After playing a concert at Cain’s ballroom in Tulsa OK last night, David Cook and his band headed to an after-party at the Gray Snail, a bar he used to play with his current bandmates, Neal Tiemann and Andy Skib, back when they were the Midwest Kings.

Of course, the guys took to the stage to play a few impromptu tunes. Watch them perform “Little Lies”, and if you want more, check out David Cook’s Fansite. Tour opener and Rockstar Supernova contestant, Ryan Star shared vocals with David on Ryan’s “Breathe,” plus Andy Skib sang lead vocals on a couple of MWK numbers.

Tulsa is where David was making a living as a working musician/bartender when he tried out for American Idol in 2007.

  • rockvixen

    This was great!

Why is David always wearing a hat now?

  • leome

I just commented in the headlines… but bringing it here, I love acoustic David.
And it’s always cool to see a bunch of musicians just having fun.
Breathe with Ryan is awesome, I’ve been waiting for them to duet and it finally happened.

Love the glasses, and the shirt. lol

Why is David always wearing a hat now?

He’s the only one who can answer that and I think the main reason is probably that he likes it. But, David sweats a lot and his hair doesn’t look that pretty when it’s wet. I wonder if that’s one of the reason. It looks better under the hat.

  • weareallinnocent

That was great, I agree. Some time later I must check out the others at DCO.

    Thanks MJ!

  • Keel

rockvixxen — He wasn’t wearing at a hat at Cain’s Ballroom earlier in the evening. He probably just got too sweaty during the “official” concert, the “Locktopus” came out and the hat was the fastest way for him to tame it so he looked kinda presentable for the Grey Snail. I feel kinda sorry for him actually. He really does have some shitty hair going on. Needs all the Hombre Solutions he can handle, that one.

Oooh. And I heard he did acoustic Heroes. Haven’t seen that one pop up yet.

  • templeton

Wow, he & the boys sounded awesome. Can’t believe Neal can play the guitar while smoking a cig. like that, lol.

  • SashaB

Love Acoustic!Dave. He kills on Little Lies.

Here are some professional photos by Jeremy Charles from last night’s Cain’s Ballroom concert that preceded this sekrit one. David Cook at Cain’s Ballroom

  • gingerly

Love acoustic DWEEB! They are amazing. It must be fantastic for David to be able to come back to Tulsa and play some of the stages he used to play where 5 people showed up only to find a full house and everybody singing along. It’s karma, I tell you.

  • sma11ie

EEK, the Breathe “duet” with Ryan! I wish they actually sang together more during the song, but I won’t complain cuz that was frickin adorable– I just looove his friendship with Ryan haha. And I love love love Little Lies. I really hope acoustic Heroes turns up. I dunno why, but it just warms my heart to see DC and his band having a great time reconnecting with their old buddies in Tulsa.

ETA: Don’t think this has been posted yet:

It’s a GREAT radio interview from a Tulsa radio show. He talks about pirate pants, Adam/Permanent, etc. etc.

  • nanjowood

Wow, I’d have loved to be there! Music is just so much better in these small venues. David sounds great and I love how we can hear Andy’s vocals too and how much they add to the song. Their two voices work so well together. I wish Andy didn’t have to stifle his vocals in regular concerts; the man was born to sing.

Thanks for sharing this. I hope more video from the Gray Snail turns up. (Now we just need a little show like this after one of the west coast concerts. . . )

  • lovegoodmusic

Glad to see David and his band mates having fun. And I want an acoustic David Cook album or EP. Thank you for posting this MJ.

  • Dr. Tracey

I love David’s music whichever way it comes but there’s something special about the acoustic stuff, flove it.

  • Keel

    Bwah! Just noticed the shirt . . . .

Word on DCO is that it’s an abstinence t-shirt from his own high school. Would you believe him? Yeah, I didn’t think so either.

  • leome

    More videos…
    Heroes
An almost Hotel California and Light On

Can I haz an acoustic album one of these days?

  • tierbee

I love, love acoustic Dave — what an awesome bunch of guys :)

  • templeton

Thanks for the additional youtubage leome. Boy, I wish the crowd would STFU so that you could just hear him singing. Sounds like the crowd was really into it, that is for sure.

  • SashaB

Seriously, acoustic sets are not sing alongs around a camp fire. He does give people a chance to sing – and uh, they could wait…oh well. Looks like a fun night.

  • tierbee

Boy, I wish the crowd would STFU so that you could just hear him singing.

Haha, templeton, I finally couldn’t watch them anymore because the singing along was so distracting. It’s cool that everyone was into it but… I want to hear David, dammit!

Seriously, acoustic sets are not sing alongs around a camp fire. He does give people a chance to sing – and uh, they could waità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦oh well.

Agree. From the earlier vids, I tried to be charitable and gave the benefit of the doubt that perhaps the camera was just around a bunch of loud sing-alongy (and off pitch) fans, but it does appear from multiple camera angles that lots of people were indeed singing along in full (sometimes screaming) voice for the ENTIRE freaking song. I know David likes people to sing along, but have these people never been to other concerts to know that acoustic sets are not made for sing-along for the ENTIRE song for EACH and EVERY song?

  • BootStar

I’m very anti-smoking, but dayum, David and Andy both sounded awesome there. I”m guessing their vocal cords are pretty well-acclimated to smoky bar rooms. Maybe Obama can share his quitting smoking secrets with Neal once the Prez actually successfully kicks the habit.

Personally, I think David wears the hat as much to piss off over-controlling fans as to hide his sweaty hair.

And, yeah, an acoustic EP from a live show would be perfect!

  • leome

but have these people never been to other concerts to know that acoustic sets are not made for sing-along for the ENTIRE song for EACH and EVERY song?

For me I’d ask, have you never been to a concert where you just couldn’t help but sing along?
Usually when I go to concerts people sing (and sing bad and loud) and you can still listen to the artist… one doesn’t stop the other.
If I was there I’d be singing, so I can’t blame them. Acoustic does not mean people have to shut up. And it’s pretty obvious that David likes and encourages it.
I dunno, I can enjoy those videos, I listen to the voice even with the crowd singing it.
Oh, and this is just a bunch of people having fun in a bar. Drinks are all over the place…

  • sunchick

Seriously, acoustic sets are not sing alongs around a camp fire.

Try and tell that to a bunch of drunk girls. :drunk_tb: Not that I have any experience that points to the number of drinks imbimbed being directly proportional to the amount of loud, off key singing in bars, mind you. It’s purely an academic hypothesis. :innocent1_tb:

I am loving the acoustic Heroes. Next single, please?

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s karma, I tell you.

Inorite? The full circle-ness of the whole thing makes me a tad verklempt. Right up until the point David chastises the peeps who are cheering for the “JC Penney’s version” of Hotel Cali and calls it the shit you listen to when you buy bedding. Cuz, bwah, the mental image of Mr. Rockstah shopping for bedding at Penneys… :laugh_tb:

  • BootStar

I don’t always appreciate the singing along, but I didn’t mind them here. This was all pretty casual and non-rehearsed, and actually the girls singing along to “Breathe” new the lyrics a lot better than DC did. LMAO at that number. And did y’all catch when Ryan stuck out his tongue while hitting a high note? I guess he’s had vocal training too. *snerk*

Oh, and I love how David says, “Oh, shit,” after Ryan comes over to hug him at the end. Good, good stuff!

  • CathyMK

Love acoustic Dave, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen him. This gets my hopes up that maybe someday he’ll indulge me with an acoustic version Axium’s song Hold. That would be so haunting and beautiful.

  • weareallinnocent

Seriously, acoustic sets are not sing alongs around a camp fire. He does give people a chance to sing – and uh, they could waità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦oh well.

Yeah, selfish shits, enjoying the moment themselves instead of thinking of us crazies waiting for the youtube videos at home. ;-P

I imagine at the venue, they could hear David and the band just fine (over themselves.) I suspect the only reason the audience accompaniment (lol) is so prominent is they are closer to the videographer than Cook and/or the speakers.

But whatever, I think it’s cool. To each their own…

  • lavender1960

notice no one outsings Ryan Star, bwah, well you got a small venue and happy people with alcohol in their system, etc.

I will say that we, as in the audience in Massey Hall, sounded terrific when we were asked by Neil Finn of Crowded House to sing on a few occasions, but I credit the acoustics in the venue really, bwah. Crowded House wisely was selling CDS of all their concerts that tour, great to relive magical moments like that.

  • sma11ie

Oh, and I love how David says, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Oh, shit,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ after Ryan comes over to hug him at the end. Good, good stuff!

I think he was scared that Ryan was going to kiss him again, haha. Love Ryan and DC… do we have a bromance name for them yet? Dyan? Ravid? Haha…

actually the girls singing along to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breatheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ new the lyrics a lot better than DC did.

I know, WTF, Dave! Can’t you be a professional and learn the words of this impromptu other artist’s cover? But seriously, I actually wanted to hear him sing Breathe with Ryan, but he pretty much had no idea what the words were, and mostly jammed or mumbled except for a few lines of the chorus…

  • SashaB

Some fans seem to think singing along is de rigueur – for jam sessions and at concerts. There have been reports at larger paying venues where people sang along North Hampton and Cat’s Cradle. To songs like LIE. For me (for you), not sure I want some fan singing in my ear when I’m trying to listen to Dave. Had I paid to see that acoustic session, I think I would have found the off tune caterwauling off putting. Just sayin.

  • SashaB

Yeah, and singing along to Permanent would not be appreciated either. To each his own, clearly.

ETA: But every audience is different. The sing alongs to acoustic stuff just seems jarring. A rock concert, not so much. And I’ve been fortunate – never had a bad experience with fan singing in my ear at a DC concert. Thank goodness.

  • Keel

For me Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d ask, have you never been to a concert where you just couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t help but sing along?

Of course, but not for an entire song and not for practically every song on the set. I have, however, had other fans yell songs in my ear just because it was their favoritest song evah (and I guess that made it okay for them to ruin my experience) and that was annoying enough. I dunno, I guess I just feel that loud singing for extended periods of time by fans is just as rude to other fans as holding up big signs (again for extended periods of time) that block the view of the artist. A little goes a long way as far as sing-alongs, IMO. And obviously, from the other comments here, YMMV.

  • BootStar

SashaB (Thanks for the link to those professional photos, BTW; they were YOWZA!), normally I would agree with you, but I think here it had a lot to do with the fact that this was being recorded by bystanders.

I hate it when off-key fans drown out the lead vocals when I’m at a concert, but it is really amazing to hear folks sing along to every song and know every frakkin’ word. I witnessed that at a Better Than Ezra concert last week, and it gave me chills. I’d won the tickets, so I was only tangentially familiar with their music, but it really added to the experience for me when 1300 people were singing along to a couple of their bigger hits. Maybe because most of the peeps were pretty good singers? I dunno. I actually am a pretty good singer myself and frequently sing harmony, so maybe it has to do with whether or not you can, you know, actually sing???

What I hate is when drunken fans TALK through the banter at a concert, ’cause I live for the banter.

  • weareallinnocent

Yeah, and singing along to Permanent would not be appreciated either.

Gotta agree with ya there. :-)

  • Ashley19

I love acousticà ¯ »’ David! I’d love a whole album of it!

:grin1_ee: They seem to be having SO much fun!

  • lavender1960

I think the etiquette is this:

Did the band ask for/encourage singing? Many do. And dancing. [Let's not mention the whole do you sit down or stand up for the whole concert issue.]

If no, are you drowning out the lead singer? Even with amps of great wattage blaring those guitars.

On the whole most bands most nights will tell you that hearing the audience singing along is one of the best highs of being in a band. But yes there are moments in any setlist for some quiet.

I am reminded of a U2 concert in October 2001 where everyone stood up for the whole concert, in a 20,000 seat arena, and you could hear the audience singing every word of every song. It was like a religious experience.

I do tend to sing along, it is a subsconscious reflex but I think I sing along in the common volume of the neighbours or lower. It’s very cathartic.

I am loving the acoustic Heroes. Next single, please?

    Yes, please, RCA?

The funny thing is I think by now I’ve watched every song they performed at this little secret after-concert thing from numerous angles/YouTubers, and yet I haven’t watched any videos from the actual show at Cain’s Ballroom.

    Must go rectify that immediately.

  • sunchick

Ditto. You have to play it by venue. For a small acoustic gig, if there’s a cover charge involved specifically because that person is playing, then you probably want to check the singalong tendencies to a certain degree unless prompted to participate. If it’s a more casual, guy with guitar entertaining the crowd at a hole in the wall place kind of thing, bar singalong rules apply, methinks. Unless of course David EFFING Cook is randomly playing two feet in front of me, in which case I reserve the right to tell all drunken fangirls around me to pipe the hell down.

  • kimberann

I’m glad everyone loves Dave so much. :wub_tb: What a rockstar. I love the small, intimate settings he thrives in.

  • sunchick

Awww, new favorite: clausterphobic, super zoomed Breathe. Makes we want to hang in the back with Kyle and play bongos or shake a tambourine or something. Looks like all are having…wait for it…the time of their lives. (Thank you, I’ll be here all week.)

  • Keel

Til I’m Blue is getting to be my favorite song performed by DC and the Unnamed Band:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNlikNLqYbw

This type of music is sooooo my cup of tea, it’s not even funny.

  • lizland

I’m not a fan of Little Lies, by either Fleetwood Mac or rocked up Cook. But DANG, that acoustic version was fabulous.

That is a good one, and they are having a time :-) , aren’t they? My only question would be, exactly how drunk is Ryan?! LOLz

  • May

Thanks for the videos….that was just fun to watch. I wonder if David will ever do an all acoustic set on his tour one day because that would be incredible. Nice to hear Andy and Ryan performing (I love Breathe). I actually think Ryan is an amazing songwriter and it would be cool if David collaborated with him a bit….some of Ryan’s songs are perfect for David’s voice. Was anyone surprised that that crowd knew the words to every single song including Andy’s and Ryan’s? Or maybe I was hearing just a few enthusiastic fangirls with very powerful pipes…

OK…I just read that David soundchecked a Nine Inch Nails song tonight. Is it too much to hope?? Can anyone confirm?

  • ladymadonna

So rumor has it they soundchecked another new cover tonight – NIN’s ‘Every Day is Exactly the Same.’ They often don’t play what they soundcheck the very same night, but if the bystanders with ears pressed up against the stage door were correct in what they heard, I would expect this one to pop up into the set sometime within the next few shows.

I just love that this is no manufactured pop confection of a band. They are a real, working band grinding it out on the road – testing material, evolving their sound, and by all appearances having a damn good time while doing it.

  • May

Thanks LadyM. When I heard NIN, I foolishly guessed that it would be Closer. Another WTF Cook choice. Should be very interesting!

  • Jolene

Oooooh NIN!!! Yes! I still heart Trent Reznor, used to be a big NIN fan in highschool.

More than anything, I’m so happy this tour keeps bringing us new material. Love it!

  • sunchick

NIN? Shut up! :jittery_tb: So they chose something from With Teeth? I would have guessed Downward Spiral or Pretty Hate Machine because they’re more popular, but the lyrics to that particular song are a kick in the gut. Wow.

  • EmmaJK

I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t watched any videos from the actual show at Cainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Ballroom.

    Must go rectify that immediately.

Jolene, if you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend at least the last 60 seconds of Til I’m Blue.

I’m still trying to like this song as much as everyone else seems to, but I have watched the ending of this one many, many times.

The vids from last night’s secret concert are so great. That’s the first time I’ve heard Ryan’s “Breathe”. I really, really like it. I’ll have to check out his new CD. The Ryan/David lurve is so cute.

“Theraphy” is awesome. I got so obsessed with that song too. Played it over and over and over. Listening to any of his songs once doesn’t do it justice because when you listen to it again you think “wow that is really good” and before you know it you are obsessed. Lord he knows how to invoke that in people, he’s just amazing.

tierbee, that just put a smile on my face. I really hope many of Cook’s fans give the Axium material a try. Sure its production value is nothing compared to DCTR, but there are such jems hidden in those albums.
And now, i shall go listen to some Axium myself.

David sounds so wonderful singing this song, it really fits his voice. Nice video thatnks for posting it.
