That new iTunes app featuring David Cook’s single, “Light On”, that I blogged about a few days ago is now available on iTunes.

Here’s how you find it: This link will take you to the iTunes front page. Click on “App store – New!” underneath “iTunes STORE” on the left. Once you get to the app store, click on “Music” underneath “Categories” on the left. You’ll see the app on the front page.

You can also get to it from your device–which by the way, needs to be 2nd generation in order for the app to work. My iPod touch doesn’t qualify. And I swear, even though I said the app was kind of pointless, I probably would have downloaded it anyway. Heh. Here’s some more information about the “Light On” app from the press release:

The interactive “Light On” App turns an iPhone or iPod touch into a “virtual” lighter while playing Cook’s single “Light On.” Using the iPhone’s unique technology, fans simply “flick” the iPhone or iPod touch and the flame goes out while the song fades out. The application also provides links to the iTunes Store to listen and buy Cook’s new hit single or pre-order his upcoming album. Additionally the application allows the user to send a message to a friend and links directly to DavidCookOfficial.com, where users can connect with each other.

The application appears to be a social networking device, as well as a fun little gadget. David isn’t alone. Pink, who just released a new album, also has an iTunes app for sale.

For one-stop shopping for all of David Cook’s iTunes music, click this link. You can download his singles, “Time of My Life” and “Light On” or pre-order his album, David Cook, due to drop November 18. A bonus track, “My Last Request,” is available with pre-orders only.

One last item here. David will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this Saturday. It’s the last SNL before the presidential election on Tuesday, and it promises to be a huge show. Ben Affleck is hosting, and rumors abound that democratic candidate, Barack Obama, will be making an appearance.

Saturday will be the first television appearance for David and his newly-formed band. On Tuesday, they performed a dry-run impromptu gig at the Viper Room in LA. This was confirmed by keyboard/guitarist Andy Skib’s father on one of the fan boards. No word on how it went, but needless to say, this Saturday is going to be a major debut. Good luck to David and his band!

ETA: The second dry run will be when David and his band performs on the Wal-Mart soundcheck. You can watch that on Saturday before SNL.

I think that I’d manage to resist the temptation to get the app, but honestly, I can’t promise that, if I had a touch or iphone, that I wouldn’t succumb. Sometimes, you just want a silly toy to play with, you know?

Did you see the nice post that Ken Barnes did about DC? Reason #23 why you gotta like David Cook: he’s so witty and well-spoken.

  • ShariG

Thank you for the information, MJ. I love the song, Light On, and am very excited about SNL this Saturday. I have an I Touch and if this application works on it, I am going to buy it for sure. I will do all I can to support David Cook. I love the guy and really want him to succeed. It is so sad that there are still these months later so many Archuleta fans still hoping that he fails. I don’t quite get it. I read the comments on the link you provided and they make me sad. I don’t think it has a thing to do with his hair or his song or even the way he choses to express himself in interview. Apparently he should have said he wanted to make a fluff album that is meaningless in the music world. I honestly think it is still all about the fact that he beat David A. on AI and for that he apparently cannot be forgiven. It is really getting old though. It was simply time for a rocker to win and David Cook was appealing and talented and was able to connect with a whole group of people who had kind of given up on the show because our kind of music did not appear to be valued. I am thrilled that David Cook has the backing of people of the stature of Chris Cornell and Raine Maida in the rock community. I am thrilled that Rolling Stone has recognized him and are giving him a chance to prove himself. These are all great signs for the future. Plus, the band members he has assembled are not only talented musicians and composers, many are friends who will be loyal to him and support him. He is one smart Cookie.

^^^ I’m really not interested in discussing Archie’s fans in this thread.

Believe me, there are Cook fans hoping that Archie fails too. Every single fan group has its members that thrive on continuing the Idol competition long after the contest is done, and who get off on fan wars and trolling. I would not single out a particular fan group in that regard.

So really, what is there to discuss? Your words only fan the fanwar flames, and I won’t have any of that here on my blog. OK? So let’s get this thread back on subject, which is DAVID COOK.

    Thank you.

  • lefty

I think it’s a clever little app that is meant to be just that – nothing less, nothing more – and while I don’t plan to buy it, I have bought LO. The song didn’t appeal much to me at first and I bought it simply to support Cook; however, I found myself belting it out in the car with my two kids yesterday. I guess that means it’s grown on this family of Archie fans. :smile_wp:

I’m looking forward to the SNL appearance and I have no doubt that Cook will be awesome. Good luck to DC!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I think it’s a clever little app that is meant to be just that – nothing less, nothing more

And it only works on 2nd gen devices, which means any iPods bought before September will not run the app. It’s hardly a ploy to sell more singles. I think it was a PR tool–another way to get people talking about David before his album is released.

  • mac

I just downloaded the app. Here is what it does:

It first comes up with a screen promoting the album release on Nov. 18th.
Then the lighter comes up. It has a flick switch to turn the flame on and off. On the right bottom is a little menu with the following items:

“Pause” – stops the song playing, but keeps the lighter on.
“Buy” – which takes you to the iTunes store. It seems to have taken me to the New Releases section of the store. Not sure why it didn’t take me directly to his album on iTunes.
“Website” – which takes you to the official website. I wasn’t able to get on the website though because I think the site is down?
“Share” – which takes you to email. It has the email title then filled in with “Light On” by David Cook and then text filled into the message basically saying you can get the new song or the app.
“About” – which has all the info about the song. Who it is produced by, written by, musicians etc.

That’s it! So I guess social networking in this case is just email or going to the official cook site to chat with others.

  • lefty

It sounds like this is just the next little fun fad for people to squander a bit of money on (and don’t we all fall prey to a fun fad every now and then?). David just happens to be one of the first artists out there that they’re trying it with. And good for him, because as you just said, MJ, it’s creating some nice buzz. I’m sure we’ll start seeing this kind of thing more in the next few months, and at some point I’m sure I’ll end up buying one of them.

  • Trina

I downloaded it to my iPhone a little while ago. It’s so cute. Random fact I did not know – Rob Cavallo plays piano on LO. I think I’ll sit in front of the TV Saturday night waving around the little flame LOL

Also on Saturday is the Walmart Soundcheck!

  • sma11ie

Thanks for the synopsis, mac. It does seem a silly little app, haha, but the concept is not bad.

  • mac

I think Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll sit in front of the TV Saturday night waving around the little flame

Good idea Trina! Me too. I’ll sit in my dark den with the flame going swaying from side to side while I’m watching. OK, that alone will make it worth my $1.99.

  • jan

The Sound Check thing might be a good preview of what we will see on Saturday night. I’m excited about seeing it. I wonder if we will see more than one song on it.

  • leome

Not gonna lie, if I had Iphone or Ipod Touch I would buy this just for the fun. Though I’m pretty sure I’d stop using it after a day.

I’m actually more curious about the Soundcheck thing cause we’ll get new music from it. And I want new Cook music, real stuff by him.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I forgot about the Wal-mart sound check… I should add that to the post!

  • ozarka

rumors abound that democratic candidate, Barack Obama, will be making an appearance.

However, according to the entertainment show EXTRA…

While there’s no official comment, a well-placed source on SNL tells EXTRA McCain will be on [this weekend], but Obama won’t.

Maybe they’ve got their facts mixed up, but that’s what they said on the air tonight. I’ve got it on TiVo.

  • john_socal

uh these guys have been playing together for years (david, andy, neal). I’d hardly call it a dry run… however I guess you could spin it as a debut to the masses and its going to be epic!

  • hollygo9

I, for one, cannot wait to see him on tv again.

  • Incipit

Jan, I went to the site to bookmark it, and took a quick look through the list of artists.
I cannot believe I never knew about this site before! The artists typically each do five (5!) songs ‘and’ an interview. After I tore myself away from the Bon Jovi page, I saw pages for The Foo Fighters, Five For Fighting, Chris Cornell…a rather extensive list. Chris Cornell did a mix of old (“Black Hole Sun”, and new – his “Billie Jean” from “Carry On”), so whatever DC does, there will absolutely be a lot more than just one song!

Elsewhere, this has generated a lot of interest, so much so that people are wondering if DC fans will crash the WalMart server…but I think it’ll be good to go; WalMart will also be streaming the performance in their electronic department on all the demo TV’s, and cuts will be available to buy on their site..

I just need to know what time the performance will be up on the site – And here I thought SNL was Christmas Morning! Whoah.

  • ShariG

Pink and Snow Patrol also have applications on I Tunes. I think David was perhaps just the first. Its kind of a cute publicity generator. I bought it, but it may not work on my I Touch. I think I bought it before September, probably in August so mine maynot be the right generation.

  • ShariG

Hi John, it is true that Andy, Neal, and David have played together with the Midwest Kings, but Kyle and Joey are somewhat new to the group. It was still good that they had a chance to play the Viper room before debuting the band on national television, don’t you think?

Thanks, Trina, for the information on the Walmart Sound Check. This is the first that I have heard about it.

  • FolkFan

I agree with MJ’s characterization—the Viper Room was a dry-run. While the fact that DC played with two of of his band members in MWK and that his guitarist played on the record makes this transition a whole lot easier, two of the five members of the band are new. That said, I have faith that these guys will mesh well enough to put on some great performances in the next couple of weeks, particularly with the chance to do a dry run like they did. (Checks DVR to make sure everything is set for SNL.) I think that Walmart Soundcheck has the potential to be really cool.

If you don’t want to see nasty comments about one or both Davids, stay out of the comment sections on EW. Don’t know what it is about that particular website, but it really seems to bring out the haters. The EW articles this fall have been quite nice for both and (as this is a DC thread) I must say that I really liked that one about the band/video shoot. But the comments sections? Ugh.

  • waffle

OMG!!! I clinked on the link to the Walmart Soundcheck site on Trina’s post and saw David’s “coming soon” box at the bottom leftmost part of the screen. When my cursor accidentally came into contact with the box, it actually played a short snippet of David’s performance! This wasn’t there the last time I checked that site, and let me tell ya, he looked HOT!!! :)

  • Layla

It’s Thursday morning here and my official countdown has begun for Saturday!!!Soundcheck and SNL in one day! So much Cookie …lovin’ it.

You all made me laugh: sitting in the dark in your living rooms with your itunes app. watching DC on SNL!!! I would do it too if I could! My daughters, 16 and 19, who love DC’s voice but are skeptical because he was on AI (snobs!), while not as exited as I am (of course) are quite impressed that he is going to be on SNL so soon. They are youtube Tina Fey fans.

I will of course get them to watch soundcheck with me to get their unbiased opinion…I’m very interested to hear what they think, as young people, who are really into music, who are waaaaaay outside the AI bubble.

  • Dlynne

Is it Saturday yet? I can hardly wait!

  • Layla

    Really Waffle!!!??! Headed there NOW!

  • LK08

I have never heard of this Walmart Soundcheck. I will have to check it out.

On a positive note about EW, I happened into the article today through a google alert and as many negative comments that are there, there are also tons of comments saying positive things about both guys and how they are friends.

  • Layla

You are so right Waffle! In that little clip he looks effin’ HAWT! Played it a few times, and suspect I will until Saturday when I can see the real thing.

I must admit that I am impressed with this sound check thing. I watched a few à ¥ast performances (Foo Fighters!) and this sound check thing is really well done. The quality of the videos is excellent.

If he does between 3-5 songs like others have done! I didn’t like the idea of him leaking songs at first, but now I am so on board for this! Yahoo!

    Is it Saturday yet?

  • elisad

Awww, the cute little app, if only I had an iPhone…

OMG waffle! Why aren’t I seeing that! I can see other people’s…Not fair!

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

    He does look hot!
I think I saw Joey Clement’s hair LOL
    Haha. Can’t wait till Davember!

  • justic

elisad i can’t see it either. i see everybody else but cookie.
for those who can see it can you give us more details please?
    ETA: thanks widz & Incipit!

  • elisad

Thanks for recording it widz! Love ya~ (It’s on d-c.org)

  • Incipit

for those who can see it can you give us more details please?

It must have something to do with the feeds, there are other people who don’t have the clip yet either – Keep refreshing?

OK, it’s only about six seconds long, I think that’s Joey (hair) in the left hand corner, as the camera pans with David you can see the drum kit behind him and the top of the Kid’s head…he appears to be moderately rocking out…since the hair is not flying around…David is wearing what looks like a cocoa brown (on my monitor) collared shirt…and singing with no guitar in this cut…one Bling…and he looks absolutely delicious – so keep refreshing?

This clip has destroyed my idea of waiting until after SNL to watch Sound Check.

    Cannot be done.

    Resistance was always futile (snerk)

  • redridinghood

Omg at the clip, I’m so excited! I was hoping for a sound snippet but the visuals are hot so that’s ok.

  • Layla

You have to click on his name. The clip comes up immediately.

  • sma11ie

Omg, why am I so irrationally excited about seeing a 1 inch large, soundless, and less than 10 second long snippet of DC singing?? I’ve watched that probably 50 times already. Do y’all think he’s singing LO? I may be projecting (because, yes, I’ve already imposed the music and voice to that image in my mind), but I feel like he could be singing that line, “try to leave a light on when I’m gone” in that clip. And I think I’ve always envisioned him performing LO sans guitar, though not sure why. Anyway, is it 11/1 yet??

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

Same here! I had LO in my head when I saw the clip. haha
Since LO has piano, am I right in assuming that we’ll see Andy play the piano part? Since he’s rhythm guitar/keyboard..:P

The wait is becoming unbearable!! haha

  • waffle

I’m glad you all are as excited as I am! I wasn’t expecting to feel this way. Guess I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing DC perform on TV, until I happened upon that clip. Wow, what a rush!!!

  • Garnetstar

mac I need this info stat. Is Neal listed as the guitar player on LO? I like all that info and usually look at it when I get the CD booklet. Thank You.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Aboutà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – which has all the info about the song. Who it is produced by, written by, musicians etc.”

  • mac

    Garnetstar,
I just looked. It says Tim Pierce: Guitars and Neal Tiemann: Guitars. Others are: Paul Bushnell: Bass, Rob Cavallo: Piano, Dorian Crozier: Drums, and Jaie Muhoberac: Keyboards

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

    Thanks mac!

  • poporange

I would not be surprised if McCain apeared on SNL considering Pailin was on last Saturday it is free publicity..Makes sence politics suck…

Well the good new for DC fans he will be on it for sure so ya can skip right to his preformance. That is one constant at least……

  • wordnerdarchie

In regards to Soundcheck they do have the clip up at the tubey – since it looks like they disabled the clip at Walmart now.
Here is the alternate place to see the 5 second snippet.

  • Incipit

In regards to Soundcheck they do have the clip up at the tubey – since it looks like they disabled the clip at Walmart now.

Wordnerdarchie, the clip at WalMart is still functioning just fine for me….I was worried for a moment at your post, thinking that if we had broken the clip, what will we do to on Saturday to the site! But I think it’s a different issue, that some people are not able to get it, either a streaming issue, or the platform being used.

The Cook News Network (CNN) has come through however, as evidenced by your link. Someone has done a beautiful job, and an appreciated service for all those who were disappointed, and they also get to play the clip ‘lebbenty million’ times, (snerk) and anticipate tomorrow.

  • Trina

It’s really pathetic how excited a 5 second clip has made me. Even more pathetic how many times I watched it. And we should start seeing SNL promos with him and Ben tonight! :jittery_tb:

  • elisad

    I love Ben too…

  • cookbunny

Also remember to watch NBC tonight (yes, even if it means missing Grey’s), because most likely David (and possibly the band) will tape promos with Ben Affleck TODAY and they will start airing tonight!

  • wordnerdarchie

It was unavailable for me for a while, but now it’s back again. Very strange, but thanks Incipit, your post motivated me to go back and check again. :doh_tb:

  • sma11ie

Also remember to watch NBC tonight (yes, even if it means missing Greyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s)

    SO.EXCITED. Besides, it’s all about 30Rock tonight :)

  • Layla

I checked the itunes store in Denmark to see if DC’s LO or record have been added. You can still just buy TOML, but get this…you can buy the LO app.

How stupid is that! Or is it? A strange kinda PR nevertheless.

Re SNL: I haven’t been this nervous since TuesDaves during AI. I just know at the end of the show I’m going to grab my phone and try to vote!!

    Cook News Network (CNN)

    CNN rules!

  • maturin

A big chunk of new Cook stuff up at Walmart Soundcheck.

Ten pictures of Cook and the band.

40 seconds of Cook talking about the album name and a tiny snippet of the band playing Light On.

A five song set list is visible in the promo clip.

  • sunchick

Editing my comment to protect the spoiler-free…. _______ is on the set list! :jittery_tb:

Also, I totally got my Light On Lighter yesterday, and if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. Seriously, I found a new use for it. I left work later than usual and our parking lot is not well lit. So I turned on my Light On Lighter and it made like Ruldoph and helped me get to my car.

  • cheese

The full Soundcheck performance will be up on November 15th, so we’re not getting four new songs on Nov. 1. The good news is that there is no Magic Rainbow on the setlist.

  • maturin

It should be noted that we just see the camera pan by a set list. Doesn’t say for certain that those are the songs that will be played.

    Resume spazzing out.

Also, while the front page says “David Cook Nov. 1″, the copy inside reads

Singer David Cook rocks the Soundcheck stage with an electrifying performance. David previews tracks from his highly anticipated self-titled solo record . . . Come back and check out his full performance on Nov 15.

That may mean they post just a taste this week and the full thing later.

Don’t want any deaths from Cook-us interruptis. :eek_wp:

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Okay…was it just me or were there some vocal issues going on there…?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Hmmmm….I saw: “Light On”, “Lie”, “Bar-ba-sol”, “Heroes”, and “Declaration”….

Sigh. Can the 18th get here already…?

ETA: I’m hearing from a very good source that the Soundcheck performance will in fact take place on November 15th, not the 1st.

  • gingerly

I would really like to know that if we venture into a Walmart on the 1st will we be able to see the entire thing on their TV’s. I guess I will go to find out. I need light bulbs (It’s hell leaving that Light On) and bacon.

  • Trina

I always remember the Soundchecks going up on the site the same week they appear in stores but I guess it could vary. To be honest I thought November 1st. seemed early for in store promotion anyway. The point of Soundcheck is to help sell the music.

They showed the first SNL promo about 10 minutes ago and my phone rang three times since from various people calling to ask if I saw it :laugh_tb:

Oh SQUEE! Funny thing is my daughter and I were joking before that somehow they would get in a tie-in involving voting and AI and sure enough they did in the promo.
