David Cook Covers Nine Inch Nails “The Hand That Feeds” – VIDEO

David Cook covered Nine Inch Nails “The Hand That Feeds” last night at The Pageant in St. Louis.  David is currently co-headlining a tour with Gavin DeGraw.

The Season 7 Idol winner has promised to do some fun covers on the tour. You never know what you’re going to get, so keep watching these pages to see what turns up.

Reportedly, David shot some footage for a music video before the concert! David’s new single, “Fade Into Me” is available on iTunes now.

New Covers by David Cook on this tour to date:

College Station, PA (Penn State): “Movin’ Out” – Billy Joel

Columbus Ohio: “In the Meantime” – Spacehog

St. Louis, MO: “The Hand that Feeds” – NIN

What will he add next? ;)

I thought David would only be doing songs from his album. Isn’t he trying to push that on this tour?

He’s doing 15-16 songs each night, so there’s room for other songs. It looks like 1 cover each night with some of DCTR thrown in with TLM.

  • Dlynne

Love this! Love the t-shirt, too.

  • hollygo9

YES! I was there! Great show, great cover.

  • Listening

I loved this cover definitely hard rocking. If I had to pick just one cover for the rest of the tour this is it.

In the meantime sounded real good too wish I could hear the words better. Love the band in this one.

As for Movin out that’s just a bunch of fun but prefer the other covers.

David said that last time, they changed up the set list every night, (except for those three days when Monty came on board and was learning the songs) but this time he thought they would do three or four rotating set lists.

Well, there’s only been three shows, if you don’t count the much shorter Seekrit Surprise Show in Joplin – and the set list has been changing every night, so far.

There does seem to be a plan to open with “Circadian” and close with REM, just as TLM does. It was only thrown off by the Wardrobe Malfunction night, when they had to sacrifice two songs to the duct tape moment. IDK if they can stand to play the same thing even in a loose rotation – he already did two covers one night, (Columbus) because he wanted to. The Idol tour, with its same proscribed set list and wardrobe, must have been very stifling.

But we’ll see, as the tour goes on. I’m interested in what else he choses to cover.

I got exited there for a minute. I saw David Cook covers Nine Inch Nails and I thought it was the song Animal for a minute there.

  • wordnerdarchie

Listen to the end of this video. DC mentions filming the video.

    Fade Into Me

  • suenigma

From your lips to David’s ears Ituneit. If he covered Closer (Animal) I think the fandom might implode – probably his most requested cover. Which is why he will never do it and is teasing us with this cool NIN cover. Heh. Satisfy them, but always leave them wanting more.

  • Incipit

    Very cool, wordnerdarchie. Thanks!

We actually just filmed that for the music video I talked about earlier.

We’ll know what they were up to by the end of the month – not so long to wait – on the DC Wait-o-Meter. *snerk*

David did a NIN cover on the last show of the last tour, “Every Day is Exactly the Same.” – but I like this one much better. It’s on my Pony list for my concert, so far – but I’m waiting to see – what else? Especially at Cain’s Ballroom tomorrow night.

There’s an article in the Urban Tulsa Weekly that came out today, and hints at “perhaps a few surprises for his old home crowd.”

  • batgirl478

That’s a great article from Urban Tulsa. I’m excited for those surprises since I’ll be at that show!

  • Incipit

    I’ll be at that show!

How fortunate for you, batgirl478! There’s a special vibe when David plays a venue with friends and familiar faces.

Please post how the evening goes?

Thanks to everyone who gets video for the rest of us. It’s much appreciated. It’s been great seeing David singing songs from the new CD and the old CD, I love them both. I went through a NIN phase few years back & still listen to Trent’s stuff. David’s Hand That Feeds was really good.

I will definitely post some updates! I also got the VIP package so I’ll be meeting him for the first time. I’m so freaking nervous but super excited!

But yes I love seeing him play “hometown” shows. I’ve seen him play in Oklahoma 3 times and they were really special shows.

It seems the tour is going well, a good match with Gavin and Carolina Liar, he’s getting better, and relaxed, confident, in good voice…I’m happy for him, he’s gotten this tour and finally a new single, somehow the stars have aligned and his career seems to be headed in the right direction. Hope for a EU tour next year, maybe same group?! I don’t know how well Gavin is known there, Carolina is somehow known in Northern part being as a Swedish band. I go sometimes to a band’s official(a US band) and I see often mentioned Carolina Liar’s music by fans from that part of EU(I never saw any fan from US) and they know about their new album, single, nothing about Gavin or DC though…Sometimes I put there some links with DC music as an exchange of music news, his album-picture inserted (the standard of the thread)….He has to go out (overseas) somehow and show he is a great tour-act, his music is good enough for any part of the world and TLM sounds awesome live. I like NIN cover!
ETA:Very good video and sound, thanks everyone involved with getting, sharing pictures, videos, comments, recaps… http://goo.gl/z9YGN

This cover is incredible. I was blown away by the other NIN cover from the last night of the DeTour. I really hope he plays this one more than that! If it’s this tour’s Died in Your Arms I’ll be more than happy. I love when David uses his lower register like this and the dark hard driving riff based stuff is right in my sweet spot. I’m also having fun following the tour thus far. The set lists have been very different and diverse. My concert is on Saturday. Omg!

  • offside

Great cover.I loved the Spacehog song, too.

  • wellhesback

I love how Cookie mixes things up at concerts!! He has a pretty large body of work to draw on, so why not. and a few covers are normal for any band – I think David chooses really interesting ones and does them well.
Loving the videos since I can’t get to a concert (so far) on this tour. and I hear the VIP merch is pretty cool. sigh.
wondering what speciial treats Tulsa will get, it being his adopted musical home town and all.

PS – also loving Dave’s look for the new tour. I knew he’d get away from the “dandy” look on tour

batgirl478, I am now officially on tenterhooks – because I saw a double spoiler from the Soundcheck portion of the VIP at Cain’s Ballroom – and I know you were there. But I’ll wait for it. ~Le Sigh~

    Dude’s got cojones, no question!

  • Curlin

Thanks for all the links to the various covers! Haven’t had time to check out the individual tour threads yet on DCO.

Incipit, after reading your comment, I just had to go to DCO to read the spoilers! LOL Reminds me of how excited I was seeing David playing the drums for the first time at the York Fair for Phil Marshall. Good times!

Haha sorry I am just now getting to this. But yes I was at the soundcheck and all I can say is OMG! It was amazing! He was under the weather so he first said he was only going to do 2 songs for us but then when he finished Fade into Me he asked someone for the lyrics for Dancing in the Dark. Said he wanted to try it out and see if his voice could handle it. Well when I heard that title I got excited and then almost burst when I saw him head over to the piano!! I’ve never seen him play before. It was amazing! He slowed it way down and gah it was just incredible. When he finished he said it wasn’t ready so he couldn’t do it tonight. We were disappointed but I had to laugh when he said he didn’t want to “shit in the bed.”

The concert itself was amazing. During soundcheck we could tell he didn’t feel good and during the M&G he was not very talkative (trying to preserve the voice) but still very sweet. But based on his performance at the concert you could not tell he was sick. His voice was in fine form and he showed so much intensity performing. I freaking love living in Oklahoma in that we always get such good shows. I know he does great performances all the time but these hometown ones just seem to have that little extra oomph. But I could just be biased ;)

When we were waiting for the encore the screams were so freaking loud. I don’t think I’ve ever heard screams that loud. The lady next to me covered her ears and I was tempted to do the same. After the show my ears were still ringing and I couldn’t even hear myself talk very well.

Devon, Monty, and Andy were hanging around after the show and I spoke to Devon briefly. I told him he was a good addition to the band (not that I don’t still love Neal!) but I particularly enjoyed Devon during Bar-ba-sol. He really seemed to get into it and looked like he was enjoying himself. I was on the Andy side of the stage so sadly I didn’t get to see Devon too much but from what I did see he really seems like a good fit.

Ok I seriously better get to bed now.

batgirl478, I’ve never hear screams so loud before either, and I’ve been monitoring and reporting on the these shows over the web from Day One. Not your imagination, it was rather fierce – and I hope you can hear OK today!

Thanks for the low-down on the VIP experience, and especially David on the piano for the very first time, and for ‘that’ song. I have to believe it will happen on stage, sometime before the tour ends – but congrats to you for being there last night – and getting the first taste! And many thanks for taking the time to fill us in before you hit the rack!

  • batgirl478

You are welcome Incipit. I am so glad I got to be there. Someone on DCO posted a mp3 of the song and I quickly downloaded it. I can’t wait to see when he does it in a concert. I so wanted to post while I was there but I was having trouble getting online with my phone so I had to wait.

Another thing I wanted to add about how great he is: when we came into soundcheck he thanked us for being there and spending the extra money to hang out with them since he acknowledged money can be tight lately. Then last night I saw on twitter he apologized to us VIP folks for not talking much since he needed to preserve his voice. I just thought that was really nice and shows what a considerate guy he is, along with being an immense talent!

And seeing him live just makes me love the songs from TLM even more. Not that I didn’t like them already but live versions are just so much better!
