David Cook – Glamour Magazine 2008 Women of the Year Awards

David Cook performed at the Glamour Magazine 2008 Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall last night. Glamour honored Nicole Kidman, Hillary Clinton, Tyra Banks and many others for their “inspirational” achievements.

Check out this report from Entertainment Tonight. David and Hillary Clinton are interviewed together. She says she was “very happy” David Cook won. LOL. Ever the politician!

ETA: From the Huffington Post.

And to top off the night, none other than the trailblazer herself, Hillary Clinton. Friend Mary Steenburgen presented the American Idol fan with a surprise, a one-on-one serenade from David Cook with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”

ETAA: David also met Condoleezza Rice and Fergie. I wonder who he was most excited about meeting? Heh.

Watch David perform “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” at the event, HERE. Afterward, he introduces Hillary Clinton.

Also, a couple of radio interviews from yesterday:

From Mix 98.5 in Boston: David talks about the trip to Iraq he has planned in January to entertain the troops there. He also mentions that his favorite Christmas song is “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon.

OMG!! These are great pix of our Cookie. Thanks for posting them, MJ. Does he look hot or what? Love the suit.

  • blissful

Nice! Any guesses on what he sang?

What are the chances that Nicole or Hilary will post DC’s performance on youtube?

  • Trina

I just posted a Glamour blog in Headlines where the writer seemed to come away last night thinking Hillary is a big AI fan hmm. I would love to know what he sang. Oddly enough I can actually see magic rainbow fitting in very well for this particular event.

Didn’t he also attend another party for Glamour over the summer? I remember he was photographed with that chick from The Hills. Or was that another girly magazine?

  • mac

Cookie is looking mighty fine in those pictures. So so handsome in his suit. I bet those Glamour women were just eating him up! (Figuratively, not literally..heh)

  • leome

My guess is that he sang Time Of My Life. Wouldn’t that be appropriate?

Ok, is it me or Cook was the one presenting Hillary’s award? Boy, that’s kinda of a wow moment.
He looks very handsome and I love the way he’s staring at Hillary in that last picture.

  • CathyMK

Those are beautiful photos. Love Cookie’s suit and funky tie, but, David, really- cowboy boots? The pant legs don’t even fit over them! :smile2_ee: Hilary did seem like she liked him. Will this be televised at some point? Or will Glamour put up bits on their website?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Is it just me who wants to readjust the bottom of his pants over those boots? It looks like he’s wearing highwaters. LOL.

A couple of those pictures (namely 3, 4, and 5) are very yummy. But the pants thing is *killing* me. Heh.

  • jan

Yes, I noticed the highwaters and it made me smile. I don’t want him to be too perfect, so I’m not complaining.

Light On edged up 2 spots on iTunes. Do you think Hillary and Condoleeza went home and downloaded it? *grin*

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    Awesome pictures!

I wonder how freak-out moments David has? I mean, taking a step back and looking at the people surrounding him – Hilary Clinton, John McCain, Ben Affleck, Sarah Jessica Parker….

Is it just me who wants to readjust the bottom of his pants over those boots? It looks like heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wearing highwaters. LOL.

LOL! Totally tried not to notice that, and it totally didn’t work. Just wanted to reach in there and yank ’em.

  • Sarah

I had the same thought about the boots and the suit pants: they didn’t pass the transition from sitting-to-standing or climbing the stage. Oh well, like everything DC-related, I find it undeniably endearing. Do love the suit, even if it’s with the wrong footwear. And that face.

  • FolkFan

I’ve got to think that Magic Rainbow was the song of choice. Magic Rainbow at Carnegie Hall—who’d have thought that would happen 6 months ago?

Yes, the pants length over the boots was an issue. Otherwise, a very nice ensemble. I wonder how it happened that he was involved in giving Hillary Clinton her award? Cool in all events.

  • LK08

Just a side note- as a classical musician. . . . there are many people whose lifelong dream it is to perform in Carnegie Hall someday. I wonder if he realized what a big deal that was?

  • tinawina

    That picture? Haawwttt.

Ehem. Oh, um.. what an honor, Hillary Clinton, blah blah Carnegie Hall and all that.

**fans self, looks at picture again**

  • Sarah

Just a side note- as a classical musician. . . . there are many people whose lifelong dream it is to perform in Carnegie Hall someday. I wonder if he realized what a big deal that was?

I think he realized it. It is Carnegie Hall. And as the old joke goes, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.”

  • CathyMK

I wonder if he realized what a big deal that was?

He was in Carnegie Hall with Hilary Clinton and Condoleeza Rice. Since he’s a professional musician and intelligent, well brought-up guy, I don’t think there’s any question that he understood the significance. He did put a suit on, after all! ;0)

  • FolkFan

What CathyMK said. I can’t imagine that he didn’t understand the significance of playing at Carnegie Hall, particularly with that many distinguished people there.

  • Trina

From the radio interviews yesterday he sounded pretty blown away just by meeting John McCain at SNL. I’m thinking last night must have been one of those major “WOAH” moments. Singing in Carnegie Hall in the presence of the caliber of those women there, talk about a far cry from the Tulsa bar scene!

  • fallforever

I have to comment about that radio interview. I wonder how many times Rob Cavallo has cried while producing a song? I’d love to know if, say, ‘Iris’ got to him that way.

  • LK08

BTW- I was not meaning to insinuate that David Cook does not realize what a big deal this is. It was more of a comment about how huge of a deal this was.

These guys must be pinching themselves on a daily basis when they are meeting these people and singing in these places they have seen for years on television.

  • Keel

On the pants thing, I’m glad you guys mentioned that those were boots he was wearing. Because on a cursory view of the pics I thought they were some weird patterned socks he was wearing over his high-water pants.

But boy, does that face light up a room.

  • Lisa

So happy to hear David is doing a couple of acoustic songs at the Christmas in Rockefeller! Really looking forward to that! Fantastic photo’s. David is just so gosh darn photogenic it’s silly. Way to Go David’s team for getting him this Glamour gig. There were some powerful peeps there.

I wish we knew what song David sang last night or even had a clip! I too am betting it was the little rainbow that took over the world. You just have to love David and the pant leg hicked up. He is what he is, and fame is not changing him. Good to see.

What a great guy for going to Iraq! I want pics!

Hope everyone stocks up on Kleenex PLUS while listening to Permanent.

  • Trina

    Oh this is fabulous!

But the highlight of the evening was the sight of Sen. Hillary Clinton gushing and gleeful at the sight of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner David Cook, who serenaded the woman who this year was in the running to become Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first female president.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I feel very grateful to be included,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Clinton about her Glamour award, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“and I want to thank Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he did get more votes than I gotà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I guess I can live with that!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

:wub_tb: :laugh_tb: I can just imagine David cracking up with that contagious laugh of his. It’s ok Hillary, release your inner cougar!

  • sabby_rina

    Hubba Hubba!

  • FolkFan

    That’s awesome, Trina.

  • Keel

OMG! That is an awesome article Trina. I love it. All that goodness, and they say that the highlight of the evening was Sen. Clinton being Cookified? haha (tm Archie)

  • hollygo9

    Greatest story ever.
and you guys are so right about the boot/pants problem. But I think he should keep the boots and stop wearing pants. Who’s with me?

  • leome

That is so great. I can’t even imagine how it must have been for him.
Someone needs to get a video of that, David serenating a gushing and gleeful Sen. Clinton is something I’d pay to see.

  • amy123

Wow, Cookie looks so good in that outfit!!! That’s cool that all the women were loving him. I’d like to hear what he sang-bet he blew them all away.

  • Aileen

I love that Hilary is a fan. So it would appear that Magic Rainbow (could it be another song? ) went to Carnegie Hall and serenaded Hilary Clinton, and probably Cookiefied a few others such as Condi Rice.

I can just hear DC saying how absurd it all was. I’m so happy for him. All of these amazing experiences and this is just the beginning.

  • Trina

    Another brief mention

And Hillary Clinton, in Isaac Mizrahi, was surprised by a performance by “American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s” David Cook (said to be her favorite). à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“He did get more votes than I did,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Clinton of Cook.

  • IGetCranked

What an amazing event. I am just blown away by the oppurtunities that is coming from being on a tv show. Those are some great pictures too.

  • elisad

This made my day, no, my week. Oh wait, we get to hear the album this week and have the gala. So…day.

  • maturin

So hilarious. WWWD also came away with the impression of a Senatorial fandom:

“And Hillary Clinton, in Isaac Mizrahi, was surprised by a performance by “American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s” David Cook (said to be her favorite). à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“He did get more votes than I did,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Clinton of Cook.”

Now, it’s possible she just couldn’t resist the natural quote about the votes. But I wonder how he ended up being the presenter for her award?

  • Michelle

So. Freakin. Gorgeous. What? How? Hillary and Carnegie Hall? It’s like that day we got too many things at once! He must think this is some crazy dream :D

BUT – sorry DC, but Happy Xmas is one of those songs I reflexively change the station on when it comes on. ;)

  • listen

So, are those “glamour shots” of Cook? ha ha

Wow, does he look good or what!

Anyway, new poster here. Those wonderful photos of David are what finally got me to join this site.

Will probably go back to lurking…

  • elisad

Glamour posted a video, you can see David for 1/100 second. Can you tell what he was singing by that? LOL.

ETA: OK I just saw the answer…he sang The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. As a gift? Who can find me some gifts like that…

  • Trina

    YEP! OMG

And to top off the night, none other than the trailblazer herself, Hillary Clinton. Friend Mary Steenburgen presented the American Idol fan with a surprise, a one-on-one serenade from David Cook with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

NEED.video.now! How on earth did she not dissolve into a puddle? Simon would be so proud!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Shut. Up. I could kill him for singing Yo’ Face to Hilary and not recording it!!!!

  • FolkFan

Now there’s a nice gift from a friend. And, yes, video would be much appreciated. I bet none ever pops up, unless Glamour ends up releasing it….

  • sunchick

A personal serenade? With that song? I am now picturing a Cookified Hillary Clinton attempting to supress a squee. Of course, it makes perfect sense. She is a sucker for musicians. Want. video.

But I think he should keep the boots and stop wearing pants. Whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s with me?

:jittery_tb: :lol_tb: Oh man, you owe me a new computer screen.

Seriously, though, can you imagine how trippy and slightly intimidating it would be to go from obscure musician to singing for that particular crowd a year later? Hillary Clinton, Condi Rice, Ms. Tyra, Jane Goodall, Natalie Portman…. As Nicole Kidman might say, good on ya, mate!

  • tinawina

listen, stay and play! lurking is overrated.

He sang Yo Face!!! Directly to her!! Jesus biscuits. LOL.

  • gingerly

OMG the face song. I’d have died a happy woman right then and there.

About the wardrobe malfunction, I just think that makes him more adorkable.

  • KarenLE67

I was very pleased to hear that the John Lennon song is Dave’s favorite xmas song, I really hope to hear him sing it sometime. I hope if he does it at Rockefeller that it gets televised. Just a few weeks ago (on Lennon’s bday) I downloaded a few Lennon songs form iTunes, and that was one of them.

  • Michelle

Yeah. I’m going on a pouting strike here at home till I get that exact same present too.

  • Lisa

Shut. Up. I could kill him for singing Yoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Face to Hilary and not recording it!!!!

NNnoooo!!! David sang Yo Face????? Argh. Gwen you know how much we wanted that studio version.

Please let there be someone, somewhere who recorded this. PLEASE!

  • Sarah

This is quite possibly the most fun thread I’ve ever read anywhere, with incredible links to footage and blogs (Huffington Post!) alike. Where else have we ever seen (or will we ever see again) such dazzling names as Jane Goodall, Salman Rushdie, Hillary Clinton, Condi Rice, the brave international honorees, Michael Bloomberg … juxtaposed with that of David Cook? The night had to have been mind-boggling for everyone there.
And I bet the memory of David serenading her with First Time is going to swirl around in Hillary’s head for a very long time.

  • cheese

So, I wonder if Hillary got all three verses of Yo Face? You know, the “kissed your mouth” and “lay with you” ones? Why couldn’t Condi do a cell-cert?

  • leome

    Why couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Condi do a cell-cert?

Jealousy. Look at these photos. You know Condi wanted to be serenated by David Cook too.

  • Michelle

    the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“kissed your mouthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“lay with youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Oh, my. I’d forgotten about those. LOL, take that, Bill!

And if her friends went through all that trouble to get him there to present/serenade to her, you KNOW she has got to be a major fan :D

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

NNnoooo!!! David sang Yo Face????? Argh. Gwen you know how much we wanted that studio version.

I almost swallowed my tonsils, only I forgot they took ’em out.

I am sooooooooooooo jealous of Hilary Clinton. Forget that she came this close to being president. She was freakin’ serenaded by David Cook. That’s not fair!!

    Why couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Condi do a cell-cert?

LOLOLOL!! Imagine that. Actually, I didn’t even recognize her in the video, she was so glammed up.

  • AInoob

How cool for David! What a ride he’s been on, his life must feel so surreal sometimes. I’m so happy he’s having so many cool experiences.

The comments in this thread are cracking me up! Holly, I’m with you, girl, I think your solution for the boots/pants problem is sound.

I got a chuckle out of Hillary being a cougar for Cook :clap_tb: And with gifts like this, I know all Cookie fans want to be BFFs with Mary Steenburgen now. This one sure does!

  • CathyMK

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Condi look that happy. A Cookified Secretary of State! Love her hair too.

You know, I don’t know why we’re all so surprised about Hilary- she’s married to the first rock and roll president, after all! She obviously has good taste in music, among other things.

Like all good Cook fans, I’m on board with the (no) pants solution as well.

  • sma11ie

I keep refreshing this thread waiting for all the awesome super sleuthing DC fans to dig up some video of the song!! Yo Face– full version? I needs now! C’mon, guys, I know you can do it! Haha. This is awesome.

  • kathrynTX

“He sang Yo Face!!! Directly to her!! Jesus biscuits. LOL.”
(Ooops messed up the quote thingy.)

Jesus Biscuits, indeed! Nooooooooo…we must have a record of Yo Face! And with all the verses. I was totally ready to just pass out if he sang that 2nd or 3rd verse on AI, once I found out he was singing that song. I used to play it all the time on the piano and “sing” all the verses. Except…I can’t really sing….BWAH!

Oh…he looks extraordinary. Happy and like he’s enjoying himself and just all kinds of…good. Love the boots with the suit, darlin’, you just keep rockin’ those boots. Goofball.

This is SO cool for him. Wow. I bet he’s still stunned…ever since May…or January, whenever. YAY Cook!

  • wjmtv

Glamour has the vid. It’s right here: http://www.glamour.com/video

(ETA: The one with his picture on the right. If you click on the big one of Nicole, you get “highlights”)

He doesn’t sing the whole thing, darnit. And it’s a very different version. I think somebody’s voice may be a wee bit tired.

Not that I’m complaining. When it’s Cookie, it’s all good.

  • Lisa

It’s the same version he did on AI! Thank you wjmtv! MJ any chance of getting that ripped???

*sigh* that is so beautfiful! David’s lovely voice, acoustic guitar.

  • kathrynTX

Oh that was a bee-yoo-ti-full acoustic version! It was the non-AI, non-competition, acoustic version. I think he sounded great. Got that slightly edgy(?) tone going on, which is how he sounds when not on Idol, IMO. Thank you all for all the photos and the video link. mj rocks. You all rock.

  • FolkFan

Thank you for finding the video—I had been wondering if Glamour would post it. I do love AcousticDave. One of these days, I bet that he’ll record a full version, and it will be fantastic.

  • leome

    Thanks for the link.
That sounded great, but it felt so short. Still, a very nice surprise. Always love the banter.

  • gingerly

Wow. That was beautiful (she said as she goes to watch it for the 4th time).

    David’s banter FTW!

  • AZIdolFan

WOW!!!! i’m loving the pics and video!!! Thanks for finding this!!!!!

  • CathyMK

    (Sigh) Wonderful video.

I’m getting a kick out of thinking that Hilary Clinton and Mary Steenburgen may be excitedly waiting for the album to drop next week too. How many famous women will disappear for a few hours next Tues. while they listen to the record? Ellen Degeneres and Oprah seem to be fans as well…

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

LOL @ Mary voting 75 times. Heeeeeeee…! Killer.

I do hate you, Hilary. Ahhhhh, who am I kidding? I’m actually stoked that she’s such a fan.

Loved that acoustic version. Keep ’em wanting more, Cookie.

  • shell29

Thanks for posting the video! That was a very nice acoustic version, well done Cook! This will tide me over until the album leaks.

    Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s banter FTW!

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

The acoustic version was awesome! David’s banter is something I never get tired of. :wub_tb:

  • Jolene

Here’s a YouTube of the video, for those having problems watching on the Glamour site (like me!):

David’s Performance on The Women of the Year Awards.

  • FolkFan

I suspect that Kelly Ripa may be a fan, as well. Someone on the Regis and Kelly show must be—they’ve played LO as transition music to commercial a few times.

  • Trina

David will be chatting on Z100 on 11/18
I’m like dying today. Between the video from last night, Hillary fangirling, the AMA red carpet performance, PLJ acoustic show :jittery_tb: And the Dave Wright gala is this tomorrow eeeeee!! I got my shoes for it tonight!!

  • Jolene

If today was a preview of what’s going to come these following weeks, than I might as well throw in the towel. Geesh, this being a DC fan is like a full time job keeping up with it all!

And I’m loving every second of it.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

    Cookie crumbs everywhere!!! GAH!!

    But I love it! LOL.

  • dahirsh

PLJ acoustic show? When did that come up? And when is it? Or are you talking about David Archuletta tomorrow?

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

There’s a lot going on and I love it… can’t wait for next Tuesday!!!! :D

  • primeminister

Cook did not disappoint—he presented himself so well and sounded great.

Wow, what a year it has been for him!

  • dahirsh

We need an MP3 of the Glamour performance

  • reinharv

There were definitely some cougars there. LOL. I know that look really well :redface_wp:

David probably went out and bought that suit the day before – so that his 2nd suit now and yes his boots made it hike up and didn’t make the sitting to standing transition so I’m with a few other posters – my vote is to leave the pants off next time to avoid that happening again. (slaps face…) okay I’m okay now.

Love the “HI” OMG he just makes me smile so much.

  • ShariG

You know what, he just gets hotter and hotter by the day. He looked and sounded wonderful. Hillary Clinton may not have won the nomination, but she certainly has won my admiration for her taste in Idols.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

I don’t know where to post this but here it is:

Thanks, everyone, for all of the David Cook questions. I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t met a more down-to-earth, good-natured, scene-free artist in ages à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ no small feat considering winning American Idol means, at the very least à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ front-page news, a spot on Saturday Night Live, and a national TV spot featuring you dancing around in your skivvies à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he seemed truly touched that so many DC fans submitted so many thoughtful questions.

Of the many things David discussed in the interview today, he shared his favorite author (that disemboweling sceneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a CLASSIC!), boiled down his experience on American Idol to just three words, told us that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s THISCLOSE to getting a dog (aww!), and told us about one fan gift he may be regifting to Mom. Or not.

Check back next week for the video footage of David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Buzzworthy interview. And until then, watch his new video, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ shot at L.A. Valley College in Los Angeles.

    MTV Buzzworthy

  • ShariG

One question. Why on neither radio interview did they ever mention Light On? They talked about the self titled album and KISS was even playing TOML when they introduced him. I honestly don’t get it. Light On is really a great song and he does a fantastic job. Why do they avoid any mention of it on the radio?

  • templeton

Thanks for the video mj. Much appreciated. Thanks to everyone here for all the great links. Cook looked adorable and sounded awesome.

  • elisad

WPLJ and AMA? Hey good morning for me~ They have been playing him let’s not blame the wrong station LOL.

  • FolkFan

Thanks, widz—I love how just about every journalist that directly deals with DC ends up thinking well of him.

Nice that he’ll be on two NYC stations on 11/18. Does anyone know if the acoustic cafe thing on WPLJ will be broadcast? Should be high-quality. I hope that he brings Neal with him—I loved the two of them playing together in the instructional video.

  • sma11ie

Aww, it was the short version, but still wonderful and he was adorkable, so no complaints and yay for crumbs!

    WPLJ and AMA?

    What AMA?

ETA: Nevermind, caught up on the Headlines thread.

  • elisad

  • hollygo9

Hilary, your consolation prize was sooooooo much better than the win, baby girl.
Seven days until Cookie-Time. I’m going mad with antici……….pation.

  • Seachange

This post and thread has made me giddy. I cannot stop grinning and chuckling every time I think of Hillary Clinton (and all those high-profile women) being a fan of David Cook. When did that happen? Only when she was running for President of the USA. It’s too funny-awesome!

David looked awed in the interview clip, and yet, there was that ability to express himself, that irrepressible laugh. The acoustic Yo’ Face was too short but still shiver-inducing. The boots — well, David likes to laugh at himself. That should keep him grounded in all of this!

My face hurts from smiling and laughing so much. And more is still to come!
