Check out this link for song snippets from David Cook’s upcoming album, David Cook, due top drop 11/18 .

I’ve said it before: 30 seconds isn’t enough for me to critique the songs. Plus, I can’t get a few of them to play at the moment. I may update this post with some thoughts in a little while.

So far, my favorite on the album is “Mr. Sensitive.”   I still can’t get “Declaration” to play!

Thumbs up on “Declaration”… But, I’ll post more when I can hear entire songs.

I havent listened to them all yet(slow loading haha) but LOTM and avalanche so far I like. Again its gonna be hard to tell about the whole song untill we get full clips. arrggg

  • mac

    I am lovin on Bar-ba-sol!

ETA: A Daily Anthem is all kinds of awesome also.

  • http://randomlyyoursbouffe.blogspot.com/ Bouffe

I can’t get any of them to play. :(

  • bluejeans

    Bar-ba-sol is rocking my world!

  • mac

    Permanent :glurps_tb:

I am really loving all the snippets. It sounds like a really great album (from the snippets!). The songs really seem to showcase his voice.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

For those of you that got some of them to play, how did you do it? It’s not working for me either.

ETA: I’ve gotten just about all of them to play except Declaration which I absolutely love anyway. So far my favorites at this moment are Heroes and A Daily AntheM, but Barbasol is awesome! Permanent is beautiful.

  • dreamr

Yeah, not working for me either. What a tease. lol

  • http://randomlyyoursbouffe.blogspot.com/ Bouffe

For me, it is now taking something like almost 10 min to load ONE single snippet. I guess one needs to be patient… So far I’ve only listened to Heroes, and it sounds great…

  • mac

    Pam,
I am using firefox. At first they wouldn’t play. Seems like some of them take a long time to load. Then they just started playing after I let it sit there awhile. I still can’t get Declaration to play though. Sometimes when one didn’t play, I would click on the next one, then that would play. When it was finished, it would automatically play the previous one, even though the previous one didn’t play when I originally tried to play it.

Sounds all weird, sorry, but just explaining what I did. Hope it helps!

  • shell29

The songs take a few seconds to load…try refreshing the page as well. That seemed to do the trick for me. The only snippet I’m still having problems listening to is Declaration.

  • dahirsh

It was just posted as it’s own topic on DCO so if the site hasn’t crashed, it’s about to.

Hopefully Amazon will have them up soon too.

  • Dr. Tracey

Oh wow, I really, really like these songs.
Wasn’t too sure what to expect after Light On but i’m not disappointed.
    Roll on the 18th……..I can’t wait. :thumbup_tb:

  • jan

It’s really acting hinky for me. I put the widge on my myspace – that seems to help me get some but not all. I think I’m going to really like Avalanche but as MJ said such a small clip is not enough to tell.

  • http://randomlyyoursbouffe.blogspot.com/ Bouffe

I clicked on all the snippets, and it seemed to have loaded in the player. And now they are all playing.

  • Trina

From what I can actually get to load I love Permanent and Bar-ba-sol.

  • sma11ie

I must be really lucky– maybe somehow I got in there early and am hogging the bandwidth? Cuz I’m able to hear everything except Declaration (which I’ve heard, so it’s fine) and Mr. Sensitive, which I’m dying to hear, based on what DC’s said about it!

I’m also hesitant to post any in-depth opinions on 30-second snippets, but my overall reaction is that I’m not canceling my pre-order anytime soon, cuz I’m gonna love this record (big surprise haha). The songs sound very “undeniably” DC, seem to flow well to me, yet offers a pretty good variety of DC styles. More specifically, I’ll copy over some initial reactions I posted in the headlines thread:

cool that LOTM is Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fave cuz I really like ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the 30 second version!
Permanent sounds like it might be about Adam as well? The only songs Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not that sure about are Bar-ba-sol, and (gulp) the beginning of Permanent, but only the beginning of that line.

ETA: Can hear Mr. Sensitive now! I think I like it. Promising beginnings of some really cool lyrics, it seems.

  • tinawina

I still can only get them to play sporadically. It is so hard to judge like this, but I didn’t hear anything I hated. They sound WAY more like David than Light On so far. Wordy, brighter, rock that could be on your radio, not in a bad way either. No way to really tell for real until we hear the whole songs. This is torture!

  • bluejeans

Archie has good taste. I love Life On The Moon. Especially the bit at the end of the 30 sec. That piano and haunting voice…GUH!

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I am using firefox. At first they wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t play. Seems like some of them take a long time to load. Then they just started playing after I let it sit there awhile. I still canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get Declaration to play though. Sometimes when one didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t play, I would click on the next one, then that would play. When it was finished, it would automatically play the previous one, even though the previous one didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t play when I originally tried to play it.

Thank you mac. Sounds like we both had the same exact problem with getting Declaration to play. I’m using Firefox also. It did take a while, but finally I did get the rest minus the obvious exception to play.

  • hollygo9

Wah! I’ll have to wait until I get home.
Someone give me a recaplet of each song. Puhleeeeze.

  • fedexhamlin11

love every freakin song!!! Bar-ba-sol sounds amazing, and i absolutely love permanent… i cant wait, its really driving me crazy waiting for this!!

  • mar_4DC

Luckily I can get all but Declaration to play also. I am definitely not disappointed even with only a 30 second sound bite! My b-day is Wednesday so I look at it like an early present, lol, thanks mj. Now I’m really excited for my Cd to arrive:) So far really lovin Avalanche, bar-ba- sol, A daily AntheM, Lie.

  • mac

Glad you got them to play Pam!

  • soundscene

I like A Daily AntheM, Heroes and Come Back To Me. Not sure about the others until I hear the whole songs. :)

  • cheese

Aww, I won’t be able to listen until at least 8:00 tonight. Is anyone willing to declare Light On their least favorite on the record at this point?

Can anyone figure out what Bar-ba-sol is all about? Do any of them sound like Miley’s “7 Things”?

  • tinawina

    Much better link here.

I actually like these so far. Really. I can’t pick a favorite though, need to wait for whole versions. Good job David!
    :clap_tb:

  • mac

Is anyone willing to declare Light On their least favorite on the record at this point?

I am declaring it! Even though I like LO, I think it will be my least favorite judging from the snippets.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

i like what i hear so far
but really wish i’d waited to hear the WHOLE song

but i am luving that he hasnt strayed far from the sound on analog heart :)
    which i absolutely loveeeeeeeeeee

  • Kirsten

    Bar-ba-sol sounds amazing

I can’t listen to the snips, but I’m curious what this song is about. At first, I thought he’d written a song about that poor race horse that died a little while ago (but, no, that’s Barbaro). Then, half the time I start singing Barbra Ann by the Beach Boys in my head (Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann) and I’m sure that’s not right either. So, I’ve been intrigued since I heard that title.

ETA: See, cheese is curious too!

  • leome

I really didn’t wnat to listen to… but couldn’t resist.

Overall the first impression is pretty good. There are 3/4 songs that I can’t remember cause they didn’t cause any kind of impression but the rest seemed to have lots of potential.

Bar-Ba-Sol, Permanent and Heroes stand out. 3 different songs but the 3 seem very very good. I wish I could listen to those 3 now. It would be nice if there were more songs like Bar-Ba-Sol, that one is sounding pretty awesome.

Besides those I enjoyed what I listened of Life On The Moon, Declaration, Avalanche and A Daily Anthem…

Light On is probably the least interesting song in the middle of that. Someone working on David’s album must be Chris Cornell’s best friend.

  • Lisa

Did not read the comments because I wanted to give my first impression without them.

Why was Life on the Moon not his debut song???? I love this one from the little I can hear. This one has *hit* pinging off of it out into the universe.

I am also liking *Lie* & *I did it for You*.

I am with the club that does love Light On. I am not so wild about Declaration at all. Yes I love rock music but I am from the *old rock* school. I also enjoy my ballads, heh.

I see several hits off of this album but LOTM is a solid WINNER!

ETA. I got to listen to a few more.

Bar ba sol: I really love the music on this one.

Permanent, love this one!! From the snippet I heard, David has a Steve Perry vibe going on here.

There are alot of really good songs on this. David you did us Proud!!!!

  • Michelle

Oh, yay! These came out faster than I thought. Thank you tinawina, that link plays them no problem (I had given up on the original link)

It sounds pretty solid overall. I think it will meet MJ’s “not sucky” test at the very least :)

Declaration, Heroes, Come Back To Me, Mr. Sensitive, A Daily AntheM stand out for me with the usual caveats “they’re only snippets” and “I need to hear the bridge” lol.

It looks like Permanent may be the only acoustic-ish track on there but maybe the bonus iTunes track…?

    Overall I’m pleased :)

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Deleted because I didn’t see tinawina’s above post with the link. lol

  • grrrr

but i am luving that he hasnt strayed far from the sound on analog heart :)

Mr. Sensitive especially sounds like a long-lost Analog Heart track, what with the rhyming of diligence and elegance.

Man, it took forever to get that stupid player to work! Bar-ba-sol is catchy as hell, can’t wait to hear the whole song.

  • Lisa

Need to add to my list, I really like Avalanche & A Daily Anthem also. I pretty much like most of them.

  • Sarah

Thank you, thank you! That second link worked really easily. Love Declaration, of course, and thought all the other snippets sounded highly listenable. Really liked the bounciness that is Bar-ba-sol! Sounds a little cheeky. Fun stuff.

  • http://randomlyyoursbouffe.blogspot.com/ Bouffe

I’m not gonna post an in depth analysis of the snippets – they are just that, snippets! But I can say with 100% certainty that this album is gonna rock my socks off. The songs all sound great… And really, they do sound like David. And to be honest, while I love Light On and Time of My Life (yeah, I do love the songs), they are way, way, way out of place on that album. All the others flow well… But those two stick out like sore thumbs.

  • Keel

tinawina, thanks so much for that link.

Is it weird that I love Declaration MORE now that I heard the studio version? This is so weird because they kicked it during SNL, but listening to the studio tells me that it’s an awesome radio song as well as an awesome song on its own.

Other ones that I liked on first listen: Heroes, LOTM, Lie, A Daily Anthem, Permanent and Bar-ba-sol.

Umm, yeah, so I’m probably not cancelling my pre-order any time soon.

  • psnax

Based on these 30 second snippets I am VERY excited for the album — not that I wasn’t excited up til now! But admittedly I was nervous that DC’s new original music just wouldn’t pull me in the way his covers and AH did.

  • LK08

I apologize if someone has posted this and I missed it. I can’t get the link above. This is a European site that has them all. They have DA’s too. I like it because you can click on that “buy all” button and it will play them in a row.

    http://www.7digital.com/artists/david-cook/david-cook/

  • john_socal

Well this is just torture only being able to listen to a few seconds of each song…. TORTURE!

  • toma

I still think “Declaration” is the best single that Cook can release that will go well across all demographics. It’s the catchy song that I can see propelling DC to the top of the charts.

Come Back To Me: I’m really liking this song. lol.. it’s a good pop/rock ballad. It’s quickly becoming my favorite 30sec snippet.

Life on the Moon: Hard to tell from the snippet, but it seems like a good song.. i’m liking the instrumentals.

Mr. Sensitive: Sounds like this one may be the most interesting lyrically. I think I will like this one too.

Permanent: I think this will be the TOP choice for power ballad.

To COOK/RCA: release Declaration and Permanet as your next singles! These two will do well on the charts. (that’s my non expert opinon :sleep_tb:)

Overall, i’m happy w/ DC’s album. I will definitely purchase and not just for “support”.. but because it’s a good album. I think AI will have it’s best album turn outs this year, w/ the exception of country (sorry KLC :down_tb:). Go DAVIDS!

  • sma11ie

OMG, what is wrong with me? I FLOVE Bar-ba-sol now. So strange that my first reaction was that I wasn’t sure about it. It rocks! I think I’ll end up loving Permanent as well– I’m just still not quite sure about the beginning phrasing– hard to describe but maybe it seems too long?

Also, finally got Declaration to play. Doesn’t sound too much more processed to me at all– I’m pleased it’s pretty much what we heard . Kinda funny to hear (I think) DC’s voice doing the back-up now that I’m used to Andy’s from the SNL performance, haha.

  • Jolene

All of the snippets, in order, on one YouTube video:

    David Cook Album Preview

OK, now I’m actually going to go listen. Guhh!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I’m gone for a few hours, and this is my reward…?! SCREAM! SCREAM!

  • PCdoctor

All in all should be a solid album for David Cook.

  • karaokequeen

    First impressions here…

“Heroes,” at first listen to that very short clip, sounds like the most radio-ready to me. That and “Mr. Sensitive” are my favorites so far.

I also quite like what I’m hearing of “Lie,” “I Did It For You,” and “A Daily AntheM.”

Promising but I really need to hear more of it: “Come Back to Me”

I can already tell some of the ones I haven’t mentioned will probably grow on me. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if they all do. But it is really hard to tell from these 30-second bites.

What I’m now ubercurious about is which songs (besides “A Daily AntheM”) David wrote by himself, and with whom he co-wrote each of the others. Anyone wanna take guesses?

  • kathrynTX

Oh oh oh. I know I’m gonna be singing along in about 2 days after getting this dang album! I’m pretty sure I’m loving it…after I got the snippets to play, dang it. Now they are on rotation til I turn them off HAHAHA! I guess I’ll just take what I can get UNTIL WE HAVE THIS RECORD, MR. COOK. ARGH.

A Daily AntheM. Oh dear. Permanent. Oh I’m just going to be a mess. I almost cried at Declaration on SNL. *sniff*

Why does so much FEEEEELING come across to me when he sings? His phrasing is great. Even cliche phrases sound new to me. I so enjoy finding some kind of meaning in these songs, for myself.

OK I promised someone (lucyfan!) that I would listen critically and do a song-by-song discussion…when the album comes out and I have ALL of it! :jittery_tb:

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    OMG!!! Love:

    “Bar-ba-sol”

    “Permanent”

    “A Daily AntheM”

    “Life on the Moon”

    :jittery_tb:

Okay. I can relax a little now.

  • toma

Permanent.. beginning is awkward lyrically.. this is what I hear.. and I can be VERY wrong.. but this is what I hear:

“the know you know it seems so far away and everything is different where you rest your head …. permanent”

Am I totally WRONG on those lyrics?! :blink_tb: Either way.. intro sounds awkward, but i’m sold with the word/phrasing of “permanent.” This is the Cookie voice that strikes me the most and I’m sooo glad he made this song for me… lol ..Thanks Cook!

I can’t get into Bar-ba-sol (isn’t that a shaving cream??) but I can see how it would be fun to perform in concert. And I also can’t get into A Daily Anthem. I think bar-ba-sol may grow on me, but time will tell.

  • Michelle

toma, here’s what DC=42 has figured out for Permanent:

    When all you know
    Seems so far away
    And everything is temporary
    Rest your head
    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m permanent

    Works better, yes? :D

  • IGetCranked

Finally heard them. I like most of the songs and while I was one of the few who liked LO, I think RCA messed up releasing that as the first single. I also liked the studio of Declaration and I wasn’t crazy about it when I watched SNL. I think Life on the Moon could be a big hit.

  • toma

Michelle… lmao.. WOW.. either Cookie needs to annunciate better or I need my hearing checked! Yes, that works MUCH better. It’s a good thing I don’t write songs, cuz that would be one short career!

    Thanks for the lyrics!

  • sma11ie

toma- I think I’m with you completely on Permanent. The phrasing awkwardness is just the first 10 seconds, though, and provided the rest of the 3 minute song is more like the 20 seconds I flove, then we’re good. Also, it took only 3 listens for me to go from: ERM, not sure, to WHOA, love it on Bar-ba-sol. I love A Daily Anthem though.

Thanks to LK08 for the “Buy All” button tip, now playing everyone on loop haha. But guys, I’m happy for Magic Rainbow’s success, but it does sound really out of place…

  • Jolene

toma, the lyrics to Permanent are:

    When all you know
    Seems so far away
    And everything is temporary
    Rest your head
    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m permanent

Not so awkward after all, I think.

ETA: LOL, Michelle beat me to it.

The lyrics to Life On The Moon break my heart a little.

  • cheese

“Permanent” was recorded in one take. Perhaps they should have re-done the first 10 seconds, lol.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    Now I have a headache….

  • jpfan

Sounds well produced and solid. It doesn’t sound that different from Daughtry’s stuff from what I hear and that sold tons. My only complaint is the lyrics sound very cliche. I can’t say much more from a 30 sec clip but it seems like a decent album.

I know alot of people like the lyrics but to me they’re not that distinctive based on the clips.

  • Jolene

OK, I had to put up the lyrics to Life On The Moon:

    Life on the moon
Wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t feel as far away
The life that I knew is through
And Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to need you more than ever
Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m alone in this crowded room
Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like life on the moon

(Thank you to ellemarie on DC=42)

This is about life after Idol, Y/Y? I already love this song, and all I have is a 30 seconds clip.
But, then again, I love everything I heard.

  • toma

The “Permanent” awkwardness comes from the mouthful of words that are spilling at one time. I thought the same thing on one of Archie’s songs, but it is one of my favorite songs as well (like Permanent).

It’s like there is a tons of lyrics to get to a climb and then it drops you like a ton of bricks into a pool of sweet emotions. I guess, it’s not a bad thing, if you look at it that way.

  • Lisa

Well done Mr Cook! Brava! :clap_tb:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I just put some mp3 clips up here in the post. Enjoy!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Okay, how many times am I allowed to listen to that “Bar-ba-sol” snippet?

  • bluejeans

I dunno, GwendolynD, but I can’t get over how he sings “just shut TIGHT!” Hot!

  • CathyMK

I’ve given up trying to judge albums based on 30 second samples. That being said, I do like all of these songs. I’m having the opposite problem from most of you- when I click 1, it plays that one, then the last 2 or 3 that I played as well, so the samples are all jumbled up in my head! LOL I’m especially loving the rhythm of Bar-ba-sol. I still love Declaration best, though that may be because i know the whole song. It could definitely be a great single, way better than LO. I thought the album overall would sound harder- there’s a whole lot of strings in those snippets (or maybe it’s just the ones that keep repeating themselves on my computer?). It’s going to be a tough 2 weeks waiting to hear the whole thing- maybe there’ll be a new one or 2 at the Wright Gala?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Okay, okay, I’ll stop over-analyzing in a moment, but geez, the harmony is pretty tight. Wonder if that’s him?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Hey! I got mp3 clips right here! No more problems. At least none I can’t fix. :)

  • Keel

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to be a tough 2 weeks waiting to hear the whole thing- maybe thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be a new one or 2 at the Wright Gala?

I heard that last year’s guests (was it Fall Out Boy?) sang 10-12 songs during the Wright Gala. Do you think David Cook and Unnamed Band will perform all of the songs on the album or one or two of the bonus tracks? If so, that’d be great so we can figure out how all these songs track out. These snippets are awesome but maddening. I think my meh-ness about Come Back to Me is that the snippet ends right when the chorus starts.

  • sma11ie

the harmony is pretty tight. Wonder if thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s him?

I definitely heard DC’s voice in Andy’s part during Declaration, and we all know that he sang his own back up for Light On, but I could’ve sworn I heard Andy’s voice in a few of the other tracks, like maybe Lie and Avalanche, even some others perhaps…? Man, I really want/need more background on these tracks so I can over-analyze some more! I want to know who co-wrote which tracks, who sang back-up, etc. Btw, anyone figured out Bar-ba-sol’s lyrics yet? I think DC does a pretty good job enunciating for a rocker, but those lyrics are the hardest to decipher for me.

  • CathyMK

Thanks for the easy-to-use samples MJ! I can sort them out now. “I Did It for You” sounds a little Snow Patrolish to me. I really love what we can hear of A Daily AntheM too. I’m with you, Sma11ie, I want that Digital Booklet with all of its secrets NOW! Declaration and A Daily AntheM sound the most like his previous writing to me. It’ll be interesting to see if either has a cowriting credit- even ADA could have been polished up with a cowriter.

  • caringgirl

Its hard to tell much about 30 second clips, but I have to say that I liked all of them on that first listen..second listen, I wanted MORE DAVID COOK. I cant wait to get my hands on this cd.

  • Lisa

After listening to the snippets many times here is my order of liking them.

1 & 2. It’s a tie between Life on the Moon & Bar Ba Sol.
    3. Permanent
    4. I Did it for You
    5. Avalanche
    6. A Daily Anthem
    7. Come Back to Me
    8. Mr Sensitive
    9. Lie
    10. Declaration
    11. Heroes

I want to see if my list changes when I hear the whole songs. I don’t look for my top two tie to change at all.

  • gingerly

I think one or two songs have a Daughtryesque sound, but I don’t overall equate what I’ve heard so far with Daughtry and I flove David Cook’s voice–not so much Daughtry’s (he gets pretty goatish for me). My only complaint is that most of the record has that overproduced sound that is so popular today. His voice makes up for it however, and maybe that’s why I’m loving Permanent and Bar-Ba-Sol so much, the two least processed tracks. I typically listen to alt-country which is the farthest thing from overproduced you could imagine..the band live was so much better for me. (I’m off to listen to my one guitar, one harmonica, one voice version of Fortunate Son to cleanse my palate of the sound of 40 or so guitars mushed together.)

  • Incipit

I want “Bar-Ba-Sol”, now. It’s a Blues/Rocker that grabbed me by the throat in thirty seconds flat.

The rest of the songs have me absolutely dying to hear the whole cut of each one, but “Bar-Ba-Sol”? I’m already a goner….It rings my bells – like “Declaration”did.

Now, if the rock gods are listening…the WalMart bonus track “Breathe (Right/Tonight) will have the same effect….but that one I have to wait for…trusting in RS calling it a Riff Rocker.

Well, hard to get too opinionated about 30-second snippets, but this sounds pretty good. Didn’t hear anything that made the hair on my neck stand up, but I didn’t hear anything I hated either. Not really my style of music, but this could grow on me. Only negative I have to offer is the weird Eddie Vedder imitation he does for about 5 seconds on almost every clip. My faves based on these clips are:

–Declaration. Although the chorus sounds WAY too much like Best of Both Worlds by Mylie Cyrus (please don’t flame me). Has the catchiest hook of any of the songs we could hear.

–Life on the Moon. Maybe just because it’s more my style of music. But aside from that, it also seemed to have the most unified sound. Does that makes sense? Like, the words and the music came together at the same time from the same person with a focused vision.

  • YellowClouds

    Oh, this is fun.

Life On The Moon – hasn’t left me since I first listened to it. The melody is really strong and has something sad about it.. it really grabs me.

Bar-ba-sol – This one really stands out. Not surprised he mentioned it as one of his favorites. If it’s that much fun to listen to I bet singing it doesn’t feel bad either. I want to see it live.

Declaration – really really want this one to be the second single. I love it.

Permanent – I want a full album of Cook and a piano. Wait, no. I want Cook to move in with me, I’ll play the piano and he’ll sing. All day.

I did it for you – again, less production = more Cook = happy me.

    Also love Avalanche and ADAM.

*goes back to waiting mode* :wallbash_tb:

  • Seachange

De-lurking. MJ, thank you. I now know I will be very happy with this CD, especially after being put through hell with Light On. LOVE the bluesy beat of Bar-ba-sol (still cannot figure out what it is about, but the lyrics sound tongue-in-cheek, IDK). I understand what you mean about 30-second snippets, but it took only 5 seconds of A Daily Anthem to make me cry (messily). It’s very David, at his sweetest. Not moved as much by Permanent or Mr. Sensitive, but that’s just me. I hear an 80s sound in Come Back to Me, without the trite throwback qualities of Light On. Declaration sounds much smoother than the live performance, and the backup doesn’t sound like Andy (I agree it sounds like David himself). I like the grittier and more heartfelt live version much more. As far as I can tell, these 11 tracks are all far better than Light On. A remaining wish: that the picture on the album cover get changed! Just had to get that out.

Thank you also, MJ, for the SNL vids, as we do not get that program in my part of the world. (Sorry, am getting all OT but my first chance to say. You can delete this paragraph if it’s too much.) Declaration renewed my faith, and I have been playing it over and over. The live performance of Light On wasn’t perfect, but there were no major problems, and of course Cookie was at his winsome best.

  • psyche

I really like these clips. It’s pretty much what I expected from David, which is why I became his fan in the first place.

  • Jolene

Oh man, these are going to be some LONG days until the album comes out.
I love pretty much all of the songs. I pretty much had the YT compilation on repeat since I first got the link… so, over an hour? Man…

Order of favoritism for this very moment:
    1. Declaration = Bar-ba-sol = A Daily AntheM
    4. Heroes
    5. Life On The Moon
    6. Lie
    7. I Did It For You
    8. Permanent (Only until I hear the full song, I’m sure)
    9. Avalanche
    10. Mr. Sensitive
    11. Come Back To Me

    306. Light On. I hate RCA.

  • Keel

A remaining wish: that the picture on the album cover get changed! Just had to get that out.

After seeing him again on Saturday night, I have to agree.

  • Michelle

Okay, got home and on some headphones (was huddled over the monitor speakers at work, lol). Mr. Sensitive and Come Back To Me are gorgeous once you get a good listen to them.

Wow, what will we all do when we get the full versions which are like, 10x as long? :D

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Order of favoritism for this very moment:

    You forgot “Magic Rainbow”. :laugh_tb:

  • cheese

    306. Light On. I hate RCA.

lol. I haven’t even heard the snippets yet and my gut tells me that I’m going to feel the same way. At least it sounds like RCA has some other songs to turn to if LO underperforms as a single.

  • Jolene

    You forgot à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Magic Rainbowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

    TOML FTMFW! of course.

Though, seriously? If LO is 306 (on my scale of 1-13) than TOML is 307.
It’s just that these new songs, written by David, are so far above anything else he could sing, for me. I really love that man’s songwriting.

BTW – how do I use emoticons? I feel like I should probably know this by now. LOL

  • dreamr

Eeee! Mucho thanks to the person that posted the YouTube link! I can’t stop listening to this compilation now. lol

I am so excited for this album! All of the tracks sound great to me! I can’t even list my favorites right now. XD

I am curious why RCA would release LO as the first single when there were all these awesome songs to choose from. Like someone said earlier, perhaps someone was close friends with Chris? My cynical/paranoid side wants to say that it’s some evil plot to get back at DC for the whole “Billie Jean” thing. XD

Seriously, though…I love what I’m hearing. The songs sound great. David sounds great. Just about two weeks left before we get the album! :D

  • Lisa

My son’s list in order: (just in case there are any types of intern’s watching)

Stats: Male, 27 listens to KMOD & KHITS (Tulsa)

    1. Declaration
    2. Avalanche
    3. Life on the Moon
    4. Heroes
    5. A Daily Anthem
    6. I Did it for You
    7. Come Back to Me
    8. Permanent
    9. Mr Sensitive
    10. Bar Ba Sol
    11. Lie

Wow his list is so different than mine! For the record he does like Light On.

  • rayni

Love love love Permanent and Declaration. And I don’t dislike any of them – even Magic Rainbows. There’s just some pleasure in hearing the man sing.

I am not a Daughtry fan and never listened to his album. His vibrato was just too ‘goaty’ for me. For those of you who know, does this sound like his album? Not starting idol comparisons, just wondering if I should listen to/buy Daughtry.

  • YellowClouds

I really don’t see the Daughtry connection. At all.

I can’t even imagine him singing any of these songs. MAYBE the chorus of LO cause it’s his kind of shouty.

  • Jolene

Oh man, I love the innovative fans in this fandom. Someone already made a fanvid using “Heroes” for… wait for it… the TV show Heroes.
    Brilliant!
    Heroes Promo

  • GEEK4VOCAB

I was trying so hard to be unspoiled but they were just there for the clicking and I just HAD TO.

Oh my God. I absolutely love every single song. I’m still crying from Permanent.

I might be crying because I love it so much and I was worried. I don’t know what I was worried about. This album is absolutely amazing.

I really loved Heroes and Avalanche. Bar Ba Sol… There was one where the lyrics made me gasp. I can’t remember now. I listened so fast and now I have to go back and do it again. WOW.

Oh and I really like Light On, but I can’t believe they didn’t release Declaration as the single. It’s perfect.

  • Michelle

I don’t have Daughtry’s album but I have heard his songs all over the radio LOL. I think they definitely have different sounds. DC’s music seems to have more edge.

  • CathyMK

So, to recap the day a bit- from RCA we get 15 seconds of the LO video, the day before it’s released, and from MJ we get all 11 song samples early. Score 1 for MJ and her spoilers!

ETA: The Heroes “promo” is fantastic- I love the way they synched up the video action with the lyrics! ;0)

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I was trying so hard to be unspoiled but they were just there for the clicking and I just HAD TO.

    Being unspoiled is highly over-rated! :) .

  • dew

i love these songs first time i heard them:

declaration WOW!!!!!! ( should really really have been the single instead of LO)
    heroes
    come back to me
    lie
    life on the moon lie
    i did it for you
    avalanche
    a daily anthem

these songs are the ones i always love to have on my iPod. hehehehe

  • sma11ie

A remaining wish: that the picture on the album cover get changed! Just had to get that out.

After seeing him again on Saturday night, I have to agree.

I was one of those who considered herself pretty satisfied with the album cover when it first came out– but now that I have SNL Cookie fresh on my mind, I’m like, what was I thinking (/Simon voice)? When the cover came out, I really feel like it had been so long since I’d seen DC in HD goodness that I must have forgotten how good looking the man is. Now, when I look at this cover and compare it with the SNL pics, it suddenly looks like one of the worst picture of DC I’ve ever seen! Noo…

  • jpfan

Okay, MJ’s clips made it easier to listen to the cuts. I’d say Bar Ba Sol is my favorite. The rest are perfectly decent examples of what is now called Flyover Rock (which is a category where we would find Daughtry and Hinder.) It’ll be interesting to see how the album does. LO was a bad choice for the first single though.

  • Autumn

    I love them all but
    Lie
    Permanent
    Life on the Moon

    Grabbed me from the start

  • Dlynne

I am so happy!!! I love them all, I really do. Although, I have to say that Light On seems really out of place with the rest of the album now. But I’m glad as it’s not my favorite song. Bottom line, it’s a rare occasion that I like this many songs on an album so I am thrilled!

The phrasing on I Did It For You just makes me sigh. Wow! I think my second fave is a tie for Declaration and Permanent. I’ll have to have a full listen to the rest before I can make a list.

I cannot wait to listen to the songs in their entirety. I can tell you that this CD is going to be set on repeat for a long time.

  • cheese

The rest are perfectly decent examples of what is now called Flyover Rock (which is a category where we would find Daughtry and Hinder.)

Aww, so the recorded version of Declaration is all dreary and butt rock-y? That’s disappointing. As performed live, it had about 10 times more energy than any Daughtry or Hinder single I’ve heard.

  • dante

I think I love ALL the songs! His voice is amazing of course which seals the deal.

I am so relieved after being so disappointed in Taylor’s CD after S5.

Am going back for another listen….. or two …. or three…..

  • Michelle

Declaration sounded pretty much like the SNL version to me. Maybe a little “smoothed out” but that’s it.

  • JudyOhio

I like Permanent, Bar-ba-sol, and Declaration the best so far. But like others have said here, 30 seconds is just too little time to make any meaningful determination. I liked Light On on SNL, but still do not like the recorded version. All and all, I think he’s got a pretty darn good album here! It’s going to do well.

  • Autumn

The rest are perfectly decent examples of what is now called Flyover Rock (which is a category where we would find Daughtry and Hinder.)

I disagree completely. I don’t hear Daughtry at all and I think it is a bit too early for me to make an all out judgement based on 30 sec snippits so I will wait for the 18th to do that.

  • Autumn

Aww, so the recorded version of Declaration is all dreary and butt rock-y? Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s disappointing.

Declaration didn’t sound “dreary” at all to me, I’m not sure what “butt rock-y” is LMAO but I don’t think that adjective would apply LOL I really loved Declaration on SNL and the recorded version sounds just as good or better IMO.

  • gingerly

I like Permanent, Bar-ba-sol, and Declaration the best so far. But like others have said here, 30 seconds is just too little time to make any meaningful determination.

I think (for me at least) that Permanent and Bar-Ba-Sol reach out and grab you. They do so for totally different reasons for sure, but they indeed evoke a response. I haven’t seen a bad response yet. Declaration, I think is totally awesome, but I don’t know that you’d come to that conclusion with the snippet. Maybe people would, but I probably wouldn’t. We got the SNL version…it was totally FTMFW. I really like all the songs on the album but have to hear the entire songs (and more than once) to come to a clearcut decision. Then again, I may never decide which is best, and I’m alright with that too. So far I’m thinking there isn’t a throwaway song on the album.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

Ahhhhhh! I want more! I want them all!!! Right NOW!

  • Michelle

Daughtry’s the easy comparison but I don’t think it’s accurate. It’s like saying Archie’s music is like Jordin’s because they are both teenagers putting out pop Idol albums. There’s lots of room within a genre.

I don’t hear any throwaway songs either (based on the snippets) and that’s pretty rare for me.

  • frogcooke

well so far from the clips(still need to hear whole songs lol)
Im liking, LOTM, Avalanche, Hereos, ADA and declaration. I like those the best so far. Lie isnt bad either, the rest definately need to hear more of to gauge it lol

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the easy comparison but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s accurate. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like saying Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music is like Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because they are both teenagers putting out pop Idol albums. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lots of room within a genre.

    Amen sistah!!

I agree that “Permanent” and “Bar-ba-sol” grab you right off the bat. They have definitive sounds that are easily recognizable.

I hate judging off 30 second clips, but I’d say that of the ones we haven’t heard, I liked “Come Back to Me”, “Bar-ba-sol”, “Lie”, “Avalanche”, and “Permament” the best. I also like “A Dailey AntheM” but I want to hear that full song. :)

  • Joanna

As much as you can base favorites on 30 seconds…I really dig Lie, Permanent, Avalanche, Bar Ba Sol (I mean, it’s a decent shaving cream I guess) and I think I will really like Mr. Sensitive once I can hear the chorus…but I agree with everyone else that there isn’t a throw away song. Here’s the only way I will compare DC with Daughtry: I have Daughtry’s album but I only really like 3 or 4 songs on it. I won’t have that problem with Cook’s album.

  • aly

Awe… I wished I liked it better, I’m a fan of DC and wish him
the best. Sounds like Analog heart, which wasn’t my taste
either. I’ll try them again later. I did kinda like LOTM tho!!
Plus, he did a very good job on SNL. I’m happy for him and
    his fans!!

  • teedubs

This is torture!!! Snippets are pure torture. I love him. I know it’s a prerequisite, but holy hell…this is great stuff. It’s a great launching off point for his career. The songs seem to be totally David, but are not predictable. They’re heart felt, but not magic rainbowy. Although I still fancy the magic rainbows!!! I think Bar Ba Sol will get eaten up by Alt Rock fans and radio stations. Fingers crossed. I love that song! Declaration…thud…it’s fantastic. Get’s me every time. Can’t wait until November 18th!!!

  • reinharv

Well, I loved all of the songs I heard even if it was just 30 seconds’ worth. As I start listening, I’m thinking…Ok, this is really good…then the next one comes up and then I like that one….My head is spinning. I am so glad this is Classic David Cook (except for LO and naturally magic rainbows…) Cook doesn’t sound anything like Daughtry. The only similarity is they were both on A.I. Of course Daughtry is doing great, but he’s Daughtry and Cook is Cook. Cook’s voice is totally different and the sound is different for me.

I don’t hate LO, it’s good but not really classic Cook and it was called a “transition” song whatever that means?? The rest of the stuff is pure Cook from what I hear and I definitely hear Analog Heart/Axium, etc.

I think I’m buying into that conspiracy theory (LOL) that Cook had to sing a song that Cornell did to make up for Billie Jean. :idea_wp:

I heard Cook wrote all of the stuff, except LO and of course magic rainbows. Why or why didn’t they release Declaration as his first single??? :exclaim_ee:

  • hollygo9

Please sir, can I have some more? Is it 11/18 yet?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the easy comparison but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s accurate.

Absolutely. Daughtry’s voice is pretty one-dimensional, and I don’t recall him emoting…as successfully as David. Plus, he’s got a….”goaty” sound that leaks out every now and then. Also…also David’s voice seems to be more well-rounded than Chris’. Could very well be the high-school-choir training that aids him there.

Alas, I understand. Daughtry’s the only “successful” ruler from AI as far as rockers go. He’s good…don’t get me wrong. But, there’s quite the distinction there. I actually voted for Chris on AI, but I never purchased the album. I just doesn’t hold that appeal for me.

That’s why I balk when there’s the comparison. Those two, although they’ll probably dwell in the same genre, are like apples and oranges for me.

  • wordnerdarchie

Im liking, LOTM, Avalanche, Hereos, ADA and declaration. I like those the best so far. Lie isnt bad either,

Well, frogcooke, we have similar tastes. I have LOTM, Avalanche, Hereos, ADA, Declaration, Come Back To Me and Bar-Ba-Sol in my love list along with Lie. I like the rest but need to hear more of Mr. Sensitive (Not sure how I feel about that one), I Did it For You (I’d like to hear the chorus/bridge) and Permanent (this might be too emotional for me, and then I get uncomfortable, so we’ll see).

Light On and TOML I’ve always loved and we have the full studio versions, so I’m keeping them separate from above.

Final scorecard = 10/13 are definite hits with me, with just three that I need to hear the full song. Homerun for Mr. David Cook.

  • luci

love all the songs except Lo what a big surprise, it wasn’t written by him.

  • ShariG

Okay, I have to be honest. I love every snippet on the CD and can’t wait to hear the full songs. There isn’t one I don’t like. I know. I am hopelessly devoted to DC. But there are a few that stand out for me. I love Declaration because we got to hear him sing it live and the studio version seems to be really great. I really liked Avalanche which seems to be the one just violin, guitar and David’s voice. I also liked Lie alot. Permanent seems like a tear jerker and Come Back to Me sounds like a David Cook song I can really get into. So, I guess my critique is really pretty useless because really anything he sings is in my top 10 or 25 or whatever. I actually like Light On very much. I love the story in it and David rocks the song. I do agree with reinharv though, of all of the songs on the CD it is the one that sounds the least like David Cook and I really which they had let him release Declaration as the first single. But, that having been said, he can truly sing anything and music is meant to be shared so while I am impressed at his writing, it doesn’t bother me in the least if he sings something written by someone else as long as he can connect with it on an emotional level. He didn’t write anything on AI yet I loved every song he sang and prefer my DC downloads to anything on the hit stations right now including Daughtry. They sing from the same genre. Other than that, they each have their own style and their own voice. The comparisons are natural I guess since they are both AI alums and both rockers, but for anyone who likes Rock you can certainly hear the difference. I suppose people who like Disney music can hear the difference between Miley Cyrus and the girls from High School Musical, but it all sounds pretty much the same to me. It’s all a matter of what touches you. Everything David Cook sings touches me.

  • leome

does this sound like his album? Not starting idol comparisons, just wondering if I should listen to/buy Daughtry.

Songs like Light On and Declaration, and the 30 seconds of Heroes, Bar-ba-sol, Life On The Moon, Permanent would sound very out of place in Daughtry’s album, IMO, not really the same type of rock.
But I can’t really say what does this sound like. More like Lifehous, Snow Patrol maybe.

  • treble

Other than Light On, the songs lean slightly to the alternative side of mainstream pop rock, edging a bit closer to Foo Fighters and Goo Goo Dolls than Hinder and company. I attribute that to Cook’s more melodic phrasing and Cavallo’s production.

Mr. Sensitive? An ode to Simon Cowell?

  • YellowClouds

I think it’s common for pop fans to catagorize anything rock as Daughtry. They’re most likely unaware of the non-top40 rock music universe so anything with drums, electric guitar and a manly voice is catagorized as Daughtry for them.

This one is not even close.
I mean, seriously, where would a song like Permanent fit on Daughtry’s album?? ..if he even tried to take on Declaration he would have been out of breath by the second verse. DC’s album has a whole different set of influences from punk to alt-rock. I’m hearing OLP, U2, Snow Patrol, Lifehouse… and loving it.

ETA: I see I’m repeating some of the things above my post, sorry I didn’t catch up but I’m glad I’m not alone on this.

I really need my life back.

  • redridinghood

I literally teared up when I started listening. I’m so proud of David T__T

The song that stood out to me the most is Come Back to Me.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

I love the snippets. David and company are really torturing us today. First, 15 seconds of MV, now 30 seconds for each song LOL.

It’s hard to judge form 30 second snippets, but I love A Daily AntheM..

  • noctem seizure

They’re all singles! Ok, I was dead wrong in my blind assessment of what this album would be like, I thought it would sell adequately, and have a chance at garnering some critical praise. Instead, I now think it will be critically dismissed, but will sell like mad.

And for the love of god, please don’t make Declaration the second single if it sounds like that on the album. That’s the only clip I didn’t like. Mr. Cavallo, what did you do to that song?! His first single is currently taking a bit of a while to catch on, and I think there are ten other tracks on that record that I think would blow up immediately if they were released as the followup. But, I don’t know if THIS version of Declaration will….

ETA: All right, upon second listen, I overreacted to what I heard of Declaration. I just didn’t like Andy’s (and Kyle’s?) high-pitched harmony echo on the second verse. It’s cheesy!

  • CathyMK

But I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really say what does this sound like.

It sounds like David Cook. :smile2_ee:

As DC himself said, undeniably him.

  • Autumn

Video for Light On will be up on DCO at midnight

    Which time zone?????? :jittery_tb:

  • Dlynne

I think Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m buying into that conspiracy theory (LOL) that Cook had to sing a song that Cornell did to make up for Billie Jean.

That thought has crossed my mind. I like it, but I don’t LOVE it.

I can say that I LOVE the rest of the album, though. Even magic rainbow. Maybe I’ll like LO more after I see the video.

I seriously can’t wait til the album drops!

  • FolkFan

It’s hard to say based on 30-second snippets, but I know that my immediate reaction was that this collection of songs managed to show variety but still hang together as a cohesive group, so I don’t agree with your assessment at all, Noctem. I mean, I hope that it sells like mad—which would be great—but I don’t see it all as simply a bunch of singles.

  • Jolene

    It sounds like David Cook.

As DC himself said, undeniably him

    Why yes, yes it does.

I know that as a fan I may not be objective, but these snippets remind me of only one thing, and that thing is David’s last album.

I think he very much knows who he is as a musician, and thank goodness, contrary to the old popular belief, winning Idol didn’t force him to become anything he’s not. I think we can safely say this is the record David Cook wanted to make.

(Well, except for some Magic Rainbows).

  • templeton

DCO just says the video will premiere at midnight. I’m hoping EST.

  • ShariG

It was Permanent that was just violin, piano, and David, not Avalanche. Don’t know where I got that. I loved the melody. Definitely a tear jerker. I agree with everyone who said we need more, but how fun to get a feel for the CD.

  • redridinghood

I’m so so relieved that I love the songs instead of forcing myself because I’m a ‘fan’.

Heroes, after seeing the fan video, it stands out a lot more.
    Bar-ba-sol is rockin’!
Permanent, I like the rawness of David’s voice.
    Lie sounds Lifehouse-y.

I can’t wait for the album. This has really made my day :)

  • JohnM

And for the love of god, please donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make Declaration the second single if it sounds like that on the album. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the only clip I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like. Mr. Cavallo, what did you do to that song?!

Change “Declaration” to “Light On”, and you’ve hit the nail on the head (except, of course, that the LO Single ship has sailed :sad_wp:). As it is, I couldn’t disagree more — the Declaration clip is quite possibly my favorite of all, because Mr. Cavallo didn’t screw it up the way he did LO. Clean, clear, rockin’, instead of muddy, overdone, insufferable.

I think Declaration would make a fantastic single.

I’m very relieved that a lot of the clips don’t seem as wildly overproduced as LO.

  • sue

I can’t really tell from these short snippets. I am still looking for the Billie Jean, Little Sparrow, Innocent or Always Be My Baby mega-hit sound arrangement that Cookie so cleverly put together. Little Sparrow is still my favorite from Cookie. I think if they really wanted sales they could put the remake of Billie Jean on here. Well they have “Magic Rainbows” and that is selling like hotcakes. I guess I prefer the softer rock and more melodic. Again it’s too early to tell and 30 seconds isn’t enough. Yeah I need to hear more. So far “Permanent”, “Lie” and “The Daily Anthem” sounds a bit interesting.

  • gingerly

I guess having heard his earlier work that I expected what he did on Idol wasn’t ever going to be what he did on his record. I guess also too (tm Sarah Palin) that I didn’t want it to be. I’m liking what I heard because based on his earlier work and what I believe to be his more mature voice, it all works for me. I do believe this record is about him and it really fits what I expected of him, albeit with a much prettier voice that I think he’s not afraid to show after Idol. That’s about all I can gather with the snippets.

  • Michelle

I think if they really wanted sales they could put the remake of Billie Jean on here.

I think they thought they were doing that with Light On :innocent1_tb:

Ok, listening through several more times, I am now starting to form a more substantive criticism of what I’m hearing. “Declaration” is the only up-tempo song that I can discern. How did that escape everyone’s notice– especially you, Rob? Everything else is mid-tempo, albeit in varying degrees of “rockness”, or a ballad. Oh, there are a lot of ballads on here. Arguably, every song after “Bar-bi-sol” could be considered to be a ballad.

I am sticking by my opinion that every song individually has big hit potential, but, in terms of track selection and album composition what I’m now hearing is a lot of, dare I say it… repetitiveness. And what I am NOT sure that I’m sticking by anymore is my snap sales prediction. I don’t know, maybe the full-length songs will sound entirely different. I don’t know. I don’t know….

  • qbaloo

Come Back To Me, Life on the Moon and Daily Anthem sound great even with only a 30 second listen. His lower register sounds lovely on these songs. Looking forward to hearing the album in full. I think DC should be proud of this album… he managed to put alot of himself into it and with so little time. I hope the album does well.

  • dahirsh

And now Noctem has me worrying about the reviews. It’s gonna be a long two weeks

    I don’t shop by reviews, but still…

  • Mia

Based upon what I have heard, this is my take. Songs are very radio friendly. Lyrics are vintage Cook. I am not sure if they will have the same complexity as AH.

The record is cohesive in the sense that all songs have the same feel, coming from the same genres and somewhat similar tempo.

Here’s my prediction of it’s success.

Considering the general drop in Album sales over the last 3 years, Daughtry like numbers are definitely out of reach for David and for any other artists releasing this year.

I belive it will be in top 10 in Album sales amongst the albums released this year. I am projecting sales of just over a million. Curiously, the album has the potential to sell singles like Pop although it is a Rock record.

As far as critical success goes. It will be a mixed bag. I expect New York media to trash it,
I suspect Rollingstone will look upon it favorably. There is something good in the album for every critic and I expect positive reviews towards specific singles.

I expect DC to have enough success to be able to make his second major label record.

  • hollygo9

reviews schmeviews…sales, singles and hawt videos are all that matter. David Cook for the m-er-f-in win.

  • FolkFan

Here’s what we know about the reviews so far: the RS pre-review of the record was positive; the Billboard review of LO was very positive; and the USA Today review of Analog Heart was positive. I don’t get why anyone would be worried today that the reviews of the record would be negative, and certainly not why those reviews would somehow be so negative as to negate the positive reactions that we’re seeing in various places on the web from non-AI watchers who saw him on SNL playing the two songs about which noctem was most negative. I’d also say that, of the 12 songs, DC accurately described LO as being in the middle of the pack in terms of hardness, which means that there is plenty of variety in the songs to intrigue a listener or reviewer.

  • colette

I’m kinda with Sue on this. I like the songs that are less metallic, and where you can hear DC’s voice in its most natural range.

I know I’m going to p-off some folks here, but I find many of these songs predictable, generic and shrieky. Subtley took a hike — in the lyrics, and in the arrangements.

OK, I get it. DC wants to be a hard rocker, with little dabs of lyricism in there. But he’s going to blow out his voice if he doesn’t stop screaming. And at least in a first hearing, there’s no really memorable, captivating take-out tune that you can imagine listening to again and again with increasing pleasure.

I’m seeing a pattern here, which is that on AI these guys sing mostly familiar songs, and mostly great and classic songs — whether they were written recently and decades ago. Then they gotta make a contemporary record, they are turned loose in a studio with lots of techno toys to play with like kids in a candy store, and there goes the simplicity and subtlety. I’d hoped better for DC, just as I did for Taylor. I hope listening to the full songs will change my mind….

  • Michelle

I guess mileage varies…I don’t consider the snippets “hard” rock at all…IMO it’s radio-friendly pop rock that leans alternative at some points but mostly stays middlerange.

Good reviews are nice, but in the end I only care if I like it. Decent airplay and DC staying his nice winsome press-savvy self will take care of the general public.

  • noctem seizure

If this album fails, it’s on Cavallo and RCA. Cook’s vocals are even better than I’ve heard from him before, and as he proved long before any of us met him, he can write some damn catchy shit. But, Mr. Fucking Grammy Winner Rob Cavallo, at some point doesn’t it occur to you that, goddamn, if we include power ballads like LO in the category of ballads, that we’ve an assembled an album that, arguably, may include NINE of them?! The only songs that I’m completely convinced can’t be considered ballads of one type or another are Declaration, Heroes, and Bar-ba-sol. Take those three songs and pick maybe three or four slow songs from the record and then mix in some other songs with more variety, and you’ve got a terrific mix. Hell, throw Stitches on there if you need to….

I can’t completely absolve DC and the Doctor. They’ve been making music long enough that one of them could have said to the other at some point in the process of putting together the record– “Hey, doesn’t it seem like we’re putting a lot of slow songs on this CD, and shouldn’t we mention this to Rob and the suits at 19/RCA…?”

But, on the other hand, DC has already shown he can construct and arrange a pretty good little record on his own. So, if my impression of what I’m hearing is correct and that becomes the public impression of this album overall, the preponderance of blame falls on the shoulders of Cavallo and the label.

  • littlepark

Nothing here strikes me as hard or metallic or any variation of that. My first concert was NIN – now that was hard. \m/ This is simple pop-rock. That said, the only one I like so far is “Bar ba sol”

  • elisad

Nobody warned me what I’d wake up to…

DCO just says the video will premiere at midnight. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hoping EST.

    I say Hawaii time.

I heard that last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s guests (was it Fall Out Boy?) sang 10-12 songs during the Wright Gala.

Um, wow. That’s a lot more than I thought.

Hard to judge from 30s clips, I’m a “verse person”. But I like them all. Favorite: no doubt Bar-ba-sol. Not shocking, my fave from AH is Porcelain. They are very David especially the lyrics, I can’t tell who co-wrote which.

A Daily AntheM – Imagine David cry when the crowd “sing along”. This probably will be my 2nd fave. I think David played guitar in it.

Come Back To Me – “Wind in your hair”, do you watch ANTM, David?

  • YellowClouds

Well.. by your definitions, 90% of what DC sang on the show (and 80% of the tour) is a mid-tempo/ballad.. and I don’t remember anyone complaining about that.

  • leome

Noctem, what’s exactly a slow song for you? I know it’s just 30 seconds, but from the ones I remember, Come Back To Me and A Daily Anthem didn’t sound slow or ballads.
I’ve listened to every song 3 times and I’m not going to listen to anymore, so maybe that’s a wrong impression, but…

As for reviews, I’m not expecting good reviews. For the most part it seems generic album, there are 3/4 songs that stand out (from 30 seconds only) but that’s about it.
But who would have made better given the time and ciscunstances? And who would expect the AI winner to put heavy rock? I’m surprise Bar-Ba-Sol is even there.
I’m expecting Breathe Tonight to be more like Bar-Ba-Sol and those two can be closer to what he might do with his second album (if he has a second album).
    Speculations…

  • kathrynTX

Can I just say to noctem – I really like reading your input on here. I’m not always ITA with ya but you often surprise me with something I never woulda thunk about on my own.

SO ANYWAY…I’ve listened A LOT to Analog Heart, select Axium, some MWK. I’ve listened A LOT to Cook’s AI stuff too, live versions and studio. I saw him 3 times on the Idol tour. I WISH I’d seen him BEFORE Idol, dammit. I’ve listened to our snippets a bunch.

Personally, I 100% expect to want to listen to this new record over & over & over. I expect I will hear something new in each song the 2nd or 10th or 26th or 107th time I listen to them. This is all so interesting to me personally mainly because before I saw Cook on Idol, I listened to primarily mainstream country and some not-so-mainstream artists like Radney Foster, Kevin Welch, John Hiatt, Charlie Sexton just for a few examples. I started out as a huge rock fan (long long ago), drifted away, lost interest in music mostly, found a little bit I liked for awhile, lost it again. I don’t think I can explain here, in writing, what Cook’s music has meant to me. And I don’t really know entirely why or how he got me all interested & excited & INVESTED in music again. But he did and I thank him. Again.

I did NOT expect this new album to sound like Axium or Analog Heart and DEFINITELY not like anything that he sang on Idol. I would have been very surprised if there were any new songs that sounded something like ABMB or Little Sparrow or even Billie Jean on here. And no way did I think any of the specific songs he sang on Idol would be on this album. Actually, I’m kinda surprised that TOML got on there after all! I DID expect something new from David Cook. And that’s what I think I’m getting. And I think I’m gonna F-ING-LOVEIT.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Well, I’ll hold on to my assessment that some those who fell in love with David Cook for his American Idol performances will probably not be huge fans of the album. What we appear to be getting now – which seems like the “true” David – is not who he was on Idol, I believe. So, I’m not expecting ABMB or Hello, which involved him turning someone else’s song into something else. That’s a whole other level of creativity.

  • Aileen

I am at a point where I really don’t care about reviews or sales figures. I am just so happy that David got to do the record that is so undeniably him even after he won American Idol. When he won, I was convinced that TPTB will force him to put out an album full of Billie Jeans, ABMB’s, Little Sparrows, and TOML’s. Don’t get me wrong, I love all those songs from David, but it’s not what he wants to do.

He is putting out a very solid first album where he wrote most of the songs. I have no doubt it will sell well. Whether he will be putting out another album is not even a question in my mind. There are plenty people in the music industry that recognize David’s talent. The best thing is that he will be creating music that he wants to make.

David is a winner. He also has a very good perspective on what’s important in life having lived through many life and death situations in his life. Sky high sales, selling more than Archie or Daughtry is completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It may be important to his fans who live and breathe AI, i.e. (my favorite has to outsell your favorite, or he will be dropped and be considered a failure and I will look and feel like a loser because I backed the wrong person), but I really don’t believe it’s all that vital.

He’s putting out a major label album, and the song he wrote about Adam is on it. His heart and soul are in this album. This is what is important. This is why David wanted to put out an album that was so him. Just from snippets of the songs, there is no denying he got what he wanted and I’m in awe that RCA allowed it.

I understand that I wont change anyone’s mind about “he’s got to sell singles, albums, downloads or else” mentality, but personally I couldn’t be more thrilled for him.

My prediction is that the album will sell very well and will exceed many fan expectations. David will continue to impress people that he meets and gain respect in the music industry. He will have many surprises for us in the future and the fans who choose to accept him the way he is will be fans for life.

After listening to all the snippets, A Daily AntheM sounds most like Analog Heart. I hear a cohesive album rather than all singles. Barbasol is the most interesting structurally. I really like every song. Although I love TOML, it doesn’t belong on the album. So that’s my only gripe.

    I can’t wait until November 18th. :)

  • FolkFan

That was a phenomenal post, Aileen. You really reminded me of what a debut record (which, for most of the world, is what this record will be) is: a chance for the artist to make a statement about who he or she is. And I think that you’re right, that DC managed to do that.

  • YellowClouds

I am at a point where I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care about reviews or sales figures. I am just so happy that David got to do the record that is so undeniably him even after he won American Idol.

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s putting out a major label album, and the song he wrote about Adam is on it. His heart and soul are in this album. This is what is important.

This is exactly how I feel.

I hear a lot of David on these clips. That’s all I was hoping for, really. I didn’t get that with LO and that made me a bit nervous… but it’s there. *sigh*. And that’s HUGE for an idol debut. We should be grateful.

So is the perfect 50:50 ratio between uptempos and ballads really important when we have great songs that are all David?

  • daenarys

I think there’s a large part of the public out there (which I’m firmly in. Hee) who are not bothered by genres or tempos or critics or whatotherpeoplelike when they buy music – i’m absolutely in the “I like what I like” camp. And so far, these 30-second-Cookie-cracks? LOVE EVERY SONG. Which is kind of freaking me out because this hasn’t happened to me in a looooooong time. It’s not just the melodies / his voice, there’s a poignancy that runs in the snapshots of the lyrics that just gets to me. That song “Lie” for instance, I know exactly what he means. In 30 seconds he just summarised what I wanted to tell someone. That. Made the hairs on my neck stand up.

I’m crazy about Bar-Ba-Sol – it’s such a cool bluesy balls to wall rock number that I think can fly on all formats, even with its harder sound. My dad and brothers already think it’s awesome! The lyrics are kind of WTF? It’s the only song that I can’t tell what it has to say. David’s joke on us. Maybe that’s the whole point *LOL*.

I loved Light On because to my ears it has a lot of the 80s rock sounds in it – some Eagles, some Journey, melodic, straight up simple lyrics, that sort of thing. And now having heard the rest of the album, it’s my least favourite song! I can already tell I’m gonna frakking love this album and will probably wear it out to bits.

  • cheese

OK, finally got to listen. Permanent and Barbasol are the biggest standouts for me and I really like Declaration, Avalanche, Lie and A Daily Anthem. I’m really curious about “Come Back To Me” since Rolling Stone referred to it as “U2-esque” – I can’t really tell without hearing more. I usually skip half the tracks on almost any record, so I find this ratio to be pretty good.

I need to hear more of Mr. Sensitive, Heroes, I Did It For You and Life on the Moon, probably because we’re missing the chorus.

A lot of the songs do have a similar tempo, but just by having Barbasol, Permanent, Declaration and Lie all on the same record, David achieved more stylistic variety than Daughtry did (his sales didn’t exactly suffer as a result of recording the same two or three songs over and over). I was sort of stricken by how much a couple of songs reminded me of Lifehouse, musically. But I’d rather be reminded of Lifehouse than, say, Hinder, so I’ll take it. And actually, it’s not that surprising of a progression from Analog Heart. I wasn’t expecting him to sound like Cold War Kids or something.

Oh, and pretty much everything sounds more Top 40 friendly to me than Light On does.

  • sunchick

I also enjoy reading your assessments, noctem, but what I’m thinking is that Analog Heart wasn’t exactly head bangin’. It’s pretty much mostly mid-tempo songs and ballads, save what? Let Go, Stitches, maybe Porcelain. I don’t even think Stitches is really all that uptempo though it’s definitely a harder sound. I suppose then I’m not really sharing your shock and dismay because, based on these snippets, these songs appear to have directly evolved from Analog Heart with a pinch of the more melodic side of David we discovered with his take on songs like ABMB and World I Know during Idol. In fact, I’m thinking Slezak will love this record because that ABMB side of Cook is what he was jonesing for and found lacking in Light On, and I can see that side in one, maybe two tracks.

Anyway, work is a cruel, fickle bitch. Last week it was slow as hell and I could jump online often. But today…busy, and all of my favorite PITAS came into the office at once. Consequenty, these snippets have been online all day and I’m just now getting to hear them. *shakes fist at the universe* Ah, but what a pleasant surprise. THe weird thing is that the song titles that originally intrigued me the most, Bar Ba Sol, ADAM, Permanent, and Declaration, are also the song snippets (or in the case of Declaration, actual song) that intrigue me the most. Bar Ba Sol is going to be my favorite. Feel pretty confident calling that. Permanent, damn. I think I will have my hair standing up on the back of my neck moment with that one. I love how those first ten to fifteen seconds almost sound more like a conversation than a melody, very intimate. And the word Permanent, and the way he sings it…such a Cook thing to convey a plethora of emmotions with one very well chosen word. Everything is fleeting, even life, but…. I’m Permanent. Verklempt. I’m surprised I like what I heard of Heroes because I thought the title sounded a little trite. The “heroes come and go, but you’re still standing…” though, reminded me of Joe Paterno, and I could imagine it playing with a JoePa tribute montage I recently saw on ABC sports, and how could I not get behind that? Least favorite right now is Avalanche. I would have rather seen Better Never Than Late make the record because I think it is potentially a better song, and feel like it could have easily slid into Avalanche’s slot. All in all, though, based on the very short snippets I am envisioning a cohesive, easily relatable record with twists and turns that more often than not came from somewhere inside David rather than being thrust upon him. Works for me. :happy_tb:

ETA: I should have saved myself the time and wrote “what Aileen said.” You really cut to the heart of the matter.

  • Jolene

Aileen, That was just lovely and so so true. I’m one of those fans who tend to get caught up and distressed with numbers and chart positions and worst case scenarios, and I think the next time I do, I might just go back and read your post again. Thank you.

  • IndyMuse

Aileen, great post. ITA, what matters is great music, and that appears to be abundant here. As far as tempo, I keep thinking of some of the Axium songs. Many of them have varied tempo, with slow, ballad-y parts and faster, harder parts. I am not sure we can be certain all is as it appears from such short snippets. That’s one of the things I love about Cook’s songs; they vary in tempo, dynamic level, and hardness. It makes them more interesting than most of what is out there. I am loving Declaration, by the way.

  • http://www.myspace.com/wn780 k4dc

After all the waiting and all the angst, it’s so great to hear these snippets. I love Analog Heart, and Axium, to the point that they are STILL almost the only thing I listen to, after MONTHS. I’ve been waiting SOOOOOO impatiently for this new music, and the joy and relief I feel is palpable. I’m going to LOVE the album. It is, to me, a natural progression forward from Analog Heart. The voice, the emotion, the lyrical play…I cannot WAIT until November 18!!

I do get caught up in the numbers game, just like everyone else, but I have to keep reminding myself that no matter how David does, he is a true musician, and he will ALWAYS make music. Even if he has to go back to indie music. And I say, as long as I can hear him sing, I don’t care what the circumstances. Hey, if indie music can produce an album like AH, there’s nothing wrong with that!

(That, of course, will never happen. David’s popularity will continue to grow. Not even U2 was an instant success straight out of the gate. These things take time. But this is a FABULOUS start.)

  • cookcricket

Okay, true dieahard DC fan here! I. cannot. wait. to. hear. songs. in entirety!

    Brief thoughts on each:

Declaration: I already know I love this! (SNL) Probably better live, but I imagine they all will be.

Heroes: Simply Awesome! The tube clip makes it even better.

Light On: LOL. Didn’t love at first. I’m kinda thinking it may have been a smart pick for a single, even though others are better. Reason? The more you hear a song, the more you like it (IMO) because it can grow on you and you can get used to the sound. It may have gotten buried otherwise…Really well done live.

Come Back to Me: Is anyone else catching an ABMB vibe with this?(i.e. you’ll always be mine, and I’m always here for you?)

LOTM: Definately catchy words. Hungering for the rest of the song.

Bar-ba-sol: Another simply awesome song!!!! WooHoo!:)

    Mr. Sensitive: Liking the words…

Lie: Lifehouse-y sound(?). I love Lifehouse

I Did For You: Complete guess here and probably way off base, but wondering if it’s for his brother Andrew!?!?

    Avelanche: Sounds awesome

Permanent: I need to hear more, but knowing it’s supposed to be for his grandfather, I don’t think it can go wrong.

A Daily AntheM: Um, well, if I don’t need the tissues now, I will with the entire song.

So, in conclusion: I don’t think this album can go wrong. As many have said, “Is it Nov. 18th yet?”

I am psyched!!!!!!!!!! Can snippets tell anything? For me they say, bring it on!!!

Side note: Haven’t read any recent comments. I didn’t think I ‘d be staying up for the vid, but LOL, it’s almost midnight. I hope it’s EST! Otherwise, I won’t make it.

MJ: You have done it once again! You have given us what we want! I just can’t understand how anyone would want to wait when a taste is right in front of us, but that’s just me…. :jittery_tb: LOL, I’m not crazy about this smiley, but REALLY it’s just how I’m feeling right now! Off to DCO!!!! I hope I can get on.

    Big Breath….

  • CathyMK

if we include power ballads like LO in the category of ballads, that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve an assembled an album that, arguably, may include NINE of them?!

Umm- we’re hearing 30 seconds of each song. There’s nothing to tell us if this is the fastest or slowest 30 seconds. If we heard only the piano and voice part of LO we’d have a completely wrong impression of what the song is like. This is my problem with 30 second samples, and why I don’t make purchasing decisions based on them anymore. It’s fun to have a taste of the album, but I’m not deciding which songs I love most until I hear the whole thing. I’m with MJ- for an Idol’s first record, just not sucking is a big enough goal, given the time constraints and recording conditions. I truly love AH’s lyrics, but I’m guessing that David just won’t have had the time he needed to write lyrics that complex for this album. That probably holds true for any aspect of the record. Hopefully record #2 will be written completely by David and Neal, and maybe produced by them as well. That’s when I’m raising my expectations.

  • mac
  • Lisa

I loved the video!!! Course I also love Light On!!! Way to Go David!! :clap_tb:

  • Trina

Holy god he looks hot! What? Too shallow?

  • cookcricket

Trina, I can’t help but think this vid is going to bring some teens to some great rock music! But, OH YEAH, he was hot!!!!!! IMO, if we can’t be shallow about these things sometimes, well so much for some fun in life! LOL!

  • Jolene

Aaaaaaaaaaaaack, why is the video restricted to the US?
    Bwah.

  • Suzanne

Just listened to the snippets. I like most of these songs much more than I thought I would after seeing SNL. Especially surprised by Declaration. I thought the instruments completely overpowered the voices on SNL, but the balance is much better on the CD. I’m really looking forward to the CD.

BTW–I can’t figure out how to make the video play. Maybe it’s because I use firefox? So I went over to Davidcookofficial.com (WOW–is that site WAY better than davidarchuleta.com!) and it just links over to iheartmusic, which won’t play the video for me. Guess I’ll wait until someone rips it and puts it on youtube.

  • FolkFan

Suzanne: The TWoP thread on DCO has a youtube link, but I think that it has maybe migrated over to the new video thread that MJ put up here?

  • noctem seizure

Noctem, whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s exactly a slow song for you?

As obvious as this may sound, my answer is that it’s a slow song if I can see people slow dancing to it. I can’t really see slow-dancing to LO, so I’ll group that with Declaration, Heroes, and Bar-ba-sol. Thus my final count (based on what I’ve heard so far) is eight such songs overall. And since Declaration, Heroes, and LO are the first three songs on the record, that’s eight of its last nine that I could see working as the closing number of a junior-senior prom.

I have never had such a bipolar reaction to an album before. If I put all these tracks on my MP3 player and set it on random so they were mixed in with all my other music, I will probably love every single one when they come up. But, if I listen to them in succession, in the order they appear on the CD…– well, I probably won’t ever do that except just once, the day the album arrives in the mail….

And from the bizarre album composition the CD appears to have, it’s as if Rob Cavallo couldn’t have listened to these songs consecutively any more than once, either. Or else he sees David Cook as some sort of slightly alt-rock version of Bon Jovi, (who also writes a mean ballad, and LOTS of them)….

Anyway, I’m going to try to leave this topic alone now. I don’t want to color anyone else’s impression about the album or detract from their excitement about it anymore than I already may have. I hope NOBODY else on the planet shares my perception of this CD, actually.

  • Trina

I just don’t get how it’s possible to judge an entire album based on 30 second snippets. I love hearing any sort of sampling of things to come but many times in the past I’ve listened to clips only to have a completely different opinion when I listened to the complete album. In fact I’m purposely avoiding listening to these brief clips all that much because I rather wait until full songs appear.

  • redridinghood

noctem, I understand what you’re saying. Tracks 8-10 sound really similar. Maybe there should be another type of song inserted in there. Cos for a while I couldn’t tell those 3 apart. I don’t want to say they sound like one continuous song but that’s how it sounded to me at the first listen.

Overall though, I really like what I’ve listened to so far. And hopefully, the complete songs will sound even better and solid together.

  • 123abc456

noctem, I think you should wait to hear the entire song/songs before you make an assessment, it was only 30 seconds of each song I loved what I have heard so far but I have to hear the whole song before my final judgement.

I know one album of David Cooks that I have listened to hundreds of times, Analog Heart, I love it and I would say that most of the songs have a slower tempo to them except a few. Let Go is the hardest rocking song on the album and my favorite but most of the other songs are not like Let Go.

So two weeks guys and then many listens before I really know what I think of this record but I have a gut feeling I will love it.

  • Layla

I broke down and listened to the snippets…so far I am loving

    Bar Ba Sol
    Mr Sensitive
    Permanent
    A Daily AntheM

And I really like the others…hoping for love as soon as I get the record.

Based on 30 seconds, it is impossible to say whether the order in which they are placed sounds right or not. I would imagine that hearing the songs in their entierety should take place, before I make such a random observation.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Personally, I’m just glad that the album doesn’t sound at all like it majorly sucks. Throw something together in less than six months, and that’s always a possibility.

Noctem, I understand what you mean, but after listening those clips the impression I got was exactly the opposite of yours. I think the album has more different stuff (in the same genre) than most AI albuns I’ve listened to. That was what stood out for me from those 30 seconds of each song.
I think we can put Heroes, Light On, Bar-ba-Sol, Permanent and Lie all in different bags. Even Come Back To Me seems to go to a different place than those 5, but that’s still to be seen.
Like someone said before, maybe songs 8,9 and 10 seem to be the more alike and they could have been placed differently. I don’t know, will have to listen to the full songs to be sure. But speculating it’s still fun.
The first half seems stronger than the second half.

And with this I’ve ended up listening to those songs more than I wanted to…

  • cheese

I’m trying to figure out who co-wrote what, and I have to admit, I’m completely stumped. I’ll going to say Johnny Rzeznik co-wrote “Lie,” and I can’t figure out which one would be Cathy Dennis. Nothing is screaming “Toxic” or “I Kissed a Girl” at me, lol.

  • Michelle

Okay! I managed to burn them onto a cd for the car test. I think Come Back To Me is gonna be one of my favorites. I can see where the U2 comparison comes in cause there are some big sweeping strings going on. BarBaSol is gonna be interesting cause I suspect it’s a commentary on the Idol experience :)

I sort of agree that Lie, I Did It For You, and Avalanche are all kind of similar sounding…but we’ll find out when the full songs are available. Snippets can be deceiving.

  • http://www.myspace.com/wn780 k4dc

OK, I’m now completely in love with “Permanent” and “A Daily Anthem.” “Heroes” and “Bar-Ba-Sol” rock my world too. I seriously don’t hear a song I don’t like. That doesn’t happen very often for me. (Last time, it was Analog Heart, imagine that.)

I can’t even listen to my Daughtry album anymore. It pales by comparison.

  • kathrynTX

    Yeah. What Aileen said…

David is a winner. He also has a very good perspective on whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s important in life having lived through many life and death situations in his life. Sky high sales, selling more than Archie or Daughtry is completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It may be important to his fans who live and breathe AI…but I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all that vital.

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s putting out a major label album, and the song he wrote about Adam is on it. His heart and soul are in this album. This is what is important. This is why David wanted to put out an album that was so him. [T]here is no denying he got what he wanted and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in awe that RCA allowed it.

Thank GOODNESS that he got to make the record he wanted to make! I mean, how could TPTB deny his talent and the obvious attraction to that of so many fans already? Thank goodness someone saw fit to let Cook’s talent and instincts guide this major-label debut. Thank you, David Cook, most of all. YAY.

  • Keel

After listening again (more than a few times) to the snippets, I’ve decided the front half of the album (sans Come Back To Me) is very, very good based on the songs we’ve heard in full and very, very promising based on the songs that we’ve only heard snippets. (And that Heroes promo clip on YouTube set to, er, Heroes, is pretty funny but also well done.) The back half of the album sound promising to me ONLY because of Lies (which just grabbed me emotionally from first listen, IDK why; it takes a lot to get me teary eyed), Mr. Sensitive and A Daily Anthem. Now, all of a sudden, I’m not so sure about Permanent (sounds promising but I’m nervous). I’ve decided I’m meh on Avalanche and I Did it for You.

Of course, all this can be very deceiving (snippets are only snippets after all) but I have to say I’m getting really impatient for the album. I need a leak of the album already, dammit!

Dude, the 30s clips made the Daughtry album pale by comparison? I’m not a big Daughtry fan, but damn, that’s kinda harsh. (And whoo for DC!)

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I just got an email from someone who has heard the whole album…

    To paraphrase the comments:

It’s a combination of the emotional songwriting and singing from AH, but with much higher-quality production values and polish and with more hooks, making it more radio friendly than AH.

There are several songs where he rips his guts out emotionally (Permanent). Bar Ba Sol is the hardest rocking track on the CD. “Mr Sensitive” and “Life on the “Moon” are inspired by by his experience with fame.

“Avalanche” was co-written by Kevin Griffin from Better Than Ezra.

It does not sound like “Fly-over rock”.

    ****

    Not much, but that’s what I got. :) .

I’m not CAPS and !! kinda girl, but OMG, MJ THANK YOU FOR THAT!!

There are several songs where he rips his guts out emotionally (Permanent).

I can barely type because my eyes are all blurry and watery just from reading that. What? I used to be sane… I still try to pretend most days, but right now, I’m not even trying… GUH!

  • Michelle

    It does not sound like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Fly-over rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

    :thumbup_tb:

  • CathyMK

    It does not sound like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Fly-over rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Very cool to hear. I was hoping it wouldn’t be too much like that, but it seemed like too much to ask. I think Daughtry is probably the best of current mainstream corporate rock (I refuse to use the term “flyover”), so even reaching that level would be great this time around (and hopefully marketable as well). Oohh, I hope more of the songs are leaked soon- it’s getting harder and harder to wait! :jittery_tb:

  • Mia

I am teetering between agony and ecstacy. Ecstacy because the songs are ah..so radiant. Agony because they are not in my hands yet. I love them all.

Thank you mj. Sounds good to me. :)

  • dahirsh

Thank you MJ. Anyone remember which songs he is doing for that Walmart thing?

  • FolkFan

Awesome, MJ. Your sources tend to be good, so….

  • Seachange

Anyone remember which songs he is doing for that Walmart thing?

He’s doing Bar-ba-sol (YAY!), Lie and Heroes in addition to Declaration and LO.

    Any update on when?

  • wordnerdarchie

Oops, posting deleted. Information already recorded above.

  • Jolene

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s doing Bar-ba-sol (YAY!), Lie and Heroes in addition to Declaration and LO.

Seriously loving that lineup so much right now. Heroes, Lie and Bar-ba-sol are 3 of my favorites from the snippets, Declaration is my favorite full song (sorry LO). I think this is going to be one amazing set.
    BTW – it’s up on the 15th.

Oh, and there is the David Wright event on the 12th, and I do believe we might get some new songs out of that one as well.

  • daenarys

So he’s not doing my favourites: Life On The Moon, Come Back To Me, Mr Sensitive, A Daily Anthem, Permanent?

Well, at least he’s doing my OTHER favourites: Bar-ba-sol, Lie, Heroes, Declaration and LO.

When is he going to do all the REST of my favourites: I Did It For You, Avalanche, and (yes, everybody say it together) Magic Rainboowwww!!!

Oh, did I mention I’m going to luuuuuuurve this album?!

Sorry guys, I’ve had the 30SecondCookieCracks on a loop since yesterday, and it’s AGONY. I’m not getting cured, I’m getting worse….

  • wordnerdarchie

Lyrics for Bar-Ba-Sol, Lie, Mr. Sensitive, Permanent, and Come Back To Me are posted on the following site compliments of Zephyr11 in DC-42:

Wow, I really love the lyrics for Lie, Bar-ba-Sol and Permanent. I think a lot of people are going to connect to Lie – it had me dwelling on a college relationship that I still insist should not have ended (uh, don’t tell my husband). I can see David performing Permanent on Idol Gives Back in April.

Bar-ba-Sol is just awesome – I’m glad it’s about Idol and not shaving cream.

  • YellowClouds

I’m just dying to know who had a hand in Bar-ba-sol, this song is full of WIN.

  • sma11ie

So heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not doing my favourites: Life On The Moon, Come Back To Me, Mr Sensitive, A Daily Anthem, Permanent?

Bahahaha, daenarys you are hilarious, but soooo right, cuz that’s me too (okay, except maybe the Rainbow)! I think my only early reservation was the phrasing of Permanent in the snippet, but now, I love it. And then it was Come Back to Me that I felt was maybe a bit generic, but I read the lyrics (btw, THANK YOU wordnerdarchie) and now I’m on board with that as well! WOW, so excited for the Walmart Soundcheck! Also the intel we’ll inevitably get from the Wright Thing. This record is going to rock!

  • elisad

The soundcheck thing is on 15th and might be pushed back again.

    So, I’m waiting for David Wright’s Gala, isn’t it 10 song-ish?

  • wordnerdarchie

THANK YOU wordnerdarchie) and now Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m on board with that as well! WOW,

You’re very welcome sma11ie. It sure took a LONG time for anyone to comment here at MJ’s that there were some lyrics posted. I was getting lonely. :mad_tb:

So I had to take up residence in the David Archuleta on-line album streaming thread in order to have some company. :lol_tb:

  • http://www.myspace.com/wn780 k4dc

Yes, thank you wordnerdarchie for the lyrics link! I wonder where they got those from? And where are the rest of them? And how soon can I hear the WHOLE songs? My Cookie crack is wearing off, I need MORE!!!

Yes, the agony and the ecstasy…

  • cookcricket

wordnerdarchie, Are these lyrics from the entire songs? If so, how did they get these?

I know nothing about how that site works…I’m enjoying reading these lyrics though! Thanks!

  • sma11ie

The soundcheck thing is on 15th and might be pushed back again.

It’s getting pushed back again? WHAT?

  • cheese

The lyrics have been making the rounds at fan sites. There are one or two fans with industry connections who have been able to hear the whole album and one of them thoughtfully transcribed the lyrics for many of the songs. I’m not sure that anyone has the official lyrics yet.

  • wordnerdarchie

zephyr11 has connections to RCA and logged in and heard the songs, and posted what she could in DC=42. (Most of what she posted are complete I think.)

  • elisad

Oh, just might, it’s just me guessing it would if they get Nickelback.

I’m so jealous of those two people…

  • sma11ie

I’m REALLY loving the lyrics to Heroes and Permanent… and Life on the Moon… and well, I guess everything else too, haha.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

What do the folks with connections have to say about the album? I’m curious.

  • cheese

mj – One person who heard the album have said that the 30 second snippets don’t really do the songs justice and don’t necessarily reflect the overall vibe of the songs. I think Zephyr11 mentioned that the songs have interesting intros that we’re not hearing in the snippets. I haven’t seen any other comments, but I can’t say I spend a lot of time on the fan sites.

After reading the lyrics, I’m really impressed that RCA supported David writing such highly personal songs, particularly about the whole Idol experience. I certainly never thought I’d hear anything like “Bar-ba-sol” or “Mr. Sensitive” on an Idol album. I can already smell the “Archie is the real winner” stuff in the air, but I’m really happy that David (seemingly) got to make the album he wanted to make.

It must have been pretty amazing for David to write a song like “Permanent” with his own idol. I wonder what the third Raine Maida co-write is?

  • cookcricket

I can already smell the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Archie is the real winnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ stuff in the air, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m really happy that David (seemingly) got to make the album he wanted to make.

If this is the case…YEAH DC!!!! I am SO PROUD to be a fan!!!

  • cookcricket

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m REALLY loving the lyrics to Heroes and Permanentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and Life on the Moonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and well, I guess everything else too, haha.

Are the full lyrics to “Life on the Moon” posted somewhere? Thanks. :)

  • wordnerdarchie

MJ, did you ever post the leak of RCA’s press release of the album? It was posted at D-C.org. http://www.david-cook.org/index.php?showtopic=15363&st=0&gopid=492948& \ entry492948

    Here’s an excerpt:

” à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I went on Idol with a five-card hand and showed three of my cards,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Cook says. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Now ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s time to put down the other two. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a lot I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t shown the world, just as far as who I am and what Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m about. I have several layers as an artist and those layers are out there on this record. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see myself ever writing an autobiography; Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m just going to let the music speak for itself.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

And it does à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ loud and clear. David Cook is a statement-making album, filled with bold, keenly felt songs that showcase Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s powerful vocal chops and considerable songwriting talent, as well as the versatility that made him a star on Idol. The first single à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light On,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with its Southern rock vibe, is light years away from the gut-wrenching ballad à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Permanent,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ which couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be more different than the swaggering shredder à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bar-Ba-Sol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ….(snip)

…..à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“We recorded à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Permanentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ in two takes and everyone in the room was crying,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Cook recalls. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I actually had to leave at one point because it was so emotional. As a musician, any time you can create something where the end result is exactly whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s in your head, well thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a heaviness to that moment and it overwhelmed me. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been writing songs for ten years and that was the first time Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d felt it. I think thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an honesty throughout the record that culminates in that song.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ …..(snip)

…..It shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be too tough given that Cook will be performing the songs on his debut album. Gutsy and epic, but grounded in the personal, the songs are tailor-made for those magical moments when music, whether it be uplifting or heart-breaking, can transport you to another place, which is exactly what Cook intended. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I want my album to be an exhausting experience, in that you listen to it and have to take a breath to collect yourself, and immediately need to listen to it all over again,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he says. “

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    No, I didn’t get that.

Maybe I’ll start a new thread with all these leaks…

  • ra.chatterbox

    I looooooooooooooooooooooove it!!!

I was feeling so-so with his Light On release… it kinda burst my happy DC bubble when I didn’t feel his LO song…. but even though I heard only 30sec snippets from each song— I am back!

    Will definitely buy his album

Hmm… I just feel that DC is not getting much publicity. Sometimes, you produce a great album but if you don’t get the publicity or right amount of marketing—it all goes down the drain.

  • FolkFan

More publicity is coming. One site said that in November he’d be “everywhere.” I imagine that they wanted to give some time to let the election get past, and then we’ll be seeing him a lot. Which, you know, I won’t mind.

  • Deejay

I’m so excited about this album, it’s getting ridiculous.

“Bar-ba-sol” and “Permanent” sound most intriguing. I love the rhythm of “Come Back to Me” and “I Did it for You.” Now that we have lyrics, I also love the lyrics to CBTM. And that part at the beginning of the snippet really gets me: “When you find you, come back to me…” GAH! I love it.

“Mr. Sensitive” should be interesting. I’m also thinking “Lie” will be a tearjerker. I wasn’t as taken by “Life on the Moon” and “Heroes” as most other people here were, but that could easily change with the full songs.

I wonder if the full album will turn up for streaming next week, like Archie’s has…

  • sma11ie

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m REALLY loving the lyrics to Heroes and Permanentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and Life on the Moonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and well, I guess everything else too, haha.

Are the full lyrics to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Life on the Moonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ posted somewhere? Thanks. :)

Oops. I’ve just been listening to that snippet on repeat so much I started imagining the rest of the lyrics– sorry! I love that snippet way too much– I think I saw my original sentence only giving love to Heroes and Permanent and had to sneak my favorite in there, forgetting I don’t know those lyrics yet!

MJ- if you do decide to do a new Cook post, there are a couple of pretty new press photos:

    Cook 1

    Cook 2

    Cook 3

    Cook 4

Ok, maybe I do spend a lot of time at fan sites (well, today anyway)

loved all of the songs. my least fave of all is LO.
