Update: David Cook is #1 on the Digital Album chart with 58,713 units – The most ever for a debut artist!

From Billboard:

Reigning “American Idol” champion David Cook’s self-titled 19 Recordings/RCA debut arrives at No. 3 with 280,000. That’s more than double the first-week numbers of 2007 champ Jordin Sparks’ self-titled debut, which sold 119,000 copies and has gone on to shift 956,000.

Terrific first week numbers, considering sales are down, according to Billboard, by 32% from the same week last year.

Kirsten has the stats in the Weekly Sales numbers thread HERE. She’ll be adding sales numbers for all the Idols as the day progresses.

Absolutely terrific first week numbers for David Cook. Congratulations, and Kudos!

ETA: Folkfan also has some nice stats re: David. Check them out HERE. David’s debut is the highest for a new artist, so far this year!

    17. Madonna—279,522 (5/7/2008)

Next, in terms of overall sales weeks:
Top Sales Weeks of the Year

    1. Lil Wayne—1,005,545 (6/28/2008)
    2. AC/DC—784,288 (11/8/2008)
    3. Coldplay—721,207 (7/5/2008)
    4. Taylor Swift—592,304 (11/29/2008)
    5. TI—568,383 (10/18/2008)
    6. Jonas Bros.—525,093 (8/30/2008)
    7. Metallica—489,883 (9/27/2008)
    8. Beyonce—rounded 482,000 (12/6/2008)
    9. Mariah Carey—462,971 (5/3/2008)
    10. Usher—442,930 (6/14/2008)
    11. Jack Johnson—374,619 (2/23/2008)
    12. Miley Cyrus—371,352 (8/9/2008)
    13. Metallica—337,005 (10/4/2008)
    14. Nickelback—rounded 326,000 (12/6/2008)
    15. Sugarland—313,624 (8/9/2008)
    16. Lil Wayne—308,505 (7/5/2008)
    17. HSM3—296,842 (11/8/2008)
    18. David Cook—rounded 280,000 (12/6/2008)
    19. Madonna—279,522 (5/7/2008)

N.B. This is year-to-date, for Billboard issues that cover sales in calendar year 2008. So, there are 5 more weeks during which a record’s sales could surpass DCTR. In fact, HDD predicts that both Kanye West and GnR will have higher sales this upcoming week. Also note that DCTRà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s number is rounded. When we have a more exact number, it could possibly fall below Madonnaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, whose sales total would also round up to 280,000. However, it appears quite likely that DCTR’s sales will be in the top 20 for debuts and in the top 25 for sales weeks this year. And DC’s debut week is the best for any new artist this year.

  • elisad

Aww, between HSM3 and Madonna? That looks weird. Kidding. I’m (yet again…) adjusting my expectations about sales, seeing predictions about GnR and Killers next week, which makes 280K even more impressive.

  • gingerly

So happy for DC. The highest new artist week this year just about says it all! Thanks FolkFan.

  • sma11ie

Folkfan, that is good stuff, thanks! Did you see my query in the sales thread re: AI winners’ debut sales relative to the season’s ratings/concert sales? Can you take a stab?

  • FolkFan

Um, I suspect that I could try to find the concert stats, but I was thinking that my employer might want me to get some work done first…. [smile]

  • poporange

Congrads to David C ! BTW contrary to belief I like the guy and wish him luck.IT’s just American Idols tendancy this and past years to stemroll lor throw under bus others leaves a bad taste. The Davids ,looks help , but talent got them where are are and both will do well.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

DCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s debut week is the best for any new artist this year.

    Nice….

  • Buderschnookie

I am more and more happy with how RCA is marketing him- he’s being seen in all the right places and peaking right at the exact perfect time.
    Yay Cook and congratulations!

  • john_socal

Damn, does this mean I don’t get Kirsten’s calculator and MJ’s hat :(

  • weareallinnocent

Super, super, super!!! What a way to start the holiday… thanks to all who’ve culled the info for us to celebrate!! Yay!!!

    :drunk_tb:

  • CRB

Good opening number but now he needs some label support to make some huge radio singles. The fact that Tay Tay outsold Cook, and still is considered a punchline to an Idol joke, should be fair warning that things can head into the shitter pretty quickly.

  • gingerly

roflmao CRB…you can do better than that.

  • ghc_mudd

    CRB,

I think “Tay Tay”‘s fanbase had much less potential for growth than David Cook’s.

  • Trina

Plus 19 and RCA actually seem to, well, like Cook.

So proud of my boy! Did you guys see the ET clip from yesterday where he talks about hanging his platinum magic rainbow plaque? He was beaming. Makes me so happy for him.

OMG look at RCA’s press release! (bolding theirs)

David Cook’s Self-Titled Album Debuts at #3 on the Billboard Album Charts
Wednesday November 26, 10:45 am ET

David Cook is #1 on the Digital Album Chart With 58,713 Units – the Most Ever for a Debut Artist

David Cook is the Best Debut From an Idol Winner Since 2006

First Single ‘Light On’ Has Been #1 on the AOL Top 40 Songs Chart for 6 Weeks and is #1 on the ClearChannel On Demand Chart

‘Light On’ is the #1 Gainer at Adult Radio and Debuted as the Breakout Track on this Week’s American Top 40 With Ryan Seacrest

Idol Single ‘The Time of My Life’ Has Been Certified Platinum With Over 1 Million Tracks Sold

NEW YORK, Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ — David Cook enters the Billboard charts at #3 with his self-titled debut album (19 Recordings / RCA Records) selling 279,578 units. The Rob Cavallo produced album is also the #1 album on the digital album chart and is the best debut from an American Idol winner since 2006.

“Light On”, the first single from the album, has been dominating the AOL Top 40 Songs chart at #1 for the past 6 weeks and is currently #1 on the ClearChannel On Demand Chart. It was also the #1 gainer at adult radio and debuted as the breakout track on this week’s American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest. In late September “Light On” premiered on AOL Music’s pop culture news site, PopEater.com, receiving over 1 million plays in less than week.

The ClearChannel premiere of the Wayne Isham directed “Light On” video became their best performing video premiere ahead of Linkin Park, The Eagles and Ne-Yo.

American Idol single “The Time Of My Life” (which is featured as a bonus track on David Cook) has reached platinum status with over 1 million tracks sold.

I have tears in my eyes.

  • john_socal

    Awesome find Trina!

  • gingerly

Thanks Trina! So much great stuff there. I’m just so freaking happy and proud of my boy!

  • weareallinnocent

Wow, just wow at that Press Release!!!! Thanks Trina!

(Although, even I (a diehard wordnerd) must chuckle a tad at the spin on best debut from an Idol Winner since, uh, 2006… That only really says he debuted better than Jordin! LOL)

  • elisad

    ^Yeah, LOL.

Wow, that’s some press release. I’m glad he sold so many digitally, it’s very…Coldplay.

  • NickDaddyo

Not bad at all, David! Any other week he would’ve been #1 with those numbers. Great start, but now the real work begins…

  • sma11ie

    DC’s 279,578 beat Madonna’s 279,522. Nice!

Also how cool that DC had the most ever digital album sales of a debut artist– not just this year, but *ever*! Another feather in his cap. And DC still beat Nickelback on digital sales, despite the latter’s album going on sale for $3.99 on Amazon last week. Gotta say though, RCA should hire Folkfan to help contribute to these press releases. Would’ve been fun to see something like “best debut of a new artist in 2008″ thrown in there as well :).

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

CRB, true, and you can spin this anyway you want. Looking at most of the comments, it’s gonna fall on deaf ears today! My take is that Cook is well in the zone, and is in a genre that sells AND gets radio play, namely Rock and HAC. Plus LO is already climbing Top40 quite nicely now. It was just a slow starter and did exactly what David’s label wanted. Their plan was to get something out there for him to sing on promotion for the album. This is a typical rock/pop scenario where the first single off the album isn’t necessarily the blockbuster. 19/RCA took that path because David already had a platinum, #1-on-AC hit in TOML. Their strategy was a calculated risk and it’s paying off. Trust me, RCA is behind David 100% and their promotion of the album proves it. 19 is run by Simon Fuller, who happens to personally manage David.

edit: Seriously Scott, if you don’t read my guidelines and follow them, I’ll ban you.

  • FolkFan

I’ve never got a shoutout in the top post before. Thanks, MJ!

Query: Does DCTR having the #1 in digital sales this week count as him getting another billboard #1?

  • tinawina

The fact that Tay Tay outsold Cook, and still is considered a punchline to an Idol joke, should be fair warning that things can head into the shitter pretty quickly.

He’s not Taylor. Taylor wasn’t remotely radio friendly and his album was not in a big selling genre. Even if there is a drop off in album sales (and that’s a big if) it will be nothing like Taylor’s. All they will do is swicth to another single.

Anyway, congrats Cook!!!!!!! He did phenomenal. Great numbers this week!

  • Kirsten

Query: Does DCTR having the #1 in digital sales this week count as him getting another billboard #1?

Yes. Billboard has Digital Albums charts. Hopefully, Fred will have some great stats for us tomorrow.

    Damn, does this mean I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get Kirstenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s calculator and MJà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hat :(

Sorry john. Never bet against MJ’s hat. Just be glad you still have your $20 (though I did LOL that David Hernandez is releasing a CD after we discussed it last week).

    I like good sales news.

  • SamIAm

    Loading comment…

so who is this TAY TAY???

    Just saying lol

Since albums were selling so much better then you really canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t compare , however we could compare what Kirsten says DC would have sold at that same time right?? I am thinking that would be considerably different numbers , am I right??

  • IdolFanatic

Congrats to Cookie! Impressive first week! :)

Man, I have to say that the list of Idol first week album sales is a real eye opener. It shows that longevity is far more important than opening week sales. I’m thrilled both Davids have a great beginnings and I can only hope that both will continue at a steady pace. I’m not going to count my chickens just yet. I don’t think very many Idol fans would have guessed that Ruben, Clay, Bo or Taylor (well Taylor’s debatable, but I’m referring more to their Idol fanbases) would’ve dropped off as quickly as they did. On the other hand, Jordin’s been building her momentum slow and steady for the past year, and she’s definitely proved me and a lot of others wrong on her staying power. If I wasn’t a fan of Idol, I would’ve assumed her album would’ve been certfiied platinum a long time ago by how much I hear her on the radio and how well her videos have done.

  • Michelle

One hell of an opening week, and one hell of a press release! GO DAVID!!!

Best new artist debut of 2008 so far? Yesss! Best digital debut evar? Woohooo!!!

And Rainbow went platinum just in time to squeeze its way into the press release, lol.

Hey, they forgot one more #1 — #1 debut on VH1 countdown :D A minor oversight but hey a lot of frenzied clicking went into that!

Did you guys see the ET clip from yesterday where he talks about hanging his platinum magic rainbow plaque? He was beaming.

Off to watch that! He should be proud, he’s the main reason that song went platinum imo.

  • sunchick

Yeah, Cook! Welcome to the big show, the major leagues, baby! (Thought a sports analogy seemed appropriate for our most sports minded Idol to date, especially after seeing Cook hit that mid court shot in the AOL making of Light On thingy. That was crazy like whoa.) One step closer to scoring a second album with the EEB somewhere down the line, which is my major concern, being a selfish fan who’s in it for the music. Okay, and maybe the live concert smokin hottness.

And DC still beat Nickelback on digital sales, despite the latterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album going on sale for $3.99 on Amazon last week.

Holy crap, I didn’t realize that until you pointed it out. Nickleback also had that special Ticketmaster offer with an iTunes purchase.

I find comparisons to season 5 numbers to be a bit wonky these days as it is widely considered the zenith of the pop culture zeitgeist that was AI. Which always cracks me up because it was the only season that I didn’t bother to watch. I am so not a good representative of mainstream America.

weareallinnocent I’ve been meaning to tell you I dig your user ID. Every time some music critic takes a pot shot at Cookie’s love for OLP it’s like a tiny dagger to my OLP loving heart.

  • Dr. Tracey

WOW! That’s awesome, congratulations to David……….knew he would do it. :biggrin_wp:

  • FolkFan

Sunchick, you consistently crack me up. Just something that had to be said.

  • forlife

Best winner debut since 2006. So he did better than Jordin? Good numbers. I’m sure he will do ok with Black Friday as well. I wonder if RCA is going to keep heaping on the promo? It seems to be working well so far. :wink1_tb:

  • john_socal

Just be glad you still have your $20

I’d be happy to pay off the bet. Just have mj send me your paypal info or something. You are my new goddess of sales numbers. Percocet be damned to an eternal life with Clive…

  • Trina

Just as I was getting out of my car after finishing my lunch break LO came on Z100 and I SHRIEKED out loud. I feel so pathetic LOL

He does have a bit more promo coming up. He taped Ellen yesterday to air on 12/1, he has the Rockefeller tree lighting on 12/3, the Disney parade on Xmas and apparently when he was at Regis & Kelly he performed after the taping Life on the Moon to air when R & K goes on Xmas break.

First live performance of Life on the Moon? Awesome. Do you know when that will air?

I keep wondering when Jimmy Kimmel will have him on. He seemed to enjoy having him on for an interview back during the NBA championships….

  • elisad

apparently when he was at Regis & Kelly he performed after the taping Life on the Moon to air when R & K goes on Xmas break.

What? I didn’t know that. Awesome. The little bit of LOTM they played at AMA pre-show sounded epic.

Re: Regis & Kelly and LOTM, from a poster at the WN home:

    Thursday November 27
    Friday November 28th
    Friday December 5th
    Friday December 19
Monday Decemebr 22 through January 2

As these are upcoming days that the show will not be LIVE due to holidays, etc.

I’m sure the closer it gets, the date will be more concrete.

  • daenarys

-#1 on Itunes on opening day (i’m convinced it was the donuts that did it – good karma and all that!)
-LO vid makes #1 debut on vh1
-LO bounding up the HAC chart
-AMAs! Red Carpet performance – that’s a first. Fans got to hang out and discuss his fruit affiliations. Apparently he’s a watermelon and Neal is a grapefruit. After burning up the stage with LO and Declaration, he sang Jingle Bells at the red carpet. With a ukelele. With Guilermo LMAO! O David. Fans given tix to show (and I cried and cried LOL). He got to meet up with Archie – hey that was a highlight for me, though I wish we coulda seen that big ole hugfest backstage. Miss seeing Cookie’s bear hugs! AND they gave him a spot introducing Taylor Swift. Like they hadn’t already given him enough to do. He probably managed to squick out of the backup dancing request (they saw his potential in the group numbers on AI)
-did I mention he looked aMAzing? uh-uh
-He gives a ton of controversial interviews:

    -Prop 8
-amazed that there are people who hate his beard (he wuvs that beard. So apparently it’s ok to hate his singing, but not his beard. LOL)
-confesses that Archie knows of his seekrit nailbiting habit (We’re shocked! We never noticed, unh-unh – and we’re all sticking to that story, right?)
    -brags that he’s a bad a s s….at baking cakes…
-already planning Another Idol Record Two And A Half Stars LOL
-his favourite Thanksgiving dish is…noodles (What?! Why, the nerve…now the turkey will be hurt and have a panty-throwing meltdown)
-spills the beans on his mom – she loves Barbasol. Aww, NO! That’s my sexy song, don’t drag mommie into it and ruin my fantasy LMAO
-admits that nasty comments from total strangers can sometimes hurt his heart
-to Kyle: you’re my date, b****! for the AMAs (tm Janus at DCO)

-and oh, he sells 280,000 records.

What a Davember to remember. I’m rhyming. I better stop now.

Yes! I’ve been chanting to myself all morning “at least 200k, at least 200k”…glad to see that he exceeded our expectations! Go DC!

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be happy to pay off the bet. Just have mj send me your paypal info or something.

No. No. Keep your $20. I wasn’t going to send you $20 if you were correct.

If you factor CD sales are down 24 percent from last year at this time, percentage wise, Cook would rank third after Ruben, just based on one year’s drop. I’m impressed! I also think it’s significant that he did so much better than Jordin the first week out. She’s gone on to sell nearly a million in a year; Cook ought to do that and more. Tough competition, too – Beyonce and Nickelback!

  • Kirsten

From the same week last year (week-to-week comparison), albums sales were down 32%. As of two weeks ago, sales for the entire year were down 12.6%.As of the end of the third quarter, Rock album sales were down 4%. So many stats.

  • CRB

CRB, true, and you can spin this anyway you want.

It’ s not about spin, it is a marathon not a dash. And getting the music out on radio is what ultimately will move the units. That being said, Cook is in a great position to have a huge second week with Black Friday coming up in a couple of days.

I remember that Daughtry had the $5.99 deal at Best Buy for Black Friday and doing something like that with Cook debut might be enough to get him very close to Gold on the second week. I still think a lot of people prefer a physical CD to the digital download, despite revolution that has taken place.

  • gigglesmo3

cruzceleste It was a question asked in Cook’s AOL sessions:

AOL: So what would ‘Archie’ say is something about you fans might not know?

David: I bite my fingernails. It’s pretty gnarly. I chew them down.

  • FolkFan

I think that it’s a reference to an interview (maybe in the AOL Sessions) that one thing that people probably don’t know about him was that he bites his fingernails. To which the proper response was, um, wasn’t that OBVIOUS?

  • tinawina

Yeah, if they can keep it to a 50% second week drop off he will be past the 400,000 mark. I wonder if they are gonna do any special pricing anywhere? It will be interesting to see.

  • CathyMK

I’ve seen the cake/cupcake baking mentioned a couple of times now- when/where did he say that? I can’t miss a Cookie baking reference!

And I’ve been wondering- will all of the usual numbers be released as usual tomorrow, since it’s a holiday? Can’t wait to see more amazing stats.

Just wanted to add my Woots :clap_tb: and Yays :thumbup_tb: at DC’s sales numbers. I am beyond excited and happy for him. Here’s hoping that next week’s sales will be just as awesome. He’s David Cook! He always surpasses expectations!! :king_tb:

  • Garnetstar

Awesome David. Lovin the record myself so glad to see others agree. I can’t wait to see him sing these songs live. I am jonesing for a live A Daily AntheM. As well as many others.

Daenarys” -the Little Rainbow That Could goes platinum. Hugz my happy song.”

Speaking of the Rainbow, and another DC record for the day:

David Cook’s reign on the Adult Contemporary chart with “The Time of My Life” (19/RCA) has gone into double digits, making him one of 15 solo male artists to rule this survey for 10 weeks or more since the chart began in 1961.

Cook is the only male artist to have a song advance to No. 1 on the AC chart in 2008. The last song by a solo male to top this survey was Josh Groban’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” which began a three-week stay on the throne the week of Dec. 22, 2007.

Impressive – no matter how you look at it.

  • FolkFan

SashaB, thank you for that link. I had wondered when Chart Beat would pop up. I find it irksome that Fred Bronson insists on focusing on DC and DA’s relative chart positions, without taking into accounts differences in the chart weeks that their products debuted. I guess he is a chart guy and wants to focus on chart positions, though, so maybe that should not be too surprising.

In any event, DC has another #1 on the billboard charts, and Magic Rainbow’s reign on AC is even more impressive than we’d realized. Which is cool.

  • DBfan

I remember that Daughtry had the $5.99 deal at Best Buy for Black Friday

That NEVER happened. The Daughtry CD did not sell for lower than $9.99 in 2006. And it’s unlikely for RCA to do it for the 2nd week of a debut.

  • sma11ie

Amazon’s having a huge music sale for black Friday that’s already started and includes a ton of recent releases both for CDs and MP3s, but DC isn’t included in the price slashes. (Pretty great sale– use MJ’s link if you take advantage). Also, based on the few black Friday ads I’ve seen, I haven’t seen the DC’s record slashed anywhere. I saw a couple ads of it on “sale” for 9.99/9.98, but that’s not really a sale compared to the 7.99, 6.99 and lower prices for some other new releases that I remember seeing (Taylor Swift, Beyonce among them, I think).

And so, just like he crashed into my living room on TV during Idol, David Cook crashes into…EVERYTHING, it sounds like, this month. Just WOW. YAY! YIPPEE! I am thrilled, absolutely ecstatic, for him. I love this record more each time I listen to it. That would be mumbly-mumbly times so far, starting whenever it was up for listening on iheartmusic and continuing with my own lovely CD. And download. Had to get those exclusive tracks, ya know. Gawd. It is indeed a roller coaster ride. And last night, I was exhausted after listening and cried myself to sleep…OK getting too fangirly now. I just lurv him and his music and his band and and and I’m out of words. Oh wait – THANK YOU, David Cook, for sharing, for everything. And damn you and the Magic Rainbows and Avalanches and Lies and the Barbasol and the Permanence and the anthems…you know what I mean.

Way to Go David! What an accomplishment! Thank you for the article Sasha.

He can now add the above to his list which also includes this:

“The seventh season winner of the popular TV series rewrites chart history in a number of ways this week. Those 11 charted songs on the Hot 100 give Cook the highest number of titles on the survey in a single week since the Beatles placed 14 songs on the list in 1964″

  • Lisa

The fact that Tay Tay outsold Cook, and still is considered a punchline to an Idol joke, should be fair warning that things can head into the shitter pretty quickly.

I was a big Taylor fan and even I will say Taylor’s cd sucked bigtime a$$. The sucky cd is what hurt Taylor for the most part.

David Cook’s cd is pretty dang much awesome. I can’t remember the last time I bought a cd where I loved multiple songs. IMHO there are several hits on DC’s.

  • Lisa

19 is run by Simon Fuller, who happens to personally manage David.

I had no idea Fuller personally managed David. Wow.

WHAT?! When did this info come out? I feel so out of the loop this week because I don’t have as much access to the net as usual.

I am so. glad. that I am going to actually be here during Christmas! Gonna talk to my Disney family and friends tonight! :D

Anyway, YAY at sales numbers!! Congrats Cook and all my fellow fans. :) And WOW at that press release. Good stuff.

Sirius1 radio interview. Can’t remember the whole question, but he mentions that since both he and his girlfriend have busy schedules, they tend to stay in, have dinners, and lately he tried baking (whereupon I spat coffee at my laptop). That’s when he described himself as a bad a s s (in a whisper LOL).

Re Magic Rainbow – I feel vindicated in being a total of maybe 5 people who FLOVE that song right out of the gate. We were NOT insane. Heehee.

  • ShariG

I’m with you daenarys, maybe number four, who loved Magic Rainbow from the first minute I heard it and still love it. Of course now I also love Declaration, Lie, Avalanche, Permanent, Come Back to Me, Barbasol, Mr. Sensitive, I Did it For You, etc., etc., too. Congratulations to David Cook for a fantastic debut album with multiple hit songs. Can’t wait for the tour, and for the love of God, please release a new single soon.

I’ve heard that the only other Idols that Fuller personally manages are Daughtry and Carrie. I’m not sure if that’s true but it’s pretty impressive that he’s personally managing DC.

And — focusing on the chart positions is silly, when it’s obvious that DC had a much tougher week with more competition than DA did. What place would DA have been in this past week with 183,000 sales? Not #2 for sure. The chart position is relative to who else is competing that week, so it’s like comparing apples to oranges to compare one week to another.

  • oceana

    Good luck to them all.

I’m a little late in the conversation but wanted to say I’m happy for DC. I did buy his cd through iTunes on Fri. because Walmart didn’t have it on sale and I could finish it off for $9 because I already had his single. I’ve heard the first few songs and liked them. I think it should do well.
