UPDATENigel Lythgoe just tweeted, “Simon Fuller has been working on the “kiss-off” track for #AmericanIdol this Season. I think it’s great.”

David Cook hasn’t quite revealed what the secret project he’s been working on is, but he just tweeted,

“Was just informed by TPTB that that “extra treat” I worked on last week will air on march 3rd!”

March 3rd will be the night the Top 12/13 will be revealed.

What could this special treat be???1111? EXCITES!

(I hope it’s the American Idol 10 boot song)

Lol, I think that’s almost an official news that David Cook is getting the boot song for season 10.

  • just missed the train

I hope it’s a boot song that goes

Loser, Loser, sorry they had to choose ya
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of booze here
So get out now, we’re sure to forget ya
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya

    And so on…

  • Eyeswideshut2

Well, I’m pretty sure it’s not ‘Come Back to me’ :-)

  • ladymadonna

Considering the infamous Camp-Cook Cone of Silence, that might be as official as word will get barring a press release. Still, it certainly could be just a one-off montage song or something.

I find it hilarious that three years after having the “intestinal fortitude” to peruse the Idol boards during his run, Cook still calls Idol “TPTB.”

  • progression

I’m guessing its for the introduction of the finalists, but I would positively flail for the boot song so I hope I’m wrong. Whatever it is, we better be able to buy it or I’m personally shooting up the Idol Dome (and how sad is it that Cook fans have to beg to buy the guy’s music?).

  • BootStar

All good things come to them that wait. And nobody has been waiting longer than Cook fans! :-)

  • gangreen29

If it is the season long boot song, they really should put the song on the album even if it is a cover. It would make no sense to have that bit of publicity and not attach it to the new record.

  • leome

I really hope it’s the boot song. That would be awesome. But still not convinced. lol either way, there’s something new coming and I’m excited.

  • girlygirl

I’m guessing 99% that it’s the boot song. The only reason I’m not saying 100% is that he says it airs”on” March 3rd — not “starting on” March 3rd, which suggests the possibility of a one-time thing.

I’ll be very excited if it IS the boot song, though

Whatever it is, it doesn’t sound like he’ll be performing it live, though, since he said “airs”

  • sma11ie

Why would they air the boot song on the top 12/13 reveal show? Remember in S7 when they revealed the Top 24 with a photo montage over Daughtry’s What About Now?

Whatever this is, is it crazy to wish for an original song, that Cook somehow, miraculously was able to help cowrite in the short timeframe they had to put it together? Yeah, it’s a pipedream, but I can’t help wishing for new Cook music to be A) original music and B) be Cook cowritten, after he’s spent the last year cowriting upwards of 50 songs?!

Heh, I feel like I shouldn’t be pre-complaining when this is clearly a cool new treat and GOOD news. Ack, something’s wrong with me, clearly. I think I need that new Cook album soon before I totally lose it.

If it is the season long boot song, they really should put the song on the album even if it is a cover. It would make no sense to have that bit of publicity and not attach it to the new record.

Hmm… good point- I mean maybe like a bonus track ala Magic Rainbows. I mean, even though David didn’t seem to want it on his record, ultimately helped sell the record.

  • HappyDaisy

So we’ll let you go, we’ll set you free.
And when you’ve seen what you need to see,
    when you find you –
    good luck, rejectee.

  • djafan

This is the type of treatment we David A fans would’ve liked to have seen. David worked so hard and has had nothing but words of praise for AI. It’s just about full proof.

Though I am excited about the future opportunities he’s speaks of.

I’m happy for Cook fans. Congrats :)

  • Trina

Even if it IS a one time thing I don’t care. How long have we been deprived of new music? And frankly it makes me happy TPTB thought of him for something.

  • Eileen99

LOL, I laughed at Cook’s reference to TPTB, too.

With this last tweet from David, I don’t honestly know how it could be anything but the boot song. I agree they should make it a bonus track on his album for sure, why not? Heartless was a bonus track for Kris and that had everything to do with Idol and nothing whatsoever to do with the rest of the album.

Anyway, congrats to the Cook fans! Awesome for you guys :D

I’m getting excited for S10! Seems like there’s so much to look forward to now.

  • suenigma

Okay, WTF is wrong with me that I am near delirious with the mere possibility that Cook may be singing a cover or a cheesy bootsong on American Idol? I may have a stroke when his actual single and album arrive.

  • Balance

I think the boot song would be too good to be true, but I’ve never wanted to be wrong so badly in my life!

  • tinawina

sma11ie, don’t worry. Even if its a cover of some silly sing that only airs once without ever mentioning his name (worst case scenarios FTW), it is not going to hurt matters any. At the very least it will remind some listeners he exists right around the time he will have new music dropping. That’s never bad!

  • standtotheright

I can’t help wishing for new Cook music to be A) original music and B) be Cook cowritten, after he’s spent the last year cowriting upwards of 50 songs?!

I know, but the comment by one of the studio engineers that it’s a good track “for” him suggests somebody else wrote it. I wouldn’t mind being wrong about that, of course.

I don’t really care if it’s not his own song, since most of them haven’t been. And he seems a bit too eager for it to be that cheesetastic. But I do kind of hope that whatever promotion is involved still gives more prominence to the actual single and album tracks, in whatever manner that can be accomplished.

As for attaching it to the album, he’s basically ruled that out, and I think it’s for the best. Too much PR about making this his baby and being involved with every step in the process for attaching a random cover to make sense. Besides, if it’s supposed to be for charity (which they often are), making it part of a commercial album is problematic.

  • leome

This the type of treatment we David A fans would’ve liked to have seen. David worked so hard and has had nothing but words of praise for AI. It’s just about full proof.

David A and his fans have nothing to complain about AI. They treated him amazingly well and had him on the show singing and promoting his work. And at the end of the day David A didn’t even win. I know some Archie fans expected the show to ignore him when S7 ended but they have been proved wrong many times. :) Really nothing to complain there.

Even if it’s not new music, it will be something something new. The album is coming soon anyway, so I don’t care if it’s an original or not. It’s not going to take too long to get originals.

  • ladymadonna

Why would they air the boot song on the top 12/13 reveal show? Remember in S7 when they revealed the Top 24 with a photo montage over Daughtry’s What About Now?

I think for me the major factor that pushes this in favor of season-long boot song is the fact that they pulled a writer/producer like Matt Squire in to the studio to record something brand new. If it was just going to be a montage song, why not just use something they’ve licensed and not incur the extra production costs? Nothing much surprises me any more with this show though, so who knows.

  • leome

If it was just going to be a montage song, why not just use something they’ve licensed and not incur the extra production costs?

I agree. Something like What ABout Now existed already. I remember that season they also had that Hollywood is not America song or something like that and used it in the semis. But again, it was something that already existed and it was used more than once.
It could be just a montage/one time thing. But why all the trouble if it was just that?
Unless they want to sell it for charity.

  • ri

well i know you poor Cookie fans have been waiting a very long time for something… anything at all, from him, so i’m happy for you. but as an Archie fan in mourning, i wish both of their gorgeous voices were on the boot song, if that turns out to be what it is. but well, that ain’t gona happen. sigh.

  • tinawina

I have to say all the song lyrics posted here so far have been quite funny. Thanks for the chuckles guys!

Archie fan in mourning, i wish both of their gorgeous voices were on the boot song, if that turns out to be what it is. but well, that ain’t gona happen. sigh.

:( Archie will land on his feet eventually. He’s too talented not to. **hugs**

lol Hero would make a good boot song.

  • unidentified

He’s been teasing long enough. It’s about time for him to put out. haha

I don’t care that it isn’t a song he wrote. It will be Cook singing, and I am really looking forward to it. I hope to be able to buy it. That is the main thing for me.

  • gigglesmo3

Didn’t the Boot song for last season start during the semi finals? And since semi-finals is supposedly only 1 week this year, why not have the Season’s boot song start on March 3rd?

I’m 98% sure the cookie treat is the boot song. But whatever it is I’ll be happy with it. I just hope we get to purchase a single & album soon. We NEED new Cook music. Badly.

Cool maybe TPTB will get a clue and give him the boot song. That would be great!

  • superfudge

I can already see it being the boot song. It’ll play right after the final person is shockingly told they didn’t make the top 24. *people who read spoilers know who I’m talking about*

  • Listening

Ok Ok time to analyze all this stuff compile all his tweets and nitpick it a part.

Hey hey! Busy week! Mixing :) and recording an extra treat that you may get to hear on your TV next week. :D

Clarification: I have a busy week AHEAD of mixing and working on something special… which should surface the week after. :)

Was just informed by TPTB that that “extra treat” I worked on last week will air on march 3rd!

So here are my thoughts i’m leaning towards Boot Song b/c…
1)Consider the time frame for the release of the treat when the key portion of AI contestants are eliminated. In the first tweet David thought the treat would be revealed when we find out the top 24 but instead it’s when the top 12 are formed. To me it sounds like someone maybe TPTB said you get the Boot song ergo he surmises it all begins for top 24.
2)Idol loves him he got to do Idol Gives Back and went to Africa, return to sing Permanent and Jumping Jack Flash as well.

If it’s a Boot song there’s still a possibility that it’s not a cover song. I believe Daughtry got the Boot Song and it was their original Home.

But here’s what I find weird why is this all last minute. Somebody recently selected David to do this otherwise it wouldn’t have this quick turn around. I mean a week of recording then the big reveal or at least that was the initial plan and it got pushed back a week which is still pretty quick.

Also not sure who TPTB are is it Idol as many assume could simply be management. But if the TPTB were management what could have occured for them to push a song back a week. It makes more sense that TPTB are Idol at least then the delay seems logical.

Regardless of what it is i’m excited excited EXCITED!

  • gigglesmo3

superfudge The Top 24 reveal is this Thurday. March 3rd is the results show revealing the top 12/13.

  • sma11ie

sma11ie, don’t worry. Even if its a cover of some silly sing that only airs once without ever mentioning his name (worst case scenarios FTW), it is not going to hurt matters any.

My other concern is that March 3rd is right around the time I was hoping we’d get news about David’s lead off single, which I’m 99% sure he cowrote, and consequently, something I care WAY more about than this “treat”, but this “treat” may only (another worst case scenario, heh) serve to muddy the waters when everyone should be focused on pushing the new single… well, if it’s a charity single, then maybe I’ll be appeased…

Ugh, am I really complaining about a treat? I swear, I am not this angsty IRL. I hate David Cook, LMAO.

  • jumpstart

Okay, WTF is wrong with me that I am near delirious with the mere possibility that Cook may be singing a cover or a cheesy bootsong on American Idol? I may have a stroke when his actual single and album arrive.

Whatever it is – it’s catching! I think I might explode!

  • pattycake

Love that he uses blogger terms with the TPTB. I was hoping it was the single, but I’ll take the boot song. Unfortunately, since he just recorded it, sounds like it will be a cover not the single. But I will take whatever form I can get Cookie’s voice. Its been wayyyyyyy to long.

  • Mark

I think Cookie has gotten the boot song, too! Which is cool, because, IMO, he’s relatively due for it and a good candidate.

Here’s a question. Let’s say that, unfortunately, he doesn’t get an original song for the boot song and is stuck with a cover. Any idea what kind of song might be good for both Cook and the boot song?

  • ri

**SUENIGMA that video put me wayyy past verklept, lol. my husband just had to pass me the box of tissues. now you got me wishing they would go on tour together. that’s asking for a lot, i know.

  • incarcerate

I’ve been done with AI for awhile now but looks like I might be watching idol on March 3rd – only for David Cook.

  • Curlin

Well I’m excited! Possible boot song and maybe a single announcement?? Here’s hoping! :)

  • Eyeswideshut2

Top 5 reasons why it’s the boot song (via the interwebz):
#1: Why else spend money for expensive recording
#2: Lack of ‘clarifying’ tweet from David
#3: The Idolblogosphere has picked this up very quickly. Makes me think someone has inside info.
#4: The entire Idolblogosphere thinks so.*
    #5: I wants it.

    * May be a slight exaggeration

  • ri

Archie will land on his feet eventually. He’s too talented not to. **hugs**

gee thanks for the hugs, TINAWINA. i hope “eventually” comes sooner rather than later.

  • standtotheright

My other concern is that March 3rd is right around the time I was hoping we’d get news about David’s lead off single, which I’m 99% sure he cowrote

March 3rd was likely to be early for a single announcement anyway. Those usually lag the album announcements by a couple of weeks, and I wasn’t expecting an album press release until this week at the earliest (at least not once the FF date came down). Any release date in May actually works out really well for that schedule: Announce the album on Tuesday 3/1, highlight the AI song 3/3, and then a week or two later officially announce the single. Boot songs that aren’t singles, as others have said, don’t do much for wider media attention beyond the premiere and the finale performance. So I don’t think a boot song would get in the way of the single if the RCA singles monkeys promote the song appropriately.

  • suenigma

ri. I know right? Sorry. I would bet that the person who put that together is a professional – very moving.

  • Brisblondie

Gah this stupid keyboard keeps deleting everything so I’ll make this fast… I’m still holding on to my high hopes he got the boot song, and that it’s “Straight Ahead” off his preidol solo record Analog Heart.

Because he slyly said “you never know where this will pop up again” when he played it (SA)on tour, I’ve thought it could be the boot song ever since then! And then… he used all caps when he tweeted about the “week AHEAD” regarding the treat. I think he’s known for a long time that it might get used for hte boot song this season, but they had to schedule rerecording it after he finished recording his cd. All very possible, knowing it wouldn’t take long to re record it, especially if he’s had a heads up on this..he could have arranged it long ago.

Plus plus the chorus is perfect:
“So take a minute just to breathe,
and think of everything you wanted,
    but what you got instead.”

That’s my story. :) Yes, farfetched, but hey.

Sorry Archie posters. I feel your pain. I wish the best for your guy, he deserves it. :( *big hugs*

  • Buffynut

It has to be! March 3rd? What else could it be?! I am excited for David. He deserves it and what a great way to start the promo for the album. I have renewed faith in both 19 and RCA! :)

  • Chicagolaw

Yay for David! It has to be the boot song at this point. If it’s not his single, then a cover is really the best bet because it won’t muddy the waters for the actual single release. They really should make it a bonus or hidden track on the album, though. I also think with a boot song he will get 2 AI appearences, but that means they need to get the single out quickly to give that first AI performance a bigger boost.

  • cookbunny

Here’s a question. Let’s say that, unfortunately, he doesn’t get an original song for the boot song and is stuck with a cover. Any idea what kind of song might be good for both Cook and the boot song?

Mark, if, and I do mean IF, it ends up being a cover (please don’t be a cover)…

    Ozzy’s “Mama I’m Coming Home?”

  • Joyed

I am so excited for the new music!:)

If it is the boot song, I think it would probably be a cover since both Carrie’s and Ruben’s boot songs were covers. I’m just fine with that too, because I think the boot song is great for remembering the artist, but not a song that will get wide distribution itself.

Either way, it will just be fun to have a treat to look forward to! Hopefully, the treat will be presented with some album news so as to maximize the attention.

  • Keel

Plus plus the chorus is perfect:
“So take a minute just to breathe,
and think of everything you wanted,
    but what you got instead.”

I sure hope not. Those lyrics were actually weirdly perfect (and prescient) for Cook but he won. It’s kinda mean as a boot song for the bootees though, don’t you think? “Hey contestant who just got your ass handed to you by Idol (and the entire nation who just voted you off)! Remember how you wanted a major label deal from Idol and sacrificed your and your family’s privacy and dignity in the procees? And what did you get instead? A big wad of Suck It apparently! Awesome!” Yeah, I don’t think it’s perfect either.

  • karenc

    Brisblondie:

I’m kind of hoping for Straight Ahead also. He wouldn’t be recording one of his new songs, but I could see him having to re-record one of his older songs if they were going to use it for tv. And it does fit.

  • suenigma

    Hahaha Keel.

I wonder if Sony/RCA negotiated this little opportunity (assuming it is the bootsong) into their breakup with American Idol? It would be very cool if RCA timed their announcenment of his upcoming record/single to coincide with this. They’d be fools not to.

  • Brisblondie

Wow Keel, that’s not how I see it at all. I think of it as…look how far you really made it! The world is your oyster..what are you going to do with this opportunity now? Keep going straight ahead. *shrugs*

  • karenc

Another possibility other than a cover is that it is one of his new songs, but they had to record a shorter version to use on the show.

  • justic

maybee just like with carrie boot song, the song will be up for sale digitally and all profits will go to david’s favorite charity.
if it does happen that way, it’ll be the 2nd time AI is supporting david’s favorite cause (the 1st time being with permanent on AI8 final).

  • karenc

    Brisblondie:

That’s how I see it too. To me it’s a very positive song.

  • Incipit

Aww, Archie fans – your guy will land on his feet, I have no doubt.

But Geebus, this thread is fun to read! Cautious Exuberance and Contained Excitement – harking back to the first album drop – and everyone is still a little wary of TPTB – but Hell’s Bells on a Tomcat!! and WTF!Cook! And like that. Flovin’ it.

David Cook singing anything at all on my TV? I’m there. Yes, I’ll even turn on the dang show, if that’s what it is. I’m easy.

    *snerk*@Myself.

  • standtotheright

Mark, if, and I do mean IF, it ends up being a cover (please don’t be a cover)…

    Ozzy’s “Mama I’m Coming Home?”

That…is actually plausible. I couldn’t think of a damn thing that would make sense for Squire when I thought about the pop-punk sounds he usually produces, but if he did what he did for HIM… Okay, yes, I could see that.

I think of it as…look how far you really made it! The world is your oyster..what are you going to do with this opportunity now? Keep going straight ahead.

But the song is really about diverging from a path that one set out on (like breaking up with one’s band and writing a solo record). What I think made it work for Cook after the win is that everyone acknowledged it was a double-edged sword for him.

That may actually make it work better as a boot song, but it’s still not exactly upbeat.

  • Mtlfan

NICE! I’m looking forward to hear that. Could the treat be his new single?

  • http://emuisemo.pbworks.com eilonwy

NICE! I’m looking forward to hear that. Could the treat be his new single?

Cook referred to it as an “extra,” and he’s been in the studio with somebody other than Serletic this past week, both of which would be odd for a single that’s supposed to be part of a unified album with a single producer (as teasers for DCTR-2 have made a big point of — were we being pointed in a more pop direction, multiple producers would be more likely).

Also, a single would probably stream online, if not released to radio, before being performed on Idol. Cook has enough HAC radio stations chomping to play his next single that it could build momentum up the charts before an Idol performance.

So I think whatever-it-is is genuinely “extra” and perhaps slightly unexpected, since if it’s the Squire-produced song, it was put together pretty last minute.

  • ladymadonna

Here’s a question. Let’s say that, unfortunately, he doesn’t get an original song for the boot song and is stuck with a cover. Any idea what kind of song might be good for both Cook and the boot song?

I doubt it very seriously with the 3OH!3 dude producing, but I keep thinking about how Nigel really, really wanted Cook and Archie to sing Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” as their Top 2 duet until Cook talked them into “Hero” instead. Could we be looking at a Cookian reworking of an S&G classic? I would really hope that the new “relevant” Idol would do a more current song instead (even if not a Cook-penned track), but we know it’s probably going to be a pretty literal take on the “Home” theme no matter who sings it or what song they may choose.

  • k4dc

The anticipation is killing me! Ugh!

Personally, if it IS the boot song, and it was going to be one of David’s older songs, I’d pick “Makeover.”

    What are you looking for?
Are you looking for something more?
    It’s not me
    It’s not me

    *snerk* Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

  • Trina

Crazy thought. Is there an Aerosmith song that would fit the theme of a boot song? By having a popular winner covering one of their songs it would also be a connection to their newest judge and could be pretty cool…

Peeps are actually tweeting him congrats for landing the song..he reads his tweets. I would hope if its NOT the boot song he would gently send out a FYI “its not what you think it is” tweet.

  • fanaround

I think it’s the boot song too, and it’s GREAT news! I don’t think it matters if it’s a cover. Millions will hear his voice on TV every week for months! Plus the album is coming…!

  • lovegoodmusic

I’m coming out of hiding, and I’m going to Guess: It will be a Beatles song, “Two of Us”.

The lyrics are perfect for a boot song, and the word “Home” is in the song. Or maybe the song will be used for one night? I’ll have to tune in if David Cook is singing the boot song. And I really hope he is.

  • karenc

Trina, I can’t think of an Aerosmith song that would fit, except proably I don’t Want to Miss A Thing, and I’m sure it won’t be that. I would think though it is a rock song.

  • Tess

I just don’t understand why this all has to be so hush-hush and secretive. We all knew about Carrie’s boot song…it made the round of media outlets and the word was every where that is was recorded as a single for charity.

If David’s treat is the boot song then congratulations…if it isn’t then there will be some very sad fans who keep getting dissapointed…and at some point over-invested fans who keep getting their toes stepped on have a tendency to rebel. Hope that isn’t the case here ’cause Cook seems way to nice to be put into that position.

  • Trina

Well March 3 is still more than a week away and there’s time for a formal announcement whatever it is. I’m guessing the hush hush is mainly because its not David’s place to say whatever it is but rather TPTB. Frankly I’m shocked hes even said this much.

Trust me, even if it is the boot song there will be some fans disappointed. Its just how this fandom can be.

  • k4dc

Is there an Aerosmith song that would fit the theme of a boot song?

How about “Home Tonight”? It’s not a well-known song, but the lyrics sure fit.
    Now it’s time
To say good night to you
    Now it’s time
    To bid you sweet adieu

And maybe drink a cheer to yesterday
And maybe you’ll drink those tears away

    So baby don’t let go
    Hold on real tight
    ‘Cause I’ll be home tonight
    Tonight

Eh, it was worth a shot…

  • ladymadonna

I just don’t understand why this all has to be so hush-hush and secretive. We all knew about Carrie’s boot song…it made the round of media outlets and the word was every where that is was recorded as a single for charity.

This didn’t jibe with my memory at all so I went back and checked the archives – there were no advance rumors of Carrie’s cover ahead of the press release. There was lots of the usual speculation, including some that one of the tracks from DCTR might be used, or upcoming singles from Daughtry or Jordin’s new albums. But Carrie’s cover of ‘Home Sweet Home’ (including the HSUS charity tie-in) was not announced until March 9th, the same week it debuted on the results show and went for sale at iTunes.

Trust me, even if it is the boot song there will be some fans disappointed. Its just how this fandom can be is.

    Fixed :)

  • Banished

I’m happy for David, but bummed because I was still holding out for Kris to get it!All in good time I hope….

  • Tess

    ladymadonna….

So Carrie didn’t send out little tidbits to her fans that she had a treat for them. It was just a nice straight forward press release, right.

We can speculate all we want but when an idol throws something into the mix the speculation becomes a bit OTT. I know the fans want every little bone…but still sometimes doing and tweeting nothing is the better part of valor.

  • suenigma

Ok this is a really crazy thought, but this tweet from Allison Iraheta 30 minutes ago was interesting:
I know i know. some of you guys wana kick my ass!! but trust me! its gonna b good. cant wait to share what ive been workin on with u guys :)

  • BootStar

I’d be shocked if Allison is going to be involved in the project.

  • Valentin432

I’m partial to Breaking Benjamin Home for Cookie:

I’ve got a little red bow
And I bought it for you
’cause I know you’re not fair
I don’t get it, oh well
    And you color my skin
    And the colors don’t blend
    ’cause I’m gonna get you
    And your little dog too
    There’s a yellow brick road
    That we follow back home
’cause I know you can’t wait
    Your belligerent hate
    There’s no place like home
    There’s no place like home
    Like home

    lol

  • Garnetstar

Not saying that Straight Ahead is the boot song but any qualms regarding the lyrics shouldnt be a factor. This is the show thats most successful boot song is “So Ya Had A Bad Day” And last year the forgettable “Leave Right Now” Snarky and depressing. So yeah IMO Straight Ahead is not that far left field.

  • Valentin432

This song is more lyrics appropriate, Spreingsteen All The Way Home:

I know what it’s like to have failed, baby
With the whole world lookin’ on
I know what it’s like to have soared
And come crashin’ like a drunk on a bar room floor

Now you got no reason to trust me
My confidence is a little rusty
But if you don’t feel like bein’ alone
Baby, I could walk you all the way home

Well now our old fears and failures
    Baby, they do linger
Like the shadow of that ring
    That was on your finger
Those days they’ve come and gone
Baby, I could walk you all the way home

The problem of course is that Cook never really “failed” on idol.

  • standtotheright

I know the fans want every little bone…but still sometimes doing and tweeting nothing is the better part of valor.

That was suggested on DCO, and the point was already made that if anyone involved in the project said anything about working with Cook (and going to a new studio with new engineers makes it awkward to ask for them to keep something perfectly fun and innocuous quiet), then fans finding the tweets would have led to more speculation, not less, because people might have thought it was for the album.

Underwood had just released her last single from CR to radio and was all over the place. Nobody was harassing her for new material every.damn.day. It’s not an equivalent situation.

  • suenigma

Lol. I know Bootstar. Just having fun and going off on some fantastical tangents. A duet would be different though, and generate a ton of buzz.

  • Incipit

I know the fans want every little bone…but still sometimes doing and tweeting nothing is the better part of valor.

Tess, There’s been plenty of saying nothing, and this is a rather scrawny bone – more like puzzle pieces, and many of them coming from other people. However, in my experience, David doesn’t say anything about Idol doings that TPTB haven’t given clearance to say. If this is the Boot Song, and they want to foment even more interest in the March 3rd show by getting DC fans to tune back in and add to their viewer count, can’t say I blame them – it’s a large fandom. It’ll work with me – and I haven’t watched Idol since Season7.

Even if it isn’t, if it’s something else and David wants to give something to his awesomely patient fandom, even that scrawny bone – well, that’s all good too. Advance PR isn’t my job, but I recognize it well enough when it’s doled out, and ‘getting in front of the story’ is a good move, when leaks are inevitable. Saying nothing for too long is not good PR for anyone.

    JMO. Of Course.

  • girlygirl

    Suenigma

Allison is likely just talking about the stuff she’s been working on pretty much ever since she got released from Jive. She has tweeted a few times over the past several weeks saying that she’s have news about her new music in February. Since it’s the end of the month, I think she’s probably just responding to fans asking her about when she’s going to tell us her news. I would be really surprised if it has anything to do with this David Cook project/the AI boot song. I’m guessing she’s going to let us know if she’s signing with another label (but that’s just my guess)

  • Trina

First of all Carrie isn’t on Twitter, so no she didn’t tease fans with anything in advance. Second this fandom has been waiting and waiting for SOMETHING. And David is not the type to blab every little thing. if he jumped the gun a little and wanted to share something with the fans he might be excited about I’m not gonna fault him.

  • leome

This fan loves the teasers and what I see around is people loving the teasers too :)
I don’t see how saying there will be something on that day is bad. I think many actually thank for the heads up. Not everyone wacthes AI or would be ready or expect something that day. Boot song or not, there will be a new song. And that’s good enough and what matters.
Thanks David for the tweets. Much appreciated.

  • shenanigan

In response to whether this news should have been kept on the down low, I agree that we long have had too much silence for my taste. Having a little buzz, a little excitement, finally, is a great thing. Could it be actually a little promotion? Be still my heart!

I cannot believe how ridiculously cheering it is to know that we will hear his voice a week from Thursday on something new, at least a new version. It just helps the day beyond all reason. I’m really thankful for the happy anticipation.

  • sma11ie

Trust me, even if it is the boot song there will be some fans disappointed. Its just how this fandom can be.

Me me me! LOL. I’m prepared to be disappointed regardless of what this turns out to be, lol.

So Carrie didn’t send out little tidbits to her fans that she had a treat for them. It was just a nice straight forward press release, right.

Every artist does stuff like this though, in varying degrees. Carrie teased to her fans last Fall about recording a few duets for other people’s projects that won’t come out until 2011. A couple have surfaced (Loretta Lynn, Randy Travis), but the likes of windmills is STILL, months later, trying to piece together what the rest are. David’s tease is only a month in all, but because it involves Idol, the blogosphere is heightened, I guess.

  • Tess

Don’t get me wrong…I don’t think David tweeting is bad and more power to him for having fun with his fans….I just know that if things don’t turn out to the fandoms liking then there can be hell to pay and I would hate for David to be involved with that.

  • chicksineggz

Assuming David is even talking about the Idol boot song, I think Straight Ahead would be really cool, but I don’t think the lyrics are literal enough for Idol.

  • http://emuisemo.pbworks.com eilonwy

Y’know, I’d be with ya on the “he should anticipate this shit” train except that… I too vividly recall, back when Apple was teasing its “world-changing” announcement last fall, there was a segment of fandom that was sure it was the release of DCTR-2. (It was iTunes getting The Beatles’ catalog, as industry pundits had predicted.) Sometimes fan expectations go far beyond what anybody could anticipate.

Now… since fan chatter at Cook is pretty united on “boot song” and Idol blogs are starting to pick up the rumor as if it were an announcement, I think it has become reasonable to expect that he’d know how people are interpreting his tweet — and that he’d be considering what PR risks he’s taking in not clarifying if it isn’t true.

ETA: And I’m open to considering the position that this Twitter stuff is so ephemeral and so Idol-centric that there are no significant PR risks beyond consternation among the core fans who will buy all future albums regardless.

  • _nyanyanie

okay, first reaction: he mentioned TPTB..
    i kinda LOLed at that!

    anyway, yey!! so excited!!!

  • TwigLA

This is great news if true. I’m sure whatever he does will be beautiful. I guess those white guys with guitars aren’t so bad after all.

  • Garnetstar

I just saw on twitter that VFTW has a photo chop of David as a 4 headed AI WGWG monster. Th other heads of the monster are Lee, Kris and the heir apparent Paul McDonald. Too funny

  • ladymadonna

No worries Tess. Operation Expectation Management is well underway amongst the Cook fans now that he’s made such a sadistic blunder with his tweets. This is now making the Twitter rounds as a possible alternative “treat” since the boot song is simply to much for our fragile hearts to hope for:

Season 7 Top 24 Montage – What About Now?

I could definitely see something like this, though I still think it begs the question of why record something new when they could’ve just as easily licensed something. We shall see.

Personally I think it’s silly to think that the timing of something like this is happenstance or anything less than strategic. Even if it’s just a montage song, it’s certainly being engineered to raise awareness in advance of the album launch. This is not just Dave tweeting randomly or off the cuff.

As long as we’re posting “Top 24″ montages…

Season Eight I realized had a Top 36, so no video.

Season Nine’s was set to Kris Allen’s “Lifetime”:

Thanks cookbunny, I had forgotten about it. That could have been the boot song. I did not care for Will Young.

VFTW has a photo chop of David as a 4 headed AI WGWG monster

Works for this fan of the WGWGs! Maybe we should just crown Paul now, and have the rest compete for runner-up. (j/k) ;)

I hope Dave at least confirms that the “extra treat” will be on AI. I’d hate for it to be on The Office or something while we’re all watching Fox, LOL. I’m so ready for something new to add to my playlists that it almost doesn’t matter what it is.

  • karenc

LOL, I love the 4 headed hydra !!! That could be on next years opening if it happens.

Anyway, the top 24 will be revealed this week, so that’s when the montage will be.

Now, originally they were going to have a wildcard round the week after the top 20 round, I wonder if they are now going right from the top 24 to top 12? And it is the week before that they have the boot montage. Maybe that’s why he had to be told when it would air, because maybe it changed.

  • cookbunny

I gotta tell you, if it ends up being on “Baseball Tonight” or something, I’m calling “foul” (yes, I was going for the pun).

  • karenc

    Cookbunny,

I’m not sure what I’ll do if it is something else, I’ll have to tape two things. I’m hoping he’ll give more information soon.

Maybe there will be an announcement, either in the press or on the show, if that’s what it is.

  • ri

oooh. i forgot how nice Cookie’s legs are.

  • sma11ie

Someone remind me who Paul McDonald is?

In other news, I decided the winner of AI10 is Steven Tyler. Recall the prophecy of “Kris-ty Lee Cook”? Well, I just remembered what David used to say leading up to the AI8 finale to all the media questions asking who (Kris or Adam) he thought would win, and his stock answer was that the same guy wins every year: Simon Cowell. So I’ve decided, that the winner of AI 10 would be Steven Tyler. I think it’s already kinda heading that way, anyway… if you read the media coverage and look at Aerosmith sales =P

  • suenigma

That is actually pretty cool Smallie. So what is going to happen when the prophecy is finally fufilled? I am frightened.

  • Joyed

Someone remind me who Paul McDonald is?

He sang for like 30 seconds, and in recent weeks has tweeted about having nodes on his vocal chords. He is also in the Top 40 heading to Vegas (no spoilers from me!)

In other news, I decided the winner of AI10 is Steven Tyler. Recall the prophecy of “Kris-ty Lee Cook”?

I have been thinking that too! (Unless somehow Ta-Tynisia makes it cause she is the only other hope!)

  • cookcricket

Ohhhh, I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high, at least it will be something!

However, if it’s the boot song (yay!), I don’t care if it’s a cover or written by someone else, I just love the thought of that voice being on my TV every week for several weeks!

  • sma11ie

He sang for like 30 seconds, and in recent weeks has tweeted about having nodes on his vocal chords. He is also in the Top 40 heading to Vegas (no spoilers from me!)

That’s it? Based on that audition, VFTW is predicting him as the next WGWG winner? Is he impressive on youtube or something, cuz that audition was just okay.

  • Joyed

sma11ie, I’ve heard he sounds nice with his band, but I haven’t listened. VFTW is just following the idol blog meme that’s cropped up saying that idol will be destroyed if another guy wins, especially one with a guitar. (I’m not going to debate that except to say, I like variety AND talent)

They’ve joked (and probably mean it, lol) that they are going to try to vote a WGWG to the win to “ruin idol” *insert evil chuckling and bwahahas* They don’t care if Paul is actually talented or not – just because he is a WGWG they think he’ll win.

(I can’t quite convey the tone right, but I find them amusing when they talk about their evil voting plot for this year, it should bring the lulz if it comes to fruition)

And to bring my post back on topic: And if David has the boot song, he will be serenading all of the poor girls and guys who don’t play guitars while Paul triumphs ;P

  • http://twitter.com/maxsmom61 CathyMK

Based on that audition, VFTW is predicting him as the next WGWG winner?

Well, I think they’re being tongue in cheek about him winning, basing it mostly on his superficial resemblance to David, Lee, and Kris (are they ever not tongue in cheek?). His popularity is also based on his preIdol music with his 2 bands, the Grand Magnolias and the High Tide Blues.

Oh I get that, of course, I just didn’t see a lot of resemblance or potential based on the short audition clip is all. Maybe he’s got a tad bit of Lee’s tone, but kinda hard to tell with such a brief clip.

Back on topic. Um… can’t wait to find out the surprise!

  • 123abc456

It could be the bootsong or a song used in a montage. Who knows? Maybe it is on another TV show. We will find out next week hopefully.

  • tierbee

I just know that if things don’t turn out to the fandoms liking then there can be hell to pay and I would hate for David to be involved with that.

Heh, this fandom is in a permanent state of… well. Angst is probably the mild end. It’s a whole lot of “Why doesn’t he tell us more? Why doesn’t he give his beliefs and opinions?” followed by a Twitter feed that sears my eyeballs when he does say much of anything.

I refuse to get my hopes up about the boot song BUT I get to hear something new from David Cook next week so this is good. Gimme.

And that Cook/Archie video ALWAYS makes me sniffle – love them. Fanwarring between the Cook/Archie fans just seems *wrong*. Hugs to the Archie fans – can’t imagine he won’t land on his feet, he’s such a sweet and talented guy. There’s a whole lot of Cook fandom very fond of Mr. Archie :)

  • Aryanna

This is so exciting since this is my bday and David is my fave singer so this is really awesome! =D

  • Listening

OMG I JUST FIGURED IT ALL OUT, it’s so clear it’s in the tweets look at the tweets.

So it’s past midnight when it hits me why does David say extra treat in his tweet when you’ve had nothing isn’t it simply a treat there’s nothing extra about it. Then BAM it hits me that’s a clue isn’t there a television show called extra or extra tonight….yep that’s it he’s gonna reveal his treat on extra.

Even his most recent tweet confirms my theory he put the word extra treat in quotation marks isn’t that kind of odd unless there’s something special about them such as hey i’m referencing the name of a show.

  • suenigma

Happy Birthday Aryanna! I would have bought you David Cook’s new album as a birthday present, BUT ITS NOT OUT YET!!

Hi Listening. But would he have called the head honchos at Extra TPTB? That is a pretty Idol specific term. I also think that he used the word “extra” because it is seperate from his album, which he had already said he was done recording.
Perhaps he just wanted to draw a clear distinction between the two projects because they are either stylistically very dissimiiar, or because he doesn’t want to cause yet more angst in the fandom because of people thinking he was having to record additional material for his album. Perhaps you’re right, but if it’s any comfort, I’m pretty sure my Allsion pony isn’t going to prove accurate either.

  • Trina

Heh, this fandom is in a permanent state of… well. Angst is probably the mild end.

LMAO too funny! Up until yesterday some were still doubting we would even still get to hear the song! Its like all the waiting has made it difficult to even expect anything good to happen. Really, one thing about this fandom is expectations are always low.

  • karenc

I was just thinking, that if David was going to be on something other than AI, he most likely would have told us more about it, so we would know when it would be on. And a lot of fans still watch AI, so if it isn’t AI it would be on something we most likely wont be watching.

I’m sure within the next week there will be a more specific announcement.

  • blissful

Way late in adding my thoughts…

I’m assuming whatever the treat is, it will probably a cover. I just hope TPTB got their ducks in order so the song will actually air. I don’t want it edited out like the duet on Carrie’s special.

But it’s good to have any news these days.

  • Keel

But it’s good to have any news these days.

This. I’ve gotten pretty darn good at keeping expectations low regarding the new album (not the quality, but the timing and promo support from RCA/19), so I’m doing the same with this line of tweets. But it’s really nice to have something solid-ish that the fandom can chew over in the midst of the Great Cook Lull of 2010-2011. Still not convinced it’s the boot song, but even if it is, eh *shrugs*, it’s not written or co-written by him so how is that new and shiny? But on the bright side, the song may be for charity and possibly include a performance slot for Cook close to the end of the season. Hope the “extra treat” song doesn’t confuse matters when the first DCTR2 single is finally released.

  • fadetowhite

I’m not believing it’s the boot song, or anything else, until it is.

Very similar to the way I’m not going to definitively speculate on sales numbers, until I see DCTR2 released.

That is the only path to sanity for a Cook fan, I have decided.

And, honestly, if it is or is not the boot song, it really isn’t that important.

If it is, then it genuinely is just a nice ‘extra’ to tide us over to the next event.

If it isn’t, then I have to admit, it’ll make me laugh somewhat.

Now, if DCTR2 is full of variations of CBTM – then the proverbial will hit the fan! :lol

  • karenc

The rumor about David possibly doing the boot song was in USA TOday Idol Chatter. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2011/02/will-david-cook-sing-season-10-contestants-back-home/1

I’m thinking we should hear something one way or another, because I would think that AI would deny it if it wasn’t true, since the rumor is so public now.

  • Listening

Karenc, nice find and you’re right that’s big time now. I wonder if DC fans on twitter/net caused them to speculate it was the boot song as well. We kind of caused this ground swell of mass hysteria. We worked ourselves up in such a frenzy that we’ve convinced ourselves it could be nothing less than the AI boot song.

Hmmmm now i’m worried what if it’s not the boot song everyone will be so deflated, just a big exhalation of breath where everyone goes OHHH.

I gotta calm myself down. I gotta take his tweets at face value which is we get a song that way if it IS the boot song I can be pleasantly surprised and if it isn’t oh well.

  • karenc

    Listening,

whatever it is, it’s good for him, even if it isn’t AI, or not what we think.

I’m kind of impressed that it got into USA Today, that means that people in the media are really paying attention to him.

  • Incipit

I gotta calm myself down. I gotta take his tweets at face value which is we get a song that way if it IS the boot song I can be pleasantly surprised and if it isn’t oh well.

Listening, Logical idea. IMO. David never mentioned Idol. All he said is we get to ‘hear’ this treat on March 3. Forming reasonable theories works for me here – because we have some facts…but not OTT expectations…because we don’t have enough facts for conclusions. I too would rather be pleasantly surprised in nine days than disappointed.

    JMO. Of Course.

  • sma11ie

Hmmmm now i’m worried what if it’s not the boot song everyone will be so deflated, just a big exhalation of breath where everyone goes OHHH.

    Yeah, basically.

I don’t particularly view the Idol Chatter blog post as any confirmation, as it’s a pretty short blurb that just echoes what the other blogs have already speculated. If Brian or Shirley or someone from EW had gotten some confirmation or comment from TPTB, that’d be different. But right now, I’m leaving my expectations as blank as possible :).

  • Keel

I’m leaving my expectations at “whatever it is, how the hell does it tie in to the first single/new album launch?” because that’s where the tire hits the pavement for me. I wants the new single and I wants it now!! This “extra treat,” whatever it is, is just a means to an end.

  • Trina

Didn’t the boot song news not officially come out until one day before it debuted last year? If that happens this time its going to be a looong nine days. I don’t really view Idol Chatter as big time. Its basically an online Idol blog that’s part of a big newspaper, but its still essentially an Idol blog. I’m actually surprised any of the bloggers with connections to 19 haven’t got any info to pass on by now.

  • Listening

Sheesh why does everything have to be a secret, just tell us ALREADY. You see the thing is David doesn’t know the difference between teasing and torturing someone. A tease if continued too long is much like a tickle extended too long in the beginning it’s pleasant but after awhile it becomes annoying/painful.

I want it now now now now NOW. Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet, Is it Thursday yet.

  • sma11ie

You are my brain twin. That’s EXACTLY how I feel. I’m about a thousand times more concerned about the single, and, accordingly, album launch, than any extra, except as a nice little treat, and how it may affect aforementioned all-important single and album launch.

I don’t really view Idol Chatter as big time. Its basically an online Idol blog that’s part of a big newspaper, but its still essentially an Idol blog. I’m actually surprised any of the bloggers with connections to 19 haven’t got any info to pass on by now.

Another brain twin. Shirley tends to get confirmations a lot. The EW team does sometimes. Brian, on rare occasion. At this point, no one has, so I’m not placing any weight on any blog’s coverage of the speculation.

  • Incipit

I’m about a thousand times more concerned about the single, and, accordingly, album launch, than any extra, except as a nice little treat,

Sma11ie, I have a suspicion David regards this the same. He didn’t characterize it as a Big Deal when tweeting about it. The boot song may be an adjunct, but a nice ‘extra treat’ doesn’t compare to the anticipation for an Album he has spent over a year on. He’s been waiting to get it out there right along with us.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • 123abc456

The USA Today article is speculation but the buzz is getting pretty loud if it was printed there. : )

  • Keel

Wait, it’s not in the printed edition, is it? I thought it was just a blog within the USA Today website.

  • Trina

Right, see that’s the thing. I strongly suspect IF it is the boot song (or whatever it is for that matter) David doesn’t view it nearly as big as some fans might. Sure it would be a very cool thing and it would make me happy, but in the grand scheme of things its not that huge, its not what he’s been busting his ass working on months and months.

Out of all the bloggers I’d be shocked if Shirley Halperin didn’t already know what the deal is or at the least trying to find out..and if its not the boot song she wouldn’t hesitate to inform the fans. She’s as much as a Cooktard as any of us heh.

  • tinawina

I think it stands a pretty decent chance of being the boot song. But if its not I won’t be shocked.

I am really on the look out for the first album related press release. That ball needs to get rolling already. Before my St Patrick’s Day drinking date, that is. ;)

  • sma11ie

Right, see that’s the thing. I strongly suspect IF it is the boot song (or whatever it is for that matter) David doesn’t view it nearly as big as some fans might. Good point. If it is the boot song, maybe David is not evil and torturing and teasing us this much on purpose. He simply doesn’t view it as a much bigger deal than any other “treat”.

I agree though, that if it’s not true, then it’s weird that NO ONE from AI has shot down the rumors by this point through a statement to EW, THR, or whatever.

LOL Don’t forget the occassional skirmishes between fans, when they devour each other and sometimes their young when Cook fails to tweet a minimum of twice per week.

  • jumpstart

If it is the boot song, maybe David is not evil and torturing and teasing us this much on purpose.

I think he’s enjoying it. The sadistic WGWG. LOL!

  • Incipit

Heh. Wild Kingdom. I Flove it!

And I just took a look at the thread for the episode I have cautiously committed to watching on the 3rd. EEP! It’s been expanded (maybe) to include Now More Drama! Just Ick. And I keep thinking – the things I do to hear David Cook sing something new. Anything, at this point.

    Crumbs of sustenance indeed. *snerk*

  • sunchick

~emerges from hibernation, looks around, grabs new Cookie crumb to add to collection, retreats back into hole to dream of crazy organs, lyrical awesomeness, and a new tour while waiting out the winter~

    :-D

P.S. Cookie’s cover of High and Dry would make a cool boot song. Not that it would happen, but still…

  • standtotheright

Well, if I’d been dealing with a couple hundred people playing “are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet?” on Twitter with me every day for many months, I’d probably be tempted to tweak them a bit too.

He is a much better person than I am, though.

I’m about a thousand times more concerned about the single, and, accordingly, album launch, than any extra, except as a nice little treat, and how it may affect aforementioned all-important single and album launch.

All I can say is that if RCA and 19 can’t figure out how to leverage this to promote the launch, then they are utter morons and I’m adding burning pictures of Barry Weiss/whoever his replacement is and Iain Pirie to our St. Paddy’s Day drinking party.

  • sma11ie

No idea what this tweet from Nigel means:

dizzyfeet: Simon Fuller has been working on the “kiss-off” track for #AmericanIdol this Season. I think it’s great.

ITA. Personally, I’m ecstatic that he’s willing to share any information at all.

  • 123abc456

What does the Nigel tweet mean? It just makes it all more confusing. I am not sure that Simon Fuller has anything to do with David anymore.

  • cookbunny

Could David be doing a cover of “Kiss Off” by the Violent Femmes?

    Hey, I’m desperate here, I’ll take anything…

  • sma11ie

I am not sure that Simon Fuller has anything to do with David anymore.

According to wiki (which is *never wrong*, NOT), Fuller sold off CKX-19, but he is still CEO, which manages David. Soo… he does. According to wiki, anyway.

  • standtotheright

Could David be doing a cover of “Kiss Off” by the Violent Femmes?

“8, 8, I forget what 8 was for!” Damn, I love that song.

There’s no way in hell that it would happen, but that would be sweet.

Anyway, Simon Fuller is still AI’s executive producer. Seems reasonable that he’d be supervising the boot song.

  • sunchick

Cookbunny that would kill me dead. But since that song has what could be construed as a suicide countdown, I’m thinking no.

  • karenc

    Sunchick:

I was thinking the same thing, and that would be terrific.

dizzyfeet: Simon Fuller has been working on the “kiss-off” track for #AmericanIdol this Season. I think it’s great.

To me, this means that there is a song being produced specifically for the show by Simon Fuller. Even if Simon Fuller isn’t really David’s manager anymore, it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t have asked David to do this if he wanted to.

And it being great of course means David is singing it ;) LOL, I know it’s not really saying that!!!

  • cheese

Simon Fuller sings? What? No, I’m pretty sure that Nigel’s tweet is a clue that a Simon Fuller client is doing the boot song. While it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if they just had Carrie do it every year, I suspect that it is further confirmation that David will have the song.

I don’t think we’ll find out for sure until March 2/3, when we get the press release with the boot song news, album release date, title of the first single and radio add date.

  • Mary102

Trying to figure out when the boot song has been aired in the past, particularly wrt the top 24 being paired down to top 5 guys, top 5 girls, plus wild cards on March 3. Correct me if I’m wrong, but IIRC from S8 (when they had a similar format of “more people being kicked off than being safe, and done in groups rather than one at a time”), they didn’t really have a “boot song” for that show. Not until they actually got to top 12 and started eliminating people one by one. Though I could be wrong, idk. And this year’s format could be different.

I just remember when S8 had groups of 12, and then the top 3 were revealed each week, those three got to sing their song again, so it was more celebratory than having a boot song.

  • Mary102

Also, as I side note, I just hope the boot song is better, and goes to a better person, than last year’s. No offense to that person (forget their name, but think it was like the UK first pop idol winner or something), but the song was bad and forgettable, and no one in the US cared about it. Talk about a wasted opportunity. That boot song could have (and should have) actually gone to a former AI contestant.

  • sma11ie

Anyway, Simon Fuller is still AI’s executive producer. Seems reasonable that he’d be supervising the boot song.

As the executive producer, does he supervise EVERY boot song? If so, then what’s so unusual that Nigel felt the need to tweet this as news of some sort? Seems like he’s stirring the pot to me!

  • standtotheright

If so, then what’s so unusual that Nigel felt the need to tweet this as news of some sort?

As Mary102 pointed out, they apparently want people to know it won’t suck this year.

But I also completely believe that they know about the buzz and are trying to further it along. Becuz they’re eeeeevil.

  • karenc

    Mary102:

I remember, though that they introduced the boot song the week before the finals, at least they did when Carrie sang it. They did a video with a montage of contestants, I believe.

I’m getting confused. I’m talking about this in the headlines and here, lol.

Speaking of Leave Right Now, I heard that song at some store in the mall, I can’t recall which. Something like a Bed Bath & Beyond, I think. Anyway, I remember thinking the song was familiar, and couldn’t figure out why until near the end. Point is, it struck me as a very pretty, very bland ballad. Boot songs are always ballads, right? I hope, if it is David, that it’s not bland. And that his first single is not a ballad.

  • tierbee

The thing about all this is that if it does turn out to be David, I think it’s terrific that it shows that Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller are so supportive of him.

  • sma11ie

Also, if has to be a cover, and David’s doing it, I hope it’s a really cool band. I mean, Carrie got to cover Motley Crue, which was kind of a neat choice for her.

Now Nigel is just stirring the pot, I agree. No way the interns haven’t told him about the rumors – or he may have questions on his own Twitter – IDK – haven’t looked. He must be lovin’ the buzz – no matter what the trufax are.

  • Trina

Back during the season 7 tour one of my friends that got to a few afterparties ended up hearing that David was doing that damn Aerosmith song on tour because it was Fullers favorite performance of his. Um if true that should give you an idea of his taste…

  • 123abc456

OMG he is going to sing that Aerosmith song for the boot song? ;)

  • sma11ie

he may have questions on his own Twitter – IDK – haven’t looked.

He’s gotten a couple dozen tweets asking if it’s David since his “pot-stirring” tweet, but he’s been ignoring them- probably on purpose. Whatever that means.

Oy… IIRC, Nigel also enjoyed the asteroid song muchly- wasn’t it after that performance that Nigel was quoted behind the scenes complaining about Randy after Randy didn’t dig it? Again. Oy!

  • tinawina

Party? There’s a party? Where’s the party? tinawina, is the party in our bunker?!

A few of us have agreed to e-meet and drink heavily if there is no album news by St Patricks Day. The bunker would be a very good place to hold the meeting! LOL

I think Nigel is totally screwing with us. Bastard. :D

  • karenc

I actually like that song, but only when David or Steven Tyler sang it.

  • Trina

Yup that was the one EW said Nigel was jumping up and down out of his seat afterwards clapping like a loon. Well think about it, it was producers choice so Nigel and/or Simon selected the song for him. Double oy!

  • Incipit

Trina, just consider my rant about the musical taste of the middle aged British men on Idol to be right here.

In the early pre-tour interviews, David said several times he was doing ABMB – then we wound up w/the Asteriod. Ah well – it’s not as if we would have gotten “Barracuda” out of them, anyway. #lostopportunity

Sma11ie, I went and looked at his @timeline. I see what you mean – He knows.

  • 123abc456

I will meet you guys at the bunker. St Patty’s Day here we come.

I wonder if Dave knows he is driving his fans to drink.

The Asteroid song might as well be the soundtrack to AI. Urgh.

  • sma11ie

The Asteroid song might as well be the soundtrack to AI. Urgh.

I’m hoping the fact that it’s been sung about 10,000 times already this season (5000 of which by Lauren Alaina, lol) means that it’s not on the list for the voting rounds. I mean, songs like Georgia On My Mind, I Hope You Dance, I Want You Back, and Mercy seems to have been on the Hollywood cleared list for the past few years, but they’ve (thankfully) never shown up on the voting rounds. I’m hoping we’re done… no more Asteroid song please.

Oh, let’s level the playing field and do an entire episode in which every contestant has to sing the asteroid song!

And then the boot song can be Cook doing an electro-pop remix of ABMB… perfect for the kinder, gentler AI with its message of “no matter how early America got sick of you, you’ll always be a part of us… like Sanjaya Malakar… popping up in the news… never fully forgettable!”

[finds snark button and resets it to "off" position]

Tbh, I don’t think people cared much for the season 7 and season 8 boot songs either. However, I remember Will Young singing it in the top 2 night last year and actually being impressed, even though till that point i had been bored by the song.

but anyway, Nigel’s tweet makes believe more and more and David is the one doing this year. Getting very excited.

For the record, I will be drinking heavily on St. Patty’s day regardless. LOL.

  • Incipit

sma11ie, with S Tyler on the panel, I was hoping the Asteroid would be interdicted on the grounds of pandering – since repetition ad nauseum doesn’t bother TPTB, obviously. Look at “Hallelujah” – didn’t bother Cowell when he handed that to Lee that Timmeh had sung it in the same. damn. season. But then Lolita sang it to Stephen, and I gave up on that idea. Funny tidbit – BAJ at TWoP wrote that was the song that won AI for David. I just thought he was a whackaloon when he wrote that in the Weecap. Another middle aged men’s taste issue? He’s not even British. *snerk*

  • 123abc456

If David gets the song I think it will be a new song and not a cover. I am not sure why I think that but there you have it. LOL

  • sma11ie

I hope you’re right 123abc456 (heh, it’s fun to type your handle!)

  • Joyed

    My fearless prediction:

    1. David will sing the boot song

    2. The song will be a cover of a well-known song (a la Carrie’s boot song)

The benefit of a well-known cover vs. a new song that is not on his album, is that if it sounds like a cover, no one will think it is his first single by mistake.

I’d buy it! They some pretty awesome together, imho.

  • Incipit

I know you all think that I’m insane,

Naw – you’re not insane, suenigma. That works, because Allison used David’s arrangement; tempo, everything blends – although it sounds like she had a few more seconds to sing. Alto and dramatic tenor blend well there, someone did a nice job of putting it together.

I know it would make Allison happy to duet with David – she said so in an interview last year. Just please – not the Asteroid.
    ;)

  • karenc

I heard that about a year ago, and while I liked David’s version better, I did notice at the time that Allison used the same arrangement. I really like the way they put the tracks together, it really sounds like it was a duet. But I really think David and Allison’s voices blend well together. Something like Leather and Lace and Stop Dragging my Heart around by Stevie Nicks and I think it was Tom Petty would work good too for them.

  • jennylee27

According to my tivo, David is appearing on Entertainment Tonight tomorrow 3/3. In my area it is at 7pm, not sure if that is the same everywhere. Apparently there will be in-studio footage. Related to the surprise he mentioned?
