Check out this preview of tonight’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, featuring David Cook.

David assists Ty Pennington and the crew to build a new house for the Cowan family. In the preview, you meet their daughter Kori, who suffers from a congenital blood disorder. Mold in the house exacerbates her symptoms, which includes polyps in her sinuses. She raises money for cancer research on behalf of a friend who has cancer.

David’s section of the preview begins at about the 3:23 mark. David’s “Heroes” plays in the background as he describes his involvement in the project to build a new house for the family. David and Kori run an auction to sell bracelets to fund cancer research. Plus David and the crew play soccer, with amusing results.

    Thanks for the thread, MJ.

David Cook really is a mensch. Very eloquent and charming. And those little girls are just so amazing. Have already programmed my DVR and have my box of tissues ready — tonight’s forecast: soggy. Heh.

  • spritely

He makes me guffaw and cry, sometimes at the same time. And, yes, SashaB, those little girls are very dear.

The pillow sewing!! If he ever has his own little girl some day, he’ll probably want to join her Girl Scout Troop, lol.

  • JRB5776

I think it was Cory’s friend that helped with the auction because Cory was on vacation with the family while the house was being built. /nitpick

this 8 min video has already got me in tears….tissues will be a must for sure…. love DC such a great man !

  • jinxx315

Um their house looks kinda of nice to me. It is good that David is helping though. I wonder what they are going to do.

  • Laurie

Ooops – this is a bit more than just a preview! I think I will wait to watch it tonight instead! I love David for his kind heart and charity work, as much as I love his music. There needs to be a David Cook School for how to be a gracious and caring celebrtity! I know I know, many celebrities are gracious and caring. But I think it is so cool that he is young and still so new to the game, yet he focuses on others far more than he focuses on himself or his celebrity. I can’t wait to see the show and what David continues to do to give back.

  • Laurie

Outwardly, the house did look fine, but I read it was a mold issue, which can be life threatening in some cases.

  • Trina

I’m going to be such a mess tonight. Love his big heart.

And my god my other boyfriend Ty calling him a platinum rockstar! SWOON!

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

Thanks for the reminder, mj! I don’t usually watch this show, so I’ll be sure to DVR it tonight. :)

David is so down to earth and sincere. I love him so for who he is.

” If he ever has his own little girl some day, He’ll probably want to join her Girl Scout Troop, lol.”

Awww – I bet he will want to do that! That dude is going to be a great daddy one day.

  • tierbee

Well, if I can’t make it through *that* without sniffling… I’m doomed. I’m going to watch it downstairs all by myself with my box of tissues for sure. Sigh, I just love him. Cookie playing soccer in galoshes made me laugh.

Outwardly, the house did look fine, but I read it was a mold issue, which can be life threatening in some cases.

Yeah, there sure seemed to be some nasty dust and junk coming out of that house as they demolished it.

  • s3rious

I can hear Heroes! yay :D

” All these Heroes come and go, You’re still standing ! “

  • fadetowhite

Thanks to the Brazillian Word Nerds for posting this so that we can all see it.

He certainly is looking mighty fine on that segment. And I do love the fact that he’s helping out a family that he already had a connection with.

  • spritely

he’s helping out a family that he already had a connection with.

I loved that part when I first found out about it. I don’t mind at ALL when his peeps search out promo opps for him, of course, but it’s especially nice that this particular opportunity came from within his own life, and that none of us knew about it before.

  • maturin

That poor kid, I can’t believe going through so many surgeries that young. And then finding the energy and affection to worry about other sick kids. It may be just a reality TV show, but glad they could make something really good happen for that family. Years of sickness tend to take a big chunk out of a family’s financial and emotional well-being, especially with a couple of kids.

Cook is a pretty great guy.

  • luval

Used to watch this show all the time until I heard about the post/show issues..Owners can’t afford to pay the utilities, taxes, etc.on these McMansions after the cameras go away. I think a couple of the episodes in the past this stuff was covered for maybe one year or something, but after that…fuggetabout it.

I’ll probably take a peak tonight only because DC is on.

  • ladymadonna

I loved the scene of David in the craft corner sewing and beading with those little girls. They seem pretty skeptical that they can sell those pillows for $1000, but Dave seemed pretty confident that he could convince folks to lay down some money for a good cause. Plenty of experience over the past year I guess.

This is going to be so warm and fuzzy I can’t stand it.

  • Sassycatz

I hear ya. But I noticed lately that they’ve been downsizing their builds, making them more realistic to the site and the family. It’s less exciting to the viewing audience, not seeing game rooms and baseball diamonds in the backyard, but I gotta believe that the end product is ultimately more manageable for the family. In this case, it looks like they had some nice square footage starting out. It’s just the house was “sick,” and I don’t mean that in a ghetto slang, good way. So, just keeping to what they had but making it healthy seems the way to go. I hope that’s what happened.

  • standtotheright

luval, I’ve mentioned this before, but EMHE knows they’ve gotten bad PR for the post show issues, so they’ve made some changes.

More fundraising for the family to handle their bills, more “green energy” installations to reduce utility costs, the occasional mortgage payoff, etc.

I don’t think it’s the most effective strategy, and I don’t think that they are the best organization out there, but I think they have tried to deal with some of the fallout of post-show finances, if only in their own self-interest.

I think another avenue they haven’t explored is a sponorship slot given to a financial advisory firm, and a free consulting session granted to all the families. Maybe there’s a stigma there, but to me it’s no different from being a lottery winner.

  • luval

thanks guys. Glad to hear this show is adjusting to the times.

  • cookmerized

Adorable. Such a great guy. I’m kinda bummed I watched this, though, because it seemed like all the segments with cookie. I hope not. Once again, i’m reminded why I’m a fan. It’s not only about the music, is it?

  • offside

Kori really is the celebrity of this episode and she is inspiring.
I love how kids just gravitate toward David; he truly has an instant bonding with them.
    The bit at the end where he’s playing soccer is precious;
he is indeed a gem !

  • Keel

What? No comments about the hair yet? What is going on Cook fans (and non-fans)? Where are your priorities? LOL

(Confession: I have now watched this video about 5x. Can’t wait to see the whole thing tonight.)

  • Sydia

Really puts things into perspective when you see the difficulties so many people go through. That family is adorable…so is Cook. What a sweetie. He looks so cute playing soccer…hard to believe how athletic he was in high school…ay Cookie. Gotta love him…

  • fadetowhite

Keel – I thought the hair was OK: certainly not distracting and that’s a plus! :lol

  • CathyMK

So much sweetness in that 8 minutes. Heroes is a perfect song for the occasion. They’re all heroes. I think Kleenex is going to make a lot of money from all of us tonight!

I’ve mentioned this before, but EMHE knows they’ve gotten bad PR for the post show issues, so they’ve made some changes.

I’m really glad to hear this, and that they’re down-sizing the houses to fit the scale of their neighborhoods more. They did a house that’s in my town a couple of years ago, and while it was fantastic and the family deserved the help, they built a 4 thousand sq. foot monstrosity in a modest neighborhood of 1800-2,000 sq. ft. houses. The town did talk about keeping her taxes affordable, and the show helped pay for the mom to finish college, but I’ve always wondered how she would manage the upkeep on the house as a single mother with 4 or 5 kids, some of whom are HIV positive. I can tell you from personal experience, medical bills can be a huge drain on a family, even with a decent income and good health insurance. I also wonder what happens when the owners try to sell those houses that are totally out of proportion with their surroundings. But, the show and the helpers have their hearts in the rights places, so hopefully they’re working more of those issues out.

  • MollyAnnMay

Those little girls make me want to get off my butt and do something. How cool are they?

What? No comments about the hair yet? What is going on Cook fans (and non-fans)? Where are your priorities?

    LOL! Here you go, Keel:

    Hair: D-

    Head: A+

    Voice: A++

    Heart: A+++

    Overall Score: A+

    ::dusts hands::

ETA: I’ve never seen this show before but it’s kind of startling that they previously approached things in such an impractical and unrealistic way, but maybe that was a reflection of the times — it seems a lot of people had unrealistic expectations about real estate and home ownership not that long ago. It sounds like they are acknowledging current realities, so that makes me feel a bit better about the whole thing. I love the idea that they appear to involve the community as well. That’s important.

  • wellhesback

MollyAnnMay – I love your Cook scoring system! There are so many things about this guy to love that I can easily overlook the tragic hair.

Thanks for this thread MJ. I’ll be watching tonight.

  • MollyAnnMay

There are so many things about this guy to love that I can easily overlook the tragic hair.

wellhesback, can you imagine if along with all the rest he actually had good hair? Or even halfway decent hair?

    ::imagines it::

    ::faints::

  • tierbee

wellhesback, can you imagine if along with all the rest he actually had good hair? Or even halfway decent hair?

But what would we snark about?!

I am so ready to bawl. I mean, this show always makes me cry, but… Teary-eyed Cookie will just kill me even more. And I don’t want to admit how many times I’ve watched the darn video. Gah, help!

  • MollyAnnMay

But what would we snark about?!

I’m sure we’d have no trouble finding something. ;-)

For example, what about his fitness? He really was pretty winded after those few minutes of soccer. He was hobbled by the silly boots and the face plant at the end was funny, but no joke, he was breathing hard during that interview.

I have no idea if he’d seen Springsteen in concert before last Fall, but I’m glad he did and I’m glad it made such a big impression on him. I may not need David to do a typical Bruce-style 3 (or in the old days 4) hour marathon (those wear me out just being in the audience), but I would love to see Dave and the guys routinely do a proper 2 hour show. Not that I’m greedy or anything.

  • tierbee

but I would love to see Dave and the guys routinely do a proper 2 hour show

Me too! His shows were over way too soon – compliment to him, I guess, that I never want them to end :)

Well, he’s training now for Race for Hope… maybe he’ll be ready to play more soccer. Soccer’s tough, lots of running, trying to practice with the teams I coach about kills me. It’s a good wake up call to get my butt on the treadmill! My kids got a kick out of that video, though now of course they want to play soccer with David Cook.

  • Pam

I think there will indeed be a lot of tears tonight. To hear Cory’s story and then hear about what she is doing to help cancer victims is just awe inspiring. She is a real hero herself.

I think I can overlook Dave’s hair. hee

  • Sassycatz

I’m sure this is part of the reason, but having watched this show in “the old days,” I got the impression they were just trying to blow it out of the water. They were making a TV show, so they were going to give these families these extravagant homes that would dazzle the home audience. It was like “Queen for a Day!” And sure, it was fun to see all the wonderful things they could do, but in the long run, it didn’t serve the families well.

  • aga

Love to see that David is on TV rather than interview and singing this time. Hair is not bad at all in this clip.

Have you ever played soccer? I have…against 13 year old girls when the other team didn’t show up we decided to do parents against the girls (and these girls won city and district).. It outweighs football and baseball by far in terms of fitness. Basketball could hold a close second, but they still have those stupid TV timeouts.

ETA: breathing outweighs fitness in terms of baseball, I just have to say…

  • MollyAnnMay

they want to play soccer with David Cook

Doesn’t everyone? YDOSMV (Your Definition Of “Soccer” May Vary)

    Have you ever played soccer?

LOL No, because I don’t want to die. But I’m not a 27 year old guy, either. ;-)

And I absolutely agree it demands more fitness than anything else I can think of — maybe only competitive cross country skiing or long distance running or speed skating demand more continuous aerobic activity, but not much else does. I certainly can’t think of another team sport that is as grueling, and soccer players are pretty darn fit. Yum.

The good thing is, I don’t need Dave to be fit enough to play soccer, just fit enough to play and sing for me (oh fine, and other people) for more than a dozen songs!

(Disclaimer #1: I realize the length of his sets may have had as much to do with venue/contract demands as with any desire on his part to put a limit their length, so truly, I’m fine with that.

Disclaimer #2: I *really* don’t want him to blow out his voice, so whatever he needs to do to keep *it* fit is also fine by me.)

  • MollyAnnMay

Wow, I am making very efficient use of the shallow end of the pool today…

  • tierbee

I certainly can’t think of another team sport that is as grueling, and soccer players are pretty darn fit.

I played goalie to avoid running… except I forgot about the part where the goalie gets the crap beat out of them. I think I broke every finger playing high school/college ball. Not to mention kick to the back, concussion, black eyes, and so on. Maybe I should have just sucked it up and done the running.

    <<>>
I like what soccer does for guys’ butts, lol.

Doesn’t everyone? YDOSMV (Your Definition Of “Soccer” May Vary)

LOL! Enabler… here I was trying to behave. Meanwhile I’m thinking… I *do* coach, and if he ever wants a soccer trainer… I’m there, dude. I might even behave myself.

  • progression

they want to play soccer with David Cook

*dying* Also, extra bonus points for the Cook scoring system MollyAnnMay

I was involved for many years with an organization that provided grants for low income housing, and the biggest challenge for sure is providing the support the families need to stay in their new housing over the long term. There are typically so many other issues these families are facing, and housing is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s nice to see the show is learning a bit more about the challenges as it goes along. And hurray to David for getting involved in such a worthwhile cause.

Side note: David Cook making beaded pillows with little girls is never going to not be adorably funny. What a good sport he is.

  • tierbee

Side note: David Cook making beaded pillows with little girls is never going to not be adorably funny. What a good sport he is.

I loved that… so cute. He really is going to be such a good daddy someday. If he has a little girl he’s going to be toast, she’s going to wrap him around her little finger :)

  • seriously

Well, about soccer. It wears me out. I’ve played like once a week at my local YMCA. I’m usually goalie because I can’t run. If I was in golashes I wouldn’t have even tried. So kudos to Cook for even trying.

  • archie17

I’m not a fan of Cook’s music, but he and Archie are great friends and I think he’s a stand-up guy. I think it’s great that he’s doing this, and I look forward to watching him in exactly 15 minutes!

Also, EHM came to my town this summer. We watched the episode a few months ago, along with some details from the news crew. The house is much smaller than on TV. Funny what the camera angles do. Most of the scenes were “as it happened”, but some took several takes. A stagecoach carrying the family down the street took 10 seconds on TV, but half a day to film. As the “guest”, Ashley Tisdale arrived a few days late. She was supposed to be filmed putting up drywall, but it was already done. So EHM literally tore down the drywall just so they could film Ashley working on it. A few interesting tidbits…

    Have fun watching…it’s time!

  • JRB5776

    Well, crap. I’m already verklempt.

  • tierbee

Yay, ready with my tissues – gimme Cookie!

  • sleepyinsomniac

Awwww darn, thanks for putting that image in my head. Now I can’t get the thought of David and his would-be (or in this case could be) little girl out of my head. This is the first time I could say I’m getting misty-eyed over an imaginary daddy and daughter relationship.

  • seriously

Hehe archie17! I’m a fan of Cook and Archie. Just recently got Archie’s CD, and love it. Thats what I love about these two guys. They give back so much.

  • Sassycatz

Are any of you watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition? Must get out the tissues.

  • seriously

Wow… that hardhat is like 1 million sizes too small.

  • May

I’m watching it now Sassycatz. Cory is such a great (and adorable) kid. And we’re getting even more Cook coverage than I expected!!!

  • Pam

I am. Cory is amazing girl. I’m so happy she got a chance to meet Dave and to get this big reward for her and her family for all they have done for their community. :)

  • seriously

Also that house was 1 million times worse than I thought.

  • tierbee

I love Kori. I hope my son is inspired.

  • Fergie

I’m crying AND smiling. I love that Cook dude and everything he stands for.
This is how you use celebrity. Proud fan here.

  • seriously

I’m still crossing my fingers they show that soccer bit.

  • Pam

OMG that house looks fantastic! It was so amazing to see the looks on the family’s faces when the saw it. That truck was one amazing gift too.

  • sunchick

I’m watching too. Kori is a doll and such a courageous, generous spirit. Well geez. *dabs eyes*

Cookie doing arts and crafts with those precious children in the cancer ward…oh man. I go from being verklempt to LOL at the precariously perched hardhat. If something actually did hit him in the head that hardhat would go flying in a hot second. Oh, and how did he never talk about walking on those stilt thingies in the interviews? To me that looked way cooler than carrying drywall.

I absolutely love the paint color. And I’m so happy for that family. Aww.

  • tierbee

My son said he wants to help people like David Cook :) He did the Race for Hope with me, too, and was really moved by that. *Sniff* I just love that David Cook.

Aw, Landon Donovan – how sweet :)

If they would auction off raw footage of David just working around that house, I know they’d raise money. I wish.

  • seriously

Well that was awesome. Lol at the WTF look he gave at the auction of the Ty picture.

  • Pam

The auctioning off of the picture of Ty and barely getting any bids for it and those funny faces Dave made….Priceless. LOL

aww tierbee, you have an awesome son. You need to give him an extra special hug next time you see him. :)

  • spritely

Well. I guess DC leaves me no choice but to be his fan for life. That was wonderful.

Just finished watching EMHE and Kori is such an inspiration…David Cook LOVE him !

  • SashaB

OMG. I cried like a baby on this whole episode. These girls, Kori and Alyssa, are an inspiration. Tears. And the builder, talking about his dad? More tears. And David talking about Adam and his continuing efforts to fight for a cure? And the kids in the hospital? Tears. GAH.

    Wow. That was wonderful.

eta: I had to laugh at David on the industrial pogo sticks. What a roller coaster. I had a big ole smile through my tears, too.

There’s a website for Kori’s irok foundation mentioned on the show.

The picture gallery has pictures of her with several of the idols (Archie, David, Brooke, Michael J, and Syesha) – the AI concert is where David must have met her before the show. Also pictures from the DC concert the family went to later.

Ty Pennington has tweeted a couple of times about Cook tonight, including this very cute Twitpic:

@iamreallyty: http://twitpic.com/xm0u8 – A big thank you to David for giving his time and talent to our show!

Love, love, loved the show tonight. Kori’s story is incredibly inspirational and I was all kinds of verklempt watching my all-time favorite Idol get so much joy out of giving back. I tend to be a cynical bitch but that dude has an uncommon ability to turn me to mush.
