David Cook filmed his bit in the VH1 comedy Free Radio right before he set off on his spring college tour. He plays himself being interviewed by the clueless intern who runs the show. After, the emo chick reads some of her bad poetry to him.

David does well playing a low-key straight man opposite the station hi-jinks.

“You’re hair was so gay when you first started.” = Lolz

Check out his appearance after the jump…

Hahah… that was quite funny. I’ve never seen this show before. Cook did a pretty good job.

  • hypertwink

I’ve seen some shows and it’s quite funny. I agree, mj, David plays the straight man well. Anyway, his skin is phenomenal!

ETA: I love the references to “tops” and “bottoms” when discussing the tranny hooker. LOL

  • Layla

Love the AI pgay progression of hair scene…. and the emo poetry from the receptionist. :lol_tb:

ye gods is that man purty or what?!? The skin the skin

  • gingerly

Too funny. I watched this show last week in anticipation. It’s quite amusing. Good show for Cook to be on. His expressions are priceless.

  • psnax

LOL, that was pretty funny. To educate the uninformed (who has never seen this show) it’s scripted right? Because DC came off very natural and realistic – especially the facial expressions. I know he was playing himself but sometimes that can be hard when you’re also scripted.

  • gingerly

It’s not really scripted. David had no idea the dude was going to say. He just had to ad lib off it and did an excellent job…celebrity blood lmao!

  • ladymadonna

VH1 has some bonus clips of Cook’s appearance up at their site. He talks about being poor before Idol, and about how he runs things now that he’s the boss and hired Neal and Andy to join his band. I just love me an Idol who can properly compare the dynamic on the tour bus to various political ideologies and forms of governance.

  • hypertwink

The guest who go here must be adventurous (and foolhardy if they do not know how to ad lib) to say the least. I probably think that David knew what topics were going to be discussed but not exactly what questions or how they will be asked.

  • gingerly

Thanks for the bonus clips LadyM. I didn’t know about them. David was obviously paying attention in 7th grade civics.

  • psnax

I can’t edit my earlier comment to say that having watched the bonus clips I guess the show is maybe semi-scripted rather than fully scripted? In any event, it was pretty funny.

  • Dr. Tracey

LOL that was funny, David’s a natural.

  • BootStar

Does this show air on television or is it only on the web? That Lance dude is pretty funny!

I wonder what happened to the hat David was wearing here. I guess he ditched it when he got the black one. In retrospect, I rather like the ensemble he was wearing. Is it me, though, or does it seem like he wears things until they rapidly disintegrate or he loses them?

And I think David is ready for Stephen Colbert now. Didn’t David give him one of his cancer bracelets when they were on Good Morning America last Xmas? Maybe Stephen will have David on to help promote that upcoming cancer run. I would love to see him keep it together with the crazy shit Colbert pulls!

  • Aileen

Free Radio is a regular series on VH1. David looks really cute in the segment, and his facial expressions are spot on.

  • Jocelin

After checking the preview for the show, I’ve just now programmed a season’s pass for this show on my dvr. My best friend looks and acts so much like emo Sarah, I have to watch this show and, of course, I laughed at David with emo Sarah, the receptionist. Those lyrics? LOL. I love quirky shows like this and The Office is on a downward turn right now so…

Oh, David seems quite at ease at this type of comedy. He could do well in a small role in one of those Judd Apatow/Jason Segal/Seth Rogen comedies.

  • SashaB

OMG. That was funny. He has great ‘timing’ too.

Love the bonus clips. Hee. Thanks

  • kimberann

Dave would excel as an actor as well. He has the star makings to do well in acting, modeling and music. I think he will be one of those rare singers who will be around 30 years from now. A legend in the making. :cool1_tb:
I think 5 years from now, when everyone looks at the idols and success, Dave will be sitting on top.

  • tinawina

He’s such a guy like that, isn’t he? He keeps wearing dirty hats so he doesn’t have to do his hair. He finds like 3 shirts he likes and wear them to death. I bet he keeps buying new packs of underwear to keep from having to do laundry. Yep, a guy.
    :laugh_tb:

ETA: kimberann, you have to get some kind of Cookie Superfan prize or something. Heh. Do your thing, girl.

That would kill me dead, for realz. Add Paul Rudd to the mix. Paul Rudd is love. I’m a huge fan of Judd Apatow, and a small part as one of the gang in an Apatow movie would be the perfect way for DC to break into some acting and do well. I don’t want to see him doing leading man or high drama stuff for a long time. Too early, and too much risk in coming off cheesy. No offense, but I think Daughtry’s TV guest spot was a bit cheese.

THANKS SO MUCH MJ, for coming through. I don’t say it enough. You rock.

Oh, God. Paul Rudd and James Franco. Freaks and Geeks is my .favorite .show.ever. Yup. Cook looks like he just stepped out of one of those films, so I think he could easily step into one. Small role only. Baby steps.

  • templeton

Hilarious. Loved his expressions as Emo Sarah read her poem/song. Hilarious.

  • sunchick

Ditto the thanks to MJ. I forgot to DVR it. Hmm, this show is kinda like an extended Whose Line Is It Anyway bit mixed with the Larry Sanders show. Methinks I shall have to catch it more often. Celebrity blood and constitutional monarchy….Cook, you slay me.

ETA: kimberann, you have to get some kind of Cookie Superfan prize or something. Heh. Do your thing, girl.

Maybe kimberann IS Cook. :ponder_tb: :cheese1_ee: I keed, chica. You should totally write all of David’s press releases though. You kick the RCA PR teams ass. Love it.

  • spencer

“ETA: kimberann, you have to get some kind of Cookie Superfan prize or something.”

    Seriously LMAO!

  • CRB

This was supposed to be comedy. Yowza!

  • Trina

The facial expressions are what really make it :laugh_tb: Everything comedy related he’s done for VH1 has been great. I get so annoyed SNL didn’t use him in a skit. IIRC he said at some point they had planned to but then when McCain was booked for the cameo things got too hectic. Could have been amazing.

CBTM hit #40 on HAC today! :clap_tb:

  • kimberann

Thanks tinawina and sunchick. What can I say, I’m Cookified. :redface_wp: He is so yummy in those beanies.

  • oceana

Re the hats and 3 shirts, there’s a lot to be said for keeping it simple. Less time spent shopping and doing laundry. :)

Freaks and Geeks was a great show. I couldn’t believe they cancelled it.

    Wow! Awesome!

I laughed at David with emo Sarah, the receptionist. Those lyrics? LOL.

I LMAO’d at that part. “Are you my hunter? Happy Birthday.” SO F-ING RANDOM, I love it. Hilariously, I’d really love to hear DC set those psycho lyrics to music– I mean it’ll probably actually sound good, haha. I mean, the emo/depressing/stalker vibe isn’t not too far from what DC sometimes pulls off– heard Anodyne lately? Stalkery Hello? Hmm… heh, I’d love to see him drop in on a future episode as a follow-up with a fake hit from emo Sarah’s song.

Man I loved this! Thanks for posting.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I agree with Trina on DC’s facial expressions. That’s what made watching this so entertaining. He looked as if he was going to bust into hysterics when that emo chick was reading her poetry. You can’t put a price on that….seriously. :laugh_tb:

He was really a good sport to do this. Hee

  • dcisluv

He is smart, funny and gorgeous.

That’s really all I have to say.

  • cookcricket

I’ll have to say that Lance and the Emo chick make this show! LOL! DC was great! Good job DC!

Emo chick: “I want to order a mug that can have a picture on it, how big of a mug can you make?” or something like that! :laugh_tb: :lol_tb:

Could anyone briefly summarize what happens in the video of the extra takes (from the link Ladymadonna gave)?
View is restricted to the US only (how much do I hate when this happens…). Thanks

  • Ashley19

That was hilarious! Loved the part with the girl giving David the poem. LOL! :laugh_tb:
Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a natural! He needs to do more comedy.
