimes it is better to keep those thoughts to your self. lol I turned to the Times Square special. Everything about this one was a hot mess. One upside is that hardly anyone but the diehard fans saw it. :)

  • movin2thabeet

Just wanted to add my voice to those who cringed at having to watch this. That show was one huge mess, except for David. The host was horrible, the editing bad – pretty much across the board a cheap, amateurish production. I wonder if they chose that Daughtry performance for its bargain price? Certainly would have been better to just show both of DC’s songs. Oh, I could critique the whole thing, but why waste any more valuable time on it. Here’s hoping David got a good laugh at this, and can avoid doing anything this badly produced in the future.

  • SashaB

Oh, I’m not disputing that that presentation segment was just all kinds of awkward. I cringed throughout the whole thing. WTH was up with the host wearing a bubble ski parka when everyone else was wearing t-shirts or long sleeved shirts? Talk about dissonance in costumes and set up. Cook was in a grey shirt, there were people in shorts, show girls in mismatched bridesmaids gowns. So when bubble host then states that Cook’s getting a surprise platinum album, oops, I was thinking what the heck? Random and awkward were what came to mind. Heh. I thought it was all kinds of lame.

“Cookie, would it have killed you to be gracious and thank your fans?”

^^ I took exception to that comment or complaint. I don’t think given that context, Dave needed to thank anyone let alone his fans. I’m sure he was wondering how the heck he got stuck there rather than hanging out with his buddies or GF on New Year’s Eve. I hope he was able to leave and head to a real NYE party.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure he was wondering how the heck he got stuck there rather than hanging out with his buddies or GF on New Yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Eve. I hope he was able to leave and head to a real NYE party.

Luckily, it was taped on the 30th, and Cook didn’t have to sacrifice his NYE at all. :) .

And I agree, Cook has thanked his fans plenty in other places and contexts. I think he’s got that part covered.

  • jpfan

Getting a platinum record isn’t an actual award but it’s standard practice (not to mention good business) to thank the fans. Country stars are great at this but even rappers do it. Of course, this was obviously a botched surprise so no big deal.

If Cook is wondering “how he got stuck there” he should ask 19M why such a lousy gig. I’m sure there about 50,000 struggling rockers who’d be perfectly happy to do if he’d prefer to hang with his pals. I really can’t muster much pity for Cook in having to do it. It’s still a national TV show. And of course, it didn’t spoil his New Year’s Eve in the slightest. Although anybody who actually watched the whole crapfest last night might have their night spoiled a tad..

  • jan

I wonder if David knew the plaque was coming or if it was a surprise to him.

As I watched and heard the host say platinum album, I thought oh no, they are giving him a plaque for shipping platinum. Why couldn’t they wait for him to sell platinum. Why now? And why this guy presenting it?

Then I saw that it was for TOML and a little of my sense of panic went away.

So I do wonder was David surprised? And if he was, what was going through his mind?

  • smartcookie

The presentation of the plaque didn’t seem to be filmed at the same time as the song. He was wearing a different outfit, for one. I realize that Fox was throwing “live” all over the place for things that were not, in fact, live, but for some reason I assumed the performance was taped on the 30th and the ridiculous plaque presentation was live on the 31st. Maybe I think that because Spike Feresten was wearing the huge winter coat, and if they were taping ahead of time and got to choose where and when they were going to do it, I would hope they would find a warmer place to do it. And maybe even retape when the host screwed up and said it was a platinum album instead of a platinum single or record. Like, let’s try that again, and Spike, get the intro right, while, David, look more excited and leer down the girls’ cleavage this time, okay? This is Vegas, baby.

Eh. Who knows? Since it also looked as if they were spending pennies (instead of dimes) to do the whole thing, maybe they didn’t want to retape anything. The whole thing was terrible.

I thought Cook was trying to be funny with the “many of first” or whatever the comment was, and it went over like a lead balloon because Feresten seemed to have no facility whatsoever for actually acting, like, say a HOST might want to act.

  • FolkFan

First, thanks, MJ, for the heads-up about the suckitude of the show. I cheerfully fastforwarded through everything other than DC and Daughtry.

The platinum presentation was awkward, but honestly, I don’t think that I would have thought too much about it but for the comments here. The phrasing of it was odd—it made it sound like he was getting the platinum for the “album,” which would have been a huge surprise to him (and, you know, the rest of us), but then it turned out to be for Magic Rainbow, which I’m sure he knew was platinum, but he probably was not expecting to get his plaque awarded publicly. So, he kind of had a double surprise, “What are they doing? What, the album has been certified platinum? Oh, okay, it’s for Magic Rainbow. Now, I’m with the program.” But really? My initial reactions were a lot less complex: huh, a little awkward, pretty plaque, Andrew looks a bit bored, why didn’t they immediately go to commercial.

Ah, well. He and the band sounded great. I don’t like the new pendant.

Oh, and reports are that ESPN used Heroes in their football bowl preview this morning.

  • SashaB

Heh, I hardly think anyone is asking for pity for Cook. No pity fest required. That NYE show was all kinds of lame with the weird comic bits and impersonators segment, but that’s the fault of the producers and director. Can hardly blame Daughtry, Cook or Skynard for the show’s decision to highlight the jumping stunts of Robbie Knievel. The presenter was lame and the set up was lame. But then again, given how much press Knievel got, I guess he has fans. Who knew?

I also hardly think that Fuller or 19Alphabet have done anything that warrants any tomatoes being thrown at them. It’s not like being booked on one of the major four TV networks on New Year’s Eve was a bad thing. I had no complaints with the venue or performance. It not like the Jet or the Mirage were like a coffee house event in Pennsylvania. I’ll take a broadcast live performance for more ears and eyes to hear his band perform LO any day. That was the focus for me, not a brief segment presenting a plaque. I’m sure when DCTR hits platinum there will be other opportunities.

As for ratings for last night’s NYE show: Fox came in third. But I don’t know if Letterman was a repeat, heh.

From 11:30 p.m. to 1:15 a.m., ABC, Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest averaged an 8.5 household rating in preliminary numbers put out Thursday afternoon. NBC and Carson Daly scored a 5.0 rating from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Fox’s bash, from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., put up a 3.4 rating. On CBS, David Letterman scored a 2.5.

    http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2009/01/abc-wins-new-ye.html

  • jan

Hah, I tuned into Letterman while ignoring the crappy bits on FOX. What did he have? And interview with a woman who was bit by a rabid FOX and ran with it attached to her arm. She threw it in the trunk of her car and drove herself to the hospital. Then the FOX bit the animal control person in the nose when they opened the trunk. It was very entertaining. Maybe FOX should book her for next New Years Eve.

  • Trina

I’m almost positive the platinum presentation was live but I don’t think his NYE was sacrificed. From various things I heard he had friends in Vegas with him, he had his band there, yesterday he was seen shopping and out and about. I’m doubting he had to sit through that mess all night, they probably just wanted him there long enough for the presentation.

  • sunchick

Oh, man, Fox, NOW do you realize it takes a bit more planning to put together a “live” NYE broadcast? Too funny. Cook sounded great and looked schmexy. The whole of it, though, was woefully underproduced. And, I was thinking, what a shame… With that line up, they could have had, say, Cook, Daughtry, and Weiland perform an acoustic version of Plush, sharing the vocals. And I’d be begging someone for an MP3. But nooo….cheap bastards.

TOML has been platinum for what? Like two months? I think he was at a loss for words at the ridic OTT pretending that this is all new to him. It was kind of funny, the way the announcer phrased it, like, wowee, we’ve got this big surprise, and then….it wasn’t a surprise. Because Cook already knew weeks ago. It would be like someone saying…hey, I have this awesome Lost spoiler! About the island’s location! You aren’t going to believe it! And you kind of know what they are going to say, but still you think, this person couldn’t possibly be talking about the island moving in the finale, right? It sounds like more than that. ANd you get kind of psyched thinking it’s a real spoiler and then they say…..”Ben moved the island with a big wooden wheel!” “Gee, thanks, but I knew that LAST YEAR. Do you know some more info?” “Um, no, but isn’t that cool?” “Um….if you say so.” It was kind of like that. Which wasn’t the reaction they were going for, so the announcer guy kept trying to get a big reaction out of him and….and there’s your awkward.

  • Michelle

PROPS to sunchick for blending: 1) a Lost reference, 2) a rant against Fox, and 3) David Cook :D
