David Cook has been in Singapore, making the rounds of TV and radio stations for interviews, all leading up to a performance at the ION Orchard Fashion Show. He sang an acoustic set, singing a mixture of new and old songs. PLUS he unveiled a new cover–”Purple Rain” by Prince.

David uses his powerful, raspy voice to put a personal spin on the tune. I highly recommend checking it out below.

    Awesome cover, and something I wouldn’t have expected to see from him.

    David and Andy at Changi airport in Singapore, tweeting thanks and goodbye – around 3AM Eastern Time…ran into part of the Southeast Asian branch of the fandom, also headed home to Indonesia and the Philippines. Much shorter trip!

    That was so beautiful!

    Some of the other videos from this appearance are really beautiful.  Check out this rendition of “From Here to Zero”.  David’s & Andy’s harmonies are so good together, even though individually, their voices are quite different.

    ‘Lotta people have said it – one of the first was Orson Scott Card,
    (Award winning SF writer, (“Enders Game”, etc.) at length, and some
    detail, back in Season 7 – “David Cook is, quite simply, the best
    singer American Idol ever produced. He is, right now, already so good
    that I would like to hear him cover every song that I ever liked,
    because I think he’d bring something new to it…David Cook found the
    secrets inside the songs and exposed them to us in a way that was
    different every time.”‘

    Thanks for this quote. I’m always amazed by how many things Orson Scott Card writes that I totally agree with! That said, I agree with you (I suspect OSC would too, I guess, since he is aware of both how one makes a living and how one truly lives as an artist. heh) that what I want even more from David is for his original stuff to blossom forth with the potential that I still think it has. Here’s hopin.’

    …he is aware of both how one makes a living and how one truly lives as an artist.

    usedtobelucy, you’re very welcome. It’s from Uncle Orson Reviews Everything, OSC really enjoys Idol, and has written about the show and the contestants frequently, he also ‘sees’ it with a pretty clear eye (Interesting detail – his wife’s maiden name is Kris Allen). I think he has written the most about DC; that link is to just one page, from May 25, 2008, and I excerpted ruthlessly, it is long and detailed.

    Scroll down – there’s even a section where he ‘judges the judges’, the 2008 crew…really worth a read. There are other entries about DC, but there are twelve years worth of blog entries there – it could be quite the time suck.  Google helps.

    I also find more areas of agreement than I would ever have expected – when OSC wrote about the decline of metered, rhymed poetry, and posited that songwriters have assumed the role of poets, I pretty much gave up trying to figure out why that is. Heh. I can find that link easily, if you would like it.

    And yes, David using his original ‘voice’ in future songs would be/will be a hoped for outcome.  Meanwhile, each of these covers is a lagniappe. IMO.

    Thanks!
     I’ve run across OSC’s reviews of several things through Google in the past but never looked at the whole archive. …And, yes, I’d love the link on metered poetry if it’s easy for you to find.

    My favorite stuff from Card (have some reservations about a few of his Mormon-derived notions about life, I must say… but oh, well)  has been his writing about writing — His Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy is one of my favorite fiction-writing books, period.

    Same favorite stuff, probably the same reservations – but more agreement than disagreement…and who would have thunk it? Not me. It’s the academics – I’m a sucker for those, I guess. Heh.

    So that blog will give you plenty of reading material, for quite a while – cool.

    Meanwhile – here’s the link for Dance, Idol, Remembered Poems, from June 7th of this year.

    Enjoy!

    Thanks! That’s a really good read. (and of course OSC is a Martin Gardner fan as well. heh)

    I’d been hearing about how hilarious the M&G in Singapore was – finally saw a video clip – David and the Zombie Question – it really looks like everyone was having a blast!

    >> sahira z. ?@sahirawr
    Here’s David Cook answering the zombie question and laughing a lot at the M&G yesterday http://youtu.be/xMZtlCwLk7g #DavidCookatION

    And here’s a still of David on the Catwalk – how he segued from that into “Fade Into Me” stlll makes me *chuckle*. Nice note to end on…Heh.

    ~~~
    Pics from Changi – if the guys boarded anywhere near the time they tweeted goodbye, they both ought to be stateside by now – that was @15 hrs ago. IDK how close David is to Boca Raton – but it looks like he’s gonna make the gig OK.
    This has to be one of the best documented gigs ever – videos are still coming in for the ION Orchard show – seems to have been very successful.
