David Cook has canceled the next couple of shows on his tour schedule due to family matters.

David announced the news Saturday night from the stage of his William and Mary college concert, right before performing his single, “Light On”.

“We’re going to take the next couple of shows off,” David told the crowd. He added that he’s only canceled one show in his entire career, and that “I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t have to.”

Today, an announcement on his website made it official:

Colby Sawyer College (New London, NH) and So. Connecticut University (New Haven, CT) Shows Canceled

We are canceling Monday and Tuesday’s shows to allow David time to deal with personal family matters. Please respect his privacy at this time. David would like everyone to rest assured that we are working with the Universities to reschedule the shows that are missed.

Best wishes to David and his family.   Here’s hoping he can return to the road very soon.

David is set to perform on Idol’s Wednesday results show, in a pre-taped appearance.

After reading some of the recaps from fans who attended the Campbell University show on Thursday, I was beginning to wonder if we were going to see some cancellations soon and I see that we have. I got really worried about David and his family after reading a couple of the recaps. In one of the recaps, it was noted that Art the tour manager was asked if this had anything to do with Adam and apparently he told them no, but honestly when this first happened, I’ve kind of been wondering if it really is about him. No matter what it is, my prayers are with David and his family. If the rest of the schedule stays in tact that means his next show is here on Thursday. I know the old saying is that the show must go on, but with everything David has been through with all the crazy stalkers and now this I can easily wait a little longer to see him under different circumstances if that’s what it takes.

ETA: I missed seeing the video at the top of this thread. awww poor guy. That just broke my heart to see him like that. :(

  • Grammie Kari

Thoughts and prayers go out to David and his family. He needs this time away from the road and away from the media.

God be with DC and his family. they are all in my thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to him and I hope everything will be allright.

He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers, I really hope everything turns out ok.

One of the hardest things for me is the fact that David has to put down something he loves doing so much for the family he loves so much. I can’t imagine how difficult this entire thing is for him.

I’m happy he has the family he loves so much and hope he knows that his fans will be supporting him for as long as it takes.

  • Victoria

I’m really, really hoping this isn’t about Adam but I’m afraid it is. This makes me think of that video from a recent show where he got so emotional during Permanent he couldn’t finish the song.

My thoughts and prayers are with David and his family. I hope everything is okay.

  • BootStar

I hope he takes as much time as he needs. Even the consummate trouper needs time to tend to himself and his loved ones. We’ll leave a light on for you, David. Shine on!

  • sassypants

I so hope David can at least find some peace for a few days and I will be saying a prayer for him, the band, and his family. The video hurts to watch. :(

I really hope everything is okay with David Cook and his family. He seems like such a good guy; he does not deserve anything bad to happen to him. My sister and I will be praying for the Cook family tonight.

  • seasonseven

David has been such an inspiration to my family, who had several people close to us pass away recently from cancer. It broke my heart to see him crying on Thursday night. :( My prayers are always with him and his family!

  • bluejeans

THIS. I hope all will be fine in his world no matter what it’s about. Thoughts and prayers for his family. He makes me happy with his music so I hope he is happy too.

  • Sydia

I can’t believe how worried and sad this makes me…Hang in there Cook.

So many difficult things we go through. It’s got to be so much harder to go through them with so many watching. I hope he takes whatever time he needs to get through this. We will certainly leave a light on. Thoughts and prayers are always in the forefront of my mind for David and his family.

  • IGetCranked

No way I can watch the video.. I just feel terribly for the whole family assuming Adam is the reason for this.

Much love warmth and good thoughts to David and his family.

  • BootStar

So do we think AI TPTB will go ahead and show the “Come Back To Me” performance and video clip on Wednesday? Because the lyrics to that song, given the conjecture about why David is taking time off, would just be so, so wrong. I hope they reschedule airing that. (Not to mention that the average viewer doesn’t realize those performances are normally taped ahead of time. I can just imagine the headlines . . . :wallbash_tb:)

  • wfowfowfo

I think you’re over thinking it, BootStar. He’ll want his video shown, the opportunity is too big to waste. What headlines do you suppose would be published? The media is tacky, but not *that* tacky.

Is there definitive word on why he’s taking time off? Everyone’s talking in hushed codes — but I assume we think his brother has taken a turn to the worse? Cancer sucks, rough stuff that. Prayers for everyone in the family.

  • Aileen

I don’t think they will be canceling the AI performance or the video preview as it is part of the planned next single roll out. Canceling will just bring more attention to David’s personal life. If he is just taking a few days and will be back on tour on Thursday, then there is no reason to say anything to the general public. The fact that the performance was taped is not a secret and has been mentioned in numerous articles already. If anything has to be said for whatever reason, it’ll probably just be mentioned that the appearance is pre-taped.

My thoughts and prayers are with David and his family at this time.

  • Victoria

Is there definitive word on why heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taking time off?

All we’ve got is “family reasons” but the Permanent performance, the drawn-on cancer ribbon on his arm, and the fact that many of his fans don’t think he has looked as happy as usual at the last few shows gives me a very bad feeling that it’s about Adam. :glurps_tb:

  • BootStar

I wasn’t really expecting the respectable media (whatever that is these days) to pick up the story, but it just takes one of those obnoxious bloggers with a huge following (e.g., Perez Hilton) to trash DC for canceling his shows “so he can make an appearance on Idol to promote the new single” or something of that ilk.

Yeah, it’s out there and totally paranoid, but I never would have thought that truly benign myspace post David made last week could have been distorted the way it was. And there’s already at least one stupid blogger from one of the colleges DC canceled at going off the deep end.

And then you add that Utada is out promoting her new single, “Come Back To Me,” (just heard her being interviewed this morning by Elvis Duran), and it just gives me a stomach ache. And I’m not normally a Nervous Nelly about these things. Honest!

I need to go take my morning meds. STAT.

  • sunchick

Awww, David. Hope he can deal with whatever he needs to deal with in peace. Sending some good cosmic vibrations to him and his family….

Boot Star, if the media takes that position, I sadly will not be shocked, but I’m hoping that those people get over themselves. Damn gossip vultures.

  • oceana

I was at the performance when David made his announcement, and then he sang Light On as the last song, and it seemed so appropriate. I don’t think he has sang that song last before (I could be wrong). It made the song seem very meaningful. I just love that guy. And hope his heart will heal from whatever is going on.

  • BootStar

oceana, I saw David last Tuesday at Penn State York. I actually had a seat directly behind the soundboard, so I could see the setlist they were working from (I snagged a decent photo of it). “Light On” was actually listed as the final song before the encore, and he was supposed to end with “A Daily AntheM” (ADAM). He changed up the order and ended up closing the concert with “Light On.”

At the time, I was really disappointed that we didn’t get to hear “ADAM,” but the concert was great, although I did note that he seemed “off his game” compared to videos I’d seen of other performances on the Declaration tour. I speculated that maybe he seemed down because he’d been taken to the woodshed by TPTB for that myspace post, but I have to wonder now if what was bothering him was something far more serious than receiving flak from his management.

  • luci

I just hope the press leaves it alone for David’s family’s sake. My prayers go out to David and his family

  • Keel

That blogger was not really ranting at David but rather the campus student activities board. He didn’t want David Cook to be the act that their tiny little college booked, and was pissed that the students weren’t surveyed first before he was booked. And, of course, the cancellation on top of everything else was just one more reason to bitch at the student activities board. I guess the blogger used the cancellation as an opening to talk about why he was too cool for David Cook.

  • s3rious

Hope you’re okay David. We’re all wishing you well.

    God Bless.

  • tinawina

I guess the blogger used the cancellation as an opening to talk about why he was too cool for David Cook

LOL. Yeah well that’s college for you. I’m pretty sure that’s why Cook wanted to do the tour at colleges… trying to soften that market a bit. Oh well.

  • ohnonotagain

David, we love you and you are in our prayers. We know how much family means to you, so take the time but take care of yourself.Your music and your kind heart has been an inspiration to us.How any one could find fault with the blog you did, I just don’t understand.People are cruel but they are in the minority the rest of us support you and God be with you and your family.Feel the love.

  • Trina

You know what? I say let these stupid bloggers and the Perez Hilton’s of the world say what they want. DC is strong and he’ll get by. He shouldn’t have to change his life around or postpone opportunities to keep them quiet because they’ll find reasons to bitch about him anyway.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was actually listed as the final song before the encore, and he was supposed to end with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Daily AntheMà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (ADAM). He changed up the order and ended up closing the concert with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light On.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

He hasn’t sung A Daily AntheM since the the AC show on 3/21.

  • SashaB

Best wishes and prayers to David and his family.

Bloggers and haters will always find a way to condemn David’s actions. They have before and they will now. I hardly give any credence to their opinions. And if they want to slant this private and personal family matter into something twisted, they will. *shrugs*

And I see no reason why AI8 would postpone David’s pretaped “Come Back to Me” performance broadcast. Whether he is on tour or with his family is immaterial to that to the broadcast. He didn’t have a scheduled concert on April 1st – it was already dark day. His next concert is August 2nd – Thursday. And he wasn’t going to be “live” on AI8 anyways. So I’m not really understanding that concern – seems like a non issue.

  • kimberann

There is no reason to postpone the performance for Idol. I highly doubt that would happen.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

And if they want to slant this private and personal family matter into something twisted, they will. *shrugs*

Really, the post was more about slamming the student group that books the acts, rather than a slam on David.

In fact, at one point he says he doesn’t blame David for canceling the gig for a family matter.

He doesn’t care for David’s music? That’s just a matter of opinion, and not a big deal imo.

  • movin2thabeet

As long as Dave is doing OK and is back and ready for his 4/2 show, I see no reason for them to change plans on AI. I hope he’s surrounded by family and friends that love him and that’s he’s finding a way to go through whatever is going on with grace. And then, starting this Wednesday, April 1st, it’s another new beginning with a hot new single that will bring David Cook back into the awareness of millions across the world. Yes!

  • jumpstart

Really, the post was more about slamming the student group that books the acts, rather than a slam on David.

That’s the way I took it as well.

  • sma11ie

I enjoyed reading that student blog, actually. It was interesting to read the campus activities president explain the process they went through to secure DC. I’m not bugged that a college student doesn’t dig DC or want to give him a chance– that’s to be expected, since everyone has different tastes and you can’t win them all. It was a rational exchange between a peeved senior and the president of the activities committee, and no one was blaming DC. I was more annoyed with the defensive fangirl who couldn’t spell, TBH, because that’s a pretty poor representation of DC fans.

So, I haven’t commented on this whole issue yet, because I’ve been so thoroughly bummed about whatever it is that’s happened (trying not to speculate), that anything I posted would’ve just added to the angst and sadness. But it’s Monday now, and I’m feeling a lot more zen about it. Whatever’s going on, there’s nothing anyone can do right now, and I fully expect this radio silence from DC to continue through to Thursday, when he’ll hopefully be back on tour. And I also agree with folks that aren’t expecting to hear more about this from DC, even after he returns, and for that, I’m kind of glad. He deserves any privacy he’s asked for, and I’m glad he’s getting this much needed time with family.

I’m going to stop stressing for news on this front, and channel my energy towards looking forward to DC’s performance on Wednesday (no way they’ll reschedule that), the new CBTM video, and chartwatching for CBTM! Yay for fun DC distractions!

  • BootStar

Really, the post was more about slamming the student group that books the acts, rather than a slam on David.

In fact, at one point he says he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t blame David for canceling the gig for a family matter.

    He doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care for Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music? Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just a matter of opinion, and not a big deal imo.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with this senior stating his opinions about David or his music (or being pissed with the group that books on-campus acts), but it’s the kind of thing that some lazy celebrity/entertainment blogger could pick up on and then “conveniently” connect the dots to David appearing on Idol this week.

Of course, we all know the performances was prerecorded a couple of weeks ago, but I think the average viewer is easily fooled by the lame-ass editing they do to make it look like the performance just took place. They went through a lot of machinations last week to make it look like Ruben was there.

Hopefully, they’ll make it clear this week that David was recorded earlier. They could easily do that much for him, but I wouldn’t bank on it.

  • gingerly

IMO, BootStar, the average viewer doesn’t run around the internet reading blogs. I’d guess 95% of the people who watch Idol do only that. They just aren’t as invested as some of us. I have heard absolutely nothing about David cancelling his shows other than that one blog where somebody was personally affected (I can’t figure that one out because on the one hand he was saying he didn’t like David and then he was saying he was pissed it was cancelled….haven’t quite wrapped my head around that). David’s cancelling two shows truly isn’t news as far as I can tell.

  • SashaB

I guess I wasn’t clear. I was referring to bloggers like Perez Hilton, not the student/senior blog, in general.

As for announcing the pre-taped segment. Not sure that’s necessary. David said he was going to be away or off 4 days. Depends on when you count the days. So it could fit. I don’t think people are going to nitpick on it and literally count the days. But then again, who knows? *Shrugs*

  • Jolene

They won’t say anything about CBTM being pre-taped on AI, nor should they say anything about it. As gingerly said, the number of people aware of the cancelled shows is very very small compared to the Idol viewership, and out of that small percentage, most of them are fans who already know the Idol performance was pre-recorded. Who else has reason to follow the Cook tour closely?
So long as the tour goes on as planned the following day (fingers crossed) there’s absolutely no reason to make a special case out of this. The last thing I’d want is for Idol to make it clear DC’s performance was pre-recorded because it would break the flow of the show and raise questions as to why. Almost all performances are pre-recorded, but it would look bizarre to say that’s the case this one time when they don’t do it any other time.

  • I want pizza

Woa I read that college guy’s blog. Crazy fans like that Mandy are making poor Cook look bad outside of the AI fans bubble :/

  • oceana

Well I’m sure looking forward to seeing him sing CBTM on Idol, and the video glimpse. But whatever is appropriate I’ll go with. I hope it’s nothing too serious … though it must be pretty serious to cancel shows, which he wouldn’t do lightly. Sigh. It’s just kind of sad and I’m glad he’s with his family, whatever it is.

  • sunchick

I also actually enjoyed reading that college blog, especially the comments section. The guy went from “I’m so pissed about the whole deal, exclamation point” to “Okay, I understand the family matters could be serious, but my beef is with the Student Activities Association getting Cook in the first place” to “I am sure David Cook is a great artist, blah blah blah, I just wish they would have polled the students first” to “Okay, I understand you had a very limited window of opportunity to put in a bid to get Cook and had to act on it quickly. But, still, I’m vaguely annoyed.” Ah, student bloggers. I remember being college age and fired up about the menu in the HUB, and the campus cops cracking down on tailgating, and the ice on the sidewalks, and the change in the pool hours at the Nat and the price of beer… Then real life hits. (She says, at the ripe old age of 30.)

  • dcisluv

Oh please no. I hope… everything is okay. David and his family will be in my thoughts.

  • SashaB

Okay, I just read the student blogger that y’all are mentioning.

“Since I was planning on not attending the show in the first place, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m more disappointed in the student group that got him to come here in the first place- CAB.”

Seems like a fine or legitimate PoV or gripe. But again, the blogger should consider signing up for the CAB to have more of a voice on the acts they book. Hm, it is what it is. Wonder if they take a poll for all student activities? Probably not. Aw, to be young and idealistic. If it were only that simple. So easy to gripe yet not get involved. Heh.

  • BootStar

Tulsa World just picked up the story. They mention that David’s appearance on Wednesday was taped earlier (although I think they got the week of the taping wrong):

David Cook canceled concerts on the East coast Monday and Tuesday to deal with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“personal family matters.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

In a posting on DavidCookOfficial.com, representatives asked fans to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“please respect his privacy at this time,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and said they are working with officials at Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire and Connecticut University to reschedule the canceled shows.

    His appearance on Wednesdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ results show wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be affected à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ his performance of the new single à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Come Back to Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was taped after one of last weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shows.

Fans tuning into Wednesdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s results show, 7 p.m. on Fox channel 23 (cable channel 5) will also get a sneak peek at the video for Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new single.

Tulsa World: David Cook cancels shows

  • gingerly

Well, there you go, BootStar. They respected what he’s going through. I honestly can’t see that somebody wouldn’t look like the biggest douchebag ever to not respect that shit happens. I’m actually sorta hoping that Perez Hilton doesn’t respect what David’s going through, because I actually sorta think Perez is indeed the biggest douchebag ever.

  • oceana

Excellent article in the Tulsa paper. Good that they mentioned it was pre-taped. So there will be clarity.

  • sunchick

They respected what heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going through. I honestly canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see that somebody wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t look like the biggest douchebag ever to not respect that shit happens.

So true. Doubly so if you’re picking on a nice devoted family guy like Cook. And yes, Perez is King Douche.

  • ShariG

One of the posters on David’s myspace blog mentioned that she is a friend of Kendra’s and that Adam had taken a turn for the worse. This was just after the request to stalkers to stop stalking, so it has been about a week. I don’t know this person or how accurate the post was, but now with the cancellations it sure seems to point to things not going well for Adam. I sincerely hope that is not the case. I would like to add my thoughts and prayers to everyone else’s on this blog and hope that what ever is happening is resolved in a positive way.

  • AnoopFan

Wonder if they take a poll for all student activities? Probably not.

Nope…. at least not when I was there.

Did I care for some of the acts that they brought to campus? Nope. But did I take to my blog and gripe about CAB and their booking of said act? Of course not. If I didn’t like the act/show/what-have-you, I just didn’t go.

And I say this… obviously enough of the college community thought that DC was a good act to bring to campus…. after all, tickets DID sell out. If the college community didn’t want him, they wouldn’t have bought tickets to the show in the first place.

Ah well, ya can’t please ‘em all.

  • kimberann

Does anyone have the link for the student blog?

  • sunchick

The link is in Boot Star’s original post on the topic. Click on the purple words….those are always links.

  • SaraBaby828

Wow, I hope it isn’t true that his brother took a turn for the worse :(

I’ll be at his show this Friday in MD and have been really looking forward to it, but this kind of puts a damper on things
