David Cook performed his single “Come Back to Me” on last night’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Check out the video after the jump…

  • gingerly

Great performance. Sucky audio quality. Thudworthy video. All the boys in the band got some face time for once.

  • Jolene

    Thanks for posting this, MJ!
Yesterday someone said David performed both CBTM and BBS, any word on if BBS might get posted online somewhere?

  • EmmaJK

David looked and sounded great last night. Yeah, the band was mixed a little too high, or Dave’s mic was too low, but it seemed to get better as the song went on. I just love his growly take on CBTM. The little interview at the end was cute, too. Jimmy Fallon is a fan – who knew! (And how nice of him to acknowledge the band; they seemed a little surprised).

Did I mention that David looked great? Really nice shirt. Mmmm.

ETA: The Amazing Kreskin is still around? He was doing late night talk shows when I was a kid.

  • weareallinnocent

Thanks, mj! I tried to stay awake, but yeah, crashed about 10 minutes before Cook came on. :-) Thank goodness you’re on it!

Another great Cookie performance. Fallon: “Great band!” LOL

  • dcisluv

I kinda think Dave is sick. He usually doesn’t lean on the band for vocals. It seemed like his voice wasn’t 100% and he seemed tired. The boy needs a vacation.

    They sounded great though.

I saw Fallon point out, “Great band!” That was cool.

  • gingerly

He wasn’t leaning on the band for vocals. They were singing harmony as they always do. I don’t understand that comment.

  • tierbee

I kinda think Dave is sick. He usually doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t lean on the band for vocals.

I don’t think he’s sick (haven’t heard anything about it from people who went to his recent shows) BUT he’s had shows constantly lately so I’d imagine any way to save his voice is a good thing. I know he had Idol last week and shows Fri/Sat/Sun… Jimmy Fallon Monday… then shows tonight, tomorrow, Thursday, Saturday (Yay, I’ll be there!) and Sunday. I’d imagine anything that can help save the voice… is good! I think Andy/Kyle have been doing more of the backup vocals on that song for a while now, though admittedly I haven’t had the time or energy to watch a lot of the YouTube stuff. It was like that on Ellen too, though, if I recall.

I loved when Fallon said the band was great… they really are, glad to hear when they are appreciated. Hehe, he also said David was a stud, didn’t he?

  • tierbee

They were singing harmony as they always do.

The one part where Kyle & Andy’s vocals really stand out… on the album, David does his own backing vocals but he can’t sing that and go into the verse live so he needs a little help from his friends :) . Maybe that’s the part that dcisluv meant?

  • gingerly

I guess maybe. One line isn’t leaning. Maybe you don’t hear the backup singing so much on tour videos because of venue acoustics, but they were even more prominent on the Ellen show. And as you mention, it’s a bit dificult to do your backup vocals live.

Anyhow I love them singing together. That’s what bands do and they sound great.

  • Thea

David is looking great these days- like the hair, he’s lost some weight, the shirt tonight looked good, the smile (although that has always been there)

  • KrisAllen1

I love his new blonde highlights.I love his new song.I just love me some Cookie.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

    Thanks for posting that MJ!

  • Keel

Wow, he sounded great last night. I agree that the mix had his voice too low at the start but they seemed to fix it as they went along. The band vocals have been that way for a while now. Andy and Kyle have to do quite a bit of singing of the chrorus because of the overlapping vocals. Cook can’t very well sing over himself.

Heh. At first I thought Kyle was borrowing Cook’s clothes. That plaid short sleeve shirt looked really familiar.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

At first I thought Kyle was borrowing Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s clothes. That plaid short sleeve shirt looked really familiar.

Come to think of it, it does. :laugh_tb:

Nice to see the band getting some face time too. Yep, the sound mix did sound a bit off but nice performance though.

  • gingerly

I just hope Kyle doesn’t return the favor with some of his tank tops. I prefer the arm porn with a bit left to the imagination.

  • dcisluv

Oy. I didn’t mean to insult David. I adore David and everything he does. I just meant you don’t usually hear Andy and Kyle as much as you do in this latest performance. David’s voice didn’t seem to be at 100%. I thought he might have been sick. It was still a great performance. Sheesh.

  • gingerly

dcisluv, I don’t think you insulted David. I was truly baffled by what you said bcause the backup is where IMO it should be. I’ve said before that I’d like to hear more of the harmonies in his youtube videos. I have said before that I think they mic Andy and Kyle (the primary backup singers) too softly. I think the best live version I’ve heard of this song was on the Ellen show and they are even louder there. Just think of The Beatles without the harmonies…

Please rest assured that because I ask questions about what you said doesn’t mean I’m jumping all over people.

  • Layla

That was awesome! I love this song live but don’t have it on my ipod. His voice LIVE is just incredible.

No that his reign is over, I hope that the introduction of the American Idol title would be dropped.

  • cookmerized

What a beautiful sight for my tired, grumpy, end of long weekend eyes. I think they broke the ai champion mold after cook was born. I just love him.

  • wellhesback

David Cook is beautiful and one of a kind. And I hope his band continues to get the props they deserve.
I’m a proud DC/band fan, but yeah, unfortunately there are some really scary DC fans out there. Me, I think everyone has a right to their own opinions about music. I just hope people give Cookie a fair chance and listen to his.

  • noctem seizure

It’s interesting– when I watched the first youtube of this, I thought he sounded like ass. But, now that I watched it off of my DVR in HD and with speakers, he didn’t sound that bad at all.

However, the fact that the performance produced minimal Itunes response, considering Fallon’s demo, doesn’t surprise me. For the time being at least, CBTM is still officially “the single”, so they have to play it. Still, taking into account Fallon’s prime audience, I’d be curious what kind of bump would have been produced if they had hit the stage their first televised performance of Barbasol.

Where were you last year? I was stressing out!

Oh Cook … you still got it. :laugh_tb:

  • leome

Yeah, it’s nice that Jimmy mentioned the band. I really can’t wait for them to name the band… come on boys, I’m curious.
Pretty nice performance, but yeah, the sound was a bit low. Gotta like Ellen’s more.

However, the fact that the performance produced minimal Itunes response, considering Fallonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s demo, doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t surprise me.

Man, I love your posts. But what kind of response do you expect? Both Come Back To Me and Permanent have gone up since his performance. Given that both were going down, I think that’s not a bad thing. These shows don’t get music to the #1 spot on Itunes or anything like that.

Suenigma, thanks for the link. I love the fact he designed the Permanent cover. First cause I think it’s pretty good, second cause it’s neat he was involved with it.

  • daenarys

That Popwrap interview is the cutest thing! Thanks for the warning, not that it helped LOL!

I love this band. I mean, I love David Cook, but the fact that he put together such a hot band with great individual talents AND great vocalists just kind of multiplied the flove into infinity.

Andy and Kyle riffing on a Ryan Star song after a show.

They keep changing up Come Back To Me, tweaking it up (more vocals here, changing notes there, stronger bass etc) from a straightforward Europop-rock track on the record into a gruff yearning rock ballad.

This band is so good, they make every song sound better live. I really really want that live CD (I’ll try not to mind if they include a DVD. Hee.)

On a shallow note (since the rest of this post is so deeeeep LOL), I tried someone’s advice to watch this performance with the sound switched off. Let’s just say that I’m addicted now. Must. Stop. Help.

  • BootStar

For once, I watched a performance in HD BEFORE watching it here, and it was the best I think David has ever sounded.

The reality is, however, that it’s not a terribly exciting song, and a lot of what makes it much of anything are the harmonies, which obviously would have to be sung by somebody other than David during a live performance. I think he intentionally starts the song softly so he has something to build to, but if you’re not listening through a good sound system, it could seem like his voice was kind of lost.

Floved the glory note at the end. It really amazes me what he can do with a semi-shitty song. That, my friends, is talent! And seriously LOL’ed at the exchange with Kreskin:

“I could have told you you were going to win.”

“Where were you last year? I was stressing out?”

  • Aileen

However, the fact that the performance produced minimal Itunes response, considering Fallonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s demo, doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t surprise me.

Considering that Jimmy Fallon’s audience is only about 2 million, it’s unlikely to show a significant iTunes response for any performer that will be visible on iTunes, especially if the song is in the top 100. Now, performing in front of AI’s 30 million people, that, usually shows a very visible iTunes response.

Instead of sliding to pre AI rankings of 109 or so, CBTM was at 90 this morning, and is currently at 88. So, not falling further and moving up a bit is the kind of bump you get from that size audience.

  • Keel

Hah. Unlike noctem, I actually saw/heard this performance first off my DVR. And I thought he sounded fantastic. Frankly, I was kind of going WTF? at all the comments (here and at Rickey’s) about Cook sounding off because I just wasn’t hearing it, but I guess the youtube videos emphasized the sound mix being off at the start (though I still didn’t think he was off pitch in the least, just that he was mic’d too softly). Anyway, the harmonies with the band sounded great I thought. And the ending is sooooo much better than on the studio version. They’ve really tweaked it for a better live experience. So glad that Jimmy gave props to the band — because they are making this song a band song now, rather than just a Cook solo. Cool beans!

(Geezus — what is up with my happy mood? The spirit of kimberann has taken over. Where is she anyway?)

  • noctem seizure

Man, I love your posts. But what kind of response do you expect? Both Come Back To Me and Permanent have gone up since his performance. Well, ok then. I’m not sure how to read the tone of this post and one of the ones below. Maybe I’m misreading them, but in general, a hearty affirmative to wellhesback. There are indeed some very scary fans out there. In fact, if you frighten easily, I’d stay clear of any of the fan boards. I now do.

With respect to what I said about Fallon’s demo, all I meant is that it strikes me that the 12:30 PM audience/ and in particular a Jimmy Fallon audience, would lean 20s and male. So, they may have been more enthused by Barbasol than CBTM.

  • kimberann

So wonderful to see my angel singing. It’s nice to see CBTM getting some promo finally. I hope it helps push this song up the charts.

  • uncgirl

I keep listening to these David Cook videos thinking one day I’ll be able to hear what you all do, but I can never make it through a whole song. I find his music somewhat boring. I don’t even like his voice.

  • GeminiDolly

I also still dont get whats so great about David Cook. I dont even think hes the best rocker this show has had. But thats just me. Hows his album doing?

Well, ok then. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure how to read the tone of this post and one of the ones below. Maybe Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m misreading them,

Eh, I was being honest about loving your posts. There wasn’t a tone there. What I was questioning is what you meant by minimal response. Being a show with such low audience impressions, I think it’s good the song (and not just CBTM but also Permanent, and maybe LO, but I wasn’t paying attention to that one) went up.
Yeah, of course we can ask “what if it was bar-ba-sol?”. Yeah, sure. But we won’t get an answer to it. Kinda, what’s the point? What we know is that there’s a part of the audience who liked it, or they wouldn’t have gone to Itunes to buy it.
It’s more important for CBTM to get those sales, help it stay in the itunes top 100, maybe help it with its placement in the hot100. For BBS, that’s just irrelevant.

He sells them out of the back of his Pinto. A few more dozen and he should be able to pay off that Pinto any day now.

LMAO! Like I said… I love your posts.

It’s all subjective really. Your boring is my exciting. I think his voice is beautiful and supple, whereas I find Adam’s voice affected and cold. Although Adam does seem like a great guy too.

I must say that once in awhile I would like to see David sing something less intense – a bit more fun. He always sounded so great in the cheesy group songs on Idol. Those songs showed of his vocal versatility.

    Hows his album doing?

It’s doing great – closing in on 1.2 million sold, and I think that he may turn out to have reached platinum in less time than Kelly Clarkson (3 months). Quite an achievement in this economy.

‘David Cook’ is the best-selling album by a new artist this chart year by a significant margin. It was, at last tally, the 7th best-selling album of the chart year overall, and is one of only 8 albums to sell 1 million units chart year-to-date. (per LM on DCO).

I’d say sales are not too shabby.

Another fabulous performance by the amazing Mr. Cook. He is performing another sold out show tonight. If you think he might be a bit tired, it is perhaps because the man hasn’t stopped since the day he walked on the Idol stage. If he isn’t performing, touring, or doing interviews, he is busy meeting fans and doing things for charity. Also, catch him on VH1 this Saturday when they will be doing an interview with David for the Top 20 Countdown. He is my one and only American Idol! But congrats to Kris and Adam as well! David is doing so much that, I only have time to follow one Idol! But, I wish this year’s group great success as well.

Maybe a Lexus now, but Mr. Cook used to drive a beat-up Jeep or some such according to an old interview. One of the benefits of being The American Idol.

Tess – Sorry if I contributed to the snarkiness. No harm intended.

Can I just say how frustrating it was to read this, and not be able to see the video because I was at work? Finally watched it, and, um, yep. I just love that he is perusing (tm David Cook) home decorating sites in his spare time. He’s so cute.

  • Laurie

uncgirl – at first I couldn’t relate to your comment and I was going to try and convince you what was so amazing about David Cook’s voice, but then I realized, that is exactly how I felt this year about Adam Lambert’s voice. I just didn’t get it, but many, many people do, and they feel about Adam what I feel about David. That is what is so great about this show. I must say though, that I do enjoy Adam’s personality. He seems very outgoing and sweet.

  • lovegoodmusic

This was a very nice performance, Cook’s vocals were spot on and he looked really good. It’s been a great year to be a David Cook fan and I look forward to his musical journey for years to come.

Thank you for posting this MJ

  • maturin

That was an extra sweet version of that song. The extra layers of voices and guitars mean I like the live band version super much better then the studio version. Just growing on me as a lovable love song.

  • golcook

I’m extremely happy of how the band has connected with the song, at first CBTM was one of the not-so-good live songs, but it sounded awesome here and in the last live performances (ellen, manila, etc).

And I loved the “great band” comment, because soon they will be a band and not just David Cook.

    Any band names suggestions?

maturin: meekly: You’re right, I just mean, every time I hear David Cook is always the best time!

  • May

Hello glory note!! I love how the song escalates at the very end and then gets quiet. It also sounds much better when you can clearly hear Andy and Kyle harmonizing, although I do think they could have turned up Cook’s mike a bit in the beginning. I must say, Cook has such amazing stage presence even when he is just standing still. Not sure how he does it.

  • oceana

I must say that once in awhile I would like to see David sing something less intense – a bit more fun.

kiss on the neck – needs to be put out and at least put on itunes. It’s a bonus song. David and Neal wrote it. Fun and upbeat. They perform it on the tour almost every night so they must like it too. They probably can’t pick the singles.

I like I Did It For You better than CBTM, it’s a similar type song but David had a hand in writing it, and I think it has a more catchy beat.

Dude, I said the same kind of thing after the Ellen appearance. It’s like a totally new song for me all of a sudden. I used to laugh my ass off thinking about RS comparing this song to U2, but now I finally kind of hear it. Come Back To Me on steroids FTW. For me, for you, for me, the latest interpretation of the song goes something like…

” So, yeah, go on now, go and find yourself…I know you’ll be back. I mean, really, I’m totally fine with it. Oh, and don’t think that I don’t know that you’re totally checking out the gun show while I’m rocking this ginormous new axe and singing with this growly manly tone. I hear ya. Although angsty Dave is my favorite incarnation, the fun stuff like the Sharp Dressed Man duet with ZZ Top or his band’s cover of Hot 4 Teacher is a nice change of pace. Here’s a good concert vid that gives you the best of both Daves…

I also still dont get whats so great about David Cook.

Honestly, if you didn’t get it after Permanent last Tuesday, an epiphany probably won’t be forthcoming. Which is cool, nobody can possibly be everybody’s cuppa. I don’t get Carrie and she’s a megastar. I don’t know about the best rocker, because really, defining what constitues a “rocker” is so subjective, but I personally think he’s the best songwriter/lyricist to come out of AI and Permanent is the finest piece written by an AI alum. Mileage, et all.

However, he didn’t appear and I was mad. Now I’m madder because I missed it. But thanks to MJ, I got my Cookie fix after all. I hate missing any opportunity to see my Cookie. Thanks goodness for this blog and youtube. I’m a happy woman now. :clap_tb:

Fantastic new David Cook interview with Popwrap:

Warning: the overt beauty and charm may not be suitable for some viewers.

OMG, the warning didn’t help!!!! I THINK I PASSED OUT watching this interview. I completely didn’t hear a word he was saying, I had to go back and watch it over again just to hear the video. LOL

So another season of Idol has come and gone. I watched it and at times even enjoyed it. But it just wasn’t the same. It came down to I didn’t really care who won. Still I find myself checking this site everyday looking for … guess what? Not news about Adam or Kris but any little tidbit or video featuring my favorite Idol of all – DC. Keep it coming folks! You make my day.

David Cook will be on vh-1 top 20 countdown this Saturday. I hope they interview the whole band this time. That would be so cool. I really want to hear Neal speak. I love what David said about him recently, he’s a riddle inside an enigma inside a quagmire etc. Wish I had the exact words.
